Abstract

An experimental investigation of collisionless shock ion acceleration is presented using a multicomponent plasma and a high-intensity picosecond duration laser pulse. Protons are the only accelerated ions when a near-critical-density plasma is driven by a laser with a modest normalized vector potential. The results of particle-in-cell simulations imply that collisionless shock may accelerate protons alone selectively, which can be an important tool for understanding the physics of inaccessible collisionless shocks in space and astrophysical plasma.

Abstract

We investigate the competition of magnetic reconnections in self-generated and external magnetic fields in laser-produced plasmas. The temporal evolution of plasma structures measured with self-emission imaging shows the vertical expansions and horizontal separation of plasma, which can be signatures of reconnection outflows in self-generated and external magnetic fields, respectively. Because the outflows in self-generated magnetic fields are not clear in the presence of the external magnetic field, the external magnetic field can suppress the magnetic reconnection in self-generated magnetic fields., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, High Energy Density Physics, in press

Abstract

We have investigated the interaction of ultra intense laser light with a carbon nanotube (CNT) target. The experimental results show an increased electron acceleration and a very low laser reflection as compared to non-structured targets. In addition, interferograms show very weak plasma expansion in front of the CNT target whereas the flat target creates a considerable amount of preformed plasma. A 2-D PIC calculation indicates that high laser absorption is possible via a Brunel mechanism following the ponderomotive heating in the expanded plasma between nanotubes.

Abstract

The FIREX-1 project, the goal of which is to demonstrate fuel heating up to 5 keV by fast ignition scheme, has been carried out since 2003 including construction and tuning of LFEX laser and integrated experiments. Implosion and heating experiment of Fast Ignition targets have been performed since 2009 with Gekko-XII and LFEX lasers. A deuterated polystyrene shell target was imploded with the 0.53- μm Gekko-XII, and the 1.053- μm beam of the LFEX laser was injected through a gold cone attached to the shell to generate hot electrons to heat the imploded fuel plasma. Pulse contrast ratio of the LFEX beam was significantly improved. Also a variety of plasma diagnostic instruments were developed to be compatible with harsh environment of intense hard x-rays (γ rays) and electromagnetic pulses due to the intense LFEX beam on the target. Large background signals around the DD neutron signal in time-of-flight record of neutron detector were found to consist of neutrons via (γ,n) reactions and scattered gamma rays. Enhanced neutron yield was confirmed by carefully eliminating such backgrounds. Neutron enhancement up to 3.5 × 107 was observed. Heating efficiency was estimated to be 10–20% assuming a uniform temperature rise model.

Abstract

Absolute Kα line spectroscopy is proposed to study laser-plasma interactions taking place in cone-guided fast ignition targets. A transmission-type spectrometer was developed, and its absolute sensitivity was measured with laser-generated x-rays and radioisotopes, showing good agreement with theoretical predictions. The absolute yield of Au Kα line was mesured in the fast ignition experimental campaign perfomed at ILE, Osaka University. Assuming a single Maxwellian electron spectrum and one-way travel of hot electrons through the cone, energy transfer efficiency of incident LFEX laser to hot electrons was derived.

6. Electron energy distributions through superdense matter by Monte-Carlo simulations

Abstract

We have studied energy distribution of fast electrons passing through a highly compressed core plasma for fast ignition research in inertial confinement fusion. Recent PIC calculations indicate that the collective effect of electric and magnetic fields on the transport may be less significant than the binary collisions in the case of a high density fusion pellet. In order to understand the net effect of binary collisions in dense plasma, we calculate electron energy distributions at several viewing angles using an electromagnetic cascade Monte-Carlo simulation, EGS5, for estimation of the contribution of multi collisional process. Here, the construction of physical parameters in the code were taken from the calculation results given by 2 dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. In the result, the number of electrons detected on the laser axis within the range to 15 MeV significantly decreases for the superdense region (max: 1.6⋅1025[/cm3]) compared with the low density plasma. The reduction on the electron number decreases with increase of observation angles gradually and finally the number almost coincides more than 40 degrees.

Abstract

Recent theoretical and numerical studies on laser-driven ion acceleration shows sub- relativistic ion acceleration with multistep acceleration schemes. The multistep acceleration with multiple laser pulses and multiple targets allow us to access the relativistic ion regime with the current and the future laser facilities. However, there is no relativistic ion detectors available in the field of laser ion acceleration. We have been developing energetic ion diagnostics using a combination of solid state nuclear path tracker and Thomson parabola, and scintillator base relativistic ion detectors commonly used in nuclear physics. We discuss the relativistic ion acceleration by irradiating a nanostructure target with ultra- intense laser. Abstract

We present here a new diagnostics based on using LiF crystal detectors that are able to perform measurements an intensity distribution of X-rays beams with diameters ranging from some microns up to some centimeters with high spatial resolution (~1 micron). in situ, 3D visualization of SACLA XFEL focused beam profile along propagation, including propagation inside photoluminescence solid materials, is demonstrated.

Abstract

We present an indirect method of estimating the strength of a shock wave, allowing on line monitoring of its reproducibility in each laser shot. This method is based on a shot-to-shot measurement of the X-ray emission from the ablated plasma by a high resolution, spatially resolved focusing spectrometer. An optical pump laser with energy of 1.0 J and pulse duration of ∼660 ps was used to irradiate solid targets or foils with various thicknesses containing Oxygen, Aluminum, Iron, and Tantalum. The high sensitivity and resolving power of the X-ray spectrometer allowed spectra to be obtained on each laser shot and to control fluctuations of the spectral intensity emitted by different plasmas with an accuracy of ∼2%, implying an accuracy in the derived electron plasma temperature of 5%-10% in pump-probe high energy density science experiments. At nano- and sub-nanosecond duration of laser pulse with relatively low laser intensities and ratio Z/A∼0.5, the electron temperature follows Te∼Ilas2/3. Thus, measurements of the electron plasma temperature allow indirect estimation of the laser flux on the target and control its shot-to-shot fluctuation. Knowing the laser flux intensity and its fluctuation gives us the possibility of monitoring shot-to-shot reproducibility of shock wave strength generation with high accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The hyperfine resolved rotational spectrum of the CH[sub 2]CP radical in the &Xtilde;²B[sub 1] ground electronic state has been observed for the first time using a Fourier transform microwave spectrometer in combination with a pulsed discharge nozzle. The radical was produced by discharging a mixture of PH[sub 3] and C[sub 2]H[sub 2] diluted in either Ar or Ne. A total of 25 hyperfine components of the 2[sub 02]-1[sub 01] and 3[sub 03]-2[sub 02] transitions have been measured which enabled us to precisely determine hyperfine coupling constants for both phosphorus and hydrogen nuclei. Spin densities on the phosphorus and β-carbon atoms, estimated from the hyperfine coupling constants, suggest that the radical forms an allenic structure (CP double bond) that is modified by a phosphoryl structure (CP triple bond), which is consistent with the theoretical estimation obtained previously by an ab initio calculation. The nature of the CP chemical bond in the radical is investigated in comparison with the corresponding nitrogen bearing counterparts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lett. 110, 071905 (2017) https://doi.org/10.1063/1.4976541., We have observed the lattice expansion before the onset of compression in an optical-laser-driven target, using diffraction of femtosecond X-ray beams generated by the SPring-8 Angstrom Compact Free-electron Laser. The change in diffraction angle provides a direct measure of the lattice spacing, allowing the density to be calculated with a precision of ±1%. From the known equation of state relations, this allows an estimation of the temperature responsible for the expansion as <1000 K. The subsequent ablation-driven compression was observed with a clear rise in density at later times. This demonstrates the feasibility of studying the dynamics of preheating and shock formation with unprecedented detail.

Abstract

We have developed PW(0.5ps/500J) laser system to demonstrate fast heating of imploded core plasmas using a hollow cone shell target. Significant enhancement of thermal neutron yield has been realized with PW-laser heating, confirming that the high heating efficiency is maintained as the short-pulse laser power is substantially increased to near equivalent power to the ignition condition. The efficient heating could be caused by the efficient guiding of heating pulse with the hollow cone and self-organized relativistic electron transport. According to the experimental results, we are now developing a 10kJ-PW laser system to study the ignition-equivalent temperature heating physics.
