Background: Irisin is a muscle-contraction-induced myokine. In previous studies, it has been related to exercise type, fitness and physical activity; however, evidence is not consistent. Thus, the aim of this study was to research the association between health-related fitness and irisin in young women. Methods: The study was designed as a prospective cross-sectional one. Young, healthy, nonsmoking women were enlisted. The sample comprised 40 overweight (OW) and 40 normal-weight (NW) individuals. The average age was 18.63 ± 0.63 and 18.78 ± 0.73 years, respectively. Components of health-related fitness, metabolic parameters, serum irisin and body composition were analyzed. Results: Statistically significant differences were found in physical tests between NW and OW groups for one-leg standing, hand grip strength, vertical jump, modified push-up, fitness index and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2MAX). There were no differences in concentrations of serum irisin between the groups. We found a positive correlation between irisin and hand grip strength (r = 0.374, p = 0.023). In a multivariate analysis adjusted by body fat, a significant association between irisin and hand grip strength was observed in OW group (β = 0.380, p = 0.026); as well, a positive association between irisin and one-leg standing test in NW group (β = 0.311, p = 0.044) was found. Conclusions: According to our findings, hand grip strength could be linked to irisin concentration in overweight young women.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an increasing health issue. Physical activity (PA) in early stages is a preventive measure in the development of degenerative diseases. It has been documented the association between exercise and leptin and adiponectin concentrations. The objective was to evaluate the effect of a physical activity program (PAP) on serum leptin and adiponectin in teenagers with risk factors for developing T2DM.Experimental-longitudinal study. Teenagers (men and women), with T2DM risk factors, aged 14 to 16 years, participated in a PAP for three months, five days a week, 45 minutes each day. Before and after the program, all anthropometric variables, incluiding leptin and adiponectin, were evaluated.22 adolescents participated in the PAP and they were compared with 22 adolescents from the control group (who did not participate in the PAP). There was a reduction in the serum concentration of leptin in the intervention group (baseline 23 ± 13; after the PAP 14 ± 8, p0.0001), compared with the control group (baseline 18 ± 13, three months follow-up 20 ± 14, p0.520). Also, the adiponectin concentration increased (baseline 10 ± 3, after the PAP 13 ± 4.0, p0.014), compared with the control group (baseline 11 ± 3, 13 ± 4.0 after the PAP p0.032).This study support the efficacy of an aerobic exercise intervention on metabolic markers of adolescents with risk factors for developing diabetes.la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) es un problema de salud cada vez más preocupante. El ejercicio en etapas tempranas es una medida preventiva en el desarrollo de enfermedades crónico-degenerativas. Se ha postulado la asociación entre el ejercicio con las concentraciones de leptina y adiponectina. El objetivo fue evaluar el efecto de un programa de actividad física (AF) sobre la concentración sérica de leptina y adiponectina en adolescentes con factores de riesgo para el desarrollo de DM2.estudio de tipo experimental-longitudinal. Participaron en un programa de AF durante tres meses adolescentes de 14 a 16 años, con factores de riesgo para el desarrollo de diabetes, cinco días a la semana, durante 45 minutos. Antes y después del programa, se evaluó la respuesta de leptina y adiponectina.participaron 22 adolescentes en el programa y se compararon con 22 adolescentes del grupo control. Las cifras de leptina disminuyeron en el grupo de intervención: basal 23 ± 13, después del programa 14 ± 8, p0.001; grupo control: basal 18 ± 13, seguimiento a tres meses 20 ± 14, p0.520. Asimismo, incrementaron las cifras de adiponectina: basal 10 ± 3, después del programa 13 ± 4.0, p0.014; grupo control: basal 11 ± 3, post ejercicio 13 ± 4.0, p0.032.nuestros resultados apoyan la eficacia de una intervención con ejercicio aeróbico sobre las características en un grupo minoritario de adolescentes con factores de riesgo para desarrollar diabetes.

Objective. To examine different health outcomes that are associated with specific lifestyle and genetic factors. Materials and methods. From March 2004 to April 2006, a sample of employees from three different health and academic institutions, as well as their family members, were enrolled in the study after providing informed consent. At baseline and follow-up (2010-2013), participants completed a self-administered questionnaire, a physical examination, and provided blood samples. Results. A total of 10 729 participants aged 6 to 94 years were recruited at baseline. Of these, 70% were females, and 50% were from the Mexican Social Security Institute. Nearly 42% of the adults in the sample were overweight, while 20% were obese. Conclusion. Our study can offer new insights into disease mechanisms and prevention through the analysis of risk factor information in a large sample of Mexicans.

Background Many factors, such as heredity, ethnicity, nutrition and other lifestyle factors, have been related to bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. Additionally, bone mass has been significantly associated with decreased estrogen levels. However, fewstudies have been conducted on premenopausal women. The present study was designed to estimate the relationship between low bone mineral density and levels of serum estradiol and lifestyle factors in premenopausal Mexican women. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in 270 women between 40 and 48 years of age who participate in the Health Workers Cohort Study. Information on socio-demographic and lifestyle factors were obtained through a self-administered questionnaire. Body mass index and serum estradiol were measured with standard procedures; bone mineral density was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Multiple linear and logistic regression models were computed to evaluate the relationship between low bone mineral density and levels of serum estradiol and lifestyle factors. Results In linear regression analysis levels of estradiol, body mass index, physical activity, and vitamin D intake were positively related to bone mineral density. Age, cigarette smoking and caffeine were inversely associated with BMD. Finally, the odds of low bone mineral density increase significantly when the premenopausal women had low levels of serum estradiol (OR = 4.93, 95 % CI: 2.14, 11.37). Conclusion These data support that low serum estradiol, advancing age, lower physical activity, lower vitamin D intake, cigarette smoking, and higher amount of caffeine intake are linked to low bone mineral density in premenopausal Mexican women.

The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a precursor of diabetes. Physical activity (PA) improves endothelial dysfunction and may benefit patients with MetS.Aims. To evaluate the effect of a physical activity (PA) program on markers of endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress in adolescents with (MetS).Methods. We carried out a cohort study of 38 adolescents with and without MetS (18 females and 20 males). All participants completed a 3-month PA program. All variables of the MetS as well as markers of endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress tests were evaluated.Results. Females with and without MetS showed significant differences for almost all components of the MetS, whereas males were significantly different in half of the components. After the PA program, components of the MetS were not different from baseline values except for HDL-C levels. Some baseline endothelial dysfunction markers were significantly different among adolescents with and without MetS; however, after the PA program, most of these markers significantly improved in subjects with and without MetS.Conclusion. PA improves the markers of endothelial dysfunction in adolescents with MetS although other changes in the components of the MetS were not observed. Perhaps the benefits of PA on all components of MetS would appear after a PA program with a longer duration.

Objective To examine the relationship between sweetened beverage consumption and components of the metabolic syndrome in a Mexican population. Design We performed a cross-sectional analysis of data from selected adults participating in the baseline assessment of the Health Workers Cohort Study. Information on participants’ sociodemographic characteristics, dietary patterns and physical activity were collected via self-administered questionnaires. Sweetened beverage consumption was evaluated through a validated semi-quantitative FFQ. Anthropometric and clinical measures were assessed with standardized procedures. The definition of metabolic syndrome was determined using criteria from the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III. The associations of interest were evaluated by means of linear and logistic regression models. Setting The Mexican states of Morelos and Mexico. Subjects A total of 5240 individuals aged 20 to 70 years (mean 39·4 ( sd 11·5) years) were evaluated. Results Overweight/obesity prevalence was 56·6 %. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in this sample was 26·6 %. We found that for each additional daily sweetened beverage serving consumed, participants experienced an average increase of 0·49 mmol/l in TAG and a decrease in HDL cholesterol of 0·31 mmol/l. Subjects consuming more than two servings of sweetened beverages daily were at 2·0 times greater risk of metabolic syndrome than those who did not consume sweetened beverages. We also observed that higher sweetened beverage consumption increased the risk of all components of the metabolic syndrome. Conclusions Our data support the hypothesis that sweetened beverage consumption increases the risk of metabolic syndrome in Mexican adults, possibly by providing excess energy and large amounts of rapidly absorbable sugars.

Background/Aims: It was the aim of this study to evaluate the relationships between sweetened beverage (SB) consumption and the following indicators of overweight/fatness among Mexican adolescents: body mass index, body composition and body fat distribution. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of data from adolescents participating in the baseline assessment of the Health Workers Cohort Study. Information on sociodemographic conditions, sexual maturation, dietary patterns and physical activity was collected via self-administered questionnaires. SB consumption was evaluated through a validated semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Anthropometric measures were assessed with standardized procedures. The associations of interest were evaluated by means of multivariate regression and logistic regression models. Results: A total of 1,055 adolescents, 10–19 years old (mean age 14.5 ± 2.5 years), were evaluated. The overweight/obesity prevalence was 31.6% among girls and 31.9% among boys. We found that for each additional SB serving consumed daily, the subject’s body mass index increased by on average 0.33 (p < 0.001). Subjects consuming 3 daily servings of SB face a 2.1 times greater risk of proportionally excess body fat than those who consume less than 1 SB a day. Conclusions: Our data support the hypothesis that the consumption of SB increases the risk of overweight and/or obesity and encourages excess body fat and central obesity in Mexican adolescents.

Introduction The prevalence of obesity and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among children and adolescents is rising. Thyroid function has been associated with insulin resistance. There is scarce information about how thyroid function could be related with cardiovascular risk or glucose homeostasis in adolescent. Aim To analyze how thyroid function is associated with insulin resistance and another cardiovascular risk factors in healthy adolescents with risk factors to develop diabetes. Methods A prospective cross-sectional analysis was carried out on euthyroid, adolescents. considered at high risk to develop Type 2 diabetes. Fasting blood samples were obtained. Thyroid function test and another cardiometabolic parameters were assessed. A 75 grams oral glucose tolerance test was performed to calculate insulin resistance. Results One hundred adolescents were evaluated. The mean age was 15.9 ± 0.8 years, There is a negative correlation between Fasting insulin, post glucose load insulin and HOMA IR. There were no correlation with Matsuda index. We could not found any correlation with TSH values. Conclusions We found a correlation between fasting insulin, HOMA IR and serum thyroid hormones, we did not find any relation with serum TSH. In euthyroid adolescents with risk factors to develop diabetes.

A sample of 585 healthy subjects 14 years and older was studied to estimate the status of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and its correlation with parathyroid hormone in healthy Mexicans. In 43.6 % of the sample, levels of vitamin D were below 20 ng/mL and showed an inverse relationship with parathyroid hormone (PTH; p 0.01).The purpose of the present study was to estimate the status of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and its correlation with parathyroid hormone in healthy Mexicans.A cross-sectional study of 585 healthy subjects 14 years and older was carried out. A questionnaire including all relevant demographics, medical history, and lifestyle factors was applied by trained interviewers. Morning fasting blood was collected in all subjects for estimation of 25(OH)D using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and PTH hormone-intact molecule by RIA.Of the group of 585 subjects, 54.1 % were women; the sample was divided in three age groups (14-29, 30-50, and51). Only 9.6 % of the total sample had levels of 25(OH)D above 30 ng/mL; 46.8 % were between 20 and 29 ng/mL, and 43.6 % were below 20 ng/mL. Regarding PTH, a three-phase model was identified using regression smoothing scatterplot (LOESS), with two thresholds of 25(OH)D of 19 and 29 ng/mL. Phase 1 (25(OH)D19 ng/mL) showed an inverse relationship with PTH (p 0.01); phases 2 and 3 showed no significant relationship.Our results show that 43.6 % of the Mexicans in this study have deficient concentration levels of vitamin D. The cutoff point of 20 ng/mL of 25(OH)D established by the Institute of Medicine has a biological and statistically significant relationship with PTH levels in the Mexican population, independently of principal confounding factors. Like many other countries, Mexico could be included in the global epidemic of hypovitaminosis D.

The aim of this study was to compare international reference values (RV) for tibial and radial speed of sound (SoS) assessed by quantitative ultrasound (QUS) in pediatric populations. These values were compared by age and country of origin in a systematic review with meta-analysis from studies published on QUS (Sunlight Omnisense). A search was carried out in electronic databases. Nine studies with 6963 patients were included in the meta-analysis. For the newborn populations, 3 studies (from Italy, Portugal, and Israel) were used. These studies included subjects with 27-42 wk gestational age. The mean difference (Portugal-Israel) was found to be 23.62 m/s [95% confidence interval [CI] 6.29, 40.95]. Additionally, no difference was found between Italy-Portugal (p = 0.69), or Italy-Israel (p = 0.28). In pediatric populations, we compared 8 studies from Canada, Mexico, Israel, Greece, Portugal, and Turkey. No significant differences found for SoS RV between Israel-Turkey, Israel-Greece, or Israel-Canada (p 0.05). Significant differences were found in Mexico-Israel -105.29 m/s (95% CI -140.05, -70.54) (p 0.001); Mexico-Portugal -115.14 m/s (95% CI -164.86, -65.42) (p 0.001); Mexico-Greece: -239.14 m/s (95% CI -267.67, -210.62) (p 0.001); Mexico-Turkey: -115.14 m/s (95% CI -164.86, -65.42) (p 0.001); Mexico-Canada: -113.51 m/s (95% CI -140.25, -86.77) (p 0.001).This study demonstrates that there are differences in SoS-RV obtained by tibial and radial QUS in pediatric populations between Mexico and other countries (Israel, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, and Canada).

Osteoporosis-related fractures represent a major health problem. Although spine and hip bone densitometry is the gold standard to assess bone density, this test is not always accesible. The purpose of this study was to describe two options to assess the risk of fracture due to osteoporosis in post-menopausal women assigned to a primary care unit where bone densitometry is not available.A cross-sectional study was conducted in 332 post-menopausal women without diagnosis or treatment for osteoporosis, attending regularly to a primary care unit. A heel bone peripheral densitometry, physical exam and medical history were performed. The assessment of fracture risk was carried out using the FRAX™ method.Mean age was 60 ± 8.7 years and body mass index was 28.68 ± 4.24. According to the heel bone peripheral densitometry, 19 (5.7 %) women had osteoporosis (T-score less than or equal to -2.5), 171 (51.8 %) had osteopenia (T-score between -2.5 and less than or equal to -1) and 141 (42.5 %) had normal bone mineral density. According to the FRAX method, 13 (3.9 %) had an increased risk of osteoporotic fracture in a 10-year period and 40 (12 %) of hip fracture.There was low concordance in the 10-year risk for major osteoporotic fracture and hip fracture assessed with both the FRAX™ and the peripheral bone densitometry methods.INTRODUCCIÓN: las fracturas relacionadas con la osteoporosis son un problema de salud. Aunque la densitometría ósea de columna y cadera es el estándar para evaluar la densidad ósea, no siempre es accesible. El objetivo de este estudio fue describir dos alternativas a la densitometría ósea para evaluar el riesgo de fractura por osteoporosis en mujeres posmenopáusicas. MÉTODOS: estudio transversal de 332 mujeres posmenopáusicas sin diagnóstico o tratamiento de osteoporosis, que asistían regularmente a una unidad de primer nivel. Se realizó densitometría periférica de talón, examen físico e historia médica. La evaluación del riesgo de fractura se llevó a cabo mediante FRAXTM.la edad media fue de 60 ± 8.7 años y el índice de masa corporal de 28.68 ± 4.24. Según la densitometría periférica de talón, mujeres 19 (5.7 %) tenían osteoporosis (T-score menor de –2.5), 171 (51.8 %) osteopenia (T-score entre –2.5 y menos de –1) y 141 (42.5 %) densidad mineral ósea normal. Según el método FRAX, 13 (3.9 %) tenían riesgo aumentado de fractura osteoporótica en un periodo de 10 años y 40 (12 %) de fractura de cadera.la prevalencia de riesgo para osteoporosis es diferente de acuerdo con el método que se utilice para medirlo. La concordancia entre los dos métodos fue baja.

Background The prevalence of hyperuricemia has doubled worldwide during the last few decades. The substantial increase in sweetened beverage (SB) consumption has also coincided with the secular trend of hyperuricemia. Recent studies do show that the consumption of SB can induce hyperuricemia. However, the association between SB and hyperuricemia remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between SB consumption and levels of uric acid in Mexican adults. Methods We performed a cross-sectional analysis of data from selected adults participating in the baseline assessment of the Health Workers Cohort Study. A total of 6,705 participants of both sexes between ages 18 and 70 years were included. SB intake was estimated using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Biochemical and anthropometric information was collected using standard procedures. Hyperuricemia was defined as uric acid levels ≥ 7.0 mg/dL in men and ≥ 5.8 mg/dL in women. The association of interest was assessed by multiple logistic regression models. Results The odds ratios (OR) for hyperuricemia in men who consume 0.5-1 SB/day was 1.59 (95% CI; 1.05-2.40) and 2.29 (95% CI; 1.55-3.38) for those who consume ≥3 SB/day when compared to men who consume less than half a SB/day. In women, the OR for hyperuricemia for those who consume >1.0

The purpose of this study was to assess the bone speed of sound (SoS) through lifetime of a large Mexican population sample by determining the SoS from the radius and tibia using quantitative ultrasound (QUS). This is a cross-sectional evaluation of participants in the Mexican Health Workers Cohort Study. QUS measurements were performed using Sunlight Omnisense 8000P; Z- and T-scores were calculated for both sexes at the distal third of the radius and midshaft tibia, both on the nondominant side. Background Recent evidence suggests that serum uric acid (SUA) can be an inexpensive and easy-to-obtain indicator of cardiovascular risk (CR). This is especially important in developing countries with high prevalence of cardiovascular disease. We examined the association between SUA levels and 10-year global CR among university workers from the State of Mexico, Mexico. Methods A case–control study nested within a cohort was conducted between 2004 and 2006. Anthropometric measures, lifestyle variables, family background and CR factors were assessed. The analysis estimated odds ratios using conditional logistic regression. Results The study included 319 cases with CR and 638 controls. Subjects in the upper tertile of SUA had 48.0% higher odds of having an elevated CR than those in the lower tertile (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.04 - 2.10) in the crude analysis, but the association was non-significant when adjusting for other covariates. Among physically inactive individuals, being in the third tertile of SUA doubled the odds of high CR, compared with those who perform physical activity three or more hours per week being in the first tertile of SUA (OR = 2.35, 95% CI: 1.24 - 4.45). Conclusion Serum concentration of uric acid is associated with 10-year global CR among individuals with high levels of physical inactivity.

Cardiovascular disease is originated in the vascular endothelium, which controls the homeostasis and the filtration and diffusion of molecules from blood to the tissues. The classical cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) act directly on the endothelium through an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species, promoting an endothelial activation mediated by the expression of adhesion and proinflammatory molecules, which lead to endothelial dysfunction, the progression of the atherosclerotic plaque, and the onset of cardiovascular disease. The objective of this study was to analyze the association of superoxide dismutase, catalase, gluthatione peroxidase, and lipoperoxidation with fibrinogen, interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, and vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1 in subjects with cardiovascular risk (CVR) and CRF. This was a cross-sectional study of 114 individuals; oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase, catalase, gluthatione peroxidase, and lipoperoxidation) and inflammatory (fibrinogen, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, and VCAM-1) biomarkers were measured; a CVR score (Framingham) and its CRF were taken into consideration to classify the participants. Twenty-nine subjects out of a total of 114 had high CVR. Smokers and subjects with diabetes (43 subjects) were excluded from the low CVR group. Significant decreases in lipoperoxidation, IL-6, and VCAM-1 and an increase in SOD were found in the high CVR group (P ≤ 0.05). Individual analysis of each CRF in the 114 subjects revealed a different pattern in the biomarkers' statistical differences. Concluding that the biomarkers show statistical differences in each CRF, especially IL-6, VCAM-1, and SOD; therefore, these are highly recommended to be used as biomarkers of the oxidative stress and inflammatory status in CVR.

Occult chronic kidney disease (OCKD) and cardiovascular risk (CVR) share risk factors that trigger chronic degenerative diseases. Aim. To assess the association of OCKD with CVR and its risk factors in a sample of university workers. Material and methods. This is a crosssectional study. From 89 volunteers the lipid profile, glucose, urea, creatinine and uric acid were obtained from blood as well as anthropometric measures and blood pressure. They were classified by their CVR calculated by the Framingham equation, into the groups: with-CVR and without-CVR; and by their glomerular filtration rate (GFR) into: with-OCKD and without-OCKD. Then into subgroups of each CVR factor (CVRF): sex, smoking, diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension. The statistical differences between groups (p 0.05) and the correlation between CVR and GFR and the odds ratio (OR) for each CVRF were determined. Results. A negative correlation between the OCKD and the CVR was obtained for men (p = - 0.743, p = 0.000) and women (p = - 0.874, p = 0.000). The overall prevalence of hypertension was 23.6% (OR = 15.43 for CVR, 95% CI, 4.04 - 58.95, OR = 14.75 for OCKD, 95% CI 2.76 - 78.23) and older than 50 years of 33.7% (OR for CVR = 20.37, 95% CI, 6.25 - 66.43). Conclusions. OCKD is strongly associated with the CVR. Furthermore, each CVRF impacts in different range and level to the development of cardiovascular disease and kidney failure.

Determine the difference between the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel (ATPIII) definition of the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome (MS) in Mexican adolescents and that by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).We conducted a cross-sectional study of 575 adolescents aged 14 to 16 years using the student's t test, chi square and Spearman correlation.The prevalence of MS was higher by ATPIII (18.6%) than by IDF (8.2%) (p0.001) and there was a concordance of 41.1%.There is a statistical difference in the prevalence of MS depending on the definition.

Objective. To examine the associations of dietary glycemic index (GI) and dietary glycemic load (GL) with blood lipid concentrations and coronary heart disease (CHD) in nondiabetic participants in the Health Worker Cohort Study (HWCS).Materials and Methods. A cross-sectional analysis was performed, using data from adults who participated in the HWCS baseline assessment. We collected information on participants' socio-demographic conditions, dietary patterns and physical activity via self-administered questionnaires. Dietary GI and dietary GL were measured using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Anthropometric and clinical measurements were assessed with standardized procedures. CHD risk was estimated according to the sex-specific Framingham prediction algorithms.Results. IIn the 5,830 individuals aged 20 to 70 who were evaluated, dietary GI and GL were significantly associated with HDL-C, LDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, and triglycerides serum levels. Subjects with high dietary GI have a relative risk of 1.56 (CI 95%; 1.13–2.14), and those with high dietary GL have a relative risk of 2.64 (CI 95%; 1.15–6.58) of having an elevated CHD risk than those who had low dietary GI and GL.Conclusions. Our results suggest that high dietary GI and dietary GL could have an unfavorable effect on serum lipid levels, which are in turn associated with a higher CHD risk.

OBJETIVO. Determinar la diferencia entre las definiciones del National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel (ATPIII) y de la International Diabetes Federation (IDF) para síndrome metabólico (SM) en adolescentes mexicanos. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS. Estudio transversal en 575 adolescentes de 14 a 16 años. Se utilizaron pruebas t de Student, ji cuadrada y correlación de Spearman. RESULTADOS. La prevalencia de SM fue mayor por ATPIII (18.6%) versus IDF (8.2%) (p0.001), con 41.1% de concordancia. CONCLUSIONES. Existe una diferencia estadística de la prevalencia del SM en adolescentes mexicanos entre las dos definiciones.

To report the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) among children and adolescents living in central Mexico, and its association with body mass index (BMI).In a sample of 1366 subjects from 7 to 24-years-old, a self-administered questionnaire was used to determined demographic characteristics. The definition of pediatric MS was determined using analogous criteria to Adult Treatment Panel III (ATPIII) asor = 3 of the following: concentration of triglyceridesor = 100 mg/dL, HDL cholesterol45 mg/dL for males and50 mg/dL for females, waist circumferenceor = 75th percentile (sex specific), glucose concentrationor = 110 to126 mg/dL, and systolic or diastolic blood pressureor = 90th percentile (age, height, and sex specific).Most of the sample was in the 10-14- (32.4%) and the 15-19-year (35.4%) age groups, mostly females (57%), and 31% of this young sample was overweight (mean BMI = 21.6 kg/m2). About 1 in every 5 participants had full criteria for MS (19.2%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 16.4-22.1 among females, and 20.2%, 95% CI: 17.1-23.7 among males), and only 1 in every 10 was free of any MS component. The most common component was a low HDL level, observed in 85.4% of the sample. Unfavorable fat distribution, as indicated by a large waist circumference, was present in 27.9% of the sample. About 66% of those 10-14-year-olds with a large BMI were positive for MS.MS and overweight are major problems for youth in Mexico. Immediate and comprehensive actions at home and schools are needed if Mexico wants to avoid the heavy burden that this disorder will have for its population in the near future.

Results: Mean serum (25OHD) level was 27.2 12.2 ng/ml and mean BMI was 26.9 5.2 kg/m. Age, weight, height and BMI were not correlated to serum (25OHD). Age, weight, height, BMI and serum (25OHD) were not correlated to TBS. Conclusion: These results suggest that serum (25OHD) is not a determinant of TBS in postmenopausal women. Background In the Mexican population metabolic syndrome (MS) is highly prevalent. It is well documented that regular physical activity (PA) prevents coronary diseases, type 2 diabetes and MS. Most studies of PA have focused on moderate-vigorous leisure-time activity, because it involves higher energy expenditures, increase physical fitness, and decrease the risk of MS. However, for most people it is difficult to get a significant amount of PA from only moderately-vigorous leisure activity, so workplace activity may be an option for working populations, because, although may not be as vigorous in terms of cardio-respiratory efforts, it comprises a considerable proportion of the total daily activity with important energy expenditure. Since studies have also documented that different types and intensity of daily PA, including low-intensity, seem to confer important health benefits such as prevent MS, we sought to assess the impact of different amounts of leisure-time and workplace activities, including low-intensity level on MS prevention, in a sample of urban Mexican adults. Methods The study population consisted of 5118 employees and their relatives, aged 20 to 70 years, who were enrolled in the baseline evaluation of a cohort study. MS was assessed according to the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program, ATP III and physical activity with a validated self-administered questionnaire. Associations between physical activity and MS risk were assessed with multivariate logistic regression models. Results The prevalence of the components of MS in the study population were: high glucose levels 14.2%, high triglycerides 40.9%, high blood pressure 20.4%, greater than healthful waist circumference 43.2% and low-high density lipoprotein 76.9%. The prevalence of MS was 24.4%; 25.3% in men and 21.8% in women. MS risk was reduced among men (OR 0.72; 95%CI 0.57–0.95) and women (OR 0.78; 95%CI 0.64–0.94) who reported an amount of ≥30 minutes/day of leisure-time activity, and among women who reported an amount of ≥3 hours/day of workplace activity (OR 0.75; 95%CI 0.59–0.96). Conclusion Our results indicate that both leisure-time and workplace activity at different intensity levels, including low-intensity significantly reduce the risk of MS. This finding highlights the need for more recommendations regarding the specific amount and intensity of leisure-time and workplace activity needed to prevent MS.
