6. Effects of an Online Rational Emotive Curriculum on Primary School Students' Tendencies for Online and Real-World Aggression

- Abstract
This study investigated the relationship between online and real-world aggressive behavior among primary school students as well as the effects of an online rational emotive curriculum on reducing the tendency of students to display aggression online and in the real-world. We developed an online information literacy course integrated with rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) to reduce aggressive behavior, using online incidents of hostility as instructional material. An experiment was conducted on four intact Grade 5 classes comprising 67 students using rational emotive curriculum. Control groups comprising 63 students took the same course without the rational emotive curriculum. All of the students participated in one class per week for six weeks consecutively. Our results indicated: (a) a moderate correlation between online and real-world aggressive behavior among primary school students; and (b) the online rational emotive curriculum had a significant effect alleviating aggressive behavior among students with strong hostile tendencies. A quantum statistical theory is developed for a fractional quantum Hall effects in terms of composite bosons (fermions) each of which contains a conduction electron and an odd (even) number of fluxons. The cause of the QHE is by assumption the phonon exchange attraction between the conduction electron ("electron", "hole") and fluxons (quanta of magnetic fluxes). We postulate that c-fermions with \emph{any} even number of fluxons have an effective charge (magnitude) equal to the electron charge $e$. The density of c-fermions with $m$ fluxons, $n_\phi^{(m)}$, is connected with the electron density $n_{\mathrm e}$ by $n_\phi^{(m)}=n_{\mathrm e}/m$, which implies a more difficult formation for higher $m$, generating correct values $me^2/h$ for the Hall conductivity $\sigma_{\mathrm H}\equiv j/E_{\mathrm H}$. For condensed c-bosons the density of c-bosons-with-$m$ fluxons, $n_\phi^{(m)}$, is connected with the boson density $n_0$ by $n_\phi^{(m)}=n_0/m$. This yields $\sigma_{\mathrm H}=m\,e^2/h$ for the magnetoconductivity, the value observed of the QHE at filling factor $\nu=1/m$ ($m=$odd numbers). 8. Theory of High-Field Transports in Metallic Single-Wall Nanotubes

Individual metallic single-wall carbon nanotubes show unsual non-Ohmic transport behaviors at high bias fields. For low resistance contact samples, the differential conductance dI/dV increases with increasing bias, reaching a maximum at $\sim$ 100mV. As the bias increases further, dI/dV drops dramatically [Yao et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2941 (2000)]. The higher the bias, the system behaves in a more normal (Ohmic) manner. This so-called zero-bias anomaly is temperature-dependent (50--150K). We propose a new interpretation. Supercurrent runs in the graphene wall below $\sim$ 150K. The normal conduction-electron currents run outside the wall, which are subject to the scattering by phonons and impurities. The currents along the tube induce circulating magnetic fields and eventually destroy the supercurrent in the wall at high enough bias, and restore the Ohmic behavior. If the prevalent ballistic electron model is adopted, then the scattering effects cannot be discussed., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

In the quantum Hall effect (QHE) the differential resistivity $r_{xx} \equiv r$ vanishes within a range where the Hall resistivity forms a plateau. A microscopic theory is developed, starting with a crystal lattice, setting up a BCS-like Hamiltonian in terms of composite bosons, and using statistical mechanical method. The main advantage of our bosonic theory is its capability of explaning the plateau formation in the Hall resistivity, which is assumed in the composite fermion theories. In the QHE under radiation, the resistivity vanishes within a range with no plateau formation. This is shown in terms of two-channels model, one channel excited by radiation where the supercurrents run and the other (base) channel in which the normal currents run. The transport diamonds (TD) and the zero direct current anomaly (ZCA) occur when the resistivity $r$ is measured as a function of magnetic field and direct current (DC). The spiral motion of an electron under a magnetic field can be decomposed into two, the cyclotron motion with the cyclotron mass $m^*$ and the guiding center motion with the magnetotransport $M^*$. The quantization of the motion generates magnetic oscillations in the density of states. The magnetoconductivity is calculated, using kinetic theory and quantum statistical mechanics. The TR and ZCA are shown to be a breakdown of QHE. The integer QHE minima are shown to become the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) maxima progressively as the DC increases. The ZCA at low temperatures ($T=0.253$--1.2\,K) is temperature-dependent, which is caused by the electron-optical-phonon scattering., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

A quantum statistical theory is developed for the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation in the magnetization for a 2D system of quasifree electrons. The oscillatory density of states associated with the Landau levels gives rise to the dHvA oscillation. Significantly, there is no Landau's diamagnetic term proportional to B2. This leads to the conclusion that the 2D electron system is always paramagnetic, but shows a magnetic oscillation. 14. Third-order many-body perturbation theory calculations for the beryllium and magnesium isoelectronic sequences

Relativistic third-order MBPT is applied to obtain energies of ions with two valence electrons in the no virtual-pair approximation (NVPA). A total of 302 third-order Goldstone diagrams are organized into 12 one-body and 23 two-body terms. Only third-order two-body terms and diagrams are presented here, owing to the fact that the one-body terms are identical to the previously studied third-order terms in monovalent ions. Dominant classes of diagrams are identified. The model potential is a Dirac-Hartree-Fock $V^{N-2}$ potential, and B-spline basis functions in a cavity of finite radius are employed in the numerical calculations. The Breit interaction is taken into account through second order of perturbation theory and the lowest-order Lamb shift is also evaluated. Sample calculations are performed for berylliumlike ions with Z = 4--7, and for the magnesiumlike ion P IV. The third-order energies are in excellent agreement with measurement with an accuracy at 0.2% level for the cases considered. Comparisons are made with previous second-order MBPT results and with other calculations. The third-order energy correction is shown to be significant, improving second-order correlation energies by an order of magnitude.

The off-diagonal hyperfine interaction between the 6p1/2 and 6p3/2 states in 133Cs is evaluated in third-order MBPT giving 37.3 Hz and 48.3 Hz, respectively, for second-order energies of the 6p3/2 F=3 and F=4 levels. This result is a factor of 10 smaller than one obtained from an uncorrelated first-order Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculation and used in the analysis of a recent high-precision (< 2 kHz) measurement of the 6p3/2 hyperfine structure [Gerginov et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 72301 (2003)]. The factor of 10 difference has negligible effect on the conclusions of the recent experiment but will become important for experiments carried out at a precision of better than 1 kHz.

Background: Many causes of vision impairment can be prevented or treated. With an ageing global population, the demands for eye health services are increasing. We estimated the prevalence and relative contribution of avoidable causes of blindness and vision impairment globally from 1990 to 2020. We aimed to compare the results with the World Health Assembly Global Action Plan (WHA GAP) target of a 25% global reduction from 2010 to 2019 in avoidable vision impairment, defined as cataract and undercorrected refractive error. - Abstract
Objectives To use data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 (GBD 2019) to estimate mortality and disability trends for the population aged ≥70 and evaluate patterns in causes of death, disability, and risk factors. Design Systematic analysis. Setting Participants were aged ≥70 from 204 countries and territories, 1990-2019. Main outcomes measures Years of life lost, years lived with disability, disability adjusted life years, life expectancy at age 70 (LE-70), healthy life expectancy at age 70 (HALE-70), proportion of years in ill health at age 70 (PYIH-70), risk factors, and data coverage index were estimated based on standardised GBD methods. Results Globally the population of older adults has increased since 1990 and all cause death rates have decreased for men and women. However, mortality rates due to falls increased between 1990 and 2019. The probability of death among people aged 70-90 decreased, mainly because of reductions in non-communicable diseases. Globally disability burden was largely driven by functional decline, vision and hearing loss, and symptoms of pain. LE-70 and HALE-70 showed continuous increases since 1990 globally, with certain regional disparities. Globally higher LE-70 resulted in higher HALE-70 and slightly increased PYIH-70. Sociodemographic and healthcare access and quality indices were positively correlated with HALE-70 and LE-70. For high exposure risk factors, data coverage was moderate, while limited data were available for various dietary, environmental or occupational, and metabolic risks. Conclusions Life expectancy at age 70 has continued to rise globally, mostly because of decreases in chronic diseases. Adults aged ≥70 living in high income countries and regions with better healthcare access and quality were found to experience the highest life expectancy and healthy life expectancy. Disability burden, however, remained constant, suggesting the need to enhance public health and intervention

- Abstract
Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival.

Culvert design must account for a large range of flow rates but most of the time culverts convey flows that are smaller than the design flow. Repeated high flows passing through the culverts lead to a gradual increase of the sediment deposits in the culvert vicinity, eventually resulting in reduced flow and sediment capacity. Sedimentation at culverts is quite an involved process due to the combined effect of flow non-uniformity and unsteadiness, as well as of the flow-sediment interaction. This paper reports results from a series of laboratory experiments aimed at understanding the hydro and morpho-dynamic changes occurring in the vicinity of a three-box culvert. For this purpose, velocity and turbulence characteristics upstream of the culvert were mapped globally and locally during the transition from an original flatbed to equilibrium sediment transport condition using contemporary acoustics, light detection and ranging, and image-based technologies. The experimental results reveal flow complexities not currently accounted for in the design of the multi-barrel culverts, but which can be detrimental for their long-term operation. Considerations on practical approaches to efficiently model the complexities were formulated. Key words: culvert, non-uniform flow, LSPIV, LiDAR, acoustic instrument. La conception des ponceaux doit tenir compte d'une grande plage de debits mais, la plupart du temps, les ponceaux font passer des debits qui sont inferieurs au debit prevu. Les debits eleves passant a repetition dans les ponceaux engendrent une augmentation graduelle du depot de sediments aux environs du ponceau, ce qui conduit eventuellement une capacite reduite de debit et de transport solide. La sedimentation aux ponceaux est un processus complexe en raison de l'effet combine de la non-uniformite et de l'instabilite du debit ainsi que de l'interaction debit-sediments. Le present article presente les resultats d'une serie d'experiences en laboratoire visant a comprendre les changements hydrodynamiques et morpho-dynamiques survenant aux environs d'un ponceau tricorps. A cette fin, les caracteristiques de vitesse et de turbulence a l'amont du ponceau ont ete cartographiees globalement et localement durant la transition d'un lit plat initial a une condition de transport a l'equilibre de sediments en utilisant l'acoustique contemporain, le LiDAR et les technologies basees sur les images. Les resultats experimentaux revelent des complexites de debits dont on ne tient pas presentement compte dans la conception de ponceaux multitubes, mais qui pourraient nuire a leur fonctionnement a long terme. - Abstract
Background: Documentation of patterns and long-term trends in mortality in young people, which reflect huge changes in demographic and social determinants of adolescent health, enables identification of global investment priorities for this age group. We aimed to analyse data on the number of deaths, years of life lost, and mortality rates by sex and age group in people aged 10–24 years in 204 countries and territories from 1950 to 2019 by use of estimates from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. Methods: We report trends in estimated total numbers of deaths and mortality rate per 100 000 population in young people aged 10–24 years by age group (10–14 years, 15–19 years, and 20–24 years) and sex in 204 countries and territories between 1950 and 2019 for all causes, and between 1980 and 2019 by cause of death. We analyse variation in outcomes by region, age group, and sex, and compare annual rate of change in mortality in young people aged 10–24 years with that in children aged 0–9 years from 1990 to 2019. We then analyse the association between mortality in people aged 10–24 years and socioeconomic development using the GBD Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite measure based on average national educational attainment in people older than 15 years, total fertility rate in people younger than 25 years, and income per capita. We assess the association between SDI and all-cause mortality in 2019, and analyse the ratio of observed to expected mortality by SDI using the most recent available data release (2017). Findings: In 2019 there were 1·49 million deaths (95% uncertainty interval 1·39–1·59) worldwide in people aged 10–24 years, of which 61% occurred in males. 32·7% of all adolescent deaths were due to transport injuries, unintentional injuries, or interpersonal violence and conflict; 32·1% were due to communicable, nutritional, or maternal causes; 27·0% were due to non-communicable diseases; and 8·2% were due to self-harm

- Abstract
Background: Data sparsity is a major limitation to estimating national and global dementia burden. Surveys with full diagnostic evaluations of dementia prevalence are prohibitively resource-intensive in many settings. However, validation samples from nationally representative surveys allow for the development of algorithms for the prediction of dementia prevalence nationally. Methods: Using cognitive testing data and data on functional limitations from Wave A (2001–2003) of the ADAMS study (n = 744) and the 2000 wave of the HRS study (n = 6358) we estimated a two-dimensional item response theory model to calculate cognition and function scores for all individuals over 70. Based on diagnostic information from the formal clinical adjudication in ADAMS, we fit a logistic regression model for the classification of dementia status using cognition and function scores and applied this algorithm to the full HRS sample to calculate dementia prevalence by age and sex. Results: Our algorithm had a cross-validated predictive accuracy of 88% (86–90), and an area under the curve of 0.97 (0.97–0.98) in ADAMS. Prevalence was higher in females than males and increased over age, with a prevalence of 4% (3–4) in individuals 70–79, 11% (9–12) in individuals 80–89 years old, and 28% (22–35) in those 90 and older. Conclusions: Our model had similar or better accuracy as compared to previously reviewed algorithms for the prediction of dementia prevalence in HRS, while utilizing more flexible methods. These methods could be more easily generalized and utilized to estimate dementia prevalence in other national surveys.
