Seed crop production systems of velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens L.) were assessed in two field studies for ecosystem services. At flowering stage, long duration genotype Arka Shubra was significantly superior in biomass accumulation (14.61 t ha−1), while 100% recommended NPK + 15 t FYM ha−1 registered significantly higher biomass production (11.74 t ha−1). Biomass availability at harvest was higher in long duration genotypes (7.48–7.75 t ha−1) and the average biomass availability of 6.45 t ha−1 at harvest gives scope for including velvet bean as component crop in cropping systems/fallows. The average soil carbon stocks were estimated at 22.8 t ha−1 at the end of 2 yrs and 12.4 t ha−1 at the end of one crop season. Soil nutrient availability was optimum except for soil test P in pre-, standing and post crop growth periods. Highly significant relations (R2 = 0.949) were observed between nodule number and available N at harvest. The N availability was more in long duration genotypes (209–215 kg N ha−1) over pre-experimental status. Nutrient addition improved the available N status by 40–185 kg ha−1 over pre-experimental status and control. The nutrient uptake was 4–10% higher in Arka Shubra over other long duration genotypes and 100–200% higher over medium/short duration genotypes at flowering. The recyclable biomass and uptake of NPK are more in long duration genotypes implying huge nutrient recycling potential of the system. Availability of dwarfing rootstocks is an important pre-requisite for improving productivity of mango orchards in India as it facilitates high density planting as well as impart uniformity within an orchard. An attempt was made to induce variability in polyembryonic mango genotype Nekkare for dwarfness by treating kernels with different doses of gamma radiation ranging from 15 to 35 Gy. Irradiation created significant variation in plant height, stem girth, number of nodes, inter-nodal length, number of leaves, leaf blade length and leaf blade width. The highest reduction in seedling height along with highest variation was observed at 35 Gy where the seedling height ranged from 11.50 to 33 cm with a mean of 23.12 cm as compared to mean plant height of 44.55 cm in control ranging from 33.50 to 56 cm. Further, the effect of irradiation on stomatal parameters was also investigated and the highest stomatal length and width was recorded at 15 Gy (63.39 μm) and 20 Gy (63.12 μm) respectively while 30 Gy treatment produced maximum stomatal density (13.85 per μm2). Furthermore, the concentration of ABA was found to be highest (429.1 ng/gm) in morphologically dwarf (putative mutant) progenies of Nekkare. The results suggest effectiveness of induced mutation for developing dwarfing rootstocks in mango to be used in high density planting.

Introduction: The shock index (SI), modified shock index (MSI), and age multiplied by SI (ASI) are used to assess the severity of shock. They are also used to predict the mortality of trauma patients, but their validity for sepsis patients is controversial. The aim of this study is to assess the predictive value of the SI, MSI, and ASI in predicting the need for mechanical ventilation after 24 h of admission among sepsis patients. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital. Patients with sepsis (235) diagnosed based on systemic inflammatory response syndrome criteria and quick sequential organ failure assessment were included in the study. The need for mechanical ventilation after 24 h is the outcome variables MSI, SI, and ASI were considered as predictor variables. The utility of MSI, SI, and ASI in predicting mechanical ventilation was assessed by receiver operative curve analysis. Data were analyzed using coGuide. Results: Among the study population, the mean age was 56.12 ± 17.28 years. MSI value at the time of disposition from the emergency room had good predictive validity in predicting mechanical ventilation after 24 h, as indicated by the area under the curve (AUC) of 0.81 (P < 0.001), SI and ASI had fair predictive validity for mechanical ventilation as indicated by AUC (0.78, P < 0.001) and (0.802, P < 0.001), respectively. Conclusion: SI had better sensitivity (78.57%) and specificity (77.07%) compared to ASI and MSI in predicting the need for mechanical ventilation after 24 h in sepsis patients admitted to intensive care units. An experiment was conducted to standardize the isolation and screening protocol Phytophthora nicotianae on betel vine to identify the resistance source. The artificial inoculation was carried out by detached leaf assay (pin prick method) and drenching with spore suspension for the root. The result showed that carrot agar was suitable for active culture subsistence, and the pin prick method was the best method for inoculation and screening. Among the inter-specific hybrids used in the present investigation, IIHRPBIH9 recorded significant resistance to Phytophthora foot rot compared to the susceptible check IIHRBV170. Thus, screening of inter-specific hybrids for this disease through artificial inoculation helps to identify resistance sources for the breeding programme, thereby meeting the demand for superior quality, disease-free planting materials and effective disease management. This article reports the first occurrence of Plasmopara sphagneticolae causing downy mildew on bhringraj (Eclipta alba) in India. Bhringraj is a valuable herb commonly used in ayurvedic and traditional medicine in the Indian subcontinent. The disease was observed in experimental plots in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, and resulted in significant yield loss. The pathogen was identified through microscopic observation and DNA analysis, confirming its identity as Plasmopara sphagneticolae. A field experiment was conducted to know the gene action and selection of superior parents of velvet bean for hybridization. The heterosis and combining ability study was carried out using 6x6 half diallel mating design excluding reciprocals. Combining ability analysis revealed that magnitude of sca variance was greater than gca variance suggesting the predominance of non additive gene action for most of the traits except days to 50 per cent flowering, number of flowers per inflorescence, number of pods per bunch and 100 seed weight where gca variance was greater than sca variance indicating predominance of additive gene action. Based on gca effects, parents Arka Dhanwantari, IIHR Selection 8 and IIHR Selection 2 were best general combiners for the traits such as number of flowers per inflorescence, pod length, pod weight, number of bunches per plant, number of pods per bunch, dry pod yield and seed yield per plant which can be used in future breeding programme. Specific combining ability studies indicated cross IIHR Selection 2 x IIHR Selection 8 as best specific combiner for the economically important traits viz., pod length, pod weight, dry pod yield per plant and seed yield per plant. The cross IIHR Selection 8 x IIHR Selection 3 was recorded high heterotic effects for dry pod yield per plant, seed yield per plant and test weight of the seed. The cross IIHR Selection 2 x IIHR Selection 8 as superior hybrid as recorded high heterobeltiosis for days to 50% flowering, pod length, pod weight, dry pod yield per plant and seed yield per plant and days to maturity which can be exploited in future breeding programme.
