The structural and reflectance properties of large gallium (Ga) droplets and GaAs islands grown by droplet epitaxy (DE) were presented. The reflectance results of self-assembled large GaAs islands by DE suggest the possibility of a novel method for antireflective coating. The diameter, height, density, and aspect ratio of large Ga droplets were investigated up to the scale of optical size. After GaAs island growth, the reflectance of s-polarization at 70° on in-situ measurement was reduced up to approximately 2%-20% in the wavelength range of 350-900 nm. For large GaAs islands, reduction of reflectance for s-, p-polarization at 20°-80° and reduction of reflectance at normal incidence was presented. This result shows that a layer of self-assembled large GaAs islands by DE can be a good candidate for an antireflector for high-quality optoelectronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We compared the structural and optical properties of InAs/GaAs quantum dots grown by migration enhanced epitaxy, with and without arsenic, during indium deposition. The uniformity and size of the quantum dots are enhanced in a sample without arsenic. As a result, narrower and longer wavelength photoluminescence is observed in this sample. Furthermore, the thickness of the wetting layers is reduced by ∼20% in the sample without arsenic, and this result agrees well with the speculation that metallic indium has a smaller driving force for corrugating the InAs wetting layers before they are transformed from two-dimensional to three-dimensional layers. Additionally, the photoluminescence linewidth of the sample without arsenic is insensitive to the cryostat temperature due to two major factors: the reduced thickness of the wetting layers and the enhanced uniformity. In the sample with arsenic, however, the photoluminescence linewidth shows typical anomalies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The degradation behavior of the sulfur-treated InP surface at relatively low temperature has been investigated with x-ray photoelectron and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The results showed that the treated surfaces were oxidized to In[sub 2]O[sub 3], InPO[sub 3], and InPO[sub 4] at 250 °C and in a vacuum of 10[sup -3] Torr for 20 min. As the holding time for S-treated InP under a vacuum of 10[sup -3] Torr increased, the PL peak caused by the band edge transition decreased without the formation of oxides. It was therefore suggested that the decrease of the PL intensity for S-treated InP is only related to the generation of phosphorous vacancies at the surface, not to oxide formation. Piglets (n = 240, 11.0 [+ or -] 0.1 d old, 3.93 [+ or -] 0.05 kg) were allotted to one of four treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement to examine the effects of diet physical form and nursery environment during the first 14 d after weaning on growth to market weight. During the treatment period, pigs were housed (10 pigs/ pen) in either a conventional hot nursery (30[degrees]C) or a segregated-temperature nursery (cool ambient temp. of 24[degrees]C, with enclosed hot-box hovers at 32[degrees]C). Pigs in each environment were fed nutritionally identical diets in either liquid or dry-pellet form for 14 d. Subsequently, all pigs were fed identical dry diets and were housed in common grower-finisher facilities (penned by sex, five pigs/pen). At the end of the treatment period (d 14), pigs fed the liquid diet were 21% heavier than pigs fed the dry pellet diet (9.22 vs 7.60 kg; P [is less than] 0.001). Similarly, gain, feed intake, and gain/feed of liquid-fed pigs were 44%, 18%, and 22% greater, respectively, than observed for pigs fed the dry pellet diet. No main effect of environment was observed (P [is greater than] 0.10); however, an interaction with diet physical form occurred during the early-nursery period (P [is less than] 0.01). Pigs fed the liquid diet showed better performance in the conventional nursery, whereas pigs fed the dry pellet diet were favored in the segregated-temperature nursery. No major differences in growth performance or in ultrasound carcass measurements were detected during the growing-finishing period; however, the advantage in body weight of liquid-fed pigs gained during the first 2 wk postweaning was maintained to the end of the trial (113.9 vs 110.6 kg; P [is less than] 0.05). Pigs that were fed the early-nursery diet in liquid form reached market weight (110 kg) 3.7 d sooner than the dry-fed controls (P [is less than] 0.01). Estimates of lean gain (calculated from live ultrasound data) were unaffected, suggesting that composition of growth was not altered. Collectively, these results show that liquid feeding during early life can markedly accelerate piglet growth performance and that the growth advantage is maintained to market weight, with no evidence of compensatory gain in the dry-fed control pigs. The purpose of this study was to determine growth performance of nursing pigs in relationship to teat order and to observe teat preference by pigs. In the first experiment, litter size of 13 primiparous sows was adjusted to 9 (8.7 [+ or -] 1.5) pigs and teat order of each litter was observed on the day before slaughter. Another group of eight sows was killed on d 0 (within 12 h after farrowing). In the second experiment, litter size was adjusted to 9 (8.9 [+ or -] 1.4) pigs for 20 primiparous sows and teat order for each litter was observed 1 d before slaughter. The weights of sows and individual pigs were recorded at farrowing, weekly, and on the day before slaughter. Mammary glands were collected at slaughter on d 21 of lactation and trimmed of skin and the extraneous fat pad. Individual glands were separated, weighed, and ground for measurement of dry matter, dry fat-free tissue, protein, fat, ash, and DNA contents. Middle mammary glands had the greatest wet weight among glands obtained within 12 h after weaning (P [is less than] .05). For sows completing the 21 d lactation, only glands known to have been nursed were included in the data sets. Greater than 60% of the first four pairs of mammary glands were nursed, and less than 40% of the seventh and eighth glands were nursed by pigs during lactation. Pigs that nursed the first five pairs of anterior glands gained faster than pigs nursing the remaining glands. The first five pairs of anterior glands had greater wet and dry weights, and greater protein and DNA contents compared with the remaining glands. Pigs that nursed heavier glands gained weight faster (r = .68, P = .0001), and those heavier glands contained greater amounts of protein (r = .98, P = .0001) and DNA (r = .66, P = .0001). Variation in weight gain of pigs nursing the anterior and middle glands was not statistically significant. The functional superiority of anterior and middle glands was positively correlated with body weight gain of nursing pigs. Key Words: Lactation, Mammary Gland, Nursing Pigs, Teat Order
