Abstract

Phytochemical investigation on the bark of E. kingiana plant afforded ten compounds, including six polyketides namely kingianin A 1, kingianin B 2, kingianin E 3, kingianin F 4, kingianin K 5 and kingianin L 6, three endiandric acids; kingianic acid A 7, tsangibeilin B 8 and endiandric acid M 9, and one sesquiterpene; daibuoxide 10. All compounds were separated as racemic mixture by recycling high-performance liquid chromatography (RHPLC), except for daibuoxide. Their structures were elucidated by detailed spectroscopic and comparative literature data analysis. This is the first report on the presence of the sesquiterpene; daibuoxide in Endiandra genus. In vitro enzymatic bio-evaluation of the isolated compounds against α-amylase and α-glucosidase showed that 4 demonstrated the best α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity with IC50 values of 181.54 ± 6.27 µg/mL and 237.87 ± 0.07 µg/mL, respectively. Abstract

Bukit Maras, one of the recreational areas in Terengganu enJoys a steady influx of hikers and recreational visitors yearly with an adequate development in terms of facility. Nevertheless, there is no clear indicator to measure the sustainab ility of ecotourism on the economic improvement of the locals. Thus, this study was conducted to assess the impact of tourist, specifically on one of the primary beneficiary of tourism activity which are the local vendors. Questionnaire was developed for two categories of respondents, the visitors and local vendors regarding several elements of Bukit Maras tourism as well as visitors spending habits and vendor's income. The data obtained were then analysed using the proximity matrix analysis and visualised as heat map. A very positive response regarding tourism of Bukit Maras were recorded for both visitors and vendors. However, most visitors (79%) spend less than RM50 on site. Additionally, several elements evaluated by the visitors such as the facilities, environment and vendors' behavior have been ide ntified to have a positive correlation with an improvement in the vendor's income. This indicates that although positive ratings ha ve been given by the visitors on Bukit Maras, it does not affect both the expenditure of visitors and income of the vendors. Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa) is a primary source of food for more than half of the world's population. Despite its importance, rice production struggles with various pathogenic attacks particularly by Xanthomonas oryzae that causes bacterial blight. Overcoming this issues is of utmost priority especially when the use of drought-tolerant varieties to secure production in erratic climate is on the rise. Thus it is important to comprehend the pathogenicity of this proteobacteria towards rice. Consequently this study was conducted to determine the pathology of X. oryzae infection on drought tolerance rice variety namely MR219-4 grown under normal conditions. 16-days old seedlings were infected with the pathogen and subsequently the morphological traits, total oil content and the variance between total oil, biomass (except for day 20) and dry weight of the infected and non infected plants were assessed in three developmental phases; seedlings, vegetative and reproductive. The results showed that plant height, root length, biomass and total oil content did not significantly differ between the infected and the control plants. However, variance analysis shows that bacterial infection caused a deterministic toward stochastic response in total oil/biomass variance over growth stages. Thus indicating that the population dynamic of MR219-4 defence mechanism to the infection is deterministic during the seedling stages and becoming stochastic during the vegetative phase paddy. Abstract

Mapping and illustration of biochemical interaction pathways have been used by the molecular biologist for decades to describe cellular processes. The effort in mapping these molecular interactions comes in myriad of forms, lacks standardisation and most of the annotated maps are not computer readable. Recent years, efforts have been made in standardising mapping processes and also to be computer readable. This include standardise notation and development of standard language that are readable across platforms. We assessed variability of the published sugar metabolic map available in Recon2, KEGG, HumanCyc and EcoCyc. Sets of molecular interaction and maps of metabolic pathways were extracted from these databases and revisualised using System Biology Graphical Notation (SBGN) in VANTED. Variabilities were assessed based on differences in the annotation, nodes (components) and edges (reactions). Our study identifies two key issues, the variability in the data visualisation and variability in the number of registered nodes and edges across databases for human and E. coli metabolic pathways. Variation in the visualisation rooted from differences in the curated nodes and edges and also may due to each database has taken different approaches and philosophies in establishing the molecular interaction thus affecting the detail in molecular interaction.
