Abstract

The drug Raptiva from Genentech may be effective in treating severe psoriasis, according to a study of 597 patients. The drug was given as a subcutaneous injection once a week for up to six months. Between 22% and 28% of the patients had a 75% or greater improvement in symptoms, depending on the dose. Raptiva prevents the activation of T cells that cause psoriasis.

Abstract

Masoprocol is derived from the plant Larrea divaricata and possesses both antimicrobial and antitumor action. This agent inhibits the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase, which activates the oxidation of double bonds of an unsaturated fatty acid. Its antitumor effects can be diminished by the enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase, which eliminate highly reactive and potentially damaging oxygen free radicals (highly reactive molecules). These findings suggest that free radicals are involved in the actions of masoprocol. The effectiveness of topical masoprocol, which is applied to the skin surface, in treating actinic keratoses, the development of horny, premalignant skin lesions resulting from excessive exposure to sunlight, was assessed. The study included 113 patients with actinic keratoses of the head and neck. They applied topical masoprocol twice daily for 14 to 28 days. Masoprocol reduced the number of actinic keratoses by 71.4 percent. In patients not treated with topical masoprocol, the percentage reduction in actinic keratoses was 4.3 percent. Irritation, indicated by redness and flaking, developed in 61.5 percent of masoprocol-treated patients and 26.7 percent of patients not treated with masoprocol. 17. Norwegian Scabies in a Renal Transplant Patient

Abstract

A 23-year-old renal transplant patient was seen for a ten-month history of mildly pruritic hyperkeratotic skin lesions. Norwegian scabies was suspected and proved to be present by a potassium hydroxide preparation of skin scrapings. With the current widespread use of immunosuppressive agents, physicians should be aware of the increased incidence of this entity.(JAMA 1981;246:2608-2609)
