- Abstract
This article answers the research question: “How do participants experience interdisciplinary ABV, and how can these experiences be understood as social capital?” We have reported from qualitative interviews with twelve participants in interdisciplinary ABV groups and analyzed their statements as a formative process with concepts from the social capital theory. For the participants, interdisciplinary ABV represents a new network and norms that activate generalized collaboration in contrast to the particular form of collaboration in their everyday staff. A bridging trust is created in two forms: support from others and a broader understanding of the person and the role of others. Over time, as the group settles, a new form of binding trust is created. A clearer “we” emerges in the group. With this “we”, the group members gain an expanded understanding of themselves. Through this work, the informants admit that something also develops in their relationship with their home staff: they understand more of their colleagues and become better colleagues themselves. 25. Intelligence and Intelligibility : Cross-Cultural Studies of Human Cognitive Experience

- Abstract
Across several intellectual disciplines there exists a tension between an appreciation of the cognitive capacities that all humans share and a recognition of the great variety in their manifestations in different individuals and groups. In this book G. E. R. Lloyd examines how, while avoiding the imposition of prior Western assumptions and concepts, we can reconcile two conflicting intuitions: that all humans share the same basic cognitive capacities and yet their actual manifestations in different individuals and groups differ appreciably. Lloyd investigates the cultural viability of analytic tools we commonly use (such as the contrasts between the literal and the metaphorical, between myth and rational account, and between nature and culture themselves) and the categories that we employ to organize human experience (like mathematics, religion, law, and aesthetics). The end result is a robust defence, within limits, of the possibilities of mutual intelligibility—one which recognizes both the diversity in the manifestations of human intelligence and the need to revise our assumptions in order to achieve that understanding.

- Abstract
We remember in social contexts. We reminisce about the past together, collaborate to remember shared experiences, and, even when we are alone, we remember in the context of our communities and cultures. Taking an interdisciplinary approach throughout, this text comprehensively covers collaborative remembering across the fields of developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, social psychology, discourse processing, philosophy, neuropsychology, design, and media studies. It highlights points of overlap and contrast across the many disciplinary perspectives and, with its sections on'Approaches of Collaborative Remembering'and'Applications of Collaborative Remembering', also connects basic and applied research. Written with late-stage undergraduates and early-stage graduates in mind, the book is also a valuable tool for memory specialists and academics in the fields of psychology, cognitive science and philosophy who are interested in collaborative memory research.

32. Social preferences in the lab, in the field, and online
- Author

Kistler, Deborah and Kistler, Deborah
- Abstract
Nowadays many scholars agree that the self-interest hypothesis, which postulates that humans care only about their own utility, is not the most accurate assumption to explain decision-making. Countless empirical studies provide evidence that humans have social preferences, meaning that they care about the well-being of other, unrelated individuals. Furthermore, in contrast to the predictions of standard economic theory, concerns about fairness and reciprocity affect behavior in many situations (Fehr & Schmidt, 2003). These social preferences are the central theme of my thesis. For the functioning of modern societies, social preferences are crucial (see for example Ostrom, 1990; Bowles & Gintis, 2011). They facilitate for instance cooperation in groups of strangers, the provision of public goods or the maintenance of social order, to name just a few. Generally speaking, in many situations, the welfare of the group depends on the individual willingness to behave prosocial. In these situations, individuals have an incentive to free-ride on the others to increase their private benefit. However, if all individuals would act like this, everyone would be worse off. Let’s consider the classical example of a group work at the university. If one student free rides and the others behave prosocial and cooperate, the free rider has the highest payoff. He does something else, which increases his utility while the others work on the group project. In the end, however, he still benefits from a good grade thanks to the effort of the others. In contrast, if all group members would free ride the group work would not be done, and hence everyone would be worse off. Charitable giving or volunteering activities are other examples where prosocial behavior is necessary. Thus, for social scientists, it is important to understand the development and determinants of social preferences. This thesis contains three essays, in which I elaborate on social preferences from distinct angles. Common, beside

- Abstract
In the following it is argued that the problems of the group and the seeked supervision process are concentrated in the initial contact in the so-called scene. Whether and how the supervisor understands the scene and deals with it shapes the relationship dynamics of those involved, at least in the first few hours of the supervision process, and essentially decides on the establishment of a working alliance between the supervisees and the supervisor. The focus of the following considerations is exclusively on this aspect of initial contact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Group-based exercises have an important but still not fully acknowledged role as a learning tool in university pedagogy. This article reports key findings from a study of the experiences of sociology students and teachers at Aalborg University who participated in group-based exercises. The study reveals that teachers and students agree on the relevance of the exercises and that the main purposes of these are to discuss theoretical and methodological concepts and to connect concepts to practice. However, the incentives they stress are different; teachers are often focused on training academic thinking through collective involvement and knowledge sharing, while students are focused on their exam. The study also indicates challenges in terms of coordination between the teachers and in relation to the students' academic diversity and varied activity during the group-based exercises. The article concludes with a discussion of organizational and practical initiatives that can improve student activity, learning and their experience of 'alignment' between the exercises, the learning objectives and the exam.

The foundations of collective action and agency in large groups remain a challenging theoretical problem. Why are individuals willing to contribute to a common goal, even though their contribution may have little impact? This paper aims to answer this question by explicating the motivational mechanisms that facilitate collective action and elucidating the underlying conditions and processes using social movement mobilization as an example. The mechanisms responsible for modifying motivation and action orientations in large-scale collective action are explicated at the level of individual structures of intentionality and specified as imagination and plural self-awareness. These mechanisms create the mental prerequisites for collective action by modifying two crucial determinants of action orientations: self-efficacy and intentional control. Recurring to the case of the German environmental movement, we demonstrate that collective agency arises when a shared imaginary takes shape, and plural self-awareness gives way to common action orientations through the catalyzing effect of an external synchronizing stimulus., Historical Social Research Vol. 48, No. 3 (2023)

This chapter explores abusive language’s role when employed by a group with a lower social status whose rights are threatened by political authorities. We focus on the language of protest that emerged during the 2020 All-Poland Women’s Strike, following a court ruling that almost totally banned legal abortions in Poland. Since some slogans used by these protesters could be interpreted as expressions of abusive language, we decided to analyze their meaning in a wider socio-political context. We show that women’s use of vulgarisms and offensive language can serve as a tool of social and political change and that it may lead to empowerment. Moreover, given the cultural underpinnings of Polish society’s gender-based social norms, we show that the use of abusive language may symbolize the process of redefining the traditional gender contract in Poland.

The question of the evolutionary stability of team reasoning has been answered in multiple, even opposing ways. We provide a general, conceptual categorization of these existing answers along four dimensions: (1) the unit of selection, (2) the notion of fitness for team reasoners, (3) the stage of decision-making, and (4) the ludic ecology. Beyond affording a better assessment of the different modeling choices underlying the existing results, the categorization highlights important conceptual questions for the evolutionary foundations of team reasoning. We illustrate this by looking in more detail into what should count as fitness for team reasoners., Historical Social Research Vol. 48, No. 3 (2023)

There are cases in which we intuitively want to say that individuals have a moral duty to act jointly with others in order to prevent a serious harm, even though they are individually unable to discharge this duty. I argue that existing attempts to understand these duties as duties of the group, as irreducible joint duties, or as duties to collectivise fail. I offer an alternative account according to which individuals in the relevant cases are jointly obligated to prevent the harm in question. However, there is no such thing as a joint obligation, only a state of being jointly obligated. This state is reducible to two types of individual duties. First, each agent has a duty with a conditional content of the form Ο (ψ→Ø). Due to its conditional content, the assignment of such a duty is compatible with “ought” implies “can.” Second, each individual has as an unconditional duty to show readiness for the joint action. By expressing an intention of the form “I will if you will,” an agent satisfies the antecedent of the other agents’ conditional duties. The respective agents do not only provide each other with a means to perform a joint action, they are also linked through their mutual power to change each other’s normative situation by turning each other’s conditional duties into unconditional duties. In this way, the interlocking tokens of individual duties create a state of being jointly obligated., Historical Social Research Vol. 48, No. 3 (2023)

This paper examines conceptual issues of the emergence and effects of collective agency. Collective agency seems to challenge the methodological individualist assumption that only individuals can act, but treating group actors, such as parliamentary committees or court chambers, as mere shortcuts for complex interactions among group members raises important theoretical, empirical, and normative issues. First, the paper discusses some fundamental issues of collective agency. We argue that analyses of collective agency must provide generative mechanisms that demonstrate how it arises from the interaction of group members. Second, the paper introduces major approaches to collective agency from analytical philosophy and sociology. They locate the source of collective agency in the formation of collective intentions through the adjustment of group members’ attitudes, in the organization of group decision processes, or in the transfer of resources to the group level, which empowers a collective actor to act in its own right. Against this backdrop, this paper offers an integrative concept of collective agency characterized in terms of the degree of autonomy and the level of resources controlled by a collective actor. Third, this paper introduces the contributions to this special issue, which tackle a broad variety of issues, including the formation and consequences of collective intentions in small and unorganized groups, collective agency issues of institutionalized groups and organizations, collective agency of large and unorganized groups without defined memberships, and normative issues of collective agency., Historical Social Research Vol. 48, No. 3 (2023)

Children’s motivation for the egalitarian allocation of resources is reflected in their allocation of positive and negative resources between themselves and others. In the present study, 6- (n = 29) and 8-year-olds (n = 25) could choose between different allocations of positive and negative resources to themselves and others in a series of games. The other player was either an ingroup member or an outgroup member. Results revealed that, overall and irrespective of resource valence, 8-year-olds were more likely to choose an egalitarian allocation of resources than 6-year-olds. 8-year-olds also shared more positive resources with the outgroup member than 6-year-olds. Paedagog. Psychol.;54(3)

- Abstract

- Abstract
Context: Scaffolding is a form of process-adaptive learning support that is relevant in numerous contexts, including informal learning, workplace learning as well as school teaching. While scaffolding can be well conceptualised for individual learning situations (especially for tutoring situations), there is a difficulty in measuring process adaptivity in heterogeneous learning groups, such as school classes. Approach: In this paper, we develop a measurement method that targets the deep structure of teaching and learning in whole class settings. Processes of shared knowledge constructions are taken into account, since whole-class-scaffolding (WCS) means to shape and develop common or joint knowledge spaces rather than to scaffold a multitude of individual construction processes at the same time. To achieve a coding procedure for WCS interactions, we integrate scaffolding principles and principles of dialogic teaching and explicated a set of rules that can be correlated to the quality of WCS-episodes rated on distinct Likert scales. Results: The measurement method developed in the paper provides a solution to the problem of how to measure process-adaptive learning support that is not only related to individual learners, but is directed at a heterogeneous group of learners in which different support needs may be present simultaneously. The coding procedure systematically links scaffolding principles and principles of dialogic teaching and enables us to capture the dynamics of teaching and learning processes in larger group settings. In this respect, concepts such as joint- and common space, representing entities to which WCS refers, are operationalised. Conclusions: When methods for measuring the dynamics of teaching and learning processes are available, research on instructional support is no longer limited to global ratings of whole learning units. Furthermore, the codings allow for a more fine-grained analysis of trajectories of scaffolding interactions. Such an an

- Abstract

- Abstract
Uncovering how inequality emerges from human interaction is imperative for just societies. Here we show that the way social groups interact in face-to-face situations can enable the emergence of disparities in the visibility of social groups. These disparities translate into members of specific social groups having fewer social ties than the average (i.e., degree inequality). We characterize group degree inequality in sensor-based data sets and present a mechanism that explains these disparities as the result of group mixing and group-size imbalance. We investigate how group sizes affect this inequality, thereby uncovering the critical size and mixing conditions in which a critical minority group emerges. If a minority group is larger than this critical size, it can be a well-connected, cohesive group; if it is smaller, minority cohesion widens inequality. Finally, we expose group under-representation in degree rankings due to mixing dynamics and propose a way to reduce such biases., Für eine gerechte Gesellschaft ist es unerlässlich, herauszufinden, wie sich Ungleichheit aus menschlicher Interaktion ergibt.

47. The Ethics of Gatekeeping: How Guarding Access Influences Digital Child and Youth Research

- Abstract
Digital child and youth research is often conducted in schools involving minors. Corresponding research designs raise two related sets of problems: Ethical issues with regard to working with vulnerable groups like children and adolescents and access to these groups. The latter pertains to the concept of gatekeeping which is an ethical issue in and of itself if certain groups or areas of research are systematically excluded from empirical research and, consequently, from the resulting benefits. Thus, our study examines how perceived ethical challenges influence gatekeepers' decisions to grant or deny access to investigate a potentially problematic topic: pupils' group communication. We addressed this research question empirically via semi-structured in-depth interviews with eight educational gatekeepers in Germany inquiring their attitudes on research in schools in general and on the specific topic of pupils' group communication via instant messaging as an exemplar of digital child and youth research. Approaching the question from two perspectives (procedural ethics and ethics in practice), we identified hierarchical power structures within multiple levels of gatekeeping and revealed rationales to deny access based on ethical considerations with regard to the given scenario of pupils’ group communication.

Contact between members of different groups can help to reduce prejudice between groups, discrimination and violence. For this purpose, members of different groups have to meet on the basis of equal status pursuing cooperatively a common goal. In addition to direct physical contact, factors such as imagined contact, the knowledge about vicarious contact of another ingroup member, and contact by using electronic media have shown to be effective. Contact works because it reduces mutual anxieties, increases empathy for the other group, delivers information about the outgroup and reduces ethnocentric views on the ingroup and its norms as well as its behaviour routines. In order to ensure that contact experiences with single members of an outgroup generalize to prejudice about the whole outgroup, group memberships of the interaction partners have to be salient - if needed after a first phase of person-focused interaction. People, especially those with high prejudice, sometimes try to avoid contact. Negative contact increases prejudice, however, it happens less frequently compared to positive contact. Contact reduces prejudice in low-status groups to a lesser extent than in dominant groups. In addition, contact with members of a dominant group can undermine readiness for political mobilization against injustice in the low-status group. Contact can be promising if used as intervention strategy to reduce prejudice and escalation in conflict between groups: The paper presents examples of applications of contact interventions in schools and in housing policy, as a means to improve mutual understandings of the police and of minority groups, as well as after violent conflicts, such as war and civil war. Contact can help; however, it cannot be seen as a substitute for policies focussing on the reduction of injustice., Kontakt zwischen Mitgliedern unterschiedlicher Gruppen kann helfen, Vorurteile zwischen den Gruppen, Diskriminierung und Gewalt zu reduzieren.
