1. Differences in Tenure Status and Feelings of Fairness in Hiring and Promotions among Male and Female Faculty in Canadian Universities. Insights on Canadian Society. Catalogue No. 75-006-X

Abstract

This study uses 2019 data from the University and College Academic Staff System to examine gender differences in tenure status among faculty in Canadian universities. It also uses the Survey of Postsecondary Faculty and Researchers to examine feelings of fairness in hiring and promotions. (1) In 2019, almost 6 in 10 full-time university faculty members in Canada were men. Male university faculty are older and more likely to be full professors than women; (2) Female faculty are less likely to be in tenured positions than male faculty. In 2019, less than two thirds (63%) of female faculty held such positions, compared with three quarters (75%) of their male counterparts; (3) Once multiple factors associated with tenure were considered (including time since completion of the highest degree and the highest level of education), the gender gap in tenure was reduced. However, women remained less likely to be in tenured positions than men (68% versus 71%); (4) Female faculty were less likely to feel that hiring was fair and equitable at their institution. Specifically, around 20% of women surveyed disagreed or strongly disagreed that hiring was fair and equitable at their institution, compared with 12% of men; (5) Women (23%) were also more likely than men (14%) to state that they disagreed or strongly disagreed that promotions were fair and equitable at their institution; and (6) Other groups that were less likely to feel that hiring was fair and equitable included faculty belonging to racialized groups, faculty members with a disability and sexual minority female faculty. In addition, faculty members with a disability and women who belong to racialized groups were less likely to feel promotions were fair and equitable. 2. Does Reading Proficiency at Age 15 Affect Employment Earnings in Young Adulthood? Insights on Canadian Society

Abstract

Previous research has suggested that skills acquired at a young age, such as reading or math skills, may have an impact on the early labour market outcomes of individuals. In this study, tax data linked to the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS) and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) are used to examine the association between background factors at age 15 (including reading proficiency) and employment earnings in young adulthood for a cohort of respondents who were aged 15 in 2000. Findings in the report include: (1) In 2000, 51% of women and 38% of men aged 15 had a high level of reading skills. Having a higher skill level is defined as obtaining a Level 4 or higher (out of 5) in reading tests administered through PISA; (2) Young women and men with higher reading proficiency at age 15 earned more than their counterparts with lower reading proficiency, both in the first year after leaving school and in the ensuing years. These results, however, do not take into account the other factors that also affect earnings. (3) After accounting for various individual and background factors (e.g., parental education, parental income, overall marks at age 15 and other characteristics such as highest level of education and field of study), reading proficiency at age 15 was no longer associated with employment earnings after leaving school--for both men and women--even in the first year after leaving school; and (5) For women, reading proficiency acts on career employment earnings primarily through education. This means that women with higher reading proficiency acquire more educational credentials, which--in turn--has an impact on earnings. For men, other background characteristics, such as parental income and marks at age 15, had more of an impact on employment earnings than reading skills

3. Roots and STEMS? Examining Field of Study Choices among Northern and Rural Youth in Canada

Abstract

Despite several decades of postsecondary expansion, new research finds youth from northern and rural areas in Canada still experience difficulties making the transition to postsecondary education, and those who do attend take longer to do so. Proximity, we argue, may also have a considerable impact on one's field selection, as many of Canada's larger universities and colleges, who offer considerably more program and degree options, tend to be concentrated in large, urban centers, and in the southern regions of Canada's provinces. This study draws on Cycles 1-4 of Statistics Canada's Youth in Transition Survey -- Cohort A to examine regional inequalities in accessing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-related fields at both the university and non-university levels. Indeed, our findings suggest that location of residence does impact field choices, as students from northern and rural areas were less likely to enter STEM as well as non-STEM, university programs.

4. Overqualification, Skills and Job Satisfaction. Insights on Canadian Society

Abstract

Based on a self-reported measure of overqualification, this article examines the association between overqualification and skills among workers aged 25 to 64 with a university degree, using data from the 2012 Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). This article also examines the extent to which overqualified workers are dissatisfied with their jobs. Overqualified workers are defined in this study as university-educated workers who reported that they were in a job requiring no more than a high school education. Some highlights of findings from the study include: (1) In 2012, about 12% of workers aged 25 to 64 with a university degree reported that they were working in a job that did not require more than a high school education (i.e., they were "overqualified"). Another 19% said that their job required a college education, while 69% said that their job required a university education; (2) Among overqualified university graduates aged 25 to 64, 47% had lower literacy skills and 54% had lower numeracy skills; (3) The factors associated with overqualification are not necessarily the same for lower-skilled and higherskilled university graduates; (4) Overqualified university graduates use fewer skills in the workplace; and (5) After accounting for other factors that are related to job satisfaction, about 13% of overqualified university graduates were not satisfied with their job in 2012. This compared with 3% for those who were in a university-level position.

5. Literacy and Numeracy among Off-Reserve First Nations People and Métis: Do Higher Skill Levels Improve Labour Market Outcomes? Insights on Canadian Society

Abstract

Existing research shows that higher cognitive skills, such as literacy and numeracy, are associated with greater labour force participation and higher earnings, as well as a positive relationship with self-reported health status. However, this research has not focused specifically on the Aboriginal population in Canada. This article examines the literacy and numeracy skills of off-reserve First Nations and Métis adults, focusing on the factors and labour market outcomes associated with higher skill levels. In this study, individuals in the higher range for literacy and numeracy are defined as those who scored level 3 or higher (out of 5 levels) in tests administered by the 2012 Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). This article begins by providing a profile of the skills of First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and the non-Aboriginal adult population aged 25 to 65. The second part of this article examines the factors associated with higher literacy and numeracy skill levels for off-reserve First Nations people and Métis as well as the non-Aboriginal population. The final section focuses on employment outcomes and how they relate to higher skill levels within the core working-age group of adults aged 25 to 54. Data for this article are from the 2012 Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), a large survey on the information-processing skills of youth and adults aged 16 to 65 in every province and territory in Canada and 23 other countries.

6. Differences in the Location of Study of University-Educated Immigrants. Insights on Canadian Society

Abstract

This article examines the differences in the location of study of immigrant adults aged 25 to 64 with a university education (i.e., with at least a bachelor's degree). It provides results by period of immigration (pre-1990, the 1990s, and the 2000s) and provides a more in-depth analysis of factors that are linked to the location of study for the most recent cohort of immigrants (i.e., those who immigrated in 2000 or later). Findings include: (1) In 2011, 75% of university-educated immigrants received their highest degree outside the country, while 25% obtained their highest degree in Canada. Of the 75% with a foreign degree, 64% obtained it from their birth country and 11% obtained it from a third country (i.e., neither their country of birth nor Canada). (2) Of the 1.3 million university-educated immigrants aged 25 to 64, close to 750,000 entered the country in 2000 or later. Among these 'recent immigrants', 83% obtained their highest degree outside Canada, and 17% obtained their highest degree in Canada. (3) Of the top-12 source countries for recent immigrants with a university education, those from the Philippines were the most likely to have studied in their birth country (at 95%). Conversely, immigrants from China and Iran were the least likely to have obtained their highest degree in their birth country (at 68%). (4) Of the top-12 source countries for recent immigrants with a university education, those who were from France (23%) and Algeria (13%) were the most likely to have received their highest degree in Quebec, illustrating the close ties between language and location of study. (5) Differences in the location of study between source countries remained for recent immigrants even after taking other background factors into account, including mother tongue, gender, field of study and type of degree. Because immigrants represent a growing portion of Canada's labour force, it is important to understand the issues related to the successful integration of immigrants into the labour market.

Abstract

A growing body of research studies youth not actively involved in education, employment, or training (NEET). Some recent estimates of NEET place Canadian youth at slightly below the OECD average. At the same time, however, researchers have identified a number of regional barriers that present unique challenges to labour market participation for Canadians residing in northern and rural areas. In this article, we investigate the extent to which regional differences contribute to the labour market inactivity of Canadian youth. Using multiple waves of Statistics Canada's Youth in Transition Survey (YITS-A), we find that indeed NEET rates differ for youth who reside in northern and southern Canada. Northern, rural youth show significantly higher probabilities of being NEET between ages 20 and 22. Moreover, these regional differences in NEET status continue to have a strong and independent effect, even when accounting for socio-demographic characteristics, parental socio-economic factors, educational experiences, and family structure. 8. The Impact of Marital Conflict and Disruption on Children's Health

Abstract

This article investigates the effect of inconsistency between parental marital conflict and disruption on children's health. Inconsistent situations arise when minimal marital conflict precedes disruption or when marital conflict is high but there is no disruption. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, two alternative hypotheses, the stress vulnerable hypothesis and the stress resistant hypothesis, are tested. The latter hypothesis is based on recent evidence in the medical field. The results support the stress resistant hypothesis in that boys' health is enhanced when there is inconsistency between marital conflict and disruption. There are no significant effects for girls. The widespread notion that marital conflict and disruption have only adverse effects for children is challenged by the findings in this study. (Contains 2 figures, 4 notes and 3 tables.)

9. Marital Disruption and Accidents/Injuries Among Children

Abstract

A vast literature has examined the effects of marital disruption on child well-being, however medically attended childhood accidents/injuries have not been considered as an outcome. This article investigates this association as well as possible intervening pathways using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-linked mother-child file. Findings reveal that marital disruption decreases girls' accidents/injuries. Boys are not directly affected. Parenting practices, childhood aggression, and precipitous drops in household income appear to do little to the relationship between marital disruption and childhood accidents/injuries for boys. For girls, however, the potential benefits of a marital disruption are suppressed until considering mothers use of discipline and household income decline. Results are discussed in terms of stress theory and the effect of mother-daughter versus mother-son dynamics following marital disruption.

14. The long-term effect of childhood residential mobility on educational attainment

Abstract

Moving during childhood has typically been found to have negative effects on educational attainment. The loss of important social relationships is likely the cause. Many studies that examine the effect of residential mobility on education take a relatively short-term view by only looking at the effect for those no older than their late teens or early 20s. However, because many family moves are beneficial to children, in terms of improving their neighborhood or home environment, it is possible that the positive effects of family mobility do not appear until much later. I examine the effect of childhood residential mobility on educational attainment using the 1986 Canadian General Social Survey for individuals aged 25 and over. Results suggest that over the long run, residential mobility in childhood is beneficial for later educational attainment in that those who move between birth and age 15 are more likely to eventually graduate from high school than those who remain in the same community.

Abstract

A new body of sociological research is finding that northern and rural youth, and in particular, low‐SES youth, face difficulties accessing higher levels of postsecondary education and lucrative fields of study such as the STEMs. However, existing research has yet to systematically measure the skills proficiencies of youth in these regions nor have we understood the factors which might account for regional differences. We draw on multiple cycles of Statistics Canada's Youth in Transition Survey, Cohort A linked to the Programme for International Student Assessment scores to investigate how location of residence impacts skills proficiencies at age 15 in math, science, and reading outcomes. Overall, our results point to three key findings. First, southern youth outperform northern youth in mathematics skills. Second, we uncover a southern (both urban and rural) and northern urban advantage in reading proficiencies. Third, in science literacy, southern and northern urban youth experience significant advantages over youth from northern rural locations. While some of the skills differences are attributable to parenting styles, parental socioeconomic status, student academics, and province of residence, they are not completely attenuated by these factors. We use the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS) to examine the link betweeneducation and early parenthood in Canada. Estimates from proportional hazardmodels reveal that the exit from fulltime schooling increases the risk ofbecoming a young parent. However, this risk is tempered by the level ofeducation achieved. Other measures related to education indicate that skippingclasses increases the risk of early parenthood for men and women, whereashaving peers committed to education reduces the risk for both. 19. Proximity, Prosperity, and Participation: Examining Access to Postsecondary Education among Youth in Canada's Provincial North.

Abstract

Despite increased proportions of students attending some form of postsecondary education (PSE), some social groups continue to face significant barriers and encounter difficulties making the transition. Previous research suggests that proximity to postsecondary institutions may have a positive impact on PSE participation rates, even more so for lower- and middle-income families. We know comparatively less, however, about how these processes operate for social groups in varied social and economic contexts. In Canada, many highly ranked, prestigious universities and colleges (with greater arrays of fields) tend to be clustered in large, urban centers, and in the southernmost parts of Canadian provinces, but it is not clear whether these differences impact PSE outcomes. Drawing on cycles 1 to 4 of Statistics Canada's Youth in Transition Survey (YITS --Cohort A), our findings reveal that individuals from the northernmost parts of Canadian provinces do experience difficulties accessing various types of PSE (and in the timing of doing so). Moreover, our results suggest that much of these location effects are attributable to not only economic differences in terms of parental income but also cultural and dispositional differences related to parental education and their aspirations for their children's education. Abstract

Parental involvement in their children’s lives can have a lasting impact on well-being. More involved parents convey to their children that they are interested in their development, and this in turn signals to the child that their future is valued. However, what happens in socio-economically disadvantaged homes? Can the social capital produced by greater parental involvement counteract some of the harmful effects of less financial capital? These questions are examined on the National Child Development Study; a longitudinal study of children born in Britain in 1958. Results on a sample of children raised in two parent families suggest that parental involvement does matter, but that it depends on when it and poverty are measured, as well as the type of involvement and the gender of the parent. Father interest in education has the strongest impact on earlier poverty, especially at age 11. Meanwhile, both father and mother interest in school at age 16 have the largest direct impact on education. The frequency of outings with mother at age 11 also has a larger direct impact on education than outings with father, however, neither compare with the reduction in the poverty effect as a result of father interest in school.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of mothers' distress on the emotional and behavioral adjustment of their children from childhood to adulthood. Data were obtained from the British Cohort Study, a longitudinal study of children born in a one-week period in 1970. Children were followed up multiple times from birth through to age 30. Results indicate that, overall, mothers' distress is associated with their children's behavioral maladjustment in childhood and adolescence, and with general distress in adulthood. However, more recent distress in mothers appears to have a greater influence on the well-being of their children than more distant distress. Additionally, behavioral maladjustment in adolescence appears to have a stronger effect on distress in adulthood than a history of mothers' distress. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. Parental investment in childhood and later adult well-being: can more involved parents offset the effects of socioeconomic disadvantage?

Abstract

Parental involvement in their children’s lives can have a lasting impact on well-being. More involved parents convey to their children that they are interested in their development, and this in turn signals to the child that their future is valued. However, what happens in socio-economically disadvantaged homes? Can the social capital produced by greater parental involvement counteract some of the harmful effects of less financial capital? These questions are examined on the National Child Development Study; a longitudinal study of children born in Britain in 1958. Results on a sample of children raised in two parent families suggest that parental involvement does matter, but that it depends on when it and poverty are measured, as well as the type of involvement and the gender of the parent. Father interest in education has the strongest impact on earlier poverty, especially at age 11. Meanwhile, both father and mother interest in school at age 16 have the largest direct impact on education. The frequency of outings with mother at age 11 also has a larger direct impact on education than outings with father, however, neither compare with the reduction in the poverty effect as a result of father interest in school.

Abstract

The goal of this work is to examine how child and adolescent well-being are influenced by family mobility and neighborhood quality. Both of these factors have been shown to influence the overall well-being of youth, by altering successful behavioral development. Moving and high poverty neighborhoods often increase behavior problems. The connection between these two processes has not been looked at previously, except among families participating in very selective residential mobility programs (e.g. Gautreaux and Moving to Opportunity). I address several questions. Does child behavior change as a result of family mobility? Does neighborhood context pre- and post-move have any bearing on the change? Finally, does mobility have different effects on behavior depending upon when they are measured? That is, do the effects surface immediately after the move, or is there a lagged effect, with change not being seen for several years? I overcome limitations from past research by combining a nationally representative sample of children from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth’s linked mother-child files with the 1990 US census. Together these data allow for the measurement of child behavior and neighborhood poverty both before and after the move. I find that moving, when measured without taking neighborhood context into account, has no effect on the negative behavior of children and adolescents. However, once neighborhood context is considered, the effect of mobility on child behavior changes. Several important effects are noted, which vary by the class context of the origin and destination neighborhoods. First, moving from a poor to a nonpoor neighborhood reduces negative behavior. Second, this positive impact diminishes four years after the move. Third, moving to a higher poverty neighborhood, or to another poor neighborhood, increases a child’s negative behavior. Fourth, these harmful effects do not manifest until four years post-move. Finally, moving between two nonpoor neighborhoods has no effect on child behavior. These results suggest that it is important to include contextual factors of the origin and destination neighborhood when studying the effect of residential mobility on children. Also, it is beneficial to measure behavior change immediately, as well as several years after a family moves.
