Adaptive responses to climate change, based on heritable variation in stress tolerance, may be important for plant population persistence. It is unclear which populations will mount the strongest future adaptive responses. It may be fruitful to identify populations that have escaped trade-offs among performance traits, which can hinder adaptation. Barring strong genetic constraints, the extent of trade-offs may depend on spatial relationships among climate variables shaping different traits. Here, we test for climate-driven ecotypic variation and trade-offs among drought and freezing sensitivity, and growth, for Lemmon's willow (Salix lemmonii) in a common garden study of 90 genotypes from 38 sites in the Sierra Nevada, USA. Salix lemmonii exhibits ecotypic variation in leaf turgor loss point, a measure of drought sensitivity, from -0.95 to -0.74 MPa along a gradient of spring snowpack. We also find variation in spring freezing sensitivity with minimum May temperature. However, we find no trade-off, as the climatic gradients shaping these traits are spatially uncorrelated in our study region, despite being negatively correlated across the Sierra Nevada. Species may escape adaptive trade-offs in geographic regions where climate variables are spatially decoupled. These regions may represent valuable reservoirs of heritable adaptive phenotypic variation.

Preclinical evidence suggests that inter-individual variation in the structure of the hypothalamus at birth is associated with variation in the intrauterine environment, with downstream implications for future disease susceptibility. However, scientific advancement in humans is limited by a lack of validated methods for the automatic segmentation of the newborn hypothalamus. N = 215 healthy full-term infants with paired T1-/T2-weighted MR images across four sites were considered for primary analyses (mean postmenstrual age = 44.3 ± 3.5 weeks, nmale /nfemale  = 110/106). The outputs of FreeSurfers hypothalamic subunit segmentation tools designed for adults (segFS) were compared against those of a novel registration-based pipeline developed here (segATLAS) and against manually edited segmentations (segMAN) as reference. Comparisons were made using Dice Similarity Coefficients (DSCs) and through expected associations with postmenstrual age at scan. In addition, we aimed to demonstrate the validity of the segATLAS pipeline by testing for the stability of inter-individual variation in hypothalamic volume across the first year of life (n = 41 longitudinal datasets available). SegFS and segATLAS segmentations demonstrated a wide spread in agreement (mean DSC = 0.65 ± 0.14 SD; range = {0.03-0.80}). SegATLAS volumes were more highly correlated with postmenstrual age at scan than segFS volumes (n = 215 infants; RsegATLAS 2  = 65% vs. RsegFS 2  = 40%), and segATLAS volumes demonstrated a higher degree of agreement with segMAN reference segmentations at the whole hypothalamus (segATLAS DSC = 0.89 ± 0.06 SD; segFS DSC = 0.68 ± 0.14 SD) and subunit levels (segATLAS DSC = 0.80 ± 0.16 SD; segFS DSC = 0.40 ± 0.26 SD). Human milk (HM) contains macronutrients, micronutrients, and a multitude of other bioactive factors, which can have a long-term impact on infant growth and development. We systematically searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science to synthesize evidence published between 1980 and 2022 on HM components and anthropometry through 2 y of age among term-born infants. From 9992 abstracts screened, 141 articles were included and categorized based on their reporting of HM micronutrients, macronutrients, or bioactive components. Bioactives including hormones, HM oligosaccharides (HMOs), and immunomodulatory components are reported here, based on 75 articles from 69 unique studies reporting observations from 9980 dyads. Research designs, milk collection strategies, sampling times, geographic and socioeconomic settings, reporting practices, and outcomes varied considerably. Meta-analyses were not possible because data collection times and reporting were inconsistent among the studies included. Few measured infant HM intake, adjusted for confounders, precisely captured breastfeeding exclusivity, or adequately described HM collection protocols. Only 5 studies (6%) had high overall quality scores. Hormones were the most extensively examined bioactive with 46 articles (n = 6773 dyads), compared with 13 (n = 2640 dyads) for HMOs and 12 (n = 1422 dyads) for immunomodulatory components. Two studies conducted untargeted metabolomics. Leptin and adiponectin demonstrated inverse associations with infant growth, although several studies found no associations. No consistent associations were found between individual HMOs and infant growth outcomes. Among immunomodulatory components in HM, IL-6 demonstrated inverse relationships with infant growth. Current research on HM bioactives is largely inconclusive and is insufficient to address the complex composition of HM. Future research should ideally capture HM intake, use biologically relevant anthropometrics, and integrate components across categories, embracing a systems biology approach to better understand how HM components work independently and synergistically to influence infant growth.

Human milk (HM) provides a plethora of nutritional and non-nutritional compounds that support infant development. For many compounds, concentrations vary substantially among mothers and across lactation, and their impact on infant growth is poorly understood. We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science to synthesize evidence published between 1980 and 2022 on HM components and anthropometry through 2 y of age among term-born infants. Outcomes included weight-for-length, length-for-age, weight-for-age, body mass index (in kg/m2)-for-age, and growth velocity. From 9992 abstracts screened, 144 articles were included and categorized based on their reporting of HM micronutrients, macronutrients, or bioactive components. Micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) are reported here, based on 28 articles involving 2526 mother-infant dyads. Studies varied markedly in their designs, sampling times, geographic and socioeconomic settings, reporting practices, and the HM analytes and infant anthropometrics measured. Meta-analysis was not possible because data were sparse for most micronutrients. The most-studied minerals were zinc (15 articles, 1423 dyads) and calcium (7 articles, 714 dyads). HM iodine, manganese, calcium, and zinc concentrations were positively associated with several outcomes (each in ≥2 studies), whereas magnesium (in a single study) was negatively associated with linear growth during early lactation. However, few studies measured HM intake, adjusted for confounders, provided adequate information about complementary and formula feeding, or adequately described HM collection protocols. Only 4 studies (17%) had high overall quality scores. The biological functions of individual HM micronutrients are likely influenced by other HM components; yet, only 1 study analyzed data from multiple micronutrients simultaneously, and few addressed other HM components. Thus, available evidence on this topic is largely inconclusive and fails to address the complex composition of HM. High-quality research employing chronobiology and systems biology approaches is required to understand how HM components work independently and together to influence infant growth and to identify new avenues for future maternal, newborn, or infant nutritional interventions.

Among exclusively breastfed infants, human milk (HM) provides complete nutrition in the first mo of life and remains an important energy source as long as breastfeeding continues. Consisting of digestible carbohydrates, proteins, and amino acids, as well as fats and fatty acids, macronutrients in human milk have been well studied; however, many aspects related to their relationship to growth in early life are still not well understood. We systematically searched Medline, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science to synthesize evidence published between 1980 and 2022 on HM components and anthropometry through 2 y of age among term-born healthy infants. From 9992 abstracts screened, 57 articles reporting observations from 5979 dyads were included and categorized based on their reporting of HM macronutrients and infant growth. There was substantial heterogeneity in anthropometric outcome measurement, milk collection timelines, and HM sampling strategies; thus, meta-analysis was not possible. In general, digestible carbohydrates were positively associated with infant weight outcomes. Protein was positively associated with infant length, but no associations were reported for infant weight. Finally, HM fat was not consistently associated with any infant growth metrics, though various associations were reported in single studies. Fatty acid intakes were generally positively associated with head circumference, except for docosahexaenoic acid. Our synthesis of the literature was limited by differences in milk collection strategies, heterogeneity in anthropometric outcomes and analytical methodologies, and by insufficient reporting of results. Moving forward, HM researchers should accurately record and account for breastfeeding exclusivity, use consistent sampling protocols that account for the temporal variation in HM macronutrients, and use reliable, sensitive, and accurate techniques for HM macronutrient analysis.

Multi-sided platforms must make decisions on both pricing and engineering investment and must continually adjust them as the platform scales over its lifecycle. Engineering investments can be allocated to features that improve a platform's standalone value, social features to take advantage of same-side network effects, or integration tools and boundary resources to facilitate third-party content creation. Guidance in the academic or practitioner literature is not granular. Moreover, relevant normative economic models that consider externalities are rarely dynamic. Hence, there is a gap in knowledge about how to best balance tradeoffs between different strategic decisions throughout the entire platform lifecycle. To begin to address this gap, we explore normative strategies for coordinating pricing and engineering investment decisions on a continuous basis under different ecosystem conditions. We build a simulation model informed by economics and marketing theory and perform extensive sensitivity analyses on key parameters in different ecosystem scenarios over a multi-period lifecycle. We find that pricing and investment strategies must continuously change to perform optimally. In particular, strategies that are most effective at launch often differ from those that are most effective during scaling as well as those most effective at maturity. We also find that the optimal strategy depends strongly on the monetization model and market aversion to price changes. Lastly, we specifically examine four different industry segments: mobile platforms, social media, the sharing economy, and business-to-business. To investigate the effects of ocean acidification (OA) and nitrogen limitation on macroalgae growth and photophysiological responses, Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis was cultured under two main conditions: ambient (Low CO2, LC, 390 matm) and CO2 enriched (High CO2, HC, 1000 matm), with low (LN, 7 mmol L-1) and high (HN, 56 mmol L-1) nitrate. High CO2 levels decreased growth under both LN and HN treatments. HC reduced Chl a, carotenoids, phycoerythrin (PE), and phycocyanin (PC) under HN conditions, while only Chl a decreased under LN conditions. NO3 - uptake rate was restricted under LN compared to HN, while HC enhanced it under HN. Net photosynthetic O2 evolution rates did not differ between CO2 and nitrate treatments. Dark respiration rates were higher under HN, further boosted by HC. The stimulated effective quantum yield (Y(II)) corresponded to decreased non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) under HN conditions. Nitrate, not CO2, showed significant effects on the relative electron transport rate (rETRmax), light use efficiency (a) and saturation light intensity (Ik) that with lowered rETRmax and a under LN culture. Our results indicate that OA may negatively affect Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis growth and alter its photophysiological performance under different nutrient conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate axial length (AL), orbital width (OW) and height (OH) development in congenital microphthalmia and anophthalmia (MICA) using serial ultrasonography measurements. Methods: A longitudinal prospective cohort (n = 74) of unilaterally and bilaterally affected MICA patients was followed from 2013 to 2022 at the university hospital in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Clinical entity, age, severity category based on axial length, conformer treatment and intra‐orbital cysts were registered. The main outcome measures were the absolute and relative growth of AL, OW and OH. Surgical and intra‐orbital cyst cases were described separately. Results: Absolute microphthalmic eye size increased in 27/49 (55%) unilateral MICA eyes, but growth arrest/decrease in the remaining could shift the case to a more severe category over time. A final affected/unaffected orbital symmetry ≥80% was seen in the large majority of unilateral cases (45/46 for OW, 43/46 for OH). Cases with AL < 10.5 mm had orbital symmetry <80% more often. Most orbital symmetry changes were seen in moderate and severe unilateral cases treated with 3D‐printed conformer therapy starting at age <1 year, with 6/10 (60%) symmetry increase, 30% unchanged symmetry and 10% symmetry decrease. All cases older than 6.5 years (n = 6) did not show any change anymore, regardless of treatment. For bilateral and unilateral mild cases, orbital dimensions kept the same proportions during follow‐up, with or without conformer treatment. Conclusions: Using severity categories in MICA based on relative AL may aid the decision to start conformer treatment, as most orbital symmetry changes were seen in moderate and severe unilateral cases receiving 3D‐printed conformer therapy that started under age 1. Adding milk replacer powder (MRP) to whole milk during the entire preweaning period can increase growth but raises concern because of low starter feed intake and slumps in ADG at weaning and postweaning. In the current study, effects of adding MRP to pasteurized whole milk (PWM) during d 10 to 41 or d 10 to 59 of age were investigated in comparison with PWM. Calves (24 females and 21 males; 39.8 ± 1.85 kg BW) were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 treatments: (1) conventional protocol, 5 L/d PWM from d 3 to 56, and 2.5 L/d from d 57 to 59 of age (CONV; TS intake = 31.9 kg), (2) short duration of adding MRP to PWM protocol, 5 L/d PWM from d 3 to 9, 5 L/d PWM + MRP (18% TS) from d 10 to 41, 5 L/d PWM from d 42 to 56, and 2.5 L/d PWM from d 57 to 59 (SHD; TS intake = 42.3 kg), (3) long duration of adding MRP to PWM protocol, 5 L/d PWM from d 3–9, 5 L/d PWM + MRP from d 10–56, 2.5 L/d PWM + MRP from d 57–59 (LD; TS intake = 47.7 kg). The osmolality of PWM and PWM + MRP was 278 and 519 mOsm/L, respectively. Calves were weaned on d 60, and the study terminated on d 75. There was a treatment × time interaction for starter intake, where intake was greater for CONV than other treatments from d 14–41 and was greater in CONV than LD during d 42 to 48 and d 56 to 62 of age. Final BW was lower in CONV calves than LD calves. Weaning BW and overall hip height were lower in CONV calves than other treatments. The CONV calves had lower ADG at d 14 to 27 and d 35 to 41, and SHD calves had lower ADG at d 42 to 48 than other treatments. Calves fed CONV treatment had lower ruminal acetate and greater propionate than SHD calves during preweaning. Calves fed LD treatment had lower total VFA and tended to have greater ruminal pH than other treatments. Calves fed CONV had greater neutrophils and neutrophils/lymphocytes ratio and lower lymphocytes than other treatments. Glucose concentration was greater for LD versus other treatments at d 56, and lower for SHD versus other treatments at d 70 of study. Insulin concentration and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance index were greater in LD compared with other treatments during preweaning but were not different postweaning. Serum BHB was greater in CONV than other treatments. Albumin was greater for CONV versus other treatments at d 56, however, it was greater in LD-fed calves at d 70 of study. Results indicate that feeding a PWM + MRP to the calves during the entire preweaning period resulted in lower starter feed intake around weaning, but overall starter intake was similar with a greater final BW and fewer health-related issues throughout the study. A two-year field experiment was conducted at Lovely Professional University, Phagwara during the Rabi season of 2018–2019 and 2019-20 to study the effect of crop establishment methods and sowing schedule on the growth and yield of wheat under the rice-wheat cropping system. The experiment comprised different rice residue management-based wheat establishment methods, sowing dates, and varying nitrogen levels. The results confirmed that growth, yield and yield attributes were all influenced by different crop establishment methods, sowing dates and level of nitrogen application. The results showed that maximum plant height, number of tillers per plant, number of spikes per plant, spike length, number of grains per spike and grain yield were observed under 20th November sowing (timely sowing) and with 100% RDN (recommended dose of nitrogen). Moreover, the maximum number of spikes per plant, spike length and grain yield were significantly highest for the residue incorporation method of wheat establishment. The optimum time of sowing also improved the grain yield of wheat. Among the different crop establishment methods, the best attainment of available nitrogen status in soil was found in residue incorporation treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Although neuromuscular function varies significantly between strength and endurance-trained adult athletes, it has yet to be ascertained whether such differences manifest by early adolescence. The aim of the present study was to compare knee extensor neuromuscular characteristics between adolescent athletes who are representative of strength (wrestling) or endurance (triathlon) sports. Methods: Twenty-three triathletes (TRI), 12 wrestlers (WRE) and 12 untrained (CON) male adolescents aged 13 to 15 years participated in the present study. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) knee extensor (KE) torque was measured, and 100-Hz magnetic doublets were delivered to the femoral nerve during and after KE MVIC to quantify the voluntary activation level (%VA). The doublet peak torque (T100Hz) and normalized vastus lateralis (VL) and rectus femoris (RF) EMG (EMG/M-wave) activities were quantified. VL and RF muscle architecture was also assessed at rest using ultrasound. Results: Absolute and relative (to body mass) KE MVIC torques were significantly higher in WRE than TRI and CON (p < 0.05), but comparable between TRI and CON. No significant differences were observed between groups for %VA, T100Hz or either VL or RF muscle thickness. However, VL EMG/M-wave was higher, RF fascicle length longer, and pennation angle smaller in WRE than TRI and CON (all p < 0.05). Conclusion: The wrestlers were stronger than triathletes and controls, potentially as a result of muscle architectural differences and a greater neural activation. Neuromuscular differences can already be detected by early adolescence in males between predominantly endurance and strength sports, which may result from selection bias and/or physical training. Soil contamination with chromium (Cr) is becoming a primary ecological and health concern, specifically in the Kasur and Sialkot regions of Pakistan. The main objective of the current study was to evaluate the impact of foliar application of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) (0, 25, 50, 100 mg L−1) and Fe NPs (0, 5, 10, 20 mg L−1) in red sails lettuce plants grown in Cr-contaminated soil. Our results showed that both ZnO and Fe NPs improved plant growth, and photosynthetic attributes by minimizing oxidative stress in lettuce plants through the stimulation of antioxidant enzyme activities. At ZnO NPs (100 mgL−1), dry weights of shoots and roots and fresh weights of shoots and roots were improved by 53%, 58%, 34%, and 45%, respectively, as compared to the respective control plants. The Fe NPs treatment (20 mgL−1) increased the dry weight of shoots and the roots and fresh weights of shoots and roots by 53%, 76%, 42%, and 70%, respectively. Application of both NPs reduced the oxidative stress caused by Cr, as evident by the findings of the current study, i.e., at the ZnO NPs (100 mgL−1) and Fe NPs (20 mgL−1), the EL declined by 32% and 44%, respectively, in comparison with respective control plants. Moreover, Fe and ZnO NPs enhanced the Fe and Zn contents in red sails lettuce plants. Application of ZnO NPs at 100 mg L−1 and Fe NPs at 20 mg L−1, improved the Zn and Fe contents in plant leaves by 86%, and 68%, respectively, as compared to the control plants. This showed that the exogenous application of these NPs helped in Zn and Fe fortification in plants. At similar of concenteration ZnO NPs, CAT and APX activities were improved by 52% and 53%, respectively. Similarly, the POD contents were improved by 17% and 45% at 5 and 10 mg/L of Fe NPs. Furthermore, ZnO and Fe NPs limited the Cr uptake by plants, and the concentration of Cr in the leaves of lettuce was under the threshold limit. The exogenous application of ZnO NPs (100 mg L−1) and Fe NPs (20 mg L−1) reduced the Cr uptake in the leaves of red sails lettuce by 57% and 51%, respectively. In conclusion, ZnO and Fe NPs could be used for the improvement of plant growth and biomass as well as nutrient fortification in stressed environments. These findings not only underscore the efficacy of nanoparticle-assisted phytoremediation but also highlight its broader implications for sustainable agriculture and environmental health. However, future studies on other crops with molecular-level investigations are recommended for the validation of the results. Summary: In plants, growth and defence are controlled by many molecular pathways that are antagonistic to one another. This results in a 'growth‐defence trade‐off', where plants temporarily reduce growth in response to pests or diseases. Due to this antagonism, genetic variants that improve resistance often reduce growth and vice versa. Therefore, in natural populations, the most disease resistant individuals are often the slowest growing. In crops, slow growth may translate into a yield penalty, but resistance is essential for protecting yield in the presence of disease. Therefore, plant breeders must balance these traits to ensure optimal yield potential and yield stability. In crops, both qualitative and quantitative disease resistance are often linked with genetic variants that cause yield penalties, but this is not always the case. Furthermore, both crop yield and disease resistance are complex traits influenced by many aspects of the plant's physiology, morphology and environment, and the relationship between the molecular growth‐defence trade‐off and disease resistance‐yield antagonism is not well‐understood. In this article, we highlight research from the last 2 years on the molecular mechanistic basis of the antagonism between defence and growth. We then discuss the interaction between disease resistance and crop yield from a breeding perspective, outlining the complexity and nuances of this relationship and where research can aid practical methods for simultaneous improvement of yield potential and disease resistance. Background: Children with nephrotic syndrome are at risk of obesity and growth impairment from repeated steroid treatment. However, incidence and risk factors for obesity and short stature remain uncertain, which is a barrier to preventative care. Our aim was to determine risk, timing, and predictors of obesity and short stature among children with nephrotic syndrome. Methods: We evaluated obesity and longitudinal growth among children (1–18 years) enrolled in Insight into Nephrotic Syndrome: Investigating Genes, Health, and Therapeutics. We included children with nephrotic syndrome diagnosed between 1996–2019 from the Greater Toronto Area, Canada, excluding congenital or secondary nephrotic syndrome. Primary outcomes were obesity (body mass index Z-score ≥ + 2) and short stature (height Z-score ≤ -2). We evaluated prevalence of obesity and short stature at enrolment (< 1-year from diagnosis) and incidence during follow-up. Cox proportional hazards models determined the association between nephrotic syndrome classification and new-onset obesity and short stature. Results: We included 531 children with nephrotic syndrome (30% frequently relapsing by 1-year). At enrolment, obesity prevalence was 23.5%, 51.8% were overweight, and 4.9% had short stature. Cumulative incidence of new-onset obesity and short stature over median 4.1-year follow-up was 17.7% and 3.3% respectively. Children with frequently relapsing or steroid dependent nephrotic syndrome within 1-year of diagnosis were at increased risk of new-onset short stature (unadjusted hazard ratio 3.99, 95%CI 1.26–12.62) but not obesity (adjusted hazard ratio 1.56, 95%CI 0.95–2.56). Children with ≥ 7 and ≥ 15 total relapses were more likely to develop obesity and short stature, respectively. Conclusions: Obesity is common among children with nephrotic syndrome early after diagnosis. Although short stature was uncommon overall, children with frequently relapsing or steroid dependent disease are at increased risk of developing short stature. Despite significant medical and technical improvements in the field of dialysis, the morbidity and mortality among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 5 on dialysis remains extremely high. Hemodiafiltration (HDF), a dialysis method that combines the two main principles of hemodialysis (HD) and hemofiltration—diffusion and convection—has had a positive impact on survival when delivered with a high convective dose. Improved outcomes with HDF have been attributed to the following factors: HDF removes middle molecular weight uremic toxins including inflammatory cytokines, increases hemodynamic stability, and reduces inflammation and oxidative stress compared to conventional HD. Two randomized trials in adults have shown improved survival with HDF compared to high-flux HD. A large prospective cohort study in children has shown that HDF attenuated the progression of cardiovascular disease, improved bone turnover and growth, reduced inflammation, and improved blood pressure control compared to conventional HD. Importantly, children on HDF reported fewer headaches, dizziness, and cramps; had increased physical activity; and improved school attendance compared to those on HD. In this educational review, we discuss the technical aspects of HDF and results from pediatric studies, comparing outcomes on HDF vs. conventional HD. Convective volume, the cornerstone of treatment with HDF and a key determinant of outcomes in adult randomized trials, is discussed in detail, including the practical aspects of achieving an optimal convective volume. Purpose: Rett syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder associated with methyl CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene mutations. We aimed to characterize the long-term nutritional and gastrointestinal course of Rett syndrome in a large national patient population. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients followed during 1991–2021 at a national center for Rett syndrome. The data retrieved included clinical features, laboratory and genetic analyses. Continuous anthropometric measurements were calculated for the closest visit to the median ages: 2.5, 7.5, 12.5 and 17.5 years. Kaplan Meier curves were used to describe the appearance of clinical manifestations during the follow up period. Generalized estimating equation models were used to compare repeated measurements. Results: Included were 141 patients (139 females), the median age at the first visit was 3.2 years (interquartile range [IQR] 2.3–5.7), and the median length of follow-up was 94.5 months (IQR 28.6–153.3). Mean weight, height and BMI Z-scores were -1.09, -1.03 and -0.56, respectively, at median age 2.5 years; and deteriorated to -3.95, -3.01 and -1.19, respectively, at median age 17.5 years (P < 0.001). Gastrointestinal features included constipation (47.5%, 67/141) and chewing/feeding difficulties (20%, 28/141) at presentation; and an additional 47 (33.3%) and 24 (17.0%), respectively, during follow up. Twenty-eight patients (20%) developed aerophagia and 44 (31.2%) gastroesophageal reflux. No relation was found between genetic mutation types and clinical manifestations. GI manifestations were more prevalent in patients with typical form of Rett syndrome. Conclusions: Anthropometric parameters were shown to deteriorate with age, regardless of the specific genetic mutation. Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is detected through a newborn screening program in Iran, enabling early detection and prompt treatment. This study addresses the longitudinal growth trajectory of Iranian children with CH and explores associated factors during the first 3 years of life. Data from 1474 children with CH in Isfahan, Iran (2002–2022), were analyzed. Weight, height, and head circumference were measured, and z-scores for age were calculated. Group-based trajectory modeling was applied to distinct growth trajectories. Factors influencing growth patterns, including gender, treatment initiation age, delivery method, parental consanguinity, history of familial hypothyroidism, and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels at 3–7 days, were investigated. Thirty-seven percent of children diagnosed with CH faced a delay in weight, while 36.6% experienced stunted height, and 25.7% showed a retardation in head circumference growth. The initiation of treatment, parental consanguinity, and family history of hypothyroidism varied among these groups. Children exhibiting an optimal growth pattern in the initial 3 years of life demonstrated lower average TSH levels. Conclusion: This research emphasizes the complexity of managing CH and stresses the importance of tailoring interventions based on individualized characteristics and the ongoing growth patterns of the children. Future research is required to understand the intricate relationships between growth patterns and various determinants and optimize the growth and developmental outcomes of children with CH. Urban grasslands span climates and topography in soils with variable water infiltration and drainage rates that result in occasional waterlogging stress, while data on grass species tolerance to waterlogging stress is scant. Whole plant responses to waterlogging stress among cool‐season grass species were quantified in a controlled environment. The following grasses were grown in well‐drained vs. waterlogged soil for 55 d: strong creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra ssp. rubra), slender creeping red fescue (F. rubra ssp. littoralis), Chewings fescue (F. rubra ssp. commutata), hard fescue (F. brevipila), tall fescue (F. arundinacea syn. Schedonorus arundinaceus), Kentucky bluegrasses (Poa pratensis), annual bluegrass (P. annua), rough bluegrass (P. trivialis), creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), and alkaligrass (Puccinellia distans). Five cultivars of each fine fescue (Festuca spp.) taxon were included for comparison. When grown in waterlogged soil compared to well‐drained conditions, relative differences generally ranged from −3% to −26% (shoots) and −13% to −33% (roots) for creeping bentgrass, tall fescue, and Kentucky bluegrass indicating higher waterlogging stress tolerance. The relative differences ranged from −18% to −43% in shoots and −3% to −34% in roots for annual bluegrass and perennial ryegrass indicating fair performance under waterlogging stress. Fine fescues, rough bluegrass, and alkaligrass exhibited the poorest performance during waterlogging stress with plant responses ranging from −12% to −64% (shoots) and −17% to −73% (roots). Negative whole plant responses among cultivars of four fine fescue taxa were similar. The selection of grasses tolerant to waterlogging stress will be important in developing resilient landscapes. Child maltreatment poses not only immediate danger, but as a type of toxic stress, it creates higher risk of biologic dysfunction later in life. Pediatricians are in a unique position to diagnose child maltreatment, but they need evidence-based guidance for when to initiate screening when injury is occult. In this retrospective cohort study of 855 pediatric patients diagnosed with child maltreatment, researchers explored whether type or number of diagnoses was associated with abnormal pediatric weight in either direction. Diagnoses and weight assessed at intake were extracted from medical records for analysis. Statistically significant associations were found between weight classification and child maltreatment type as well as diagnosis count. Neglect was most frequently diagnosed, and children with ≥2 diagnoses were more likely to be classified as underweight, overweight, or obese. Prematurity has physical consequences, such as lower birth weight, decreased muscle mass and increased risk of adult‐onset metabolic disease. Insulin‐like growth factor 1 (IGF‐1) has therapeutic potential to improve the growth and quality of muscle and tendon in premature births, and thus attenuate some of these sequalae. We investigated the effect of IGF‐1 on extensor carpi radialis muscle and biceps brachii tendon of preterm piglets. The preterm group consisted of 19‐day‐old preterm (10 days early) piglets, treated with either IGF‐1 or vehicle. Term controls consisted of groups of 9‐day‐old piglets (D9) and 19‐day‐old piglets (D19). Muscle samples were analysed by immunofluorescence to determine the cross‐sectional area (CSA) of muscle fibres, fibre type composition, satellite cell content and central nuclei‐containing fibres in the muscle. Tendon samples were analysed for CSA, collagen content and maturation, and vascularization. Gene expression of the tendon was measured by RT‐qPCR. Across all endpoints, we found no significant effect of IGF‐1 treatment on preterm piglets. Preterm piglets had smaller muscle fibre CSA compared to D9 and D19 control group. Satellite cell content was similar across all groups. For tendon, we found an effect of age on tendon CSA, and mRNA levels of COL1A1, tenomodulin and scleraxis. Immunoreactivity for elastin and CD31, and several markers of tendon maturation, were increased in D9 compared to the preterm piglets. Collagen content was similar across groups. IGF‐1 treatment of preterm‐born piglets does not influence the growth and maturation of skeletal muscle and tendon. Commercial thinning is a silvicultural treatment that has been practiced for centuries in Europe. However, in Eastern Canada, its application to naturally regenerated stands is much more recent, and long-term monitoring of this treatment realized in an operational context is rare. We monitored 135 paired sample plots (thinned and control) over a 20-year period. The plots are in stands dominated by either black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), or balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and distributed throughout the boreal and temperate forests of Québec (Canada). Twenty years after treatment, thinning increased quadratic mean diameter (QMD) for balsam fir (1.7 cm) and jack pine (0.7 cm), while for black spruce the change in QMD varied according to the QMD before treatment. Periodic annual increment in gross merchantable volume of thinned and control plots was similar for balsam fir and jack pine but was less in thinned black spruce plots during the first 5 years. Thinning did not affect mortality, which remained low until 15 years after treatment. As commercial thinning should gain popularity over the next years, our study provides a benchmark of the expected effects when the treatment is performed in an operational context. Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) is an important foodfish species. It has been cultured in Singapore since the 1980s. A selective breeding program to improve growth, meat quality and disease resistance has been ongoing in Singapore since 2004. In 2012, outbreaks of the big belly disease (BBD) occurred in two batches of offspring generated by a mass-cross among F1 brooders in a hatchery. After the outbreaks, only 437 survived in 6000 F2 juveniles. Molecular parentage analysis with 10 microsatellites revealed that four parents (F1) produced high percentage of offspring that survived the BBD outbreaks. Eighty-two BBD survivor offspring (F2) were selected based on their growth performance at 90 days post hatch (dph), family origin and allelic diversity. They were used as brooders to generate F3. In a period of five years, these F2 brooders produced six batches of offspring, where no outbreak of BBD occurred. In the same period, outbreaks of BBD occurred in 4 out of 18 batches produced by F2 brooders selected for growth, with mortality rates ranging from 85.1% to 95.4%. In F3, the average body weight (57.1 ± 1.09 g, n = 3068) of the line for BBD survival was slightly lower than that (60.6 ± 2.29 g, n = 4280) of the line for growth at 90 dph. In both lines, the body weight of F3 was much higher than that (46.90 ± 0.19 g, n = 12117) of F2. The genetic diversity in the line for BBD survival (F3) was much lower than that in F3 line for growth due to small founder population. These data indicate that the selection of BBD survival during BBD outbreaks using molecular parentage analysis is effective to reduce BBD outbreaks. The relationship between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and secondary vegetation (SV) species at early phenological stages is critical for the successful establishment of these plants on disturbance sites in temperate forests. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the effect of AMF colonization on the early phenological stages (germination and early growth) of three shrub species present in the SV of a temperate forest in central Mexico. We collected soil from different sites in the Abies religiosa forest in central Mexico. We collected seeds of Acaena elongata, Ageratina glabrata, and Solanum pubigerum. We used a controlled experimental design with pasteurized soil (-AMF treatments) and unpasteurized soil (+ AMF treatments). We monitored germination percentage, growth (shoot and root weight and total biomass), AMF root colonization, and the mycorrhizal response index (MRI) for each plant species. All three species tested benefited by AMF, showing higher germination rates. Shoot and root weight and total biomass were significantly higher in the + AMF treatment. Solanum pubigerum showed greater stem length and Ageratina glabrata showed greater root development due to AMF. Ageratina glabrata and Acaena elongata were the most responsive to AMF as indicated by MRI. This research underscores the critical role of AMF in the early phenological stages of SV and highlights the potential ecological benefits of AMF in supporting plant germination and plant growth. Acid rain causes visible symptoms on foliage which can lead to severe economic loss to the growers. In this study, two cultivars of Beta vulgaris L. (Palak, an economically important leafy vegetable) were subjected to simulated acid rain (SAR) of pH 5.6, 5.0, and 4.5 to assess the cultivar-specific physiological, biochemical, growth, and nutritional responses at different growth stages compared to pH 7.0 (control). Higher SAR acidity caused enhanced accretion of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation in both the cultivars but the degree of increase was higher in Anupama compared to Allgreen at the vegetative stage (VS). Both Allgreen and Anupama displayed leaf injury with more severity in Anupama leading to the greater loss of chlorophyll and the plant's photochemical efficiency. Antioxidative enzymatic activities (superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, peroxidase, and glutathione reductase) and non-enzymatic metabolites (total phenolics, flavonoids, ascorbic acids and thiol content) didn't show a significant effect of SAR upto pH 5.6 and thereafter variable responses were observed in both the cultivars at different growth stages. The cytoplasmic pH didn't alter in Allgreen at pH 5.6 whereas decreased significantly in Anupama. The decrease in cytoplasmic pH was more in Anupama compared to Allgreen at pH 5.0 and 4.5. The growth, biomass, and fresh weight of leaves enhanced in Allgreen at VS whereas reduced in Anupama at all growth stages under SAR. The soluble protein, starch and total soluble sugar were more suppressed in Anupama compared to Allgreen under SAR. The present findings demonstrate that SARs of pH < 5.6 induced foliar injury, and disturbed physiological and biochemical traits leading to reductions in the growth, yield, and quality of palak, however, Anupama was severely affected than Allgreen. The present study was designed to assess the allelopathic potential of invasive weed Ageratina adenophora leaf extracts on seed germination and seedling development efficiency of native tree [viz. Quercus leucotrichophora A. Camus (Oak) and Pinus roxburghii Sarg. (Pine)] and crop [(Triticum aestivum L. (Wheat) and Lens culinaris Medik. (Lentil)] species of Kumaun Himalaya. Pot experiments were conducted in the glasshouse of the Botany Department, D.S.B. Campus, Kumaun University Nainital, following a Completely Randomized Block Design (CRBD) with three treatments (C1-25%, C2-50%, and C3-100% of aqueous leaf extract) and one control, each with five replicates. The experiment lasted one year for tree species and continued until the seed maturation phase for crop species. Parameters such as seed germination proportion, root and shoot measurements, biomass, and crop productivity traits were recorded accordingly. Our bioassay results indicated that the inhibitory effect of leaf extracts on the measured traits of the selected native species was proportional to the applied extract concentrations of A. adenophora. Overall, lentil among crops and oak among tree species exhibited more inhibition compared to wheat and pine, respectively. At the highest concentration, reductions of 44%, 34%, 36%, and 24% in biomass production capacity were recorded for wheat, lentil, pine, and oak, respectively, while wheat and lentil productivity decreased by up to 33% and 45%, respectively. These results suggest that water-soluble allelochemicals produced by A. adenophora may impede the establishment of selected crop and tree species in agroecosystems and forest ecosystems invaded by this weed species. However, further studies on the characterization of phytochemicals and their specific role in seed germination and growth are warranted. Furthermore, the allelopathic potential of A. adenophora can be explored for the preparation of biopesticides and nature-friendly option to improve soil health, crop productivity, and reduce environmental pollution and management of this invasive weed. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are among the most produced nanomaterials in the world and are incorporated into several products due to their biocide and physicochemical properties. Since freshwater bodies are AgNPs main final sink, several consequences for biota are expected to occur. With the hypothesis that AgNPs can interact with environmental factors, we analyzed their ecotoxicity in combination with humic acids and algae. In addition to the specific AgNPs behavior in the media, we analyzed the mortality, growth, and phototactic behavior of Chydorus eurynotus (Cladocera) as response variables. While algae promoted Ag+ release, humic acids reduced it by adsorption, and their combination resulted in an intermediated Ag+ release. AgNPs affected C. eurynotus survival and growth, but algae and humic acids reduced AgNPs lethality, especially when combined. The humic acids mitigated AgNP effects in C. eurynotus growth, and both factors improved its phototactic behavior. It is essential to deepen the study of the isolated and combined influences of environmental factors on the ecotoxicity of nanoparticles to achieve accurate predictions under realistic exposure scenarios. Preparing pre-service teachers is a crucial element to consider when looking to improve student success. Many teachers are not given sufficient resources and feel unprepared when entering the profession particularly around the topic of reading instruction. This study examined the effectiveness of an undergraduate course, with an embedded community partnership, designed to train pre-service teachers in the areas of literacy assessment and intervention. In addition to this, upon completion of the course, pre-service teachers are required to take a state proctored exam, measuring the knowledge and ability to apply content that is taught throughout the course. Pre-service teachers must pass the exam in order to go on to the next phase of the education program. We measured the efficacy of the course by administering (a) a teacher knowledge survey focusing on knowledge and practice growth, and (b) the state-based literacy exam pre-service teachers are required to pass as part of their teacher training program. We found that the course, paired with the community-based individualized tutoring program, provided pre-service teachers the opportunity to gain significant knowledge about teaching literacy. They were able to immediately embed evidence-based instruction into their tutoring sessions, and they felt confident about their ability to do this. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reuse of construction and demolition waste (CDW) is of great significance for the reasonable treatment of urban waste and the protection of soil. CDW fines less than 10 mm in size were used to explore the application in improving clay loam soil and as plant-growing media. Four sizes of CDW were mixed with clay loam soil in three mass proportions to plant 1-year-old Duranta repens seedlings with clay loam soil (C1) and 100% CDW fines (C2) as the controls. CDW fines application increased net carbon assimilation, leaf size, leaf nutrients, and plant growth with the best addition of 3–6 mm size and 35% mass proportion (T5) for clay loam. The branch number and leaf area in 3–6 mm group were 32.8% and 263.9% higher than those in C1, and 110.8% and 374.2% higher than those in C2. On average, the assimilation rate in T5 was 43.8% higher than that in the controls, while the respiration rate was 44.6% lower, indicating that plants in the T5 fixed more carbon. We suggest that CDW fines have the potential to be plant cultivation substrate and the addition ratio depends on the soil property. The topic of the research is whether better human capital, as determined by secondary school learning outcomes measured by PISA scores, promotes economic growth. The literature often uses the PISA results as a proxy for growth, while its use and impact on growth are not empirically proven. These questions are analyzed through two hypotheses. The first hypothesis (H1) states that in a worldwide sample of countries, GDP per capita growth between 2006 and 2019 was positively impacted by rising PISA results. The second hypothesis (H2) states that between 2006 and 2019, the rise in PISA scores in East Asia had a stronger influence on economic growth than in the rest of the world. The study examines 59 nations that have administered two PISA tests during the period of 2006–2019. The findings imply that there is generally no causal connection between PISA results and growth and the PISA results play no additional role in the development of East Asian nations. The results can be explained in two ways. The first is that human capital includes more than just skills. We build on dynamic capability (DC) theory and apply inductive case study research to shed light on how new venture manufacturing firms develop and nurture supply chain (SC) capabilities. Our findings discern SC capabilities related to dimensions of DCs (sense, integrate, develop, reconfigure) and show how these SC capabilities evolve throughout new venture life cycle stages. We find that SC capabilities steadily substitute improvisation and imitation. Our study also reveals that SC capabilities serve as dual-purpose capabilities with an operational as well as a dynamic role. On the one hand, they are needed to operate the supply chain and enable the development and reconfiguration of the internal resource base. On the other hand, they allow for the sensing and integration of external resources and create new or update and modify existing SC capabilities. Genetic improvement of local rabbit breeds using modern approaches such as marker-assisted selection requires accurate and precise information about marker‒trait associations in animals with different genetic backgrounds. Therefore, this study was designed to estimate the association between two mutations located in the Neuropeptide Y (NPY, g.1778G > C) and Phosphoglycerate Mutase 2 (PGAM2, c.195 C > T) genes in New Zealand White (NZW), Baladi (BR), and V-line rabbits. The first mutation was genotyped using high-resolution melting, and the second mutation was genotyped using the PCR-RFLP method. The results revealed significant associations between the NPY mutation and body weight at 10 (V-line) and 12 weeks of age (NZW, BR, and V-line), body weight gain (BWG) from 10 to 12 weeks of age (BR), BWG from 6 to 12 weeks of age (NZW, BR, and V-line), average daily gain (NZW, BR, and V-line, and BR), growth rate (GR) from 8 to10 weeks (V-line), 10 to 12 weeks (BR), and GR from 6 to 12 weeks of age (BR, and V-line). The PGAM2 mutation was associated with body weight at 10 (V-line) and 12 (NZW, and V-line) weeks of age, with significant positive additive effects at 12 weeks of age in all breeds, and was associated with BWG from 8 to 10 and 10 to 12 in BR, and BWG from 6 to 12 weeks of age (NZW, and BR), and average daily gain (NZW, and BR), and was associated with GR form 8 to 10 weeks (BR), from10 to 12 weeks (BR, and V-line) and from 6 to 12 weeks (BR). Polygonum minus Huds. has massive potential to be commercialized following many current discoveries of its medicinal properties. We investigated the growth and physiology changes of P. minus under different shading and treatment durations. The effects of four shading levels: 0% (T1), 30% (T2), 50% (T3) and 70% (T4) and two treatment durations of 10 weeks and 20 weeks were studied. Significant effects of shading levels and treatment durations were observed on the transpiration rate (E), leaf resistance, pigment content in leaves (Chl a, Chl b and Car), carbohydrate, ascorbic acid, total anthocyanin, phenolic and flavonoid contents. Enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase were also significantly affected by shading levels and treatment durations. The highest antioxidant activities were recorded under T4 of both treatment durations along with the high content of Chl a, Chl b and Car. The leaf, stem and root extracts of P. minus were also subjected to HPLC analysis for quantification of selected flavonoid compounds. This paper develops a Schumpeterian growth model with considering consumption and leisure externalities. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of patent protection policy on growth and inequality, as well as the interaction between policy effect and externalities. According to the log form utility function specification, this means that the elasticity of intertemporal substitution is unity. The following are the key findings of this paper. Patent protection policy encourages innovation and increases employment in the R&D industry, which enhances economic growth while increasing income inequality. In regard to externalities, an increase in the degree of consumption (leisure) externalities results in a higher (lower) growth rate and more (smaller) income inequality. When consumption (leisure) externality is greater intensity, the growth effect of patent protection policy becomes stronger (weaker), while its influence on expanding income inequality lessens (enhances). Finally, both the Pareto optimal patent protection policy and the optimal patent policy under the maximization of social welfare positively correlate with consumption externalities, but negatively correlate with leisure externalities. We investigated the relationship between employment growth and profitability and propose that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) hire employees, they experience an increase in profitability due to their acquisition of additional human capital. These benefits, however, are limited by the firm's ability to efficiently integrate the newly recruited employees and adjust its internal managerial practices and organization accordingly. Using a large sample of SMEs in the European Union, we examined the relationship between employment growth and profitability as a quadratic function with an inverted U shape. The empirical results strongly supported our prediction as we observed that profitability decreased when SMEs exceeded a 100% growth rate in employment. Importantly, we observed strong homogeneity in our results across various industries. This study was conducted to examine the influence of dietary supplementation of biological nano-selenium (BNSe) on productive performance, hematology, blood chemistry, antioxidant status, immune response, cecal microbiota, and carcass traits of quails. In total, 180 Japanese quails (1 week old) were randomly allocated into four groups, with five replicates of nine chicks each in a complete randomized design. The 1st group was fed a control diet without BNSe, and the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th treatments were fed diets supplemented with BNSe (0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 g /kg feed, respectively). The best level of BNSe in body weight (BW) and body weight gain (BWG) parameters was 0.4 g/kg diet. Feed conversion was improved (P < 0.01) by adding BNSe in quail feed compared with the basal diet without any supplementation. The inclusion of different BNSe levels (0.2, 0.4, 0.6 g/kg) exhibited an insignificant influence on all carcass traits. The dietary addition of BNSe (0.4 and 0.6 g/kg) significantly augmented aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity (P = 0.0127), total protein and globulin (P < 0.05), white blood cells (WBCs) (P = 0.031), and red blood cells (RBCs) (P = 0.0414) compared with the control. The dietary BNSe supplementation significantly improved lipid parameters, antioxidant and immunological indices, and increased selenium level in the blood (P < 0.05). BNSe significantly increased (P = 0.0003) lactic acid bacteria population number and lowered the total number of yeasts, molds, total bacterial count, E. coli, Coliform, Salmonella, and Enterobacter (P < 0.0001). In conclusion, adding BNSe up to 0.4 and 0.6 g/kg can boost the growth, lactic acid bacteria population number, hematology, immunological indices, antioxidant capacity, and lipid profile, as well as decline intestinal pathogens in growing quail. The nutritional requirement of fish larvae remains a limiting factor in advanced aquaculture. Micronutrients are crucial for early development, but their dietary inclusion level in the larval feed of carps has not been standardized. The present study was executed to determine the optimum dietary inclusion level of organic and inorganic selenium in the larval feed of Rohu, Labeo rohita. A 35-day feeding trial in triplicate under semi-control conditions was conducted in 21 troughs divided into seven groups. Each trough (capacity 4.0 L) contained 200 larvae (average body weight 0.4 mg). The first group (control) was reared on nano-particulate basal diet (CP 50%), while three groups Se-Na(0.5), Se-Na(1), and Se-Na(1.5) were fed basal diet supplemented with graded levels (0.5–1.5 mg/kg diet) of inorganic form of Se, sodium selenite (Se-Na). The last three groups (Se-Met(0.5), Se-Met(1), and Se-Met(1.5)) were fed organic form of dietary Se, selenium methionine (Se-Met) at the same inclusion level as Se-Na. Results indicated the curvilinear relationship of dietary Se levels with body weight, activity of digestive enzymes (protease, amylase, lipases, and trypsin), and antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, POD, and GSH-Px) activity, intestinal villi, width, and absorptive area. A positive correlation was observed with up to 0.5 and 1 mg/kg diet of Se-Na and Se-Met, respectively; however, above these levels, a negative impact was observed. The upregulation of growth hormone mediator (IGF-1) and downregulation of heat shock protein (HSP-70) also followed a similar trend in response to Se-Na and Se-Met inclusion. In the European Alps, mean temperature has risen by 2.5 K since the end of the nineteenth century. A 2 K warming of the growing season has taken place in the last 4 decades only. The 2.5 K warming should rise the position of the climatic treeline by about 400 m. Actual shifts in uppermost tree positions reported here for the Austrian Defereggen Valley and the Swiss Lower Engadine region of the Eastern Alps reach only around 140 m of elevation above the limit of old trees that date back to the nineteenth century. Uppermost Pinus cembra trees of > 2 m height currently occur at c. 2500 m, representing elevation records for the Eastern Alps. In situ temperature records for 2022–2023 revealed seasonal mean temperatures for uppermost trees that are 1–3 K higher than the equilibrium treeline isotherm of c. 6 °C in both regions (corrected for temperature anomalies from long-term records). The 2 K span reflects microhabitat differences and two ways to define the season. Thus, tree advances lag behind the upslope shift of the treeline isotherm, on average, by more than 200 m. The uppermost trees currently grow under quite warm conditions with annual shoot length increments frequently reaching 20 cm. Even without additional future warming, the new steady-state climatic treeline will exceed the Holocene maximum elevation in the Eastern Alps substantially. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper highlights how technology can contribute to reaching the 2015 Paris Agreement goals of net zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and global warming below 2°C in 2100. It uses the Advanced Climate Change Long-term model (ACCL), particularly adapted to quantify the consequences of energy price and technology shocks on CO2 emissions, temperature, climate damage and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The simulations show that without climate policies the warming may be +5°C in 2100, with considerable climate damage. An acceleration in 'usual' technical progress not targeted at reducing CO2- even worsens global warming and climate damage. According to our estimates, the world does not achieve climate goals in 2100 without 'green' technologies. Intervening only via energy prices, e.g. a carbon tax, requires challenging hypotheses of international coordination and price increase for polluting energies. We assess a multi-lever climate strategy combining energy efficiency gains, carbon sequestration, and a decrease of 3% per year in the relative price of 'clean' electricity with a 1 to 1.5% annual rise in the relative price of polluting energy sources. None of these components alone is sufficient to reach climate objectives. Our last and most important finding is that our composite scenario achieves the climate goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Interest is growing in the search for alternatives to traditional feed additives, so this study aimed to investigate the effect of adding zeolite to the concentrate diets of Awassi lambs with or without urea on growth performance, nutrient digestion, and health status. A total of 45 Awassi lambs similar in weight (24 ± 2 kg) and age (3 months ± 4 days) were divided into three groups: the first group (G1) fed on a concentrate diet supplemented with 1% urea; the second group (G2) fed on the concentrate diet supplemented with 1% urea and 3% zeolite, and the third group (G3) fed on a urea-free diet supplemented with 3% zeolite. Results: The results showed a significant increase (P ≤ 0.05) in final live weight, daily and total weight gain for group G2 compared to groups G1and G3, with a significant superiority (P ≤ 0.05) of group G3 over the control group G1. Significant improvement (P < 0.05) was also observed in feed consumption and feed conversion ratio in diets supplemented with zeolite for groups G2 and G3 compared to the control group G1. Additionally, there was a significant increase (P ≤ 0.05) in nutrient digestion and nutritional value in the diet of group G2 containing urea with added zeolite compared to groups G1 and G3. Zeolite did not affect the levels of glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, and albumin in the blood, but a significant increase (P ≤ 0.05) in total blood protein level and a significant decrease (P ≤ 0.05) in blood urea level were noted for groups G2 and G3 compared to the control group G1. Conclusions: Adding zeolite to urea-containing concentrate diets improved growth rates and nutrient digestion, of Awassi lambs. In diets without urea, zeolite improved growth rates without affecting nutrient digestion coefficients, in both types of diets, zeolite increased total protein levels and decreased blood urea levels, with all physiological indicators in lambs blood remaining within normal limits.
