1. Predicting the antioxidant activity of some flavonoids of Arbutus plant: A theoretical approach

Abstract

In this work, the antioxidant activity, free radical-scavenging capacity, molecular geometry and intramolecular hydrogen bonding interaction were explored for three natural flavonoid compounds of Arbutus unedo L. plant, Fisetin (3,3′,4′,7-tetrahydroxy flavone), Catechin (Flavan-3,3′,4′,5,7-pentol) and Apigenin (4′,5,7-trihydroxy flavone). Three potential mechanisms of antioxidant activity, hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), single electron transfer-proton transfer (SET-PT) and sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET), have been explored. The physicochemical parameters (BDE, IP, PA, PD, ETE, HOMO and LUMO), as well spin density distribution, were calculated in different solvents. The mechanisms involved in the radical scavenging activity, taking into account the position of the most active OH hydroxyl group, are in accordance with the experimental tests. HAT mechanism is most favorable in the gas phase and benzene solvent. B-ring of the three flavonoids is the active center for the antioxidant activity. Fisetin presents the best antioxidant activity with high free radical scavenging capacity followed by Catechin and Apigenin, respectively.

Abstract

In this study, the photodegradation of organophosphorus (OPs) pesticides in the honey medium was evaluated under sunlight irradiation. Some of the 22 samples collected at different sites contained OPs pesticides (Methyl parathion, Coumaphos and Fenitrothion) with an average of 8 ng/g. Moreover, three samples were found with pesticide residue levels exceeding the maximum residue limits (MRL ≥ 50 ng/g) imposed by the standard water (WHO). Gas chromatography (GC) combined with a tritium electron capture detector system was used for the analysis of OPs pesticides in honey. Total degradation of the Methyl parathion was obtained in less than 60 min of irradiation. Moreover, the elimination of the other OPs found in the samples was also effective with a rate of 85% for Coumaphos and Fenitrothion after 50 min of sunlight irradiation. The kinetics of the photodegradation reaction of all OPs pesticides studied followed a pseudo-first order model.

8. Hydrogen production on the new hetero-system Pr2NiO4/SnO2 under visible light irradiation

Abstract

The Pr2NiO4/SnO2 heterojunction with a mass ratio equal to unity was tested with success for the hydrogen production under visible light irradiation. Pr2NiO4, prepared by nitrate route, crystallizes in a tetragonal symmetry with K2NiF4 type structure. The physical, electrical and photo-electrochemical characterizations are correlated to show the feasibility of Pr2NiO4 for the hydrogen formation under visible light. The enhanced hydrogen production activity is due to electron injection of activated conduction band Pr2NiO4-CB (−1.53 VSCE) into SnO2-CB (−0.87 VSCE) which acts as an electron pump, resulting in better water reduction. The band gap of the semiconductor Pr2NiO4 is 1.81 eV with a direct optical transition. Pr2NiO4 acquired p type conductivity, due to oxygen insertion in the layered lattice with an activation energy of 0.09 eV. The flat band potential (Efb, 0.18 VSCE), very close to the photocurrent onset potential (0.13 VSCE) and the density of the holes (NA, 1.85 1020 cm−3) were obtained from the Mott-Schottky characteristic. H2 production rate of 24.3 μmol g−1 min−1 is obtained with a quantum yield of 1.45% within 30 min under optimal conditions (1 mg of catalyst/mL, pH ~12 and 50 °C) in presence of S2O2−3 as hole scavenger under visible light flux of 29 mW cm−2.

Abstract

In this work, a Discrete Element Method (DEM)-based numerical model has been developed in C++ program, which enables to simulate the crack propagation of plasma-sprayed Al2O3 coatings thus enabling to predict their failure. DEM-based approach is combined with the image analysis procedure applied on two-dimensional (2D) cross-section images of as-sprayed coatings. This procedure allows to build up the model of the coating microstructure taking into account defects which can be regarded as pores and cracks. Pores are then discriminated from cracks and these latter are in turn categorized into two types intra- and inter-splat cracks which have been considered in the simulations of crack propagation. Results indicate that the Young's modulus of as-sprayed coatings depends strongly on the geometric features of the porosity, namely the shape and the distribution. The simulation results on crack propagation exhibit that the generation of cracks which begin inside the splat due to the intra-splat cracks yield large cracks which propagate vertically until to reach the surface of the coating, while inter-splat cracks located at the interface between splats evolve by creating a bifurcation through an interlinking mechanism with other cracks.

Abstract

We investigated the technical feasibility of photochemical hydrogen release based on CuFe2O4 powder dispersion in an aqueous electrolyte containing a reducing agent (\({\text{S}}_{2} {{\text{O}}_{3}}^{ - 2}\)). The oxide combines an average resistance to corrosion and an optimum inter-referred band Eg of 1.67 eV. The intercalation of a small amount of oxygen should be accompanied by partial oxidation of Cu+ to Cu2+ involving a p-type semi-conductivity. The oxidation S2− inhibits the photo-corrosion, and the evolution of H2 increases in parallel with the formation of polysulfides. Most of H2 is produced when p-CuFe2O4 is connected to n-ZnO formed in situ. The release of H2 is mainly on CuFe2O4, whereas, the oxidation of S2− takes place on the surface of ZnO and the hetero-system CuFe2O4/ZnO is optimized with respect to certain physical parameters. The photoelectrochemical production of H2 is a multi-step process whose decisive step is the arrival of electrons at the interface due to their low mobility. Remarkable performance with a rate of 6.74 (μmol g−1 min−1) cm3 h−1 hydrogen evolution in 0.1 M \({\text{S}}_{2} {{\text{O}}_{3}}^{ - 2}\) (pH 13) is recorded.

Abstract

Cu-doped ZnAl2O4 spinel oxides (Zn(1-x)CuxAl2O4, 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) were synthesized by co-precipitation method at 800 °C. The X-ray diffraction analysis of the as-prepared powders confirmed a spinel structure with a space group Fd-3 m. XPS was used to investigate the state of the material surface and the elemental composition. The SEM image confirmed the presence of nano spherical particles. The optical properties were characterized by UV–Vis diffuse reflectance and all band gap values, in the range of 1.71 to 3.54 eV, indicate a semiconductor character of our compounds. The energy bandgap (Eg) values of Zn(1-x)CuxAl2O4 decreased with increasing of the copper content. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated for Cr(VI) reduction under sunlight irradiation. The highest photoreduction efficiency was obtained for Zn0.2Cu0.8Al2O4 with a removal ratio of 75% after 150 min. The increase of surface area increases the photocatalytic activity as it implies larger contact surfaces exposed to Cr(VI). High surface area and pore volume are useful in the formation of photogenerated electron and hole pairs. The kinetics of photoreduction follow the modified Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. The obtained results indicate a good photocatalytic activity, in particular for compounds with a high content of Cu.

Abstract

In this work, we are interested by the photocatalytic activity under sunlight irradiation of Fe-doped ZrO2 prepared by co-precipitation. The structural and photophysical properties of the catalysts have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), BET method and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance. The results show that Fe-doped ZrO2 exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than that of both ZrO2 and commercial TiO2 P25. The best photocatalytic activity is obtained with the 50 mol% Fe-content calcined at 600 °C/ 3 h. A total photoreduction of Cr(VI) is achieved within 90 min under solar light with the new hetero-junction Fe-ZrO2/TiO2. The kinetic of Cr(VI) photoreduction is well described by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L H) model which obeys to pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.031 min−1. On the basis of the energy band positions of the hetero-junction Fe-ZrO2/TiO2, the detailed reaction mechanism of reduction of inorganic pollutant has been discussed.

Abstract

Nanocrystalline lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4), synthesized by the sol-gel method, crystallizes in the spinel structure. The physical, electrical, and photoelectrochemical properties were studied for the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange, a toxic compound, under solar irradiation. The diffuse reflectance spectrum allowed the direct band gap (1.99 eV) to be calculated. The Fourier transform IR spectrum contained all the characteristic peaks of the spinel LiMn2O4, which exhibited n-type behavior. The thermal evolution of the electrical conductivity exhibited an Arrhenius-type behavior with an activation energy of 0.27 eV. The Mott-Schottky curve allowed the determination of the flat band potential (−0.24 V vs. the saturated calomel electrode) as well as the carrier density (1.78 × 1021 cm−3). The detoxification of water containing methyl orange with LiMn2O4 as a photocatalyst was successfully completed. Total degradation for an initial concentration of 10−4 M methyl orange at pH ∼3 and 25 °C was obtained in less than 5 h under solar irradiation. No adsorption was obtained in the dark in the presence of LiMn2O4.

16. Reduction of chromium (VI) on the hetero-system CuBi 2 O 4 /TiO 2 under solar light

Abstract

The CuBi 2 O 4 /TiO 2 heterojunction was tested with success for the photo-catalytic reduction of chromate ions under sunlight. CuBi 2 O 4 , prepared by nitrate process, was characterised photo-electrochemically. The oxide is stable against photo corrosion by consumption of holes in presence of oxalic acid. The light absorption promotes electrons in the conduction band of the sensitizer (CuBi 2 O 4 ) with a very negative potential (−1.74 V SCE ) to participate in the exchange of the electron with HCrO 4 − . The enhanced activity is due to electron injection of activated CuBi 2 O 4 into TiO 2 -CB (−0.97 V SCE ). The band gap of the semiconductor CuBi 2 O 4 is 1.50 eV with a direct optical transition. This compound is a p -type semiconductor with a flat band potential of −0.39 V SCE and activation energy of 0.18 eV. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was undertaken to study the semiconductor/electrolyte interfacial phenomena. The photoactivity on the heterojunction is strongly enhanced. A remarkable performance is obtained in less than 4 h for a concentration of 30 mg in (Cr (VI)) at pH ∼ 4 and a dose of 1 mg/mL; a 98% reduction has been obtained. The kinetic of chromate photoreduction is well described by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. The chromate elimination obeys to a pseudo-first order kinetic with an apparent rate constant of 0.014 min −1 .

Abstract

La2NiO4 elaborated by nitrate route gives a positive result when used as a catalyst for the hydrogen photo-evolution. The prepared oxide crystallizes in the tetragonal K2NiF4 structure I4/mmm. The BET method was used to determine the specific surface area (4.91 m2/g); such value could suggest an interesting catalytic activity. Optical, electrical and photo-electrochemical properties have been studied to elaborate the energy diagram, a preamble for the photocatalysis. The band gap (Eg) has been evaluated at 1.51 eV and the transition is directly allowed. La2NiO4 is p-type semiconductor assigned to O2− intercalation in the two-dimensional crystal lattice; activation energy of 0.13 eV in the heating direction from the Arrhenius type law. The flat band potential Efb (−0.45 VSCE) and the density of the holes NA (1.13 × 1021 cm-3) were computed from the capacitance measurement. The conduction band illustrated in the energetic diagram for La2NiO4 (−1.77 VSCE) offers the possibility of H2 generation upon visible light. The best performance occurs at pH 13 in the presence of S2O3-3 as a hole scavenger. The H2 generation of the hetero-system (La2NiO4/SnO2) is significantly improved compared to La2NiO4. The higher photoactivity is ascribed to the electrons injection from the conduction band (La2NiO4-CB = −1.77 V/SCE), acting as generator and electrons pump, to (SnO2-CB = 0.35 V/SCE) inducing a better water reduction. The H2 evolution rate reaches 15.1 μmol g−1 min−1.

18. Green corrosion inhibition of mild steel in HCl medium using leaves extract of Arbutus unedo L. plant: An experimental and computational approach

Abstract

In this study, leaves extract of Arbutus unedo L. plant was used as a green corrosion inhibitor of mild steel in hydrochloric acid. The aqueous extract is rich in polyphenol and in particular flavonoid compounds as determined by the quantitative aluminum chloride colorimetric method. The n-butanol extract shows the highest concentration of total phenol and total flavonoid contents with 219.46 GAE mg/g extract and 174.66 mg QE/g of dry extract, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization were used as experimental measurements to confirm the anti-corrosion performances of the extract of plant leaves at different temperatures. The addition of extract plant even at low concentration increases significantly the inhibition efficiency with a maximum of 91.72% at 298 K for 0.5 g/L of leaves extract. Surface analysis was performed to attest the presence of the protected film on the surface of mild steel in HCl solution. The calculated ΔG0ads value (−24.441 kJ/mol) confirmed a spontaneous mixed chemical and physical adsorption of leaves extract compounds on the metal surface. The pKa analysis attested that the two leaves extract compounds, quercetin and catechin, exist in the neutral form in an acidic environment. Moreover, density functional theory and molecular dynamic simulation were also conducted to support the high inhibition efficiency results obtained by the experimental tests and to propose the adsorption mechanism.

Abstract

This work reports on the properties of polyaniline (PANI) films electrochemically synthesised onto indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrate from a mixed solution of 0.1 M aniline with three different types of supporting electrolytes: HNO3, H2SO4 and H3PO4. In order to investigate the effect of dopant on the behaviour of polyaniline different techniques have been employed. These characterisations were made using photoelectrochemical, FTIR and Raman spectroscopies, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, UV–vis spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry and photoluminescence techniques. The potocurent transients show a change of PANI films conductivity from p-type to n-type by changing the supporting electrolytes. The FTIR technique and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of PANI thin film on ITO substrates. Abstract

The JEM-EUSO (Joint Experiment Missions for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory) program aims at developing Ultra-Violet (UV) fluorescence telescopes for efficient detections of Extensive Air Showers (EASs) induced by Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) from satellite orbit. In order to demonstrate key technologies for JEM-EUSO, we constructed the EUSO-Balloon instrument that consists of a ∼1 m 2 refractive telescope with two Fresnel lenses and an array of multi-anode photo-multiplier tubes at the focus. Distinguishing it from the former balloon-borne experiments, EUSO-Balloon has the capabilities of single photon counting with a gate time of 2.3 µs and of imaging with a total of 2304 pixels. As a pathfinder mission, the instrument was launched for an 8 h stratospheric flight on a moonless night in August 2014 over Timmins, Canada. In this work, we analyze the count rates over ∼2.5 h intervals. The measurements are of diffuse light, e.g. of airglow emission, back-scattered from the Earth's atmosphere as well as artificial light sources. Count rates from such diffuse light are a background for EAS detections in future missions and relevant factor for the analysis of EAS events. We also obtain the geographical distribution of the count rates over a ∼780 km 2 area along the balloon trajectory. In developed areas, light sources such as the airport, mines, and factories are clearly identified. This demonstrates the correct location of signals that will be required for the EAS analysis in future missions. Although a precise determination of count rates is relevant for the existing instruments, the absolute intensity of diffuse light is deduced for the limited conditions by assuming spectra models and considering simulations of the instrument response. Abstract

In this work, the antioxidant activity, free radical-scavenging capacity, molecular geometry and intramolecular hydrogen bonding interaction were explored for three natural flavonoid compounds of Arbutus unedo L. plant, Fisetin (3,3′,4′,7-tetrahydroxy flavone), Catechin (Flavan-3,3′,4′,5,7-pentol) and Apigenin (4′,5,7-trihydroxy flavone). Three potential mechanisms of antioxidant activity, hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), single electron transfer-proton transfer (SET-PT) and sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET), have been explored. The physicochemical parameters (BDE, IP, PA, PD, ETE, HOMO and LUMO), as well spin density distribution, were calculated in different solvents. The mechanisms involved in the radical scavenging activity, taking into account the position of the most active OH hydroxyl group, are in accordance with the experimental tests. HAT mechanism is most favorable in the gas phase and benzene solvent. B-ring of the three flavonoids is the active center for the antioxidant activity. Fisetin presents the best antioxidant activity with high free radical scavenging capacity followed by Catechin and Apigenin, respectively.

Abstract

The chemical variability and antioxidant activity of the flower and leaf essential oils (EOs) of Ammoides pusilla, collected at Algeria was evaluated. The EOs were isolated by hydrodistillation and analyzed by Gas Chromatography (GC) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Antioxidant activity was assessed by DPPH, ABTS, Reducing Power and TBARS assays. Oxygen-containing monoterpenes (54-77%) dominated all but one A. pusilla leaf EOs, and in two flower EOs (53% both). Thymol dominated in practically all leaf and flowers EOs, but cumin alcohol, p-cymene and limonene attained also relatively high percentages in some EOs. A strong negative correlation (p50 values of ABTS, DPPH, and hydroxyl scavenging activity and the percentages of p-cymene and cumin alcohol present in EOs were observed, showing that higher levels of these monoterpenes were responsible for the best activities found. In spite of this finding, the antagonism and/or synergism between EO components must be taken into account, since the EO activity can only be considered as a whole. Moreover, given the EOs chemical variability their use as antioxidants, should be preceded by their chemical evaluation.

Abstract

We report the study of the physicochemical properties of the spinel CuCr2O4 and its photoactive effect with the hetero-system CuCr2O4/SnO2. The spinel CuCr2O4 presents a direct gap (Eg) of 1.39 eV, a stable behavior against photo-corrosion and a cathodic photocurrent which characteristic of type p conduction in conformity with the chrono-amperometric profile. The flat band potential (Vfb = −0.27 VSCE) was determined from the capacitance measurement. At natural pH, the degradation of CV (15 mg/L) is quasi total with CuCr2O4/SnO2 under sunlight after 90 min. CV degradation obeys pseudo-first-order kinetics with an apparent constant 0.012 min−1.

Abstract

NiBi2O4 was synthesized by sol gel method using citric acid as a complexing reagent. The formed gel was dried and calcined for 9 h at three temperature steps (400, 600, 800 °C) to get a single phase with the spinel structure. The as-prepared NiBi2O4 was characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, and UV–vis diffuse reflectance. The optical band gap (Eg =1.76 eV) was obtained from optical absorption spectroscopy. The thermal variation electrical conductivity, measured in the range (300–473 K), is characteristic of semiconductor, with a conduction mechanism by low polaron hopping and activation energy of 0.2 eV. As application, the methylene blue (MB) was successfully oxidized upon solar light. A removal conversion of 40 % was obtained after 2 h at room temperature. The total photo-oxidation of MB (30 mg/L) was obtained on the new hetero-junction NiBi2O4/ZnO at natural pH in less than 2 h. A photocatalytic degradation mechanism occurred through (electron-hole) pairs generation and the redox reactions taking place on the NiBi2O4/ZnO surface of MB are proposed to explain the high activity under solar light irradiation. The degradation kinetics followed a first order with an apparent constant rate of 0.15 h-1.

Abstract

Complete photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) was obtained in 60 min on the II-type hetero-system La2NiO4/ZnO, prepared by an impregnation method. The band gap of La2NiO4 and ZnO are 1.87 and 3.10 eV, respectively, with a direct optical transition. The position of the conduction and the valence band in the energy diagram confirms the formation of the II-type hetero-junction, thus facilitating the photo-degradation of MO. The kinetics of MO degradation obeys to the first order apparent reaction with a rate constant of 0.022 min−1. The reutilization of the hetero-system was studied with high removal efficiency after three photocatalysis runs.

Abstract

Gadolinium cuprate Gd2CuO4 was synthesized by nitrate route and its physical and electrochemical properties were investigated for the first time. The cuprate was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectrum confirms the characteristic peaks of Gd2CuO4 while the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurement gave a specific surface area of 20.45 m2 g−1. An optical gap of 1.41 eV was obtained from the diffuse reflectance (DR) and the transition is directly allowed. The electrical conductivity indicated semiconducting behavior with activation energy of 0.1 eV that correlates with the formal valence of copper. Indeed, the insertion of oxygen into the layered crystal lattice induces p-conductivity with mixed valences Cu3+/2+ and mechanism conduction by small polaron hopping. The carrier density (1.17 1019 cm−3) and flat potential (Efb = −0.33 VSCE) were determined from the (capacitance−2 – potential) characteristic. The conduction band (−1.64 VSCE), positioned at 3.11 eV below vacuum, is made up of Gd3+: (5d, 6s) hybridized orbital while the valence band (−0.23 VSCE/4.52 eV) derives mostly from Cu2+: 3d orbital.

Abstract

In this work, the photocatalytic reduction of chromate ions was studied on a new hetero-system LiMn2O4/SnO2 under solar irradiation in the presence of salicylic acid as a hole scavenger. The nanocrystalline manganate (LiMn2O4) was synthesized by sol gel method and crystallizes in the spinel structure. The X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance were used to characterize the as-prepared powder. The diffuse reflectance spectrum permits to determine a direct optical band gap (Eg) of 2.04 eV. The spinel LiMn2O4 exhibits n-type behavior, evidenced by the capacitance measurement. The detoxification of water containing Cr(VI) with the hetero-system LiMn2O4/SnO2 as photocatalyst was successful and completed under optimal conditions (initial concentration: 30 mg/L, pH ∼ 4, catalyst dose: 1 mg/mL, T ∼ 25 °C). The photocatalytic mechanism of the redox reaction taking place on the LiMn2O4/SnO2 surface was suggested.

It was launched on the moonless night of the 25th of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Abstract

The present work focuses on the effect of Cu substitution on the crystal structure and photocatalytic activity of nano-spinel oxides Ni(1−x)CuxAl2O4 (x = 0.0-1.0). The synthesized compounds by co-precipitation route are characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and UV-vis diffuse reflectance. The photocatalytic activity is followed by UV-vis spectroscopy and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy in order to confirm the good performance of the catalyst and the charge separation of photogenerated (e−/h+) pairs. The photocatalytic efficiency of the synthesized catalysts is investigated through the decomposition of Congo Red dye under solar light irradiation. The efficient catalyst is Ni0.2Cu0.8Al2O4 with a removal conversion of 90.55% of the dye after 180 min. The parameters influencing the dye degradation like initial concentration are studied for the optimum degradation and the results have been discussed. This study shows that the adsorption kinetic of the Congo red has well followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The high photocatalytic activity of Ni0.2Cu0.8Al2O4 can be attributed to the valence band of the catalyst which enhances the mobility of the photoexcited charge carriers. Abstract

EUSO-TA is a ground-based telescope, installed at the Telescope Array (TA) site in Black Rock Mesa, Utah, USA. This is the first detector to successfully use a Fresnel lens based optical system and multi-anode photomultipliers (64 channels per tube, 2304 channels encompassing a 10.6° × 10.6° field of view) for detection of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR). The telescope is located in front of one of the fluorescence detectors of the TA experiment. Since its installation in 2013, the detector has observed several ultra-high energy cosmic ray events and, in addition, meteors. The limiting magnitude of 5.5 on summed frames (∼ 3 ms) has been established. Measurements of the UV night sky emission in different conditions and moon phases and positions have been completed. Abstract

The removal of hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions is successfully achieved over the new hetero-system La 2 NiO 4 /TiO 2 at pH~4 under solar light. La 2 NiO 4 was found to be a direct band gap semiconductor with an optical transition of 1.30 eV. The photo-electrochemical characterization of the sensitizer La 2 NiO 4 is undertaken to predict the electrons injection in TiO 2 which acts as electrons Bridge to adsorbed HCrO 4 −. This compound presents a p-type semiconductor with a flat band potential of 0.18 V SCE - more cathodic than that of TiO 2 . The photoactivity is strongly enhanced in the presence of oxalic acid as hole scavenger. The saturation is due to Cr3+ oxidation by photoholes and the competitive water reduction. The reutilization shows a negligible deactivation effect and the hetero-system could be promising for increasing the quality of water.

Abstract

The semiconducting properties of La2CuO4 prepared by a chemical route are investigated for the first time by the photo-electrochemical technique. The optical gap is found to be 1.27 eV and the transition is directly allowed. p-Type conductivity is demonstrated from the Mott–Schottky plot in alkaline KOH solution (0.1 M), extrapolation of the linear region to the potential axis gives a flat band potential of −0.41 VSCE, a holes density of 1.75 × 1019 cm−3 and a space-charge region of 18 nm. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, measured over the frequency range (1 mHz–105 Hz), reveals the predominance of the bulk contribution with a constant phase element. The energy diagram shows the feasibility of La2CuO4 for the H2 evolution under visible light. The best performance occurs at pH 12.5 in the presence of S $_{\mathbf {2}}\textit {O}_{\mathbf {3}}^{\mathbf {2-}}$ as holes scavenger. A liberation rate of 20.6 μmol mn−1 (g catalyst)−1 is obtained under full light (29 mW cm−2).

Abstract

The chromate reduction is successfully achieved over the new heterosystem La2CuO4/SnO2 under solar light. La2CuO4 is a narrow band gap semiconductor with a direct optical transition of 1.27 eV. Its photoelectrochemical characterization is undertaken to predict the electrons injection in SnO2, the latter acts as electrons bridge to adsorbed HCrO4−. The Mott-Schottky plot of La2CuO4 is characteristic of p-type conductivity with a flat band potential of −0.46 VSCE. Hence, the conduction band (−1.62 VSCE) is cathodic enough to reduce HCrO4− into Cr3+. The chrono-potentiometry shows that the adsorption is reached after ∼ 40 min. and averages 15% for an initial concentration of 30 mg/L at pH = 4. The photoactivity is strongly enhanced in presence of oxalic acid as holes scavenger, which hinders the recombination of electron/hole pairs. A complete reduction (30 mg/L) occurs in less than 2 h under solar irradiation. The kinetic of the chromate reduction is well described by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model with an apparent rate constant of 0.23 mn−1. The saturation beyond 75 min is due to the competitive water reduction which inhibits considerably the chromate reduction. Abstract

Experimental study of twin wire arc sprayed Zn/Al coating on low carbon steel substrate has been undertaken in the present paper. The spray distances have a pronounced effect on the coating microstructure and it’s resistance against corrosion. Structural and surface morphological analyses of the Zn/Al coatings were performed using XRD, SEM, microhardness, metallographic microscope and gravimetric measurement analysis. The XRD analysis shows an effect only on the critallinity of the phases. The results obtained from SEM analysis show that the coating prepared at 100 mm present higher hardness, low porosity fraction compared to other prepared coatings. Metallographic microscopy and gravimetric measurement result reveals that the coating prepared at 100 mm present a best corrosion resistance when exposed to seawater solution. These studies have been made for a spray distance ranging from 100 to 140 mm.

Abstract

Summary The physiopathology of idiopathic achalasia is still unknown. The description of circulating antimyenteric autoantibodies (CAA), directed against enteric neurons in sera of patients, suggests an autoimmune process. Recent data showed controversies according to the existence and the significance of CAA. The aims of this study were to investigate whether CAA are detected in Tunisian patients with idiopathic achalasia and to look for associated clinical or manometrical factors with CAA positivity. Twenty-seven patients with idiopathic achalasia and 57 healthy controls were prospectively studied. CAA were assessed by indirect immunofluorescence on intestinal monkey tissue sections. Western blot on primate cerebellum protein extract and dot technique with highly purified recombinant neuronal antigens (Hu, Ri, and Yo) were further used to analyze target antigens of CAA. CAA were significantly increased in achalasia patients compared with controls when considering nuclear or cytoplasmic fluorescence patterns. (33% vs. 12%, P = 0.03 and 48% vs. 23%, P = 0.001 respectively). By immunoblot analysis, CAA did not target neuronal antigens, however 52/53 and 49 kDa bands were consistently detected. CAA positivity was not correlated to specific clinical features. The results are along with previous studies demonstrating high CAA prevalence in achalasia patients. When reviewing technical protocols and interpretation criteria, several discrepancies which could explain controversies between studies were noted.

Abstract

Self photodriven chromate reduction and oxalic acid oxidation are concomitantly achieved over the new hetero-system CuCr 2 O 4 /ZnO. The absorption of light promotes electrons in the sensitizer conduction band (CuCr 2 O 4 -CB) with a potential (−0.95 V SCE ), too negative to be involved in an electron exchange with HCrO 4 − species. The improved activity is due to the electron injection from activated CuCr 2 O 4 into ZnO-CB (−0.58 V SCE ). The nitrate route is suitable to prepare active ZnO on which the chromate reduction occurs. A reduction of more than 60% of HCrO 4 − is achieved in air equilibrated solution under optimal conditions (pH∼3.5, 1 mg catalyst mL −1 , 25 °C). The experimental data are fitted adequately with the modified Langmuir–Hinshelwood model. The reduction follows a pseudo first order kinetic with a half life of 53 min for a concentration of 10 −4 M. The oxidation of Cr 3+ by photo holes and the competitive water reduction are though to be the main reasons of the regression in the photoactivity. The hetero-system favours hydrogen formation, with a rate evolution of 15 μmol h −1 mg −1 .

Abstract

Background Pemphigus is a life-threatening autoimmune blistering disease mediated by autoantibodies against adhesion molecule of the skin. Its concurrence with systemic and organ-specific autoimmune disease was described in case reports. Objectives To evaluate the presence of a broad spectrum of organ-specific and non-organ-specific autoantibodies other than anti-desmoglein antibodies in pemphigus patients. Patients and methods Serum samples were obtained from 105 pemphigus foliaceus (PF) patients, 51 pemphigus vulgaris (PV) patients and 50 controls. Both indirect immunofluorescence assay and ELISA were used to assess the presence of autoantibodies related to connective tissue diseases, autoimmune hepatitis, vasculitis, rheumatoid arthritis, coeliac disease, diabetes and thyroiditis. Results Significant difference was observed between the three groups for anti-thyroglobulin antibodies in the pemphigus foliaceus group (18% vs. 4%, P = 0.03). A significantly higher occurrence of IgM anti-cardiolipin (P = 0.03), IgG anti-reticulin (P = 0.01) and IgG anti-gliadin antibodies (P = 0.008) were observed in the PV group. Cases with more than four autoantibodies were frequently positives for both anti-desmoglein 1 and anti-desmoglein 3. Conclusion Autoantibodies other than anti-desmoglein antibodies are not rare in pemphigus patients. Clinical and serological follow-up of pemphigus patients with positive autoantibodies are needed to clarify their impact in disease evolution.

40. Tuberculose pulmonaire étendue : profil clinique, radiologique, bactériologique et évolutif

Abstract

Introduction Malgre les progres dans les moyens diagnostiques et therapeutiques. La tuberculose pulmonaire demeure un defi majeur en matiere de sante publique et c’est devant la frequence croissante des formes etendues que nous avons decide de mener une etude dans ce sens et dont les objectifs sont : –identifier les facteurs favorisants des lesions etendues ; –etablir leur profil clinique, biologique et radiologique ; proposer des solutions de prise en charge et de prevention. Methodes Il s’agit d’une etude retrospective comparative, portant sur 89 patients hospitalises au niveau du service de pneumologie du CHU Constantine de 2013 a 2015 pour tuberculose pulmonaire. Les patients ont ete repartis en 2 groupes, le G1 (groupe 1 : tuberculoses etendues, 61 cas) vs le G2 (groupe 2 : tuberculoses non etendues, 29 cas) Le recueil realise a partir des dossiers medicaux mis a notre disposition dans les archives, s’interessait aux donnees epidemiologiques, aux caracteristiques radiocliniques, bacteriologiques, aux modalites therapeutiques et evolutives. Resultats L’âge moyen des patients etait de 44 ans dans le G1 et 40 ans dans le G2, avec une predominance masculine dans le G1 (3H/2F), non retrouvee dans le G2. Au total, 26,8 % des patients etaient fumeurs dans le G1 et 32 % dans le G2. Le signe clinique le plus frequemment retrouve etait la toux, sans difference significative entre les deux groupes. On ne retrouvait pas de difference significative dans la duree d’hospitalisation entre les deux groupes. Le delai de consultation est de 61 jours dans le G1 contre 45 dans le G2, le delai diagnostique est de 68 jours contre 56 jours dans le G2. Une anomalie de la VS, la CRP, une hyperleucocytose, une anemie et une hyponatremie etaient plus souvent observees dans le G1. Conclusion On observe une recrudescence des formes pulmonaires etendues qui peuvent mettre en jeu le pronostic vital et fonctionnel. Nous suggerons une application rigoureuse du programme de lutte contre la tuberculose, permettant une identification precoce de la tuberculose pulmonaire, ainsi qu’une prise en charge globale incluant celle des facteurs de risques.

Abstract

Plasma spraying is mainly employed for surface treatment providing coating for protection of materials against wear, erosion and corrosion. Improving coating quality requires a better understanding of the behavior of the arc created inside the direct current arc plasma torches. The present work is devoted to the determination of plasma torch parameters using an analytical calculation on the cathode spot parameters. A model of a heat transfer in the cathode spot on an electrode in the arc discharge is developed and analytical expressions for the spot radius and temperature as functions of basic characteristics of the discharge and the electrode material are obtained. The dependence of the spot radius on the time, the cathode drop voltage and current is investigated. The sequence of calculation of voltage-current characteristics of DC arc plasma torch is proposed. It is shown that the Steenbeck model of arc discharge in cylindrical channel makes it possible to carry out this calculation.

Abstract

The thin films of Cu2O are deposited by electrodeposition technique onto indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrate at different potentials. The precursor is an aqueous solution which contains respectively 0.05 M of CuSO4 and citric acid at kept temperature of 60 °C and the applied potential varies within the {−0.4 V, −0.7 V} SCE range. Based on the chronocoulometry (CC) process, the electrochemical, structural and optical parameters are determined. We measured the current as function of potential within the {−0.4 V, −0.7 V} range and the higher current is found to be within the {−0.7V, −0.3 V} band. The grain sizes are of 12.12 nm and 35.47 nm according to (110) and (221) orientations respectively. The hightextural coefficient of 0.943 is recorded for the potential −0.7 V The transmittance of 72.25 %, within the visible band, is obtained for the as-grown layer at −0.4 V and the band gap is found to be 2.2 eV for the electrodeposition potential of −0.7 V

Abstract

The physiopathology of idiopathic achalasia is still unknown. The description of circulating antimyenteric autoantibodies (CAA), directed against enteric neurons in sera of patients, suggests an autoimmune process. Recent data showed controversies according to the existence and the significance of CAA. The aims of this study were to investigate whether CAA are detected in Tunisian patients with idiopathic achalasia and to look for associated clinical or manometrical factors with CAA positivity. Twenty-seven patients with idiopathic achalasia and 57 healthy controls were prospectively studied. CAA were assessed by indirect immunofluorescence on intestinal monkey tissue sections. Western blot on primate cerebellum protein extract and dot technique with highly purified recombinant neuronal antigens (Hu, Ri, and Yo) were further used to analyze target antigens of CAA. CAA were significantly increased in achalasia patients compared with controls when considering nuclear or cytoplasmic fluorescence patterns. (33% vs. 12%, P = 0.03 and 48% vs. 23%, P = 0.001 respectively). By immunoblot analysis, CAA did not target neuronal antigens, however 52/53 and 49 kDa bands were consistently detected. CAA positivity was not correlated to specific clinical features. The results are along with previous studies demonstrating high CAA prevalence in achalasia patients. When reviewing technical protocols and interpretation criteria, several discrepancies which could explain controversies between studies were noted.

Abstract

Objectifs L'objectif de cette etude est d'evaluer la stabilite hemodynamique, l'analgesie peroperatoire, ainsi que l'effet sur le nouveau-ne des rachianesthesies pratiquees avec une faible dose de bupivacaine isobare associees a des doses variables de fentanyl chez les parturientes souffrant de preeclampsie. Methodes 30 parturientes, consentantes, ont ete colligees de facon prospective et admises au bloc de gynecologie obstetrique pour cesarienne programmee sur pre-eclampsie (PE) severe. La dose de fentanyl administree est choisie par le medecin sur place : fentanyl a 10 ¥ (fenta 10 = au nombre de 10), fentanyl a 20 ¥ (fenta 20 = nbre 10) et fentanyl a 25 ¥ (fenta25 = nbre 10). La frequence cardiaque, la pression arterielle, le bloc sensoriel sont enregistres a des intervalles reguliers (2, 4, 6, 10, 20, 30 minutes), ainsi que la presence de douleurs, de nausees, de vomissements, de prurits ou d'autres signes secondaires. L'Apgar a ete utilise pour l'evaluation neonatale (pH ombilical non pratique). Resultats L'âge moyen du 1 er groupe fenta 10 etait de 32,5 annees, avec un âge moyen de la grossesse de 38 semaine d'amenorrhee, le 2 e groupe fenta 20 : 36 ans, 36 SA, le groupe 3 fenta 25 : 33,5 ans, 37,75 SA. Un niveau d'anesthesie chirurgicale adequat a ete atteint dans les 3 groupes (niveau T4 moins rapide pour le groupe fenta 10). La chute de la pression arterielle moyenne a ete notee pour les 3 groupes a des periodes similaires, mais moins prononcee pour le groupe fenta 30. La duree d'analgesie est presque similaire aux 3 groupes, sans effets secondaires notables (prurit : fenta 30). Conclusion L'utilisation de faibles doses de bupivacaine isobare associee a une faible dose de fentanyl permet d'obtenir un niveau d'anesthesie chirurgicale acceptable une duree d'analgesie prolongee sans effets nefastes hemodynamiques ou neonataux chez les patientes pre-eclamptiques admises pour cesarienne.

Abstract

Pemphigus is a life-threatening autoimmune blistering disease mediated by autoantibodies against adhesion molecule of the skin. Its concurrence with systemic and organ-specific autoimmune disease was described in case reports.To evaluate the presence of a broad spectrum of organ-specific and non-organ-specific autoantibodies other than anti-desmoglein antibodies in pemphigus patients.Serum samples were obtained from 105 pemphigus foliaceus (PF) patients, 51 pemphigus vulgaris (PV) patients and 50 controls. Both indirect immunofluorescence assay and ELISA were used to assess the presence of autoantibodies related to connective tissue diseases, autoimmune hepatitis, vasculitis, rheumatoid arthritis, coeliac disease, diabetes and thyroiditis.Significant difference was observed between the three groups for anti-thyroglobulin antibodies in the pemphigus foliaceus group (18% vs. 4%, P=0.03). A significantly higher occurrence of IgM anti-cardiolipin (P=0.03), IgG anti-reticulin (P=0.01) and IgG anti-gliadin antibodies (P=0.008) were observed in the PV group. Cases with more than four autoantibodies were frequently positives for both anti-desmoglein 1 and anti-desmoglein 3.Autoantibodies other than anti-desmoglein antibodies are not rare in pemphigus patients. Clinical and serological follow-up of pemphigus patients with positive autoantibodies are needed to clarify their impact in disease evolution.

Abstract

We have constructed a high resolution I‐V Probes including a high voltage and current probes to measure the current and the tension at the entry of the electrode excitation in reactor plasma RF argon. The I‐V Probes is no intrusive, therefore it can be transposable in another surface treatment reactor, and it is what is required in the industrial applications. Because of capacitive aspect of the coupling and the presence of parasitic electrical elements in the chamber plasma reactor and the connection circuits, the measured signals are largely different from the signals at the RF electrode in contact with plasma. A phase angle error of 1° between i(t) and v(t) introduce a large error in the calculated parameters. The objective of this work is the calibration of the I‐V Probes and the whole system of measurement, and the characterization of the parasitic elements of the reactor. The characterization of the I‐V Probes required the realization of several reactive loads (capacitive) measured with a network analyzer HP8753ES. The signals Vi(t) and Vv(t), resulting from the I‐V Probes and collected by a DPO (TDS4054 numerical oscilloscope of very high performance), are transferred towards the computer for a digital processing. The elimination of the offsets voltage present at the entries of the DPO and the smoothing by a powerful method of least squares, make it possible to increase precision.

49. Solar photodegradation of Rhodamine B dye by Cu 2 O/TiO 2 heterostructure: experimental and computational studies of degradation and toxicity.

Abstract

Context and Results: In this study, the heterojunction Cu 2 O/TiO 2 is used for the degradation of a cationic dye, Rhodamine B, under solar light irradiation over a wide pH range. The physical and optical properties of both semiconductors Cu 2 O and TiO 2 are correlated with the photo-electrochemical characterization to establish the energy diagram of the heterojunction Cu 2 O/TiO 2 . X-ray diffraction, UV-visible, SEM, EDX, and BET analyses are conducted for both photocatalysts. The band gap (E g ) of 3.26 eV is obtained for TiO 2 with an indirect optical transition. In the case of Cu 2 O, the transition is directly allowed at 2.05 eV. According to the BET analysis, the specific surface area of TiO 2 particles is higher (82.65 m 2  g -1 ) than that of Cu 2 O (29.81 m 2  g -1 ). The flat band potentials, determined from the Mott-Schottky plots, are 0.3 and - 0.32 V SCE for TiO 2 and Cu 2 O, respectively. The photocatalytic activity is directly proportional to the mass ratio, and the best result is obtained for the mass ratio 1:1 of Cu 2 O/TiO 2 ., Computational and Theoretical Techniques: Furthermore, a theoretical study is conducted by using density functional theory to optimize the structure, reactivity sites of the RhB molecule, and physical parameters like the energy of the frontier molecular orbitals and electronegativity and to predict the proposed mechanism of RhB degradation as well as its intermediates. Also, molecular dynamics simulation is used to determine the adsorption behavior of RhB on TiO 2 (101) and Cu 2 O (111) surfaces. The ecotoxicity evaluation showed that degradation products have significantly lower acute toxicity than RhB., (© 2023. Abstract

In this study, the photodegradation of organophosphorus (OPs) pesticides in the honey medium was evaluated under sunlight irradiation. Some of the 22 samples collected at different sites contained OPs pesticides (Methyl parathion, Coumaphos and Fenitrothion) with an average of 8 ng/g. Moreover, three samples were found with pesticide residue levels exceeding the maximum residue limits (MRL ≥ 50 ng/g) imposed by the standard water (WHO). Gas chromatography (GC) combined with a tritium electron capture detector system was used for the analysis of OPs pesticides in honey. Total degradation of the Methyl parathion was obtained in less than 60 min of irradiation. Moreover, the elimination of the other OPs found in the samples was also effective with a rate of 85% for Coumaphos and Fenitrothion after 50 min of sunlight irradiation. The kinetics of the photodegradation reaction of all OPs pesticides studied followed a pseudo-first order model.
