Abstract

Actions that transform our energy system are the cornerstone of decarbonizing our economy but have been hindered by the ineffective interface between researchers and decision-makers in Canada. This paper begins by arguing for a more holistic perspective on energy system decarbonization modelling and exploring how insights can aid evidence-based decision making. We then respond with the development of a modelling platform that includes three core pillars: (1) a toolbox of models that together represent the integrated energy system, (2) a dataset containing the inputs required to populate those models, and (3) a visualization suite to analyze and communicate their outputs. The Spine Toolbox is leveraged to process these three components in an efficient workflow. Taken together, the platform promotes the usability of model results by fostering consistency, transparency, and timeliness. Furthermore, the epistemic limitations of energy systems modelling and implications for platform and model design, and engaging extended peer communities, are discussed. Our hope is that this platform can be a foundational resource that facilitates collaboration between energy system and decarbonization researchers, modelling teams and decision-makers, ultimately enabling the effective application of evidence-based policy.

Hintergrund: Cyclodextrine haben die Fähigkeit, zelluläre Lipide zu mobilisieren und werden daher als neuer Therapieansatz der autosomal rezessiven Niemann-Pick TypC Erkrankung (NPC) im Rahmen von Studien überprüft. NPC ist eine seltene Erkrankung (Inzidenz 1:120.000-1:150.000) des Lipidstoffwechsels, die durch endolysosomale Akkumulation von Cholesterin gekennzeichnet ist. Im Verlauf der Erkrankung kommt es zur progressiven Neurodegeneration. Bei NPC1 Mäusen und Katzen verlangsamte die Therapie mit Kleptose HPB das Fortschreiten der Erkrankung und verlängerte die Lebensdauer, führte aber zu einem signifikanten Hörverlust.Material und Methoden: Im Rahmen der von Vtesse geförderten Phase 2b/3 von VTS-270 (2-Hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin) wird unter der zweiwöchentlichen intrathekalen Verabreichung von VTS-270 an drei NPC-erkrankten Probanden das Hörvermögen durch eine umfassende Audiometrie einschließlich Reintonaudiometrie, DPOAE-Messung, überschwelliger BERA sowie Sprachaudiometrie verlaufskontrolliert.Ergebnisse: Unter der Therapie mit VTS-270 zeigt sich ein progredienter sensorineuraler Hörverlust ab 2 kHz. Die erhöhten Schwellenwerte gingen mit einer Eliminierung der DPOAE einher. Bei einem Probanden zeigte sich nach der Verabreichung ein akuter pantonaler, hochtonbetonter Hörverlust, der sich nach Therapiepause und Dosisreduzierung im Tieftonbereich wieder regenerierte.Diskussion: Sowohl die Manifestation der NPC-Krankheit als auch die Therapie mit VTS-270 führen zu einem hochfrequenten Hörverlust. Bei NPC-Patienten ist eine retrocochleäre Schwerhörigkeit häufig, die Hörverluste unter der Therapie gehen hingegen mit einer Eliminierung der DPOAE einher. Dies deutet auf einen Funktionsverlust der äußeren Haarzellen, der sich jedoch teilweise regenerierbar zeigt. Die Ergebnisse weisen zudem auf eine individuelle dosisabhängige Schädigung der äußeren Haarzellen.Fazit: VTS-270 wird derzeit in Studien für die Behandlung von NPC-Typ C getestet. Abstract

What the reader is about to leaf through is one of the most important and widespread international relations manuals in the United States, the birthplace of the discipline as it has developed since the Second World War. In this manual we can well assert that today we find the new mainstream of the discipline, enriched by the results of a debate that has lost much of the fury that had characterized it in the final decades of the last century and which has progressively opened up to the stimuli provided by the more recent and, in some respects, even revolutionary. Precisely the richness of the comparison, on the one hand, and the ability to orient it constructively, on the other, have made it possible to reach a result in which it is possible to draw a balance that is as shared as possible of the object, methodology and research programs of international relations. For the student, as well as for the neophyte of the discipline or for those who are simply intrigued by the political study of international reality, this manual offers a certainly peculiar approach. What presents itself to our eyes is a book conceived in every way to answer questions about international politics. It is an easy-to-access volume which, rather than proposing a systematic organization of disciplinaryly consolidated knowledge right from the start, opts for a spiral mechanism, a real "endless screw" that leads the reader towards increasingly in-depth knowledge of the dynamics of international politics, the regularities that govern them and the ways to frame, interpret and explain them.

Abstract

The NATO N4 corpus contains speech collected at naval training schools within several NATO countries. The speech utterances comprising the corpus are short, tactical transmissions typical of NATO naval communications. In this paper, we report the results of some preliminary speaker recognition experiments on the N4 corpus. We compare the performance of three speaker recognition systems developed at TNO Human Factors, the US Air Force Research Laboratory, Information Directorate and MIT Lincoln Laboratory on the segment of N4 data collected in the Netherlands. Performance is reported as a function of both training and test data duration. We also investigate the impact of cross-language training and testing.

Abstract

This project describes the composition and goals of the Multi-session Audio Research Project (MARP) corpus and some initial experimental findings. The MARP corpus is a three year longitudinal collection of 21 sessions and more than 60 participants. This study was undertaken to test the impact of various factors on speaker recognition, such as inter-session variability, intonation, aging, whispering and text dependency. Initial results demonstrate the impact of sentence intonation, whispering, text dependency and cross session tests. These results highlight the sensitivity of speaker recognition to vocal, environmental and phonetic conditions that are commonly encountered but rarely explored or tested., Prepared in cooperation with CRSS: Center for Robust Speech Systems, University of Texas at Dallas, Richardson, TX. Abstract

To control an intelligent knee prosthesis for above-knee amputees, an algorithm is developed to detect gait events directly from accelerometer signals captured on the prosthesis. Using this technique, several events are automatically detected along the gait cycle. The simplicity and effectiveness of the technique is demonstrated, showing automated adaptability even for amplitude and frequency variations in gait pattern, while solving problems inherent to calibration such as offsets and scale factors. Abstract Background Current efforts are underway to quantify the chemical concentration in a treated air space that elicits a spatial repellent (deterrent) response in a vector population. Such information will facilitate identifying the optimum active ingredient (AI) dosage and intervention coverage important for the development of spatial repellent tools – one of several novel strategies being evaluated for vector-borne disease control. This study reports initial findings from air sampling experiments conducted under field conditions to describe the relationship between air concentrations of repellent AIs and deterrent behavior in the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti. Methods Air samples were taken inside and outdoors of experimental huts located in Pu Tuey Village, Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand in conjunction with mosquito behavioral evaluations. A mark-release-recapture study design using interception traps was used to measure deterrency of Ae. aegypti against 0.00625% metofluthrin coils and DDT-treated fabric (2g/m2) within separate experimental trials. Sentinel mosquito cohorts were positioned adjacent to air sampling locations to monitor knock down responses to AI within the treated air space. Air samples were analyzed using two techniques: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Compendium Method TO-10A and thermal desorption (TD). Results Both the USEPA TO-10A and TD air sampling methods were able to detect and quantify volatized AIs under field conditions. Air samples indicated concentrations of both repellent chemicals below thresholds required for toxic responses (mortality) in mosquitoes. These concentrations elicited up to a 58% and 70% reduction in Ae. aegypti entry (i.e., deterrency) into treated experimental huts using metofluthrin coils and DDT-treated fabric, respectively. Minimal knock down was observed in sentinel mosquito cohorts positioned adjacent to air sampling locations during both chemical evaluations. Conclusions This study is the first to describe two air sampling methodologies that are appropriate for detecting and quantifying repellent chemicals within a treated air space during mosquito behavior evaluations. Results demonstrate that the quantity of AI detected by the mosquito vector, Ae. aegypti, that elicits repellency is far lower than that needed for toxicity. These findings have important implications for evaluation and optimization of new vector control tools that function through mosquito behavior modification as opposed to mortality.

Abstract Background A survey of adult anopheline mosquito diversities, collected from September 2009 to August 2010, was conducted in a malaria endemic area of western Thailand. Two anopheline species complexes, Dirus and Minimus, along with the Maculatus group were observed. Of several species documented from within each complex and group, four important malaria vectors were identified, including An. dirus, An. baimaii, An. minimus, and An. sawadwongporni. Information on biting activity and host preference for any single species within the Dirus complex has never been assessed. Using specific molecular identification assays, the trophic behavior and biting activity of each sibling species within the Dirus complex were observed and analyzed for the Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand. Methods Adult female mosquitoes were collected for two consecutive nights each month during a one year period. Three collection methods, human landing indoor (HLI), human landing outdoor (HLO), and cattle baited collections (CBC) were applied. Each team of collectors captured mosquitoes between 1800 and 0600 h. Results From a total of 9,824 specimens, 656 belong to the Dirus complex (An. dirus 6.09% and An. baimaii 0.59%), 8,802 to the Minimus complex (An. minimus 4.95% and An. harrisoni 84.65%) and 366 to the Maculatus group (An. maculatus 2.43% and An. sawadwongporni 1.29%). Both An. dirus and An. baimaii demonstrated exophagic and zoophilic behaviors. Significantly greater numbers of An. dirus and An. baimaii were collected from cattle as compared to humans (P = 0.003 for An. dirus and P = 0.048 for An. baimaii). Abstract International public health workers are challenged by a burden of arthropod-borne disease that remains elevated despite best efforts in control programmes. With this challenge comes the opportunity to develop novel vector control paradigms to guide product development and programme implementation. The role of vector behaviour modification in disease control was first highlighted several decades ago but has received limited attention within the public health community. This paper presents current evidence highlighting the value of sub-lethal agents, specifically spatial repellents, and their use in global health, and identifies the primary challenges towards establishing a clearly defined and recommended role for spatial repellent products in disease control.

Abstract

Abstract Background Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) genotype V reemerged in Asia (China) in 2009 after a 57-year hiatus from the continent, thereby emphasizing a need to increase regional surveillance efforts. Genotypic characterization was performed on 19 JEV-positive mosquito pools (18 pools of Culex tritaeniorhynchus and 1 pool of Cx. bitaeniorhynchus) from a total of 64 positive pools collected from geographically different locations throughout the Republic of Korea (ROK) during 2008 and 2010. Findings Two regions of the JEV genome were sequenced from 19 pools; the envelope gene and the nonstructural protein 5 (NS5)/3'-untranslated region (UTR). Eighteen pools of Culex tritaeniorhynchus and one pool of Cx. bitaeniorhynchus were positive for genotype I and genotype V, respectively. Sequence alignment of the complete E gene from Cx. bitaeniorhynchus showed high amino acid similarity (98.8%) to the Muar strain, characterized as the first report of genotype V, isolated from an encephalitis patient in Malaysia in 1952. Conclusion This study represents the first report of JEV genotype V in the ROK. The reemergence of genotype V in Asia (China and ROK) after more than a half-century and its discovery in Cx. bitaeniorhynchus, a mosquito species previously unknown to carry JEV in the ROK, emphasizes the need for enhanced JE surveillance to monitor the dynamics of JEV strains within the region. Future findings may have implications with regard to JEV vaccination/prevention strategies.
