Organic interposer (CoWoS®-R) is one of the most promising heterogeneous integration platform solutions for high-speed and artificial intelligence applications. Components such as chiplets, high-bandwidth memory, and passives can be integrated into an organic interposer with excellent yield and reliability. This paper presents reliability results for advanced organic interposer packages. Multiple redistribution layers (RDLs) form an effective stress buffer for reducing the stress induced in the C4 joint and its underfill from the mismatch between the top dies and substrate. Four RDL lines with a minimum line width/spacing of 2/2 µm exhibited excellent robustness, ensuring the long functional lives of highperformance computing products. We successfully demonstrated the outstanding fatigue performance of the C4 joint reliability. Various large packages passed stringent reliability tests, specifically TCC (−65°C to 150°C) up to 1300 cycles for heterogeneous integration package and TCG (−40°C to 125°C) up to 2500 cycles for chiplet integration package. The results of the sanity cross-sectional check indicate no interfacial delamination or crack. In addition, an in-depth analysis conducted using finite-element modeling revealed that the packages had superior reliability performance compared with a large monolithic flip-chip package.

MiR-430 is considered an important regulator during embryonic development, but genetic loss-of-function study is still lacking. Here we demonstrated that genetic deletion of the miR-430 cluster resulted in developmental defects in cell movement, germ layer specification, axis patterning and organ progenitor formation in zebrafish. Transcriptome analysis indicated that the maternally provided transcripts were not properly degraded whereas the zygotic genome expressed genes were not fully activated in the miR-430 mutants. We further found that a reciprocal regulatory loop exists between miR-430 and maternally provided transcripts: the maternally provided transcripts (Nanog, Dicer1, Dgcr8, and AGOs) are required for miR-430 biogenesis and function, whereas miR-430 is required for the clearance of these maternally provided transcripts. These data provide the first genetic evidence that miR-430 is required for maternal-zygotic transition and subsequent establishment of embryonic body plan.

Although service innovations have been recognized to be important for the long-term strategic success of hospitality firms, to date, the elicitation of innovative behavior has received little attention in the extant hospitality research literature. In the current study, we used a matched set of responses from 294 frontline, customer-contact, hotel employees and their direct supervisors to address this lack. Consistent with extant human resource management (HRM) studies that have advocated the agent-centered perspective, this study’s results illuminate a causal chain through which employee self-reported (Time 1, Source 1) perceived high-investment human resource practices (HIHRP) augments individual frontline, customer-contact, hotel employee supervisor-rated (Time 2, Source 2) innovative behavior. This study contributes to the extant hospitality and HRM research literatures by elucidating individual hotel employee self-reported perceived HIHRP as a key proximal determinant and individual hotel employee supervisor-rated innovative behavior as a key proximal consequence of two positive organizationally relevant individual-level psychological outcomes: that is, frontline, customer-contact, hotel employee self-reported readiness for change and absorptive capacity. Findings, implications, and limitations as well as avenues for future research are discussed.

Thraustochytriidae sp. have broadly gained attention as a prospective resource for the production of omega-3 fatty acids production in significant quantities. In this study, the whole genome of Thraustochytriidae sp. SZU445, which produces high levels of docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), was sequenced and subjected to protein annotation. The obtained clean reads (63.55 Mb in total) were assembled into 54 contigs and 25 scaffolds, with maximum and minimum lengths of 400 and 0.0054 Mb, respectively. A total of 3513 genes (24.84%) were identified, which could be classified into six pathways and 44 pathway groups, of which 68 genes (1.93%) were involved in lipid metabolism. In the Gene Ontology database, 22,436 genes were annotated as cellular component (8579 genes, 38.24%), molecular function (5236 genes, 23.34%), and biological process (8621 genes, 38.42%). Four enzymes corresponding to the classic fatty acid synthase (FAS) pathway and three enzymes corresponding to the classic polyketide synthase (PKS) pathway were identified in Thraustochytriidae sp. SZU445. Although PKS pathway-associated dehydratase and isomerase enzymes were not detected in Thraustochytriidae sp. SZU445, a putative DHA- and DPA-specific fatty acid pathway was identified.

SUMMARY In animal embryos, the maternal-to-zygotic transition (MZT) hands developmental control from maternal to zygotic gene products. We show that the maternal proteome represents more than half of the protein-coding capacity of Drosophila melanogaster’s genome, and that 2% of this proteome is rapidly degraded during the MZT. Cleared proteins include the post-transcriptional repressors Cup, Trailer hitch (TRAL), Maternal expression at 31B (ME31B), and Smaug (SMG). Although the ubiquitin-proteasome system is necessary for clearance of these repressors, distinct E3 ligase complexes target them: the C-terminal to Lis1 Homology (CTLH) complex targets Cup, TRAL, and ME31B for degradation early in the MZT and the Skp/Cullin/F-box-containing (SCF) complex targets SMG at the end of the MZT. Deleting the C-terminal 233 amino acids of SMG abrogates F-box protein interaction and confers immunity to degradation. Persistent SMG downregulates zygotic re-expression of mRNAs whose maternal contribution is degraded by SMG. Thus, clearance of SMG permits an orderly MZT., Graphical Abstract, In Brief Cao et al. show that 2% of the proteome is degraded in early Drosophila embryos, including a repressive ribonucleoprotein complex. Two E3 ubiquitin ligases separately act on distinct components of this complex to phase their clearance. Failure to degrade a key component, the Smaug RNA-binding protein, disrupts an orderly maternal-to-zygotic transition.

This study investigates how peer influence, school attachment, and substance abuse are related to sexual behavior, with particular interest in exploring the relationship between substance abuse and sexual misconduct, while using a stratified random sample of adolescents in Macau. Mediation analyses were employed. The results show that substance abuse, apart from susceptibility to peer influence and school attachment/commitment, was significantly related to sexual misconduct. Substance abuse was the best predictor of sexual misconduct, and it significantly mediated the relationship between susceptibility to peer influence, as well as school attachment and sexual misconduct. This reflects that the use of substances, including drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes, can be viewed as a catalyst for triggering engagement in sexual misconduct. The implications of this study involve taking measures to reduce the rate of substance abuse as a way of decreasing sexual misconduct in adolescents. Future research directions in exploring the relationship between adolescent substance abuse and risky sexual behavior are discussed.

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Chinese Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory among Hong Kong chronic disease patients. Using a cross-sectional design and multistage stratification sampling, 265 chronic disease patients were recruited from a selection of non-governmental organizations and patient self-help groups across Hong Kong. The Chinese Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory total scale and subscales showed satisfactory internal consistency, reliability and concurrent validity. The factor structure of the Chinese Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory fit well with a higher-order intrapersonal factor (self, spiritual and life orientation) and a first-order interpersonal factor. The Chinese Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory was predictive of hope and positive coping but negatively predictive of anxiety. The five Chinese Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory subscales can help practitioners identify meaningful health outcomes for Chinese chronic disease patients.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of global self-esteem, moral self, and parental bonding on youth’s delinquency. A sample of young Chinese adults (N=200) were drawn from public areas such as playgrounds and campus. Respondents were to complete a questionnaire consisted of the General Self, Moral Self, Parental Bonding, and Behavior Checklist on an individual basis. As a result, males reported higher delinquency as well as general self-esteem than females. Among the demographic variables, gender was found to significantly predict delinquency. For the self variables, moral self but not global self-esteem was found to predict delinquency significantly, even when the effect of gender was being controlled. Among the parenting aspects (authoritarianism, protectiveness, care), protectionism significantly predicted delinquency, while parental care and authoritarianism did not. These findings confirmed the need of considering multidimensional aspects of self-esteem and the cultural perspective in explaining the parental impacts on delinquency.

This study attempted to investigate the predictive effects of self-concept, social networking site (SNS) intensity on delinquency. A total of 216 secondary school students from Hong Kong completed the Chinese Adolescent Self-Esteem Scales (CASES), the Facebook Intensity Scale and a daily behaviour checklist. Findings revealed that usage of Social Network Sites (SNS) and some facets of self-esteem had direct and moderating effects on predicting delinquency and minor deviant behaviour, but global self-esteem did not have significant predictive effects on delinquency. Different effects were found between domain-specific self-concepts and delinquency, such that intellectual, moral and family self-concepts had linear negative relationship with delinquent behavior, whereas engaging in delinquent behaviour were associated with higher appearance self. Use of SNS contributed to higher rates of both delinquent behaviour and minor deviant behaviour. In particular, time spent in SNS was a very strong predictor of delinquent behaviour, and moderated the effect of appearance self-concept. Discussion of findings were enlightened by the notion of “threatened ego” and the “self-derogation theory”.

While external factors such as family and peers were widely known to be predictive of juvenile delinquency, mixed results were reported regarding the effects of internal (personal) variables such as self-concept and moral reasoning maturity. The present study was to delineate the effects of two variables relating to the self (self-esteem, moral self) and the moral reasoning maturity in predicting delinquency. A sample of 266 young people aged between 17 and 21 were invited to complete a questionnaire composed of global self-concept (self-esteem) scale, moral self scale, moral reasoning test, and a daily behavior checklist. Regression and correlation analyses indicated that moral self and moral reasoning were in general negatively associated with delinquency, but global self-esteem did not have significant linear relation with delinquency. Polynomial contrast tests revealed that moral reasoning and moral self to certain extent had a linear trend with delinquency negatively, but global self-esteem exhibited a curvilinear (U-shape) trend with some but not all delinquent behaviors such as sexual misconduct, drug offenses, gambling. The results were then discussed in the light of self-derogation theory and other relevant theories such as the “threatened ego” and the multidimensional model of self-concept, and hopefully could throw lights to explain the phenomenon for further research.

Cyberbullying is a growing concern worldwide. Using a sample of 1917 secondary adolescents from seven schools, five psychometric measures (self-efficacy, empathy level, feelings regarding a harmonious school, sense of belonging to the school, and psychosocial wellbeing) and five scales regarding bullying experiences (cyber- and traditional bullying perpetration and victimization; reactions to cyberbullying victimization) were administered to explore the prevalence of cyberbullying in Hong Kong. FINDINGS indicated that male adolescents were more likely than female adolescents to cyberbully others and to be cyber-victimized. Cyberbullying perpetration and victimization were found to be negatively associated with the adolescents' psychosocial health and sense of belonging to school. Cyber- and traditional bullying were positively correlated. Multivariate analyses indicated that being male, having a low sense of belonging to school, involvement in traditional bullying perpetration, and experiencing cyber-victimization were associated with an increased propensity to cyberbully others.

The aim of this study is to investigate the functional role of G protein-coupled receptor 30 (GPR30) in the epididymis. We found that GPR30 is expressed in the epithelium of the immature rat epididymis and is involved in chloride secretion into the caudal epididymis lumen. The short-circuit current (Isc) experiments showed that in primary cultured caudal epididymis epithelium, activation of GPR30 by its specific agonist G1 induced a mono-phasic current increase, and G15, the specific antagonist of GPR30, could completely inhibit the current induced by G1. The G1-induced Isc was largely blocked by application of the non-specific chloride channel inhibitor diphenylamine-dicarboxylic acid (DPC), or by the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) inhibitor CFTR

This study adopts the rational choice perspective to develop a measurement scale for the subjective perception of risks and rewards among Chinese juvenile thieves. Rational choice is a utilitarian view of human behaviour that holds that individuals will stop offending if they perceive more risks than rewards to be attached to a crime. Using qualitative data abstracted from semi-structured interviews with 30 subjects aged from 10 to 17, the study categorized and thematically coded the juvenile thieves' own definitions and subjective perceptions of the risks and rewards they attached to their criminal acts. A scale consisting of 18 items was then constructed to measure 200 juvenile thieves' perceptions of these risks and rewards, and five factors were subsequently identified. This study was designed to explore the psychological and social correlates of deviant behaviour in a sample of Hong Kong school students. Findings revealed that their deviant behaviour was significantly and positively correlated with rebelliousness and susceptibility to negative peer influence. While weak direct relationships were found between self-efficacy, self-esteem and deviant behaviour in general, we found “bullying/vandalism”, “verbally/physically attacking parents”, “lack of motivation to study”, and “verbally/physically attacking teachers” had significant effects with “self-esteem and/or self-efficacy”. The present study concludes that changing the delinquents’ deviant identity is essential; the identity-rebuilding process would strengthen their self-image and prevent them from going astray.

With bullying in schools high on policy makers’ agendas, researchers are looking for effective strategies to tackle its disruptive effects. The present study sets out to address this issue. First, the prevalence of bullying is examined in Hong Kong High Schools, and second, the effectiveness of a Restorative Whole-school Approach (RWsA) in reducing bullying is examined in a quasi-experimental design. The RWsA emphasizes the setting up of restorative goals, clear instructions, team building, and good relationships among students, parents, and teachers. Over the course of 2 years, and across four schools, the effectiveness of this program was observed by comparing an intervention group with a partial intervention group (which did not receive the full treatment) and a control group (which received no treatment whatsoever). The group that received the RWsA treatment exhibited a significant reduction of bullying, higher empathic attitudes, and higher self-esteem in comparison to the partial intervention and the control group.

Transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs) have been proven to be effective for gene specific targeting across species. Here we describe the validated protocol for TALEN assembly as well as methods for generating gene knockout animals of Xenopus and zebrafish. This protocol covers selection of TALEN targeting sites, TALEN assembly with a modified Golden Gate method, injection of TALEN mRNAs into Xenopus and zebrafish embryos as well as the detection of somatic and germ-line transmitted mutations. Finally, the establishment of knockout Xenopus and zebrafish lines is also described. This protocol will facilitate broader applications of TALENs in developmental biology.

Proteases have been shown to modulate pain signaling in the spinal cord and may contribute to the development of chronic postsurgical pain. By using peripheral inflammation in rats as a chronic pain model, the authors identified the deregulation of proteases and their inhibitors as a hallmark of chronic pain development using a genome-wide screening approach.A microarray analysis was performed and identified spinal cathepsin G (CTSG) as the most up-regulated gene in rats with persistent hyperalgesia after intraplantar injection of complete Freund's adjuvant (n = 4). Further experiments were performed to elucidate the mechanisms of CTSG-induced hyperalgesia by intrathecally applying specific CTSG inhibitor (n = 10). The authors also evaluated the association between CTSG gene polymorphisms and the risk of chronic postsurgical pain in 1,152 surgical patients.CTSG blockade reduced heat hyperalgesia, accompanied by a reduction in neutrophil infiltration and interleukin 1β levels in the dorsal horns. In the gene association study, 246 patients (21.4%) reported chronic postsurgical pain at 12-month follow-up. Patients with AA genotypes at polymorphisms rs2070697 (AA-15.3%, GA-24.1%, and GG-22.3%) or rs2236742 (AA-6.4%, GA-20.4%, and GG-22.6%) in the CTSG gene had lower risk for chronic postsurgical pain compared with wild-types. The adjusted odds ratios were 0.67 (95% CI, 0.26 to 0.99) and 0.34 (95% CI, 0.21 to 0.98), respectively.This study demonstrated that CTSG is a pronociceptive mediator in both animal model and human study. CTSG represents a new target for pain control and a potential marker to predict patients who are prone to develop chronic pain after surgery.

This paper examines the impact of switching to electronic trading on the relative pricing efficiency of Hang Sang Index futures and options contracts traded on the Hong Kong exchange. The study is motivated by the recent shift in 2000 from the pit to an electronic trading platform. Electronic trading leads to lower bid-ask spreads and less price clustering than floor trading in both the options and futures markets. Mispricing between futures and options drops significantly after the change. Quicker correction of mispricing indicates a significant improvement in dynamic inter-market arbitrage efficiency with electronic trading. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sonic-boom noise penetrating under a deep ocean is affected by its time-dependent interaction with the surface waves, which can significantly influence the perceived sound pressure level and tonal content of the disturbances at depth far greater than expected from the flat-ocean (Sawyers) model. The present theory assumes a small surface slope and a high water-to-air density ratio; the ocean surface in the analysis is modelled by a sinusoidal surface-wave train. The analysis shows that a distinct acoustic wave mode in the form of a packet of wavelets emerges in the sound field far below the surface and attenuates with increasing distance in a manner similar to the cylindrical spreading of monochromatic waves. The latter feature renders the surface waviness influence an effect of first-order importance, overwhelming the primary noise field at large depth. Detailed properties of the deep-water wave fields are examined and illustrated for the case of an incident N-wave, for which an explicit, analytic solution is obtained. The result reveals a similarity structure of the wave field with two distinct time scales and the invariance characteristics of the cylindrically spreading waves, in accord with the group-velocity concept of dispersive waves. An example is given of the interaction, illustrating the underwater waveform, sound-pressure and frequency levels.

The authors used the Twenty Statements Test in 2 studies to investigate gender and country differences in the spontaneous self-descriptions of 811 college students from Hong Kong, India, Nepal, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe and 136 secondary school students from Taiwan and Hong Kong. The authors performed statistical analysis and found no significant gender differences in the percentage of responses classified as belonging to the idiocentric self in either study. However, the authors found significant Country effects in both studies for responses classified as representing the idiocentric self and some aspects of the collective self, and the authors found significant Country x Gender effects involving all 4 categories of the idiocentric self and the collective self for the college students. These findings raise questions about the generalizability of Western findings that males are more likely to espouse an independent conception of self than females. However, as the authors predicted, females were more likely to use small group self-descriptions than their male peers.

Pertussis vaccination of infants has dramatically reduced disease, complications and deaths in infancy and early childhood. But there is still a major public health challenge — to deal with the morbidity and economic burden of illness in older children, adolescents and adults. Furthermore, it is these groups that form a major source of infection for non-immunised and partially immunised infants who are at high risk of severe complications. Adult-type acellular pertussis vaccine confers safe and effective protection against pertussis. There are several strategies to consider for immunising older individuals. Universal vaccination of all age groups would be the best available strategy for protecting individuals. It would also reduce the potential for transmitting the disease to other susceptibles, particularly infants. However, such a policy may be difficult both logistically and economically at this time. More easily achievable as a first step would be a strategy of universal adolescent booster vaccination combined with a programme targeted at adults most likely to have contact with very young babies including healthcare and childcare workers, parents and close family contacts. There is also potential for offering vaccination to adults (and their carers and close contacts) whose medical conditions or advanced age may place them at increased risk of more severe pertussis disease. Specific details of immunisation programmes must be made on a country by country basis depending on local circumstances.

A new instrument, the Chinese Adolescent Self-Esteem Scales (CASES), was developed to measure the self-concepts of the young people in Hong Kong in seven aspects: social, academic, appearance, moral, family, physical/sport, and general selfesteem. LISREL procedures were utilized to test the extent of factorial invariance for age and gender based on the responses to CASES of 551 Hong Kong adolescents. It was found that CASES possesses the necessary invariance properties for between-group measurement in terms of the number and pattern of the underlying factors, item factor loadings, and inter-factor relations, but not in terms of item uniqueness. Implications of these findings are discussed in terms of the use of CASES and of empirical support for the equivalence of self-concept factor structure for age and gender groups for both Western and non-Western adolescents. This paper describes comparative studies in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and gene deliveries toward hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) HepG2 cells with ternary composites that consist of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles (NPs) (8-10 nm) with deferoxamine coating, circular plasmid DNA (~4 kb) equipped with green fluorescent probe, and branched polyethylenimine (PEI) (25 kDa, PDI 2.5). The packaging of the ternary complexes has been characterized by agarose gel retardation assay. By tuning the PEI/NP ratios and with a fixed DNA amount, different ternary composites have been employed for NP/gene transfection towards HepG2 cells, which have been characterized by in vitro MRI and green fluorescence protein (GFP) fluorescence.

Nitrous oxide inactivates methionine synthase and may lead to DNA damage and wound infection. By using single-cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay), the authors determined the effect of nitrous oxide on DNA damage in circulating leukocytes.In this double-blind, randomized controlled trial, 91 patients undergoing major colorectal surgery were randomized to receive 70% nitrous oxide (n = 31) or nitrous oxide-free anesthesia using 30 (n = 30) or 80% (n = 30) oxygen. Venous blood was collected before and 24 h after surgery. The primary outcome was extent of DNA damage, quantified as the percentage of DNA staining intensity in the comet tail using digital fluorescence microscopy. Incidence of postoperative wound infection was also recorded.Nitrous oxide exposure was associated with a two-fold increase in the percentage of DNA intensity in tail (P = 0.0003), but not in the 30 (P = 0.181) or 80% oxygen groups (P = 0.419). There was a positive correlation between the duration of nitrous oxide exposure and extent of DNA damage, r = 0.33, P = 0.029. However, no correlation was observed in nitrous oxide-free patients. The proportions of postoperative wound infection, using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria, were 19.4% (6 of 31) in the 70% nitrous oxide group and 6.7% (2 of 30) in both the 30 and 80% oxygen groups, P = 0.21. An increase in DNA damage was associated with a higher risk of wound infection, adjusted odds ratio (95% CIs): 1.19 (1.07-1.34), P = 0.003.Nitrous oxide increased DNA damage compared with nitrous oxide-free anesthesia and was associated with postoperative wound infection.

For aerodynamic configurations with sufficiently high lift, the transonic equivalence rule must be modified for both linear and nonlinear lift contributions. The latter analyses show that for a thin wing having swept leading edges, with smooth lift and thickness distributions, the outer-flow region has a nonlinear structure determined principally by an equivalent line source and a line doublet. Apart from serving as a helpful guide to conceptual aerodynamic design, the equivalence rule and its extension can be useful in transonic wind-tunnel corrections, as well as studying sonic-boom impact at low-supersonic flight speed. We re-examine the inner and outer solutions and their matching and clarifie the accuracy levels of the theory with consideration of the higher order corrections and shock discontinuities in the outer flow.

The Causal Dimension Scale II (CDS II) is a conceptually important instrument for attribution research as it taps directly the subjects' own views of the dimensions underlying their causal ascriptions. However, this research based on the responses of 167 Hong Kong tertiary students to the CDS II indicates that the internal consistency reliability of the External Control scale is of doubtful adequacy and that the best fitting model combines the Locus and Personal Control scales. It is suggested that this latter finding may be due to cultural differences in causal attributions rather than a failing of the CDS II itself.

Introduction O as well as new hypersonic flow programs continue to challenge the aerospace engineer. These programs are often of consuming difficulty, involving the synthesis of chemical kinetics, quantum mechanics, and radiation physics with fluid dynamics. To further complicate matters, the flowfield is often rarefied; thus the Knudsen number requires independent consideration along with the Mach and Reynolds numbers. Although these parameters are related, different regions of the flow, such as the interior of a bow shock, depend differently on them as compared with other regions. Because of its complexity, recent research has focused on the modeling of more realistic, complex hypersonic flows with the intensive use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Of necessity, the large codes used in this effort must resort to various empiricisms and approximations. Our objective in this Survey is to discuss some of these empiricisms and approximations within the context of hypersonic nonequilibrium flow. The issues and advances examined are primarily chosen for their relevance to theoretical gasdynamics; however, this Review makes no claim to being comprehensive. The books by Anderson and Park provide background material for the discussion of current issues, including lessons learned from the design and operation of the Space Shuttle. Our presentation is partly based on a previous report, some of which was published elsewhere. An alternative discussion of some of the same material can be found in an article by Tirsky whose discussion is especially valuable for emphasizing hypersonic research by Russian workers, with greater emphasis given to engineering heat transfer predictions. Some of this work is not as well known in the western community as it should be. The importance of finite rate chemistry and the problem of fuel-air mixing to hypersonic airbreathing propulsion cannot be overemphasized. These topics, however, are omitted from our discussion in as much as they fall under combustion gasdynamics and ought to be examined in this context.' The treatise on hydrogen combustion presented in Ref. 8 should be of interest to scramjet propulsion researchers. A broad perspective on hypersonic airbreathing vehicle design may be found in a survey (to be three volumes) edited by Bertin et al. In the next section, nonequilibrium aerothermodynamics is discussed. Much of this section is concerned with energy exchange that involves the vibrational modes of diatomic molecules. The subsequent section reviews the modeling of rarefied hypersonic flows and their continuum extension. There is no shortage of approaches that are available, as well as open issues. These approaches encompass the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, NavierStokes (NS) equations, Burnett, or augmented Burnett equations, and the 13-moment equations. The review concludes with a few brief remarks.

Critical self-framing factors and salient self-referent attributes were examined for their usefulness in predicting global self-esteem. On twelve attributes 186 Hong Kong Chinese students rated their self-view, the importance of each attribute, and their certainty of possessing each attribute. Self-rating was related to self-esteem in a simple unitary manner. Importance of attribute contributed little to the analysis while certainty was related to self-esteem only for students with strongly positive self-views. A pattern of difference in emphasis for high and low self-esteem students on social attributes was clearly distinguishable. The results are discussed in terms of their cultural implications and strategy for maintaining self-esteem.

Insulin-like growth factors (Igfs) are implicated in a wide variety of physiological roles in teleost gonadal development and reproduction. In the present study, igf3 mRNA expression in the tilapia ovary was found to be higher than in the testis from 5 to 40 days after hatching (dah) but was lower than that in testis from 50 to 70 dah. Consistently, Igf3 protein signal was detected in the somatic cells of XX and XY gonads from 10 dah until adulthood by immunohistochemistry, using a specific Igf3 polyclonal antibody. Incubation of ovarian and testicular cells in primary culture with recombinant Igf3 significantly increased nr5a1, foxl2, dmrt1, cyp19a1a, cyp11a1, cyp11b2, hsd3b2 , and cyp17a1 expression in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Promoter analysis using luciferase assays in HEK293 cells revealed that igf3 promoter activity was directly activated by Nr5a1 (Sf1) and further enhanced by Foxl2, Nr0b1a (Dax1), and Nr0b1b (Dax2) but repressed by Dmrt1 and estrogen receptor (Esr1, Esr2a, or Esr2b) along with 17beta-estradiol treatment. In addition, igf3 promoter activity was increased slightly by forskolin treatment alone but synergistically up-regulated by transfection with nr5a1. These in vitro results correlated well with the expression profile of igf3 during early gonad differentiation. Our results indicated that igf3 is involved in fish gonad steroidogenesis because of its ability to regulate the expression of foxl2, dmrt1, and nr5a1 and steroidogenic enzymes. The expression of igf3 is in turn regulated by transcription factors Foxl2, Dmrt1, and Nr5a1, as well as by 17beta-estradiol treatment.

A theoretical description is sought for the mechanisms whereby the attached motion past a finite flat plate is gradually transformed into the quite different grossly separated motion past a bluff body, as the body's thickness increases from zero to a finite value at high Reynolds numbers. The theory is based largely on the free stream line inviscid approach allied to the viscous triple-deck requirement at separation, for laminar symmetric flow of an incompressible fluid. Some surprising and potentially significant phenomena are found to arise as the body thickness increases; and the geometries of the trailing and leading edges have a crucial effect on the occurrence and position of separation. The main properties found are: the match with the Kirchhoff theoryat one extreme; at the other extreme, the match with the triple-deck account for wedged trailing edges; in-between, a “cut-off” stage during which the wake dimensions and the drag abruptly increase; and, also in-between, a nonlinear stage in whichleading edge separation can occur, depending delicately on the precise shape of the leading edge. These properties arise from the strong viscous effect at separation. Again, whether the closure of the recirculatory flow region is blunt or not, the theory is consistent with the results of earlier work for the above extremes.Nonuniqueness/bifurcation of the separated flow solutions is also found to arise for certain profiles.
