The current research examines how the knowledge that a product is made using a traditional method influences perceptions of its quality. We propose that consumers believe that a brand using traditional methods is beneficial for society because it is concerned about cultural preservation and this belief has a positive effect on perceived quality. Six experimental studies show that consumers evaluate products produced with a method described as traditional to be higher in quality than similar products that are not described as traditionally made and this effect is mediated by the belief that the brand is beneficial for society. Consistent with this theory, the positive effect of traditional production on perceived quality is attenuated when consumers view the brand to be unconcerned about cultural preservation, such as when the use of a traditional method is framed as a follower strategy (i.e. it imitates the actions of other brands) or when the brand is a multinational company. By showing that the mere mention of a traditional method can be another subtle way to position a brand as a moral actor, these findings contribute to the understanding of the link between perceived social responsibility and product evaluations. The inheritance of traditional handicraft of intangible cultural heritage is facing an unprecedented crisis. The essence of inheritance is the process of imparting and inheriting from master to apprentice, but there is acute shortage of research about the parties, the relationship and the behavior of inheritance. Therefore, choosing inherited behavior as a starting point to explore the inner formation mechanism of master and apprentice inheritance in traditional handicraft, as well as determining the influencing factors of the inheritance, have important theoretical value and practical significance for the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage. Using 4 traditional handicraft inheritance institutions in China as case objects, 37 inheritance parties and 21 mentoring matching groups were interviewed. Through standard case analysis and three-step coding method of grounded theory, it is found that skill generation involves the stages of inquiry, interaction and feedback, as well as the following steps:cognition of skill generation, coupling of skill generation, automation of skill generation, etc. Through coding, 12 categories and 33 specific influencing factors are identified. Among them, individual factors influence interaction relation, and the interaction relation has a concrete influence on the process of inheritance, affecting the ultimate effect of inheritance. Through a comprehensive review of published literature on fish glue (FG), the ecological glue for traditional furniture, the traditional handicraft for making FG was found to include six main processes: soaking, steaming, manual smashing, decoction, filtration, and airing. The handicraft that makes FG is manual and is not only time-consuming and laborious but does not have clearly documented standard processes and is thus less repeatable. Considering this, experiments to optimize a new technique for making FG were designed. Six basic technological processes (cutting and drying, crushing, soaking, decoction, filtration, and airing) were investigated to optimize the new glue production technique. The technological processes of the new technique were compared with those of the traditional handicraft method. The results indicated that preparing FG following the optimal processes of the new glue-making technique not only ensured the quality of the glue solution but also outperformed the traditional handicraft technique in the following aspects: 1) it simplifies the production process, reduces labor intensity, and saves time: the soaking time is decreased by 50% and the traditional manual smashing process is not required; 2) it improves the glue yield by 5.42%; and 3) due to introduction of mechanical processing, time and temperature are controllable, rendering production more repeatable and easily up-scaled. This study examines the extent of market participation among Chăm pottery producers in Vietnam and the factors that influence this extent. The research utilized the total market participation index to assess the level of market participation and Tobit regression to examine the factors influencing market participation. Primary data were collected from a sample of 150 pottery households. The study demonstrates that pottery households are involved in the market to varying degrees. Factors such as family size, hired labourers, production space, self-owned transportation, average distance to customers, amount of advertising, and credit accessibility positively affect their participation in the market. Shipping damage, government assistance, non-pottery income, and education level of household head have a negative effect. The findings indicate that government assistance should consider the requirements of pottery households to develop efficient support measures. The research serves as a useful reference for policymakers and managers in devising strategies to promote both the growth of traditional craft production and the sustained well-being of ethnic groups. As cultural carriers of intangible cultural heritage (ICH), practitioners are key stakeholders in its inheritance and tourism use. Master-apprentice transmission is a major mechanism of generational inheritance. This paper examines ICH masters and apprentices at the Arts & Crafts Museum of Hangzhou, China, and analyzes the cultural composition of handicraft ICH and its intergenerational evolutionary mechanisms. Semi-structured interviews with two generations of practitioners and participant observation were undertaken. Research results reveal that intergenerational evolution involves multifaceted stakeholder interactions centred on practitioners with the support of government, management of the museum and participation of visitors. With patterns of family and master-apprentice inheritance, two generations of practitioners facilitate the evolution of handicraft ICH though both co-creations and conflicts. Second, six cultural attributes for handicraft ICH as of material, pattern, shape, technique, image and system are identified to visualise the process of intergenerational evolution. Third, driven by internal and external factors, ICH evolves through tracks of inheritance, selection and variation as presented through the above six cultural attributes. Moreover, the interdependence of cultural elements highlights the heritage framework of handicraft ICH and reflects the fluidity of authenticity. Men's sheds are community spaces where older, retired men come together to conduct woodworking and other types of craftwork and DIY activities. There is little research on exploring how technology can help us understand shed members' perceived values associated with men's sheds. In order to investigate this further, we designed and deployed a mobile storytelling application called ShedBox for an Australian men's shed for over six weeks. ShedBox allows shed members to share audio-visual stories. Our analysis of resulting 58 stories and follow-up interviews with 13 shed members unpacked three important themes: a sense of comradery, kinship and companionship present within the shed; material and emotional engagement with the space; and, health and wellbeing of shed members. Our results also highlight a strong masculine culture of the space and how the shed is a site of active learning and engagement for its members. Lastly, our conclusion presents suggestions regarding how such forms of storytelling technology can be leveraged in similar contexts, and also how they can be effectively designed to support different demography. High-speed small crafts are extensively used in various environments. However, these planing vessels are prone to motion instabilities, particularly during turning and course-changing maneuvers. Understanding their behavior under a fixed yaw angle is crucial in the early design stages. This paper presents a numerical study to evaluate the influence of yaw angle on the hydrodynamic performance of high-speed planing hulls. The results indicate that the yaw angle has a significant influence on the hull's running attitudes, as well as hydrodynamic forces and moments. At large yaw angles, air is drawn into the roll-down side, resulting in a small dynamic wetted surface area in high-speed cases. A negative pressure region is observed under high-speed conditions, with asymmetric conditions accentuating (mitigating) this negative pressure region on the roll-down (roll-up) sides. The peaks of sectional lift and resistance are typically observed near the stagnation line in most cases. The sectional sway force is more pronounced behind the center of gravity when the planing speed is slightly above the critical velocity of the trim angle, resulting in a positive yaw moment and suggesting a trend toward a reduction in the yaw angle. It is evident that the aerodynamic resistance on the transom surface is considerable in high-speed cases. Protein design and engineering are evolving at an unprecedented pace leveraging the advances in deep learning. Current models nonetheless cannot natively consider non-protein entities within the design process. Here, we introduce a deep learning approach based solely on a geometric transformer of atomic coordinates and element names that predicts protein sequences from backbone scaffolds aware of the restraints imposed by diverse molecular environments. To validate the method, we show that it can produce highly thermostable, catalytically active enzymes with high success rates. This concept is anticipated to improve the versatility of protein design pipelines for crafting desired functions. Advances in deep learning are transforming protein design. People living in residential aged care homes in Australia often have limited opportunities for meaningful social engagement. The present study aimed to characterize the state of intergenerational programs in residential aged care within a nationwide Australian sample. A total of 572 valid survey responses were received. A large number of aged care homes had existing programs, but only 18.2% had active programs; 44.4% reported their programs as temporarily suspended, predominantly due to COVID-19. The most common activities included singing (67.8%), games (56.8%), reading (51.1%) and craft (41.5%). Mental health and wellbeing, opportunity to socialize, and connection with the community were considered as the main benefits. There is consensus on the benefits of well-placed programming and engagement. Several barriers and challenges to engagement exist, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Aged care homes need adequate information and support to increase their ability to offer intergenerational programs between residents and community members. The survey provides insight into intergenerational programs in Australian aged care homes during the COVID-19 pandemic Staff completing the survey reported positive views of the benefits of the programs to both old and young participants The findings highlight the diversity of participants' ages, places, mode of delivery and types of activities – frequently singing, games, reading and craft, but also dancing and reminiscence, and even robotics. While COVID-19 posed significant challenges, there were creative solutions including written letters and shared journals, virtual interaction and simple strategies such as access to areas where residents could observe children at play or in passing. Canada occupies a leadership role in resettling refugees as part of the United Nation's durable solutions to the global refugee crisis. Although resettlement is an important demonstration of international solidarity, it also poses many challenges for policymakers in terms of optimizing integration and settlement outcomes for refugees. Under the Canadian Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP), government officials are responsible for choosing the communities to which Government Assisted Refugees (GARs) are matched and destined. While a significant amount of research has focused on the socio-economic outcomes of resettled refugees, there is a dearth of contemporary research outlining the substantive aspects of matching and destining GARs to their new homes in Canada. Mismatches can lead to refugees' secondary migration, resulting in complicated trajectories of resettlement and integration. Based on interviews with key government officials and settlement providers, this study investigates the factors considered by the Canadian government, specifically, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), when making the match and assesses how they play out in the destining process by focusing on Ontario as a case study. The findings suggest that while factors such as availability of specialized medical services, family and friend connections, and a community's settlement capacity are deemed important, the resettlement process lacks consideration of refugees' individual characteristics and neglects to look at refugees' human capital. Abramtsevo and Talashkino are well known for their handicraft workshops that participated in the revival of Russian folk arts known as kustarnichestvo at the turn of the last century. Typically examined in terms of its stylistic progenitors or as a manifestation of Russia's nationalist politics, kustarnichestvo can also offer unique insights into how craftspeople and consumers related to their natural and built environments. This article examines the materiality of kustar art objects from two perspectives: first, it turns to forests and woodlands as a source of natural resources and ornamental inspiration; then it tackles narratives about how the resulting neo‐Russian style interiors produced a distinctive kind of affect in their beholders. By showing how human subjects understood themselves to be enmeshed in natural and affective ecologies at the fin de siècle, it argues that a movement thoroughly grounded in materialist concerns paradoxically gave rise to a new understanding of the perceiving subject's affective experience. Due to the continuous development of social and economic forms, most of the traditional handicraft forms of industry have been more challenged in the wave of development, and the world UNESCO and the Chinese government have made great efforts. In recent years, the state has promoted cultural confidence, encouraging people to re-focus on the spiritual connection with culture while satisfying their material needs. The trend of great attention to traditional culture and the continuous development of tourism have brought Pingyao lacquerware, a representative traditional handicraft, back to the public's attention. As one of the intangible cultural heritages, it is in urgent need of attention and protection due to the complexity of the craft and the difficulty of passing it on. Nowadays, the experience economy has become the trend of the times, and tourists are not only looking for material products or simple services but are also more and more concerned about their experience in travel activities. Therefore, it is essential to satisfy the personalized experience needs of tourists in the region of Pingyao regarding the lacquerware experience. Given this, this study takes Pingyao lacquerware as the object of research based on the theoretical background of experience design to explore new development paths for Pingyao lacquerware from the perspective of experience. A review of roadway planning and design practices since the early-20th century demonstrates that engineers have increasingly prioritized building and designing roads that are adapted to their surrounding context. Roadbuilding in the early-20th century focused on delivering road facilities able to operate in all weather conditions, accommodate automobiles, and facilitate personal travel and commerce. The growth in automobile ownership required engineers to work towards alleviating congestion and thus resulting in constructing sprawling infrastructure networks that connect urban and suburban areas -- sometimes at the expense of marginalized communities and neighborhood cultures. The late-1990s and early-2000s saw transportation agencies, AASHTO, and NCHRP embrace performance-based approaches to road design that are more sensitive to context. This trend continues today, with novel tools being devised to help engineers carry out a flexible, multimodal, performance-based, and context-sensitive design process built upon the context classification system introduced in A Policy of Geometric Design for Highways and Streets (7th Edition) and expanded through a series of NCHRP research documents. Using W. Broadway Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky, as a case study, this paper illustrates the application of the new context classification system and associated Transportation Expectations to road design. Making use of the latest tools and concepts, the case study shows, will improve project delivery so planners and engineers may also address issues related to public health, community and transportation equity, local cultures, and community needs when crafting design solutions. This study started from the idea that knowledge of visual elements and aesthetics of textile arts, understanding contemporary textile techniques, is a form of reflective learning in which the practice (for example: physical actions in the fabric of the technique, touching and feeling the materials) can lead to the deepening of the creative process, contributing to the creation of an aesthetic that is not only visual, but also deeply material and even technical. This way of integrating the knowledge and values of art into fashion design in an experimental and reflexive manner can be a creative factor, therefore the analysis focused both on the idea of how fashion can be transformed through different ways of making textiles and on understanding the importance of knowing them. The paper considers an online scheduling problem with the effects of both learning and deterioration to minimize the total completion time. More specifically, we assume that the actual processing length of job Jj is p jr = p j r b + at , where pj is the initial processing time of Jj, t is the starting time of Jj, r is the seating arrangement position of Jj, b is the learning factor and a is the deterioration factor, respectively. For this problem, we show that the performance ratio of any deterministic online algorithm is not <2 and provide a best possible online algorithm DSBPT with a competitive ratio of 2. Furthermore, we also present a concise computational simulation study to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm DSBPT, as well as the management implications provided for decision-makers to production optimization. One of the crucial factors in Indonesia’s National Industrial Development Master Plan 2015 - 2035 is enhancing human resources skills and creativity in producing wood/rattan handicrafts. Aesthetic factors are the main requirements for these products due to their cultural and artistic value. In determining the direction of the innovations, it is necessary to understand the product’s development, especially in this regard. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the aesthetic factors used in developing rattan bag handicraft products using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, guided by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). The SLR was conducted based on the journal and proceedings obtained through the Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Springer databases. The contribution of this study was to find aesthetic factors considered for the development of bag product innovation. The results showed that six aesthetic factors were applied in developing rattan bag products: materials, motifs, ethnic/culture, shapes, patterns, and colors.

Abstract Background The traditional knowledge in southern Yemen is rich in wild medicinal and food plants, which has been documented in our previous studies. In addition, other significant and general traditional usage for the daily livelihood requirements of local people (beyond medicinal and food plant uses) has not been studied before and needs urgent documentation. Methods Ethnobotanical data on of wild plants used by local people in southern Yemen were collected by oral questionnaire interviews. Most informants (n = 1020) were local elderly from 15 different localities in southern Yemen. The local names and non-medicinal and non-food uses of plants were identified and analyzed. Results The ethnobotanical data resulted various traditional uses of 73 plant species distributed in 28 families. The most represented families were Fabaceae, Asteraceae and Malvaceae. The most growth forms were trees and shrubs. Seven main and common categories of traditional uses were determined and classified as handicraft, health aids, livestock husbandry and beekeeping, economic and commercial plant products, agriculture tools, construction timber and fuel. The most cited species were identified for Ziziphus spina-christi, Vachellia tortilis, Vachellia nilotica, Anisotes trisulcus, Dracaena hanningtonii (Sansevieria ehrenbergii) and Aerva javanica, which have multi-purpose values of traditional usage. Nine major traditional uses of local wild plants were recorded: handicraft, agriculture tools, products aid general health, economic products, construction timber, livestock husbandry, bee keeping, fuel and ornamental. Conclusions Despite the challenges on local traditional knowledge of wild plants, it still requested vital to many usages of traditional life and still have an economic value and heritage required of develop the daily livelihood level of the local people especially in rural areas. This includes the traditional uses of wild plants in handicraft skills, tools of agriculture, constructions. The importance of the continuity of traditional industries and their transmission to generations lies in the local population’s reliance on local natural resources without relying on external resources in situations such as wars. This is the first study that contributes to documenting and analyzing the indigenous knowledge on traditional general usage of wild plants in southern Yemen.

As an ancient Indonesian art, Batik has been recognized by the United Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Batik is one of the original handicrafts in Indonesia. This research explores three main issues of Bakaran batik legend: community leaders' viewpoint in Juana, Pati Regency; aspects of context and implicatures; and coherences among themes, visual elements, and images. A qualitative method was conducted in this research. It was conducted in February-April 2022 with a case study at Bakaran Juana Pati district. Data collection techniques were employed through in-depth interviews, non-participatory observation, and document analysis. Data was collected using observations and interviews with eight informants. The data was analyzed using pragmatics. The findings revealed that Bakaran batik has its uniqueness explicitly in its patterns. Numerous designs in Bakaran batik patterns are associated with the legend of Nyai Ageng Danowati, a Majapahit Kingdom's Batik expert figure who escaped from Majapahit and then lived in Bakaran village Juana district, Pati Regency. It implicitly has legendary aspects when analyzed in terms of possible patterns. Bakaran village's legendary patterns include the Kembang Druju, the Limaran, the Gandrung, and the Magel Ati. The legend pattern's context is typically connected with the legend of the Batik figure, Nyai Ageng Danowati, and the implica-ture of the legendary pattern is related to the moment of Nyai Ageng Danowati for spending her life while she was on the escapement. The visual elements and the image of the legend motif are coherent, and the visual form of the Motif theme is relevant to Nyai Danowati's life story. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Modular assembly is a compelling pathway to create new proteins, a concept supported by protein engineering and millennia of evolution. Natural evolution provided a repository of building blocks, known as domains, which trace back to even shorter segments that underwent numerous 'copy‐paste' processes culminating in the scaffolds we see today. Utilizing the subdomain‐database Fuzzle, we constructed a fold‐chimera by integrating a flavodoxin‐like fragment into a periplasmic binding protein. This chimera is well‐folded and a crystal structure reveals stable interfaces between the fragments. These findings demonstrate the adaptability of α/β‐proteins and offer a stepping stone for optimization. By emphasizing the practicality of fragment databases, our work pioneers new pathways in protein engineering. Ultimately, the results substantiate the conjecture that periplasmic binding proteins originated from a flavodoxin‐like ancestor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses a subject which became increasingly visible starting with the second decade of the 21st century: the relationship between design and crafts. Following the work hypotheses adopted, a question appears to be natural: are the traditional crafts able to inspire a trend in the evolution of contemporary Romanian design? Several design actions that highlight the opening up and the interest of the designers concerning crafts shows an affirmative response. Designers and design organizations give consistence to the subject and seem to prefigure the evolution of Romanian design in the near future. The relationship between design and crafts is able to articulate in its meaning also the vernacular sense. Romanian designers who created objects together with specialized craftspeople may have a confirmation of the value of their work in the similarity with a contemporary Japanese approach. This article presents the primary results of a research exercise deconstructing transdisciplinary models of intervention bringing social change, dynamization, and positive impact into rural areas through crafts and design collaborations. The experiences analyzed brought together designers, craftspeople, and local communities in dialogue, collaboration, and co-creation connections based on design methods, crafts heritage, land resources, and local knowledge. The tools include a primary literature review and multiple case study mapping and analysis. Qualitative research methods allow us to study the connections between personal, social, organizational, cultural, and environmental factors. The case study methodology has been used to extract complexities and particularities. Data collected has been structured in a comparative table of crucial elements such as collaborative methods, organizational models, creative processes, the role played by crafts and design, and the impact generated. This research exercise aims to identify a framework that systematizes those relevant elements and suggests potential transdisciplinary approaches to foster sustainable social innovation initiatives in rural areas through craftsdesign collaborations. The CraftsDesign Framework will evolve into a collaborative tool kit to be tested, evaluated, and re-designed through workshops in simulated and authentic contexts. The findings from the experience will inform the PhD research project conducted by the researcher aimed at identifying sustainable social innovation solutions based on the occasion of design practice. Handcraft skills provide premodern cultures with an experiential channel to encounter nature both in humans and in their environment. This essay sketches a dialectical overview – the roots of which can be traced via Hegel back to Heraclitus – of how handcrafts are entangled with other meaning-generating semiotic activities and participate in enriching the experiential content of verbal discourses as well. By eroding the handcraft culture, technical and social progress – realized in practice by the industrial revolution and ideologically supported by the movement of Enlightenment – has injured the experiential content of our language and thus impaired our natura experience. Paper umbrellas are one of the crafts included in the intangible cultural heritage of Malang, East Java. Currently, it is known that there is only one group of craftsmen who still produce this paper umbrella craft. Although not many of them, this paper umbrella craft still exists among people who like traditional handicrafts. This is evident from how often paper umbrella crafts appear at craft exhibitions in cities in Indonesia. Consequently, there is a pressing need for in-depth research on paper umbrella craftsmanship in Malang City. A valuable avenue for exploration is the examination of non-verbal communication aspects inherent in paper umbrella craftsmanship. This study aimed to determine the non-verbal communication aspects contained in paper umbrella crafts. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on analyzing non-verbal communication aspects. Data was collected using unstructured interview methods, documentation, and field surveys. The collected data was reduced for analysis using nonverbal communication theory. The study findings are presented descriptively, detailing the observed non-verbal communication aspects. The findings reveal three distinct categories of non-verbal communication aspects in paper umbrella craftsmanship: fixed features, semi-fixed features, and non-fixed features. Fixed features include shapes depicted on the umbrella. Semi fixed feature is a choice of material used to make paper umbrellas, colors, and motifs. The materials used are bamboo and paper. The colors of the umbrellas are red and green. The motif drawn on the umbrella is a floral motif. Flowers are present because they are the favorite shapes of the craftsmen who make umbrellas. The Laweyan Surakarta batik industry center has more than 100 developing batik IKMs. The existence of the Laweyan Surakarta batik IKM has contributed greatly to the revival of the batik industry in Surakarta after experiencing a downturn due to the pandemic. However, the presence of batik artisans in the Laweyan area of Surakarta has not been optimally accommodated, coupled with the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic, leading to an 80% decline in the batik trade. The Indonesian Batik Craftsmen and Entrepreneurs Association (APPBI) is still unable to reach all artisans at the grassroots level. Therefore, batik artisans require guidance to maximize their potential in discovering new innovations related to batik handicraft products. The participatory collaborative approach between craft actors (IKM) and educational institutions is expected to increase the bargaining power of batik artisans. The developed batik craft products are still based on local cultural values and strive to improve product quality by adhering to SNI standards. The participatory collaboration model places artisans as actors and educational institutions as partners. This study aims to develop a diversification model for Laweyan Surakarta batik products through a participatory collaborative approach involving educational institutions and batik craft centers to strengthen export potential. This study employs the development research model from Borg and Gall and Mc Kenny's development research, which is then modified into 2 steps. Background: Hip osteoarthritis (HOA) is a leading cause of disability increasing with age and is more prevalent in women and in various physically demanding occupations. This systematic review identifies and summarises occupational exposures for women in physically demanding occupations and discusses sex differences and consequences. Methods: In this systematic review, we searched various electronic databases for reports published between date of database inception and October 2022. We included cohort studies and case-control studies that assessed the association between exposure to physically demanding occupations and the development of HOA. We then assessed the methodological quality of selected studies, extracted relative effects, compared the risk for women and men and meta-analytically reviewed the effects of physically demanding occupations. All steps were based on a study protocol published in PROSPERO (CRD42015016894). Results: We included six cohort studies and two case-control studies in this systematic review. These studies showed a considerably increased risk of developing HOA in both sexes. Women working in traditionally female-dominated occupations such as cleaning, sales, catering, childcare and hairdressing that are physically demanding, have a higher risk of developing HOA than men in similarly physically demanding occupations. Conversely, in traditionally male-dominated occupations with a high heterogeneity of work activities, such as agriculture, crafts, construction, as well as in low-skilled occupations, the risk was higher for men. One exception are health occupations, which are grouped together with a wide range of other technical occupations, making it difficult to draw conclusions. Conclusions: Existing studies indicate an association between various occupations with a high physical workload and an increased risk of developing HOA. Occupational prevention and individual health promotion strategies should focus on reducing the effects of heavy physical workloads at work. The goal of the project accounted in the present article was to produce a perfect replica of the "mummy" of Pharaoh Ramses II with organic and sustainable materials and to let it be displayed without a showcase and even touched by visitors in a museum. The replica was produced by an integrated team of experts through 3D modeling and handcraft. The "mummy" was the core of the exhibition entitled "The mummy of Ramses. The immortal pharaoh" visited by more than 5000 people for four months (68 opening days). The interaction of visitors with the touchable embalmed body was thus studied, as well as the preservation state of the recreated mummified skin. In Lai Xá Village, Vietnam, studio photography is the village handicraft. Counter to Walter Benjamin's characterization of the click of a button, privileging eye over hand, but typical of many craft traditions, photographers there describe painstaking apprenticeships through which they learned to master the tools and materials of their craft. They learned to compensate for the shifting properties of light, climate, humidity, and irregular supplies of electricity, chemicals and printing paper, and adapted to changing regimes of technique and labor organization. As in many other craft traditions, apprentices often acquired their most valuable knowledge by stealth. We argue that studio photography belongs within contemporary discussions of craft as a handed, adaptive, engaged, small-scale social practice, and that craft awareness enables a richer ethnographic understanding of the work of studio photographers, both material and social. The public‐elite policy feedback mechanism of the Social Construction Framework (SCF) postulates that the public rewards policymakers for the appropriate distribution of benefits and burdens to target populations. In this article we test a key part of this dynamic by examining public receptivity to policy design features as a function of target population choice. We conduct a national survey experiment of approximately 3350 Americans. Our instrument asks respondents to indicate support or opposition to a range of policy tools in a suite of six climate change policies, but varies who would be responsible for options based upon Schneider and Ingram's idealized types. Our research design tests the independent effects of deservingness and power foundational to the construction of target populations in the SCF. We find, in general, deservingness to be a stronger predictor of support for policy tools than notions of power. We also identify situations where deservingness acts independently of power in ways not anticipated by the SCF—notably public favor for burdens on powerful groups. Our findings offer implications for theoretical and empirical development of the SCF regarding the influence of policymakers' perceptions of public acceptance of policy design in crafting public policies. Handicraft examples are the most important documents that reflect the cultural identity of a nation. As a result of recent studies on handicrafts, different perspectives have been revealed and new results have been revealed. Metal products constitute a part of the handicrafts, which are divided into different categories. Candlesticks, which constitute an important group of metal works, are known to be used to illuminate and illuminate spaces when there was no electricity. Although the main purpose of these works seems to be to illuminate, in addition to being functional, they also have some symbolic meanings. In this study, a group of candlesticks preserved in the Mardin Museum is discussed. The candlesticks discussed were produced as table and hand candlesticks depending on their usage area. While only one of the candlesticks is in the showroom, the remaining four examples are preserved in storage. It was understood that the candlesticks examined were produced with bronze and copper materials, using casting and forging techniques. It is understood that the works, which are kept simple in terms of decoration, are more prominent with their functions. ObjectiveOlder individuals face a higher likelihood of developing dementia. The rate of cognitive decline resulting from dementia is not equivalent for all, as some patients with dementia are able to function independently longer than others, despite having similar disease burden. The cognitive reserve (CR) theory provides one explanation for the differing rate of decline. CR suggests that there are factors—most notably, educational attainment and occupational attainment—that can protect against the cognitive decline. Although the beneficial effects of these notable CR factors are clear, not all are easily modifiable. Participation in leisure activities may represent a more easily modifiable factor. Some research hints at beneficial effects of leisure activities, although specific leisure activities have not been well examined. The present study examined the relations between handicraft art leisure activities (HALAs) and multiple cognitive domains. MethodArchival WAIS-IV and demographic data for 50 California retirement community residents were examined. ResultsHALA participation accounted for statistically significant variance in working memory performance (R2 =.40, β =.24%) over and above the established CR factors of age, depression, educational attainment, and occupational attainment. In addition, HALA participation was related to a better ability to perform abstract visual information tasks (Block Design subtest, r =.28, p =.05) and non-verbal reasoning tasks (Visual Puzzles subtest, r =.38, p =.008). ConclusionsHALA participation among older adults could contribute to the retention of cognitive function, supporting the role of HALA participation as a CR factor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this research was to denote the influence of the Exporta Fácil Program on the export of handicrafts from Lima 2014. For this reason, the research was developed within the framework of the quantitative approach, with a causal correlational field design. The study covered a population of 5,451 and a sample of 421. Two previously validated instruments were applied. For the validation of the hypotheses, the own Ordinal Regression Test was used with the purpose of clarifying the Cause-Effect relationship. The results show that the Exporta Fácil program contributed to Lima 2014 handicraft exports, after accepting the hypothesis after the Chi Square (X2) statistical test; Because the data tends to adjust to approximately 7.3 percent. Purpose - Technology is considered a tool of competency enhancement and a source of innovation and competitive advantage for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Although many studies examined the drivers and barriers of technology adoption in SMEs, little is known about handicraft companies (HCs) operating in emerging market settings. This paper aims to analyse and better understand HCs' attitudes and behaviours towards technology implementation. Design/Methodology/Approach - We conducted an in-depth qualitative analysis to uncover the idiosyncratic experiences related to new technology adoption in HCs located in Morocco. We drew on the underlying principles of grounded theory approach because it allows for new realities and novel interpretations of complex phenomena to emerge directly from the field. Findings - We developed a grounded theory of technology adoption in HCs operating in emerging market settings. This resulted in the identification of a comprehensive process that managers rely on before deciding on a new technology, which is composed of three stages: (1) need recognition, (2) technology approval, and (3) adoption decision. We have also uncovered the intervening conditions that play a crucial role in technology-related decision-making at each stage. Practical Implications - Our study could help managers to gain an in-depth understanding of the intricacies associated with technology adoption in HCs and to be better equipped when attempting to implement new technologies in their own entrepreneurial firms. Originality/Value - This research goes beyond the mere identification of obstacles and motives of technology adoption by advancing a well-defined framework for usage in the understudied handicraft sector in emerging market settings.
