Nanoscale material systems are central to next-generation optoelectronic and quantum technologies, yet their development remains hindered by limited characterization tools, particularly at terahertz (THz) frequencies. Far-field THz spectroscopy techniques lack the sensitivity for investigating individual nanoscale systems, whereas in near-field THz nanoscopy, surface states, disorder, and sample-tip interactions often mask the response of the entire nanoscale system. Here, we present a THz resonance-amplified near-field spectroscopy technique that can detect subtle conductivity changes in isolated nanoscale systems─such as a single InAs nanowire─under ultrafast photoexcitation. By exploiting the spatial localization and resonant field enhancement in the gap of a bowtie antenna, our approach enables precise measurements of the nanostructures through shifts in the antenna resonant frequency, offering a direct means of extracting the system response, and unlocking investigations of ultrafast charge-carrier dynamics in isolated nanoscale and microscale systems.

Metamaterial resonators have become an efficient and versatile platform in the terahertz frequency range, finding applications in integrated optical devices, such as active modulators and detectors, and in fundamental research, e.g., ultrastrong light-matter investigations. Despite their growing use, characterization of modes supported by these subwavelength elements has proven to be challenging and it still relies on indirect observation of the collective far-field transmission/reflection properties of resonator arrays. Here, we present a broadband time-domain spectroscopic investigation of individual metamaterial resonators via a THz aperture scanning near-field microscope (a-SNOM). The time-domain a-SNOM allows the mapping and quantitative analysis of strongly confined modes supported by the resonators. In particular, a cross-polarized configuration presented here allows an investigation of weakly radiative modes. The effect of terahertz (THz) pulse generation has revolutionized broadband coherent spectroscopy and imaging at THz frequencies. However, THz pulses typically lack spatial structure, whereas structured beams are becoming essential for advanced spectroscopy applications. Nonlinear optical metasurfaces with nanoscale THz emitters can provide a solution by defining the beam structure at the generation stage. We develop a nonlinear InAs metasurface consisting of nanoscale optical resonators for simultaneous generation and structuring of THz beams. We find that THz pulse generation in the resonators is governed by optical rectification. It is more efficient than in ZnTe crystals, and it allows us to control the pulse polarity and amplitude, offering a platform for realizing binary-phase THz metasurfaces. To illustrate this capability, we demonstrate an InAs metalens, which simultaneously generates and focuses THz pulses. The control of spatiotemporal structure using nanoscale emitters opens doors for THz beam engineering and advanced spectroscopy and imaging applications.

Ultrafast optical excitation of select materials gives rise to the generation of broadband terahertz (THz) pulses. This effect has enabled the field of THz time-domain spectroscopy and led to the discovery of many physical mechanisms behind THz generation. However, only a few materials possess the required properties to generate THz radiation efficiently. Optical metasurfaces can relax stringent material requirements by shifting the focus onto the engineering of local electromagnetic fields to boost THz generation. Here we demonstrate the generation of THz pulses in a 160 nm thick nanostructured GaAs metasurface. Despite the drastically reduced volume, the metasurface emits THz radiation with efficiency comparable to that of a thick GaAs crystal. We reveal that along with classical second-order volume nonlinearity, an additional mechanism contributes strongly to THz generation in the metasurface, which we attribute to surface nonlinearity. Despite their wide use in terahertz (THz) research and technology, the application spectra of photoconductive antenna (PCA) THz detectors are severely limited due to the relatively high optical gating power requirement. This originates from poor conversion efficiency of optical gate beam photons to photocurrent in materials with sub-picosecond carrier lifetimes. Here we show that using an ultra-thin (160 nm), perfectly absorbing low-temperature grown GaAs metasurface as the photoconductive channel drastically improves the efficiency of THz PCA detectors. This is achieved through perfect absorption of the gate beam in a significantly reduced photoconductive volume, enabled by the metasurface. This Letter demonstrates that sensitive THz PCA detection is possible using optical gate powers as low as 5 µW-three orders of magnitude lower than gating powers used for conventional PCA detectors. We show that significantly higher optical gate powers are not necessary for optimal operation, as they do not improve the sensitivity to the THz field. This class of efficient PCA THz detectors opens doors for THz applications with low gate power requirements.

Perfect optical absorption occurs in a metasurface that supports two degenerate and critically-coupled modes of opposite symmetry. The challenge in designing a perfectly absorbing metasurface for a desired wavelength and material stems from the fact that satisfying these conditions requires multi-dimensional optimization often with parameters affecting optical resonances in non-trivial ways. This problem comes to the fore in semiconductor metasurfaces operating near the bandgap wavelength, where intrinsic material absorption varies significantly. Here we devise and demonstrate a systematic process by which one can achieve perfect absorption in GaAs metasurfaces for a desired wavelength at different levels of intrinsic material absorption, eliminating the need for trial and error in the design process. Using this method, we show that perfect absorption can be achieved not only at wavelengths where GaAs exhibits high absorption, but also at wavelengths near the bandgap edge. In this region, absorption is enhanced by over one order of magnitude compared a layer of unstructured GaAs of the same thickness.

Infragranular layers constitute the main output of the primary somatosensory cortex and represent an important stage of cortico-cortical and cortico-subcortical integration. We have previously used chronic multiple single-unit recordings to study the spatiotemporal structure of tactile responses of infragranular neurons within the forepaw cortical representation in rats [Tutunculer B, Foffani G, Himes BT, Moxon KA (2006) Structure of the excitatory receptive fields of infragranular forelimb neurons in the rat primary somatosensory cortex responding to touch. Cereb Cortex 16:791-810]. Here we extend our understanding of this structure by studying the overlap between the forepaw and hindpaw cortical representations. We recorded 204 responsive neurons in chronic experiments from eight anesthetized rats. Overall, only 23% of neurons responded exclusively to one paw, 52% of neurons responded to two paws, 19% of neurons responded to three paws, and 5% of neurons responded to all four paws. Quantitative measures of response magnitudes and latencies revealed the following main results. (1) The responses of forepaw neurons overall displayed greater magnitudes and shorter latencies than the responses of hindpaw neurons. (2) The responses to ipsilateral stimuli displayed smaller magnitudes, and longer-and more variable-latencies than the responses to contralateral stimuli. (3) The responses of forepaw neurons to hindpaw stimuli displayed smaller magnitudes and longer latencies than the responses to forepaw stimuli, whereas the responses of hindpaw neurons to forepaw stimuli displayed smaller magnitudes but similar latencies compared with the responses to hindpaw stimuli. These results show that the spatiotemporal structure of tactile responses of infragranular neurons extends across all four paws, and provide the basic architecture for studying physiological integration and pathophysiological reorganization of tactile information in the infragranular layers of the rat primary somatosensory cortex.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate Ile responses in female broilers. In experiment 1, dietary Ile was 0.42 or 0.72% total of diet. Diets were fed to 3 broiler strains: multipurpose Arbor Acres+, high-yield Ross 508, and high-yield Ross 708. In experiment 2, dietary Ile dose responses (0.42 to 0.82% total of diet in 0.08% increments) were evaluated. A corn-soybean meal control (0.70%) diet was used in experiment 2 (6 replications). No Ile x strain interactions occurred. Feeding broilers 0.42% Ile suppressed (P < 0.05) BW gain, feed intake, feed conversion, and breast and thigh yields. Arbor Acres+ strain had a higher BW gain and feed intake (P < 0.05) than the Ross 508 and 708 strains. Differences (P < 0.05) among strains were observed in breast and drumstick yields; Ross 708 broilers had increased breast and drumstick yields in comparison to birds from the Arbor Acres+ and Ross 508 strains. Birds fed surfeit Ile in the titration diets grew as well as (P < 0.05) the birds fed the control diet. Quadratic responses (P < 0.05; 95% of response) were obtained for BW gain (0.67%), feed intake (0.66%), feed conversion (0.68%), and breast meat yield (0.63%). The 30- to 42-d Ile need for female broilers is between 0.63 and 0.68% of total diet (0.59 to 0.64% digestible Ile).

Broilers fed diets with reduced amino acid levels may be limiting in isoleucine. Because research addressing daily Ile needs for broiler immunity is sparse, Ile responses for immunity in female broilers were evaluated in 2 experiments in broilers from 30 to 42 d of age. Cellular and humoral immunity were evaluated in diets limiting in Ile and diets varying in Ile from deficient to adequate. Pen was the experimental unit in both experiments. Treatments in experiment 1 consisted of 2 levels of Ile (0.42 vs. 0.72% total of diet) and 3 strains of broilers, Arbor Acres+, Ross 508, Ross 708 (6 treatments; 5 pens each). In experiment 1, measurements consisted of: a cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity test to phytohemagglutinin-P (PHA-P) on d 37 and 38; cell quantification of CD4+, CD8+, and BU-1+ lymphocytes at d 41 and 42; and relative immune organ weights at 42 d. No Ile x strain interaction occurred. Feeding an Ile-deficient diet to broilers suppressed the cell mediated response to PHA-P, and reduced thymus weight and the percentage of CD8+ T cells. There were no significant differences between strains. In experiment 2, gradations of Ile (0.42, 0.50, 0.58, 0.66, 0.74, and 0.82% total of diet) were fed to one strain (Ross 508) of female broilers (7 pens per diet). A control diet containing 0.70% Ile (6 pens) was compared with an Ile surfeit concentration. Measurements in experiment 2 consisted of a hypersensitivity test to PHA-P on d 35 and 36; a primary antibody response to SRBC from 35 to 42 d; cell quantification of CD8+ alpha, beta, and T cell receptor (TCR)-1 (delta/gamma) lymphocytes on d 41 and 42; and immune organ weights at 42 d. Immunity measurements in birds fed surfeit Ile in the titration diets were equal to birds fed the control diet. A linear response to increasing Ile was obtained for relative bursa, but no Ile quadratic responses were noted for other measurements in experiment 2. Although feeding broilers a diet deficient in Ile suppressed some immune criteria, it does not appear that a marginal Ile deficiency will compromise immunity in growing female broilers.

Many medical schools and primary care residencies provide little formal instruction in musculoskeletal examination skills. Physical therapists are well qualified by knowledge and experience to teach these skills to students and residents. The authors present educational objectives that have been utilized since May 1988 in the physical therapy teaching portion of a sports medicine rotation in a family practice residency, and they describe the educational and consultative roles of a physical therapist in the residency. The therapist demonstrated the portion of the musculoskeletal examination that is important for the differentiation of contractile and inert tissue involvement, and she reviewed problems unique to athletes. The therapist's presence exposed students, residents, and faculty to the appropriate use of physical therapists as consultants and clinicians.
