The COSINE-100 experiment is designed to test the DAMA experiment which claimed an observation of a dark matter signal from an annual modulation in their residual event rate. To measure the 1 %-level signal amplitude, it is crucial to control and monitor nearly all environmental quantities that might systematically mimic the signal. The environmental monitoring also helps ensure a stable operation of the experiment. Here, we describe the design and performance of the centralized environmental monitoring system for the COSINE-100 experiment., 13 pages, 11 figures

The first phase of the Advanced Mo-based Rare Process Experiment (AMoRE-I), an experimental search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0$\nu\beta\beta$) of $^{100}$Mo in calcium molybdate (CMO) crystal using cryogenic techniques, is in preparation at the YangYang underground laboratory (Y2L) in South Korea. A GEANT4 based Monte Carlo simulation was performed for background estimation in the first-phase the AMoRE-I detector and shield configuration. Background sources such as $^{238}$U, $^{232}$Th, $^{40}$K, $^{235}$U, and $^{210}$Pb were simulated from inside the crystals, surrounding materials, outer shielding walls of the Y2L cavity. The estimated background rate in the region of interest was found to be $< 1.5 \times 10^{-3}$ counts/keV/kg/yr (ckky). The effects of random coincidences between background and two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo were estimated as a potential background source and its estimated rate was $< 2.3 \times 10^{-4}$ ckky.

KSTAR has demonstrated divertor heat flux broadening during edge-localized mode (ELM) crash suppression using ITER-like three-row resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) for the first time. To address a couple of critical issues in ITER RMP, robust ELM-crash-suppression methodology has been explored at low q 95 and established in KSTAR using low-n RMPs. Taking full advantage of the ITER-like three-row in-vessel control coils (IVCC) in KSTAR, a set of intentionally misaligned RMP configurations (IMC) was tested to investigate whether or not IMC could be compatible with ELM crash suppression, while minimizing electromagnetic loads on RMP coils. As a result, the ITER-like three-row IMCs were found not only to have been compatible with the ELM crash suppression, but also to have broadened the divertor heat fluxes in the vicinity of the outer strike point. In comparison, the two-row RMPs have rarely affected the near scrape-off layer (SOL) heat flux despite slightly broadened profile change in the far-SOL. Since the divertor heat flux broadening reflects the dispersal of the peaked near-SOL heat flux, the experimental outcome is quite favorable to the ITER choice of three rows, instead of two rows. Nonetheless, since the IMC-driven broadening observed in the attached plasmas in KSTAR might appear substantially different in the partially detached plasmas in ITER, additional investigation has been conducted to see if RMP-driven, ELM crash suppression could be compatible with detached plasmas. Although no detached plasmas have been identified with ELM crash suppression yet, significantly reduced divertor heat flux was confirmed in high density, ELM-crash-suppressed plasmas at q 95 = 3.4 using n = 2 RMPs. These new findings elevate the confidence level about the ITER RMP system, while the remaining uncertainties need to be further clarified using the three-row IVCCs in KSTAR.

Aims To monitor bacterial diversity of ISO Class 8 pharmaceutical clean room environment using conventional culture-based methods and pyrosequencing analysis. Methods and Results Bacterial isolates were obtained through viable particulate air monitoring, passive air monitoring and surface-monitoring procedures. A total of 157 bacterial isolates were obtained and assigned to four different phyla, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Deinococcus-Thermus, encompassing 52 species of 24 genera based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The genera Micrococcus and Staphylococcus were found as the main bacterial groups among the isolates. However, a big discrepancy was found between the culture based and pyrosequencing results. A total of 11 409 quality reads were obtained from the pyrosequencing analysis, and the subsequent phylogenetic analysis indicated that Proteobacteria was the most abundant group at phylum level, followed by Actinobacteria and Firmicutes. Bacillus, Propionibacterium and Acinetobacter were identified as the most abundant genera by the pyrosequencing analysis. Conclusions The culture-based results were in line with previous reports on the airborne bacterial composition of various environments, but the pyrosequencing analysis revealed a unique diversity of bacteria in this case. No significant pathogens above Riskgroup 2 were found from either culture based or pyrosequencing studies. Significance and Impact of the Study The presence of various bacterial taxa including a number of groups, whose presence in air is previously unknown, was confirmed through this analysis. The main source of bacteria in the indoor air environment of pharmaceutical processes is likely human, but no significant primary pathogens were detected. Culture-based analysis may give limited information on the bacterial diversity of air environment.

A decade long operation of KSTAR has contributed significantly to operation of superconducting tokamak device and advancement of tokamak physics which will be beneficial for the ITER and K-DEMO programs. Even with limited heating capability, various conventional as well as new operating regimes have been explored and achieved great performance. As examples, a long pulse H-mode operation with and without the ELM-crash was well over 60 seconds and over 30 seconds, respectively. Unique capabilities of KSTAR allowed to improve control capability of harmful instabilities and have been instrumental for many exciting new physics. The intricate IVCC system has been a great perturbation tool in studying of threshold power of the L/H transition in the presence of non-axisymmetric fields, rotation physics due to NTV effects, heat dispersal in divertor system and predictive control of the ELM-crash with a priori modeling. The state-of-the-art 2D/3D microwave imaging systems uncovered many new exciting new physics in the MHD and turbulence transport physics. They are validation of q0agt;1 right after the sawtooth crash, self-consistent asymmetric distribution of plasma turbulence amplitude and flow in the presence of 2/1 island, and underlying physics of low frequency turbulence induced by 3D resonant fields in suppression of the ELM-crash through non-linear interaction with the ELMs. In the turbulence area, non-diffusive "avalanche" transport event and role of quiescent coherent mode in confinement are studied. To accommodate anticipating higher performance of the KSTAR plasmas with the increased heating powers (NBI and ECH), new divertor/internal interface with full active cooling system will be implemented after the increased heating power systems and new current drive systems are fully tested. Upgrade plan for the internal hardware and efficient current drive system may allow a long pulse operation of higher performance plasmas at βNagt;3.0 with fbs~0.5 and Tiagt;10keV. a#13; a#13

Design of the cooling channels of a plastic injection mold affects the quality and the productivity of the injection processes. In the injection process, the melted resin with high temperature enters the mold cavity, and just after the cavity is filled the heat should be dissipated through the cooling channels simultaneously. The purpose of this study is to analyse the heat transfer phenomenon and to estimate the temperature distribution in the mold to evaluate the cooling effect of the channels. The injection mold is assumed to have cooling channels of circular cross section and each channel has the same coolant flow rate. and The cavity has a rectangular shape. The results show that as the cooling channels get closer to the cavity surface, the cooling efficiency increases as might easily be guessed. However, due to the final hot resin flow from the gate an intensive cooling is required in that region.

The battery pack, a main component of NEV(Neighborhood Electric Vehicle), needs cooling system when it is charging or discharging to prevent the degradation of the battery charging efficiency. The purpose of this study is to analyse the effects of cooling methods, changing positions of inlet and outlet and changing area ratios of inlet and outlet. It has been observed that in the point of uniform cooling, suction from the exit side is more efficient than blowing from the inlet. And there is a suitable inlet/outlet area ratio in maximizing the mass flow rate. A commercial code, STAR-CCM+(ver. 4.02), was used for the numerical study.

Fast sawtooth crash of m = 1 mode (tens of µs) is a common MHD phenomenon in the core of tokamak plasma. In KSTAR plasmas with localized heating and current drive close to the sawtooth inversion radius (ρ inv), very slow sawtooth crashes are observed with time scales of a few ms. Scan of heating deposition along with power modulation revealed two different mechanisms of the slow crash with the help of detailed 2D imaging diagnostics. The slow crash appears with slow heat transport of the remained m = 1 mode after the partial crash of outer multiple m/n = 1 modes, or with the growth of an island formed on ρ inv when the heating deposition locates just inside ρ inv or just outside ρ inv. In the heating power modulation experiment, the slow crash with the island was sustained for the redistribution time scale of the driven current by a very short blip of heating.

The sorption of Fe(III), Al(III) and Pt(IV) from the individual and mixed chloride solution was investigated by using PC88A resin. With the increase of HCl concentration to 5 M, the distribution coefficient of Fe decreased slowly, while that of Al decreased rapidly and the distribution coefficient of Pt was nearly zero in our experimental range. Batch experiments showed that it was possible to extract both Fe and Al simultaneously by adjusting HCl and PC88A resin concentrations. However, continuous extraction chromatographic experiments indicated that simultaneous sorption of Al as well as Fe was difficult in our experimental range. Two extraction chromatographic steps would extract most of Fe and 90% of Al from the mixed solution, while Pt was not extracted. Extraction chromatography of the mixed chloride solution with PC88A resin was found to be fast and simple.

Safe and robust process design relies on knowledge of the evolution of the mechanical properties in a tube during hydroforming. The manufacturing of tubular shapes generally consists of three main stages: bending, preforming, and expansion. The latter is usually called hydroforming. As a result of these three steps, the final product’s strain hardening history is nonlinear. In the present study, the strain hardening behavior during hydroforming was experimentally investigated. The variation of local flow stress and/or local hardness was used as an index of the strain hardening during the various steps and the local flow stress and/or local hardness were used with respective correlations to determine the effective strain. The strain hardening behavior during hydroforming after preforming has been successfully analyzed by using the relationships between hardness, flow stress, and effective strain for variable pre-strains prior to hydroforming. The comparison of predicted hardness with measured hardness confirms that the methodology used in this study is feasible, and that the strain hardening behavior can be quantitatively estimated with good accuracy.

The thermal shield system of ITER plays the role of reducing heat loads transferred by thermal radiation and conduction from warm components to the components and structures that operate at 4.5 K. In the design of thermal shields, it is of importance to ensure that they maintain thermal loads within the specified design criteria. In the present work, a study is conducted on thermal analyses in order to confirm that the thermal shield design can accommodate the thermal loads during the plasma operation state and the baking state of the ITER vacuum vessel. Design of the cooling tube layout of a vacuum vessel thermal shield is followed based on the results of thermal analyses. It is demonstrated that the present results can be applied to the detailed design of the ITER thermal shield system.

Strain hardening behavior during hydroforming has been experimentally investigated. The variation of flow stress was used as an index of strain hardening during respective processes and the flow stress was estimated from the correlationship between flow stress and effective strain. The local hardness after hydroformig was also predicted by effective strain. By using the inter-relationships between hardness-flow stress-effective strain at variable pre-strains, the strain hardening behavior during hydroforming has been successfully analyzed. The comparison of predicted hardness with measured hardness confirmed that the methodology used in this study was feasible and the strain hardening behavior can be quantitatively estimated.

The wear between piston ring face and cylinder liner is an extremely unpredictable and hard-to-reproduce phenomenon that significantly decreases engine performance. This study will discuss characteristics of wear between hard and soft piston ring coatings with running surface of cylinder liner. Detailed tribological analysis by using Pin-on-Disk(POD) testing machine describes the lubricity mechanism between piston ring coatings and cylinder liner at different temperature with and without oil. The effect of surface roughness of the cylinder liner on the friction coefficient and wear amount of piston ring coatings will also be analyzed. To simulate scuffing mechanism between piston ring and cylinder liner, accelerated lab testing was performed. This study will provide the data from tribological testing of hard and soft piston ring coatings against cylinder liner. Furthermore, the microstructures and morphological features of the surface and the near-surface materials during wear will be investigated. From the scuffing test by using POD testing machine, scuffing mechanisms for the soft and hard coating will be analyzed and experimentally confirmed.

We report a precise measurement of the masses of the $\Xi_c(2645)$ and $\Xi_c(2815)$ baryons using a data sample of 414 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle collaboration at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. The states $\Xi_c(2645)^{0,+}$ are observed in the $\Xi_c^{+,0}\pi^{-,+}$ decay modes, while the $\Xi_c(2815)^{0,+}$ are reconstructed in the $\Xi_c(2645)^{+,0}\pi^{-,+}$ decay modes. The following mass splittings are determined: $m_{\Xi_c(2645)^+} - m_{\Xi_c(2645)^0} = (-0.1 \pm 0.3 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.6 {(\rm syst})) {\rm MeV}/{\rm c}^2$ and $m_{\Xi_c(2815)^+} - m_{\Xi_c(2815)^0} = (-3.4 \pm 1.9 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.9 {(\rm syst})) {\rm MeV}/{\rm c}^2$ with a much better precision than the current world averages. We also observe a new decay mode, $\Xi_c(2980)^{0,+} \to \Xi_c(2645)^{+,0}\pi^{-,+}$.

Sidewall curl is the curvature that results from non-uniform through-thickness strain present in the sheet stamping process which involves material flow over a die radius. In order to understand and control curl for tight fit-up tolerances, an analytical model that can provide a reliable measure for the amount of curl would be very helpful. In this study, a model is developed based on the moment-curvature relationship during bending-under-tension operations. For the verification of analytical model, sidewall curl is experimentally measured after deformation of a strip using a bending-under-tension test system. The results show a consistent relationship between the theoretically predicted value and the experimentally obtained one, especially in regions of high curl.

In order to understand and control sidewall curl for tight fit-up tolerances, an analytical model that can provide a reliable measure for the amount of curl would be very helpful. In this study, a model is developed based on the moment-curvature relationship during bending-under-tension operations. The analytical model includes the variables of applied tensile force, the yield strength, the elastic modulus, the bending radius, and the sheet thickness, which are the primary factors affecting sidewall curl during sheet stamping operations. For the accuracy of analytical model, six possible deformation patterns are proposed on the basis of material properties and bending geometries.

Today, the use of the sound absorptive material is increasing to improve the room acoustics in the auditorium and music hall, etc. Usually, the sound absorption materials have been used to enhance the performance of a noise barrier and improve the room acoustics in construction site. Generally, the sound absorbtion coefficients are the most important factor reflecting the sound absorbtion performance. There are two methods to measure the sound absorption coefficient. The first one is the reverberation room method, and the second is the impedance tube method. In this study, we measure the sound absorbtion coefficients using these two methods, and then we compared the results of the sound absorbtion coefficients to look into the difference of results between reverberation room method and impedance tube method. Also we compared the results of the sound absorbtion coefficients with respect to the size of sample and the volume of reverberation room. From the experiment, we could see that the sound absorbtion coefficients are measured equally for different sample size. But the sound absorbtion coefficients are measured differently according to test methods and test conditions.

Due to their superior piezoelectric coefficients, PZN-PT ((1-x)Pb(Zn/sub 1/3/Nb/sub 2/3/)O/sub 3/-xPbTiO/sub 3/) and PMN-PT [(1-x)Pb(Mg/sub 1/3/Nb/sub 2/3/)O/sub 3/-xPbTiO/sub 3/] are viewed as possible substitutes for conventional PZT in advanced piezodevices. This paper presents noncontact displacement measurements in small rectangular PZN-PT and PMN-PT crystal rods. We propose a new phase-shift-interferometry-based technique for static and dynamic axial displacement measurement. The measurement technique makes use of the fact that the sinusoidal intensity data from the same pixels in two interferograms with different phase shifts form an elliptic Lissajous curve. We can accurately estimate phase-shift steps by fitting the elliptic Lissajous curve by least squares. Actuator displacements are then calculated from the estimated phase-shift steps. In this paper, the proposed technique was integrated with a Mirau interferometeric microscope with a machine vision system. This optomechatronic measurement system was used to measure the piezoelectric coefficient d/sub 31/ of -poled PZN-PT and PMN-PT single crystals as well as hysteresis. Simulations and experiments demonstrate that the proposed technique is robust against the influence of intensity noise in interferograms.

Nitric oxide (NO, a vasodilator) and endothelin-1 (ET-1, a powerful vasoconstrictor) participate in the regulation of brain’s microcirculation influencing each other’s expression and synthesis. Following injury to the brain, NO is derived largely from the inducible form of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). We used Marmarou’s model of traumatic brain injury (TBI) to study the cerebral blood flow and expression (mRNA) of ET-1 in rats that were pretreated with antisense iNOS oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs). Intracerebroventricular application of iNOS ODNs resulted in reduced synthesis of iNOS as detected by Western blot analysis. The cerebral blood flow (measured by laser Doppler flowmetry), generally decreased after TBI, was further markedly reduced in the treated animals and remained at low levels up to 48 h post-TBI. The expression of ET-1 (detected by in situ hybridization in cortex and hippocampus) was increased 2–3-fold following TBI alone and this increase reached 5–6-fold in animals pretreated with antisense iNOS ODNs. The results indicate that most likely, NO, generated primarily by iNOS, suppresses ET-1 production and that a decrease of NO results in upregulation of ET-1 via transcriptional and translational mechanisms. Increased availability of ET-1 at the vascular bed and the neuropil may contribute to the altered microvascular reactivity and reduced perfusion of the brain following TBI.

This article describes real-time gaze control using position-based visual servoing. The main control objective of the system is to enable a gaze point to track the target so that the image feature of the target is located at each image center. The overall system consists of two parts: the vision process and the control system. The vision system extracts a predefined color feature from images. An adaptive look-up table method is proposed in order to get the 3-D position of the feature within the video frame rate under varying illumination. An uncalibrated camera raises the problem of the reconstructed 3-D positions not being correct. To solve the calibration problem in the position-based approach, we constructed an end-point closed-loop system using an active head-eye system. In the proposed control system, the reconstructed position error is used with a Jacobian matrix of the kinematic relation. The system stability is locally guaranteed, like image-based visual servoing, and the gaze position was shown to converge to the feature position. The proposed approach was successfully applied to a tracking task with a moving target in some simulations and some real experiments. The processing speed satisfies the property of real time.

This experiment was prosecuted to estimate the carcass traits and their relationships in Hanwoo steers. The mean carcass weight(CWT), back fat thickness (BFT), meat, bone, intra- muscular fat (IMF) and eye muscle area (EMA) of steers were 300.27 kg, 9.23 mm, 58.99%, 12.92%, 28.08% and 74.00 , respectively. The pHB(before aging), pHA(after aging), cook loss before aging() and cook loss after aging () were 5.32, 5.60, 16.43% and 19.21%, respectively. It was also found that the MS and FC were 3.67 and 3.17, respectively. The EMA and quantity index (QIX) were positively correlated with CWT, meat% and bone% but negatively correlated with IMF%. The BFT was positively correlated with CWT and meat% but negatively correlated with bone% and IMF%. The pH (both before and after aging) was negatively correlated with CL (both before and after aging), water loss during freezing (WLF) and FC. The muscle score(MS) was negatively correlated with CL but positively correlated with WLF and FC. The ARM, HRD, CHW and CTM increased with the increasing of fat% and sharply decreased with the increasing of meat% in the carcass.

Recent studies suggest that the gene encoding aldose reductase, the enzyme that converts glucose to sorbitol, may confer susceptibility to microvascular disease. The aim of this study therefore, was to investigate the relationship between the aldose reductase gene and type 2 diabetic microvascular complications such as diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy. DNA from 127 Korean patients with type 2 diabetes was typed for an (AC) n dinucleotide repeat polymorphic marker at the 5′-end of the aldose reductase gene using polymerase chain reaction. No significant difference in the frequency of the putative risk allele Z−2 was found in patients of nephropathy and retinopathy groups compared with the uncomplicated group (32.2, 34.1 vs. 25.1%, respectively, P >0.05). Similarly, no difference was found in the frequency of the putative protective allele Z+2 among any of the study groups. In conclusion, the results of the study in Korean type 2 diabetic patients do not support the hypothesis that polymorphism at the 5′ end of the aldose reductase gene contributes to the susceptibility to diabetic microvascular complications.

A new method of actively modifying the plasma-wall interaction was tested on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor. A laser was used to introduce a directed lithium aerosol into the discharge scrape-off layer. The lithium introduced in this fashion ablated and migrated preferentially to the limiter contact points. This allowed the plasma-wall interaction to be influenced in situ and in real time by external means. Significant improvement in energy confinement and fusion neutron production rate as well as a reduction in the plasma Zeff have been documented in a neutral beam heated plasma. The introduction of a metallic aerosol into the plasma edge increased the internal inductance of the plasma column and also resulted in prompt heating of core electrons in ohmic plasmas. Preliminary evidence also suggests that the introduction of an aerosol leads to both edge poloidal velocity shear and edge electric field shear.

The process e + e − → Z γγ→ q q γγ is studied in 0.5 fb−1 of data collected with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies between 130.1 GeV and 201.7 GeV. Cross sections are measured and found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations. The study of the least energetic photon constrains the quartic gauge boson couplings to −0.008 GeV−2

To study the quench in the CICC, the numerical analysis code was developed. The fully implicit time integration of upwind scheme for finite volume method is utilized to discretize the equations on the staggered mesh. The scheme of adaptive mesh is proposed for the moving boundary problem and the time term is discretized by the /spl theta/-implicit scheme. The discretized equations are solved by the IMSL. The error analysis of this method is performed by various step-sizes of time and space. The thermal hydraulic behavior of the CICC used in KSTAR is studied.

The induced voltage in the Samsung Superconducting Test Facility (SSTF) is analyzed according to the calculation of self-inductance and mutual inductance. The voltage induced by blip and compensating coils in the main coils is about 6.4 V. In order to charge the main coils, the power supply must provide the minimum voltage of 1.1 kV. The compensating coils have an influence on the field distribution. The compensating coils result in the decreasing center field about 2.67%. AC losses that include the coupling, hysteresis and eddy losses are calculated in the main, blip and compensating coils. It leads to the temperature rise of about 8 K in main coils.

We report on measurements of the inclusive production rate of Σ+ and Σ0 baryons in hadronic Z decays collected with the L3 detector at LEP. The Σ+ baryons are detected through the decay Σ+→pπ0, while the Σ0 baryons are detected via the decay mode Σ0→Λγ. The average numbers of Σ+ and Σ0 per hadronic Z decay are measured to be: NΣ++NΣ̄+=0.114±0.011stat±0.009syst NΣ0+NΣ̄0=0.095±0.015stat±0.013syst. These rates are found to be higher than the predictions from Monte Carlo hadronization models and analytical parameterizations of strange baryon production., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas
