Noncollinear ferroic materials are sought after as testbeds to explore the intimate connections between topology and symmetry, which result in electronic, optical and magnetic functionalities not observed in collinear ferroic materials. For example, ferroaxial materials have ordered rotational structural distortions that break mirror symmetry and induce chirality. When ferroaxial order is coupled with ferroelectricity arising from a broken inversion symmetry, it offers the prospect of electric-field-control of the ferroaxial distortions and opens up new tunable functionalities. However, chiral ferroelectrics, especially ones stable at room temperature, are rare. We report the discovery of a strain-stabilized, room-temperature chiral ferroelectric phase in single crystals of BaTiS$_3$, a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) hexagonal chalcogenide. Using first-principles calculations, we predict the stabilization of this multiferroic phase having $P6_3$ space group for biaxial tensile strains exceeding 1.5% applied on the basal ab-plane of the room temperature $P6_3cm$ phase of BaTiS$_3$. The chiral ferroelectric phase is characterized by rotational distortions of select TiS$_6$ octahedra around the long $c$-axis and polar displacement of Ti atoms along the $c$-axis. We used an innovative approach using focused ion beam milling to make appropriately strained samples of BaTiS$_3$. The ferroaxial and ferroelectric distortions, and their domains in $P6_3$-BaTiS$_3$ were directly resolved using atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. Landau-based phenomenological modeling predicts a strong coupling between the ferroelectric and the ferroaxial order making $P6_3$-BaTiS$_3$ an attractive test bed for achieving electric-field control of chirality-related phenomena such as circular photo-galvanic current and the Rashba effect., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

The discovery of ferroelectricity in hafnia-based materials have boosted the potential of incorporating ferroelectrics in advanced electronics, thanks to their compatibility with silicon technology. However, comprehending why these materials defy the common trend of reduced ferroelectric ordering at the nanoscale, and the mechanism that stabilizes the ferroelectric phase (absent in hafnia phase diagram) presents significant challenges to traditional knowledge of ferroelectricity. In this work, we show that the formation of the orthorhombic ferroelectric phase (o-FE, space group Pca21) of the single-crystalline epitaxial films of 10% La-doped HfO2 (LHO) on (111)-oriented yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) relies on the stability of the high-pressure orthorhombic antiferroelectric phase (o-AFE, space group Pbca). Our detailed structural characterizations demonstrate that as-grown LHO films represent largely the o-AFE phase being thermodynamically stabilized by the compressive strain. Our Kelvin probe force microscopy studies show, under mechanical poling, the o-AFE phase is converted to the o-FE phase which remains stable under ambient conditions. We find that the orthorhombic phase stability is enhanced in thinner films down to one-unit-cell thickness, a trend that is unknown in any other ferroelectric films. This is due to the vanishing depolarization field of the o-AFE phase and the isomorphic LHO/YSZ interface, supporting strain-enhanced ferroelectricity in the ultrathin films. This results in an unprecedented increase of the Curie temperature up to 850 {\deg}C, the highest reported for sub-nanometer-thick ferroelectrics. Overall, our findings opens the way for advanced engineering of hafnia-based materials for ferroelectric applications and heralding a new frontier of high-temperature ferroelectrics at the two-dimensional limit.

Fluids under extreme confinement exhibit distinctly new properties compared to their bulk analogs. Understanding the structure and intermolecular bonding of confined water lays the foundation for creating and improving applications at the water-energy nexus. However, probing confined water experimentally at the length scale of intermolecular and surface forces has remained a challenge. Here, we report a combined experiment/theory framework to reveal changes in H-bonding environment and the underlying molecular structure of confined water inside individual carbon nanotubes. H-bonding is directly probed through the O-H stretch frequency with vibrational electron energy-loss spectroscopy and compared to spectra from molecular-dynamics simulations based on density-functional-theory. Experimental spectra show that water in larger carbon nanotubes exhibit the bonded O-H vibrations of bulk water, but at smaller diameters, the frequency blueshifts to near the 'free' O-H stretch found in water vapor and hydrophobic surfaces. The matching simulations reveal that, in addition to steric confinement, the tube's vibrations play a key role in breaking up the H-bond network, resulting in an orientationally-dispersed, non-H-bonded phase. Furthermore, the temperature-dependence of the vibrations is investigated, providing insights into phase transitions and the confined-water density. This research demonstrates the potential of the experiment/theory framework to explore unprecedented aspects of structure and bonding in confined fluids.

Ion transport across solid solid interfaces is often slower than through the bulk of a material, impeding the charge and discharge rate of batteries. Designing highly conductive interfaces is challenging due to the need to probe ion conduction at individual interfaces and correlate it with the local structure. In this study, we address this challenge by enabling the simultaneous measurements of local Li-dominated optical phonons and ion distributions, using high-energy and high-spatial-resolution spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). Further, this method allows for a direct correlation of ion conduction with interfacial structures identified by STEM imaging. By examining diverse individual interfaces of LiCoO2, we reveal the sensitivity of ion conduction to interface atomic-scale structure and chemistry. Our method enables correlative analysis of ion transport behavior, and atomic and band structures, and can serve as a robust experimental approach for identifying interface structures that offer high conductivity and cyclability for batteries.

Insulating materials featuring ultralow thermal conductivity for diverse applications also require robust mechanical properties. Conventional thinking, however, which correlates strong bonding with high atomic-vibration-mediated heat conduction, led to diverse weakly bonded materials that feature ultralow thermal conductivity and low elastic moduli. One must, therefore, search for strongly-bonded single crystals in which heat transport is impeded by other means. Here, we report intrinsic, glass-like, ultralow thermal conductivity and ultrahigh elastic-modulus/thermal-conductivity ratio in single-crystalline Ruddlesden-Popper Ban+1ZrnS3n+1, n = 2,3, which are derivatives of BaZrS3. Their key features are strong anharmonicity and intra-unit-cell rock-salt blocks. The latter produce strongly bonded intrinsic superlattices, impeding heat conduction by broadband reduction of phonon velocities and mean free paths and concomitant strong phonon localization. The present study initiates a paradigm of mechanically stiff phonon glasses.

Structural disorder has been shown to enhance and modulate magnetic, electrical, dipolar, electrochemical, and mechanical properties of materials. However, the possibility of obtaining novel optical and optoelectronic properties from structural disorder remains an open question. Here, we show unambiguous evidence of disorder in the form of anisotropic, picoscale atomic displacements modulating the refractive index tensor and resulting in the giant optical anisotropy observed in BaTiS$_3$, a quasi-one-dimensional hexagonal chalcogenide. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal the presence of antipolar displacements of Ti atoms within adjacent TiS$_6$ chains along the c-axis, and three-fold degenerate Ti displacements in the a-b plane. $^{47/49}$Ti solid-state NMR provides additional evidence for those Ti displacements in the form of a three-horned NMR lineshape resulting from a low symmetry local environment around Ti atoms. We used scanning transmission electron microscopy to directly observe the globally disordered Ti a-b plane displacements and find them to be ordered locally over a few unit cells. First-principles calculations show that the Ti a-b plane displacements selectively reduce the refractive index along the ab-plane, while having minimal impact on the refractive index along the chain direction, thus resulting in a giant enhancement in the optical anisotropy. By showing a strong connection between structural disorder with picoscale displacements and the optical response in BaTiS$_3$, this study opens a pathway for designing optical materials with high refractive index and functionalities such as large optical anisotropy and nonlinearity., Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures

Understanding the emergent electronic structure in twisted atomically thin layers has led to the exciting field of twistronics. However, practical applications of such systems are challenging since the specific angular correlations between the layers must be precisely controlled and the layers have to be single crystalline with uniform atomic ordering. Here, we suggest an alternative, simple and scalable approach where nanocrystalline two-dimensional (2D) film on three-dimensional (3D) substrates yield twisted-interface-dependent properties. Ultrawide-bandgap hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) thin films are directly grown on high in-plane lattice mismatched wide-bandgap silicon carbide (4H-SiC) substrates to explore the twist-dependent structure-property correlations. Concurrently, nanocrystalline h-BN thin film shows strong non-linear second-harmonic generation and ultra-low cross-plane thermal conductivity at room temperature, which are attributed to the twisted domain edges between van der Waals stacked nanocrystals with random in-plane orientations. First-principles calculations based on time-dependent density functional theory manifest strong even-order optical nonlinearity in twisted h-BN layers. Our work unveils that directly deposited 2D nanocrystalline thin film on 3D substrates could provide easily accessible twist-interfaces, therefore enabling a simple and scalable approach to utilize the 2D-twistronics integrated in 3D material devices for next-generation nanotechnology., Comment: 33 pages, 4 figures

The isotopic mass of constituent elements of materials has a well-known effect on the energy of vibrational modes. By means of monochromated scanning transmission electron microscopy we have experimentally studied the phonon bandstructure of hexagonal BN, where a phonon band gap appears between in-plane optical phonon modes and the lower energy part of the phonon spectrum. The size of the phonon band gap can be manipulated by the isotopic mass of the boron. While in $^{11}$BN the phonon band gap is about 7 meV wide, in $^{10}$BN the gap nearly closes, being an order of magnitude smaller (below 0.5 meV). Wide and ultrawide-bandgap semiconductors lie at the heart of next-generation high-power, high-frequency electronics. Here, we report the growth of ultrawide-bandgap boron nitride (BN) thin films on wide-bandgap gallium nitride (GaN) by pulsed laser deposition. Comprehensive spectroscopic (core level and valence band XPS, FTIR, Raman) and microscopic (AFM and STEM) characterizations confirm the growth of BN thin films on GaN. Optically, we observed that BN/GaN heterostructure is second-harmonic generation active. Moreover, we fabricated the BN/GaN heterostructure-based Schottky diode that demonstrates rectifying characteristics, lower turn-on voltage, and an improved breakdown capability (234 V) as compared to GaN (168 V), owing to the higher breakdown electrical field of BN. Grain boundaries (GBs) are a prolific microstructural feature that dominates the functionality of a wide class of materials. The change in functionality at a GB is a direct result of unique local atomic arrangements, different from those in the grain, that have driven extensive experimental and theoretical studies correlating atomic-scale GB structures to macroscopic electronic, infrared-optical, and thermal properties. Here, we examine a SrTiO3 GB using atomic-resolution aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and ultra-high-energy-resolution monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This combination enables the direct correlation of the GB structure, composition, and chemical bonding with atomic vibrations within the GB dislocation-cores. We observe that nonstoichiometry and changes in coordination and bonding at the GB leads to a redistribution of vibrational states at the GB and its dislocation-cores relative to the bounding grains. The access to localized vibrations within GBs provided by ultrahigh spatial/spectral resolution EELS correlated with atomic coordination, bonding, and stoichiometry and validated by theory, provides a direct route to quantifying the impact of individual boundaries on macroscopic properties., Comment: 41 pages, 15 figures

High-spatial-resolution vibrational spectroscopy is one of the principal techniques for nanoscale compositional analysis in biological materials. Here, we present a new method for the analysis of whole-cell biological specimens through nanoscale vibrational electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the monochromated scanning transmission electron microscope. Using the combined spatial and spectral resolution of the technique, we examine the vascular system of a cucumber stem and identify clear physical and vibrational signatures from the different cellular regions with high spatial resolution. Furthermore, using first-principles calculations combined with optical and EELS spectroscopy on the individual components that make up the cucumber stem, we unravel the physical mechanisms of the vibrational signatures and directly assign compositional origins to the cell walls and bodies of different cellular regions. These results demonstrate that monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy is a promising technique for nanoscale spatial mapping of the chemical composition of biological materials.

High throughput characterization and processing techniques are becoming increasingly necessary to navigate multivariable, data-driven design challenges for sensors and electronic devices. For two-dimensional materials, device performance is highly dependent upon a vast array of material properties including number of layers, lattice strain, carrier concentration, defect density, and grain structure. In this work, laser-crystallization was used to locally pattern and transform hundreds of regions of amorphous MoS2 thin films into 2D 2H-MoS2. A high throughput Raman spectroscopy approach was subsequently used to assess the process-dependent structural and compositional variations for each illuminated region, yielding over 5500 distinct non-resonant, resonant, and polarized Raman spectra. The rapid generation of a comprehensive library of structural and compositional data elucidated important trends between structure-property-processing relationships involving laser-crystallized MoS2, including the relationships between grain size, grain orientation, and intrinsic strain. Moreover, extensive analysis of structure/property relationships allowed for intelligent design, and evaluation of major contributions to, device performance in MoS2 chemical sensors. In particular, it is found that sensor performance is strongly dependent on the orientation of the MoS2 grains relative to the crystal plane.

As the length-scales of materials decrease, heterogeneities associated with interfaces approach the importance of the surrounding materials. Emergent electronic and magnetic interface properties in superlattices have been studied extensively by both experiments and theory. $^{1-6}$ However, the presence of interfacial vibrations that impact phonon-mediated responses, like thermal conductivity $^{7,8}$, has only been inferred in experiments indirectly. While it is accepted that intrinsic phonons change near boundaries $^{9,10}$, the physical mechanisms and length-scales through which interfacial effects influence materials remain unclear. Herein, we demonstrate the localized vibrational response associated with the interfaces in SrTiO$_3$-CaTiO$_3$ superlattices by combining advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging and spectroscopy and density-functional-theory calculations. Symmetries atypical of either constituent material are observed within a few atomic planes near the interface. The local symmetries create local phonon modes that determine the global response of the superlattice once the spacing of the interfaces approaches the phonon spatial extent. The results provide direct visualization and quantification, illustrating the progression of the local symmetries and interface vibrations as they come to determine the vibrational response of an entire superlattice; stated differently, the progression from a material with interfaces, to a material dominated by interfaces, to a material of interfaces as the period decreases. Direct observation of such local atomic and vibrational phenomena demonstrates that their spatial extent needs to be quantified to understand macroscopic behavior. Hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) enable the direct manipulation of mid-infrared light at nanometer scales, many orders of magnitude below the free-space light wavelength. High resolution monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) facilitates measurement of excitations with energies extending into the mid-infrared while maintaining nanoscale spatial resolution, making it ideal for detecting HPhPs. The electron beam is a precise source and probe of HPhPs, that allows us to perform novel experiments to observe nanoscale confinement in HPhP structures and directly extract hBN polariton dispersions for both modes in the bulk of the flake and modes along the edge. Our measurements reveal technologically important non-trivial phenomena, such as localized polaritons induced by environmental heterogeneity, enhanced and suppressed excitation due to two-dimensional interference, and strong modification of high-momenta excitations of edge-confined polaritons by nanoscale heterogeneity on edge boundaries. Our work opens exciting prospects for the design of real-world optical mid-infrared devices based on hyperbolic polaritons.

The non-linear response of dielectrics to intense, ultrashort electric fields has been a sustained topic of interest for decades with one of its most important applications being femtosecond laser micro/nano-machining. More recently, renewed interests in strong field physics of solids were raised with the advent of mid-infrared femtosecond laser pulses, such as high-order harmonic generation, optical-field-induced currents, etc. All these processes are underpinned by photoionization (PI), namely the electron transfer from the valence to the conduction bands, on a time scale too short for phononic motion to be of relevance. Here, in hexagonal boron nitride, we reveal that the bandgap can be finely manipulated by femtosecond laser pulses as a function of field polarization direction with respect to the lattice, in addition to the field's intensity. It is the modification of bandgap that enables the ultrafast PI processes to take place in dielectrics. We further demonstrate the validity of the Keldysh theory in describing PI in dielectrics in the few TW/cm2 regime., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Design of nanoscale structures with desired nanophotonic properties are key tasks for nanooptics and nanophotonics. Here, the correlative relationship between local nanoparticle geometries and their plasmonic responses is established using encoder-decoder neural networks. In the im2spec network, the correlative relationship between local particle geometries and local spectra is established via encoding the observed geometries to a small number of latent variables and subsequently decoding into plasmonic spectra; in the spec2im network, the relationship is reversed. Surprisingly, these reduced descriptions allow high-veracity predictions of the local responses based on geometries for fixed compositions and chemical states of the surface. The analysis of the latent space distributions and the corresponding decoded and closest (in latent space) encoded images yields insight into the generative mechanisms of plasmonic interactions in the nanoparticle arrays. Ultimately, this approach creates a path toward determining configurations that can yield the spectrum closest to the desired one, paving the way for stochastic design of nanoplasmonic structures.

Low-loss electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) has emerged as a technique of choice for exploring the localization of plasmonic phenomena at the nanometer level, necessitating analysis of physical behaviors from 3D spectral data sets. For systems with high localization, linear unmixing methods provide an excellent basis for exploratory analysis, while in more complex systems large numbers of components are needed to accurately capture the true plasmonic response and the physical interpretability of the components becomes uncertain. Here, we explore machine learning based analysis of low-loss EELS data on heterogeneous self-assembled monolayer films of doped-semiconductor nanoparticles, which support infrared resonances. We propose a pathway for supervised analysis of EELS datasets that separate and classify regions of the films with physically distinct spectral responses. The classifications are shown to be robust, to accurately capture the common spatiospectral tropes of the complex nanostructures, and to be transferable between different datasets to allow high-throughput analysis of large areas of the sample. As such, it can be used as a basis for automated experiment workflows based on Bayesian optimization, as demonstrated on the ex situ data. We further demonstrate the use of non-linear autoencoders (AE) combined with clustering in the latent space of the AE yields highly reduced representations of the system response that yield insight into the relevant physics that do not depend on operator input and bias. The combination of these supervised and unsupervised tools provides complementary insight into the nanoscale plasmonic phenomena.

Isotope labeling is a fundamental staple for the study of cellular metabolism and protein function. The conventional techniques that allow resolution and identification of isotopically-labeled biomarkers, such as mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy, are macroscopic in nature and have the disadvantage of requiring relatively large quantities of material and lacking spatial resolution. Here, we record the vibrational spectra of an {\alpha}-amino acid, L-alanine, using spatially-resolved monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) to directly resolve carbon-site-specific isotopic labels in a scanning transmission electron microscope. The EELS is acquired in aloof mode, meaning the probe is positioned away from the sample (~20 nm) sparing the sensitive biomolecule from the high-energy excitations, while the vibrational modes are investigated. An isotopic red-shift of 5.3 meV was obtained for the C=O stretching mode in the carboxylic acid group for 13C-enriched L-alanine when compared with naturally occurring 12C L-alanine, which is confirmed by macroscopic infrared spectroscopy measurements and theoretical calculations. The EELS experiments presented here are the first demonstration of non-destructive resolution and identification of isotopically-labeled amino acids in the electron microscope, opening a new door for the study of biological matter at the nanoscale.

Surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs) - the surface-bound electromagnetic modes of a polar material resulting from the coupling of light with optic phonons - offer immense technological opportunities for nanophotonics in the infrared (IR) spectral region. Here, we present a novel approach to overcome the major limitation of SPhPs, namely the narrow, material-specific spectral range where SPhPs can be supported, called the Reststrahlen band. We use an atomic-scale superlattice (SL) of two polar semiconductors, GaN and AlN, to create a hybrid material featuring layer thickness-tunable optic phonon modes. As the IR dielectric function is governed by the optic phonon behavior, such control provides a means to create a new dielectric function distinct from either constituent material and to tune the range over which SPhPs can be supported. This work offers the first glimpse of the guiding principles governing the degree to which the dielectric function can be designed using this approach.

Nanoscale control over the second-order photon correlation function $g^{(2)}(\tau)$ is critical to emerging research in nonlinear nanophotonics and integrated quantum information science. Here we report on quasiparticle control of photon bunching with $g^{(2)}(0)>45$ in the cathodoluminescence of nanodiamond nitrogen vacancy (NV$^0$) centers excited by a converged electron beam in an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope. Plasmon-mediated NV$^0$ cathodoluminescence exhibits a 16-fold increase in luminescence intensity correlated with a three fold reduction in photon bunching compared with that of uncoupled NV$^0$ centers. This effect is ascribed to the excitation of single temporally uncorrelated NV$^0$ centers by single surface plasmon polaritons. Spectrally resolved Hanbury Brown--Twiss interferometry is employed to demonstrate that the bunching is mediated by the NV$^0$ phonon sidebands, while no observable bunching is detected at the zero-phonon line. The data are consistent with fast phonon-mediated recombination dynamics, a conclusion substantiated by agreement between Bayesian regression and Monte Carlo models of superthermal NV$^0$ luminescence., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Understanding the near-field electromagnetic interactions that produce optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) is central to the integration of twisted light into nanotechnology. Here, we examine the cathodoluminescence (CL) of plasmonic vortices carrying OAM generated in spiral nanostructures through scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The nanospiral geometry defines the photonic local density of states (LDOS) sampled by STEM-CL, which provides access to the phase and amplitude of the plasmonic vortex with nanometer spatial and meV spectral resolution. We map the full spectral dispersion of the plasmonic vortex in the spiral structure and examine the effects of increasing topological charge on the plasmon phase and amplitude in the detected CL signal. The vortex is mapped in CL over a broad spectral range, and deviations between the predicted and detected positions of near-field optical signatures of as much as 5 per cent are observed. Finally, enhanced luminescence is observed from concentric spirals of like handedness compared to that from concentric spirals of opposite handedness, indicating the potential to couple plasmonic vortices to chiral nanostructures for sensitive detection and manipulation of optical OAM.

Alloying/doping in two-dimensional material has been important due to wide range band gap tunability. Increasing the number of components would increase the degree of freedom which can provide more flexibility in tuning the band gap and also reduced the growth temperature. Here, we report synthesis of quaternary alloys MoxW1-xS2ySe2(1-y) using chemical vapour deposition. The composition of alloys has been tuned by changing the growth temperatures. As a result, we can tune the bandgap which varies from 1.73 eV to 1.84 eV. The detailed theoretical calculation supports the experimental observation and shows a possibility of wide tunability of bandgap.
