Introduction Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) of the intestine of preterm infants leads to the risk of abdominal surgery, short bowel syndrome, neurodevelopmental disorders and death. Although the risks of NEC and its complications have been recognised in many countries, few countries have established NEC-specific registries to continuously monitor its aetiology and prognosis. In China, the understanding of risk factors and prognosis of NEC is incomplete, characterised by a lack of evidence from prospective and multicentre studies. Therefore, we designed a multicentre, prospective, open observational cohort study with the aim of investigating the risk factors and prognosis of NEC in a real-world setting in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, by constructing an online registry of children with NEC and a bank of biospecimens.Methods This is a prospective, multicentre, open observational cohort study. From June 2024 to June 2028, more than 600 patients with NEC from 15 tertiary hospitals in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, will be enrolled in the study. By constructing an online registry for NEC, clinical data will be collected during the prenatal and hospitalisation periods. Prospectively, biospecimens will be collected during the period of suspected NEC, at the time of confirmed NEC, and at the time of confirmed severe NEC, and filed in the online registry system. Follow-up data will include postdischarge healthcare needs, growth patterns measures, eye or vision examinations, cranial MRI findings, brainstem auditory evoked potentials or automated auditory brainstem responses, and the Chinese Griffith Developmental Scale at corrected age 18–24 months. Follow-up results were likewise recorded in an online registry system. Hospitalisation outcomes, including severe NEC, somatic growth and survival status, will be collected at discharge. Follow-up outcomes will include loss to visit, survival status, somatic growth measures and severe neurodevelopmental deficits at corrected age 18–24 months. This study will enhance our overall understanding of the risk factors and outcomes of NEC, ultimately helping to reduce the incidence of neonatal NEC and its poor prognosis.Ethics and dissemination Our programme has received approval from the Ethics Committee for Scientific Research Projects of the Longgang District Maternity & Child Healthcare Hospital in Shenzhen City (ethics approval number: LGFYKYXMLL-2024-47-01). We anticipate presenting our findings at various national conferences and submitting them to peer-reviewed paediatrics journals.Trial registration number ChiCTR2400085043.

Abstract This paper is based on the proximity engineering project of the Baishiyi tunnel group passing under the Chongqing West Station track group. Considering the train load and the spatial relationship of the tunnel and track groups, the settlement patterns, horizontal displacement, and differential settlement of the tunnel–strata–tracks system during the excavation process are studied through theoretical calculations and numerical simulation methods. The results indicate that the tunnel vault, strata, and track settlement deformation patterns are similar. Throughout the tunnel construction process, the tracks underwent uplift, settlement, and eventually stabilized. The settlement trough formed by the excavation of the three tunnels below the track group has an impact range of 25–145 m. Between 35 and 75 m, the differential settlement of the double track gradually increases with excavation. As the tunnel face reaches 75 m, the track differential settlement gradually converges and tends to stabilize. To minimize the impact of underpass tunnel construction on track groups, it is recommended to use a combination of full-section hole grouting and surface reinforcement grouting for ground reinforcement. Additionally, optimizing the construction parameters, including the step length and primary support closure time, and strengthening the locking anchor can further reduce the impact.

Currently, there is a lack of standardized diagnostic criteria for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), making it a subject of ongoing debate. The optimal diagnostic method and screening strategy for GDM remain contentious. In this review, we summarize the criteria and methods for diagnosing GDM, and perform a comparison between universal and selective screening strategies. Therefore, this review aims to highlight the following: (1) The most widely adopted criteria for GDM are those established by the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG). (2) Evidence from cohort studies suggests that the one-step diagnostic method is associated with improved pregnancy outcomes and appears more cost-effective compared to the two-step method. (3) Universal screening is more cost-effective than selective screening, which may overlook a significant number of women with GDM. Additionally, various methods have been proposed for early pregnancy screening (before 14 weeks). Finally, an outlook is presented for the diagnosis of GDM, emphasizing the importance of large-scale randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to provide stronger evidence for future support.

Background/Objectives: Leflunomide, an isoxazole immunosuppressant, is widely used in the treatment of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) as well as lupus nephritis (LN). In recent years, clinical data have shown that some patients have obvious weight loss, liver injury, and other serious adverse reactions after taking leflunomide. However, the causes and mechanisms by which leflunomide reduces weight are unclear. Methods: Therefore, we used a mouse animal model to administer leflunomide, and we observed that the weight of mice in the leflunomide experimental group was significantly reduced (p < 0.01). In this animal experiment, a metabolomic method was used to analyze the livers of the mice in the experimental group and found that the main difference in terms of metabolic pathways was in the metabolism of aromatic amino acids, and it was confirmed that leflunomide can inhibit the limitations of phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis. Results: Our study revealed that leflunomide inhibited the activity of DAHPS in the gut microbiota, disrupting the metabolism of phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan, as well as the metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids. Leflunomide also increased endoplasmic reticulum stress by activating the PERK pathway, thereby promoting CHOP expression and increasing apoptosis-induced liver damage. Conclusions: These effects may be related to the observed weight loss induced by leflunomide.

Pesticide residues in soil, especially multiple herbicide residues, cause a series of adverse effects on soil properties and microorganisms. In this work, the degradation of three herbicides and the effect on bacterial communities under combined pollution was investigated. The experimental results showed that the half-lives of acetochlor and prometryn significantly altered under combined exposure (5.02–11.17 d) as compared with those of individual exposure (4.70–6.87 d) in soil, suggesting that there was an antagonistic effect between the degradation of acetochlor and prometryn in soil. No remarkable variation in the degradation rate of atrazine with half-lives of 6.21–6.85 d was observed in different treatments, indicating that the degradation of atrazine was stable. 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing results showed that the antagonistic effect of acetochlor and prometryn on the degradation rate under combined pollution was related to variation of the Sphingomonas and Nocardioide. Furthermore, the potential metabolic pathways of the three herbicides in soil were proposed and a new metabolite of acetochlor was preliminarily identified. The results of this work provide a guideline for the risk evaluation of combined pollution of the three herbicides with respect to their ecological effects in soil.

Background: In the process of international communication in Chinese Wushu (ICCW), the government controls the orientation, scale, pace. However, the ICCW currently lacks a standardised government capacity structural system, and a detailed study of framework construction may be required to ensure the smooth development of the ICCW.Objectives: This study aims to clarify these elements and construct a framework for a governmental capacity system for ICCW.Methods: For this purpose, an expert interview outline was designed, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 61 experts. Using grounded theory in the qualitative research method, NVivo 12 software was used to conduct a three-level coding analysis of the interview text for data processing and analysis.Results: We extracted 58 opening codes and 11 tree nodes and categorised them into three core categories: supply side government capacity, environment-side government capacity, and demand-side government capacity, accounting for 62.36 %, 24.76 %, and 12.86 % of the total, respectively, which jointly constructed the framework structure system of the governmental capacity system for the ICCW.Conclusions: This study found that these three-dimensional government capacities have synergistic effects and that multiple measures work together. The government should ensure the supply side's direct promotion effect; the environmental side's indirect influencing effect; and the demand side's internal driving effect to promote ICCW. Meanwhile, a closed-loop systematic study of communication processes should be conducted in combination with communication organisations and individuals.

IntroductionAttention is a complex cognitive function of human brain that plays a vital role in our daily lives. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is used to measure and analyze attention due to its high temporal resolution. Although several attention recognition brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been proposed, there is a scarcity of studies with a sufficient number of subjects, valid paradigms, and reliable recognition analysis across subjects.MethodsIn this study, we proposed a novel attention paradigm and feature fusion method to extract features, which fused time domain features, frequency domain features and nonlinear dynamics features. We then constructed an attention recognition framework for 85 subjects.Results and discussionWe achieved an intra-subject average classification accuracy of 85.05% ± 6.87% and an inter-subject average classification accuracy of 81.60% ± 9.93%, respectively. We further explored the neural patterns in attention recognition, where attention states showed less activation than non-attention states in the prefrontal and occipital areas in α, β and θ bands. The research explores, for the first time, the fusion of time domain features, frequency domain features and nonlinear dynamics features for attention recognition, providing a new understanding of attention recognition.

This study investigates the association between prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and the incidence and frequency of respiratory tract infections (RTIs) in preschool children. We selected 527 mother–infant pairs from Wuhan Healthy Baby Cohort (WHBC), China. Ten PFASs were measured in umbilical cord serum, and we collected data on common RTIs in preschool children aged 4 years through a questionnaire. Associations of single PFASs with the incidence and frequency of RTIs were analyzed via Logistic regression and Poisson regression, while the collective effect was assessed by weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression. Furthermore, stratified and interaction analyses were performed to evaluate if there were sex-specific associations. We found a positive correlation between perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoDA) and the incidence of tonsillitis, with several PFASs also showing positive associations with its frequency. Moreover, perfluorotridecanoic acid (PFTrDA) showed a positive link with the frequency of common cold. The results of WQS regression revealed that after adjusting for other covariates, PFASs mixture showed a positive association with the incidence of tonsillitis, the frequency of common cold, and episodes. In particular, perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA), PFDoDA, PFTrDA, perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) and 8:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acid (8:2 Cl-PFESA) had the most significant impact on this combined effect. The results suggest that both single and mixed exposures to PFASs may cause RTIs in preschool children. However, there was no statistically significant interaction between different PFASs and sex.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a crucial and widely utilized technique in neuroscience research. In this paper, we introduce a novel graph neural network called the spatial-temporal graph attention network with a transformer encoder (STGATE) to learn graph representations of emotion EEG signals and improve emotion recognition performance. In STGATE, a transformer-encoder is applied for capturing time-frequency features which are fed into a spatial-temporal graph attention for emotion classification. Using a dynamic adjacency matrix, the proposed STGATE adaptively learns intrinsic connections between different EEG channels. To evaluate the cross-subject emotion recognition performance, leave-one-subject-out experiments are carried out on three public emotion recognition datasets, i.e., SEED, SEED-IV, and DREAMER. The proposed STGATE model achieved a state-of-the-art EEG-based emotion recognition performance accuracy of 90.37% in SEED, 76.43% in SEED-IV, and 76.35% in DREAMER dataset, respectively. The experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed STGATE model for cross-subject EEG emotion recognition and its potential for graph-based neuroscience research.

BackgroundThis experimental study aimed to determine the dynamic changes in myocardial strain and microvascular perfusion in diabetic rats by comprehensive echocardiography while evaluating the effect of dapagliflozin (DAPA).Materials and methodsMale Sprague–Dawley rats (n = 128) were randomly divided into four groups based on the presence or absence of a high-fat diet and streptozotocin-induced diabetes with or without DAPA treatment (n = 32/group). Serial conventional ultrasound, two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) and myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE) were performed at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks, and left ventricular global longitudinal strain (GLS), myocardial blood flow velocity (MBFV), myocardial blood flow (MBF), and myocardial blood volume (MBV) were determined. All animals were sacrificed immediately after the last echo measurement for histopathological assessment.ResultsDespite similar conventional Doppler-echo indexes among the groups at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks (p > 0.05), left ventricular GLS, MBFV, MBF, and MBV were decreased at 8 weeks in diabetic rats (p < 0.05) as detected by both 2D-STE and MCE. These indexes were significantly improved at 6 and 8 weeks after treatment with DAPA for diabetic rats (p < 0.05), reaching similar values observed in non-diabetic controls. DAPA treatment was associated with increased myocardial vacuolization and microvessel density and reduced interstitial fibrosis in diabetic rats.ConclusionsCombined 2D-STE and MCE is sensitive for detecting left ventricular deformity and impaired microvascular perfusion in prediabetes and the early stage of diabetes mellitus. DAPA exerts a beneficial effect on protecting myocardial perfusion in diabetic rats.

ObjectiveTo evaluate transverse maxillomandibular discrepancy and dental compensation in first molar areas in 7- to 9-year-old children with skeletal Class III malocclusion without posterior crossbite using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).MethodsThe sample of this retrospective study consisted of 60 children (7 to 9 years old), who were divided into the skeletal Class III malocclusion group (study group, skeletal Class III malocclusion without posterior crossbite, N = 31) and the Class I occlusion group (control group, Class I occlusion with one or two impacted teeth, N = 30). CBCT data were obtained from the database of the Department of Radiology of Hospital of Stomatology, Shandong University. For three-dimensional reconstruction of the head, the dental arch width, basal bone width, and buccolingual inclination angle were measured using MIMICS 21.0 software. Independent-sample t tests were used to compare the two groups.ResultsThe mean age of the children was 8.18±0.83years. The width of the maxillary basal bone was significantly smaller in the skeletal Class III malocclusion group (59.75 ± 3.14 mm) than in the Class I occlusion group (62.39 ± 3.01 mm) (P < 0.01). The mandibular basal bone width was significantly larger in the skeletal Class III malocclusion group (60.00 ± 2.56 mm) than in the Class I occlusion group (58.19 ± 2.42 mm) (P < 0.01). The difference in the width of the maxillary and mandibular bases in the skeletal Class III malocclusion group (-0.25 ± 1.73 mm) was significantly different from that in the Class I occlusion group (4.20 ± 1.25 mm) (P < 0.01). However, there was no significant difference in the upper or lower dental arch width between the two groups (P > 0.05). The buccal inclination of the maxillary molars in the skeletal Class III malocclusion group (31.4° ± 8.9°) was significantly higher than that in the Class I occlusion group (17.64° ± 7.3°) (P < 0.01), as was the lingual inclination angle of mandibular molars (45.24° ± 8.3° vs. 37.96° ± 10.18°; P < 0.01).ConclusionTransverse maxillary and mandibular discrepancies in the posterior area and transverse dental compensation were found in the early mixed dentition of patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion without posterior crossbite. This suggests that even in the absence of posterior crossbite, maxillary expansion can be attempted to correct the maxillomandibular transverse discrepancy.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a non-muscular communication technology that provides an information exchange channel for our brains and external devices. During the decades, BCI has made noticeable progress and has been applied in many fields. One of the most traditional BCI applications is the BCI speller. This article primarily discusses the progress of research into P300 BCI spellers and reviews four types of P300 spellers: single-modal P300 spellers, P300 spellers based on multiple brain patterns, P300 spellers with multisensory stimuli, and P300 spellers with multiple intelligent techniques. For each type of P300 speller, we further review several representative P300 spellers, including their design principles, paradigms, algorithms, experimental performance, and corresponding advantages. We particularly emphasized the paradigm design ideas, including the overall layout, individual symbol shapes and stimulus forms. Furthermore, several important issues and research guidance for the P300 speller were identified. We hope that this review can assist researchers in learning the new ideas of these novel P300 spellers and enhance their practical application capability.

Terahertz (THz) waves can cover the characteristic spectra of substances such as plasma, organisms, and biomolecules, whereas THz photons have low energy and do not damage biological tissues. Therefore, its absorption characteristics in the THz region can be used to characterize the internal structure of biomolecules. In this study, we designed a microfluidic chip and combined it with THz technology. The spectral intensity in descending order was found to be deionized water, phenylalanine, histidine, glycine and glutamic acid by observing the THz wave transmission in the range of 0.1–1.0 THz, comparing the frequency domain spectra of four amino acid solutions with volume fraction of 2% and deionized water. It is inferred that different molecular structures of amino acids resulted in different numbers of hydrogen bonds formed between them and water molecules, leading to different degrees of absorption of THz waves. In addition, magnetic fields parallel to the THz wave transmission were used to study the variation of different amino acids with magnetic field intensity. It is found that increasing the magnetic field strength decrease the transmission of THz waves. This is because under the action of the magnetic field, on the one hand, the hydrogen bonds formed by water molecules are strengthened and the absorption of THz waves is enhanced; on the other hand, amino acid molecules aggregate and the radius of molecular clusters increases, thus blocking the transmission of THz waves. Finally, we also calculated the electric conductivity of the solutions to prove the accuracy of the experimental results from a theoretical point of view.

Abstract This study was conducted to explore the roles and related mechanisms of lncRNA-TCONS_00147848 (TCONS_00147848) in nasal mucosa cell apoptosis and allergic rhinitis (AR). AR mice were sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA), with the TCONS_00147848 interference lentiviral vector (TCONS_00147848 shRNA) and FOSL2 overexpressing lentiviral vectors (pCDH-FOSL2) constructed respectively. NC shRNA, TCONS_00147848 shRNA and TCONS_00147848 shRNA + pCDH-FOSL2 were transfected into AR mice and mice with TNF-α induced nasal mucosa cells. The allergic reaction symptoms were evaluated by scoring. And in this study, we used Hematoxylin–Eosin (HE) staining and Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) to detect the histological changes of nasal mucosa and apoptosis of nasal mucosa epithelial cells in mice, cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, Transwell and annexin V/PI to detect proliferation, migration and apoptosis of nasal mucosa cells of mice, respectively, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect the expression of inflammatory factors, qRT-PCR to detect TCONS_00147848 expression, Western blot assay to detect the expressions of FOSL2, JAK-2, STAT3, p-STAT3, BAX and BCL-2, RNA-binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay, RNA pull down assay and Co-immunoprecipitation (CoIP) assay to identify TCONS_00147848 targeting FOSL2. All these findings above reveal that knocking down TCONS_00147848 can reduce the allergic reaction symptom score of AR mice and the inflammatory reaction. The expression of IgE, IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, IL-9, IFN-γ and TNF-α in serum decreased. The expression of FOSL2, JAK-2, p-STAT3 and BAX in nasal mucosa and nasal mucosa cells of mice decreased as well, but BCL-2 expression increased. In addition, koncking down TCONS_00147848 can also inhibit the apoptosis of TNF-α induced nasal mucosa cells in mice and promote cell proliferation and migration. However, FOSL2 overexpression neutralized the effect of TCONS_00147848 shRNA. In nasal mucosa cells of mice, TCONS_00147848 can target FOSL2, interacting with STAT3. Inhibition of TCONS_00147848 can regulate JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway and reduce inflammatory response in AR mice.

This paper proposes a new implementation method to significantly improve the magnetic sensitivity of a fully symmetric vertical Hall device (FSVHD) based on low-voltage CMOS technology. The FSVHD consists of four identical three-contact vertical Hall elements (3CVHE) and each 3CVHE is located in a low-doped deep n-well. The terminals of the 3CVHE are $\text{n}^{+}$ implanted in an n-well and a $\text{p}^{+}$ implantation in a p-well is performed to act as a trench between two adjacent $\text{n}^{+}$ contacts, enabling Hall current flowing deeply for sensitivity improvement. The influence of the geometry sizes on magnetic sensitivity is exploited utilizing TCAD simulation to obtain the optimized device structure in a $0.18~\mu\text{m}$ CMOS standard technology. The experimental results reveal that the proposed FSVHD with a $\text{p}^{+}$ /p-well trench can attain an improved voltage-related sensitivity of 8.4 mV/VT, which is about 70% higher than that of a conventional FSVHD without a trench in the same CMOS fabrication process, while offset and noise are not degraded. The proposed $\text{p}^{+}$ /p-well implantation trench is a good solution to enhance the sensitivity of a low-voltage CMOS VHD with a low manufacturing cost.

Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has a harmful effect on the stability and osseointegration of dental implants. T2DM induces mitochondrial damage by inhibiting AMPK signaling, resulting in oxidative stress and poor osteogenesis in the peri-implant bone area. Genipin is a major component of gardenia fruits with strong antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and antidiabetic actions, and it also can activate mitochondrial quality control via the AMPK pathway. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of genipin and insulin treatment on implant osseointegration in T2DM rats and explore the underlying mechanisms. Methods Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats received implant surgery in their femurs and were then assigned to five groups that were subjected to different treatments for three months: control group, T2DM group, insulin-treated T2DM group (10 IU/kg), genipin-treated T2DM group (50 mg/kg), and the genipin and insulin combination-treated T2DM group. Then, we regularly assessed the weight and glucose levels of the animals. Rats were euthanized at 3 months after the implantation procedure, and the femora were harvested for microscopic computerized tomography analysis, biomechanical tests, and different histomorphometric assessment. Results The results indicated that the highest blood glucose and oxidative stress levels were measured for the T2DM group, resulting in the poorest osseointegration. The combination-treated T2DM group mitigated hyperglycemia and normalized, reactivated AMPK signaling, and alleviated oxidative stress as well as reversed the negative effect of osseointegration. There were beneficial changes observed in the T2DM-genipin and T2DM-insulin groups, but these were less in comparison to the combination treatment group. Conclusion Our study suggests that treatment with genipin in combination with insulin could be an effective method for promoting implant osseointegration in T2DM rats, which may be related to AMPK signaling.

Background: Vitamin D supplementation has been proven to be effective in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR). Objective: We conducted the present study to explore the role and efficacy of vitamin D adjuvant therapy for the treatment of inflammation in patients with AR. Methods: Out of 127 patients with potential eligible AR, 60 were randomly assigned into two groups and were finally included in our analysis (n=30 for each intervention). The patients with potential eligible AR were randomly allocated to intervention with desloratadine citrate disodium (DCD, 8.8 mg/day) without and with vitamin D3 nasal drops (1.5х106 IU, once/week) for four weeks. Thirty healthy control subjects were included in our study. We assessed the changes in the serum 25(OH)D, peripheral blood eosinophils, interleukin (IL)-4 levels, and nasal symptoms. Serum 25(OH)D, peripheral blood eosinophils, and IL-4 levels were detected respectively with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), a blood detector, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Our patients who received vitamin D3 adjuvant therapy had a higher serum 25(OH)D level (47.57 ± 2.83 vs. 31.51 ± 2.95 ng/ml, p=0.000) and lower AR symptoms score (2.07 ± 1.89 vs. 3.37 ± 1.50, p=0.005), serum IL-4 (10.38 ± 3.41 vs. 12.79 ± 5.40 pg/ml, p=0.043), and peripheral blood eosinophils (0.34 ± 0.09 vs. 0.41 ± 0.10 109/l, p=0.003) compared with DCD single treatment. The efficacy rates of DCD with and without vitamin D3 in AR were 97% and 84%, respectively. Conclusion: Nasal vitamin D3 combined with DCD could improve the clinical symptoms of AR. Vitamin D3 adjunct therapy showed significant effects on inhibiting inflammation in patients with AR. We concluded that vitamin D3 supplementation could be an effective adjuvant therapy in AR patients.

In order to improve the survival rate and the clinical treatment effect of breast cancer patients, the pathogenic genes of breast cancer were studied from the molecular mechanism. At first, the differential expression of 113 normal tissues and 1 109 cancer tissues was analyzed. Then, the complementary genes were grouped in a conditional joint analysis method for differentially expressed genes, and a set of gene fitting prognostic models were selected by stepwise Cox regression. The results show that six genes-[WTBX]VWCE, SPDYC, CRYBG3, DEFB1, SEL1L2 and NMNAT2-have a harmful effect on survival rate. Four genes AMZ1, GJB2, CXCL2 and ALDOC are beneficial to survival rate. The final prognostic model of the 10 genes can significantly divide the samples into high-risk group and low-risk group, and predict the 5-year and 10-year survival rates of breast cancer patients, and the time-dependent AUC values are both up to 0.7 or more. This method can take advantage of the correlation between genes to reduce dimensionality of high-dimensional data and eliminate the problem of collinearity between genes. The prognosis model of these 10 genes can provide help for the clinical prediction of patients.

Summary: The vibrational and rotational frequencies of most biological macromolecules fall within the terahertz (THz) band; therefore, the THz wave has a strong ability to distinguish substances. Saccharides are important organic substances and the main source of life-sustaining activities. In this study, the spectral characteristics of D-glucose, α-lactose hydrate, and β-maltose hydrate were measured in the solid state through THz time-domain spectroscopy in the frequency range of 0.1–2.5 THz. The crystal configurations of these three saccharides were then simulated using solid-state density functional theory, and the experimental results were found to be in good agreement with the simulation results. Furthermore, the spectral characteristics of the three saccharides in solutions were measured. Each saccharide was found to have unique spectral characteristics, and a correlation existed between the THz absorption spectra of the same substance in the solid state and aqueous solution.

In this study, the effect on the terahertz (THz) transmission characteristics was investigated by varying the constant magnetic field time at both ends of the liquid sample (deionized water, CuSO4, CuCl2, (CH3COO) 2Cu, Na2SO4, NaCl, CH3COONa solution). The results show that the transmission intensity of THz waves decreases with the increase of solution residence time in a constant magnetic field. It is inferred that the magnetic field increases the number of hydrogen bonds in the solution, enhances the role of hydrogen bonds, and weakens the intensity of THz transmission spectra.

For patients with disorders of consciousness, such as unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS) patients and minimally conscious state (MCS) patients, their long treatment cycle and high cost commonly put a heavy burden on the patient’s family and society. Therefore, it is vital to accurately diagnose and predict consciousness recovery for such patients. In this paper, we explored the role of the P300 signal based on an audiovisual BCI in the classification and prognosis prediction of patients with disorders of consciousness. This experiment included 18 patients: 10 UWS patients and 8 MCS- patients. At the three-month follow-up, we defined patients with an improved prognosis (from UWS to MCS-, from UWS to MCS+, or from MCS- to MCS+) as “improved patients” and those who stayed in UWS/MCS as “not improved patients”. First, we compared and analyzed different types of patients, and the results showed that the P300 detection accuracy rate of “improved” patients was significantly higher than that of “not improved” patients. Furthermore, the P300 detection accuracy of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients was significantly higher than that of non-traumatic brain injury (NTBI, including acquired brain injury and cerebrovascular disease) patients. We also found that there was a positive linear correlation between P300 detection accuracy and CRS-R score, and patients with higher P300 detection accuracy were likely to achieve higher CRS-R scores. In addition, we found that the patients with higher P300 detection accuracies tend to have better prognosis in this audiovisual BCI. These findings indicate that the detection accuracy of P300 is significantly correlated with the level of consciousness, etiology, and prognosis of patients. P300 can be used to represent the preservation level of consciousness in clinical neurophysiology and predict the possibility of recovery in patients with disorders of consciousness.

Since 2000, overloaded trucks have caused more than 50 bridges to collapse in China. In an effort to ensure the structural safety and extend the service life of the highway infrastructure, the Chinese government has proposed a series of policies in the past decade to mitigate truck overloading. This study aimed at investigating the effects of China’s recently revised toll-by-weight policy on truck overloading behavior and bridge infrastructure damage using weigh-in-motion data that spanned seven years (January 2011 to March 2018) and two successive toll-by-weight policies (with the new one implemented from August 2016), wherein truck data were measured from a typical national freeway segment. We first compared truck traffic volumes, compositions, and weight distributions under the initial and revised toll-by-weight policies. Next, we compared bridge infrastructure performance with respect to safety and fatigue based on the overloaded truck traffic observed under the initial and revised toll-by-weight policies. The results indicated that the revised toll-by-weight policy, which uses a stepwise incremental fee structure based on vehicle weight, was more effective at controlling truck overloading behavior and reducing bridge infrastructure damage than the initial toll-by-weight policy. Under the current policy, average daily truck volumes, overloaded truck proportions, and maximum truck weights decreased significantly. Concurrently, extreme and equivalent load effects for safety and fatigue assessments, respectively, decreased by an average of 20% for small- to medium-span bridges. Despite these noted improvements, overloaded truck traffic persisted, with loads often exceeding bridge design levels. This study’s findings can support future efforts by the Chinese government to further refine their toll-by-weight policies and subsequently ensure a safe and viable transportation network.

For patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC), such as vegetative state (VS) and minimally conscious state (MCS), detecting and assessing the residual cognitive functions of the brain remain challenging. Emotion-related cognitive functions are difficult to detect in patients with DOC using motor response-based clinical assessment scales such as the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) because DOC patients have motor impairments and are unable to provide sufficient motor responses for emotion-related communication. In this study, we proposed an EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI) system for emotion recognition in patients with DOC. Eight patients with DOC (5 VS and 3 MCS) and eight healthy controls participated in the BCI-based experiment. During the experiment, two movie clips flashed (appearing and disappearing) eight times with a random interstimulus interval between flashes to evoke P300 potentials. The subjects were instructed to focus on the crying or laughing movie clip and to count the flashes of the corresponding movie clip cued by instruction. The BCI system performed online P300 detection to determine which movie clip the patients responsed to and presented the result as feedback. Three of the eight patients and all eight healthy controls achieved online accuracies based on P300 detection that were significantly greater than chance level. P300 potentials were observed in the EEG signals from the three patients. These results indicated the three patients had abilities of emotion recognition and command following. Through spectral analysis, common spatial pattern (CSP) and differential entropy (DE) features in the delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands were employed to classify the EEG signals during the crying and laughing movie clips. Two patients and all eight healthy controls achieved offline accuracies significantly greater than chance levels in the spectral analysis. Furthermore, stable topographic distribution patterns of CSP and DE features were observed in both the healthy subjects and these two patients. Our results suggest that cognitive experiments may be conducted using BCI systems in patients with DOC despite the inability of such patients to provide sufficient behavioral responses.

This paper presents a fully integrated linear Hall sensor by means of 0.8 μm high voltage complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. This monolithic Hall sensor chip features a highly sensitive horizontal switched Hall plate and an efficient signal conditioner using dynamic offset cancellation technique. An improved cross-like Hall plate achieves high magnetic sensitivity and low offset. A new spinning current modulator stabilizes the quiescent output voltage and improves the reliability of the signal conditioner. The tested results show that at the 5 V supply voltage, the maximum Hall output voltage of the monolithic Hall sensor microsystem, is up to ±2.1 V and the linearity of Hall output voltage is higher than 99% in the magnetic flux density range from ±5 mT to ±175 mT. The output equivalent residual offset is 0.48 mT and the static power consumption is 20 mW.

With the development of new technologies in transcriptome and epigenetics, RNAs have been identified to play more and more important roles in life processes. Consequently, various methods have been proposed to assess the biological functions of RNAs and thus classify them functionally, among which comparative study of RNA structures is perhaps the most important one. To measure the structural similarity of RNAs and classify them, we propose a novel three dimensional (3D) graphical representation of RNA secondary structure, in which an RNA secondary structure is first transformed into a characteristic sequence based on chemical property of nucleic acids; a dynamic 3D graph is then constructed for the characteristic sequence; and lastly a numerical characterization of the 3D graph is used to represent the RNA secondary structure. We tested our algorithm on three datasets: (1) Dataset I consisting of nine RNA secondary structures of viruses, (2) Dataset II consisting of complex RNA secondary structures including pseudo-knots, and (3) Dataset III consisting of 18 non-coding RNA families. We also compare our method with other nine existing methods using Dataset II and III. The results demonstrate that our method is better than other methods in similarity measurement and classification of RNA secondary structures.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have demonstrated that transplantation of adipose-derived stem cell (ADSC) can improve cardiac function in animal models of myocardial infarction (MI). However, the mechanisms underlying the beneficial effect are not fully understood. In this study, we characterized the paracrine effect of transplanted ADSC and investigated its relative importance versus direct differentiation in ADSC transplantation mediated cardiac repair. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: MI was experimentally induced in mice by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery. Either human ADSC, conditioned medium (CM) collected from the same amount of ADSC or control medium was injected into the peri-infarct region immediately after MI. Compared with the control group, both ADSC and ADSC-CM significantly reduced myocardial infarct size and improved cardiac function. The therapeutic efficacy of ADSC was moderately superior to ADSC-CM. ADSC-CM significantly reduced cardiomyocyte apoptosis in the infarct border zone, to a similar degree with ADSC treatment. ADSC enhanced angiogenesis in the infarct border zone, but to a stronger degree than that seen in the ADSC-CM treatment. ADSC was able to differentiate to endothelial cell and smooth muscle cell in post-MI heart; these ADSC-derived vascular cells amount to about 9% of the enhanced angiogenesis. No cardiomyocyte differentiated from ADSC was found. CONCLUSIONS: ADSC-CM is sufficient to improve cardiac function of infarcted hearts. The therapeutic function of ADSC transplantation is mainly induced by paracrine-mediated cardioprotection and angiogenesis, while ADSC differentiation contributes a minor benefit by being involved in angiogenesis. Highlights 1 ADSC-CM is sufficient to exert a therapeutic potential. 2. ADSC was able to differentiate to vascular cells but not cardiomyocyte. 3. ADSC derived vascular cells amount to about 9% of the enhanced angiogenesis. 4. Paracrine effect is the major mechanism of ADSC therapeutic function for MI.
