Abstract

We report on an hybrid in-beam PET and prompt-gamma Compton imaging system aimed at quasi real-time ion-range verification in proton-therapy treatments. Proof-of-concept experiments were carried out at the radiobiology beam line of the CNA cyclotron facility using a set of two synchronous Compton imagers and different target materials. The time structure of the 18~MeV proton beam was shaped with a series of beam-on and beam-off intervals, thereby mimicking a pulsed proton beam on a long time scale. During beam-on intervals, Compton imaging was performed utilizing the high energy $\gamma$-rays promptly emitted from the nuclear reactions occurring in the targets. In the course of the beam-off intervals in-situ positron-emission tomography was accomplished with the same imagers using the $\beta^{+}$ decay of activated nuclei. The targets used were stacks of different materials covering also various proton ranges and energies. A systematic study on the performance of these two complementary imaging techniques is reported and the experimental results interpreted on the basis of Monte Carlo calculations. The results demonstrate the possibility to combine both imaging techniques in a concomitant way, where high-efficiency prompt-gamma imaging is complemented with the high spatial accuracy of PET. Empowered by these results we suggest that a pulsed beam with a suitable duty cycle, in conjunction with in-situ Compton- and PET-imaging may help to attain complementary information and quasi real-time range monitoring with high accuracy.

5. Collaboration before Writing: Exploring How Student Talk Contributes to English L2 Written Narratives

Abstract

Previous studies of prewriting discussions have focused narrowly on classifying the type of student talk e.g., content, organization, language) that occurred during a short planning period. However, less is known about how students' interactions unfold across multiple prewriting discussions in an entire lesson. To gain further insight into the relationship between collaborative talk and individual writing, this case study explores how two ESL students, Lendina and Mateo, interact during three prewriting activities in one lesson. Data sources include transcripts of the students' discussions, their narrative texts, and perceptions from the students, their teacher, and an observer. Findings revealed that their discussions were characterized by collaboration (e.g., equality, mutuality, and shared epistemic stance), with each activity contributing concepts and lexical expressions to the students' narratives. Implications for instructors interested in integrating prewriting discussions into their classes are provided.

Abstract

Following the recommendations of the European research institutions, research should be considered as a complete cycle that includes the impact of results on society, economy, business opportunities, creativity, innovation, the use of resources, end-users, local or global development, the environment, etc., and it is in these aspects that the inclusion of gender considerations brings quality to research. The analysis about the different needs, attitudes and preferences of both genders increases the social relevance and quality of scientific development reached. The Commission for Women and Science already pointed out in 2015 and 2018 the need to receive training for the adequate inclusion of gender issues in research contents. In this way, the available materials such as tools for that purpose were revised and the delivery of a specific in-house CSIC training course was promoted. In general, there is great difficulty (and also some resistance) in applying the gender dimension in research content. The Commission for Women and Science presents this informal guide to help applicants to complete gender mainstreaming issues in contents, for both national and European calls, contributing to the objectives of the 3rd Equality Plan (AXIS 7) and CSIC’S HRS4R (Action 17) strategy.

33. Plan de recuperación muscular para corredores populares de larga distancia

Abstract

Introducción: El descanso es un factor muy importante dentro del entrenamiento y que no siempre se toma en cuenta como se debería. Para llevar a cabo una buena recuperación existen diferentes métodos, entre los que se encuentran el foam rolling, la crioterapia, la presoterapia y la recuperación activa. Estos métodos tienen como beneficios una mejora de la recuperación muscular, reducción del dolor muscular, mejora de la circulación sanguínea, etc. que influyen en la disminución del número de lesiones y en una mejora del rendimiento. Objetivo: El objetivo de esta propuesta es realizar un plan de recuperación muscular dentro de una planificación de tres meses de entrenamientos para corredores populares de larga distancia, y analizar los resultados para contrastar la eficacia de los métodos utilizados. Material y métodos: Para cumplir los objetivos, se utilizará una muestra de 32 corredores de un club de atletismo de Madrid, de los cuales 16 utilizarán los métodos de recuperación, mientras que los otros 16 restantes solo realizarán los controles de fatiga para comparar los resultados entre ambos grupos. Resultados: Al ser una propuesta teórica, los resultados esperados son una reducción del tiempo de recuperación muscular tras el ejercicio, una mejora del rendimiento y una reducción del riesgo de lesión de los participantes. Conclusiones: En conclusión, esta propuesta permitiría reducir la fatiga de los corredores y mejorar su rendimiento, provocando una mejora en el bienestar de los deportistas.

34. Interaction of angiotensin II with the angiotensin type 2 receptor inhibits the cardiac transient outward potassium current

Abstract

Objective: The Ca2+ -independent transient outward K+ current (Ito) plays a crucial role in shaping the cardiac action potential. In the present study, we examined whether angiotensin II (AngII) regulated the Ito as well as the putative intracellular cascade responsible for the effects. Methods: Ito was recorded in rat ventricular myocytes using the nystatin-perforated patch-clamp configuration. Results: AngII (0.1 microM) inhibited Ito (21.9+/-4.8% at +40 mV), but not the IK1, in a voltage- and time-independent manner. The inhibition decreased at concentrations higher than 1 microM resulting in a bell-shaped dose-response curve (IC50 = 3.1+/-1.5 microM). The blocking effects were abolished in the presence of the type 2 AngII receptor (AT2R) antagonist PD123319, but not in the presence of the selective type 1 AngII receptor (AT1R) antagonist candesartan. Moreover, the selective AT2R agonist CGP42112A completely reproduced the effects of AngII (20.5+/-2.4% of block at +40 mV), indicating that AngII-induced Ito block was mediated via stimulation of AT2R. Furthermore, selective stimulation of AT2R by CGP42112A significantly prolonged the rat atrial action potentials recorded using conventional microelectrode techniques. The AngII-induced inhibition of I(to) was not modified by either Npi-nitro-L-arginine-methyl ester (L-NAME) or eicosatetrayonic acid (ETYA), indicating that neither the nitric oxide (NO)-guanosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cGMP) system nor the arachidonic acid cascade was implicated in the effects of AngII on Ito. However, the AngII-induced Ito inhibition was completely abolished by the serine/threonine phosphatase type 2A (PP2A) inhibitors, okadaic acid and cantharidin, but not by the inactive analog of okadaic acid, 1-norokadaone. Intracellular application of PP2A decreased Kv4.2 currents recorded in transiently transfected Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO). Abstract

Objective: To analyze the frequent multimodal imaging features in posterior syphilitic uveitis. Purpose: Syphilis infection has re-emerged as a global health problem. Multimodal imaging approach has been proposed for diagnosis and follow-up; there are not previous reports dedicated to the anatomic and visual outcomes in patients diagnosed with ocular syphilis and concomitant HIV infection. Methods: All demographic information was recovered; a complete ophthalmological examination and multimodal imaging evaluation (retinal fluorescein angiography (FA), autofluorescence (AF), optical coherence tomography (OCT)) were performed on initial visit and 1 month after antibiotic therapy. Results: 18 eyes of 9 patients were included. The most frequent features observed were: Hyperfluorescence on optic disk on FA, Hyperautofluorescence punctate pattern on AF, Vitritis on SD-OCT. After treatment, there was a functional and anatomical improvement. Conclusion: Ocular syphilis represents a diagnostic challenge. Multimodal imaging approach allows identification of structural changes, follow-up and early detection of complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reduced expression and/or activity of Kv1.5 channels (encoded by KCNA5) is a common hallmark in human or experimental pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Likewise, genetic variants in KCNA5 have been found in PAH patients, but their functional consequences and potential impact on the disease are largely unknown. Herein, we aimed to characterize the functional consequences of 7 KCNA5 variants found in a cohort of PAH patients. Potassium currents were recorded by patch-clamp technique in HEK293 cells transfected with WT or mutant Kv1.5 cDNA. Flow cytometry, western blot and confocal microscopy techniques were used for measuring protein expression and cell apoptosis in HEK293 and human pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (hPASMC). KCNA5 variants found in PAH patients (namely, p.Arg184Pro and p.Gly384Arg) resulted in a clear loss of potassium channel function as assessed by electrophysiological and molecular modelling analyses. The p.Arg184Pro variant also resulted in a pronounced reduction of Kv1.5 expression. Transfection with p.Arg184Pro or p.Gly384Arg variants decreased apoptosis of hPASMCs compared with the WT, demonstrating that KCNA5 dysfunction in both variants affects cell viability. Thus, in addition to affecting channel activity, both variants were associated with impaired apoptosis, a crucial process linked to the disease. The estimated prevalence of dysfunctional KCNA5 variants in the PAH population analyzed was around 1 %. Our data indicate that some KCNA5 variants found PAH patients have critical consequences for channel function supporting the idea that KCNA5 pathogenic variants may be a causative or contributing factor for PAH.

Abstract

This article describes a new questionnaire, the “Diagnostic Inventory for Self-Regulated Language Learning” (DISLL), for assessing self-regulated learning strategies of students of English as an additional language. We discuss self-regulated learning models, evaluate existing questionnaires for assessing language learners’ selfregulated strategy use, and present a rationale for the DISLL. We explain Zimmerman’s (2000) three-phase model, adapted with simplified phase names: planning, doing, and reflecting. Every DISLL phase starts with a brief scenario to help learners judge how often they employ each strategy in that phase. Already completed are a review of the DISLL 1.0 by 18 international researchers, the step-by-step creation of the DISLL 1.1, and the profiling of vocabulary in the DISLL 1.1 to ensure the simplicity necessary for intermediate-level learners. We present an argument-based validation framework, to be supported by piloting the DISLL 1.2 in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Poland and even broader piloting of the DISLL 1.3. Statistical analyses will involve quantitative methods, e.g., exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, and confirmatory composite analysis.
