Subsea control systems utilize electric and/or optical communication channels within subsea optical distribution systems for redundant, duplex telemetry between topside facilities and subsea control systems. Downhole fiber optic sensing (DFOS) systems utilize the same subsea optical distribution systems for establishing transmission paths between the same topside facilities and downhole sensing fibers. To date, subsea fiber optic control and sensing systems have been operated on independent subsea optical distribution systems. This redundancy introduces complexity and cost into the overall subsea optical distribution system required for subsea developments. We describe the systems that combine fiber optic communications for subsea control systems and downhole fiber optic sensing systems into the same subsea optical distribution system. This enables simultaneous operation of communications between the topsides and subsea control module, and the topside interrogation of multiple downhole fiber optic sensors while preserving dry-tree equivalent sensing performance.

Lake Tana is one of East Africa’s largest freshwater bodies, yet many of its fishes are migratory and utilize in-flowing tributaries as critical spawning habitat. However, factors such as expanding water resources developments and sand mining along these rivers and streams may disrupt this ecosystem function. We monitored juvenile and adult fish abundance and water quality across five lake tributaries from August 2014 to April 2015 to examine how irrigation schemes and water quality affect assemblage and population structure. Adult assemblages were dominated by Labeobarbus cyprinids and varied between tributaries, albeit without separation by irrigation development or sand mining. Overall, adult abundances of the dominant migratory Labeobarbus species were four-fold higher below the Shini River irrigation weir than upstream. Contrastingly, juvenile abundances were often significantly higher above these structures. Juvenile abundances decreased on average by 46% along the first 1000 m of two irrigation canals, suggesting poor habitat suitability or high mortalities from water withdrawals. Water quality varied more between rivers than sampling times, but without any separation of tributaries by irrigation or sand mining. Conductivity and turbidity-related parameters had the highest correlation with adult assemblage structure and individual species abundances. These findings indicate that Lake Tana tributaries must be managed on a case by case basis, with more focus given to mechanisms allowing fish to bypass irrigation developments and the direct assessment of fish populations between sand mining and other sites.

Graphical abstract Parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are present in a number of different sources in varying proportions depending on the source material and weathering. This range of PAH sources can make it difficult to determine the origin of exposure(s). Ratios of alkylated and parent PAHs have been applied as a forensic tool to distinguish between different sources. However, few studies have examined PAH ratios comprehensively as indicators for sourcing beyond a single study area or matrix type. In this paper, we introduce an expanded analytical method based on ASTM D7363-13a which we adapted for a gas chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry instrument. The modifications increase selectivity and sensitivity compared to the ASTM method. We added five alkylated series to the method. This method has then been applied to 22 independent forensic ratios. We evaluated the method and the forensic ratios with certified reference materials and known environmental samples. This analytical method and thirteen PAH ratios were found to accurately predict sources of PAHs. Background Ethiopia has set a goal for malaria elimination by 2030. Low parasite density infections may go undetected by conventional diagnostic methods (microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests) and their contribution to malaria transmission varies by transmission settings. This study quantified the burden of subpatent infections from samples collected from three regions of northwest Ethiopia. Methods Sub-samples of dried blood spots from the Ethiopian Malaria Indicator Survey 2015 (EMIS-2015) were tested and compared using microscopy, rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), and nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) to determine the prevalence of subpatent infection. Paired seroprevalence results previously reported along with gender, age, and elevation of residence were explored as risk factors for Plasmodium infection. Results Of the 2608 samples collected, the highest positive rate for Plasmodium infection was found with nPCR 3.3% (95% CI 2.7–4.1) compared with RDT 2.8% (95% CI 2.2–3.5) and microscopy 1.2% (95% CI 0.8–1.7). Of the nPCR positive cases, Plasmodium falciparum accounted for 3.1% (95% CI 2.5–3.8), Plasmodium vivax 0.4% (95% CI 0.2–0.7), mixed P. falciparum and P. vivax 0.1% (95% CI 0.0–0.4), and mixed P. falciparum and Plasmodium malariae 0.1% (95% CI 0.0–0.3). nPCR detected an additional 30 samples that had not been detected by conventional methods. The majority of the nPCR positive cases (61% (53/87)) were from the Benishangul-Gumuz Region. Malaria seropositivity had significant association with nPCR positivity [adjusted OR 10.0 (95% CI 3.2–29.4), P Conclusion Using nPCR the detection rate of malaria parasites increased by nearly threefold over rates based on microscopy in samples collected during a national cross-sectional survey in 2015 in Ethiopia. Such subpatent infections might contribute to malaria transmission. In addition to strengthening routine surveillance systems, malaria programmes may need to consider low-density, subpatent infections in order to accelerate malaria elimination efforts.

Recent deployments of subsea optical distribution systems and single-fiber optical feedthrough systems have enabled distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) of subsea wells to augment existing electric pressure and temperature sensing systems. Following recent developments of multi-fiber optical feedthrough systems enabling multiple downhole fibers, we describe the concepts for all-optical downhole sensing solutions that combine distributed acoustic and temperature sensing (DAS/DTS) with discrete fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing of pressure and temperature gauge arrays while minimizing impact on subsea optical distribution. Since DAS, DTS, and FBG sensing operates at different optical wavelengths, we combine them via a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) so they are distributed via the the same subsea fiber topology. This subsea fiber topology involves two transmission fibers in the umbilicals and subsea distribution systems to a remote and passive optical multiplexer and circulator assembly deployed in the optical flying lead (OFL) or optical feedthrough system (OFS) of the subsea tree. This enables the down-going transmission fiber to be split into three sensing fibers which are coupled to three downhole fibers via a multi-fiber optical feedthrough system: one fiber for DAS and DTS sensing, and two fibers for FBG sensing of pressure and temperature gauge arrays. The circulators enable dry-tree equivalent pulse repetition rates, regardless of the tieback distance, and via another remote wavelength division multiplexer (WDM), recombine the backscatter light from multiple downhole fibers into the up-going transmission fiber. This pure backscattered light can be selectively amplified prior to entering the receiver arms of the DAS, DTS, and FBG interrogators. The dry-tree equivalent sensing performance implies that the variety of DAS, DTS and pressure and temperature algorithms developed for reservoir and well diagnostics can be equally applied straightforward to DAS, DTS, and FBG-based pressure and temperature data acquired from subsea wells.

OBJECTIVE. Endothelial dysfunction in diabetes is generally attributed to oxidative stress, but this view is challenged by observations showing antioxidants do not eliminate diabetic vasculopathy. As an alternative to oxidative stress-induced dysfunction, we interrogated if impaired mitochondrial function in endothelial cells is central to endothelial dysfunction in the metabolic syndrome. APPROACH AND RESULTS. We observed reduced coronary arteriolar vasodilation to the endothelium-dependent dilator, acetylcholine (Ach), in Zucker Obese Fatty rats (ZOF, 34±15% [mean ± standard deviation] 10(−3) M) compared to Zucker Lean rats (ZLN, 98±11%). This reduction in dilation occurred concomitantly with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) strand lesions and reduced mitochondrial complex activities in the endothelium of ZOF versus ZLN. To demonstrate endothelial dysfunction is linked to impaired mitochondrial function, administration of a cell-permeable, mitochondria-directed endonuclease (mt-tat-EndoIII), to repair oxidatively modified DNA in ZOF, restored mitochondrial function and vasodilation to Ach (94±13%). Conversely, administration of a cell-permeable, mitochondria-directed exonuclease (mt-tat-ExoIII) produced mtDNA strand breaks in ZLN, reduced mitochondrial complex activities and vasodilation to Ach in ZLN (42±16%). To demonstrate that mitochondrial function is central to endothelium-dependent vasodilation, we introduced (via electroporation) liver mitochondria (from ZLN) into the endothelium of a mesenteric vessel from ZOF and restored endothelium-dependent dilation to vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP at 10(−5) M, 4±3% vasodilation before mitochondrial transfer and 48±36% after transfer). Finally, to demonstrate mitochondrial function is key to endothelium-dependent dilation, we administered oligomycin (mitochondrial ATP synthase inhibitor) and observed a reduction in endothelium-dependent dilation. CONCLUSIONS. We conclude that mitochondrial function is critical for endothelium-dependent vasodilation.

The black soil region of northeast China is one of the most productive regions of the world. The depth of A horizon is rapidly decreasing due to excessive erosion. A strategy for erosion hazard evaluation and soil conservation planning has been proposed and tested on the region. Climate, geomorphology, DEM, soil, landuse, runoff plot and corn yield data were compiled. Soil erosion rate, A horizon thickness and corn yield under six conservation scenarios during 2020~2200 was predicted. The six scenarios include Present (continue present practices), Contour (contour tillage), Straw (straw incorporated in tillage layer), Combo 1 (contour tillage and terracing etc.), No-till (no-till farming) and Combo 2 (partially Combo 1 and partially No-till). Current soil life expectancy of A horizon (SLEA), which is the time until a critical horizon thickness needed for sustaining crop production is reached, was calculated for each scenario. We hypothesize that enhancing mitochondrial base excision repair (BER) capability in brain will reduce reperfusion-associated ischemic brain injury. Post-stroke reperfusion was modeled in mice via transient filament occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (60 min) (transient MCAO). Administration of a TAT-modified form of a DNA glycosylase (EndoIII) following reperfusion of the brain reduced resultant brain infarct volume. Protection was dose-dependent, BER enzyme specific, and regionally specific (more effective via the jugular vein). EndoIII is compatible with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). The time window of a single dose of EndoIII effect is 3 h following reperfusion onset. These data suggest a novel approach to enhance protection of reperfused brain in the setting of revascularization procedures (thrombectomy or thrombolytic therapy) following stroke.

The Darling hardyhead, Craterocephalus amniculus (Atherinidae), is a threatened fish species inhabiting upstream reaches of a number of northern Murray-Darling Basin catchments. Little is known of its life history. Our goal was to determine patterns of seasonal size structure, interannual and spatial variation in diet, and habitat selection in this species across multiple sites and years in the upper Macintyre River, northern New South Wales. Preserved specimens from a separate study were used to obtain information on diet and size structure. Size structures suggested a single annual spawning season in late September or early October. Diets varied significantly, both between years at the downstream site and among the three sites although the underlying cause of this was untested. Dietary diversity increased with distance downstream. At the two upstream sites, aquatic invertebrates made up most of the diet while over half the gut contents at the downstream site was unidentified detritus. Preference was shown for pool habitats with a sand or cobble substrate, increased channel depth and width and distance from the bank, and reduced flow velocity. Overhanging exotic riparian vegetation and in-stream woody debris were non-preferred. This species may be vulnerable to further population decline in light of its restricted habitat preferences and narrow spawning season. However, comparable data from nearby catchments will be necessary to ascertain the species’ conservation status across its broader distribution.

With hundreds of thousands of chemicals in the environment, effective monitoring requires high-throughput analytical techniques. This paper presents a quantitative screening method for 1550 chemicals based on statistical modeling of responses with identification and integration performed using deconvolution reporting software. The method was evaluated with representative environmental samples. We tested biological extracts, low-density polyethylene, and silicone passive sampling devices spiked with known concentrations of 196 representative chemicals. A multiple linear regression (R2 = 0.80) was developed with molecular weight, logP, polar surface area, and fractional ion abundance to predict chemical responses within a factor of 2.5. Linearity beyond the calibration had R2 > 0.97 for three orders of magnitude. Median limits of quantitation were estimated to be 201 pg/μL (1.9× standard deviation). The number of detected chemicals and the accuracy of quantitation were similar for environmental samples and standard solutions. To our knowledge, this is the most precise method for the largest number of semi-volatile organic chemicals lacking authentic standards. Accessible instrumentation and software make this method cost effective in quantifying a large, customizable list of chemicals. When paired with silicone wristband passive samplers, this quantitative screen will be very useful for epidemiology where binning of concentrations is common. Wristbands are increasingly used for assessing personal chemical exposures. Unlike some exposure assessment tools, guidelines for wristbands, such as preparation, applicable chemicals, and transport and storage logistics, are lacking. We tested the wristband’s capacity to capture and retain 148 chemicals including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, flame retardants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). The chemicals span a wide range of physical–chemical properties, with log octanol–air partitioning coefficients from 2.1 to 13.7. All chemicals were quantitatively and precisely recovered from initial exposures, averaging 102% recovery with relative SD ≤21%. In simulated transport conditions at +30 °C, SVOCs were stable up to 1 month (average: 104%) and VOC levels were unchanged (average: 99%) for 7 days. During long-term storage at −20 °C up to 3 (VOCs) or 6 months (SVOCs), all chemical levels were stable from chemical degradation or diffusional losses, averaging 110%. Applying a paired wristband/active sampler study with human participants, the first estimates of wristband–air partitioning coefficients for PAHs are presented to aid in environmental air concentration estimates. Extrapolation of these stability results to other chemicals within the same physical–chemical parameters is expected to yield similar results. As we better define wristband characteristics, wristbands can be better integrated in exposure science and epidemiological studies.

Background Measures of malaria burden using microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) in cross-sectional household surveys may incompletely describe the burden of malaria in low-transmission settings. This study describes the pattern of malaria transmission in Ethiopia using serological antibody estimates derived from a nationwide household survey completed in 2015. Methods Dried blood spot (DBS) samples were collected during the Ethiopian Malaria Indicator Survey in 2015 from malarious areas across Ethiopia. Samples were analysed using bead-based multiplex assays for IgG antibodies for six Plasmodium antigens: four human malaria species-specific merozoite surface protein-1 19kD antigens (MSP-1) and Apical Membrane Antigen-1 (AMA-1) for Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. Seroprevalence was estimated by age, elevation and region. The seroconversion rate was estimated using a reversible catalytic model fitted with maximum likelihood methods. Results Of the 10,278 DBS samples available, 93.6% (9622/10,278) had valid serological results. The mean age of participants was 15.8 years and 53.3% were female. National seroprevalence for antibodies to P. falciparum was 32.1% (95% confidence interval (CI) 29.8–34.4) and 25.0% (95% CI 22.7–27.3) to P. vivax. Estimated seroprevalences for Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale were 8.6% (95% CI 7.6–9.7) and 3.1% (95% CI 2.5–3.8), respectively. The external noise immunity of a real structure’s scale model has been studied. Using the scale model improves the accuracy and reduces the convergence time of numerical simulation. Different coupling paths into the structure were investigated using the Computer Simulation Technology (CST) electromagnetic simulation software. The effects of slot, aperture-slot, and gap-slot coupling apertures on the shielding performance of the scale model are the same as for the real tunnel box. The simulation results were experimentally verified through three different measurement setups.

In this paper, the immunity of a tunnel box shielding structure against external electromagnetic noise has been studied. The electromagnetic susceptibility of the structure has been characterized by determining different coupling paths into the system. Computer Simulation Technology (CST) electromagnetic simulation software was used for all simulation. The effects of slot, aperture-slot and gap-slot on shielding performance have been studied. The simulation results were verified through measurement.

This study investigated how changes in reservoir water level affect mosquito abundance and malaria transmission in Ethiopia. Digital elevation models of three Ethiopian dams at lowland, midland and highland elevations were used to quantify water surface area and wetted shoreline at different reservoir water levels (70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95 and 100% full capacity) to estimate surface area of potential mosquito breeding habitat. Reservoir water level drawdown rates of 10, 15 and 20 mm.day−1 were applied as scenarios to model larval abundance, entomological inoculation rate (EIR) and malaria prevalence at each dam. Malaria treatment cost and economic cost in terms of lost working days were calculated for each water level scenario and dam. At the lowland dam, increased larval abundances were associated with increasing reservoir water level and wetted shoreline area. In contrast, both larval abundances and area of wetted shoreline declined with increasing reservoir water level at the midland and highland dams. Estimated EIR, malaria prevalence, malaria treatment cost and economic cost generally decreased when the water level drawdown rate increased from 10 to 15 and 20 mm.day−1 irrespective of reservoir water level. Given the expansion of dam construction in sub-Saharan Africa, incorporating malaria control measures such as manipulating drawdown rates into reservoir management has the potential to reduce the malaria burden and health care costs in communities near reservoirs.

This work uses passive samplers to identify PAHs and OPAHs not previously associated with artificial turf, and to provide the first quantitative measure of in situ flux of semi-volatile contaminants on artificial turf fields. Both air (1.5-m height) and turf air (immediately above turf surface) were sampled using two sampling materials: low-density polyethylene and silicone. Utilizing a broad targeted screen, we assess both artificial turf and samples of crumb rubber for over 1530 chemicals including pesticides, phthalates, and personal care products. We report the presence of 25 chemicals that have not yet been reported in artificial turf literature, including some with known human effects. The samplers were also quantitatively analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons yielding gas-phase concentrations at breathing height and surface level—the first such report on an artificial turf outdoor field. Turf pore-air and air chemicals were highly correlated at all sites, and particularly at the recently installed indoor site. Flux of chemicals between air and turf surface appear to follow field age although more research is needed to confirm this trend. The thermal extraction process and silicone passive samplers used are suitable for larger-scale environmental sampling campaigns that aim for less solvent and sample processing. By co-deploying silicone passive samplers and conventional low-density polyethylene, partitioning coefficients are derived that can be used for future silicone passive air sampling environmental assessment. This study provides an initial demonstration that passive samplers can be used to quantify volatile and semi-volatile organic chemicals from artificial turf.

We describe modified gas chromatography electron-impact/triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC–EI/MS/MS) utilizing a newly developed hydrogen-injected self-cleaning ion source and modified 9 mm extractor lens. This instrument, with optimized parameters, achieves quantitative separation of 62 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Existing methods historically limited rigorous identification and quantification to a small subset, such as the 16 PAHs the US EPA has defined as priority pollutants. Without the critical source and extractor lens modifications, the off-the-shelf GC–EI/MS/MS system was unsuitable for complex PAH analysis. Separations were enhanced by increased gas flow, a complex GC temperature profile incorporating multiple isothermal periods, specific ramp rates, and a PAH-optimized column. Typical determinations with our refined GC–EI/MS/MS have a large linear range of 1–10,000 pg μl−1 and detection limits of 0.998, exceptional for compounds which are archetypally difficult. With this method benzo[a]fluorene, benzo[b]fluorene, benzo[c]fluorene were fully separated as was benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, and benzo[j]fluoranthene. Chrysene and triphenylene, were sufficiently separated to allow accurate quantitation. Mean limits of detection (LODs) across all PAHs were 1.02 ± 0.84 pg μl−1 with indeno[1,2,3-c,d] pyrene having the lowest LOD at 0.26 pg μl−1 and only two analytes above 2.0 pg μl−1; acenaphthalene (2.33 pg μl−1) and dibenzo[a,e]pyrene (6.44 pg μl−1).

Background: Intensive care medicine is a relatively young discipline that has rapidly grown into a full-fledged medical subspecialty. Intensivists are responsible for managing an ever-increasing number of patients with complex, lifethreatening diseases. Several factors may influence their performance, including age, training, experience, workload, and socioeconomic context. The aim of this study was to examine individual- and work-related aspects of the Latin American intensivist workforce, mainly with academic appointments, which might influence the quality of care provided. In consequence, we conducted a cross-sectional study of intensivists at public and private academic and nonacademic Latin American intensive care units (ICUs) through a web-based electronic survey submitted by email. Questions about personal aspects, work-related topics, and general clinical workflow were incorporated. Results: Our study comprised 735 survey respondents (53% return rate) with the following country-specific breakdown: Brazil (29%); Argentina (19%); Chile (17%); Uruguay (12%); Ecuador (9%); Mexico (7%); Colombia (5%); and Bolivia, Peru, Guatemala, and Paraguay combined (2%). Latin American intensivists were predominantly male (68%) young adults (median age, 40 [IQR, 35–48] years) with a median clinical ICU experience of 10 (IQR, 5–20) years. The median weekly workload was 60 (IQR, 47–70) h. ICU formal training was between 2 and 4 years. Only 63% of academic ICUs performed multidisciplinary rounds. Most intensivists (85%) reported adequate conditions to manage patients with septic shock in their units. Unsatisfactory conditions were attributed to insufficient technology (11%), laboratory support (5%), imaging resources (5%), and drug shortages (5%). Seventy percent of intensivists participated in research, and 54% read scientific studies regularly, whereas 32% read no more than one scientific study per month. Research grants and pharmaceutical sponsorship are unusual funding sources in Latin America. Although Latin American intensivists are mostly unsatisfied with their income (81%), only a minority (27%) considered changing to another specialty before retirement. Conclusions: Latin American intensivists constitute a predominantly young adult workforce, mostly formally trained, have a high workload, and most are interested in research. They are under important limitations owing to resource constraints and overt dissatisfaction. Latin America may be representative of other world areas with similar challenges for intensivists. Specific initiatives aimed at addressing these situations need to be devised to improve the quality of critical care delivery in Latin America.

Background Water level management has been suggested as a potential tool to reduce malaria around large reservoirs. However, no field-based test has been conducted to assess the effect of water level management on mosquito larval abundance in African settings. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the effects of water level drawdown rates on mosquito larval abundance. Methods Twelve experimental dams were constructed on the foreshore of the Koka Dam in Ethiopia. These were grouped into four daily water drawdown treatments, each with three replicates: no water-level drawdown (Group 1; Control), 10 mm.d-1 (Group 2), 15 mm.d-1 (Group 3) and 20 mm.d-1 (Group 4). Larval sampling was conducted weekly for a period of 6 weeks each in the main malaria transmission season (October to November 2013) and subsequent dry season (February to March 2014). Larval densities were compared among treatments over time using repeated measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Results A total of 284 Anopheles mosquito larvae were collected from the experimental dams during the study period. Most (63.4%; n = 180) were collected during the main malaria transmission season while the remaining (36.6%; n = 104) were collected during the dry season. Larvae comprised four Anopheles species, dominated by Anopheles arabiensis (48.1% of total larval samples; n = 136) and An. pharoensis (33.2%; n = 94). Mean larval density was highest in control treatment dams with stable water levels throughout the study, and decreased significantly (P < 0.05) with increasing water drawdown rates in both seasons. During the main transmission season, anopheline larval density was generally lower by 30%, 70% and 84% in Groups 2, Group 3 and Group 4, respectively, compared with the control dams (Group 1). In the dry season, larval density was reduced by 45%, 70% and 84% in Groups 2, Group 3 and Group 4, respectively, when compared to the control dams. Conclusion Increased water drawdown rates were associated with lower mosquito larval abundance. Water level management could thus serve as a potential control measure for malaria vectors around reservoirs by regulating the persistence of shallow shoreline breeding habitats. Dam operators and water resource managers should consider incorporating water level management as a malaria control mechanism into routine dam operations to manage the risk of malaria transmission to human populations around reservoirs.

Summary Alteration of flow and thermal regimes is a key consequence of human use of river and floodplain ecosystems, and these impacts result from a range of interacting ecological mechanisms. Environmental flow regimes are a management strategy to restore or maintain ecologically important aspects of river hydrology. However, inadequate understanding of the processes that determine the effects of flow on population dynamics of biota hinders the maximum benefits of environmental flows. Spawning and recruitment of riverine fish is mediated by temperature, access to nursery habitat and the timing and availability of resources. Differences in population sizes between regulated and unregulated rivers are often attributed to the effect of flow and thermal regime change on population dynamics. Dams and extraction of water have altered the flow and thermal regimes of rivers in the northern Murray–Darling Basin, Australia. Combining three studies, we (i) examined differences in the recruitment of fish and patterns of potential prey availability between a regulated and unregulated river, (ii) studied the relationships between patterns of flow and temperature on spawning of fish in two rivers with contrasting regulated flow regimes and (iii) experimentally tested the effects of environmental flow releases in a regulated river on fish spawning and recruitment by comparing patterns over time against two unregulated rivers. Comparisons between regulated and unregulated rivers indicated that the significantly lower recruitment of Macquaria ambigua in the regulated river was linked with large differences in available prey. Species-specific differences in the abundance of fish larvae between two regulated rivers indicated that different reproductive strategies determine population-level responses to flow regulation. Finally, the experimental flow releases in a regulated reach during late spring did not result in a change in spawning and recruitment of fish, although influences of antecedent flow and temperature on larval and juvenile assemblage composition were significant. These findings indicate that the responses of fish spawning and recruitment to flow regime change and restoration are dependent on the conditions that determine the success of these critical life-history processes. Specifically, key effects of flow regulation are reduced summer water temperatures due to hypolimnetic discharge from dams, and the reduced frequency and duration of low flows. Reduced water temperatures limit opportunities for fish to spawn, and sustained base flows were associated with lower densities of potential prey sources in conjunction with potential flushing of larvae and juveniles, thereby influencing recruitment. The benefits of environmental flow programmes can be enhanced if flow regimes are modified to ensure that abiotic and biotic conditions that support persistence of biota are provided. In conjunction with flow pulses and floods, low flows are a natural and ecologically important component of flow regimes, particularly in dryland rivers. Understanding the interactive and mechanistic effects of flow and thermal regimes on population viability and patterns of biodiversity is critical to maximising the value of environmental flows.

Background Dams are important to ensure food security and promote economic development in sub-Saharan Africa. However, a poor understanding of the negative public health consequences from issues such as malaria could affect their intended advantages. This study aims to compare the malaria situation across elevation and proximity to dams. Such information may contribute to better understand how dams affect malaria in different eco-epidemiological settings. Methods Larval and adult mosquitoes were collected from dam and non-dam villages around the Kesem (lowland), Koka (midland), and Koga (highland) dams in Ethiopia between October 2013 and July 2014. Determination of blood meal sources and detection of Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites was done using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Five years of monthly malaria case data (2010–2014) were also collected from health centers in the study villages. Results Mean monthly malaria incidence was two- and ten-fold higher in the lowland dam village than in midland and highland dam villages, respectively. The total surface area of anopheline breeding habitats and the mean larval density was significantly higher in the lowland dam village compared with the midland and highland dam villages. Similarly, the mean monthly malaria incidence and anopheline larval density was generally higher in the dam villages than in the non-dam villages in all the three dam settings. Anopheles arabiensis, Anopheles pharoensis, and Anopheles funestus s.l. were the most common species, largely collected from lowland and midland dam villages. Larvae of these species were mainly found in reservoir shoreline puddles and irrigation canals. The mean adult anopheline density was significantly higher in the lowland dam village than in the midland and highland dam villages. The annual entomological inoculation rate (EIR) of An. arabiensis, An. funestus s.l., and An. pharoensis in the lowland dam village was 129.8, 47.8, and 33.3 infective bites per person per annum, respectively. The annual EIR of An. arabiensis and An. pharoensis was 6.3 and 3.2 times higher in the lowland dam village than in the midland dam village. Conclusions This study found that the presence of dams intensifies malaria transmission in lowland and midland ecological settings. Dam and irrigation management practices that could reduce vector abundance and malaria transmission need to be developed for these regions.

Hydrological regime, physical habitat structure and water chemistry are interacting drivers of fish assemblage structure in floodplain rivers throughout the world. In rivers with altered flow regimes, understanding fish assemblage responses to flow and physico-chemical conditions is important in setting priorities for environmental flow allocations and other river management strategies. To this end we examined fish assemblage patterns across a simple gradient of flow regulation in the upper Murray-Darling Basin, Australia. We found clear separation of three fish assemblage groups that were spatially differentiated in November 2002, at the end of the winter dry season. Fish assemblage patterns were concordant with differences in water chemistry, but not with the geomorphological attributes of channel and floodplain waterholes. After the summer-flow period, when all in-channel river sites received flow, some floodplain sites were lost to drying and one increased in volume, fish assemblages were less clearly differentiated. The fish assemblages of river sites did not increase in richness or abundance in response to channel flow and the associated potential for increased fish recruitment and movement associated with flow connectivity. Instead, the more regulated river's fish assemblages appeared to be under stress, most likely from historical flow regulation. These findings have clear implications for the management of hydrological regimes and the provision of environmental flows in regulated rivers of the upper Murray-Darling Basin.

Slow growth and losses to bird predation and infectious diseases in winter can compromise the profitability of silver perch farming. To evaluate over-wintering silver perch (Bidyanus bidyanus) in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), fingerlings (38 g) were stocked in either cages in a pond at ambient temperatures (10-21 °C) or tanks in the RAS at elevated temperatures (19-25 °C) and cultured for 125 days. Mean survival (96%), final weight (146 g), specific growth rate (1.07% day⁻¹) and production rate (28.1 kg m⁻³) of fish in the RAS were significantly higher than for fish over-wintered in cages (77%, 73 g, 0.53% day⁻¹, 11.1 kg m⁻³). Fish from both treatments were then reared in cages for a further 129 days. Final mean weight of fish originally over-wintered in the RAS was 426 g, while fish over-wintered in cages were only 273 g. To determine optimal stocking densities, fingerlings (11.8 g) were stocked at 500, 1000 or 1500 fish m⁻³ in tanks in the RAS and cultured for 124 days. Survival was not affected, but growth was significantly slower and feed conversion ratio higher at 1500 fish m⁻³ compared with 500 or 1000 fish m⁻³. Results demonstrate that over-wintering silver perch in an RAS can produce large fingerlings for grow-out in early spring. This strategy could eliminate bird predation, reduce losses to diseases and shorten the overall culture period.

Designers today face the daunting challenge of having to create more powerful, more innovative, and higher quality products through better, faster, and less costly processes. Can present approaches meet these challenges? Probably not. How might, we develop approaches that can? One path that seems reasonable is to try to gain a bettor understanding of the conditions and practices that lead to our best designs. If we can identify and describe these conditions in sufficient detail, then perhaps we can reproduce them and increase our chances of meeting today's challenges. This essay offers a preliminary sketch of a concept called the “liminal state” that we feel may represent a central element of designing and a condition that when embraced leads to the very best design products and processes. We will define the “liminal state,” describe a variety of contexts in which it may occur, and speculate on some particular areas where liminal states might improve performance.

Background While there is growing recognition of the malaria impacts of large dams in sub-Saharan Africa, the cumulative malaria impact of reservoirs associated with current and future dam developments has not been quantified. The objective of this study was to estimate the current and predict the future impact of large dams on malaria in different eco-epidemiological settings across sub-Saharan Africa. Methods The locations of 1268 existing and 78 planned large dams in sub-Saharan Africa were mapped against the malaria stability index (stable, unstable and no malaria). The use of low-cost thermopile sensors for aerial vehicle roll angle estimation was investigated as an alternative to GPS reliant navigation solutions. The minimal number of measurements necessary to estimate vehicle roll was determined. A physics-based sensor model was used to investigate the effect on estimate error over sensor field-of-view angle and for nonminimal sensor sets. The bound on error introduced by the reduced-fidelity sensor model used for estimation was detailed and discussed. The performance of the minimal, three sensor array was contrasted with a larger array and demonstrated that sub-degree accuracy is possible with the method of estimation introduced here.

2.5D electromagnetic (EM) modelling computes the response due to a 3D source from an arbitrary 2D geoelectrical model which has an infinite strike length. As such, airborne EM (AEM) data can be inverted using 2.5D modelling provided that the geoelectrical cross-section is relatively constant along a strike length that exceeds the AEM system footprint. The program ArjunAir is introduced for modelling and inversion based on a 2D finite-element method that enables the accurate simulation of 3D source excitation for full domain models inclusive of topography, non-conforming boundaries and very high resistivity contrasts. Inversion is based on an iterative Gauss-Newton method that is solved using the damped eigenparameter algorithm. Examples are presented for synthetic frequency and time-domain AEM surveys for which inversion run-times are in the order of hours.

The United States (U.S.) National Park Service has initiated research on the atmospheric deposition and fate of semi-volatile organic compounds in its alpine, sub-Arctic, and Arctic ecosystems in the Western U.S. Results for the analysis of pesticides in seasonal snowpack samples collected in spring 2003 from seven national parks are presented herein. From a target analyte list of 47 pesticides and degradation products, the most frequently detected current-use pesticides were dacthal, chlorpyrifos, endosulfan, and gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane, whereas the mostfrequently detected historic-use pesticides were dieldrin, alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane, chlordane, and hexachlorobenzene. Correlation analysis with latitude, temperature, elevation, particulate matter, and two indicators of regional pesticide use reveal that regional current and historic agricultural practices are largely responsible for the distribution of pesticides in the national parks in this study. Pesticide deposition in the Alaskan parks is attributed to long-range transport because there are no significant regional pesticide sources. The percentage of total pesticide concentration due to regional transport (%RT) was calculated for the other parks. %RT was highest at parks with higher regional cropland intensity and for pesticides with lower vapor pressures and shorter half-lives in air.

This paper reports on a spatial model that can be used to support evaluation of the effectiveness of automated collision notification (ACN) technology. Such systems rely on wireless phones to transmit their crash messages. However, cellular coverage exhibits great variation in hilly and rural areas, and these are regions where ACN devices provide their greatest benefits. In this context, the accurate prediction of cell phone signal strength is of paramount importance and hence, an in-depth analysis of the variables influencing the cellular signal is necessary. In this paper, we first model the spatial variation of cell phone coverage using an interpolation method known as kriging. We focus on how particular factors such as slope, altitude, distance to the cell tower and topographic obstruction are used to improve the prediction of cell phone signal strength. The effect of these factors is evaluated in a multiple regression framework, followed by an analysis of the residuals, providing valuable information for cellular network providers. However, since the residuals show some spatial structure, we therefore analyze the merits of a more suitable method, namely spatial regression. We illustrate the approach using data on cell phone coverage in a hilly section of Erie county, New York. The model should (a) enhance our knowledge of the effect of particular factors on signal strength intensity, and (b) result in improved estimates of RSSI at unknown locations. The latter is important in establishing the effectiveness of automated collision notification (ACN) technology.
