Search

T Tauri has long been the prototypical young pre-main-sequence star. However, it has now been decomposed into a triple system with a complex disk and outflow geometry. We aim to measure the brightness of all three components of the T Tauri system (T Tau N, T Tau Sa, T Tau Sb) in the mid-infrared in order to obtain photometry around the $\sim 9.7~\mu m$ silicate feature. This allows us to study their variability and to investigate the distribution of dust and the geometry of circumstellar and circumbinary disks in this complex system. We observe T Tauri with the VLT/VISIR-NEAR instrument. With kernel phase interferometry post-processing of the data, and using the astrometric positions of all three components from VLT/SPHERE, we measure the three components' individual brightnesses (including the southern binary at an angular separation down to $\sim 0.2~\lambda/D$) and obtain their photometry. In order to validate our methods, we simulate and recover mock data of the T Tauri system using the observed reference point-spread function of HD 27639. We find that T Tau N is rather stable and shows weak silicate emission, while T Tau Sa is highly variable and shows prominent silicate absorption. T Tau Sb became significantly fainter compared to data from 2004 and 2006, suggesting increased extinction by dust. The precision of our photometry is limited by systematic errors, which is consistent with previous studies using kernel phase interferometry. Our results confirm the complex scenario of misaligned disks in the T Tauri system that had been observed previously, and they are in agreement with the recently observed dimming of T Tau Sb in the near-infrared. Our mid-infrared photometry supports the interpretation that T Tau Sb has moved behind the dense region of the Sa-Sb circumbinary disk on its tight orbit around Sa, therefore suffering increased extinction., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

T Tauri remains an enigmatic triple star for which neither the evolutionary state of the stars themselves, nor the geometry of the complex outflow system is completely understood. Eight-meter class telescopes equipped with state-of-the-art adaptive optics provide the spatial resolution necessary to trace tangential motion of features over a timescale of a few years, and they help to associate them with the different outflows. We used J-, H-, and K-band high-contrast coronagraphic imaging with VLT-SPHERE recorded between 2016 and 2018 to map reflection nebulosities and obtain high precision near-infrared (NIR) photometry of the triple star. We also present molecular hydrogen emission maps of the 1-0 S(1) line at 2.122 micron obtained with LBT-LUCI during its commissioning period at the end of 2016. The data reveal a number of new features in the system, some of which are seen in reflected light and some are seen in H2 emission; furthermore, they can all be associated with the main outflows. The tangential motion of the features provides compelling evidence that T Tauri Sb drives the southeast-northwest outflow. T Tauri Sb has recently faded probably because of increased extinction as it passes through the southern circumbinary disk. A multiwavelength campaign was organized to take place between March and July of 2012. Excellent temporal coverage was obtained with more than 25 instruments, including the MAGIC, FACT and VERITAS Cherenkov telescopes, the instruments on board the Swift and Fermi spacecraft, and the telescopes operated by the GASP-WEBT collaboration. Mrk 501 showed a very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray flux above 0.2 TeV of $\sim$0.5 times the Crab Nebula flux (CU) for most of the campaign. The highest activity occurred on 2012 June 9, when the VHE flux was $\sim$3 CU, and the peak of the high-energy spectral component was found to be at $\sim$2 TeV. This study reports very hard X-ray spectra, and the hardest VHE spectra measured to date for Mrk 501. The fractional variability was found to increase with energy, with the highest variability occurring at VHE, and a significant correlation between the X-ray and VHE bands. The unprecedentedly hard X-ray and VHE spectra measured imply that their low- and high-energy components peaked above 5 keV and 0.5 TeV, respectively, during a large fraction of the observing campaign, and hence that Mrk 501 behaved like an extreme high-frequency- peaked blazar (EHBL) throughout the 2012 observing season. This suggests that being an EHBL may not be a permanent characteristic of a blazar, but rather a state which may change over time. The one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scenario can successfully describe the segments of the SED where most energy is emitted, with a significant correlation between the electron energy density and the VHE gamma-ray activity, suggesting that most of the variability may be explained by the injection of high-energy electrons. The one-zone SSC scenario used reproduces the behaviour seen between the measured X-ray and VHE gamma-ray fluxes, and predicts that the correlation becomes stronger with increasing energy of the X-rays., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. LINC-NIRVANA (LN) is a high resolution, near infrared imager that uses a multiple field-of-view, layer-oriented, multi-conjugate AO system, consisting of four multi-pyramid wavefront sensors (two for each arm of the Large Binocular Telescope, each conjugated to a different altitude). The system employs up to 40 star probes, looking at up to 20 natural guide stars simultaneously. Its final goal is to perform Fizeau interferometric imaging, thereby achieving ELT-like spatial resolution (22.8 m baseline resolution). For this reason, LN is also equipped with a fringe tracker, a beam combiner and a NIR science camera, for a total of more than 250 optical components and an overall size of approximately 6x4x4.5 meters. This paper describes the tradeoffs evaluated in order to achieve the alignment of the system to the telescope. We note that LN is comparable in size to planned ELT instrumentation. The impact of such alignment strategies will be compared and the selected procedure, where the LBT telescope is, in fact, aligned to the instrument, will be described. The immediate vicinity of T Tauri was observed with the new high-contrast imaging instrument SPHERE at the VLT to resolve remaining mysteries of the system, such as the putative small edge-on disk around T Tauri Sa, and the assignment of the complex outflow patterns to the individual stars. We used SPHERE IRDIS narrow-band classical imaging in Pa$\beta$, Br$\gamma$, and the $\nu$ = 1-0 S(1) line of H$_2$, as well as in the nearby continua to obtain high spatial resolution and high contrast images over the NIR spectral range. Line maps were created by subtracting the nearby continuum. We also re--analyzed coronagraphic data taken with SPHERE's integral field spectrograph in $J$- and $H$-band with the goal to obtain a precise extinction estimate to T Tauri Sb, and to verify the recently reported claim of another stellar or substellar object in the system. A previously unknown coiling structure is observed southwest of the stars in reflected light, which points to the vicinity of T Tauri N. We map the circumbinary emission from T Tauri S in $J$- and $H$-band scattered light for the first time, showing a morphology which differs significantly from that observed in $K$-band. H$_2$ emission is found southwest of the stars, near the coiling structure. We also detect the H$_2$ emitting region T Tauri NW. The motion of T Tauri NW with respect to T Tauri N and S between previous images and our 2014 data, provides strong evidence that the Southeast-Northwest outflow triggering T Tauri NW is likely to be associated with T Tauri S. We further present accurate relative photometry of the stars, confirming that T Tauri Sa is brightening again. We present new astrometric measurements of the components in the T Tauri system, and derive new orbits and masses. T Tauri was observed during the science verification time of the new extreme adaptive optics facility SPHERE at the VLT. We combine the new positions with recalibrated NACO-measurements and data from the literature. Model fits for the orbits of T Tau Sa and Sb around each other and around T Tau N yield orbital elements and individual masses of the stars Sa and Sb. Our new orbit for T Tau Sa/Sb is in good agreement with other recent results, which indicates that enough of the orbit has been observed for a reliable fit. The total mass of T Tau S is 2.65+/-0.11 Msun. The mass ratio M_Sb:M_Sa is 0.25+/-0.03, which yields individual masses of M_Sa = 2.12+/-0.10 Msun and M_Sb = 0.53+/-0.06 Msun. If our current knowledge of the orbital motions is used to compute the position of the southern radio source in the T Tauri system, then we find no evidence for the proposed dramatic change in its path., Comment: accepted by A&A, 8 pages, 8 figures, can be printed in greyscale

We investigate the stability of the Sarma phase in two-component fermion systems in three spatial dimensions. For this purpose we compare strongly-correlated systems with either relativistic or non-relativistic dispersion relation: relativistic quarks and mesons at finite isospin density and spin-imbalanced ultracold Fermi gases. Using a Functional Renormalization Group approach, we resolve fluctuation effects onto the corresponding phase diagrams beyond the mean-field approximation. We find that fluctuations induce a second order phase transition at zero temperature, and thus a Sarma phase, in the relativistic setup for large isospin chemical potential. This motivates the investigation of the cold atoms setup with comparable mean-field phase structure, where the Sarma phase could then be realized in experiment. However, for the non-relativistic system we find the stability region of the Sarma phase to be smaller than the one predicted from mean-field theory. It is limited to the BEC side of the phase diagram, and the unitary Fermi gas does not support a Sarma phase at zero temperature. Finally, we propose an ultracold quantum gas with four fermion species that has a good chance to realize a zero-temperature Sarma phase., Comment: version published in Phys.Lett.B; 10 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the phase structure of spin-imbalanced unitary Fermi gases beyond mean-field theory by means of the Functional Renormalization Group. In this approach, quantum and thermal fluctuations are resolved in a systematic manner. The discretization of the effective potential on a grid allows us to accurately account for both first- and second-order phase transitions that are present on the mean-field level. We compute the full phase diagram in the plane of temperature and spin-imbalance and discuss the existence of other conjectured phases such as the Sarma phase and a precondensation region. In addition, we explain on a qualitative level how we expect that in-situ density images are affected by our findings and which experimental signatures may potentially be used to probe the phase structure., Comment: version published in Phys.Rev.A; 14 pages, 6 figures

We report the confirmation of the binary nature of the nearby, very low-mass system NLTT 33370 with adaptive optics imaging and present resolved near-infrared photometry and integrated light optical and near-infrared spectroscopy to characterize the system. VLT-NaCo and LBTI-LMIRCam images show significant orbital motion between 2013 February and 2013 April. Optical spectra reveal weak, gravity sensitive alkali lines and strong lithium 6708 Angstrom absorption that indicate the system is younger than field age. VLT-SINFONI near-IR spectra also show weak, gravity sensitive features and spectral morphology that is consistent with other young, very low-mass dwarfs. We combine the constraints from all age diagnostics to estimate a system age of ~30-200 Myr. The 1.2-4.7 micron spectral energy distribution of the components point toward T_eff=3200 +/- 500 K and T_eff=3100 +/- 500 K for NLTT 33370 A and B, respectively. The observed spectra, derived temperatures, and estimated age combine to constrain the component spectral types to the range M6-M8. Evolutionary models predict masses of 113 +/- 8 M_Jup and 106 +/- 7 M_Jup from the estimated luminosities of the components. KPNO-Phoenix spectra allow us to estimate the systemic radial velocity of the binary. The Galactic kinematics of NLTT 33370AB are broadly consistent with other young stars in the Solar neighborhood. However, definitive membership in a young, kinematic group cannot be assigned at this time and further follow-up observations are necessary to fully constrain the system's kinematics. The proximity, age, and late-spectral type of this binary make it very novel and an ideal target for rapid, complete orbit determination. The formation scenario for massive stars is still under discussion. To further constrain current theories, it is vital to spatially resolve the structures from which material accretes onto massive young stellar objects (MYSOs). Due to the small angular extent of MYSOs, one needs to overcome the limitations of conventional thermal infrared imaging, regarding spatial resolution, in order to get observational access to the inner structure of these objects.We employed mid - infrared interferometry, using the MIDI instrument on the ESO /VLTI, to investigate the Kleinmann - Wright Object, a massive young stellar object previously identified as a Herbig Be star precursor. Dispersed visibility curves in the N- band (8 - 13 {\mu}m) have been obtained at 5 interferometric baselines. We show that the mid - infrared emission region is resolved. A qualitative analysis of the data indicates a non - rotationally symmetric structure, e.g. the projection of an inclined disk. We employed extensive radiative transfer simulations based on spectral energy distribution fitting. Since SED - only fitting usually yields degenerate results, we first employed a statistical analysis of the parameters provided by the radiative transfer models. In addition, we compared the ten best - fitting self - consistent models to the interferometric observations. Our analysis of the Kleinmann - Wright Object suggests the existence of a circumstellar disk of 0.1M\odot at an intermediate inclination of 76\circ, while an additional dusty envelope is not necessary for fitting the data. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the combination of IR interferometry with radiative transfer simulations has the potential to resolve ambiguities arising from the analysis of spectral energy distributions alone., Comment: 12 pages, 22 figures accepted for publication in A&A

To enhance our knowledge of the characteristics and distribution of the circumstellar dust associated with the individual components of the young hierarchical triple system T Tau, observations in the N-band with MIDI at the VLTI were performed. Our study is based on both the interferometric and the spectrophotometric measurements and is supplemented by new visual and infrared photometry. Also, the phases were investigated to determine the dominating mid-infrared source in the close southern binary. The data were fit with the help of a sophisticated physical disc model. This model utilises the radiative transfer code MC3D that is based on the Monte-Carlo method. Extended mid-infrared emission is found around all three components of the system. Simultaneous fits to the photometric and interferometric data confirm the picture of an almost face-on circumstellar disc around T Tau N. Towards this star, the silicate band is seen in emission. This emission feature is used to model the dust content of the circumstellar disc. Clear signs of dust processing are found. Towards T Tau S, the silicate band is seen in absorption. This absorption is strongly pronounced towards the infrared companion T Tau Sa as can be seen from the first individual N-band spectra for the two southern components. Our fits support the previous suggestion that an almost edge-on disc is present around T Tau Sa. This disc is thus misaligned with respect to the circumstellar disc around T Tau N. The interferometric data indicate that the disc around T Tau Sa is oriented in the north-south direction, which favours this source as launching site for the east-western jet. We present two design concepts and the science drivers of a proposed near-infrared interferometric integral field spectrograph for the LBT. This instrument will expand the capabilities of the currently-under-construction interferometric camera LINC-NIRVANA with spectroscopy by means of an integral field unit (IFU) located inside the LINC cryostat. Two instrument concepts have been studied in detail: a microlens array IFU with a spectrograph built entirely inside LINC (the LIINUS approach), and a lenslet+fibers IFU feeding an external spectrograph (the SERPIL approach). In both cases, the instrument incorporates imaging interferometry with integral field spectroscopy, an ideal combination for detailed studies of astronomical objects down to below 10mas angular resolution in the near-infrared. We present deep imaging of the star-forming dwarf galaxy IC2574 in the M81 group taken with the Large Binocular Telescope in order to study in detail the recent star-formation history of this galaxy and to constrain the stellar feedback on its HI gas. We identify the star-forming areas in the galaxy by removing a smooth disk component from the optical images. We construct pixel-by-pixel maps of stellar age and stellar mass surface density in these regions by comparing their observed colors with simple stellar populations synthesized with STARBURST99. We find that an older burst occurred about 100 Myr ago within the inner 4 kpc and that a younger burst happened in the last 10 Myr mostly at galactocentric radii between 4 and 8 kpc. We analyze the stellar populations residing in the known HI holes of IC2574. Our results indicate that, even at the remarkable photometric depth of the LBT data, there is no clear one-to-one association between the observed HI holes and the most recent bursts of star formation in IC2574. The stellar populations formed during the younger burst are usually located at the periphery of the HI holes and are seen to be younger than the holes dynamical age. The kinetic energy of the holes expansion is found to be on average 10% of the total stellar energy released by the stellar winds and supernova explosions of the young stellar populations within the holes. With the help of control apertures distributed across the galaxy we estimate that the kinetic energy stored in the HI gas in the form of its local velocity dispersion is about 35% of the total stellar energy., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the detection of quiescent H2 emission in a spatially resolved ring-like structure within 100 AU of T Tau N. We present evidence to show that the emission most likely arises from shocks in the atmosphere of a nearly face-on disk around T Tau N. Using high spatial resolution 3D spectroscopic K-band data, we trace the spatial distribution of several H2 NIR rovibrational lines in the vicinity of T Tau N. We detect weak H2 emission from the v=1-0 S(0), S(1), Q(1) lines and the v=2-1 S(1) line in a ring-like structure around T Tau N between 0.1'' (~15 AU) and 0.7'' (~100AU) from the star. The v=1-0 S(0) and v=2-1 S(1) lines are detected only in the outer parts of the ring structure. Closer to the star, the strong continuum limits our sensitivity to these lines. The total flux of the v=1-0 S(1) line is 1.8 *10^{-14} ergs s^{-1}cm^{-2}, similar to previous measurements of H2 in circumstellar disks. The velocity of the H2 emitting gas around T Tau N is consistent with the rest velocity of the star, and the H2 does not seem to be part of a collimated outflow. Both shocks impinging on the surface of a disk and irradiation of a disk by UV-photons and X-rays from the central star are plausible candidates for the H2 excitation mechanism. However, irradiation should not create a large degree of excitation at radii larger than 20 AU. Most likely the H2 emission arises in the atmosphere of a flared disk with radius 85-100 AU and mass 0.005-0.5Msun, where the gas is excited by shocks created when a wide-angle wind impinges on the disk. The H2 emission could also originate from shock excitation in the cavity walls of an envelope, but this requires an unusually high velocity of the wide-angle wind from T Tau N., Comment: Accepted by A&A

The discovery of extra-solar planets is one of the greatest achievements of modern astronomy. The detection of planets with a wide range of masses demonstrates that extra-solar planets of low mass exist. In this paper we describe a mission, called Darwin, whose primary goal is the search for, and characterization of, terrestrial extrasolar planets and the search for life. Accomplishing the mission objectives will require collaborative science across disciplines including astrophysics, planetary sciences, chemistry and microbiology. Darwin is designed to detect and perform spectroscopic analysis of rocky planets similar to the Earth at mid-infrared wavelengths (6 - 20 micron), where an advantageous contrast ratio between star and planet occurs. The baseline mission lasts 5 years and consists of approximately 200 individual target stars. Among these, 25 to 50 planetary systems can be studied spectroscopically, searching for gases such as CO2, H2O, CH4 and O3. Many of the key technologies required for the construction of Darwin have already been demonstrated and the remainder are estimated to be mature in the near future. Darwin is a mission that will ignite intense interest in both the research community and the wider public.

We investigate the binary star T Tauri South, presenting the orbital parameters of the two components and their individual masses. We combined astrometric positions from the literature with previously unpublished VLT observations. Model fits yield the orbital elements of T Tau Sa and Sb. We use T Tau N as an astrometric reference to derive an estimate for the mass ratio of Sa and Sb. Although most of the orbital parameters are not well constrained, it is unlikely that T Tau Sb is on a highly elliptical orbit or escaping from the system. The total mass of T Tau S is rather well constrained to 3.0 +0.15/-0.24 M_sun. The mass ratio Sb:Sa is about 0.4, corresponding to individual masses of M_Sa = 2.1+/-0.2 M_sun and M_Sb = 0.8+/-0.1 M_sun. This confirms that the infrared companion in the T Tauri system is a pair of young stars obscured by circumstellar material., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

The core of the nebula surrounding Eta Carinae has recently been observed with VLT/NACO, VLTI/VINCI, VLTI/MIDI and VLTI/AMBER in order to spatially and spectrally constrain the warm dusty environment and the central object. Narrow-band images at 3.74 and 4.05 micron reveal the structured butterfly-shaped dusty environment close to the central star with an unprecedented spatial resolution of about 60 mas. VINCI has resolved the present-day stellar wind of Eta Carinae on a scale of several stellar radii owing to the spatial resolution of the order of 5 mas (11 AU). The VINCI observations show that the object is elongated with a de-projected axis ratio of approximately 1.5. Moreover the major axis is aligned with that of the large bipolar nebula that was ejected in the 19th century. Fringes have also been obtained in the Mid-IR with MIDI using baselines of 75m. A peak of correlated flux of 100 Jy is detected 0.3" south-east from the photocenter of the nebula at 8.7 micron is detected. This correlated flux is partly attributed to the central object but it is worth noting that at these wavelengths, virtually all the 0.5" x 0.5" central area can generate detectable fringes witnessing the large clumping of the dusty ejecta. These observations provide an upper limit for the SED of the central source from 3.8 to 13.5 micron and constrain some parameters of the stellar wind which can be compared to Hillier's model. Lastly, we present the great potential of the AMBER instrument to study the numerous near-IR emissive lines from the star and its close vicinity. The core of the nebula surrounding Eta Carinae has been observed with the VLT Adaptive Optics system NACO and with the interferometer VLTI/MIDI to constrain spatially and spectrally the warm dusty environment and the central object. In particular, narrow-band images at 3.74 and 4.05 micron reveal the butterfly shaped dusty environment close to the central star with unprecedented spatial resolution. A void whose radius corresponds to the expected sublimation radius has been discovered around the central source. Fringes have been obtained in the Mid-IR which reveal a correlated flux of about 100Jy situated 0.3" south-east of the photocenter of the nebula at 8.7 micron, which corresponds with the location of the star as seen in other wavelengths. This correlated flux is partly attributed to the central object, and these observations provide an upper limit for the SED of the central source from 2.2 to 13.5 micron. Moreover, we have been able to spectrally disperse the signal from the nebula itself at PA=318 degree, i.e. in the direction of the bipolar nebula 310 degree) within the MIDI field of view of 3". A large amount of corundum (Al2O3) is discovered, peaking at 0.6-1.2" south-east from the star, whereas the dust content of the Weigelt blobs is dominated b silicates. We discuss the mechanisms of dust formation which are closely related to the geometry of this Butterfly nebulae.

We present the first VLTI/MIDI observations of the Be star Alpha Ara, showing a nearly unresolved circumstellar disk in the N band. The interferometric measurements made use of the UT1 and UT3 telescopes. The projected baselines were 102 and 74 meters with position angles of 7 degres and 55 degres, respectively. These measurements put an upper limit to the envelope size in the N band under the Uniform disk approximation of $\phi_{\rm max}= 4\pm1.5$ mas, corresponding to 14 $R_{\star}$, assuming $R_{\star}$=4.8${\rm R}_\odot$ and the Hipparcos distance of 74pc. On the other hand the disk density must be large enough to produce the observed strong Balmer line emission. In order to estimate the possible circumstellar and stellar parameters we have used the SIMECA code developed by Stee (1995) and Stee & Bittar (2001). Optical spectra taken with the echelle instrument Heros and the ESO-50cm telescope, as well as infrared ones from the 1.6m Brazilian telescope have been used together with the MIDI spectra and visibilities. These observations put complementary constraints on the density and geometry of Alpha Ara circumstellar disk. We discuss on the potential truncation of the disk by a companion and we present spectroscopic indications of a periodic perturbation of some Balmer lines., Comment: Accepted in A&A

We present two wide-field (5'x5'), diffraction limited, broad-band 10 and 20 micron images of the Orion Nebula, plus six 7-13 micron narrow-band images of BN/KL taken at the 3.8m UKIRT telescope. The wide-field images are mosaics of 35"x35" frames reconstructed using a new restoration method developed for this project. They show the filamentary structure of the dust emission and reveal a new remarkable group of arc-like structures ~1' to the South of the Trapezium. The morphology of the Ney-Allen nebula suggests a complex kinematical status at the center of the Cluster. We find indications that the B0.5V star theta1 Ori-D, is surrounded by a photoevaporated circumstellar disk. Among the four historic Trapezium OB stars, this is the only one without a binary companion, suggesting that stellar multiplicity and the presence of massive circumstellar disks may be mutually exclusive. In the BN/KL complex we detect optically thin silicate emission on top of the deep 10 micron absorption feature. We map the foreground optical depth, color temperature and mid-IR luminosity of the embedded sources. We resolve a conspicuous point source at the location of the IRc2-A knot. The spectral profile of the 10 micron feature is compatible with grain crystallization. We detect several point sources In the OMC-1 South region and discuss their association with the mass loss observed at optical and mm wavelengths. Finally, we list the position and photometry of 177 point sources. With two possible exceptions, all point sources detected at shorter wavelengths display 10 micron emission well above the photospheric level. The model of Robberto et al. We present new high angular resolution observations at near-IR wavelengths of the core of the Luminous Blue Variable Eta Carinae, using NAOS-CONICA at the VLT and VINCI at the VLT Interferometer (VLTI). The latter observations provide spatial information on a scale of 5 milli-arcsec or ~11 AU at the distance of Eta Carinae. The present-day stellar wind of Eta Carinae is resolved on a scale of several stellar radii. Assuming spherical symmetry, we find a mass loss rate of 1.6x10^{-3} M_sun/yr and a wind clumping factor of 0.26. The VLTI data taken at a baseline of 24 meter show that the object is elongated with a de-projected axis ratio of approximately 1.5; the major axis is aligned with that of the large bi-polar nebula that was ejected in the 19th century. The most likely explanation for this observation is a counter-intuitive model in which stellar rotation near the critical velocity causes enhanced mass loss along the rotation axis. This results from the large temperature difference between pole and equator in rapidly rotating stars. Eta Carinae must rotate in excess of 90 per cent of its critical velocity to account for the observed shape. The large outburst may have been shaped in a similar way. The small separation of the individual stellar components in the TTau system has prevented spectroscopy of the individual components in the near-infrared (NIR) in the past. We present NIR data (H- and K-band) on this object taken using the ALFA adaptive optics (AO) system in combination with the 3D integral field spectrograph. Except for the Brackett series seen in emission, the NIR spectra of \tts{} appear featureless, suggesting that warm dust dominates the radiation. No ro-vibrational lines of molecular hydrogen were found in close vicinity to the stars. The Brackett line emission from \ttn{} and S could not be resolved with the 3.5-m-telescope, implying that it arises within 6 AU from the stars. The line ratios between Br$\gamma$ (2.166 \mum{}) and Br10 (1.736 \mum{}) toward \ttn{} and \tts{} are similar, suggesting similar selective extinctions towards the respective emitting regions. Our results are consistent with a model that describes \tts{} as a pre-main sequence star surrounded by a small edge-on disk, leaving the polar regions relatively unobscured. One of the most important techniques for astrophysics with adaptive optics is the ability to do spectroscopy at diffraction limited scales. The extreme difficulty of positioning a faint target accurately on a very narrow slit can be avoided by using an integral field unit, which provides the added benefit of full spatial coverage. During 1998, working with ALFA and the 3D integral field spectrometer, we demonstrated the validity of this technique by extracting and distinguishing spectra from binary stars separated by only 0.26". The combination of ALFA & 3D is also ideally suited to imaging distant galaxies or the nuclei of nearby ones, as its field of view can be changed between 1.2"x1.2" and 4"x4", depending on the pixel scale chosen. We report preliminary results of a deep near-infrared search for methane-absorbing brown dwarfs; almost five years after the discovery of Gl 229b, there are only a few confirmed examples of this type of object. New J band, wide-field images, combined with pre-existing R band observations, allow efficient identification of candidates by their extreme (R-J) colours. Follow-up measurements with custom filters can then confirm objects with methane absorption. To date, we have surveyed a total of 11.4 square degrees to J~20.5 and R~25. Follow-up CH_4 filter observations of promising candidates in 1/4 of these fields have turned up no methane absorbing brown dwarfs. With 90% confidence, this implies that the space density of objects similar to Gl 229b is less than 0.012 per cubic parsec. These calculations account for the vertical structure of the Galaxy, which can be important for sensitive measurements. Combining published theoretical atmospheric models with our observations sets an upper limit of alpha <= 0.8 for the exponent of the initial mass function power law in this domain., Comment: 11 pages + 2 figures To be published in Astrophysical Journal Letters

We report mid--IR observations of two young stars found in the Taurus dark cloud spatially resolving for the first time their 10 $\mu$m emission. The weak-emission T Tauri star DI Tau, tentatively identified by Skrutskie et al. (1990) on the basis of 12 $\mu$m IRAS data as an object in the process of dissipating its circumstellar disk, is found to have no infrared excess at a wavelength of 10 $\mu$m. The nearby classical T Tauri star DH Tau exhibits excess emission at 10 $\mu$m consistent with predictions based on circumstellar disk models. While both objects appear to have the same stellar mass, age, and rotation rate, they differ in two fundamental respects: DH Tau is a single star with an active accretion disk and DI Tau is a binary system lacking such a disk. The companion to DI Tau has a very low luminosity and is located at a projected distance of $\sim 20$ A.U. from the primary. Assuming the system to be co-eval, we derive a mass below the hydrogen burning limit for the companion. We speculate that the formation of a sub-stellar mass companion has led to the rapid evolution of the circumstellar disk that may have surrounded DI Tau., Comment: Astrophysical Journal Letters, in press: 13 pages, latex, 2 figures
