Abstract

Induction tube welding systems utilize an internal magnetic flux controller (impeder) to improve process efficiency. Work has previously been done showing that soft magnetic composite (SMC) materials may be suitable to improve these systems. A test stand was devised for the physical simulation of SMC impeder performance for use in induction tube welding systems. Tests were run to determine the loading and cooling conditions in which an impeder core made of SMCs could survive. Additionally, 2D thermal simulations were run to determine the cooling system thresholds given a particular magnetic loading of the core. The goal of these tests was to expand the design envelopes in which impeder cores made of SMCs could survive and validate their use in induction tube welding systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Simple Summary: Glioblastoma (GBM) generally recurs locally with a dismal median survival of <18 months. Combining thermal therapy with radiation therapy enhances radiation response and improves clinical outcomes. This study evaluates a thermobrachytherapy balloon implant intended for the simultaneous heat and radiation treatment of tumor resection cavities. The data demonstrate that our prototype implant produces spherically symmetric heat and radiation dose distributions around the balloon, while the in vivo experiments confirm our ability to heat ≥40 °C at a 5 mm distance from the balloon surface in highly perfused pig brain tissue. The device is now ready for the finalization of regulatory approvals in anticipation of early-stage clinical investigation. Previous work has reported the design of a novel thermobrachytherapy (TBT) balloon implant to deliver magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) hyperthermia and high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy simultaneously after brain tumor resection, thereby maximizing their synergistic effect. This paper presents an evaluation of the robustness of the balloon device, compatibility of its heat and radiation delivery components, as well as thermal and radiation dosimetry of the TBT balloon. TBT balloon devices with 1 and 3 cm diameter were evaluated when placed in an external magnetic field with a maximal strength of 8.1 kA/m at 133 kHz. The MNP solution (nanofluid) in the balloon absorbs energy, thereby generating heat, while an HDR source travels to the center of the balloon via a catheter to deliver the radiation dose. A 3D-printed human skull model was filled with brain-tissue-equivalent gel for in-phantom heating and radiation measurements around four 3 cm balloons. For the in vivo experiments, a 1 cm diameter balloon was surgically implanted in the brains of three living pigs (40–50 kg). The durability and robustness of TBT balloon implants, as well as the compatibility of their heat and radiation delivery components, were demonstrated in laboratory studies. The presence of the nanofluid, magnetic field, and heating up to 77 °C did not affect the radiation dose significantly. Thermal mapping and 2D infrared images demonstrated spherically symmetric heating in phantom as well as in brain tissue. In vivo pig experiments showed the ability to heat well-perfused brain tissue to hyperthermic levels (≥40 °C) at a 5 mm distance from the 60 °C balloon surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Research devoted to developing knowledge-based tools for database design has demonstrated that it is possible to encode a great deal of process knowledge about database design in a (knowledge-based) computer program. However, experience with these tools shows that the contribution of an expert human designer extends beyond his or her knowledge of database design techniques. This paper discusses the application of an approach, called Naive Semantics (NS), to simulate the contributions made to a design based on the designer's general knowledge. Naive semantics involves the use of an extensible store of generally understood knowledge about the world. This paper describes the types of information that could be included in a Naive Semantics knowledge base and how that knowledge might be applied to increase the effectiveness of automated database design systems. Results of various implementations of ontologies based on Naive Semantics are discussed. Index Terms--Naive Semantics, database design, design automation, entity-relationship model.

Abstract

An approach to organizing storage in database systems is presented that, under a wide range of conditions, saves both storage space and processing time. Text values in a database are replaced by short, fixed-length, rank-preserving numeric tokens. The actual values are stored in separate, nonredundant storage. Database operations that depend only on the relative magnitude of data values can be performed directly on the tokens. Tokenization is shown to improve database performance most in situations where there are a lot of ad hoc queries and a low volume of database insertions relative to other operations. Abstract

A new data abstraction, called Materialization, is introduced to model a situation that occurs frequently in the real world and has important implications for database design. Materialization is the relationship between two entity types, one that represents a conceptual object, for example, a TV Model, and one that represents its corresponding concrete objects, in this case, actual TV Sets. The materialization construct is formally defined and contrasted with other well-known data abstractions. Its design implications are presented in terms of the entity-relationship model and its translation into a relational model. Guidelines are offered for the proper employment of this relationship in database design methodologies, and a discussion is provided of why this constitutes an important data modeling construct. Abstract

Americans have long abhorred the specter of a faceless, bureaucratic Big Brother. As computerized personal data systems have grown more and more sophisticated, many people have become concerned about the threat these systems pose to the privacy of individual data subjects. Recently some regulations were passed to counter that threat, and, the authors say, the passage of laws to eliminate it throughout the country is imminent. But the cost of complying with them will be high. After looking at the probable shape of these laws, the authors discuss what the laws' impact will be on five actual personal data systems--consumer credit, health, personnel, insurance, and law enforcement. Abstract

The paper describes the MacAIMS Data Management System (MADAM). It begins with a brief discussion of the overall goals of the project, its operating environment (Multics), and its data management requirements. The MADAM system is based on a relational model of data, and employs set-theoretic primitive operations for manipulating data. The basic philosophy of the system and some issues involved in its implementation are described.
