Abstract Background How does the brain repair obliterated speech and cope with acoustically ambivalent situations? A widely discussed possibility is to use top-down information for solving the ambiguity problem. In the case of speech, this may lead to a match of bottom-up sensory input with lexical expectations resulting in resonant states which are reflected in the induced gamma-band activity (GBA). Methods In the present EEG study, we compared the subject's pre-attentive GBA responses to obliterated speech segments presented after a series of correct words. The words were a minimal pair in German and differed with respect to the degree of specificity of segmental phonological information. Results The induced GBA was larger when the expected lexical information was phonologically fully specified compared to the underspecified condition. Thus, the degree of specificity of phonological information in the mental lexicon correlates with the intensity of the matching process of bottom-up sensory input with lexical information. Conclusions These results together with those of a behavioural control experiment support the notion of multi-level mechanisms involved in the repair of deficient speech. The delineated alignment of pre-existing knowledge with sensory input is in accordance with recent ideas about the role of internal forward models in speech perception.

Gait is an indicator of a person's health status and abnormal gait patterns are associated with a higher risk of falls, dementia, and mental health disorders. Wearable sensors facilitate long-term assessment of walking in the user's home environment. Earables, wearable sensors that are worn at the ear, are gaining popularity for digital health assessments because they are unobtrusive and can easily be integrated into the user's daily routine, for example, in hearing aids. A comprehensive gait analysis pipeline for an ear-worn accelerometer that includes spatial-temporal parameters is currently not existing. Therefore, we propose and compare three algorithmic approaches to estimate step length and gait speed based on ear-worn accelerometer data: a biomechanical model, feature-based machine learning (ML) models, and a convolutional neural network. We evaluated their performance on a step and walking bout level and compared it with an optical motion capture system. The feature-based ML model achieved the best performance with a precision of 4.8cm on a walking bout level. For gait speed, the machine learning approach achieved an absolute percentage error of 5.4 % ( ± 4.0 %). We find that the ML model is able to estimate step length and gait speed with clinically relevant precision. Furthermore, the model is insensitive to different age groups and sampling rates but sensitive to walking speed. To our knowledge, this work is the first contribution to estimating step length and gait speed using ear-worn accelerometers. Moreover, it lays the foundation for a comprehensive gait analysis framework for ear-worn sensors enabling continuous and long-term monitoring at home.

The vestigial pinna-orienting system in humans is capable of increasing the activity of several auricular muscles in response to lateralized transient auditory stimuli. For example, transient increases in electromyographic activity in the posterior auricular muscle (PAM) to an attention-capturing stimulus have been documented. For the current study, surface electromyograms (EMGs) were recorded from the PAMs and superior auricular muscles (SAMs) of 10 normal-hearing participants. During the experiments, lateralized transient auditory stimuli, such as a crying baby, a shattering vase, or the participant's first names, were presented. These transient stimuli were either presented in silence or when participants actively listened to a podcast. Although ipsilateral PAM activity increased in response to transient stimuli, the SAM displayed the opposite behavior, i.e., a brief, ipsilateral suppression of activity. This suppression of ipsilateral SAM activity was more frequent on the right (75%) than left side (35%), whereas an ipsilateral PAM increase was roughly equal in prevalence on the two sides (left: 90%, right: 95%). During the active listening task, SAM suppression on the right ear was significantly larger in response to ipsilateral stimuli, compared with contralateral ones ( P = 0.002), whereas PAM activity increased significantly ( P = 0.002). Overall, this study provides evidence of a systematic transient suppression of the SAM during exogenous attention. This could suggest a more complex system than previously assumed, as the presence of synchronized excitatory and inhibitory components in different auricular muscles points toward a coordinated attempt at reflexively orienting the pinna toward a sound. NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study provides evidence that two auricular muscles in humans, the posterior and superior auricular muscles (PAM, SAM), react fundamentally different to lateralized transient auditory stimuli, especially during active listening. Although the PAM reacts with a transient increase in ipsilateral activity, ongoing ipsilateral SAM activity is briefly suppressed at the same time. This indicates the presence of a more complex and nuanced pinna-orienting system, with synchronized excitatory and inhibitory components in humans, than previously suspected.

The most prominent acoustic features in speech are intensity modulations, represented by the amplitude envelope of speech. Synchronization of neural activity with these modulations supports speech comprehension. As the acoustic modulation of speech is related to the production of syllables, investigations of neural speech tracking commonly do not distinguish between lower-level acoustic (envelope modulation) and higher-level linguistic (syllable rate) information. Here we manipulated speech intelligibility using noise-vocoded speech and investigated the spectral dynamics of neural speech processing, across two studies at cortical and subcortical levels of the auditory hierarchy, using magnetoencephalography. Overall, cortical regions mostly track the syllable rate, whereas subcortical regions track the acoustic envelope. Furthermore, with less intelligible speech, tracking of the modulation rate becomes more dominant. Our study highlights the importance of distinguishing between envelope modulation and syllable rate and provides novel possibilities to better understand differences between auditory processing and speech/language processing disorders., (© 2023 The Authors.
