High precision experiments with muons and pions often require tracking charged particles with $O(100~\mu\mathrm{m})$ single-hit resolution, possibly with particle identification capabilities, down to very low momenta ($p \lesssim 100$~MeV/$c$). In such conditions, the particle trajectories are strongly affected by the interaction with the detector material, and the reconstruction of the kinematic observables consequently deteriorates. A good compromise between resolution and material budget can be obtained with a Time Projection Chamber (TPC), if very light gases and a high-granularity readout are used. In this paper, we present a characterization of the GridPix detector in helium-isobutane gas mixtures, within a TPC with 9~cm maximum drift. Measurements of the main electron drift properties for these gas mixtures are also presented., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, submitted to JINST

High Energy Physics - Lattice - Abstract
We present the nonperturbative computation of renormalization factors in the RI'-(S)MOM schemes for the QCD gauge field ensembles generated by the CLS (coordinated lattice simulations) effort with three flavors of nonperturbatively improved Wilson (clover) quarks. We use ensembles with the standard (anti-)periodic boundary conditions in the time direction as well as gauge field configurations with open boundary conditions. Besides flavor-nonsinglet quark-antiquark operators with up to two derivatives we also consider three-quark operators with up to one derivative. For the RI'-SMOM scheme results we make use of the recently calculated three-loop conversion factors to the modified minimal subtraction scheme. The present version of the paper contains an Addendum with additional analytical expressions and updated results., Comment: 41 pages, 24 figures, 4 ancillary files; v2: additional clarifications and references, results unchanged; v3: contains an addendum with updated results

With the ultimate goal of developing a pixel-based readout for a TPC at the ILC, a GridPix readout system consisting of one Timepix3 chip with an integrated amplification grid was embedded in a prototype detector. The performance was studied in a testbeam with 2.5 GeV electrons at the ELSA accelerator in Bonn. The error on the track position measurement both in the drift direction and in the readout plane is dominated by diffusion. Systematic uncertainties are limited to below 10 $\mu$m. The GridPix can detect single ionization electrons with high efficiency, which allows for energy loss measurements and particle identification. From a truncated sum, an energy loss (dE/dx) resolution of 4.1% is found for an effective track length of 1 m. Using the same type of chips, a Quad module was developed that can be tiled to cover a TPC readout plane at the ILC. Simulation studies show that a pixel readout can improve the momentum resolution of a TPC at the ILC by about 20%., Comment: Talk presented at the International Workshop on Future Linear Colliders (LCWS2018), Arlington, Texas, 22-26 October 2018. It has been observed in multiple lattice determinations of isovector axial and pseudoscalar nucleon form factors, that, despite the fact that the partial conservation of the axialvector current is fulfilled on the level of correlation functions, the corresponding relation for form factors (sometimes called the generalized Goldberger-Treiman relation in the literature) is broken rather badly. In this work we trace this difference back to excited state contributions and propose a new projection method that resolves this problem. We demonstrate the efficacy of this method by computing the axial and pseudoscalar form factors as well as related quantities on ensembles with two flavors of improved Wilson fermions using pion masses down to 150 MeV. To this end, we perform the $z$-expansion with analytically enforced asymptotic behaviour and extrapolate to the physical point.

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
We present the first prototype of a novel thermal neutron detector using the time projection method. The system consists of 8 TimePix ASICS with postprocessed InGrid meshes. Each ASIC has 256 x 256 pixels of 55 mum x 55mum in size with the capability to measure charge or time. This allows to visualize entire conversion particle tracks with their spatial and time information and, by using event reconstruction algorithms, discriminate against the background of others. By using the Scalable Readout System the detector as presented here could also be upscaled to much larger active areas. In the current configuration we could achieve a spatial resolution of $\sigma = (115\pm8)$ mum., Comment: Paper submitted to Physica B: Condensed Matter special issue: Proceedings ICNS 2017

Using the second moment of the pion distribution amplitude as an example, we investigate whether lattice calculations of matrix elements of local operators involving covariant derivatives may benefit from the recently proposed momentum smearing technique for hadronic interpolators. Comparing the momentum smearing technique to the traditional Wuppertal smearing we find - at equal computational cost - a considerable reduction of the statistical errors. The present investigation was carried out using $N_f=2+1$ dynamical non-perturbatively order $a$ improved Wilson fermions on lattices of different volumes and pion masses down to 220 MeV.

Many patients suffering from sepsis are treated on intensive care units and many of them require mechanical ventilation under sedation or general anesthesia. Propofol, a drug used for these purposes, is known to interact with polymorphonuclear granulocytes (PMNs). Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of propofol on PMN functions after experimental Gram-negative induced sepsis using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation. Methods: A total of 34 granulocyte-enriched samples were collected from healthy subjects. PMNs were isolated by density gradient centrifugation and incubated simultaneously with either 6 μg/mL or 60 μg/mL propofol, or none (control). Additionally, the experimental sepsis samples were incubated with either 40 pg/mL or 400 pg/mL LPS. Live cell imaging was conducted in order to observe granulocyte chemotactic migration, ROS production, and NETosis. Flow cytometry was used to analyze viability and antigen expression. Results: Propofol led to significantly reduced PMN track length (p < 0.001) and track speed (p < 0.014) after LPS-induced sepsis in a dose-dependent manner. NETosis (p = 0.018) and ROS production (p = 0.039) were accelerated by propofol without LPS incubation, indicating improved immune function. Propofol also ameliorated LPS-induced increased NETosis and ROS-production. Antigen expression for CD11b, CD62l and CD66b was unaffected by propofol. Conclusion: Propofol improves LPS-induced exaggerated PMN activation in an ex vivo model. Beneficial effects due to restored immune function in septic patients might be possible, but needs further investigation. Keywords: polymorphonuclear neutrophils, sepsis, propofol, immune modulation, LPS

- Abstract
We present experiments with cold atoms in optical dipole potentials which are directed towards developing an integrated coherent atom optics with micro-optical systems. We describe an experiment on evaporative cooling in a far-detuned optical dipole trap for ⁸⁷Rb. The dipole trap is created by a solid state laser at a wavelength of 1030 nm. To achieve high initial phase space densities allowing for efficient evaporative cooling, we have optimised the loading process from a magneto-optical trap into the dipole trap. Starting with an initial phase space density of 2 × 10⁻⁴ the trap depth was ramped down and temperatures below 200 nK and phase space densities of about 0.2 could be reached. These investigations aim at the creation of an ’all-optical’ BEC based on a simple experimental scheme. As an example for an integrated atom optical system, we present the transport of atoms in a ring-shaped guiding structure, i.e. optical storage ring, for cold atoms which is produced by a micro-fabricated ring lens.

Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of clinically used doses of bupivacaine and lidocaine on granulocyte function with regard to migration, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, neutrophil extracellular traps (NETosis) formation, and viability. Methods: A total of 38 granulocyte-enriched samples from healthy subjects were obtained by whole blood lysis. Polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) samples were incubated simultaneously with different concentrations of either bupivacaine (0.03– 3.16 mmol/L) or lidocaine (0.007– 14.21 mmol/L), or without drug (control). Live cell imaging was conducted in order to observe granulocyte chemotaxis, migration, ROS production, and NETosis. Flow cytometry was used to analyze viability and antigen expression. Results: The track length (TL) of PMNs exposed to bupivacaine concentrations of 0.16 mmol/L and above significantly decreased compared to the control. Low concentrations of lidocaine were associated with slight but significant increases in TL, whereas this changed with concentrations above 1.4 mmol/L, showing a significant decrease in TL. PMN incubated with bupivacaine concentrations of 1.58 mmol/L and above or lidocaine concentrations of at least 3.6 mmol/L showed no migration or chemotaxis at all. Time to onset of maximal ROS production and time for half-maximal NETosis decreased in a dose-dependent manner for both substances. Equipotency in NETosis induction was reached by bupivacaine (1.1 mmol/L) at significantly lower concentrations than lidocaine (7.96 mmol/L). Cell viability and oxidative burst were unaffected by LAs.Conclusion: Local anesthetics in clinically used doses ameliorate granulocyte defense mechanisms, thus indicating their potentially decisive effect during the perioperative period. Keywords: local anesthetics, granulocytes, immune modulation, surgical trauma, inflammation

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
The research field of spintronics has sought, over the past 25 years and through several materials science tracks, a source of highly spin-polarized current at room temperature. Organic spinterfaces, which consist in an interface between a ferromagnetic metal and a molecule, represent the most promising track as demonstrated for a handful of interface candidates. How general is this effect? We deploy topographical and spectroscopic techniques to show that a strongly spin-polarized interface arises already between ferromagnetic cobalt and mere carbon atoms. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy show how a dense semiconducting carbon film with a low band gap of about 0.4 eV is formed atop the metallic interface. Spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals a high degree of spin polarization at room temperature of carbon-induced interface states at the Fermi energy. From both our previous study of cobalt/phthalocyanine spinterfaces and present x-ray photoemission spectroscopy studies of the cobalt/carbon interface, we infer that these highly spin-polarized interface states arise mainly from sp2-bonded carbon atoms. We thus demonstrate the molecule-agnostic, generic nature of the spinterface formation.

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We investigate effects of the local structure on the excitonic transport in C60 thin films by means of temperature-dependent photoluminescence quenching studies in a range of 5 to 300 K. Exciton motion in the X-ray amorphous layers indicates thermally activated transport initiated above 80 K accompanied by a thermalization of excitations into low lying states within the excitonic density of states. Discontinuities in the temperature-dependent photoluminescence behavior can be attributed to a continuous phase transition at 80 K and a first order phase transition at 180 K, thereby revealing structural information on the local film morphology in the C60 films.

A detailed interface study was conducted on a Fe/MgO/Fe system using laser assisted 3D atom probe. It exhibits an additional oxide formation at the second interface of the multilayer structure independent of laser wavelength, laser fluence and the thickness of the tunnel barrier. We have shown with the help of simulation that this phenomena is caused by the field evaporation of two layers having two different evaporation

Condensed Matter - Statistical Mechanics - Abstract
We study certain aspects of the effective, occasionally called collective, description of complex quantum systems within the framework of the path integral formalism, in which the environment is integrated out. Generalising the standard Feynman-Vernon Caldeira-Leggett model to include a non-linear coupling between ``particle'' and environment, and considering a particular spectral density of the coupling, a coordinate-dependent mass (or velocity-dependent potential) is obtained. The related effective quantum theory, which depends on the proper discretisation of the path integral, is derived and discussed. As a result, we find that in general a simple effective low-energy Hamiltonian, in which only the coordinate-dependent mass enters, cannot be formulated. The quantum theory of weakly coupled superconductors and the quantum dynamics of vortices in Josephson junction arrays are physical examples where these considerations, in principle, are of relevance., Comment: 13 pages, no figures

The general aim of this thesis is to investigate experimentally airfoil trailing edge noise reduction using various trailing edge geometries. The work presented in this thesis is part of the FP7 European Project FLOCON. This thesis focuses on sawtooth serrations and a detailed study is conducted in which thirty seven sawtooth trailing edges are tested for reducing the noise at various flow velocities and angles of attack. Broadband noise reductions of up to 5 dB are obtained below some critical frequency above which the noise is increased. The mechanisms by which the noise is changed in the presence of sawtooth serrations are also investigated experimentally by measuring the changes introduced in the unsteady surface pressure near the edge, the turbulence in the boundary layer and in the near wake, and also using Howe's model [66] as a reference for comparisons. Generally, it is shown that noise reductions occur due to an attenuation of the interaction between incident and scattered pressures, which results in a decrease of up to a half of the phase speed along the edges compared with the corresponding straight edge. The noise increase is shown to be caused by a cross-flow being forced through the valleys of the serrations by the pressure difference between the two sides of the airfoil near the trailing edge. Four novel trailing edge geometries are also tested to address the high frequency noise increase observed with sawtooth serrations. These are the slits, the sawtooth with holes, the slitted sawtooth and the random trailing edges. The slitted sawtooth are shown to provide a good alternative to sawtooth serrations, and afford similar levels of noise reductions while limiting the high frequency noise increase to no more than 1 dB. Random trailing edges also show reasonable levels of broadband noise reductions of up to 3 dB and no increase at high frequencies. Finally, serrations are used simultaneously at the trailing edge of an upstream airfoil and at the leading edge of a downstream airfoil to reduce trailing edge noise and interaction noise of the airfoils in a tandem configuration. Broadband reductions of up to 8.5 dB are obtained using the slitted sawtooth trailing edge and the leading edge serrations designed by ONERA. It is shown that most of the noise reduction is provided by a reduction of the airfoil leading edge response due to the leading edge serrations, but that sawtooth slitted serrations provide up to about 3.5 dB additional broadband noise reductions due to a reduction in its wake turbulence.

43. The role of prestimulus brain activity in long-term memory encoding

616.8 - Abstract
It has been shown that brain activity before an item can predict whether this item will later be remembered. However, the cognitive mechanisms underlying this so-called prestimulus brain activity are poorly understood. The studies in this PhD thesis addressed the role of prestimulus neural activity in long-term memory encoding and whether this activity is under voluntary control. To allow better dissociation between brain activity before and after an item, electroencephalography (EEG) was used due to its high temporal resolution. In a series of studies EEG data were analyzed in terms of Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) and oscillatory power in the theta frequency band (4-8 Hz) that plays a crucial role in memory processes. The findings demonstrate that brain activity preceding a stimulus is indeed under a person‟s control. In one experiment, ERP and frontal theta prestimulus activity before an item was only evident when participants were highly motivated to encode an upcoming item. In another experiment, ERP prestimulus activity only emerged when participants prioritized encoding over a concurrent task. These studies suggest that, at least, some prestimulus activities reflect preparatory processes that depend on the available cognitive resources. Two further experiments demonstrated that frontal prestimulus encoding-related theta power is specific to semantic encoding conditions. Finally, a series of behavioural experiments showed that memory performance does not differ depending on the opportunity to prepare during encoding. The findings of my PhD thesis suggest that (i) some prestimulus signals (i.e. frontal theta) reflect a preparatory process ahead of semantic encoding, (ii) and, most importantly, prestimulus signals (i.e. ERPs and frontal theta) reflect active preparatory processes for long-term memory formation. The results of this thesis could lead to the development of new strategies of how to improve memory, especially in clinical settings.
