Abstract Methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) is the most common inborn organic acidemia, presenting multisystemic complications. Uric acid may have neurotoxic or neuroprotective effects due to its antioxidant or pro-inflammatory properties; however, its role in MMA brain injury remains unclear. We examined the correlation between the serum uric acid levels and brain imaging features of MMA. Data were collected from a cross-sectional study of 216 patients with MMA and 216 healthy matched controls aged 0–5 years in China. Serum uric acid levels were measured, and magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography findings were retrieved from hospital records. Overall, 74.1% patients had brain abnormalities. Patients in the MMA group with abnormal brain imaging had higher serum uric acid levels than those in the MMA normal brain imaging and control groups. The area under the curve of serum uric acid was 0.74, 0.91, and 0.93 for MMA diagnosis with abnormal brain images, basal ganglia changes, and globus pallidus changes, respectively. Abstract Background Isolated methylmalonic acidemia, an autosomal recessive disorder of propionate metabolism, is usually caused by mutations in the methylmalonyl-CoA mutase gene (mut-type). Because no universal consensus was made on whether mut-type methylmalonic acidemia should be included in newborn screening (NBS), we aimed to compare the outcome of this disorder detected by NBS with that detected clinically and investigate the influence of NBS on the disease course. Design & methods In this study, 168 patients with mut-type methylmalonic acidemia diagnosed by NBS were compared to 210 patients diagnosed after disease onset while NBS was not performed. Clinical data of these patients from 7 metabolic centers in China were analyzed retrospectively, including initial manifestations, biochemical metabolites, the responsiveness of vitamin B12 therapy, and gene variation, to explore different factors on the long-term outcome. Recently developed ‘super’ rice cultivars with greater yield potentials often suffer from the problem of poor grain filling, especially in inferior spikelets. Here, we studied the activities of enzymes related to starch metabolism in rice stems and grains, and the microstructures related to carbohydrate accumulation and transportation to investigate the effects of different water regimes on grain filling. Two ‘super’ rice cultivars were grown under two irrigation regimes of well-watered (WW) and alternate wetting and moderate soil drying (AWMD). Compared with the WW treatment, the activities of ADP glucose pyrophosphorylase (AGPase), starch synthase (StSase) and starch branching enzyme (SBE), and the accumulation of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) in the stems before heading were significantly improved, and more starch granules were stored in the stems in the AWMD treatment. After heading, the activities of α-amylase, β-amylase, sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) and sucrose synthase in the synthetic direction (SSs) were increased in the stems to promote the remobilization of NSCs for grain filling under AWMD. During grain filling, the enzymatic activities of sucrose synthase in the cleavage direction (SSc), AGPase, StSase and SBE in the inferior spikelets were increased, which promoted grain filling, especially for the inferior spikelets under AWMD. However, there were no significant differences in vascular microstructures. The grain yield and grain weight could be improved by 13.1 and 7.5%, respectively, by optimizing of the irrigation regime. We concluded that the low activities of key enzymes in carbon metabolism is the key limitation for the poor grain filling, as opposed to the vascular microstructures, and AWMD can increase the amount of NSC accumulation in the stems before heading, improve the utilization rate of NSCs after heading, and increase the grain filling, especially in the inferior spikelets, by altering the activities of key enzymes in carbon metabolism.

Abstract This study aims to explore the formation mechanism of starch structure and the relationships between the appearance quality and starch structure of soft rice under different nitrogen levels. We comprehensively investigated the physiological aspects, starch structure variations, and appearance quality of soft rice in response to different nitrogen applications. The results showed that under the moderate nitrogen application (270 N), the soft rice exhibited the highest AGPase activity, the highest large‐starch granule content, and the lowest chalkiness. Under the highest nitrogen application (360 N), the soft rice exhibited the highest GBSS and DBE activity and the lowest SBE activity, the highest content of long‐branched amylopectin, the lowest relative crystallinity, the fewest ordered structures, the most amorphous structures, the largest semi‐crystalline lamellar thicknesses, and the highest transparency of chalk‐free rice. In conclusion, moderate nitrogen fertilization (270 N) improved the AGPase activity, which leaded to fuller starch granules and more compact endosperm in soft rice. Thus, the grain chalkiness of soft rice decreased. Continuous nitrogen application (0‐360 N) constantly increased the GBSS and DBE activity and reduced the SBE activity in soft rice, leading a lower content of short‐branched amylopectin and a higher content of long‐branched amylopectin in soft rice. Thus, the relative crystallinity and ordered structures of soft rice were reduced. These structures improved the transparency phenotype of soft rice.

Crop straw boards, a novel nursery material, has proven effective for cultivating dense, young rice seedlings suitable for mechanized transplanting, thereby saving labor. However, under high-density nursery conditions, the biomass accumulation and yield formation in rice vary with different seedling ages, necessitating exploration of optimal seeding densities and seedling ages to achieve high yields. This study aims to determine the appropriate seeding densities and seedling ages using crop straw boards to maximize rice yield. Over two years, field studies were conducted using crop straw boards for rice cultivation at seeding densities of 150, 200, 250, 300, and 350 g/tray (labeled as D1, D2, D3, D4, and D5) and seedling ages of 10, 15, 20, and 25 days (labeled as A1, A2, A3, and A4).The results indicated that D4A2 significantly enhanced tiller number, dry matter accumulation, and photosynthetic capacity, resulting in a yield increase of 2.89% compared to the conventional method of D1A3. High-density and short-aged seedlings cultivated with crop straw boards can enhance rice yield by improving photosynthetic capacity and crop quality. This study emphasizes the importance of using crop straw boards for rice nursery practices, as well as selecting the appropriate seeding densities and seedling ages for optimizing rice production.

Summary: Blood microbiome signatures in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) remain unclear. We profile blood microbiome using 16S rRNA gene sequencing in 77 controls and 64 children with new-onset T1D, and compared it with the gut and oral microbiomes. The blood microbiome of patients with T1D is characterized by increased diversity and perturbed microbial features, with a significant increase in potentially pathogenic bacteria compared with controls. Thirty-six representative genera of blood microbiome were identified by random forest analysis, providing strong discriminatory power for T1D with an AUC of 0.82. PICRUSt analysis suggested that bacteria capable of inducing inflammation were more likely to enter the bloodstream in T1D. The overlap of the gut and oral microbiome with the blood microbiome implied potential translocation of bacteria from the gut and oral cavity to the bloodstream. Our study raised the necessity of further mechanistic investigations into the roles of blood microbiome in T1D.

Objective To explore changes in prevalence characteristics and pathogen spectrum of severe hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in Henan province before and after launching vaccination of enterovirus 71 (EV71) vaccine for developing strategies on HFMD prevention and control. MethodsThe data on all HFMD cases registered in Henan province from 2014 through 2020 were extracted from the Infectious Disease Report Information Management System of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Descriptive statistics was performed on the data to assess changes in constituent ratio of and distribution of pathogens detected in the severe HFMD cases before and after of the launch of EV71 vaccination from 2017 in the province. ResultsDuring 2014 to 2020, totally 13 535 severe HFMD cases were reported in the province, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.58:1 and the most (97.34%, 13 175) of the cases were children under the age of 5 years. A unimodal pattern throughout the year was observed in the incidence of severe HFMD, with the peak season mainly occurring from April to July and 75.53% (10 223) of the registered severe cases occurred during the season. The ratio of severe cases decreased significantly from 3.19% (10 948/343 585) for the period of 2014 – 2016 to 0.93% (2 587/278 075) for the period of 2017 – 2020 with the launch of EV71 vaccination (χ2 = 3672.874, P < 0.001). For the severe HFMD cases reported during 2017 – 2020, the proportion of the cases of one- and two-year-old decreased significantly from 47.23% to 42.83% (χ2 = 16.311, P1 < 0.001) and from 25.57% to 22.84% (χ2 = 8.255, P2 = 0.004); but the proportion of the cases occurred in preschool care facilities increased significantly from 9.13% to 16.24% (χ2 = 112.359, P < 0.001). Following the promotion of EV71 vaccination among the public, the detection rate of EV71 among the severe HFMD cases decreased from 65.14% to 29.63%, while that of other enteroviruses increased from 27.49% to 56.13%, indicating that other enteroviruses became dominant serotypes for pathogens of HFMD epidemic. ConclusionThe ratio of severe cases among registered HFMD cases had significantly decreased after the launch of the EV71 vaccination in Henan province and the dominant pathogen of HFMD changed from EV71 to other enteroviruses. The results suggest that EV71 vaccination ought to be promoted among key populations and in peak season to prevent severe HFMD epidemic.

Abstract Echovirus 25 (E25), a member of the Enterovirus B (EV-B) species, can cause aseptic meningitis (AM), viral meningitis (VM), and acute flaccid paralysis (AFP). However, systematic studies on the molecular epidemiology of E25, especially those concerning its evolution and recombination, are lacking. In this study, 18 strains of E25, isolated from seven provinces of China between 2009 and 2018, were collected based on the Chinese hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) surveillance network, and 95 sequences downloaded from GenBank were also screened. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of 113 full-length VP1 sequences worldwide, globally occurring E25 strains were classified into 9 genotypes (A–I), and genotype F was the dominant genotype in the Chinese mainland. The average nucleotide substitution rate of E25 was 6.08 × 10–3 substitutions/site/year, and six important transmission routes were identified worldwide. Seventeen recombination patterns were determined, of which genotype F can be divided into 9 recombination patterns. A positive selector site was found in the capsid protein region of genotype F. Recombination analysis and pressure selection analysis for genotype F showed multiple recombination patterns and evolution characteristics, which may be responsible for it being the dominant genotype in the Chinese mainland. This study provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent prevention and control of E25.

ABSTRACTStochastic weather generators create time series that reproduce key weather dynamics present in long-term observations. The dataset detailed herein is a large-scale gridded parameterization for CLImate GENerator (CLIGEN) that fills spatial gaps in the coverage of existing regional CLIGEN parameterizations, thereby obtaining near-global availability of combined coverages. This dataset primarily covers countries north of 40° latitude with 0.25° spatial resolution. Various CLIGEN parameters were estimated based on 20-year records from four popular global climate products. Precipitation parameters were statistically downscaled to estimate point-scale values, while point-scale temperature and solar radiation parameters were approximated by direct calculation from high-resolution datasets. Surrogate parameter values were used in some cases, such as with wind parameters. Cross-validation was done to assess the downscaling approach for six precipitation parameters using known point-scale values from ground-based CLIGEN parameterizations. These parameter values were derived from daily accumulation records at 7,281 stations and high temporal resolution records at 609 stations. Two sensitive parameters, monthly average storm accumulation and maximum 30-minute intensity, were shown have RMSE values of 1.48 mm and 4.67 mm hr−1, respectively. Cumulative precipitation and the annual number of days with precipitation occurrence were both within 5% of ground-based parameterizations, effectively improving climate data availability.

This study investigated the differences in appearance quality among different soft japonica rice varieties based on grain shape, with a particular focus on the broad-ovate soft japonica rice varieties Nanjing 9108 and Nanjing 5718, as well as the slender soft japonica rice varieties Shangshida 19 and Jiahe 218, all sourced from the Yangtze River Delta. The results showed that the slender soft japonica rice varieties exhibited significantly superior appearance quality compared to the broad-ovate varieties. In the case of superior grains, the chalky grain rate of the broad-ovate soft japonica rice was 4307.79 percent higher than that of the slender varieties, and the degree of chalkiness was 8275.00 percent higher. For inferior grains, the chalky grain rate of the broad-ovate soft japonica rice was 238.34 percent higher than the slender varieties, and the degree of chalkiness was 339.96 percent higher. In contrast to the slender soft japonica rice, the broad-ovate varieties had a lower percentage of high-weight grains and a higher percentage of low-weight grains. Compared to the broad-ovate soft japonica rice, the slender varieties exhibited a faster grain-filling rate and shorter effective grain-filling days. Correlation analysis revealed that chalkiness had a significant negative correlation with grain length and aspect ratio. Simultaneously, chalkiness also showed a positive correlation with the number of effective grain-filling days while demonstrating a negative correlation with both the maximum and average grain-filling rates. The slender soft japonica rice exhibited a lower likelihood of developing chalkiness and higher grain-filling efficiency and developed a favorable grain weight distribution. These distinctive attributes significantly contribute to the superior appearance quality of the slender japonica soft rice.

Leptochloa chinensis (L.) Nees is a troublesome rice weed. We collected 242 L. chinensis populations from rice fields in eastern China and studied the duration of seed dormancy and the seed germination ability at different temperatures. All L. chinensis populations studied exhibited seed dormancy. The periods required to reach 50% germination under optimal conditions were 31–235 days, with an average of 96 days. None of the populations germinated at 15 °C. Under constant temperatures of 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C, the average germination percentages of 242 populations were 0%, 71%, 79%, and 60% at 2 days after treatment (DAT), and were 56%, 84%, 88%, and 88% at 14 DAT, respectively. The duration of seed dormancy, as well as the germination ability of seeds, were significantly (p < 0.05) influenced by the agricultural region and the longitude and latitude of the collection locations. Under constant temperatures of 20 to 35 °C, the average germination percentages of seeds collected from transplanted rice fields were significantly higher than those collected from direct-seeded fields. This is the first study on seed germination biology of L. chinensis with multiple populations systematically collected from rice fields on a regional scale.

Rational nitrogen (N) application can enhance yield and improve grain eating quality in rice. However, excessive N input can deteriorate grain eating quality and aggravate environmental pollution, while reduced N application (RN) decreases rice yield. Reduced N application with dense planting (RNDP) is recommended for maintaining rice yield and improving N use efficiency. However, the effects of RNDP on the rice grain eating quality and starch structure and properties remain unclear. A two-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of RNDP on the rice yield, grain eating quality, and starch structure and properties. Compared to conventional N treatment, RN decreased significantly the rice yield, while RNDP achieved a comparable grain yield. Both the RN and RNDP treatments improved significantly the rice eating quality. The high eating quality of RNDP was attributed to increased gel consistency, pasting viscosity, and stickiness after cooking as well as decreased protein content. A further analysis of starch structure and properties revealed that RNDP decreased the relative crystallinity, lamellar intensity, gelatinization enthalpy, and retrogradation enthalpy of starch. Therefore, RNDP achieved a stable rice yield and enhanced rice eating quality. These findings provide valuable insights into obtaining optimal quality and consistent yield in rice production under reduced N conditions.

Abstract Biochar can change the availability and morphology of soil Cd. However, the influence of biochar on Cd chemical form and subcellular fraction in rice is poorly understood, particularly under different irrigation methods. A pot experiment of biochar application combined with two irrigation methods (continuous flooding and intermittent irrigation, CF and II) was conducted. The Cd accumulation, chemical form and subcellular fraction in rice organs and the associated physiological responses were examined. Biochar significantly reduced soil available Cd (30.85–47.26% and 32.35–52.35%) under CF and II but increased the Cd content (30.4–63.88% and 13.03–18.59%) in brown rice. Additionally, the Cd content in shoots/grains under II was higher than that under CF. Biochar elevated the Cd soluble fraction in roots while lowered the cell wall fraction under both irrigation methods, whereas the opposite result was observed in leaves. Biochar increased water-, ethanol-, and NaCl-extractable Cd in roots meanwhile increased ethanol-extractable Cd in leaves under both irrigation methods. Moreover, the total amount of water-, ethanol-, and NaCl-extractable Cd in rice roots was higher under II than under CF. Related hormones and antioxidant enzymes may also be involved in biochar-mediated Cd accumulation in rice grains. Thus, changes in Cd chemical form and subcellular fraction in the root and leaf are the main mechanisms of biochar-induced rice grains Cd accumulation. Graphical Abstract

Microplastics (MPs)/nanoplastics (NPs), as a source and vector of pathogenic bacteria, are widely distributed in the natural environments. Here, we investigated the combined effects of polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs) and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on testicular function in mice for the first time. 24 male mice were randomly assigned into 4 groups, control, PS-NPs, LPS, and PS-NPs + LPS, respectively. Histological alterations of the testes were observed in mice exposed to PS-NPs, LPS or PS-NPs + LPS. Total sperm count, the levels of testosterone in plasma and testes, the expression levels of steroidogenic acute regulatory (StAR) decreased more remarkable in testes of mice treated with PS-NPs and LPS than the treatment with LPS or PS-NPs alone. Compared with PS-NPs treatment, LPS treatment induced more sever inflammatory response in testes of mice. Moreover, PS-NPs combined with LPS treatment increased the expression of these inflammatory factors more significantly than LPS treatment alone. In addition, PS-NPs or LPS treatment induced oxidative stress in testes of mice, but their combined effect is not significantly different from LPS treatment alone. These results suggest that PS-NPs exacerbate LPS-induced testicular dysfunction. Our results provide new evidence for the threats to male reproductive function induced by both NPs and bacterial infection in human health.

PurposeAnalyze the relationship between changes in the proportion of X-chromosome deletions and clinical manifestations in children with Turner syndrome (TS).MethodsX-chromosome number abnormalities in 8,635 children with growth retardation were identified using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Meanwhile, the relationship between the proportion of X-chromosome deletions and the clinical manifestations of TS, such as face and body phenotype, cardiovascular, renal, and other comorbidities in children with TS was analyzed.ResultsA total of 389 children had X-chromosome number abnormalities, with an average age at diagnosis of 9.2 years. There was a significant increase in diagnoses around the ages of 3 and 7 years and highest number of diagnoses at 10 years of age. 130 with XO (complete loss of an X-chromosome), 205 with XO/XX, 8 with XO/XXX, 23 with XO/XX/XXX, 19 with XO/XY, and 4 with XO/XY/XYY. Body and facial phenotypes increased with higher mosaicism proportions, with a relatively high correlation shown with Pearson correlation analysis (r = 0.26, p = 1.7e-06). The incidence of congenital heart malformations was 25.56%, mainly involving a bicuspid aortic valve, and were more common in patients who had complete loss of an X-chromosome. However, this relationship was not present for renal disease (p = 0.26), central nervous system, thyroid, or liver disease.ConclusionThe mosaicism (XO/XX) is the most common karyotype of TS in screened cases. The phenotypes in children with TS may increase with the proportion of X-chromosome deletions, but the renal disease and comorbidities did not show the same characteristics.

IntroductionPineal cysts have long been considered a benign intracranial variation. However, in our clinical practice, it has been observed that some children with central precocious puberty (CPP) who have pineal cysts experience rapid progression in adolescent development. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of CPP in girls, leading to more diagnoses of CPP among children with pineal cysts. Despite this, there is no consensus regarding whether pineal cysts contribute to CPP as one of its organic factors. This study aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics of pineal cysts in children with CPP and explore the potential effects of pineal cysts on puberty development.MethodsThis single-center study retrospectively analyzed clinical data from girls aged 3 to 10 years who underwent head/pituitary magnetic resonance imaging at the Children’s Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University between 2019 and 2022. The study categorized the detection rates of pineal cysts based on systematic disease classification and compared the rates of cyst detection between girls diagnosed with CPP and those without CPP. Subsequently, CPP-diagnosed girls with pineal cysts were examined. Among CPP-diagnosed girls meeting the study’s criteria, those with pineal cysts formed the ‘cyst group,’ while those without cysts were matched in a 1:1 ratio based on age and body mass index to form the ‘non-cyst group.’ Comparative analyses were conducted to assess the clinical characteristics between these two groups. CPP-diagnosed girls with cysts were further subdivided into three groups according to cyst size (≤5 mm, 5.1–9.9 mm, and ≥10 mm) to investigate potential differences in clinical characteristics among these subgroups. The study involved an analysis of clinical data from girls diagnosed with CPP and included imaging follow-ups to explore the progression of pineal cysts over time.ResultsAmong the 23,245 girls who underwent head/pituitary magnetic resonance imaging scans, the detection rate of pineal cysts was 3.6% (837/23,245), with most cases being associated with endocrine diseases. The detection rate of pineal cysts in CPP patients was 6.4% (262/4099), which was significantly higher than the 3.0% (575/19,146) in patients without CPP. In comparison to the non-cyst group, the cyst group exhibited statistically significant increases in estradiol levels, peak luteinizing hormone (LH) levels, peak LH/follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) ratios, uterine body length, and cervix length (P < 0.001). As cyst size increased, there were significant rises in LH peak, peak LH/FSH ratio, uterine body length, and cervical length (P < 0.01). Estradiol levels and left ovarian volume also showed an increasing trend (P < 0.05). Among girls who underwent follow-up imaging, 26.3% (5/19) exhibited an increase in cyst size.ConclusionPineal cysts are relatively common in children with CPP. They may affect the pubertal development process, with larger cysts correlating to faster pubertal development. Therefore, the authors hypothesize that pineal cysts may trigger CPP in some cases, especially when the cysts are larger than 5 mm in size, as indicated by our data.

Background: Acute severe hepatitis with unknown aetiology in children (ASHep-UA) has become a global health alert. This article reported clinicopathological characteristics of 3 probable ASHep-UA cases. Methods: We respectively collected serological data and liver biopsies of 3 suspected cases of ASHep-UA. Neutralizing antibodies titer for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variants were determined by virus neutralization test (VNT). Histological assessment, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human adenoviruses (HAdV), adeno-associated virus (AAV2), human herpes virus type 6 (HHV-6) were performed to identify possible aetiologies. Results: Remarkable elevation of transaminase (median ALT level, 1100 IU/liter; median AST level, 500 IU/liter) were revealed with undetectable hepatitis A-E and non-hepatotropic virus in both sera and tissues. Weakness, jaundice, pale stools and splenomegaly were observed. Interestingly, two individuals had SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variants infection. Histologically, moderate or severe lobular necroinflammation, active interface hepatitis and portal inflammatory infiltrate with lymphocytic, plasma cells, neutrophils and eosinophilic cells were noted. Conclusions: The exact aetiology of ASHep-UA was still unknown. By reporting the 3 probable cases, we expect to enrich the clinical experience in diagnosis and treatment of ASHep-UA as well as the pathological characteristics.

Abstract Background Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been identified as a risk factor for obesity in both children and adolescents. However, the mechanisms underlying the relationship between ADHD and obesity are still unclear. This study aimed to test a theoretical model of whether anxiety/depression is an intermediary factor in the ADHD-obesity relationship. Methods Data were derived from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), a principal source of information on the health of the civilian noninstitutionalized population of the United States. A total of 35,108 adolescents aged 12-17 years old from 2010-2015 NHIS and 2016-2018 NHIS representing 46,550,729 individuals in the weighted population, had a parent-reported previous ADHD diagnosis, emotional problems, and height and weight data. Mediation analyses were used to explore whether anxiety/depression is an intermediary factor in the relationship between ever having ADHD and obesity. Mediation analyses were performed using multiple logistic regressions. Results The findings showed that ADHD was a predictor of obesity. This relationship was partially mediated by depression(2010-2015: β=0.28, 95%CI:0.13-0.43; 2016-2018: β=0.26, 95%CI:0.03-0.49), as well as anxiety (2010-2015: β=0.28, 95%CI:0.18-0.38). Conclusions Our study suggests the hypothetical role of depression and anxiety as underlying mechanisms in the association between ever having ADHD and obesity in adolescents. When treating children with ADHD, clinicians need to be particularly attentive to whether they show emotional problems and use interventions to eliminate anxiety/depression to protect against obesity.

Methods We took Parthenium hysterophorus as a case study to predict its potential invasion risk using climate, terrain, and human activity variables. First, a generalized joint attribute model (GJAM) was constructed using the occurrence of P. hysterophorus and its 27 closely related species in Taiwan, given it is widely distributed in Taiwan. Based on the output correlation values, two positively correlated species (Cardiospermum halicacabum and Portulaca oleracea) and one negatively correlated species (Crassocephalum crepidioides) were selected as indicator species. Second, the distributions of P. hysterophorus and its indicator species in the study area were predicted separately using an ensemble model (EM). Third, when selecting indicator species to construct indicator SDMs, two treatments (indicator species with positive correlation only, or both positive and negative correlation) were considered. The indicator species' EM predictions were overlaid using a weighted average method, and a better indicator SDMs prediction result was selected by comparison. Finally, the EM prediction result of P. hysterophorus was used to optimize the indicator SDMs result by a maximum overlay. Results The optimized indicator SDMs prediction showed an expanded range beyond the current geographic range compared to EM and the thresholds for predicting key environmental variables were wider. It also reinforced the human activities' influence on the potential distribution of P. hysterophorus. Main Conclusions For invasive plants with expanding ranges, information about indicator species distribution can be borrowed as a barometer for areas not currently invaded. The optimized indicator SDMs allow for more efficient potential invasion risk prediction. On this basis, invasive plants can be prevented earlier.

This study conducted a two-year field artificial intelligence (AI) greenhouse rice planting experiment with different canopy humidity (normal humidity, NH; high humidity, and HH) and irrigation regimes (continuous flooding, CF; drought cultivation, DC; alternate wetting-drying, AWD) to test whether high canopy humidity from heading to maturity deteriorates rice grain quality, whether appropriate water management can alleviate these adverse effects, and the related mechanisms. The results showed that compared with NH, HH significantly decreased the head rice rate while increasing the protein, amino acid, amylopectin, amylose, and chalkiness. Moreover, HH significantly decreased the peak viscosity, breakdown, and number of small starch granules, while increasing the setback, number of large starch granules, relative crystallinity, gelatinization temperature, and enthalpy. Under NH and HH, AWD treatment resulted in a higher head rice rate, peak viscosity, breakdown, key enzyme activities of starch synthesis, amylose, amylopecan, relative crystallinity, small starch granules, gelatinization temperature, and enthalpy than DC and CF treatments, while lower chalkiness, setback, protein, amino acid, and large starch granules were observed. HH increased the chalkiness by promoting the formation of large starch granules, thus reducing the milling quality. The increase in amylose and relative crystallinity further causes HH to deteriorate the cooking and eating quality. AWD could alleviate the deterioration of rice grain milling, appearance, and eating quality caused by HH by improving starch granules.

Nitrogen (N) rate reduction and simplified fertilization can mitigate environmental impacts and reduce the involvement of manual labor in rice (Oryza sativa L.) production. Controlled-release urea (CRU) has been recommended as an effective alternative technique to conventional urea fertilization, and it can improve rice yield and N use efficiency (NUE) and reduce labor costs. However, the information on the effects of one-time fertilization with CRU on maintaining yield and improving NUE under reduced chemical N conditions is limited. In this study, controlled-release bulk blending fertilizer (CRF), consisting of CRU with release periods of 40 and 100 days, mixed with compound fertilizer, was applied as basal fertilizer. Increased ~20% plant density (ID) and rapeseed cake fertilizer (RC, increase 20% organic N) were combined with CRF, respectively. The N treatments with 20% chemical N reduction were as follows: reduced N fertilizer (RNF), CRF, CRF+ID, and CRF+RC. In addition, a conventional split fertilizer application with 300 kg ha-1 N was applied as the control (CK). Rice yield and its components, dry matter accumulation, N uptake, and NUE were investigated to evaluate whether one-time N fertilization realized stable yield and high NUE under reduced 20% chemical N conditions. Compared with CK, the CRF+RC treatment exhibited a comparable grain yield, while the other reduced N treatments (RNF, CRF, and CRF+ID) had a lower grain yield. Moreover, CRF+ID exhibited a higher rice grain yield than RNF or CRF under the same N level. Irrespective of exogenous organic N, CRF+RC exhibited significantly higher NUE than CK. The CRF+ID treatment showed a significantly higher N partial factor productivity (PFN) than CK but comparable N agronomic efficiency (NAE) and N recovery efficiency (NRE). Therefore, a one-time fertilizer application of CRF+RC maintained grain yield and improved the NUE while reducing the N rate and fertilization times, demonstrating its potential application in rice production.

Abstract Background Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a common chronic systemic disease that threatens the health of children worldwide. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is the most severe acute complication of diabetes and can lead to death. This study aimed to explore the epidemiological features, clinical manifestations, and risk factors for DKA in children and adolescents newly diagnosed with T1DM in the Department of Endocrinology of the Children’s Hospital of Henan Province. Methods Medical records of 683 children and adolescents newly diagnosed with T1DM in our center from March 2014 to November 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. The data included the general condition, laboratory indexes, and clinical symptoms. The patients were divided into three groups according to age: Group I, 0–3 years; Group II, 4–9 years; and Group III, 10–18 years. Results The incidence of DKA was 62.96% and was highest in Group I. Group I had the lowest C-peptide and hemoglobin A1c, but the highest blood glucose at first diagnosis, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels, hospitalization lengths, and medical costs. 25.5% of the children were delayed in diagnosis. Logistic regression analysis showed that elevated HbA1c levels and hyperglycemia were independent risk factors for DKA. On the other hand, C-peptide and 25- hydroxyvitamin D were protective factors for DKA. Conclusions The incidence of DKA among children and adolescents in the Henan Province is very high. Moreover, DKA can be easily delayed in diagnosis. Newly diagnosed infants with T1DM are more likely to present with DKA, suffer more severe metabolic disorders, endure longer hospital stays, and accrue higher medical costs.

Abstract Background Growth chart is a valuable clinical tool to monitor the growth and nutritional status of children. A growth chart widely used in China is based on the merged data sets of national surveys in 2005. We aimed to establish an up-to-date, complete growth curve for urban Chinese children and adolescents with a full range of ages. Methods Using data collected in a large-scale, cross-sectional study (Prevalence and Risk factors for Obesity and Diabetes in Youth (PRODY), 2017–2019), we analyzed 201,098 urban children aged 3 to 18 years from 11 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities that are geographically representative of China. All participants underwent physical examinations. Sex-specific percentiles of height-for-age and weight-for-age were constructed by Generalized Additive Models for Location Scale and Shape (GAMLSS) model. We also compared the median values of height-for-age or weight-for-age between our growth chart and the established growth reference using Welch-Satterthwaite T-Test. Results Consistent with the established growth reference, we observed that the P50 percentile of height-for-age reached plateaus at the age of 15 years (172 cm) and 14 years (160 cm) for boys and girls, respectively. In addition, boys aged 10 ~ 14 years and girls aged 10 ~ 12 years exhibited the most dramatic weight difference compared to those of other age groups (19.5 kg and 10.3 kg, respectively). However, our growth chart had higher median values of weight-for-age and height-for-age than the established growth reference with mean increases in weight-for-age of 1.36 kg and 1.17 kg for boys and girls, respectively, and in height-for-age of 2.9 cm and 2.6 cm for boys and girls, respectively. Conclusions Our updated growth chart can serve as a reliable reference to assess the growth and nutritional status in urban Chinese children throughout the entire childhood.

Abstract Background Palbociclib was the only available cyclin‐dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitor in China until very recently, and its effect has not been systemically evaluated among Chinese patients. This study aims to assess the efficacy, safety and patient‐reported outcomes (PROs) of palbociclib plus endocrine therapy (ET) in real‐world China. Methods An ambispective cohort study was conducted on patients with advanced HR+HER2− breast cancer who received palbociclib between July 2018, and November 2020 and were enrolled from 12 hospitals. Treatment patterns, survival outcomes, and safety events were documented, and PROs (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire‐Core 30 items [EORTC QLQ‐C30] and EuroQoL 5 dimensions [EQ‐5D]) were analyzed. The Kaplan–Meier method was used to visualize and estimate the median progression‐free survival (mPFS). Log‐rank tests, Cox regressions, t tests, and chi‐square tests were performed for comparison. Results A total of 190 patients (median follow‐up of 18.0 months) were enrolled. Palbociclib was mostly combined with aromatase inhibitors (66.3%), fulvestrant (32.6%), and tamoxifen (1.1%). The mPFS values were 21.0, 14.0, and 7.0 months with palbociclib administered in first‐ (n = 83), second‐ (n = 41) and subsequent‐line settings (n = 66), respectively. Ticlopidine exerts its anti-platelet effects mainly by antagonizing platelet p2y12 receptors. Previously, a few studies have shown that ticlopidine can induce liver injury, but the exact mechanism of hepatotoxicity remains unclear. Oxidative stress, metabolic disorders, hepatocyte apoptosis, lipid peroxidation, and inflammatory responses can all lead to hepatic liver damage, which can cause hepatotoxicity. In this study, in order to deeply explore the potential molecular mechanisms of ticlopidine -induced hepatotoxicity, we used zebrafish as a model organism to comprehensively evaluate the hepatotoxicity of ticlopidine and its associated mechanism. Three days post-fertilization, zebrafish larvae were exposed to varying concentrations (1.5, 1.75 and 2 μg/mL) of ticlopidine for 72 h, in contrast, adult zebrafish were exposed exposure to 4 μg/mL of ticlopidine for 28 days. Ticlopidine-exposed zebrafish larvae showed changes in liver morphology, shortened body length, and delayed development of the swim bladder development. Liver tissues of ticlopidine-exposed zebrafish larvae and adults stained with Hematoxylin & Eosin revealed vacuolization and increased cellular interstitial spaces in liver tissues. Furthermore, using Oil Red O and periodic acid-Schiff staining methods and evaluating different metabolic enzymes of ticlopidine-exposed zebrafish larvae and adults suggested abnormal liver metabolism and liver injury in both ticlopidine-exposed zebrafish larvae and adults. Ticlopidine also significantly elevated inflammation and oxidative stress and reduced hepatocyte proliferation. During the rescue intervention using N-acetylcysteine, we observed significant improvement in ticlopidine-induced morphological changes in the liver, shortened body length, delayed swim bladder development, and proliferation of liver tissues showed significant improvement. In conclusion, ticlopidine might inhibit normal development and liver proliferation in zebrafish by upregulation of oxidative stress levels, thus leading to embryonic developmental toxicity and hepatotoxicity. In this study, we used zebrafish as a model organism to elucidate the developmental toxicity and hepatotoxicity induced by ticlopidine upregulation of oxidative stress signaling pathway in zebrafish, providing a theoretical basis for clinical application.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is rapidly increasing worldwide. However, the incidence in Henan Province of China has been unknown for more than two decades. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of T1DM in the 0.5-14.9 years age group in Henan Province of China from 2017 to 2020. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of hospital registration data from 18 cities in Henan Province, China, identified 1726 patients (843 males, 883 females) between 0.5-14.9 years of age with newly diagnosed T1DM in Henan Province from January 1st, 2017, to December 31st, 2020, covering more than 19 million children years at risk. RESULTS: The crude incidence of T1DM per 100 000 person years for the 0.5-14.9 years age group in the Henan Province of China was 2.19 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.99, 2.40], with a peak in the 10-14.9 years age group. Abstract Background To evaluate the effectiveness of individualized-dose polyethylene glycol recombinant human growth hormone (PEG-rhGH) for short stature. Methods This real-world study enrolled children with short stature in 19 hospitals throughout China. They were treated with PEG-rhGH for 6 months. The starting dosage ranged from 0.10 to 0.20 mg/kg/week. The primary outcome was the change in height standard deviation score (ΔHt SDS). Results Five hundred and ten patients were included and grouped based on dosage as A (0.10–0.14 mg/kg/week), B (0.15–0.16 mg/kg/week), C (0.17–0.19 mg/kg/week), and D (0.20 mg/kg/week). The mean 6-month ΔHt SDS for the total cohort was 0.49 ± 0.27, and the means differed among the four dose groups (P = 0.002). The ΔHt SDS was lower in group A than in groups B (LSM difference [95%CI], -0.09 [-0.17, -0.01]), C (LSM difference [95%CI], -0.10 [-0.18, -0.02]), and D (LSM difference [95%CI], -0.13 [-0.21, -0.05]) after adjusting baseline covariates. There were no significant differences among groups B, C, and D. When the baseline IGF-1 was 0 SDS, the △Ht SDS was not different among the four groups (P = 0.931 and P = 0.400). In children with baseline IGF-1 SDS of -2 ~ 0 SDS, a higher dosage was associated with a better treatment effect (P = 0.003), and the △Ht SDS was lower in older children than in younger ones (P

The correlation between flavonoids, phenolic metabolites and the total antioxidant capacity is well established. However, specific biomarkers of metabolites with antioxidant properties in purple rice grains remain unidentified. This study integrated nontargeted metabolomics, quantitative detection of flavonoids and phenolic compounds, and physiological and biochemical data to identify metabolite biomarkers of the antioxidant properties of purple rice grains after filling. The findings demonstrated a significant enhancement in the biosynthesis of flavonoids during the middle and late filling stages in purple rice grains. Additionally, the pathways involved in anthocyanin and flavonoid biosynthesis were significantly enriched. Catalase (CAT), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), total phenols (TP), flavonoids (FD), and oligomeric proanthocyanidin (OPC) were significantly correlated with philorizin, myricetin 3-galactoside, and trilobatin. Phlorizin, myricetin 3-galactoside, and trilobatin were metabolite biomarkers of antioxidant properties in purple rice grains. This study provides new ideas for the cultivation of high-quality coloured rice varieties with high antioxidant activity.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a widespread metabolic disorder with a yearly 6.7 million deaths worldwide. Several treatment options are available but with common side effects like weight gain, cardiovascular diseases, neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and nephrotoxicity. Therefore, ethnomedicine is gaining the interest of researchers in the treatment of DM. Ethnomedicine works by preventing intestinal absorption and hepatic production of glucose as well as enhancing glucose uptake in muscles and fatty tissues and increasing insulin secretion. A variety of plants have entered clinical trials but very few have gained approval for use. This current study provides an evaluation of such clinical trials. For this purpose, an extensive literature review was performed from a database using keywords like “ethnomedicine diabetes clinical trial”, “clinical trials”, “clinical trial in diabetes”, “diabetes”, “natural products in diabetes”, “ethno-pharmacological relevance of natural products in diabetes”, etc. Clinical trials of 20 plants and natural products were evaluated based on eligibility criteria. Major limitations associated with these clinical trials were a lack of patient compliance, dose-response relationship, and an evaluation of biomarkers with a small sample size and treatment duration. Measures in terms of strict regulations can be considered to achieve quality clinical trials. A specific goal of this systematic review is to discuss DM treatment through ethnomedicine based on recent clinical trials of the past 7 years.

This study addresses the uncertainty regarding the potential of a one-time basal application of mixed nitrogen (N) fertilizer to optimize both yield and eating quality of late-maturing medium japonica rice Nangeng 9108 and Fenggeng 1606 in the Yangtze River Delta. Six distinct combinations of blended N fertilizers were evaluated, with conventional split fertilization serving as the control. The blended formulations combined controlled-release N fertilizer (CRNF) and quick-acting N fertilizer (CNF) at a 1:1 ratio. Furthermore, the CRNF component was a combination of two CRNF types with varied N-release durations at a 4:1 ratio, leading to treatments labeled A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. Over a 2-year study, treatments B1, B2, C1, and C2 matched or surpassed the control in grain yield, with C1 and C2 yielding 2.83–4.85% more. Among the above high-yield treatments, C1 showcased the best rice eating quality, which exhibited increased peak viscosity, hot viscosity, cool viscosity, breakdown, and taste value of milled rice, and a decrease in rice protein content (PC). This enhancement in quality correlated with N accumulation patterns and their interplay with sink capacity. Specifically, a higher N accumulation resulted in a robust sink capacity under the C1 treatment, thus reducing N availability per unit sink capacity (NAV) and rice PC, ultimately enhancing the overall palatability of milled rice. Conclusively, the C1 fertilizer blend demonstrates potential in concurrently boosting yield and eating quality of late-maturing medium japonica rice in the region.

Elevated ripening temperature (ET) impacts rice grain quality. In this study, two rice varieties were investigated to evaluate the characterization of starch fine structure and grain eating quality under ET conditions. Rice exposure to ET increased the proportion of large-sized granules and starch granule average size, regardless of grain position. Compared to normal temperature (NT), the amylose content (AM) in the upper grain position (UP) exhibited a significant increase under ET, whereas the contrary results showed a decrease in the lower grain position (LP), and the proportion of shorter amylopectin chains increased under ET in UP or LP, whereas the proportion of long amylopectin chains decreased, resulting in a higher starch gelatinization temperature and enthalpy under ET. For grain position, compared to LP, UP had higher AM and a higher proportion of long amylopectin chains, leading to higher gelatinization enthalpy under ET. For eating quality, we found that ET deteriorated the eating quality of rice compared to NT, and UP had higher eating quality than LP under NT; however, there was a comparable eating quality between UP and LP under ET. Hence, elevated grain filling temperature mitigated the eating quality deterioration of rice grain in LP due to the lower AM and gelatinization enthalpy and the higher proportion of shorter amylopectin chains.

As the proportion of non-enterovirus 71 and non-coxsackievirus A16 which proportion of composition in the hand, foot, and mouth pathogenic spectrum gradually increases worldwide, the attention paid to other enteroviruses has increased. As a member of the species enterovirus A, coxsackievirus A14 (CVA14) has been epidemic around the world until now since it has been isolated. However, studies on CVA14 are poor and the effective population size, evolutionary dynamics, and recombination patterns of CVA14 are not well understood. In this study, 15 CVA14 strains were isolated from HFMD patients in mainland China from 2009 to 2019, and the complete sequences of CVA14 in GenBank as research objects were analyzed. CVA14 was divided into seven genotypes A-G based on an average nucleotide difference of the full-length VP1 coding region of more than 15%. Compared with the CVA14 prototype strain, the 15 CVA14 strains showed 84.0–84.7% nucleotide identity in the complete genome and 96.9–97.6% amino acid identity in the encoding region. Phylodynamic analysis based on 15 CVA14 strains and 22 full-length VP1 sequences in GenBank showed a mean substitution rate of 5.35 × 10−3 substitutions/site/year (95% HPD: 4.03–6.89 × 10−3) and the most recent common ancestor (tMRCA) of CVA14 dates back to 1942 (95% HPD: 1930–1950). The Bayesian skyline showed that the effective population size had experienced a decrease–increase–decrease fluctuation since 2004. The phylogeographic analysis indicated two and three possible migration paths in the world and mainland China, respectively. Four recombination patterns with others of species enterovirus A were observed in 15 CVA14 strains, among which coxsackievirus A2 (CVA2), coxsackievirus A4 (CVA4), coxsackievirus A6 (CVA6), coxsackievirus A8 (CVA8), and coxsackievirus A12 (CVA12) may act as recombinant donors in multiple regions. This study has filled the gap in the molecular epidemiological characteristics of CVA14, enriched the global CVA14 sequence database, and laid the epidemiological foundation for the future study of CVA14 worldwide.

In view of the significant differences among genotypes in the appearance of soft rice, it is necessary to conduct research on the differences in the appearance quality of soft rice and their mechanisms. It can provide a theoretical basis for the selection and breeding of superior appearance varieties at a later stage. In order to clarify the differences in appearance phenotypes between different soft rice genotypes and structural basis of endosperm structures behind the differences, four soft rice varieties were selected in this study, including two varieties with good-appearance and two varieties with cloudy appearance. The differences in appearance phenotypes and endosperm structure in mature grains of soft rice with different appearance phenotypes were scientifically analyzed. The development process of their endosperm differences at the filling stage was investigated. The results show that the difference in the rice appearance of soft rice varieties mainly lay in the chalk-free seed transparency and chalkiness. These differences were caused by two completely different types of endosperm structure. Fewer and smaller starch grain cavities were responsible for higher chalk-free transparency of soft rice grains, denser starch granules arrangement caused lower chalkiness of soft rice grains. Ten days after flowering, the starch granules in the back and heart of good-appearance soft rice were already significantly fuller and more closely packed than those of cloudy soft rice. At the same time, the number and area of starch granule holes were significantly smaller than those of cloudy soft rice. This difference gradually increased until maturity. Therefore, based on appearance evaluation, soft rice with good-appearance should have higher transparency and lower chalkiness. The endosperm starch granules should be full and tightly arranged. The number of starch grain cavities and the area should be smaller. These differences develop in the early stages of grouting and gradually increase.

Juxtapleural nodules were excluded from the segmented lung region in the Hounsfield unit threshold-based segmentation method. To re-include those regions in the lung region, a new approach was presented using scale-invariant feature transform and gradient vector flow models in this study. First, the scale-invariant feature transform method was utilized to detect all scale-invariant points in the binary lung region. The boundary points in the neighborhood of a scale-invariant point were collected to form the supportive boundary lines. Then, we utilized a Fourier descriptor to obtain a character representation of each supportive boundary line. Spectrum energy recognizes supportive boundaries that must be corrected. Third, the gradient vector flow-snake method was presented to correct the recognized supportive borders with a smooth profile curve, giving an ideal correction edge in those regions. Finally, the performance of the proposed method was evaluated through experiments on multiple authentic computed tomography images. The perfect results and robustness proved that the proposed method could correct the juxtapleural region precisely.

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) widely exist in human living environment and enter the body through water, food chain and breathing. Several studies have shown that MPs or NPs disrupt the blood-testis barrier in rodents. However, the molecular mechanism by which MPs and NPs damage the blood-testis barrier remains unclear. In the present study, our aim was to investigate the molecular mechanism of the destruction of blood-testis barrier induced by polystyrene (PS)-NPs. Mice were treated with 50 μg/kg·day PS-NPs by tail vein injection once daily for two consecutive days. The results showed that PS-NPs exposure significantly decreased the levels of tight junction (TJ) proteins ZO-2, occludin and claudin-11 in testis of mice. In vitro, we used TM4 Sertoli cells to explore the underlying mechanism of the decrease in TJ proteins induced by PS-NPs. We found that PS-NPs activated IRE1α and induced its downstream XBP1 splicing, which in turn elevated the expression of the E3 ubiquitin ligase CHIP, then CHIP triggers proteasomal degradation of ZO-2, occludin, and claudin-11 proteins. Our findings suggest that IRE1α/XBP1s/CHIP pathway is a pivotal mechanism of TJ proteins degradation induced by PS-NPs in mouse Sertoli cells. In conclusion, our results reveal that the degradation of TJ proteins is one of the mechanisms of blood-testis barrier destruction caused by acute exposure to PS-NPs.

The objective of this study was to understand the effects of processing on metabolites, flavonoids, black rice pigments and total antioxidant capacity of purple grains. The biochemical indicators and metabolites were determined before and after processing of purple grains. The results showed that the total antioxidant capacity, total phenol (TP), flavonoid (PD), oligomeric proanthocyanidin (OPC), ascorbic acid (AsA), cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3OG), peonidin 3-glucoside (P3G) contents of purple grains were greatly decreased after brown rice grains were processed into polished rice grains. The TP, PD, OPC, AsA, C3OG, and P3G of Yangzinuo No.1 brown rice (YZN1_B) or polished rice grains (YZN1_H) were higher than those of Yangzinuo No.2 brown rice (YZN2_B) or polished rice grains (YZN2_H). 154 differential metabolites (DMs) were identified between YZN1_B and YZN1_H. 52 DMs were identified between YZN2_B and YZN2_H. Citric acid and isocyanate are key metabolites affected during processing and have good correlations with various biochemical indicators.

Abstract Field experiments were performed in 2019 and 2020 to explore yield performance and biomass accumulation dynamics for different direct‐seeded rice methods after wheat straw return. The experimental treatments included two direct‐seeded rice methods (dry direct‐seeded rice and wet direct‐seeded rice) and two wheat straw return treatments (with and without wheat straw return). Wheat straw return had a negative impact on the yield and biomass of direct‐seeded rice. Compared with wet direct‐seeded rice, dry direct‐seeded rice was more negatively affected, with yield and biomass reduced by 6.7%–7.6% and 5.4%–6.5%, respectively. The yield loss was mainly associated with insufficient total spikelet numbers caused by reduced panicle numbers. A lower maximum tiller number caused by the restricted seedling tillering capacity was partly responsible for the inadequate panicle numbers in direct‐seeded rice after wheat straw return. Wheat straw return reduced the maximum and average rate of biomass accumulation, shortened the duration of effective biomass accumulation, and delayed the days to achieve the maximum rate of biomass accumulation for direct‐seeded rice. The negative effect of wheat straw return on direct‐seeded rice was concentrated mainly in the early stage; reduction in the average biomass accumulation rate in the early stage accounted for 61.1%–75.3% of the reduction in total average rate. Wet direct‐seeded rice had a higher average rate and amount of biomass accumulation at the early stage, a greater maximum tiller number, as well as a stronger photosynthetic ability and grain filling ability after heading, which contributed to improving panicle number and total spikelet number, ultimately increasing yield and biomass compared with dry direct‐seeded rice. These results demonstrate that wheat straw return reduced yield and biomass, mainly by inhibiting growth in the early stage of direct‐seeded rice. However, the wet direct‐seeding method decreased the losses in yield and biomass after wheat straw return.

BackgroundSimulated oral processing can be used to evaluate the palatability of cooked rice. Previously, we established a simulated oral processing method using a texture analyzer equipped with a multiple extrusion cell probe (TA/MEC). However, the relationship between oral processing and starch fine structure remains unknown.MethodsIn this study, we analyzed the oral processing properties using TA/MEC and characterized the starch fine structure of japonica rice by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and fluorophore-assisted capillary electrophoresis (FACE). The relationship between starch fine structure and oral processing of cooked japonica rice was further investigated.ResultsCooked rice structure contains fast-breakdown (Type I structure), slow-breakdown (Type II structure) and unbreakable structures (Type III structure). Fast-breakdown and slow-breakdown structure were positively correlated with the content of amylose and shorter amylopectin branches. The content of longer amylopectin branches was positively correlated with the contribution of unbreakable structure.ConclusionThe results indicated that cooked japonica rice varieties with more amylose and shorter amylopectin branches tend to form a harder texture and need more work to break down the fast and slow breakdown structures related to rice kernel fragmentation. Meanwhile, cooked japonica rice varieties possess stronger molecular entanglements due to their longer amylopectin branches and contribute more to the breakdown of unbreakable structures. These results can guide breeders to select rice varieties with desirable eating qualities for cultivation.

Unmanned aerial seeding (UAS) is an efficient unmanned rice planting method with broad application prospects. But its optimum basic seedling number and yield and quality characteristics remain unclear. Field experiments were conducted to compare UAS, unmanned dry direct seeding (UDDS), and unmanned carpet transplanting (UCT) methods using inbred japonica rice variety Nanjing 5718. The UAS method was subdivided into four planting density treatments (UAS105, UAS150, UAS195, and UAS240 = 105, 150, 195, and 240 seedlings/m2, respectively). The results showed that increasing the basic seedling density first increased the yield but then it decreased, and UAS195 produced a significantly higher yield. On the other hand, the grain processing, appearance, and taste quality deteriorated with improved nutritional quality. Among the three planting methods, UAS (UAS195) yielded less than UCT due to there being fewer spikelets per panicle, a lower grain-filling rate, and less photosynthetic activity after heading. However, UAS (UAS195) produced more yields than UDDS by having more panicles, more spikelets per panicle, and more biomass accumulation. Both UAS195 and UDDS had poorer grain processing, appearance, and nutritional quality than UCT, but increased amylose content and taste values. Therefore, UAS195 could be an alternative planting method for inbred japonica rice with coordinated yield, quality, and production efficiency.

Exogenous application of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) improves rice drought tolerance, but its effects on rice yield and quality under drought stress during the reproductive phase remain unclear. A pot experiment was conducted to measure rice yield, grain quality, and starch physicochemical properties under three treatments: continuous flooding irrigation throughout the whole growth season (CF), ten days of −40 kPa drought stress at the heading stage (DS), and foliar spraying 100 μmol L−1 MeJA on the first three days of the ten-day −40 kPa heading stage drought stress (DM). An inbred japonica rice variety, Huaidao 5, was the experimental material, and each treatment had 11 replicates for sampling. The results indicated that DS significantly reduced rice yield and quality compared to CF. With increases in superoxide dismutase (+22.2%), peroxidase activities (+10.5%), catalase (+5.0%), and proline content (+5.7%), DM significantly increased 1000-grain weight (+8.6%), filled grain percentage (+3.6%), and yield (+11.1%) compared with DS. Regarding grain quality, DM significantly decreased the chalkiness degree (−12.3%) and protein content (−3.9%) but increased the amylose content (+17.2%) and taste value (+7.3%) relative to DS. In addition, DM improved breakdown viscosity (+17.8%), gelatinization enthalpy (+17.2%), retrogradation enthalpy (+28.0%), 1045/1022 cm−1 ratio (+3.0%), and starch granule morphology compared to DS. In conclusion, exogenous application of 100 μmol L−1 MeJA enhanced the antioxidant capacity of rice leaves, and thus improved starch physicochemical properties to increase grain yield and quality under terminal drought stress.

Abstract Introduction Diagnosing Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) involves damages to multiple joints and carries variable clinical symptoms, posing great challenge to the diagnosis of KBD for clinical practitioners. However, it is still unclear which clinical features of KBD are more informative for the diagnosis of Kashin-Beck disease among adolescent. Methods We first manually extracted 26 possible features including clinical manifestations, and pathological changes of X-ray images from 400 KBD and 400 non-KBD adolescents. With such features, we performed four classification methods, i.e., random forest algorithms (RFA), artificial neural networks (ANNs), support vector machines (SVMs) and linear regression (LR) with four feature selection methods, i.e., RFA, minimum redundancy maximum relevance (mRMR), support vector machine recursive feature elimination (SVM—RFE) and Relief. The performance of diagnosis of KBD with respect to different classification models were evaluated by sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). Results Our results demonstrated that the 10 out of 26 discriminative features were displayed more powerful performance, regardless of the chosen of classification models and feature selection methods. These ten discriminative features were distal end of phalanges alterations, metaphysis alterations and carpals alterations and clinical manifestations of ankle joint movement limitation, enlarged finger joints, flexion of the distal part of fingers, elbow joint movement limitation, squatting limitation, deformed finger joints, wrist joint movement limitation. Conclusions The selected ten discriminative features could provide a fast, effective diagnostic standard for KBD adolescents.
