The cross-sections of deuteron-induced nuclear reactions suitable for ion beam analysis, measured in different laboratories, are often significantly different. In the present work, differential cross-sections of 27Al(d,p) and 27Al(d,α) reactions were measured, and the cross sections benchmarked with thick target spectra obtained from pure aluminium for the first time in two independent laboratories. The 27Al(d,p) and (d,α) differential cross-sections were measured between 1.4 and 2 MeV at scattering angles of 165°, 150°, and 135° in the VDGT laboratory in Tehran (Iran), and the same measurements for detector angle of 150° were repeated from scratch, including target making, with independent equipment on the SAFIR platform at INSP in Paris (France). The results of these two measurements at 150° are in good agreement, and for the first time a fitted function is proposed to describe the Al-cross sections for which no suitable theoretical expression exists. The obtained differential cross-sections were validated through benchmarking, by fitting with SIMNRA deuteron-induced particle spectra obtained from a high purity bulk Al target at both labs for deuteron incident energies between 1.6 and 2 MeV. The thick target spectra are well-reproduced. The evaluated and benchmarked cross sections have been uploaded to the ion beam analysis nuclear data library database (www-nds.iaea.org/ibandl/).

Hydrogen glow discharge cleaning (H-GDC) is a routine conditioning procedure for the modern tokamaks and the future fusion machines, including ITER. Due to the low energy of hydrogen ions in glow discharge plasmas, the probability of any considerable damage to the plasma-facing components was mainly ignored. In this work, Tungsten, as the primary candidate for the plasma-facing materials in tokamaks, is considered for studies regarding effects of the H-GDC procedure on the material during a routine vacuum vessel conditioning in Damavand tokamak. After performing routine H-GDC using pure hydrogen, the formation of loosely attached nanostructured bundles (NSBs) on the surface of the tungsten samples was observed. The presence of the NSBs, which can be a source of dust, would be significant due to their possible effects on the functionality of the future fusion plasma devices. In this work the absolute differential cross sections of the 18O(d,pγ)19O (Eγ = 1376 keV) ,18O(d,nγ)19F (Eγ = 1357 keV) and 16O(d,pγ)17O (Eγ = 871 keV) reactions were measured for the isotopic analysis of oxygen by DIGE technique. The energy of the incident deuterons was varied from 590 to 1994 keV in steps of 10 keV. Gamma-rays and backscattered deuterons were collected simultaneously by an HPGe detector at an angle of 90° and an ion implanted Si detector at a scattering angle of 165° with respect to the beam direction. An anodic Ta216,18O5 thin layer on tantalum was used throughout the cross sections measurement. The validity of obtained cross sections was checked by benchmarking experiment with a thick Y2O3 target. The overall systematic uncertainty of the measured cross section data was estimated to be better than 9%.

Digital signal processing has shown promise as a reliable approach for nuclear radiation spectroscopy. In this paper, the charge-to-digital conversion technique was applied to neutron-gamma discrimination. The method is based on the direct comparison of the charge at the fast and slow components of the anode signal of the scintillator detector. The performance of the technique was tested using experimental investigation by 252Cf source and D-D neutron generator. The minimum detectable energy for reasonable separation was found to be around 0.2 MeVee. The FOM of the discrimination parameter was maximized by the optimum selection of the charge integration parameters. Excellent discrimination between neutron and gamma signals was confirmed by the presented setup. The results confirmed that the presented technique can replace analog nuclear electronics conventionally uses for pulse shape discrimination.

Four samples of nominally pure KCl crystals and doped with Zn2+ impurities are grown by the Czochralski method and characterized by X-ray diffraction and Proton Induced X-ray Emission techniques. Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) is performed to obtain information on the cation vacancy type defects and their evolution under doping. The results of the PALS experiment indicate that doping KCl by Zn2+ ions, at first increases the concentration of mono vacancies and in the second stage leads the creation of divacancy sites. Coincidence Doppler Broadening Spectroscopy (CDBS) is carried out to obtain the chemical environment of positron annihilation sites. The results of CDBS show that cation vacancies have a significant role in the annihilation process. An interesting observation is the participation of Zn2+ cations in the positron annihilation process which confirms that positrons are not completely localized on the anion sites. The internal consistency between the results of PALS and CDBS experiments is also clarified.

Differential cross sections of the 24 Mg(d,p 0,1,2,3,4 ) reactions were obtained in the range E d,lab = 1.2–2 MeV and at the scattering angles of 90°, 135°, 150° and 165° using a thin Mg target having thickness of 76.7 ± 3.1 μg/cm 2 . The cross section values were determined with an average energy step of ∼25 keV while the detailed measurements were carried out with an energy step of ∼5 keV around the resonance peaks. Elastic scattering data for three steep backward angles (135°, 150° and 165°) were also studied for the same incident deuteron energy range and steps. The results were compared with those of the previous studies. Moreover, the validity of the measured data has been benchmarked using a thick Mg target at two deuteron beam energies of 1.7 and 2 MeV.

In the present work, differential cross section values of the 16O(d,d0) reaction were obtained for Ed,lab = 900–2000 keV, at four scattering angles, namely at 90°, 135°, 150° and 165° using a thin SiO target having a thickness of (910 ± 36) × 1015 at/cm2. The cross section values were determined with an energy step of ∼10 keV while, the detailed measurements were carried out with an energy step of ∼5 keV around the resonance peaks. The results were compared with those of the previous studies.

Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA) and more specifically d-NRA is a suitable technique for 16 O detection on or near surface of a compound containing heavy elements. The main problem of d-NRA is the limited number of NRA differential cross section data sets and their differences. The differential cross sections of 16 O(d,p 0,1 ) reactions were measured in the present work for E d,lab = 700–1800 keV, at four scattering angles, namely at 90°, 135°, 150° and 165° which are suitable for NRA. Differential cross sections were collected with an energy step of ∼10 keV. However, detailed measurements were carried out with an energy step of ∼2 keV around resonances. The results are compared with previous studies and the similarities and differences are discussed.

Positron Annihilation Lifetime and Doppler Broadening spectroscopy of positron annihilation radiation are performed in four different polymers. The size of elementary free volume sites and their chemical environments are determined. It is shown that polymers with different groups of C–H, C O, and C–F can be distinguished by their orbital electron momentum spectrum. Correlation between parameters of the PALS and CDBS techniques in situations involving O-Ps formation at different chemical environments are clarified. The results indicate that both the S and W-parameters show a linear correlation with the size of elementary free volume sites of the polymers. Moreover, for polymers belonging to C O and C–F groups, the effect of positron trapping by polar groups on the probability of O-Ps formation is discussed.

A 2D digital spectrometer for coincidence measurement of Doppler broadening of positron annihilation radiation is developed and tested. The spectrometer is based on a 14-bit waveform digitizer which gives the possibility of fast and direct sampling of the preamplifier signals of the HPGe detectors and preserves the information required by the physics of Doppler broadening spectroscopy. Some features of the digital spectrometer are compared with its analog counterpart. Superior energy resolution, better peak symmetry, effective elimination of ballistic deficit and better stabilization of peak position are the advantages of the digital spectrometer. The performance of the digital spectrometer to support the CDBS experiment is tested by investigation on the electronic structure of some elements at 1st series of transition metals. The results show that the spectrometer is sensitive enough to distinguish the electronic structure of 3d metals differing a little in their valance band configuration.
