7. Not so “generic” masculines: empirical studies on interpretations in Spanish and French

Abstract

In the debate over the validity of the use of so-called "generic masculines," academic positionings often refer to the interpretation of these forms, usually without citing empirical studies examining such interpretations. These empirical studies, which are often neglected in the debate, seek to examine through experiments or surveys whether masculine forms referring to human beings generate a specific interpretation (referring only to males) or a generic one (referring to human beings of either sex). The present review article proposes to remedy this lack of attention to the empirical aspects of the debate by first reviewing the existing literature on Spanish and then comparing it with the literature dealing with French data, thus forming an body of empirical evidence that allows for the discussion and understanding of current debates around (for example) the relevance or otherwise of inclusive language., En el debate sobre la validez del uso de los llamados “masculinos genéricos”, los posicionamientos académicos suelen hacer referencia a la interpretación de estas formas, generalmente sin citar estudios empíricos que examinen dichas interpretaciones. Estos estudios empíricos, que suelen ser dejados de lado en el debate, buscan examinar mediante experimentos o encuestas si las formas masculinas referentes a seres humanos generan una interpretación específica (referente únicamente a varones) o genérica (referente a seres humanos de cualquier sexo). El presente artículo de revisión propone remediar esa falta de atención a los aspectos empíricos del debate, revisando primero la literatura existente sobre el español y luego comparándola con la que trata datos del francés, conformando así un aparato de evidencia empírica adecuado para la discusión y comprensión de los debates actuales sobre (por ejemplo) la pertinencia o no del lenguaje inclusivo.

Le but de la présente étude est d’examiner les remplacements des clitiques par les enfants de langue catalane, quelle que soit leur dominance linguistique, qui acquièrent variablement les clitiques obliques hi et en. Nous analysons la plupart de ces cas de substitution à l’aide de la sous-spécification et de la géométrie des traits, mais pour un des cas, nous avons recours à des effets des contraintes à la complexité pour comprendre la substitution attestée., The aim of the present study is to examine clitic substitution–the extension of the use of a particular clitic in the paradigm–by Catalan-speaking children, whatever their dominant language, who variably acquire the oblique clitics hi and en. We analyse the majority of these cases of substitution within a theory of feature underspecification and feature geometry. One type of clitic substitution cannot, however, be accounted for with our proposed feature geometry. In this case, we propose that this unexpected outcome is due to a constraint on morphological complexity which results in recourse to more salient forms.

18. Notes sur la distribution géographique de certaines formes pronominales atones dans les parlers des Alpes‑Maritimes (PAM)

Nous analysons des données des cahiers PAM (Parlers des Alpes-Maritimes, Dalbera, 1994), provenant d’entrevues orales menées entre 1972 et 1981. Nous examinons les pronoms atones objets des différentes localités afin d’identifier les variations morphologiques à travers cette région ainsi que des systèmes pronominaux distincts. Nous comparons nos données avec celles des études antérieures, notamment les résultats de Dalbera (1985-1986, 1994) et de Sumien (2006). Nous constatons aussi une forme distincte (non syncrétique) pour le pronom datif à la troisième personne du pluriel, lor, que les locuteurs emploient dans seulement une des localités pour lesquelles nous avons des données, ainsi qu’une forme opaque, n’i’n, qui représente la fusion du pronom datif avec le pronom génitif dans la partie occidentale des Alpes-Maritimes. Nous comparons la distribution géographique de cette forme opaque n’i’n avec celle des systèmes pronominaux. We analyse data from the PAM (Parlers des Alpes-Maritimes, Dalbera, 1994) notebooks, which transcribe oral interviews conducted between 1972 and 1981. We examine unstressed object pronouns from different survey points in order to identify morphological variations across this region, as well as distinct pronominal systems. We compare our data with those from earlier studies, in particular the results from Dalbera (1985–1986, 1994) and from Sumien (2006). We also observe a distinct (non syncretic) form for the third person dative plural pronoun, lor, only used by speakers in just one of the points for which we have data, as well as an opaque form n’i’n, which represents the fusion of the dative pronoun with the genitive, in the western part of the Alpes-Maritimes department. We compare the geographic distribution of this opaque form n’i’n with those of other pronominal systems.

Abstract

After decades with access to only one volume of the Atlas Lingüístico de la Península Ibérica (ALPI), the scholarly community took a few years to get used to the possibility of accessing much more of data from the most complete survey of Iberian Romance dialects. The legacy of Navarro Tomás and his team of fieldworkers, initially made available through a limited web interface, nonetheless allowed for the use original fieldwork transcriptions to produce research in areas of dialect morphosyntax, lexical variables and real-time historical linguistics, be it on the local, regional or national level or on a peninsular scale. After a few years of increasing use of the data, and renewed interest in the atlas, the CSIC fund a new collaborative project to develop and publish the ALPI materials., Tras décadas con acceso a sólo un tomo del Atlas Lingüístico de la Península Ibérica (ALPI), la comunidad científica tardó algunos años en acostumbrarse a la posibilidad de acceder a un mayor número de datos de la encuesta más completa que existe sobre los dialectos ibero-romances. El legado de Navarro Tomás y su equipo de encuestadores, inicialmente accesible mediante una interfaz limitada, posibilitaba sin embargo el uso de las transcripciones originales de las encuestas para producir investigación sobre la morfosintaxis dialectal, las variables léxicas y la lingüística histórica en tiempo real, tanto a nivel local y regional como a escala peninsular. Después de algunos años de un uso cada vez mayor de los datos, y de un interés renovado por el atlas, el CSIC decidió financiar un nuevo proyecto en colaboración para elaborar y editar el ALPI.

42. Morphosyntactic theory needs iberian linguistic geography (and vice-versa)

Abstract

Spanish clitic sequences, long thought to be strictly ordered, turn out to show variation in the order of first and second person pronouns with the reflexive clitic se. This variation shows up in dialect data spanning the 20th century, from the Atlas lingüístico de la Península Ibérica (www.alpi.ca) and other linguistic atlas surveys as well as semi-directed interviews with older rural speakers from the Corpus oral y sonoro del español rural. The analysis of nonstandard clitic sequences reveals an implicational asymmetry, whereby nonstandard orders with first person singular me imply those with second person te but nonstandard sequences with te can occur alone, without those involving me. Such a person asymmetry in turn suggests that accounts of clitic ordering, whether they rely on templates, syntactic movement or ALIGN constraints, must pay attention to the internal morphological structure of pronominal paradigms — something we only notice if morphosyntactic analyses and geolinguistics mutually inform one another.

Abstract

Faetar is an under-documented variety descended from Francoprovençal and spoken in two isolated Apulian villages in southern Italy as well as in the emigrant diaspora, especially in the Greater Toronto Area. Speakers use two series of subject pronouns (strong and weak pronouns), producing sentences with zero, one or two overt subject pronouns. The status of the overt forms as subject pronouns, emphatic pronouns, left- or right-dislocated pronouns, clitics, or affixes is not clear. Contrary to the predictions of the Null Subject Parameter hypothesis (Perlmutter 1971, Deep and surface structure constraints in syntax. New York: Holt, Rhinehart and Winston; Chomsky 1981, Lectures on government and binding. Dordrecht: Foris), these grammars have subject pronoun paradigms that are variable and conditioned by a number of linguistic factors (including person, tense, information status and subject type). This article delineates which aspects vary diachronically, spatially, or between individuals -- a necessary prerequisite to constructing a theoretical model that accounts for this variation. By comparing the patterns of use in France, Italy, and Toronto, and using sources that span nearly a century, we see that despite the very small size of its speech community, Faetar shows little sign of accommodating to English's virtually categorical presence of subject pronouns, nor to Italian's high null subject (hereafter Ø-subject) rate, nor to the conditioning effects found in those languages.
