Abstract

Context. Pluto's tenuous nitrogen (N2) atmosphere undergoes strong seasonal effects due to high obliquity and orbital eccentricity, and has been recently (July 2015) observed by the New Horizons spacecraft. Goals are (i) construct a well calibrated record of the seasonal evolution of surface pressure on Pluto and (ii) constrain the structure of the lower atmosphere using a central flash observed in 2015. Method: eleven stellar occultations by Pluto observed between 2002 and 2016 are used to retrieve atmospheric profiles (density, pressure, temperature) between $\sim$5 km and $\sim$380 km altitude levels (i.e. pressures from about 10 microbar to 10 nanobar). Results: (i) Pressure has suffered a monotonic increase from 1988 to 2016, that is compared to a seasonal volatile transport model, from which tight constraints on a combination of albedo and emissivity of N2 ice are derived; (ii) A central flash observed on 2015 June 29 is consistent with New Horizons REX profiles, provided that (a) large diurnal temperature variations (not expected by current models) occur over Sputnik Planitia and/or (b) hazes with tangential optical depth of about 0.3 are present at 4-7 km altitude levels and/or (c) the nominal REX density values are overestimated by an implausibly large factor of about 20% and/or (d) higher terrains block part of the flash in the Charon facing hemisphere., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

Asteroid modeling efforts in the last decade resulted in a comprehensive dataset of almost 400 convex shape models and their rotation states. This amount already provided a deep insight into physical properties of main-belt asteroids or large collisional families. We aim to increase the number of asteroid shape models and rotation states. Such results are an important input for various further studies such as analysis of asteroid physical properties in different populations, including smaller collisional families, thermophysical modeling, and scaling shape models by disk-resolved images, or stellar occultation data. This provides, in combination with known masses, bulk density estimates, but constrains also theoretical collisional and evolutional models of the Solar System. We use all available disk-integrated optical data (i.e., classical dense-in-time photometry obtained from public databases and through a large collaboration network as well as sparse-in-time individual measurements from a few sky surveys) as an input for the convex inversion method, and derive 3D shape models of asteroids, together with their rotation periods and orientations of rotation axes. The key ingredient is the support of more that one hundred observers who submit their optical data to publicly available databases. We present updated shape models for 36 asteroids, for which mass estimates are currently available in the literature or their masses will be most likely determined from their gravitational influence on smaller bodies, which orbital deflection will be observed by the ESA Gaia astrometric mission. This was achieved by using additional optical data from recent apparitions for the shape optimization. Abstract

The infrared (IR) spectrum of solid C60 exhibits many weak vibrational modes. Symmetry breaking due to 13C isotopes provides a possible route for optically activating IR-silent vibrational modes. Experimental spectra and a semi-empirical theory on natural abundance and 13C-enriched single crystals of C60 are presented. By comparing the experimental results with the theoretical results, we exclude this isotopic activation mechanism from the explanation for weakly active fundamentals in the spectra., Comment: Accepted for Phys. Abstract

Theoretical and experimental studies of the impact of interference on generic twin-engine transport aircraft configuration reveal that interference effects resulting from nacelle installation affect the total forces at the cruise Mach number. Transonic flow representing installation affects the upper wing surface while propulsion interference enhances the lower wing surface flow. Euler-equations for interference effects indicate that nacelle pressure profiles are also sensitive to interference effects.

Resume A l’heure actuelle, la consultation en routine de l’imagerie en coupe en peroperatoire necessite un contact physique avec une interface ce qui peut etre source de fautes d’asepsie et de perte de temps. L’apparition recente de dispositifs permettant d’interagir avec l’ordinateur sans contact physique comme le Leap Motion ® (societe Leap Motion, San Francisco, Etats-Unis) trouve alors en chirurgie un domaine d’application tres interessant mais peut se heurter a des problemes de configuration et d’ergonomie afin de s’adapter au praticien, au logiciel d’imagerie et a l’environnement chirurgical. L’objectif de cet article est de proposer une configuration facile du Leap Motion ® en neurochirurgie sur PC pour une utilisation optimisee avec le logiciel d’imagerie PACS Carestream ® Vue PACS v11.3.4 (Carestream Health, Inc., Rochester, Etats-Unis) par l’intermediaire d’un plug-in et d’une video de demonstration.

Abstract

Summary: A case of invasive Geotrichum capitatum infection is reported; a young patient had an acute leukemia for which he received a chemotherapy, and presented sepsis with blood cultures for Geotrichum capitatum, namely Dipodascus spicife; this pathogen only described in cactus rot, is responsable for the first case of a human disseminated infection reported in literature. Then he developed a splenic and epididymic infection, with positive cultures for Geotrichum capitaturn after splenectomy and castration. Treatment with amphotericin B and itraconazole was started with low minimal inhibitory concentration (0.1 μg/ml). The patient died of massive hemoptisis. Autopsy findings demonstrated a lung, brain and kidneys seeding. Zusammenfassung: Es wird uber eine invasive Geotrichum capitatum-Infektion berichtet. Ein Patient mit akuter myeloischer Leukamie, gegen die er eine Che-motherapie erhalten hatte, entwickelte eine Sepsis, bei der Geotrichum capitatum (Dipodascus spicifer) in Blutkulturen nach-gewiesen werden konnte; dieser Pilz, bisher als Erreger der Kaktusfaule beschrieben, erwies sich als die Ursache der ersten am Menschen beschriebenen disseminierten Infektion. Der Patient entwickelte eine Milz- und Nebenhodeninfektion mit kultu-rellem Nachweis nach Splenektomie und Kastration. Es wurde eine Behandlung mit Amphotericin B und Itraconazol bei niedri-gen MHK-Werten (0, l μg/ml) eingeleitet. Der Patient verstarb unter massiver Hamoptoe. Autoptisch wurde Pilzbefall auch der Lunge, des Gehirns und der Nie-ren nachgewiesen.

Abstract

International audience; Dissolution is a key step in several industrial processes. It is especially a milestone of the head-end of manyhydrometallurgical processes. For example, in recycling of spent nuclear fuel, the solubilization of the chemical elementsis essential before performing the liquid-liquid extraction steps to separate reusable material and final waste. One of themost complex scenarios is that of heterogeneous autocatalytic reactions. Today, there are few satisfying models forthese cases due to a lack of comprehension of their mechanisms.We focus here on the dissolution of uranium dioxide in nitric medium. In order to propose optimized processes fordissolution, this study aims at better understanding the chemical, physico-chemical and hydrodynamic phenomena ofsuch reactions. This study is also part of a modeling approach aiming, on one hand, at expressing the intrinsic reactionrates and describing the physico-chemical phenomena at interfaces and, on the other hand, at developing a generalmodel for dissolution reactors.Results Optical microscopy observation confirmed the highly autocatalytic nature of the reaction and led to measurements, forthe very first time, of true chemical kinetics of the reaction. The acid attack of sintering-manufactured solids occursthrough preferential attack sites. It develops cracks in the solids that can lead to their cleavage. This inhomogeneousattack is made possible by the establishment of bubbling in the cracks which allows periodic renewal of the reagents andthus maintains the reaction within the cracks. This point is a key component of the mechanism a strong link among thedevelopment of cracks, bubbling through the cracks, and overall dissolution kinetics is demonstrated in this work.A model coupling material balance to the structural evolution of the solid and liquid phase compositions, and taking intoaccount the interfacial transport is proposed. The simulations based on this model are close to the experimentalobservations, and allow to replicate the effect of various reaction parameters for the very first time, such as the reductionof overall kinetics when turbulence increases.
