Abstract

Rice cultivation stands as the primary agricultural activity in Asia, generating a substantial amount of agricultural waste. Unfortunately, this waste is often disposed of through burning, contributing to severe environmental, health and climate issues. This study presents the characterization of PCDD/Fs, PCBs and PAHs. The emissions were quantified using a fixed-grid-system biomass plant and measuring the macro-pollutants online and sampling the organic micro-pollutants and metals in isokinetic mode, followed by ISO and CEN standards methods. Additionally, the role of agrochemicals was monitored in terms of metal catalysis resulting in POP emissions. This study provides the comprehensive characterization of the most relevant groups of pollutants (metals, PCDD/Fs, PCBs and PAHs) resulting from agricultural waste combustion. Prominent catalytic metals quantified were Cu (22–48 µg/Nm3) and Fe (78–113 µg/Nm3). Rice straw samples from AJK exhibited higher values of organochlorine micro-pollutants compared to those from Punjab and Sindh, i.e., ∑PCDD/F (2594 > 1493 > 856 pg/Nm3) and ∑PCB (41 > 38 > 30 pg/Nm3), respectively, whereas the organic micro-pollutants ∑c-PAH, indicators of incomplete combustion (PICs), were recorded high in the samples from Sindh followed by Punjab and AJK. The average EF is 100 pg/kg, 2.2 pg/kg and 1053.6 µg/kg for ∑PCDD/F, ∑PCB and ∑c-PAH. This study supports the idea that the phenomena leading to the formation of dioxin and dioxin-like compounds are influenced not only by poor combustion but also by the presence of metal catalysts in the burned fuel. 26. Ambient air PM10-bound PCDD/Fs ANNs prediction from the presence of metals in the surrounding of a bottom ashes recovery site: reliability of the results and influence of meteorological data

Abstract

Bottom ashes from municipal or industrial incinerators are considered secondary raw materials as they can be used as partial cement replacement in concrete after some preventive physicochemical processes. The possibility of predicting the concentration of the PM10-bound organic contaminants that are usually sampled weekly (PCDD/Fs, PCBs, PAHs), considered as the output data of the forecast, from the concentration of the daily analyzed inorganic pollutants, regarded as the input data, using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as a forecasting tool has been investigated. This work aimed to underline that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be a support tool for the plant manager to reduce the fallout of its emissions on the ground. Given the correspondence between the input and output data, it is possible to control the emission of micropollutants by monitoring the concentration of PM10 and metals (input). Furthermore, obtaining PM10 and metals data from an analytical point of view is easier and cheaper than POPs. This means that anomalous data of PM10 and/or metals (a daily event) and a higher concentration of POPs could be associated. In this case, it would be possible to promptly start the weekly sampling, thus reducing the costs of air quality analysis. Moreover, since pollutants are emitted from multiple sources, stationary and mobile, the application of ANN as a predictive tool can even support the plant manager (stationary source), acting on operative parameters (i.e., feeding, abatement systems, …) to control polluting emissions. In this way, the contribution to the total concentration of organic micropollutants in ambient air in the surrounding area can be monitored and eventually minimized almost in real-time. The novelty of the present work has been to assess the possible use of metal concentrations as input variables to predict the PM10-bound organic micropollutants concentration (TCDD). ANNs model results indicated that using the meteorological parameters as additional variables to the network is unnecessary. Anyway, in the presence of even very slight correlations between input data and output variables, ANNs can significantly improve their forecasting ability.

Abstract

Forestry woodchip and spent mushroom compost have commercial potential as sustainable residues in biological and chemical processes for energy production. This study focuses on the evaluation of agri-food industry waste energy valorization, with the aim to reduce the valuable biomass utilization for energy production without decreasing the process quality, thereby pursuing economic and environmental advantages. Burning trials were conducted in a fluidized bed biomass plant provided with emission abatement systems. The biomass mixture used for combustion was composed of pine and oak woodchip and spent mushroom compost. The biomass used was first characterized through compositional and energetic analysis, and subsequently, during the burning tests, a monitoring sampling campaign was carried out to analyze the gas and particles emission. Optimal combustion conditions were observed during combustion, with good oxidation of the organic material, relatively high CO2 production, and low CO concentration in flue gas. Nevertheless, SO2 concentrations in the combustion flue gas are greater than those found in the combustion of the most commonly used biomasses. In fact, the mixture compositional characterization revealed a non-negligible concentration of sulfur, which explains the high values of SO2 detected in emission. The obtained results confirm that controlled combustion, together with suitable biomasses utilization, preliminary characterization, and emission monitoring, are essential practices for the realization of a sustainable process, both from an energy and environmental point of view. The use of solid-phase extraction and electrospray liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques can help determine trace amounts of the herbicide atrazine and its six degradation products in groundwater, drinking water and surface water.
