Abstract

- An algorithm for calculating the radiation field of a charged point particle performing a spiral motion in an infinite cylindrical waveguide with a multilayer side wall is found. The number of layers and their filling is arbitrary. The axis of the spiral is aligned with the axis of the waveguide, so that the geometry of the problem has cylindrical symmetry. Explicit expressions for modal frequency distributions and equations for resonant frequencies for single-layer and double-layer waveguides are given. Examples of graphical constructions of modal frequency distributions of modes for single-layer (resistive), double-layer (metal-dielectric) and triple-layer (metal-dielectric with internal NEG coating) waveguides are presented., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We investigate the radiation of surface polaritons by an annular beam that coaxially encloses a cylindrical waveguide surrounded by a homogeneous medium. By using the Green dyadic, the electromagnetic potentials and the electric and magnetic fields are found inside and outside the waveguide. The expression for the energy losses is derived for the general case of the dispersion for dielectric permittivities inside and outside the cylinder. A comprehensive analysis is presented in the spectral range corresponding to the radiation of surface polaritons. The highest peaks in the spectral distribution are obtained for intermediate values of the beam velocity. In the limit of transparent medium the spectrum of radiated surface polaritons is discrete and the corresponding frequencies are determined by the eigenvalue equation for the cylindrical waveguide. 3. Exact correlation functions at finite temperatures in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with an open end

Abstract

The paradigmatic state of a 1D collective metal, the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), offers us an exact analytic solution for a strongly interacting quantum system not only for infinite systems at zero temperature but also at finite temperature and with a boundary. Potentially, these results are of high relevance for technology as they could lay the foundation for a many-body description of various nanostructures. For this to happen, we need expressions for local (i.e., spatially resolved) correlations as a function of frequency. In this study, we find such expressions and study their outcome. Based on our analytic expressions we are able to identify two distinct cases of TLL which we call Coulomb metal and Hund metal, respectively. We argue that these two cases span all the situations possible in nanotubes made out of p-block elements. From an applications viewpoint, it is crucial to capture the fact that the end of the 1D system can be coupled with the external environment and emit electrons into it. We discuss such coupling on two levels for both Coulomb and Hund metals: i) in the zeroth order approximation, the coupling modifies the 1D system's boundary conditions; ii) stronger coupling, when the environment can self-consistently modify the 1D system, we introduce spatially dependent TLL parameters. In case ii) we were able to capture the presence of plasmon-polariton particles, thus building a link between TLL and the field of nano-optics., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We argue that the Declarative Self-improving Python (DSPy) optimizers are a way to align the large language model (LLM) prompts and their evaluations to the human annotations. We present a comparative analysis of five teleprompter algorithms, namely, Cooperative Prompt Optimization (COPRO), Multi-Stage Instruction Prompt Optimization (MIPRO), BootstrapFewShot, BootstrapFewShot with Optuna, and K-Nearest Neighbor Few Shot, within the DSPy framework with respect to their ability to align with human evaluations. As a concrete example, we focus on optimizing the prompt to align hallucination detection (using LLM as a judge) to human annotated ground truth labels for a publicly available benchmark dataset. Our experiments demonstrate that optimized prompts can outperform various benchmark methods to detect hallucination, and certain telemprompters outperform the others in at least these experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 10 tables, two-column format

Abstract

Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) theory is a canonical formalism used to describe one-dimensional (1D) metals, where the low energy physics is determined by collective bosonic excitations. In this work, we present a theoretical model to compute the parameters of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) in multi-wall nanotubes (MWNTs). MWNTs introduce additional complexity to the usual fermionic chains due to interactions and hybridization between their multiple coaxial shells. We consider a model in which conducting paths along the length of the MWNTs are randomly distributed among the shells. Since the valley degree of freedom remains a good quantum number, the TLL description in addition to spin and charge, contains also valley degree of freedom, hence four mode description applies. The values of all four TLL parameters are obtained for this model. A surprising outcome is that the compressibility of the holon mode becomes a universal quantity, while the parameters of neutral modes will depend on the details of inter-shell coupling. Abstract

A new method is applied to construct an exact solution for the radiation field of a particle moving along an infinite helical trajectory. The solution is obtained in the form of a series expansion in cylindrical multipoles. The obtained solution is compared with the existing approximate solution and, using the derived exact relationships for the Doppler effect, is used to construct integral and angular characteristics of the radiation field. The possibility of a continuous transition from expressions for a helical trajectory of a particle to expressions describing the motion of a particle along a closed circle is shown. Optimization criteria are introduced and the possibility of optimizing the radiation characteristics by several parameters is considered.

Abstract

The results of studies on the properties of ordinary and heavy water subjected to sharp mechanical impacts at acoustic repetition frequency are presented. Experimental evidence for the phenomenon of acoustically induced nuclear processes in water is provided, supported by direct measurements of radiation emission and the formation of new elements, which cannot be explained by chemical reactions. The complex influence of mechanical oscillations on changes in the concentrations of stable isotopes of elements such as Ti, B, Na, Mg, and Li in water is demonstrated. The cause of surface erosion of metal structures during cavitation in water is explained through the formation of fluorine and the subsequent creation of aggressive HF acid molecules. Abstract

We introduce a framework where the announcements of a clearinghouse about the allocation process are opaque in the sense that there can be more than one outcome compatible with a realization of type reports. We ask whether desirable properties can be ensured under opacity in a robust sense. A property can be guaranteed under an opaque announcement if every mechanism compatible with it satisfies the property. We find an impossibility result: strategy-proofness cannot be guaranteed under any level of opacity. In contrast, in some environments, weak Maskin monotonicity and non-bossiness can be guaranteed under opacity.

Abstract

The browntrout Salmo trutta Linnaeus, 1758 is an important species for fisheries in Armenia,with a comparatively wide distribution in both wild habitats and aquaculture. Despite its significance and widespread presence, there is limited information regarding diseases and parasites affecting brown trout in Armenia. The aim of this study was to examine theparasite fauna of brown trout in the southern part of Armenia. The research was conducted in the Vayots Dzor Region, as well as at the Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology, and Armenian National Agrarian University. Captured fish were examined using themethodof complete parasitological research. Parasites were analyzed undermicroscope and identified using specialized manuals based on their morphological features. A total of 20brown trout were captured between September and December 2023. Of these, 8 individuals (40%) were (40%) were infected with parasites. Six species of parasites were identified: Dactylogyrus vastator Nybelin, 1924 (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae),Gyrodactylussp. (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae),Bunodera luciopercaeMüller, 1776 (Trematoda: Allocreadiidae),Proteocephalus longicollis Zeder, 1800 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae),Khawia armeniaca Cholodkovsky, 1915 (Cestoda: Lytocestidae),and Ichthyophthirius multifiliis Fouquet, 1876 (Ciliata: Ichthyophthiriidae). Parasite infections were generally characterized by low intensity, except forI. multifiliis. Gyrodactylus sp.and B. luciopercaehelminths were detected for the first time in Armenia. This pilot study provides baseline information for further large-scale investigations and offers a valuable insightforfarmers to better understand thechallenges associated with efficient production.

16. Lack of Knowledge of Antibiotic Risks Contributes to Primary Care Patients' Expectations of Antibiotics for Common Symptoms

Abstract

Patient expectations of receiving antibiotics for common symptoms can trigger unnecessary use. We conducted a survey (n = 564) between January 2020 to June 2021 in public and private primary care clinics in Texas to study the prevalence and predictors of patients' antibiotic expectations for common symptoms/illnesses. We surveyed Black patients (33%) and Hispanic/Latine patients (47%), and over 93% expected to receive an antibiotic for at least 1 of the 5 pre-defined symptoms/illnesses. Public clinic patients were nearly twice as likely to expect antibiotics for sore throat, diarrhea, and cold/flu than private clinic patients. Lack of knowledge of potential risks of antibiotic use was associated with increased antibiotic expectations for diarrhea (odds ratio [OR] = 1.6; 95% CI, 1.1-2.4) and cold/flu symptoms (OR = 2.9; 95% CI, 2.0-4.4). Lower education and inadequate health literacy were predictors of antibiotic expectations for diarrhea. Future antibiotic stewardship interventions should tailor patient education materials to include information on antibiotic risks and guidance on appropriate antibiotic indications. Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Despite numerous investigations into the impact of drugs/probiotics on the gut microbiota composition in Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) patients, the question as to whether there exists a significant bacterial diversity(ies) independent of the placebo effect that can be reliably considered in clinical and nutritional trials remains unresolved. METHODS: This study represents the in augural analysis of the placebos influence on the gut microbiota of both healthy individuals and FMF afflicted men, utilizing previously collected data from PhyloChip™ DNA microarray experiments. A total of 15 healthy and 15 FMF male volunteers, aged 18 to 50, participated in this partially randomized placebo trial, which is accessible through the GEO Series accession number GSE111835. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Key findings from current investigations include i. the anticipated divergence in gut bacteria resistance to placebo between healthy and FMF individuals, ii. the minor impact of placebo on gut bacterial diversities in healthy individuals, with Enterobacteriaceae diversities identified as placebo-resistant among healthy gut bacteria, and iii. the comprehensive influence of placebo on all bacterial phyla in the gut microbiome of FMF patients, extending to nearly all bacterial genera, except for the resilience of gut Akkermansia muciniphila spp. to placebo in FMF patients. This study underscores the susceptibility of Faecalibacterium, Blautia, and Clostridium genera to placebo. Consequently, this investigation holds significance for the proper design of placebo-controlled trials and establishes a foundation for further exploration of the gut-brain axis. Furthermore, it contributes valuable insights to discussions regarding proposals for probiotic therapies, particularly focusing on Faecalibacterium spp., Blautia spp., and Clostridium spp.

Abstract

We investigate the Cherenkov radiation by a charge uniformly moving inside a dielectric cylindrical channel in a homogeneous medium. The expressions for the Fourier components of the electric and magnetic fields are derived by using the electromagnetic field Green tensor. The spectral distribution of the Cherenkov radiation intensity in the exterior medium is studied for the general case of frequency dispersion of the interior and exterior dielectric functions. It is shown that, under certain conditions on the dielectric permittivities, strong narrow peaks appear in the spectral distribution. Abstract

The fusion of non-Abelian anyons or topological defects is a fundamental operation in measurement-only topological quantum computation. In topological superconductors, this operation amounts to a determination of the shared fermion parity of Majorana zero modes. As a step towards this, we implement a single-shot interferometric measurement of fermion parity in indium arsenide-aluminum heterostructures with a gate-defined nanowire. The interferometer is formed by tunnel-coupling the proximitized nanowire to quantum dots. The nanowire causes a state-dependent shift of these quantum dots' quantum capacitance of up to 1 fF. Our quantum capacitance measurements show flux h/2e-periodic bimodality with a signal-to-noise ratio of 1 in 3.7 $\mu$s at optimal flux values. From the time traces of the quantum capacitance measurements, we extract a dwell time in the two associated states that is longer than 1 ms at in-plane magnetic fields of approximately 2 T. These results are consistent with a measurement of the fermion parity encoded in a pair of Majorana zero modes that are separated by approximately 3 $\mu$m and subjected to a low rate of poisoning by non-equilibrium quasiparticles. Abstract

The research aimed to identify and evaluate the risks associated with IT projects, particularly focusing on their impacts. Despite numerous efforts, a significant number of software projects still fail to achieve success; however, these risks can be effectively managed. This study outlines methodologies for examining how different risks influence software projects, using statistical analyses and models to uncover causal relationships. A survey was also conducted to assess critical risk factors, highlighting three key factors that have the greatest influence. The findings suggest that addressing these factors can improve decision-making, thereby increasing the likelihood of project success

Abstract

Recent technological advances allow fabricating ultraclean two-dimensional electronic systems where the electron mean free path due to static disorder and phonons is much larger compared to the conducting channel width. It makes possible to realize novel, ballistic and hydrodynamic, regimes of electron transport resulting in drastic modifications of the normal Hall effect. Here we develop a theory of anomalous Hall effect -- generation of the electric field transverse to the flowing current unrelated to the Lorentz force action -- in ultraclean channels with two-dimensional electron gas and demonstrate that both in ballistic and hydrodynamic regimes the anomalous Hall effect, similarly to the normal one, strongly differs from that in the standard diffusive case. We take into account all relevant contributions to the anomalous Hall electric field and Hall voltage: the skew scattering of electrons, side-jump, and anomalous velocity effects that appear as a result of the spin-orbit coupling. We study both ballistic and hydrodynamic transport regimes which are realized depending on the relation between the electron-electron mean free path and the channel width. The role of electron-electron interactions is analyzed. Compact analytical expressions for the anomalous Hall field and voltage are derived. Possible experimental scenarios for observation of the anomalous Hall effect in ultraclean channels are briefly discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

In this work, we have abstractly generalized the similarity law for multidimensional vectors. Initially, the law of similarity was derived for one-dimensional vectors. Although it operated with such values of the ratio of parts of the whole, it meant linear dimensions (a line is one-dimensionality). The concept of the general golden ratio (GGR) for the vectors in the multidimensional space is presented and described in detail with equations and solutions. It shown that the GGR depends on the angles. Main properties of the GGR are given with illustrative examples. We introduce and discuss the concept of the similar vectors and the set of similarities for a given vector. Also, we present our vision on the theory of the golden ratio for triangles and describe the similar triangles with examples., Comment: 21 pages, 26 figures

42. Towards Greener Data Centers via Programmable Data Plane

Abstract

The energy demands of data centers are increasing and are expected to grow exponentially. Reducing the energy consumption of data centers decreases operational expenses, as well as their carbon footprint. We design techniques to reduce data center power consumption by leveraging Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and programmable data plane concepts. Relying solely on in-data plane registers, our proposed system P4Green consolidates traffic in the least number of network switches and shifts workloads to the servers with the available renewable energy. Unlike existing SDN-based solutions, P4Green's operation does not depend on a centralized controller, making the system scalable and failure-resistant. Our proof-of-concept simulations show that traffic consolidation can reduce data centers' aggregation switch usage by 36% compared to standard data center load balancing techniques, while workload control can boost renewable energy consumption for 46% of the daily traffic.

Abstract

We call an element $U$ conditionally universal for a sequential convergence space $\mathbf{\Omega}$ with respect to a minimal system $\{\varphi_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$ in a continuously and densely embedded Banach space $\mathcal{X}\hookrightarrow\mathbf{\Omega}$ if the partial sums of its phase-modified Fourier series is dense in $\mathbf{\Omega}$. We will call the element $U$ almost universal if the change of phases (signs) needs to be performed only on a thin subset of Fourier coefficients. In this paper we prove the existence of an almost universal element under certain assumptions on the system $\{\varphi_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$. We will call a function $U$ asymptotically conditionally universal in a space $L^1(\mathcal{M})$ if the partial sums of its phase-modified Fourier series is dense in $L^1(F_m)$ for an ever-growing sequence of subsets $F_m\subset\mathcal{M}$ with asymptotically null complement. Here we prove the existence of such functions $U$ under certain assumptions on the system $\{\varphi_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$. Moreover, we show that every integrable function can be slightly modified to yield such a function $U$. In particular, we establish the existence of almost universal functions for $L^p([0,1])$, $p\in(0,1)$, and asymptotically conditionally universal functions for $L^1([0,1])$, with respect to the trigonometric system.

Abstract

Abstract The production cross sections of D0, D+, and Λ c + $$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ hadrons originating from beauty-hadron decays (i.e. non-prompt) were measured for the first time at midrapidity in proton–lead (p–Pb) collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV. Nuclear modification factors (R pPb) of non-prompt D0, D+, and Λ c + $$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ are calculated as a function of the transverse momentum (p T) to investigate the modification of the momentum spectra measured in p–Pb collisions with respect to those measured in proton–proton (pp) collisions at the same energy. The R pPb measurements are compatible with unity and with the measurements in the prompt charm sector, and do not show a significant p T dependence. The p T-integrated cross sections and p T-integrated R pPb of non-prompt D0 and D+ mesons are also computed by extrapolating the visible cross sections down to p T = 0. The non-prompt D-meson R pPb integrated over p T is compatible with unity and with model calculations implementing modification of the parton distribution functions of nucleons bound in nuclei with respect to free nucleons. The non-prompt Λ c + $$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ /D0 and D+ /D0 production ratios are computed to investigate hadronisation mechanisms of beauty quarks into mesons and baryons. The measured ratios as a function of p T display a similar trend to that measured for charm hadrons in the same collision system.

Abstract

Background: The percentage of clean-wound infection remains fairly high so far: 2% to 5%. Therefore, monitoring wound healing is a critical task in modern surgery.Objective: To develop and test a dressing material with halochromic dye in order to determine the suppuration of a clean wound of the skin and soft tissues.Material and methods: The experiment was conducted on 30 Wistar rats: clean wounds were formed and then covered with a dressing soaked in halochromic dye. During the experiment, we measured the pH of the wounds and wound area and determined the qualitative and quantitative composition of the wound microflora. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon test; the level of significance was taken at 0.05.Results: We found that the initial wound area was 253 (248; 257) mm2 and the surface pH, 5.80 (5.55; 5.90). Clean wounds covered with a dressing material were not treated with medication. It led to their infection and a change in the color of the dressing material on average on day 4 (4; 5) of the experiment. After removal of the dressing material, we noted that the pH of the wounds was 7.79 (7.68; 7.88) and the wound area, 238 (234.3; 242.5) mm2; the differences compared with the data on day 1 were statistically significant. When analyzing the degree of wound contamination after removal of the dressing material, we found that the wound contained aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms and microscopic fungi, the level of which statistically significantly exceeded the maximum permissible level, confirming development of the wound infection.Conclusions: The use of a dressing material with halochromic dye, which changes its color in response to the pH of the wound, facilitates timely detection of the development of the wound infection.

Abstract

Abstract The p T-differential production cross sections of non-prompt D0, D+, and D s + $$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ mesons originating from beauty-hadron decays are measured in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV. The measurements are performed at midrapidity, |y| < 0.5, with the data sample collected by ALICE from 2016 to 2018. The results are in agreement with predictions from several perturbative QCD calculations. The fragmentation fraction of beauty quarks to strange mesons divided by the one to non-strange mesons, f s /(f u + f d), is found to be 0.114 ± 0.016 (stat.) ± 0.006 (syst.) ± 0.003 (BR) ± 0.003 (extrap.). This value is compatible with previous measurements at lower centre-of-mass energies and in different collision systems in agreement with the assumption of universality of fragmentation functions. In addition, the dependence of the non-prompt D meson production on the centre-of-mass energy is investigated by comparing the results obtained at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV, showing a hardening of the non-prompt D-meson p T-differential production cross section at higher s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ . Finally, the b b ¯ $$ \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $$ production cross section per unit of rapidity at midrapidity is calculated from the non-prompt D0, D+, D s + $$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ , and Λ c + $$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ hadron measurements, obtaining d σ / d y = 75.2 ± 3.2 stat . ± 5.2 syst . − 3.2 + 12.3 extrap . $$ \textrm{d}\sigma /\textrm{d}y=75.2\pm 3.2\left(\textrm{stat}.\right)\pm 5.2{\left(\textrm{syst}.\right)}_{-3.2}^{+12.3}\left(\textrm{extrap}.\right) $$ μb.

Abstract

Abstract The first measurement of the multiplicity dependence of intra-jet properties of leading charged-particle jets in proton–proton (pp) collisions is reported. The mean charged-particle multiplicity and jet fragmentation distributions are measured in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions at center-of-mass energy $$\sqrt{s}$$ s = 13 TeV using the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles produced in the midrapidity region ( $$|\eta | < 0.9$$ | η | < 0.9 ) using the sequential recombination anti- $$k_{\textrm{T}}$$ k T algorithm with jet resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 for the transverse momentum ( $$p_\textrm{T}$$ p T ) interval 5–110 GeV/c. The high-multiplicity events are selected by the forward V0 scintillator detectors. The mean charged-particle multiplicity inside the leading jet cone rises monotonically with increasing jet $$p_\textrm{T}$$ p T in qualitative agreement with previous measurements at lower energies. The distributions of jet fragmentation function variables $$z^{\textrm{ch}}$$ z ch and $$\xi ^{\textrm{ch}}$$ ξ ch are measured for different jet- $$p_\textrm{T}$$ p T intervals. Jet- $$p_\textrm{T}$$ p T independent fragmentation of leading jets is observed for wider jets except at high- and low- $$z^{\textrm{ch}}$$ z ch values. The observed “hump-backed plateau” structure in the $$\xi ^{\textrm{ch}}$$ ξ ch distribution indicates suppression of low- $$p_\textrm{T}$$ p T particles. In high-multiplicity events, an enhancement of the fragmentation probability of low- $$z^{\textrm{ch}}$$ z ch particles accompanied by a suppression of high- $$z^{\textrm{ch}}$$ z ch particles is observed compared to minimum-bias events. This behavior becomes more prominent for low- $$p_\textrm{T}$$ p T jets with larger jet radius. The results are compared with predictions of QCD-inspired event generators, PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC. It is found that PYTHIA 8 qualitatively reproduces the jet modification in high-multiplicity events except at high jet $$p_\textrm{T}$$ p T . These measurements provide important constraints to models of jet fragmentation.

Abstract

Abstract A study of strange hadron production associated with hard scattering processes and with the underlying event is conducted to investigate the origin of the enhanced production of strange hadrons in small collision systems characterised by large charged-particle multiplicities. For this purpose, the production of the single-strange meson K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ and the double-strange baryon Ξ ± is measured, in each event, in the azimuthal direction of the highest-p T particle (“trigger” particle), related to hard scattering processes, and in the direction transverse to it in azimuth, associated with the underlying event, in pp collisions at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 5.02 TeV and s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The per-trigger yields of K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ and Ξ ± are dominated by the transverse-to-leading production (i.e., in the direction transverse to the trigger particle), whose contribution relative to the toward-leading production is observed to increase with the event charged-particle multiplicity. The transverse-to-leading and the toward-leading Ξ ± / K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ yield ratios increase with the multiplicity of charged particles, suggesting that strangeness enhancement with multiplicity is associated with both hard scattering processes and the underlying event. The relative production of Ξ ± with respect to K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ is higher in transverse-to-leading processes over the whole multiplicity interval covered by the measurement. The K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ and Ξ ± per-trigger yields and yield ratios are compared with predictions of three different phenomenological models, namely Pythia8.2 with the Monash tune, Pythia8.2 with ropes and EPOS LHC. The comparison shows that none of them can quantitatively describe either the transverse-to-leading or the toward-leading yields of K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ and Ξ ± .

Abstract

Abstract The angular correlations between charged Ξ baryons and associated identified hadrons (pions, kaons, protons, Λ baryons, and Ξ baryons) are measured in pp collisions at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector to give insight into the particle production mechanisms and balancing of quantum numbers on the microscopic level. In particular, the distribution of strangeness is investigated in the correlations between the doubly-strange Ξ baryon and mesons and baryons that contain a single strange quark, K and Λ. As a reference, the results are compared to Ξπ and Ξp correlations, where the associated mesons and baryons do not contain a strange valence quark. These measurements are expected to be sensitive to whether strangeness is produced through string breaking or in a thermal production scenario. Furthermore, the multiplicity dependence of the correlation functions is measured to look for the turn-on of additional particle production mechanisms with event activity. The results are compared to predictions from the string-breaking model Pythia 8, including tunes with baryon junctions and rope hadronisation enabled, the cluster hadronisation model Herwig 7, and the core-corona model Epos-lhc. While some aspects of the experimental data are described quantitatively or qualitatively by the Monte Carlo models, no model can match all features of the data. These results provide stringent constraints on the strangeness and baryon number production mechanisms in pp collisions.

Abstract

Purpose of the study was to compare of the average long-term results of classical prostate enucleation using the Millin method and enucleation performed using a holmium laser (HoLEP).Patients and methods. This study, conducted on the basis of the Endocrinology Research Center of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, included 100 patients operated on for obstruction of the prostatic part of the urethra over the period 2020–2023. The main indication for surgery was benign prostatic hyperplasia. The selection criterion for patients was a prostate volume of more than 80 cm3. The patients were divided into 2 groups depending on the intervention performed: in the 1st group Millin surgery was performed (n = 50), in group 2n laser enucleation of the prostate was done (n = 50). The data obtained during the operation in the early postoperative period, as well as the results of postoperative follow-up of patients were analyzed.Results. In the mid-term period, 4–6 months after surgery, patients from both groups were observed to improve their condition and reduce complaints of dysuric phenomena. The results were obtained illustrating a shorter inpatient stay for patients who underwent HoLEP (4.3 ± 0.6 days versus 10.0 ± 2.4 during Millin surgery), which is correspondingly associated with a faster recovery after this intervention compared with the classic one. A statistically significant (p-value < 0.05) problem of patients from the HoLEP group was urethral stricture, which occurred in 6 % of the subjects from this group and did not occur in the Millin surgery group. In fact, scarring of the bladder neck was more commonly obserbed (10 % vs. 8 %) in the Millin surgery group. However, these complications were not more than 10 %. As a result of the study, there was no statistically significant effect of using HoLEP on erectile dysfunction in patients, which suggests the potential of this technique for a lower incidence of worsening erectile dysfunction compared with open intervention.Conclusions. HoLEP is a safe method of prostate enucleation, applicable for its large volume, in particular, up to 80 cm3. This procedure is an alternative to classical open surgery, and can be recommended for patients with polymorbidity to reduce the risk of perioperative complications and reduce rehabilitation time. Millin surgery is also a reliable treatment method with high sensitivity to the detection of cellular atypia and a large volume of cytoreduction. The decision on the surgical procedure used must be made individually for each patient.
