Based on fieldwork in a city in central China, a study shows that, with an aggressive implementation of privatization schemes, labor struggles have emerged in which moral economy demands are increasingly permeated by 'class consciousness'. Privatization activates workers' 'class consciousness', an idea that has become embedded in their minds through several decades' immersion in socialist ideology.

Empresa Colombiana de Petroleos S.A. (Ecopetrol) and the labor union USO are negotiating over pay and privatization issues following a nationwide general strike in February 1997. USO is seeking a 30% pay raise and fighting Ecopetrol's use of private contractors. The union also opposes the state-owned company's plan to establish a private firm, Ecogas, to deal with combustible gas. USO members are staging a work slowdown during the negotiations.
