Pedaling is a physical exercise practiced with either the upper or the lower limbs. Muscle coordination during these exercises has been previously studied using electromyography and synergy analysis, and three to four synergies have been identified for the lower and upper limbs. The question of synergy adaptabilities has not been investigated during pedaling with the upper limbs, and the impact of various modalities is yet not known. This study investigates the effect of pedal type (either clipped/gripped or flat) on the torque performance and the synergy in both upper and lower limbs. Torques applied by six participants while pedaling at 30% of their maximal power have been recorded for both upper and lower limbs. Electromyographic data of 11 muscles on the upper limbs and 11 muscles on the lower limbs have been recorded and synergies extracted and compared between pedal types. Results showed that the torques were not modified by the pedal types for the lower limbs while a deep adaptation is observable for the upper limbs. Participants indeed used the additional holding possibility by pulling the pedals on top of the pushing action. Synergies were accordingly modified for upper limbs while they remain stable for the lower limbs. In both limbs, the synergies showed a good reproducibility even if larger variabilities were observed for the upper limbs. This pilot study highlights the adaptability of muscle synergies according to the condition of movement execution, especially observed for the upper limbs, and can bring some new insights for the rehabilitation exercises. Purpose: Physical load during military training might increase the need for vitamin D; therefore, supplementation could be beneficial for 25(OH)D serum levels and physical performance. Methods: One hundred and twelve male conscripts were randomized into two vitamin D oil capsule supplementation groups: 55 participants in the 600 IU group and 57 in the 4000 IU group with a follow‐up period from July 2021 to May 2022. Physical fitness tests were performed in July, October and May. Hand grip strength tests were performed in July, October and January. Blood serum (25(OH)D), parathyroid hormone PTH), calcium and ionized calcium (i‐Ca) values were measured in July, October, January and May. Results: The 600 IU group had a lower (p < 0.001) value of 25(OH)D at all time points compared to the 4000 IU group, except at baseline. None of the subjects in the 600 IU group reached sufficient levels of 75 nmol/L of 25(OH)D in January and May. In May, 60% of participants in the 600 IU group and 30% in the 4000 IU group had 25(OH)D levels under 50 nmol/L. No significant differences in PTH or i‐Ca values were found between the study groups at any time point. No significant differences at any time point were found in the physical fitness test or hand grip strength test between the groups. Conclusion: A 10‐month vitamin D supplementation with 4000 IU decreased the incidence of vitamin D deficiency (<75 nmol/L) in young, male army conscripts during wintertime, but no differences in physical performance were found compared to 600 IU supplementation. Purpose: This research sought to assess and contrast the physical attributes of adolescent wrestlers and judo practitioners aged 13 to 16, aiming to identify key physical and motor skills that contribute to performance excellence in these sports. Method: A total of 30 athletes were randomly assigned to the wrestling (n=15) and judo (n=15) groups. These athletes train 4 to 6 days a week. In this study, body composition, horizontal jump test, hand grip strength, flamingo balance test, sit and reach test and shuttle run of combat athletes were evaluated. Statistical analysis was conducted utilizing the SPSS 20.0 program. Findings: Based on the results, the average age of the participants was calculated to be (13.7±1.2) for judo and (14.8±1.7) for wrestling, with their respective sports ages being (5.3±1.3) for judo and (5.6±1.2) for wrestling, and their heights being (161.1±10.7) for judo and (169.4±9.4) for wrestling. Although a significant difference was noted in the lean body mass percentage, the results of the horizontal jump, hand grip strength tests, sit and reach test, flamingo balance test and shuttle run showed no significant variance. Conclusion: The lack of a significant difference in the outcomes observed between judo participants and wrestlers in this age category can be attributed to the similarity of these sports disciplines. The follow-up of the process will provide detailed information about the physical characteristics and performances of combative athletes and will provide scientific contribution to the training and development processes of athletes in this age group. Objectives Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is common among office workers and limits functional hand ability and the ability to work. Carpal tunnel syndrome prevention programs implementation are still insufficient among office workers. In view of the fact that physical activity is the best method of preventing musculoskeletal complaints the aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of prevention exercises protocol for hand and wrist pain among office workers. Material and Methods Study group consists form 62 office workers, reporting complaints of hand and wrist pain. Exercise group it was 49 subjects who performed the exercise protocol and the non-exercise group consisted of 13 subjects. An exercises program, consisting of 7 exercises. The program was planned for daily routine during 8 weeks. The effectiveness of the exercise program was assessed by physical parameters (hand grip and pinch grip strength, force of forearm muscles) and questionnaires ( Visual Analog Scale pain scale, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptom Severity Scale , and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Functional Status Scale functional hand assessment questionnaires) were performed. Assessment was performed before and after the intervention. Results Statistical analysis of the data showed significant changes in the value of measured hand grip of the right hand (Z = –2.85, p < 0.01). For pinch grip, changes were significant for both the right (Z = –2.12, p < 0.05) and the left hands (Z = –2.35, p < 0.05). Functional performance improved significantly in bought groups. There was no statistically significant change in the intensity of experienced pain. Conclusions The results of the study indicate that performing a preventive exercise program regularly has an effect on increasing forearm muscle strength in a group of office workers. Office workers with symptoms of CTS who exercised regularly had higher results in hand grip and pincer grip strength. Background Hand grip strength is an integral part of performing precise and refined fine motor activities. In the physical assessment of various diseases affecting musculoskeletal neuromuscular and cardio respiratory systems in children, elderly and obese populations, HGS measurement is also used as a commonest part of the assessment. Obesity has become a major health problem in today's world. The relationship of the anthropometric parameters like height, weight, BMI with Hand grip strength and endurance among the healthy young adults has not been properly explored to determine the influence of the former on the later. Materials and Methods: This Study included 90 Subject, 45 boys and 45 girls all were aged between 18-21 years. The only healthy students were included in study. The students who were on medication or suffering from any ill-health were excluded from study. The students especially upper limb fractured or with limb deformity were excluded and the student with disorders like cardiovascular and respiratory were excluded. The subjects who are below 30 BMI were selected for study. The height and weight were measured, BMI was calculated by using Quetlet's index. In present study we have used a handgrip dynamometer to measure the handgrip strength and endurance of the dominant hand. Dynamometer was used to measure for same parameters. All the data were recorded and expressed in Mean +SD, SPSS software was used to analyses data. Results: In present study we have calculated the BMI after measuring weight and height of subjects. The P-value in both male and female, between underweight, normal weight and overweight was <0.001. In case of Handgrip Strength (Kg) in present the P-value in both male and female, between all three groups was >0.05. In case of Handgrip endurance (Sec) in present study the P-value in both male and female, between all three groups was <0.001(Table1). Conclusion: The present study findings shows parameters like BMI positively correlated with hand grip muscle strength and height positively correlated with muscle endurance. The present study parameters may be considered before measuring hand grip muscle strength and endurance. Fishermen are essential to marine life. The dimension mismatchs between a fisherman and their fishing equipment, especially the boat engine steering lever, is a concern. The disparity in hand and boat motor steering lever dimensions may put fishermen at risk of workrelated injuries and accidents. This research examined the correlation between fishermen's characteristics and grasping hand musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Fifty fishermen from Baron Beach, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, participated in this study. The independent variables were individual characteristics of fishermen, including internal factors (such as body mass index (BMI)) and external factors (such as work hours per day and work experience as a fisherman). Meanwhile, the dependent variable was MSDs in the form of hand discomfort experienced by fishermen during grasping activities, as measured by modified Indonesian translated Standardized Nordic Questionnaires (SNQ) and Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) instruments. Pearson correlation coefficient analysis was applied to analyze the relationship between individual fisherman characteristics and MSDs on the hands caused by grasping activity. Pearson correlation coefficient's analysis revealed a significant correlation between the duration of a day's labor and discomfort in the thumbs and wrists of fishermen. There are also significant correlations between work experience and thumb, palm, and wrist discomfort. The study also revealed no correlation between BMI factors and the hand and wrist discomfort experienced by fishermen. The findings of this study can be used as a basis for designing ergonomic interventions for hand grasp aides based on anthropometric data collected from fishermen. Background: Post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS) may affect a substantial proportion of patients who have had COVID-19. The rehabilitation program might improve the physical capacity, functioning of the cardiopulmonary system, and mental conditions of these patients. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of personalized rehabilitation in patients with PCS according to gender. Methods: Adults who underwent a 6-week personalized PCS rehabilitation program were enrolled in a prospective post-COVID-19 Rehabilitation (PCR-SIRIO 8) study. The initial visit and the final visit included the hand-grip strength test, the bioimpedance analysis of body composition, and the following scales: modified Borg's scale, Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS), Functioning in Chronic Illness Scale (FCIS), modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale, and tests: 30 s chair stand test (30 CST), Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), Short Physical Performance Battery test (SPPB)e. Results: A total of 90 patients (54% female) underwent the rehabilitation program. Rehabilitation was associated with an increase in skeletal muscle mass (24.11 kg vs. 24.37 kg, p = 0.001) and phase angle (4.89° vs. 5.01°, p = 0.001) and with a reduction in abdominal fat tissue volume (3.03 L vs. 2.85 L, p = 0.01), waist circumference (0.96 m vs. 0.95 m, p = 0.001), and hydration level (83.54% vs. 82.72%, p = 0.001). A decrease in fat tissue volume and an increase in skeletal muscle mass were observed only in females, while an increase in grip strength was noticed selectively in males. Patients' fatigue (modified Borg's scale, MFIS), physical capacity (30 CST, 6MWT), balance (SPPB), dyspnea (mMRC), and functioning (FICS) were significantly improved after the rehabilitation regardless of gender. Conclusions: Personalized rehabilitation improved the body composition, muscle strength, and functioning of patients diagnosed with PCS. Background: Malnutrition and poor functional reserves place patients at risk for negative surgical outcomes. In this prospective study we aimed to measure preoperative nutritional and sarcopenia risk and evaluate their impact on postoperative outcomes. Methods: Adults scheduled to undergo elective general and gastrointestinal surgery were screened for nutrition risk using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool screening tool. Sarcopenia risk was measured using the SARC‐F tool and hand‐grip strength. Patients were followed postoperatively. Incidence of complications, length of stay (LOS), readmission rates, and need for step‐down care were recorded. Results: One hundred and twenty‐two patients were included. Mean age was 53.8 years (standard deviation [SD] 16.44). Sixty‐six (54%) were scheduled for day‐case procedures, and 56 (46%) for nonday‐case procedures. About 18.9% (n = 23) were at nutritional risk preoperatively. Ten patients (8.2%) had probable sarcopenia based on SARC‐F, whereas seven (5.7%) had measurably reduced HG. Incidence of postoperative complications was 23.8% (n = 29). Nutrition risk was associated with the development of complications (p = 0.018). In the nonday‐case group, nutritional risk was associated with greater LOS (p = 0.013). Older age was associated with need for step‐down care (p = 0.002) as was SARC‐F (p = 0.003). Conclusions: Preoperative nutritional screening can predict postoperative complications and LOS, whereas sarcopenia screening is predictive of the need for step‐down care after discharge. Screening tools are quick and inexpensive and could provide valuable information to clinicians and allow patients the opportunity to enhance their physical preparedness for surgery thereby mitigating their risk for negative surgical outcomes. It has been suggested that grip strength can predict physical fitness in children and adults. The overall plan of this study will validate this conclusion. The study analysed the correlation between hand grip strength and sit-and-reach in 70 children aged 6-7 years with the aim of gaining insight into the correlation between grip strength and sit-and-reach. Descriptive statistics were used in the study to find out the mean scores and differences in these exercises. The correlation between hand grip strength and sit-and-reach flexibility was also explored using Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results showed the correlation coefficient between hand grip strength (mean±sd=5.46±3.75) and sit-and-reach flexibility (mean±sd=8.25±5.28) was 0.078, indicating a weak positive correlation (p 0.05). The results of the study suggest that grip strength is not a valid predictor of physical dexterity in seated forward bends in 6-7 years old children age group. As suggested in the previous studies, grip strength can predict physical fitness in children, such as a strong correlation between grip strength and physical flexibility, lung function, muscular endurance, and physical stability. However, from the results, grip strength is not a reliable predictor of physical flexibility. We need to further validate the predictive role of grip strength for other physical fitness indicators. This is a very important validation for us to develop children's physical fitness assessment programs more efficiently in the future.

Background: Children with Down syndrome (DS) frequently have concomitant clinical problems. There are no studies in the literature evaluating gross motor development and handgrip strength in the presence of congenital heart disease (CHD), which is one of the most common comorbidities in population with DS. The aim of this study was to compare cardiopulmonary parameters, gross motor development and handgrip strength in children with DS with and without CHD. Methods: A total of 28 children with DS (14 with CHD and 14 without CHD) were evaluated. Demographic data and cardiopulmonary parameters were recorded. Gross motor development and handgrip strength were assessed. Results: Children with DS and CHD had lower GMFM‐88 scores and right handgrip strength and higher Wang respiratory score than children with DS and no CHD (P < 0.05). GMFM‐88 scores were moderately correlated with resting oxygen saturation (r = 0.46, P = 0.01) and right handgrip strength (r = 0.67, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Peripheral muscle strength and oxygen saturation may be factors affecting gross motor development in children with DS. From this point of view, evaluating cardiopulmonary parameters, motor development and handgrip strength in children with DS and CHD is important to identify risks, provide early intervention and support development. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional analytical study, after recording the demographic characteristics, the hand grip and pinch strength of 174 employees of 20 offices of Birjand city with at least 3 hours of daily computer work was measured using a Jamar hand dynamometer and Saehan pinch gauge. The data were analyzed by SPSS statistical software version 16. In addition to descriptive statistics, ANOVA, independent t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used. Results: The mean and standard deviation related to the age of the subjects were 37.5 ± 7.15 and 13 ± 7.35 years. AbstractThis study aims to determine the dimensions of the cup handle that are more comfortable for the user. The manufacture of cup handles generally does not involve dimensions with special standards but instead follows the shape of the cup itself. A unique design is not enough for a better user experience. Comfort must be considered using anthropometric dimensions and biomechanical strength. It is known the hand grip position has greater biomechanical strength than the lateral pinch grip position and can be used as a reference for determining the right dimensions for designing ergonomic cup handles. To achieve a hand grip position, it is necessary to change the shape of the cup handle with anthropometric measurements, it is known that the cup handle, which can fit the user’s four fingers, has a dimension of 73.70 mm. However, the characteristics of the clay will make the ceramic experience shrinkage in dimensions. A dimensional tolerance of 21% is given so that anthropometric measurements can be achieved so that the handle dimension that can be proposed is 89.17 mm. It is hoped that the dimensional changes in the cup handle will be a consideration for future studies and designs.

Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is one of the most common work-related complications characterized by pain, decreased grip strength and dysfunction of upper limb. Although conservative management such as physiotherapy and orthosis is reported as first line of treatment, sufficient evidence to decide their effectiveness is lacking and remains controversial. The current study evaluated and compared the efficacy of a custom-made extension wrist hand orthosis adjunct to usual physiotherapy and therapeutics alone for subjects with LE. Prospective randomized single-blinded clinical trial. 62 subjects with LE were selected as samples using convenience method in this experimental study. They were randomly divided into two groups: usual physiotherapy only and its combination with orthosis. Pain and grip strength were measured using Visual Analog Scale and Jamar hydraulic digital hand dynamometer. Muscle activity of extensor carpi radialis brevis during hand gripping was measured using surface electro-myographic by PowerLab electromyography (AD Instruments, Castle Hill, Australia). Data analysis and comparison were performed for baseline and post-intervention (12 weeks). After 12 weeks of treatment, there were significant differences in mean scores of pain (1.22 ± 0.51, p = 0.001), maximum voluntary grip strength (5.82 ± 7.84, p = 0.04), and extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle activation (0.082 ± 0.094, p = 0.02) between the therapeutics alone group and the therapeutics plus orthosis group. Compared to therapeutics alone, those getting a combination of physiotherapy and orthosis had greater treatment efficacy (p < 0.05). Both postintervention (12-week) treatments could affect pain scores, grip strength, and extensor muscle activation. Custom-made extension wrist hand orthosis adjunct to usual physiotherapy is more effective than therapeutics alone in subjects with LE. The proposed work deals with the production of a thumb prosthesis from ASA (Acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylic) material using FDM (Fused deposition modeling) additive manufacturing technology. The prosthesis serves as a substitute for the deformity of the hand (absence of the thumb including the metacarpal bone) and as a support point for grasping objects to restore the lost opposition function of the thumb. The shape of the thumb and the socket of the prosthesis are designed individually based on a 3D scan of the subject’s healthy hand. The design of the prosthesis was developed according to the anatomically correct condition and the user's requirements. The socket of the prosthesis sufficiently copies the relief of the subject's hand, which results in a sufficient attachment of the prosthesis to the hand segment and the comfort of the subject while wearing the prosthetic aid. Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome characterized by decreased physical performance, muscle mass, and strength. Since the intake of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) with iron can increase muscle mass and mitochondria in mice and elevate physical exercise performance in humans, the beneficial effects of ALA in patients with sarcopenia are expected, but this remains unexplored in the literature. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and dose dependency of ALA combined with iron in sarcopenia by measuring skeletal muscle mass index (SMI). Subjects with sarcopenia were enrolled and randomized into the ALA and sodium ferrous citrate (SFC) intake groups (ALA50/SFC29, ALA100/SFC29, ALA150/SFC29, ALA 100/SFC57, and ALA0/SFC29 placebo) and ingested the assigned study food for 12 weeks. The primary endpoint, the change in SMI from baseline to week 12, did not differ significantly between the groups. Hand grip significantly increased or tended to increase from baseline after 12 weeks with all doses of ALA or SFC compared with the placebo group. No consistent changes were observed in the other endpoints, including calf circumference, physical function, or quality of life (QOL). Although this study suggests safe administration and the possibility of ALA improving hand grip strength in patients with sarcopenia, further investigation is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pulmonary function can be impaired as a long-term consequence of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection on pulmonary function, exercise tolerance, and muscle strength in healthy middle-aged military outpatients according during the period of infection. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out from March 2020 to November 2022 at the Military Hospital "Celio" (Rome, Italy). If someone had a diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection certified by molecular nasal swab and if they performed pulmonary function tests, diffusion of carbon monoxide (DL'co), a six Minute Walk Test (6MWT), a Handgrip (HG) Test, and a One Minute Sit to Stand Test (1′STST). The included subjects were divided into two groups, A and B, according to the period of infection: A) from March 2020 to August 2021 and B) from September 2021 to October 2022. Results: One hundred fifty-three subjects were included in the study: 79 in Group A and 74 in Group B. Although the values were within the normal range, Group A had smaller FVC, FEV1, and DL'co compared to Group B. Group A also walked a shorter distance at the 6MWT and performed fewer repetitions in the 1′STS test compared to Group B. In both groups, the DL'co (%predicted) correlated with the 6MWT distance (R2 = 0.107, p < 0.001), the number of repetitions of the 1′STST (R2 = 0.086, p = 0.001), and the strength at the HG test (R2 = 0.08, p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study shows that the SARS-CoV-2 infection in healthy middle-aged military outpatients was more severe in the first waves than in the later ones and that, in healthy and physically fit individuals, even a marginal reduction in resting respiratory test values can have a major impact on exercise tolerance and muscles strength. Background CrossFit is characterized by a diverse range of exercises recruiting different muscles and requiring different muscle functions. A characterization of muscular performance parameters in this population is needed. Purpose To determine reference values for various aspects of muscular performance of muscles of the trunk, thigh, hip, and mass grasp in CrossFit participants. Also, this investigation aimed to compare the strength measures between male and female CrossFit participants, as well as between dominant and non-dominant limbs. Design Descriptive, Cross-sectional. Setting Laboratory. Methods Isometric strength of trunk extensors (TE) and mass grasp was measured with handheld and Jamar dynamometer respectively. An isokinetic dynamometer was used to assess the muscle performance of the knee flexors (KF) and extensors (KE) (at 60º/s and 300º/s), and hip flexors (HF), extensors (HE), and abductors (HA) (60º/s and 240º/s ). Reference values for torque, work, power, fatigue, flexor:extensor ratio for the knee (hamstring:quadriceps - H:Q) and hip (HF:HE) joints were calculated. The torque and work values were normalized by the body mass. Mixed multivariate and univariate analyses of variance and independent t-tests were used for statistical analyses to compare between sexes and limbs. Results Participants included 111 individuals (58 males and 53 females) with at least one year of experience in CrossFit. Normative data are provided for the outcome variables. Males had greater values of muscular performance parameters than females in most variables (p<0.05). Also, the dominant limb had greater mass grasp strength (p<0.002), greater KE power at 60º/s (p=0.015), lower H:Q ratio at 60º/s (p=0.021) and 300º/s (p=0.008), and lower KE fatigue (p=0.002). Conclusion This study provides reference values for the trunk extensors, mass grasp, knee, and hip muscle performance in male and female CrossFit practitioners. Their muscle performance profile was characterized by few inter-limb asymmetries, and males demonstrated greater muscular performance outcomes than females, even after normalization by body mass. Background There has been a growing interest in the role of vitamin D for the well-being and physical performance of humans under heavy training such as conscripts in military service; however, there is a lack of long-term supplementation studies performed on members of this type of young, physically active, male population. The hypothesis of the study was that vitamin D supplementation during wintertime will decrease the prevalence of critically low vitamin D blood serum levels and increase hand grip strength during the winter season among young male conscripts. Study Design Longitudinal, triple-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Methods Fifty-three male conscripts from the Estonian Army were randomized into two groups: 27 to an intervention group and 26 to a placebo group. The groups were comparable in terms of their demographics. The intervention group received 1200 IU (30 µg) capsules of vitamin D3, and the control group received placebo oil capsules once per day. The length of the follow-up was 7 months, from October 2016 until April 2017. Blood serum vitamin D (25(OH)D), parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium (Ca), ionized calcium (Ca-i), testosterone and cortisol values, and hand grip strength were measured four times during the study period. Abstract Background Sarcopenia gained importance in the evaluation of patients with chronic respiratory diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), since it may impact negatively on clinical outcomes. Aim Aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with sarcopenia, defined according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2) 2019 definition, and to evaluate the prevalence of the single criteria that define the EWGSOP2 definition (muscle strength, muscle quantity and physical performance), in a cohort of consecutive patients with IPF prospectively followed up in 9 hospitals in Northern Italy between December 2018 and May 2021. Methods Enrolled patients underwent an extensive pulmonary and nutritional assessment, including bioelectrical impedance analysis, dynamometry and 4-m gait speed test, both at IPF diagnosis and at 6-month follow-up. Results Out of the 83 patients (81% males, mean age 72.5 years) with IPF at disease diagnosis enrolled in the study, 19 (22.9%) showed sarcopenia, including 2 (2.4%) with severe sarcopenia, 5 (6.0%) with confirmed sarcopenia and 12 (14.5%) with probable sarcopenia. Sarcopenia was associated with a significantly higher severity of the disease and sedentary lifestyle, while no differences were observed in regards to body mass index, history of weight loss and comorbidities between patients with and without sarcopenia. Out of the 64 patients without sarcopenia at baseline, 16 cases showed alteration of muscle quantity and/or physical performance. In the 51 patients with complete data at 6-month follow-up, there were no cases of severe sarcopenia, 1 case (2.0%) showed confirmed sarcopenia, while the prevalence of probable sarcopenia was 19.6% (10 cases). No differences in regards to antifibrotic treatment received and onset of gastrointestinal side effects were observed between patients with and without sarcopenia at follow-up. Conclusions The prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with IPF both at diagnosis and at 6-month follow-up was low but not negligible and was associated with higher severity of the disease and sedentary lifestyle. In IPF patients, a comprehensive diagnostic work-up including all the criteria defining the EWGSOP2 definition might be more useful than a series testing for prompt recognition of nutritional and physical performance abnormalities.

Background: Physical performance tests are essential for a comprehensive health assessment, and have been described as predictors of disability and muscle mass decline after open chest heart surgery (OHS). We evaluated the association between physical performance tests with clinical outcomes after OHS in younger and older patients. Moreover, the ability of physical performance tests and European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (Euroscore II) to predict death was assessed. The Bioimpedance provides phase angle data, and it is used to monitor athletes. Muscle strength and power are important physiological/motor characteristics in sports that involve intense movement. The aim of this study was to verify the relationships between body composition, phase angle and upper/lower limb strength in adolescent athletes from different sports. The sample consisted of 473 athletes (Male: 285 and Female: 188), with a mean age of 16.4+1.2 years. The adopted statistic was Principal Component Analysis, with analysis groups formed as General, Male and Female. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin and Bartlett's (p<0.01) tests showed good results to follow Principal Component Analysis. The total variance showed that the formation of components was three for General, four for Male and five for Female, where the variance explained by the Principal Component Analysis in each group was 73.9%, 78.7% and 83.1%, respectively. The phase angle is a relatively new variable when evaluating in the sports context, it proved to be important in monitoring the physical condition of adolescent athletes, where in activities that are requested, a more advantageous muscle condition is presented when muscle mass is increased, where in addition to having a good relationship with strength, and it is also related to the variables of body composition and Bioimpedance. This study aims to determine the dimensions of the cup handle that are more comfortable for the user. The manufacture of cup handles generally does not involve dimensions with special standards but instead follows the shape of the cup itself. A unique design is not enough for a better user experience. Comfort must be considered using anthropometric dimensions and biomechanical strength. It is known the hand grip position has greater biomechanical strength than the lateral pinch grip position and can be used as a reference for determining the right dimensions for designing ergonomic cup handles. To achieve a hand grip position, it is necessary to change the shape of the cup handle with anthropometric measurements, it is known that the cup handle, which can fit the user's four fingers, has a dimension of 73.70 mm. However, the characteristics of the clay will make the ceramic experience shrinkage in dimensions. A dimensional tolerance of 21% is given so that anthropometric measurements can be achieved so that the handle dimension that can be proposed is 89.17 mm. Soccer (football) practice can induce a limitation of ankle range of motion (ROM) that is a possible risk factor for injury and other negative consequences over time. The main objective of this research was to investigate the effects of soccer practice on ankle ROM throughout the entire period of a sports career of soccer players (SP). Furthermore, the relationship between ankle ROM and muscle strength in SP of different ages was studied. A total of 204 SP (range 6.7–45.1 years) and 87 controls (range: 7.5–45.2 years) matched for age, body mass index (BMI), and gender, were assessed. Ankle ROM in both plantar flexion (APF) and dorsiflexion (ADF) in addition to handgrip strength (HGS) were evaluated using an inclinometer and the Jamar hydraulic hand dynamometer, respectively. The comparison between SP and control groups showed a significant reduction in ankle ROM of both APF (26.3 ± 7.2° vs. 32.6 ± 7.4°; d = −0.90; p < 0.001) and ADF (95.5 ± 15.6° vs. 105.5 ± 15.8°; d = −0.66; p < 0.001). In SP, the results of the ANOVAs test indicate that age had a significant effect on ADF (F = 4.352, p = 0.038, partial eta-squared (ηp2) = 0.015) but not on APF (F = 0.430, p = 0.746, ηp2 = 0.001). Moreover, considering only the SP, a weak inverse correlation between ADF and HGS group ADF was found (rs = −0.27; p < 0.001). Factors such as the non-linear trend of growth in young SP could hinder the definition of the relationship between ankle ROM, age, and muscle strength. All the currently used type A botulinum neurotoxins for clinical uses are of subtype A1. We compared the efficacy and safety for the first time head-to-head between a novel botulinum toxin A2NTX prepared from subtype A2 and onabotulinumtoxinA (BOTOX) derived from A1 for post-stroke spasticity. We assessed the modified Ashworth scale (MAS) of the ankle joint, the mobility scores of Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and the grip power of the unaffected hand before and after injecting 300 units of BOTOX or A2NTX into calf muscles. The procedure was done in a blinded manner for the patient, the injecting physician, and the examiner. Stroke patients with chronic spastic hemiparesis (15 for A2NTX and 16 for BOTOX) were enrolled, and 11 for A2NTX and 13 for BOTOX (MAS of ankle; > or = 2) were entered for the MAS study. Area-under-curves of changes in MAS (primary outcome) were greater for A2NTX by day 30 (p = 0.044), and were similar by day 60. FIM was significantly improved in the A2NTX group (p = 0.005), but not in the BOTOX group by day 60. The hand grip of the unaffected limb was significantly decreased in the BOTOX-injected group (p = 0.002), but was unaffected in the A2NTX-injected group by day 60, suggesting there was less spread of A2NTX to the upper limb than there was with BOTOX. Being a small-sized pilot investigation with an imbalance in the gender of the subjects, the present study suggested superior efficacy and safety of A2NTX, and warrants a larger scale clinical trial of A2NTX to confirm these preliminary results. Abstract Background Skeletal muscles are essential components of the neuromuscular skeletal system that have an integral role in the structure and function of the synovial joints which are often affected by osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of this study was to identify the baseline metabolomic signatures for the longitudinal reduction of muscle strength over 10 years in the well-established community-based Tasmanian Older Adult Cohort (TASOAC). Methods Study participants were 50–79 year old individuals from the TASOAC. Hand grip, knee extension, and leg strength were measured at baseline, 2.6-, 5-, and 10-year follow-up points. Fasting serum samples were collected at 2.6-year follow-up point, and metabolomic profiling was performed using the TMIC Prime Metabolomics Profiling Assay. Generalized linear mixed effects model was used to identify metabolites that were associated with the reduction in muscle strength over 10 years after controlling for age, sex, and BMI. Significance level was defined at α=0.0004 after correction of multiple testing of 129 metabolites with Bonferroni method. Further, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis was performed to explore if genetic factors account for the association between the identified metabolomic markers and the longitudinal reduction of muscle strength over 10 years. Results A total of 409 older adults (50% of them females) were included. The mean age was 60.93±6.50 years, and mean BMI was 27.12±4.18 kg/m2 at baseline. Muscle strength declined by 0.09 psi, 0.02 kg, and 2.57 kg per year for hand grip, knee extension, and leg strength, respectively. Among the 143 metabolites measured, 129 passed the quality checks and were included in the analysis. We found that the elevated blood level of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) was associated with the reduction in hand grip (p=0.0003) and knee extension strength (p=0.008) over 10 years. GWAS analysis found that a SNP rs1125718 adjacent to WISP1gene was associated with ADMA levels (p=4.39*10-8). Further, we found that the increased serum concentration of uric acid was significantly associated with the decline in leg strength over 10 years (p=0.0001). Conclusion Our results demonstrated that elevated serum ADMA and uric acid at baseline were associated with age-dependent muscle strength reduction. They might be novel targets to prevent muscle strength loss over time.

Sarcopenia is an emerging issue, but there is no universal consensus regarding its screening and diagnosis, especially regarding the influence of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 new definition on the prevalence of community-dwelling adults. To compare the prevalence of sarcopenia between the 2019 and 2014 definitions, a cross-sectional study including 606 normal nutritional status subjects (203 men/403 women; mean age 63.3 ± 10.0 years) was performed. Sarcopenic parameters, including calf circumference, grip strength, 6-m gait speed, and bioelectrical-impedance-analysis-derived skeletal mass index (SMI), were evaluated. According to the 2019 AWGS definition, the prevalence of possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia among community-dwelling adults was 7.4 and 2.8%, respectively. There were highly consistent findings regarding sarcopenia between the 2019 and 2014 AWGS definitions according to Cohen's kappa coefficient (0.668). However, the prevalence of possible sarcopenia according to 2014 and 2019 AWGS in males increased 7.9%; in contrast, sarcopenia decreased from 7.4 to 3.7% in females (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the AWGS 2019 definition is more convenient for sarcopenia case screening and remains considerably consistent in sarcopenia identification in community-dwelling adults in Taiwan. The discordance of possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia by sex is a concern.

Problem Statement: Soccer practice can induce marked changes in ankle joint mobility (AJM) with dreaded consequences related to the quality of balance, posture and gait. Moreover, a limited ankle range of motion may represent an important risk factor for injuries and negatively affect performance. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a stretching training protocol (STP) on the AJM of adult male soccer players (SP). Material and Methods: 34 amateur male SP (age 29.0±4.6 years) and 24 non-soccer players (control group) matched for age, gender and BMI were included in this study. In both groups AJM and muscle strength were evaluated by inclinometer and Jamar hydraulic hand dynamometer respectively. Moreover, data on sports practiced, years of activity, history of injuries, dominant kicking leg, and presence of athletic trainers were collected. SP group performed six months of a STP that included 4 exercises aimed at improving AJM. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the STP was suspended for 4 weeks in the middle period of the study. Results: At baseline, SP group showed reduced AJM compared to controls (116.1±13.1° vs. 137.7±13.6; p<0.001) while muscle strength was similar (45.0±7.5 vs 48.0±8.9 kg). STP produced a non-significant effect on AJM (116.1±13.1 vs 116.8±15.1°). No differences were found between the two groups considered as regards the difference in mobility between the two ankles (right vs left; dominant vs non-dominant). Considering the initial values, there was a direct correlation between HS and BMI (r=0.38; p<0.025), while AJM showed an inverse correlation with years of activity (-0.36; p<0.037). No correlation was found between hand grip test and AJM. Conclusions: SP showed a significant reduction in AJM which was difficult to recover even following a STP. The interruptions of sport activity due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the absence of athletic trainers in the sports clubs involved, in addition to the long history of soccer practice could justify, at least in part, the results obtained. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally, accounting for approximately 32% of all deaths in 2019. There has been increasing interest in understanding the role of low muscular strength as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, given its association with other cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome. An inverse association between muscle strength, chronic disease, all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular-related death has been reported. Recent clinical trials have consistently shown that resistance exercise, which increases strength, and potentially muscle mass, significantly improves the control of known cardiovascular disease risk factors and reduces the risk of all-cause death and cardiovascular mortality. In the present article, we review the growing body of evidence that supports the need for future research to evaluate the potential of handgrip strength as a screening tool for cardiovascular disease and its risk factors in the clinical medical setting, as part of routine care using an affordable handgrip strength device. Introduction: It has been well established that grip strength measurements can be useful as a benchmark for comparing the efficacy of different treatment modalities as well as an aid in the assessment of the progress of disease and rehabilitation. Grip strength has also been shown to be a representative marker for sociodemographic factors., Methods: Participants were selected from five different regions in a cross-sectional manner from the streets of Trinidad and Tobago, and a Jamar hand dynamometer was used to assess the metrics of hand grip, palmar grip, tip pinch, and key pinch across both hands. Data was analyzed comparing right and left as well as dominant and non-dominant hands, and participants were classified by occupation., Results: We enrolled 1233 participants in this study, of which the majority were female (54.5%). 90% of participants were right-hand dominant. The mean hand strength of the dominant hand was significantly greater than the non-dominant for all four strengths assessed. Participants of Afro-Trinbagonian descent were shown to have the highest mean values overall. We found no significant relationship between occupational intensity and mean grip strengths. For the male population, it was found that height, age, and BMI were all significant predictors of hand strength. This was notably only so for a minority of the female population tested., Conclusion: This study serves to provide the normative data for the adult healthy Trinbagonian population. Background: Grip strength has been identified as an important indicator of health status and predictor of clinical outcomes. The gold standard for measuring grip strength is the JAMAR® Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer. Less expensive dynamometers are available but have not been validated within a hospital setting. Objectives: To validate the Camry Digital Handgrip Dynamometer (Model EH101) against the validated JAMAR® Dynamometer (Model J00105) in a hospital population. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study with a randomised single-blind cross-over component was conducted on consenting adult patients admitted to general hospital wards. The best of three measurements taken using the dominant hand was used for analysis. Results: Fifty-one participants (median [interquartile range] age 42 [30–58] years; n = 27 [52.9%] female) were included. The mean difference between the Jamar® and Camry measurements was 1.9 kg ± 3.6 kg (t-value 0.9; p = 0.4). There was a strong positive correlation between the Jamar® and the Camry devices (R = 0.94; r² = 0.88; p 0.0001). Excellent agreement was found between Jamar® and Camry measurements (interclass correlational coefficient 0.97, 95% CI 0.94–0.99, p 0.0001). Hand dominance significantly affected the agreement between devices (p = 0.002). Conclusions: The Camry Digital Handgrip Dynamometer is a valid tool for assessing grip strength in hospitalised adult patients. Clinical implications: The Camry Digital Handgrip Dynamometer could be used as an inexpensive tool to measure grip strength.

Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome characterized by decreased physical performance, muscle mass, and strength. Since the intake of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) with iron can increase muscle mass and mitochondria in mice and elevate physical exercise performance in humans, the beneficial effects of ALA in patients with sarcopenia are expected, but this remains unexplored in the literature. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and dose dependency of ALA combined with iron in sarcopenia by measuring skeletal muscle mass index (SMI). Subjects with sarcopenia were enrolled and randomized into the ALA and sodium ferrous citrate (SFC) intake groups (ALA50/SFC29, ALA100/SFC29, ALA150/SFC29, ALA 100/SFC57, and ALA0/SFC29 placebo) and ingested the assigned study food for 12 weeks. The primary endpoint, the change in SMI from baseline to week 12, did not differ significantly between the groups. Hand grip significantly increased or tended to increase from baseline after 12 weeks with all doses of ALA or SFC compared with the placebo group. No consistent changes were observed in the other endpoints, including calf circumference, physical function, or quality of life (QOL). Although this study suggests safe administration and the possibility of ALA improving hand grip strength in patients with sarcopenia, further investigation is required.

Background: Pulmonary function can be impaired as a long-term consequence of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection on pulmonary function, exercise tolerance, and muscle strength in healthy middle-aged military outpatients according during the period of infection. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out from March 2020 to November 2022 at the Military Hospital “Celio” (Rome, Italy). If someone had a diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection certified by molecular nasal swab and if they performed pulmonary function tests, diffusion of carbon monoxide (DL’co), a six Minute Walk Test (6MWT), a Handgrip (HG) Test, and a One Minute Sit to Stand Test (1′STST). The included subjects were divided into two groups, A and B, according to the period of infection: A) from March 2020 to August 2021 and B) from September 2021 to October 2022. Results: One hundred fifty-three subjects were included in the study: 79 in Group A and 74 in Group B. Although the values were within the normal range, Group A had smaller FVC, FEV1, and DL’co compared to Group B. Group A also walked a shorter distance at the 6MWT and performed fewer repetitions in the 1′STS test compared to Group B. In both groups, the DL’co (%predicted) correlated with the 6MWT distance (R2 = 0.107, p < 0.001), the number of repetitions of the 1′STST (R2 = 0.086, p = 0.001), and the strength at the HG test (R2 = 0.08, p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study shows that the SARS-CoV-2 infection in healthy middle-aged military outpatients was more severe in the first waves than in the later ones and that, in healthy and physically fit individuals, even a marginal reduction in resting respiratory test values can have a major impact on exercise tolerance and muscles strength. Moreover, it shows that those infected more recently had symptoms related to the upper respiratory tract infection compared to those of the first waves.

Background: Electromyographic systems are widely used in scientific and clinical practice. The reproducibility and reliability of these measures are crucial when conducting scientific research and collecting experimental data.Objective: To test the reliability of surface electromyography signals from both the Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (FDS) and Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis (ECRB) muscles of both the left and right arms during an individual, static multi-planar maximum voluntary contraction handgrip task using the Myon 320 system (Myon AG, Switzerland).Methods: Eight right-handed male participants performed two maximal handgrip tests in five separate wrist positions using both hands. Muscle activity was recorded from both forearms. Reliability was measured using the Standard Error of Measurement (SEM), Coefficient of Variation (CV) and Intra-class correlation coefficients. Wrist joint position correlations within and between the FDS and ECRB muscle activities were also analysed.Results: Absolute reliability was shown across all positions for both hands with CV and SEM recorded at below 10%. The output measures indicate that the Myon 320 system (Myon AG, Switzerland) produces good to fair reliability when assessing forearm muscle activity. Correlations in the left FDS muscles were negative. Correlations between the left ECRB and left FDS muscles were variable but positive between the right ECRB and right FDS muscles.Conclusions: The data sets retrieved from all participants were reliably evaluated. Wrist position correlations within and between the FDS and ECRB muscles may have been influenced by hand dominance. Background: The need for a strong grip in 'ground' martial arts is undisputed, but it is not obvious in karate. It may be expected that in the case of advanced karate fighters where dynamic combat movements dominate, the level of speed skills will be high. However, does the karate style affect the Ditrich rod dexterity and the strength of the players' handshake? Methods: 39 participants were analyzed, all of whom were elite karate fighters—21 in the Kyokushin style (age: 31.4 ± 6.3; body weight: 77.2 ± 18.2 kg) and 18 in the Shotokan style (age: 23.3 ± 11.8 years; body weight: 70.9 ± 14.2 kg). They performed the following: a test of reaction speed and dexterity with a Ditrich rod, and a hand grip strength test with a dynamometer. Results: The data shows that there is no difference in the Ditrich rod test for both the left and right hand among the analyzed Kyokushin and Shotokan fighters. Significant differences were recorded in the grip strength of both hands (p < 0.05). There is a positive correlation between the strength of the grip on both hands (r = 0.593; p < 0.05). Discussion: Kyokushin-style karate players have a higher grip strength than those trained in the Shotokan style. Perhaps this is due to differences in the preparation for fights. The analysis showed no statistical significance in the Ditrich rod test. It is probable that the level of dexterity in karate is independent of the training canon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Skeletal muscles are essential components of the neuromuscular skeletal system that have an integral role in the structure and function of the synovial joints which are often affected by osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of this study was to identify the baseline metabolomic signatures for the longitudinal reduction of muscle strength over 10 years in the well-established community-based Tasmanian Older Adult Cohort (TASOAC). Methods: Study participants were 50–79 year old individuals from the TASOAC. Hand grip, knee extension, and leg strength were measured at baseline, 2.6-, 5-, and 10-year follow-up points. Fasting serum samples were collected at 2.6-year follow-up point, and metabolomic profiling was performed using the TMIC Prime Metabolomics Profiling Assay. Generalized linear mixed effects model was used to identify metabolites that were associated with the reduction in muscle strength over 10 years after controlling for age, sex, and BMI. Significance level was defined at α=0.0004 after correction of multiple testing of 129 metabolites with Bonferroni method. Further, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis was performed to explore if genetic factors account for the association between the identified metabolomic markers and the longitudinal reduction of muscle strength over 10 years. Results: A total of 409 older adults (50% of them females) were included. The mean age was 60.93±6.50 years, and mean BMI was 27.12±4.18 kg/m2 at baseline. Muscle strength declined by 0.09 psi, 0.02 kg, and 2.57 kg per year for hand grip, knee extension, and leg strength, respectively. Among the 143 metabolites measured, 129 passed the quality checks and were included in the analysis. We found that the elevated blood level of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) was associated with the reduction in hand grip (p=0.0003) and knee extension strength (p=0.008) over 10 years. GWAS analysis found that a SNP rs1125718 adjacent to WISP1gene was associated with ADMA levels (p=4.39*10-8). Further, we found that the increased serum concentration of uric acid was significantly associated with the decline in leg strength over 10 years (p=0.0001). Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that elevated serum ADMA and uric acid at baseline were associated with age-dependent muscle strength reduction. Background: Lateral epicondylitis of the elbow is a common degenerative disorder in middle-aged patients. Surgery is reserved for patients who do not respond to nonoperative treatment. Purpose: To evaluate hand-grip strength and return to heavy manual activities in patients engaged in work requiring heavy lifting after arthroscopic release of refractory lateral epicondylitis. Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: The study included consecutive patients who underwent arthroscopic release of the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon to treat recalcitrant lateral epicondylitis of the elbow, with a minimum 48-month follow-up. Functional outcome measures included assessment of hand-grip strength, visual analog scale for pain, and Mayo elbow performance score. The recorded measurements were compared at postoperative 1 and 6 months and the final assessment. Pre- and postoperative data were compared using the paired t test, and the various postoperative assessments were compared using 1-way analysis of variance. Results: A total of 22 patients (mean ± SD; age, 34.6 ± 5.9 years) with a mean follow-up of 60.5 ± 4.7 months were included in our study. There were highly significant improvements between preoperative and 1-month postoperative results regarding hand-grip strength (17.5 ± 4.1 kg to 34.4 ± 6.8 kg), visual analog scale score for pain (7.86 ± 1.2 to 1.8 ± 1.09), and Mayo score (57.1 ± 7.9 to 89.3 ± 4.9; P <.00001 for all). Significant improvements were found on all 3 functional measures between 1 and 6 months postoperatively (P ≤.05 was statistically significant), and there were nonsignificant improvements on all measures from 6-month to final follow-up. The patients regained 96.4% of their hand strength as compared with the unaffected side and returned to their previous activities without reporting serious complications. Conclusion: Minimally invasive arthroscopic release of recalcitrant lateral epicondylitis of the elbow provided a satisfactory functional result, as shown by regaining of hand-grip strength in patients engaged in heavy manual occupations without significant morbidities. Grip strength exercises are commonly used rehabilitation methods for recovery of hand function. They are easy to perform even without the direct support of a healthcare professional. However, without objective feedback, the patient may not be fully engaged in the rehabilitation process. To solve this problem, we developed a system for measuring grip strength in real time using a soft ball and a monocular camera. The system estimates the grip strength using the modelled relationship between the finger joint angles extracted from the camera image and the person's grip strength. A patient can get the feedback as numbers or movements displayed on the screen. Experimental results showed that there is a correlation between the finger joint angles and the air pressure of a ball when squeezed. The average estimation error was 16.1 hPa, and the average measurement range was 100–230 hPa. The estimation error was about 12% of the measurement range. They also showed that there is a correlation between the air pressure of a ball and the applied force.

Background: Grip strength has been identified as an important indicator of health status and predictor of clinical outcomes. The gold standard for measuring grip strength is the JAMAR® Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer. Less expensive dynamometers are available but have not been validated within a hospital setting. Objectives: To validate the Camry Digital Handgrip Dynamometer (Model EH101) against the validated JAMAR® Dynamometer (Model J00105) in a hospital population. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study with a randomised single-blind cross-over component was conducted on consenting adult patients admitted to general hospital wards. The best of three measurements taken using the dominant hand was used for analysis. Results: Fifty-one participants (median [interquartile range] age 42 [30–58] years; n = 27 [52.9%] female) were included. The mean difference between the Jamar® and Camry measurements was 1.9 kg ± 3.6 kg (t -value 0.9; p = 0.4). There was a strong positive correlation between the Jamar® and the Camry devices (R = 0.94; r ² = 0.88; p < 0.0001). Excellent agreement was found between Jamar® and Camry measurements (interclass correlational coefficient 0.97, 95% CI 0.94–0.99, p < 0.0001). Hand dominance significantly affected the agreement between devices (p = 0.002). Conclusions: The Camry Digital Handgrip Dynamometer is a valid tool for assessing grip strength in hospitalised adult patients. The study investigated the characteristics of kumi-kata in elite judokas on kinematic and temporal parameters of different types of handgrip (HG). Methods: fourteen participated in this study male athletes (23.5±2.61 years; 1.81±0.37 0 m; 87.25±22.75 kg), members of the Georgian Judo team. To characterize the dominance and types of kumi-kata were analysed, and to characterize kinematic and temporal parameters and handgrip. Results: The values of 0.26±0.69s and 0.31±0.03s for reaction time were obtained, respectively, in the full grip and pinch grip; 19.62±18.83N/cm/s and 6.17±3.48N/cm/s for the rate of force development; 475,21 ± 101,322 and 494,65±112,73 and FDR 1,45 ± 0,824s for the time between the force onset to the TFP; and 41,27±4,54N/cm/s. There was no significant difference variable, except for the dominance of kumi-kata (p<0.05) used in combat. Conclusion: The dominance kumi-kata is a technical option, as it does not depend on the kinetic-temporal parameters of handgrip. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soccer (football) practice can induce a limitation of ankle range of motion (ROM) that is a possible risk factor for injury and other negative consequences over time. The main objective of this research was to investigate the effects of soccer practice on ankle ROM throughout the entire period of a sports career of soccer players (SP). Furthermore, the relationship between ankle ROM and muscle strength in SP of different ages was studied. A total of 204 SP (range 6.7–45.1 years) and 87 controls (range: 7.5–45.2 years) matched for age, body mass index (BMI), and gender, were assessed. Ankle ROM in both plantar flexion (APF) and dorsiflexion (ADF) in addition to handgrip strength (HGS) were evaluated using an inclinometer and the Jamar hydraulic hand dynamometer, respectively. The comparison between SP and control groups showed a significant reduction in ankle ROM of both APF (26.3 ± 7.2° vs. 32.6 ± 7.4°; d = −0.90; p < 0.001) and ADF (95.5 ± 15.6° vs. 105.5 ± 15.8°; d = −0.66; p < 0.001). In SP, the results of the ANOVAs test indicate that age had a significant effect on ADF (F = 4.352, p = 0.038, partial eta-squared (ηp2) = 0.015) but not on APF (F = 0.430, p = 0.746, ηp2 = 0.001). Moreover, considering only the SP, a weak inverse correlation between ADF and HGS group ADF was found (rs = −0.27; p < 0.001). Factors such as the non-linear trend of growth in young SP could hinder the definition of the relationship between ankle ROM, age, and muscle strength. However, the appropriate consideration of age and muscle strength could facilitate the management of ankle ROM in PF of different ages.

Objective: In adults with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI), transcutaneous spinal stimulation (scTS) has improved upper extremity strength and control. This novel noninvasive neurotherapeutic approach combined with training may modulate the inherent developmental plasticity of children with SCI, providing even greater improvements than training or stimulation alone. Because children with SCI represent a vulnerable population, we first must establish the safety and feasibility of any potential novel therapeutic approach. The objectives of this pilot study were to determine the safety, feasibility, and proof of principle of cervical and thoracic scTS for short-term effect on upper extremity strength in children with SCI., Materials and Methods: In this nonrandomized, within-subject repeated measure design, seven participants with chronic cervical SCI performed upper extremity motor tasks without and with cervical (C3-C4 and C6-C7) and thoracic (T10-T11) site scTS. Safety and feasibility of using cervical and thoracic sites scTS were determined by the frequency count of anticipated and unanticipated risks (eg, pain, numbness). Proof-of-principle concept was tested via change in force production during hand motor tasks., Results: All seven participants tolerated cervical and thoracic scTS across the three days, with a wide range of stimulation intensities (cervical sites = 20-70 mA and thoracic site = 25-190 mA). Skin redness at the stimulation sites was observed in four of 21 assessments (19%) and dissipated in a few hours. No episode of autonomic dysreflexia was observed or reported. Hemodynamic parameters (systolic blood pressure and heart rate) remained within stable limits (p > 0.05) throughout the assessment time points at baseline, with scTS, and after the experiment. Objective: To assess the association between SARS‐CoV‐2 infection and decreased hand grip strength (HGS). Design Longitudinal population‐based study. Setting: Community‐dwelling older adults (aged ≥60 years) living in a rural Ecuadorian village struck by the SARS‐CoV‐2 pandemic. Participants: Of 282 enrolled individuals, 254 (90%) finished the study. Measurements: HGS was measured 3 months before (January 2020) and 9 months after the introduction of the virus into the population (January 2021). SARS‐CoV‐2 antibody testing was performed in two rounds: in May–June (early) and September–November (late), 2020. An independent association between SARS‐CoV‐2 infection and HGS decline was assessed by fitting linear mixed models for longitudinal data. Changes in HGS scores in SARS‐CoV‐2 seropositive subjects, according to the time elapsed since seroconversion, were compared with those who remained seronegative. Results: Overall, 149 (59%) individuals became seropositive for SARS‐CoV‐2. The mean HGS (in kg) was 25.3 ± 8.3 at baseline and 23.7 ± 8.1 at follow‐up (p = 0.028), with 140 individuals having >5% HGS decline between both measurements. The follow‐up HGS measurement decreased by 1.72 kg in seropositive individuals, and by 0.57 kg in their seronegative counterparts (p < 0.001). SARS‐CoV‐2 seropositive individuals were 2.27 times more likely (95% CI: 1.33–3.87) to have a lower HGS measurement at the time of follow‐up than those who remained seronegative. When compared with seronegative subjects, seropositive patients with early seroconversion were 3.41 times (95% CI: 1.73–6.74) more likely to have >5% HGS decline at the time of the follow‐up than those with later, i.e., more recent, infections. Conclusions: This study shows an independent deleterious impact of SARS‐CoV‐2 on HGS that is more marked among individuals with infections that occurred more than 8 months before follow‐up HGS. Indirect techniques of predicting hand grip force are fundamental to develop hand control systems for assistive devices. The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability of 3D position of forearm surface at different isometric hand grip forces. Three-dimensional motion analysis was used to measure displacement of 24 discrete and standardized surface markers placed on forearm in 20 healthy participants. The relative displacements were measured for isometric grip forces at 0%, 5%, 20% 50% and 80% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for relative radial displacement (RRD) of each marker was calculated. Averaged single measure ICC of 24 markers at five grip forces was 0.61; while the highest averaged single measure ICC (0.80) for all markers was achieved at 80% of MVC and the lowest (0.47) at 0% of MVC. The average measure ICC for each grip force across the 24 markers also increased with grip force from 0.80 at 0% of MVC to the maximum of 0.95 at 80% of MVC. In conclusion, RRD showed moderate and high ICCs for single and average measures respectively. Overall, this study suggests that the reliable dimensional changes of 3D positions of forearm surface might be considered as an indirect and non-invasive method to predict hand grip force in future.
