Diego de Torres Villarroel fue uno de los grandes referentes intelectuales del siglo XVIII. No obstante, su carrera académica, la calidad de sus escritos y el gran número de textos publicados fueron en numerosas ocasiones empañados por las polémicas mantenidas con sus contemporáneos. En todo caso si bien fueron incontables los temas que trató, sobre toda su obra se aprecia un interés manifiesto por la locura y que plasmó en obras como los Sueños Morales. En estos volúmenes Torres presentó a varios enfermos de locura en sus momentos finales, desahuciados en el hospital. A lo largo de este ensayo estudio a uno de ellos: el frenético y el modo en que el autor salmantino comprendió y representó la locura. El curso de la enfermedad, la diversidad de tratamientos empleados sobre él o el trasfondo social de la insania son algunos de los puntos fundamentales.

Introduction. One of the congenital anomalies that pediatric surgeons constantly face is esophageal atresia. The results of its treatment in the 21st century, which is even carried out through minimally invasive surgery, have nothing to do with the anguish experienced after its recognition as a disease in 1670 by Durston. Methods. A historical review and analysis of the information available in the databases was performed to establish the evolution of the surgical correction of esophageal atresia over time to the present. Results. Since the end of the 19th century, when the era of surgery began, surgeons faced the uncertainties of a disease that was yet to be understood, making multiple unsuccesful efforts, with high mortality in each procedure proposed for its resolution. After five decades of failed attempts, the resilience of the surgeons of the time, together with progress in anesthetic resources, pediatric and nursing care, instruments and infection control, finally allowed the goal of achieving survival after such a complex procedure was possible. Conclusions. This article aims to recognize the milestones that marked advances in surgery for the correction of esophageal atresia at the global, Latin American and national levels. Se revela que los dos únicos libros médicos novohispanos consagrados al mercurio y sus cualidades están relacionados a través de la disputa. Esta tiene lugar en el Tratado de la qualidad manifiesta, que el Mercurio tiene (1648), del cirujano latinista, Juan de Correa, y en el Tratado de la qualidad manifiesta, y virtud del azogue (1649), del cirujano romancista, Hernando Bezerra. Los tres grandes argumentos que se combaten en este duelo intelectual, académico y erudito están sustentados por varios rasgos en común, textuales y paratextuales. Se concluye que el juicio y la acción de estos cirujanos no solo se conforma a través de la auctoritas –que guía– y la experiencia –que sustenta–, sino, también, a través de las distintas narrativas que eran de su conocimiento y que provenían de la hagiografía, de la metalogénesis y de las descripciones de la otredad. Es decir, en la configuración de una disputa sobre los grados y propiedades curativas del mercurio participaron realidades que solo existían en el texto y en la tradición de una narrativa que le creía capaz de sanar males, como el morbo gálico.

Adolfo Rey Seijo (1942-2016) was a Galician surgeon and Medical Brigadier General who enjoyed great recognition within our country, reaching the position of Full Academician on Military Medicine of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Galicia (RAMYCGA) and that of Health Director of the Air Force. During the almost 40 years that his professional career lasted, he knew how to combine the military sphere with the medical one, without neglecting his interest in scientific research in which he specialized: General Surgery and Digestive System; as a good pupil of the prolific chair of Surgery of Professor Puente Domínguez at the University of Santiago de Compostela. We have tried to value his figure and analyze his scientific and professional career, placing ourselves in his historical context and using contemporary bibliographic references. In this way we try to recognize the importance of his contribution to Spanish Military Medicine, being another example of the prolific relationship between both fields, along with other figures also galicians as the drs. Gómez Ulla, Gómez Durán, Cesáreo Fernández de Losada, Vidal Ríos, Estrada Catoyra, Sierra Forniés or Sal Lence. Apart from being elected Full Member of the RAMYCGA, he was awarded the Grand Cross of Aeronautical Merit and the Grand Cross of San Hermenegildo, among others, for his services in the Armed Forces. Mentoring in medical education has been fundamental since ancient times. It facilitates the transmission of scientific and technical knowledge and the development of competencies like empathy and leadership. In contemporary medicine, signaled by technological advances and specialization, mentors are crucial to maintaining the integrity and humanization of medical practice, positively influencing professionals' ethical and clinical conduct. This article explores the history and evolution of mentoring, including its current challenges, like time limitations, lack of resources, and pressure for performance that may affect effective relationships. We reinforce the need to implement structured programs and adequate training for mentors to overcome the identified challenges to ensure effective mentoring, thus preparing future professionals in technical, ethical, and humanistic abilities. Fundamento: las historias de vida de personalidades destacadas, como los profesionales de la salud, constituyen hoy una necesidad imperiosa en pos de enriquecer la historia de la salud pública en la cual el Dr. José Alberto Borges López desempeña un papel determinante, como médico legista. Objetivo: Mostrar la profesionalidad médica del Dr. José Alberto Borges López y su firme vínculo con la medicina legal cubana. Métodos: se realizó una investigación documental en el Hospital Universitario "Arnaldo Milián Castro" de Villa Clara en 2023, en la que se utilizaron métodos teóricos: analítico-sintético, inductivo-deductivo e histórico-lógico; y empírico: análisis documental a través de la revisión de materiales históricos, entre ellos: expedientes laboral y docente del doctor, su autobiografía, títulos académicos y científicos, diplomas y reconocimientos, artículos publicados, entrevistas a su persona y otras figuras relevantes de la medicina villaclareña contemporánea; todos considerados fuentes fidedignas de información. Resultados: se destacan los elementos fundamentales de la trayectoria del mencionado doctor como docente, su actividad asistencial y científica, como colaborador internacional y directivo; y sus valores y principios como ser humano, lo cual demuestra que es un referente indiscutible en la formación de los profesionales de la salud. Conclusiones: el médico legista acumula un vasto caudal de conocimientos. Su vida y obra siempre han estado al servicio de la Revolución y su legado trasciende hasta convertirlo en un modelo de la medicina en Cuba.

A la luz de las últimas investigaciones en el campo de la historia de la medicina, resulta incontestable que las mujeres han desempeñado un papel esencial en la experimentación, aplicación y transmisión de los saberes médicos tradicionales. Se ha constatado que durante el Renacimiento han emergido evidencias de su desempeño, no solo como meras personas encargadas de los cuidados y de las curas, sino que eran transmisoras de todas las propiedades médicas de las hierbas y de remedios que han elaborado en el espacio privado de su hogar. Esta difusión privada en red se fomenta en el Renacimiento tanto con el auge de la imprenta, así como con la difusión de los postulados de la Querella de las mujeres. Prueba de ello será la publicación en 1600 del tratado Il merito delle donne, en el que Moderata Fonte no solo muestra todo ese conocimiento médico popular, sino que lanza un llamamiento a todas las mujeres para fomentar una medicina que centrada en ellas mismas.

La acalasia es uno de los trastornos más frecuentes de la motilidad esofágica y su tratamiento demuestra que viejos conceptos descritos hace 110 años aún se aplican 1. Por su parte, la miotomía de Heller laparoscópica (MHL) continúa siendo el procedimiento de elección para el tratamiento de algunos tipos de acalasia, superando procedimientos quirúrgicos por vía abierta, endoscópicos o robóticos, en diferentes aspectos como seguridad, efectividad, durabilidad, factibilidad, costo-efectividad, prevención y manejo de las complicaciones que puedan presentarse, entre ellas la enfermedad por reflujo gastroesofágico (ERGE).

Clinical judgement has become a central topic in both medicine and the philosophy since the 1960s. With the development of evidence-based medicine in the 1990s, clinical judgment is expected to be more sensitive to the needs and preferences of patients in the face of threats from positivist approaches that are considered to neglect individuality. This paper addresses this problem in the light of a philosophy of medicine that is more sensitive to the historical components of epistemology, ontology, and ethics. The analysis is directed to the 19th century in order to elucidate the tensions about the place of medical knowledge and the commitment, for the sake of professional improvement, to provide clinical judgment with new methods. This trip to the past is useful to understand the current transformations in the field of medicine, especially the way in which they help constitute new types of patients, new types of professional ethos, and new forms of relationship between these actors. Introduction: Gastroenterology was not officially considered an independent specialty until after World War II. The creation, in 1932, of the Gastroenterology and Proctology section of the American Medical Association laid the foundations in this direction. The first Cuban Society of Gastroenterology dates back to 1922. Evidence of its practice is collected in the Central Region of Cuba around 1948. Objective: to specify the origin and development of Gastroenterology in the Central Region of Cuba. Methods: in this research, the historical method was followed, supported by the documentary review technique and interviews with key informants. Different documents were analyzed and methodological triangulation was carried out to arrive at integrative considerations. Development: a review is made of the main events related to the origin and consolidation of Gastroenterology in the Central Region of Cuba. Conclusions: Gastroenterology as a medical specialty has had an important development in the City of Santa Clara and has its main protagonist in the figure of Professor Oswaldo Carbó Bobia. By reviewing the scientific literature specialized in sleep disorders (TS) carried out in Mexico, especially at the TS Clinic (Faculty of Medicine-UNAM) at the General Hospital of Mexico (CTS-HGM) from 1948 to 2020, it was possible to document the history of ST research in Mexico and the role played by the CTS-HGM. Sleep Medicine (MS) is one of the newest specialties in Mexico and case research in this field began around 1948, while formal research in 1974. The founding of CTSHGM in 1997 led to significant development in TS research in Mexico. In addition, the CTS-HGM became a center of care for patients with these problems, as well as an important research center, since its publications cover all the diagnostic categories of the CITS. Miguel de Asúa, Doctor en Medicina y en Historia, fue convocado por diversas sociedades e instituciones médicas para enriquecer sus congresos, seminarios y publicaciones. De allí surgieron los trabajos que componen De Hipócrates a Clío donde enfoca rigurosamente temas como la relación entre filosofía y medicina, la consecuencia de las epidemias o la muerte en la infancia.

Introducción. Una de las anomalías congénitas a las que permanentemente se enfrenta el cirujano pediatra es la atresia de esófago. Los resultados de su tratamiento en el siglo XXI, el cual incluso se realiza a través de cirugía mínimamente invasiva, nada tienen que ver con las angustias vividas a partir de su reconocimiento como enfermedad en 1670 por Durston. Métodos. Se realizó una revisión histórica y el análisis de la información disponible en las bases de datos, con el fin de establecer la evolución de la corrección quirúrgica de la atresia esofágica a través del tiempo hasta la actualidad. Resultados. Desde finales del siglo XIX, cuando empezó la era de la cirugía, los cirujanos se enfrentaron a las incertidumbres de una enfermedad que estaba por comprenderse, realizando múltiples esfuerzos infructuosos, con alta mortalidad en cada procedimiento que se proponía para su resolución. Luego de cinco décadas de intentos fallidos, la resiliencia de los cirujanos de la época, junto con el progreso en cuanto a recursos anestésicos, cuidados pediátricos y de enfermería, instrumental y control de las infecciones, permitió que por fin el objetivo de alcanzar la supervivencia después de un procedimiento tan complejo fuera posible. Conclusiones. Este artículo pretende reconocer los hitos que marcaron los avances en la cirugía para la corrección de la atresia de esófago en el ámbito mundial, latinoamericano y nacional.

Este trabajo examina el significativo aporte de los doctores Valentín Grandis y Virgilio Ducceschi a la fundación y desarrollo de la fisiología experimental en la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas de la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (UNC), Argentina. A pesar de que la contribución más notable en el campo de la fisiología experimental en Argentina se atribuye a Bernardo Alberto Houssay, este estudio destaca la importancia de los esfuerzos previos y fundamentales de Grandis y Ducceschi, dos profesores italianos cuyo trabajo en Buenos Aires y Córdoba sentó las bases para la investigación y la enseñanza de esta disciplina. El trabajo detalla cómo, en 1904, la llegada de Valentín Grandis a la UNC marcó el inicio formal de la enseñanza y práctica de la fisiología experimental en la institución, seguida por la incorporación de Virgilio Ducceschi, quien continuó y expandió el legado de Grandis. La labor de estos dos maestros italianos no solo involucró la instalación de un laboratorio de vanguardia sino también el establecimiento de una sólida base académica y científica que influiría en generaciones futuras de médicos e investigadores argentinos. A través de un análisis detallado de sus biografías, contribuciones científicas, y el impacto de su trabajo, este documento ilustra cómo Grandis y Ducceschi fueron figuras clave en el desarrollo de la ciencia médica en Argentina, particularmente en el ámbito de la fisiología experimental. Además, el estudio resalta la importancia de su enfoque educativo y su capacidad para formar discípulos que continuarían sus investigaciones, asegurando así la permanencia de su legado en la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba y en la ciencia argentina en general. En conclusión, el presente trabajo reivindica y celebra las contribuciones de Valentín Grandis y Virgilio Ducceschi al inicio de la investigación y experimentación en fisiología y química biológica en la UNC, subrayando su importancia en el avance de la medicina y la ciencia en Argentina.

El proceso de dominio y cristianización de las comunidades indígenas desarrollado por las monarquías europeas tuvo en la Compañía de Jesús un importante aliado. En este sentido, la cura de las almas estuvo estrechamente relacionada con la atención médica prestada a las comunidades locales. El Florilegio de Juan de Esteyneffer bebe de esta tradición al presentarse como un complejo catálogo médico de las enfermedades más comunes en el pensamiento neogalenista de los siglos XVII y XVIII, como fue la melancolía, pero ofreciendo soluciones del ámbito novohispano.

La Clínica Estomatológica Provincial Docente de Santiago de Cuba está enclavada en el terreno donde anteriormente estuvo la finca Espanta Sueño, y luego, también allí se fundó el antiguo Hospital Militar Joaquín Castillo Duany. Sus antecedentes y trayectoria son mencionados en varios textos desde el siglo XIX, mas se desconoce su surgimiento desde su asentamiento. Se utilizaron como fuentes primarias de investigación textos históricos, consultados en orden cronológico del Archivo Histórico Provincial de Santiago de Cuba, del Departamento de Fondos Raros y Valiosos de la biblioteca provincial Elvira Cape luego de una revisión exhaustiva de documentos y periódicos de la época. Se realizó el presente artículo con el objetivo de describir el desarrollo de este centro y los contextos históricos fundamentales; su surgimiento y desarrollo fue descrito en dos etapas, de 1841 a 1936 y de 1937 a 1944.

El presente artículo tiene como objeto ofrecer un análisis de las principales líneas de investigación que, en España, se han ocupado de la salud y la enfermedad en el siglo XVIII. El conocimiento sobre los aspectos relacionados con la salud y la enfermedad constituye una pieza clave para interpretar las sociedades del pasado, contribuyendo a profundizar en la comprensión de esta centuria desde una perspectiva social, política e ideológica. A pesar de la pujanza de este tipo de estudios en décadas pasadas, en el momento actual el Setecientos no recibe excesiva atención por parte de la historiografía. Sin embargo, lejos de resultar un periodo agotado, aún persisten considerables vacíos que podrían mitigarse con el aprovechamiento de fuentes poco empleadas hasta la fecha y a partir de nuevas preguntas y formas de escrutar el pasado.

La profesión médica siempre ha estado dispuesta al servicio del hombre, lo cual ha exigido, históricamente, que se establecieran y desarrollaran diferentes juramentos, códigos y leyes sobre el actuar del médico, así como la aplicación de responsabilidades y gratificaciones o castigos derivados de sus actos. Este trabajo pretende definir y analizar la presencia de los principios rectores de la bioética en el juramento hipocrático, la declaración de Ginebra y en la fórmula para hoy del Juramento de Hipócrates del doctor Herranz, así como busca demostrar la importancia de su cumplimiento en la práctica médica contemporánea. Para finalizar se presenta, la que se considera la mejor propuesta de juramento de acuerdo con los principios rectores de la bioética personalista con fundamentación ontológica.

Introducción: La pediatría es una de las especialidades básicas en la atención primaria de salud encargada de la promoción, prevención, curación y rehabilitación en la población infantil, pero su evolución histórica en este nivel de atención ha sido poco estudiada. Objetivo: Sistematizar el desarrollo histórico de la especialidad de Pediatría en la atención primaria de salud durante el periodo revolucionario en Cuba. Material y Métodos: Se realizó una investigación cualitativa de revisión documental de alcance exploratorio. Para identificar los documentos que se revisarían fue consultada la base bibliográfica Scielo, PubMed/Medline y en el motor de búsqueda Google Académico sin límite de años. Se utilizó el método histórico-lógico, el análisis documental y la sistematización. Se estudiaron 85 artículos, de los cuales 30 fueron referenciados. Desarrollo: Se periodiza el desarrollo de la pediatría en la atención primaria de salud durante el periodo revolucionario en seis decenios. A partir del análisis de cada decenio, se identifican las principales acciones desplegadas por el sistema nacional de salud basado en el enfoque de la atención primaria de salud. Conclusiones: El desarrollo histórico de la pediatría en la atención primaria de salud estuvo relacionado con la revolución social y voluntad política del Estado y con el proceso de perfeccionamiento constante de los modelos de atención médica del período revolucionario en Cuba, como parte de la aplicación de la estrategia de la atención primaria de salud. La presencia del especialista de pediatría en este nivel de atención contribuyó a perfeccionar y enriquecer la práctica médica.

Introduction: Cardiac traumatic injuries are serious injuries with a high lethality rate, an aspect that influences the interest shown by readers each time they appear reported in scientific publications. Sometimes there is a certain degree of inconsistency when it comes to establishing the historical origin of occurrences or events related to the history of medicine. In the case of penetrating cardiac trauma, different origins have been described in some of the published scientific articles, which may generate a degree of doubt in the readers. Methods: A review of the medical and non-medical literature was carried out to seek information that would help to clarify the true historical origin of this entity. Results: Penetrating cardiac trauma was first described in a Greek work entitled The Iliad, written by Homer in the 8th century B.C., and not in The Surgical Papyrus of Edwin Smith as several authors mention. Conclusions. Of all the events of penetrating cardiac trauma described, the most irrefutable is the one narrated in canto XIII, where it recounts the death of Alcathous product of a cardiac wound caused by a spear thrown by Idomeneo during a battle. Background: the so-called provinces of Las Villas and Havana treasure the first experiences on health psychology in Cuba; although this story has been insufficiently disseminated in the central region of the country. Objective: to identify distinctive aspects of health psychology from 1964 to 2023 in the former province of Las Villas, and later, in Villa Clara. Methods: a historical research was carried out at Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences, from January to March 2023. Theoretical methods were used: analysis-synthesis, induction-deduction, historical-logical and systemic; empirical: documentary research in historical sources of proven veracity, interviews with key informants and testimonies of the authors. Results: in the 1968-1969 academic year, Psychology was inserted into the programs of the Ministry of Public Health, in Havana and Las Villas. Since the founding of the National Society of Health Psychology and the Las Villas Branch in 1975, the specialty has been in progress: the graduation of several specialists, completion of four master's degrees and a line of doctoral research, several events with participation International exchange, scientific exchanges with other universities, and the accreditation of the specialty are some of the advances that distinguish it. Conclusions: health psychology in the central region of Cuba has been on the rise since its foundation. Its achievements in the scientific and academic scenarios have been strengthened under the direction of a group of founders who, with creativity and responsibility, have become promoters and actors of its successes.

Se describen aspectos importantes de la historia de vida del Dr. Idalberto Orges González, su vocación de médico humanista, ejemplo de ética y consagración al trabajo. El Dr. Orges, fue un ilustre y querido médico tunero, docente, investigador, especialista de segundo grado en Neumología, neumólogo provincial y subdirector general del Centro Provincial de Higiene, Epidemiología y Microbiología, vicedirector docente de la Dirección de Salud Provincial en Las Tunas, jefe del servicio de Neumología del Hospital General Docente “Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna”, decano de la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas Dr. Zoilo Enrique Marinello Vidaurreta, Las Tunas, jefe de la Primera Brigada Médica con la condición de Modelo, en Lubango, Huila, República Democrática Popular de Angola, vicedirector del Hospital Universitario Benéfico Jurídico de La Habana. Amante de la naturaleza, defensor de los valores familiares, médicos y patrióticos, excelente hijo, padre amado, amigo incondicional, un patriota honorable.

Leandro Fabián Figueroa González was born on January 20, 1953 in Caibarién, former province of Las Villas. He graduated as a General Practitioner in 1975 and achieved First Degree Specialist in Pediatrics in 1979. Also known as "the doctor of children", had an accident with a fracture and spinal cord damage that confined him to a wheelchair, but he remained working as a doctor and played an important role in teaching and research. For his outstanding work for years, he was awarded the distinction for the 170 Anniversary of the Caibarién Foundation by the Municipal Assembly and the medal for Medical Services. He carried out an arduous teaching and research work, as a tutor and advisor of several degree theses. For his work of several decades dedicated to teaching and research he was also recognized. He worked his last five years as a paediatrician and maintained an outstanding work in the training of interns and residents. He died on May 13, 2007, leaving an important legacy for the new generations of doctors and the memory of many mothers who would be grateful for having always saved their children. In his memory, the teaching polyclinic of Caibarién is named after him.

Introduction: knowledge of history is necessary to record the origin and development of the different specialties in Villa Clara. Objective: present a synthesis of historical elements about the specialty of Clinical Laboratory in Villa Clara, after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution and the evolution of said specialty. Methods: a bibliographic review was carried out with reflective critical analysis of the content of the bibliographies. The files of the specialty, books and materials related to the topic discussed were reviewed, interviews were conducted with clinical laboratory personnel to inquire about previous years and up to the present; Doctoral theses, master's degrees, original and review articles published from 2005 to 2019 in Spanish and English were included. The search was carried out in the SciELO and Google academic databases from January to March 2020. Development: the historical development of the specialty in Villa Clara and the professionals who participated were explained, aspects of the training of human resources, the evolution of the specialty and the new challenges were shown. Conclusions: some historical elementswere socialized about the specialty of Clinical Laboratory in Villa Clara, in the stage after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in recognition of all those who contributed to the beginning and development of said specialty that today meets the required quality standards.

Introducción: El cáncer representa un extraordinario problema para la Salud Pública mundial, suponiendo la primera causa de mortalidad global. El cáncer de pulmón es el más frecuente. El número de defunciones se ha ordenado de acuerdo a la Clasificación de Bertillon. El objetivo del estudio fue analizar las causas de mortalidad por cáncer; determinar que grupos de edad presentan más muertes y que estaciones; calcular las tasas de mortalidad. Materiales y métodos: mediante la lectura de los Libros de Defunción del Archivo Parroquial de la ciudad (APJC), se han obtenido 26.203 difuntos, 18.538 de los cuales tienen anotado el motivo de su muerte, los cuales son utilizados para su análisis posterior. Resultados: Se registraron 182 defunciones por cáncer (1 % del total), la gran mayoría adultos, 165 (90.7 %), siendo las mujeres casi el doble, 121 (66.5 %). La mayor mortalidad se da entre los 45 y los 74 años, 122 difuntos (67.0 %). El cáncer más frecuente es el del apartado de otros órganos, con 50 defunciones (40.6 %). El mes con más muertos es marzo. las papeletas de defunción solían presentar errores ortográficos o de transcripción. Estudios similares en otras poblaciones arrojan cifras dispares según el periodo analizado y la cifra de muertos. Existe una estrecha relación entre cáncer y edad. Conclusión: El cáncer de otros órganos es el más numeroso. La mortalidad difiere entre las distintas poblaciones comparadas. El número de difuntos es muy inferior al actual, debido a la falta de medios diagnósticos y conocimientos de la época y la posible existencia de un subregistro.

In 1960 it was transferred to the current head office and became fundamental column in the beginning of higher medical teaching for the whole east of Cuba. It is mentioned in several texts from the XIX century, but its creation and trajectory is not known. In that sense, after an exhaustive review of documents and newspapers of that time, the present work was carried out aimed at describing the evolution of this center and the fundamental historical contexts. The objective of this article is to vividly evoke the shared experiences with Professor and researcher Francisco Herrera-Rodríguez and to explicitly outline the most significant aspects of his contribution to the history of medicine and nursing, based on both historical research and narrative, highlighting his strong commitment and dedication to literary sources. The methodology employed has focused on autobiography, recalling shared moments in academic, artistic, literary, and leisure contexts; that is, the creation of autobiographical life stories focused on the times when various interactions occurred between Francisco Herrera-Rodríguez and the author. The results demonstrate the importance of Francisco Herrera-Rodríguez's contributions to the history of medicine and nursing. Likewise, the great humanistic quality of the mentioned researcher is evident. Conclusions: Francisco Herrera-Rodríguez, through the cultivation of his favorite passions--historical research, literature, drawing, painting, and art in general--emerged as a profound humanist who positively influenced the education of historians in the fields of medicine and nursing. Los símbolos constituyen una de las formas de lenguaje más antiguas y la medicina, desde tiempos remotos, ha estado representada por varios de ellos. Dos de los más empleados han sido la vara de Esculapio y el caduceo de Hermes, este último de forma incorrecta. El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo argumentar por qué la vara de Esculapio es considerada el símbolo internacional de la medicina. Para ello se consultó un total de 14 fuentes bibliográficas. Se concluyó que estos símbolos representan a dos sectores o profesiones totalmente diferentes. El trabajo pone de relieve la importancia de conocer sobre el símbolo de la medicina, por el mensaje humano y ético que ha portado con el paso de los años.
