Psychological Momentum (PM) is a positive or negative dynamics of cognitive, affective, motivational, physiological, and behavioral responses to the perception of movement toward or away from either a desired or an undesired outcome. Such a perception can be fostered by any event or series of events that alters the perceived rate at which one is moving regarding the outcome in question. The history and the context in which such events are embedded determine the occurrence and intensity of PM more determining than the events per se. Therefore, PM is a process of extrapolation that builds upon experiences and extends to anticipated future outcomes (e.g., Hubbard, 2015). PM should not be confused with the “hot/cold hand” phenomenon, which refers to the belief that streaks of success/failure breed future success/failure. The occurrence of streaks is neither sufficient nor necessary to entail a perception of movement toward or away from a final outcome.

International audience; Psychological momentum (PM) is a social phenomenon that has triggered the curiosity of sport psychologists since the early 1980s. From early to recent conceptualizations, PM has been considered as a complex construct, inherently related to variations in sport performance. Over the past 30 years, several models have been proposed to untangle how PM is triggered, which psychological changes are involved in PM experiences, and how PM relates to performance. While linear (causal) models have dominated past research on PM, researchers have recently found that PM can change nonlinearly, depending on the performance history of the competition. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of different PM models that have been proposed in the past to increase insights into the complexity of PM, including the transition from linear causal models to nonlinear dynamical models. Moreover, based on the current state of affairs, perspectives for future research are provided.; Le momentum psychologique (MP) est un phénomène social ayant suscité la curiosité des psychologues du sport depuis les années 1980. Depuis les premières conceptualisations, le MP a été considéré comme un construit complexe, naturellement relié à des changements dans la performance sportive. Au cours des 30 dernières années, plusieurs modèles ont été développés visant à mieux comprendre comment le MP se déclenchait, par quels changements psychologiques il était caractérisé et comment il était relié à la performance. Alors que des modèles (causaux) linéaires ont dominé la recherche passée sur le MP, de récents chercheurs ont fourni une évidence à l’idée que le MP pouvait évoluer de manière non linéaire, dépendant de l’histoire de la performance en compétition. Cette revue systématique a pour but de présenter les différents modèles du MP, incluant la transition entre les modèles linéaires et les modèles dynamiques non linéaires. Des perspectives de recherche futures ont été proposées.

Introduction Progressing or regressing in relation to one’s goal (e.g., victory) may elicit positive or negative dynamics in behaviors and psychological states, called positive and negative psychological momentum (PM). Research has shown that the emergence of PM within competitions can be nonlinear, and is embedded in the ongoing history of events [5,6]. Here, we focus on another dynamical property: Interconnected time scales [7]. Our aim was twofold: (a) Examine athletes’ positive and negative PM over a tournament (long-term), and (b) examine whether the athletes’ long-term PM feeds into the PM dynamics within a competition (short-term). Methods Twenty-two athletes pursued the long-term goal of obtaining 3 points (i.e., winning three head-to-head races on rowing ergometers). Races could be won by taking a 9-second lead on the opponent (short-term goal). One group won the first two races (positive momentum group), whereas the other group lost the first two races (negative momentum group). The third (last) race was manipulated in a way that all participants took a 6-second lead, but then gradually moved towards the defeat. Before the races, perceptions of momentum and self-efficacy (SE) with reference to the long-term goal were measured. During the races exerted efforts were measured continuously, and the perceptions of momentum and SE with reference to the short-term goal were measured at repeated intervals. Results Regarding the long-term goal, perceptions of momentum and SE were higher in the positive momentum group than in the negative momentum group, both before the second (p < .05) and third race (p < .001). Within the third race, exerted efforts, as well as perceptions of momentum and SE, were higher for the positive momentum group than for the negative momentum group (p < .001). Moreover, while moving towards the defeat, perceptions of momentum and SE decreased less abruptly in the positive momentum group (p < .001). Discussion We found that single competition events influence long-term PM, which feed into the short-term PM process. This provides evidence for a connection between long- and short-term PM, and supports the assumption that PM can be considered a dynamical system [4-6]. Moreover, the finding that negative PM is entered less abruptly after successive successful competitions suggests that previous experiences affect the PM attractor landscape.

The instrument was developed on the basis of the literature. A series of four complementary studies was carried out with a total sample of 1306 athletes. In the first study, a preliminary version was developed and its clarity was evaluated. The initial factorial analysis identified a one-factor model with good internal consistency. The second study confirmed the factorial structure of the instrument and showed its partial invariance across genders. The third study demonstrated the temporal stability of the RSRESS. In the fourth study, the expected relationships between the RSRESS and both moral disengagement and affective self-regulatory efficacy were found, supporting the construct validity of the instrument. The RSRESS thus presents satisfactory psychometric properties and constitutes a reliable and valid instrument for developing future research on the role of self-regulatory efficacy in moral issues.

International audience; Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop a computerized instrument to assess eating attitudes and behaviors, the “virtual self-service restaurant” (VSSR), and to test for preliminary evidence of its validity. Improved measures of self-regulation in this area should facilitate the management of individuals with eating disorders, particularly athletes, and the implementation of tailored prevention and intervention programs.Results: This interface assesses the individual's basal metabolism, energy expenditure related to physical activity, global energy expenditure, global energy intake (i.e., difference between energy expenditure and intake), and distribution of food intake over the day. The validity of the VSSR was tested in four populations, and the results indicated satisfactory internal and external validity.Conclusion: This instrument, which shows preliminary evidence of validity and reliability, can be used to promote educational nutrition programs for sedentary and athletic populations.; Objectifs: Le but de cette étude était de développer et valider de manière préliminaire un instrument informatisé pour évaluer les attitudes et les comportements alimentaires, le virtual self-service restaurant (VSSR). L’amélioration des mesures de l’autorégulation des comportements alimentaires devrait permettre de mieux accompagner les individus en général, et les athlètes en particulier, en mettant en œuvre des programmes d’intervention et de prévention adaptés.Résultats: Cette interface permet d’évaluer le métabolisme basal de l’individu, la dépense énergétique liée à l’activité physique, la dépense énergétique globale, l’apport énergétique global (i.e., différence entre les dépenses et les apports énergétiques), et la répartition de l’apport alimentaire au cours de la journée. La validité du self virtuel a été examinée auprès de quatre populations. Les validités interne et externe du VSSR se sont révélées satisfaisantes.Conclusion: Cet instrument qui a démontré des premiers indicateurs de validité et de fiabilité, pourra être utilisé pour promouvoir des programmes d’éducation nutritionnelle auprès de populations sédentaires ou sportives.

International audience; While studies on triggers and outcomes of Psychological Momentum (PM) exist, little is known about the dynamics by which PM emerges and develops over time. Based on video-assisted recalls of PM experiences in table tennis and swimming competitions, this study qualitatively explored the triggering processes, contents, and the development of PM over time. PM was found to be triggered by mechanisms of dissonance, consonance, or fear of not winning. During the PM experience, participants reported a variety of perceptions, affects and emotions, cognitions, and behaviors. PM was found to develop through processes of amplification that sometimes ended with a reduction of efforts when the victory or defeat was perceived as being inevitable. These findings are discussed in light of theories on self-regulation and reactance-helplessness. From a practical standpoint, achievement goal-based strategies are suggested, since mastery-approach goals were found to be endorsed to maintain positive PM and overcome negative PM.

International audience; Introduction et problématique :Le Momentum Psychologique (MP) correspond à une "dynamique positive ou négative des réponses cognitives, affectives, motivationnelles, physiologiques et comportementales (et leurs couplages) à la perception de progression ou d’éloignement vis-à-vis d'une issue appétitive ou aversive"(Gernigon, Briki, & Eykens, 2010, p. 397). Le caractère dynamique du MP suppose notamment que son intensité peut varier au cours de son développement (Adler, 1981). Pourtant, la majorité des travaux ont examiné ce phénomène en se limitant à quelques mesures seulement. Cette recherchevisait donc à examiner la dynamique du MP en se focalisant sur certains de ses contenus affectifs tels que l’anxiété et la confiance en soi (Briki, den Hartigh,Hauw, & Gernigon, 2011) et sur la dynamique de leurs relations. Deux sports, le tennis de table et la natation, ont été investigués en raison des facilités méthodologiques que présente la brièveté d'un set ou d'une course de sprint. De plus, les caractéristiques différentes (décisionnelle vsénergétique) de ces deux sports permettaient d’explorer les particularismes contextuels du MP et de sa dynamique.Méthode :Cinq pongistes hommes (Mage= 22.4 ± 3.4) et quatre nageurs hommes (Mage= 24.3 ± 2.4) de niveau de compétition national ont été volontaires pour participer à cette recherche. Pendant que ces athlètes visionnaient individuellement un(e) de leurs sets (courses) récent(e)s comprenant une expérience de MP positif, ils devaient répondre en continu, à l’aide d’un dispositif informatique (paradigme souris de Vallacher, Nowak, Froehlich, & Rockloff, 2002), à des items uniques d’anxiété cognitive, d’anxiété somatique et de confiance en soi issus du Questionnaire d'Anxiété Compétitive de Martinent, Ferrand, Guillet et Gautheur (2010). La procédure était répétée pour chaque item. Les séries temporelles ainsi crées pour chaque expérience de MP ont ensuite été standardisées sur la base du nombre de points de la série correspondant à la plus courte expérience de MP. Pour chaque sport et pour chaque variable, des analyses d'ajustement de fonction, de fonction dérivée, de corrélation simple, et de corrélation à fenêtre mobile ont été réalisées. Résultats et discussion :Tennis de table.Les tendances linéaires significatives (p< .001) ont rendu compte des plus grandes parts de la variance des anxiétés cognitive et somatique (94% et 98%, respectivement ; tendances descendantes) et de la confiance en soi (88% ; tendance ascendante), supportant les résultats d'une récente recherche montrant le caractère graduel des évolutions de ces variables (Gernigon et al., 2010). Une part non négligeable (5%) et significative (p< .001) de la variance de la confiance en soi a également été expliquée par une tendance quadratique, laquelle soulignait une variation abrupte en début de phase de MP. Ce résultat montre le caractère très réactif au MP de cette variable. Conformément à l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’expérience de momentum contraint l’anxiété compétitive et la confiance en soi à évoluer dans des directions opposées (Gernigon et al., 2010), les analyses corrélationnelles ont révélé une forte relation négative entre ces variables (r< -.89, p< .001). Natation.La variance de l’anxiété cognitive a été principalement (67%) expliquée par une tendance significative linéaire descendante (p< .001). Mais les tendances quadratique et cubique ont aussi expliqué significativement (p< .001) des parts importantes (16% et 17%, respectivement) de la variance de cette variable. Ces tendances non-linéaires reflétaient une diminution abrupte de l'anxiété cognitive au début de la phase de momentum. La majeure partie (47%) de la variance de l’anxiété somatique a été expliquée par une tendance quadratique significative (p< .001) reflétant une diminution suivie d’une augmentation de cette forme d'anxiété. Ce résultat surprenant pourrait être imputable à la notion de tension corporelle incluse dans l'item d'anxiété somatique utilisé, laquelle pouvait être interprétée indifféremment en termes de fatigue et/ou de manifestation de l’anxiété. La variance de la confiance en soi a été principalement (52%) et significativement (p< .001) expliquée par une tendance cubique, ce qui conforte le résultat de l’étude 1 qui montrait le caractère très réactif au MP de cette variable. Mais les tendances linéaire et quadratique ont également rendu compte de manière significative (p< .001) et importante (14% et 21%, respectivement) de la variance de cette variable. Comme en tennis de table, donc, l’anxiété cognitive et la confiance en soi ont globalement diminué et augmenté, respectivement. Elles sont aussi apparues fortement et négativement corrélées (r= -.88, p< .001), confirmant l’hypothèse que l'expérience de momentum oppose leurs trajectoires.Les patrons d’évolution des variables étudiées sont apparus être globalement plus abrupts en natation qu’en tennis de table. Cette différence observée dans la dynamique du MP pourrait être expliquée par des spécificités liées au déroulement des deux sports. Prendre une avanceen course de sprint pourrait s’avérer moins réversible que prendre une avance dans un set de tennis de table, ce qui générerait des attentes de succès plus fortes en natation qu’en tennis de table. Conclusion :Le MP s'avère être un phénomène hautement dynamique qui contraint concomitamment les fluctuations de variables telles que l'anxiété compétitive et la confiance en soi. En outre, sa dynamique semble être fortement dépendante de la nature même de son contexte d'émergence.
