Innovation-related activities have undergone steady internationalization in recent years. Host economies now need to offer a favourable environment to companies in which to develop their innovationrelated activities. This paper presents an econometric study of the locational criteria of innovation-related activities. The results show the importance of market size, agglomeration effects, and, to a lesser extent, the quality of public governance, to the location of international activities in innovation-related activities. The overall degree of a country's openness to foreign direct investment also appears to be a significant locational determinant. A seeming paradox of globalization is that while innovation and the industries and institutions that support it transcend local and national boundaries, high-tech innovative activity continues to agglomerate in a select number of high-capacity regions. Research, however, suggests that innovative regions must--through collaborative activity and related networks--both economize regional capacities while remaining open to global knowledge and finance. Collaboration and network formation are viewed as critical in this regard, as the competitive pressures of globalization are forcing firms to adopt collaborative and open innovation practices: forging relationships with external partners. Two important sources of knowledge and finance are regionally concentrated venture capital firms and large corporations, often globe-straddling multinational enterprises. While collaboration occurs between these two actors, an understanding of the processes and implications has only begun to emerge. Focusing on collaborative venture capital activity in London and the South East, this exploratory paper presents a preliminary understanding as to the role that this particular collaborative activity plays in the pursuit of complementary, extra-regional knowledge and expertise, and the extent to which this collaboration is recharacterizing the shape of regionally based venture capital networks. This paper introduces an analysis of international relocation decisions of venture capital (VC)-backed companies. Relocations to the United States are motivated by economic conditions as well as an improvement in the laws of the country in which the entrepreneurial firm is based. Relocations to the United States yield much greater returns to Asia-Pacific VCs than investing in companies already based in the United States at the time of VC investment. What are the electoral consequences of global market integration? Although recent discussions of politics and markets have much to say on globalization's implications for policy outcomes, the impact of market integration on representative democracy has received scant attention. This article addresses this omission. We extend the globalization literature to develop two competing hypotheses regarding the influence of open economies on electoral accountability. Predictions are tested using a new data set covering elections from 75 countries over 27 years. Results support a government constraint hypothesis: Exposure to the world economy weakens connections between economic performance and support for political incumbents. By redirecting concerns from the policy implications of globalization and toward its electoral consequences, findings highlight the influence of voter perceptions and of vote-seeking politicians in the politics of globalization. This paper analyses what the two main monotheist religious fundamentalisms--Islam and Christianity--have had to say about the international system, and in particular their attitudes towards, and visions of, 'globalization'. The paper concentrates upon the fundamentalist position in respect of the two religious doctrines discussed while fully recognizing that the non-fundamentalists and mainstream traditions in each case do not necessarily share the sentiments announced by--or pursued by--their fundamentalist co-religionists. But it is the fundamentalist variants of the two doctrines that are having the greatest impact on the international situation, so the emphasis is upon these (though there are also some shorter reflections on Jewish religious fundamentalism). In addition, the paper concentrates upon the attitudes of these positions towards the idea of 'territory' since this is one of those categories that are more widely at stake in the general discussion of globalization and its consequences. Finally, the paper assesses the impact of these doctrines on the conduct of international relations, the likely success or otherwise of their impact, and the nature of the international system that is being forged in the wake of the re-emergence of fundamentalist activity in the domestic and international spheres. This paper presents a model in which final goods producers outsource intermediate input production. Intermediate inputs are differentiated and their production can be located at home or abroad. The model is used to examine competitive location policy in a (two-country) free trade area (FTA). It is shown that national public infrastructure investment has a positive effect on both the number of intermediate input producers and the return to the immobile factor in the home country. International outsourcing from home declines. Opposite effects are triggered in the partner country. In a welfare analysis we characterize national infrastructure policies that aim to maximize national income (net of tax costs) and compare the non-cooperative FTA-equilibrium with optimal policies from an integrated point of view. We show whether or not there is a need for policy coordination. Firm subsidies are discussed as an alternative to public infrastructure investment. The author argues that it is high time to relocate translatology, notably concerning literary and cultural translation, in the contemporary academic landscape in all cultures, including those of emerging nations, in the present era of globalization. It is submitted that, as a discipline related to social sciences and the humanities, translatology can be studied descriptively at two levels, namely as (a) contrastive linguistics, (b) and comparative literature involving cultural studies without necessarily 'belonging' to any of these disciplines. By dint of the plethora of elements and factors in translation and interpreting practice and theory, the field has its own subject matter, domains of research as well as methodology. It is argued that the methodology should be both aesthetic and empirical. Along with the acceleration of globalization, the function of translatology will become more and more manifest. This article takes a critical look at the discourse of globalization in the realm of television, suggesting that the dichotomy between national and global television is unduly simplistic. It proposes that a better understanding of how global television content enters local broadcasting is achieved by examining three variables: who selects the content and for whom, the proportion of local to foreign content, and how foreign content is adapted to local viewing. Based on these features and an analysis of the Israeli case, the author presents a typology of six types of television channels--a typology that focuses on the various viewing positions offered by various channels.
