6. From local constraints to global binocular motion perception

Abstract

Humans and many other predators have two eyes that are set a short distance apart so that an extensive region of the world is seen simultaneously by both eyes from slightly different points of view. Although the images of the world are essentially two-dimensional, we vividly see the world as three-dimensional. This is true for static as well as dynamic images. We discuss local constraints for the perception of three-dimensional binocular motion in a geometric-probabilistic framework. It is shown that Bayesian models of binocular 3D motion can explain perceptual bias under uncertainty and predict perceived velocity under ambiguity. The models exploit biologically plausible constraints of local motion and disparity processing in a binocular viewing geometry. Results from psychophysical experiments and an fMRI study support the idea that local constraints of motion and disparity processing are combined late in the visual processing hierarchy to establish perceived 3D motion direction. The methods and results reported here are likely to stimulate computational, psychophysical, and neuroscientific research because they address the fundamental issue of how 3D motion is represented in the human visual system.

Abstract

25 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas, Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele., This work was funded by a grant (EADB) from the EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research. Abstract

This paper aims to identify the central focus, the main used arguments, the theoretical bases and the central conclusions about interorganizational cooperation in the end of 1990. The research is guided through the revision of the specialized literature and it concludes that the scientific works on the field of cooperation strategy follow three types of approaches: investigations concerning the relationship between the use of cooperative strategies and the performance of the firms or as source of a competitive advantage; studies on the process of formation of the interorganizational cooperative arrangements; and the construction of models and frameworks emphasizing the aspects under the interfirm relationships. In this sense this paper also identify the theoretical approaches underlying the works on this field of the strategic administration and interorganizational cooperative relationships.

Abstract

O presente artigo, de natureza exploratória, teve como objetivo investigar o papel da formação de uma rede de relacionamentos (capital social) enquanto elemento de sucesso no estabelecimento de parcerias ou alianças de cooperação entre organizações, em especial no sentido da efetivação do princípio de intercooperação entre as organizações cooperativas. Para atender a este objetivo, foram realizadas entrevistas em profundidade com os gestores de seis dentre as dez maiores cooperativas gaúchas. A análise dos dados foi feita qualitativamente à luz do referencial teórico utilizado no estudo, tomando-se como material de análise os documentos que foram disponibilizados e as transcrições das entrevistas. Como resultado, verificou-se a importância das redes de relacionamentos interpessoais (capital social) para a efetivação das ações de cooperação, ao promover credibilidade, segurança e confiabilidade. As entrevistas também revelaram a valorização do princípio da intercooperação, pois grande parte das ações de cooperação estabelecidas pelas organizações cooperativas se dá com outras cooperativas. Estas ações de cooperação promovidas pelas cooperativas têm como principais motivos a complementaridade de objetivos e a melhor utilização das capacidades produtivas, com vistas à melhoria dos resultados econômicos e financeiros. Abstract The present article, of exploratória nature, had as objective to investigate the paper of the formation of a net of relationships (social capital while element of success in the establishment of partnerships or alliances of cooperation between organizations, in special in the direction of the efetivação of the principle of intercooperação between the cooperative organizations. To take care of to this objective, interviews in depth with the managers of six amongst the ten cooperative greaters gauchos had been carried through. The analysis of the data was made qualitatively to the light of the theoretical referencial used in the analysis study, being overcome as material the documents that had been disponibilizados and the transcriptions of the interviews. As result, importance of the nets of interpersonal relationships (capital stock) for the efetivação of the actions of cooperation was verified it, when promoting credibility, security and trustworthiness. The interviews had also disclosed the valuation of the principle of the intercooperação, therefore great part of the actions of cooperation established by the cooperative organizations if gives with other cooperatives. These actions of cooperation promoted by the cooperatives have as main reasons the complementaridade of objectives and the best use of the productive capacities, with sights to the improvement of the economic and financial results. A importância e o crescimento do agronegócio para a economia brasileira reflete a necessidade de formação de capital humano como fator estratégico para a competitividade do setor. Neste sentido, este artigo procura demonstrar como as instituições brasileiras de ensino e pesquisa estão buscando oferecer oportunidades de qualificação de profissionais de alto nível voltados à gestão das organizações do agronegócio. Verificou-se que não existe um vínculo muito próximo entre grupos de pesquisa e oferta de pós-graduação lato sensu e que a oferta de cursos superiores em agronegócios está, na sua maior parte, constituída por habilitações dos cursos de Administração, sem maior ênfase nos aspectos multidisciplinares e sistêmicos que deveriam envolver a formação de profissionais de gestão do agronegócio.

29. Unravelling the links between heat stress, bleaching and disease:fate of tabular corals following a combined disease and bleaching event

Abstract

While links between heat stress and coral bleaching are clear and predictive tools for bleaching risk are well advanced, links between heat stress and outbreaks of coral diseases are less well understood. In this study, the effects of accumulated heat stress on tagged colonies of tabular Acropora were monitored over the 2017 austral summer at Beaver Reef, which is located in the central region of the Great Barrier Reef. The initial surveys in midsummer (21 February) coincided with an accumulated heat stress metric of 4.5 °C-weeks, and documented high coral cover (74.0 ± 6.5%), extensive bleaching (71% of all corals displayed bleaching signs) and an outbreak of white syndromes (WSs) (31% of tabular acroporid corals displayed white syndrome signs). Repeat assessments of the impacts of bleaching and disease on these corals provided real-time information to reef managers by tracking the unfolding reef health incident on 100 colonies of Acropora hyacinthus (Dana, 1846), tagged in mid-March and surveyed intermittently until late October 2017. Heat stress increased rapidly on Beaver Reef, peaking at 8.3 °C-weeks on 31 March, which coincided with the highest prevalence of WS recorded in the study. Of the 85 tagged colonies surviving on 31 March, 41 (~ 48%) displayed WS signs, indicating a link between heat stress and WS. When re-surveyed at eight months (24 October), 68 of 100 tagged colonies had suffered whole-colony mortality and only four colonies had not displayed signs of bleaching or disease (WS) in any of our surveys. Overall, coral cover on Beaver Reef was reduced by more than half to 31.0 ± 11.2%. Significant tissue loss due to severe bleaching was observed with up to 20 times greater tissue loss on severely bleached colonies (i.e. categorised as > 50% bleached) compared to mildly/moderately bleached colonies (< 50% bleached) at the heat stress peak (31 March). Abstract

Tropical reef systems are transitioning to a new era in which the interval between recurrent bouts of coral bleaching is too short for a full recovery of mature assemblages. We analyzed bleaching records at 100 globally distributed reef locations from 1980 to 2016. The median return time between pairs of severe bleaching events has diminished steadily since 1980 and is now only 6 years. As global warming has progressed, tropical sea surface temperatures are warmer now during current La Niña conditions than they were during El Niño events three decades ago. Consequently, as we transition to the Anthropocene, coral bleaching is occurring more frequently in all El Niño-Southern Oscillation phases, increasing the likelihood of annual bleaching in the coming decades.

Abstract

During 2015-2016, record temperatures triggered a pan-tropical episode of coral bleaching, the third global-scale event since mass bleaching was first documented in the 1980s. Here we examine how and why the severity of recurrent major bleaching events has varied at multiple scales, using aerial and underwater surveys of Australian reefs combined with satellite-derived sea surface temperatures. The distinctive geographic footprints of recurrent bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef in 1998, 2002 and 2016 were determined by the spatial pattern of sea temperatures in each year. Water quality and fishing pressure had minimal effect on the unprecedented bleaching in 2016, suggesting that local protection of reefs affords little or no resistance to extreme heat. Similarly, past exposure to bleaching in 1998 and 2002 did not lessen the severity of bleaching in 2016. Consequently, immediate global action to curb future warming is essential to secure a future for coral reefs.

Abstract

International audience; Optical Helmholtz resonators are absorbing devices for a single wavelength over a wide spectral range. They are composed of a grating of metallic cavities communicating with the outer medium through a metallic aperture. At resonance, they display zero reflectivity and the incoming electric field is heavily concentrated in this aperture. If the latter is filled with a non linear medium, this huge confinement leads the creation of a great quantity of non linear polarization. Here we seek the best geometry to obtain the highest output efficiency for second harmonic generation and to have very involved wavelength resonant. This situation called mode matching is here achieved thanks to both the grating of resonators and the cavity itself.

Abstract

International audience; We exhibit rules to conceive metal-insulator-metal resonators that resonantly enhance second order frequency generation processes. They behave as nano-antennas providing multiple resonances which are driven by independent geometrical parameters. Coexistence of multiple wavelengths that respect the energy conservation conditions of second order frequency conversion schemes is thus possible in these structures. Such antennas also confines incoming electric field at resonance therefore favoring non linear processes through the creation of greater quantities of non linear polarization in cavities filled with a non linear material. Here we exploit these properties by adding a non linear blende type crystal in the concentration regions of these resonators to resonantly enhance Second Harmonic or Difference Frequency Generation.
