The recent expansion of municipality limits has resulted in an increase in the wildland-urban interface, causing fires in the wildlands to potentially encroach and enter urban centers. This paper proposes a fire-risk modeling framework within a climate resiliency context. The study uses large-scale geospatial datasets in combination with the analytical hierarchy process. Using various high-resolution-detailed datasets, an extensive list of variables was utilized to develop a novel fire-risk model. To support the goal of creating a climate-resilient urban municipality, an ecological vulnerability classification map was constructed to identify developable areas and areas under preservation. Regarding creating awareness for climate adaptation and zone, a brief discussion on the role of each stakeholder is provided. The discussion covers strategies for fire prevention and mitigation in high-risk areas/zones, as well as establishing several cornerstones for strategic planning and action to strengthen climate resilience of urban communities. Characterizing seedling stands with respect to their species proportions and co-occurring vegetation is important for monitoring the desired development of the forest stand. Related inventory information has traditionally been collected with costly field surveys and National Forest Inventory (NFI)-based models. Here, we present a novel fusion approach to combine remote sensing (RS)-based models and NFI-based models to predict seedling stand characteristics, i.e., height, density, and tending needs. We used the best linear unbiased predictor for the fusion of the NFI- and RS-based models. The NFI-based models were derived using NFI sample plots and stand features. The RS-based models were derived using airborne laser scanning and color-infrared images and separate field-measured data. NFI-based models were found to be rather unreliable (RMSE = 65%-115% for stem density and 59%-78% for height), but they were always available without the need for any additional RS data. RS- based models provided an RMSE of 41%-92% for stem density and 26%-45% for height. The fusion procedure used at the prediction stage consistently increased the accuracy of all variables of interest, but the improvements were minor. In addition, we classified the tending need in seedling stands if the height of the coniferous tree was less than 1 m compared to broadleaved trees. If we simulate the decision-making situation of tending needs, we can predict tending needs (91% user accuracy) fairly well for a stand. The accuracy of two--or three-dimensional hydraulic modelling of river flow depends significantly on a realistic description of river channel and floodplain geometries in the form of a continuous, seamless topobathymetry digital elevation model (TB-DEM). However, bathymetric information for most rivers is not available in ready-to-use digital data format. The existing methods of generating TB-DEMs require access to raw data and ground measurements to some extent. This study proposed a simple superposition-based approach, comprising geographic information system-based interpolation and geoprocessing techniques to generate a seamless elevation model using topography and bathymetry from secondary data sources, including crowdsourcing. TB-DEM was generated for the St. Lawrence River and Ottawa River upstream of Montreal in Quebec. The upland topography was unaffected by the superpositioning process, whereas the interpolated bathymetry showed significant positive linear associations with the reference elevation data. The vertical accuracy of the bathymetry digital elevation model was 1.43 m in root-mean-squared error. The Gulf Coastal states region of United States is prone to the highest national frequency of both severe weather and climate problems accompanied by economic losses (e.g., severe convection, flooding, tropical cyclones, ice storms etc.,). A GIS/Remote Sensing framework is necessary to properly understand physical processes, investigate cause and affect relationships and develop conceptual models of the behavior of environmental systems. Our goals included focusing on the environmental effects and impacts of heavy rains and flash flooding and finally to produce a prototype GIS/RS Environmental Risk Assessment System (ERAISA) for the region of interest. We selected oThe historic Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi flood activity during May 8-10th, 1995o as our study case. The NCAR/Penn State Mesoscale model (MM5) is used to study the effects of warm sea surface temperature anomalies, sea surface pressure and winds on the precipitation characteristics of this event. Mesoscale model simulations are used to forecast and better understand the physics associated with the flood event. Each component is modified to accommodate the detailed study. For the preliminary model run, a doubly nested domain centered over the Central Gulf of Mexico with grid spacing of 90 km and 30 km is employed. MM5 is run for each 6 hr period, from the initial storm development--May 8th and through May 10th. NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and synoptic data are used for constructing the initial and boundary conditions. The model simulations are compared with Radar data for further comparisons and validations. An increasing number of historians and sociologists have theorized empires as a series of interlocking networks of social and political interactions. Less attention has been paid to how digital techniques can be deployed to study the structure of those networks, their geospatial context, or their visualization, especially in the construction of maps. Advances in digital gazetteers, social network analysis (SNA) software, and historical geographic information systems (HIGS) are fundamentally altering this paradigm, enabling the discovery, modeling, and visualization of complex geospatial networks. Through a study of the Hellenistic Attalid Kingdom in Anatolia (282-133 B. Mapping of fossil sites represents an important aspect of palaeontology, because the data collected are required for interpreting the taphonomic and depositional history of the site, as well as the palaeoecology and behavior of the organisms. Methods for mapping and documenting certain vertebrate fossil sites, such as trackways, have drastically changed in recent years, with the integrated technologies of photogrammetry, laser scanning, and geographic information systems becoming standard practice, and providing digital, three-dimensional, and georeferenced data for analyses. Contrasting this technological revolution, the methods for mapping vertebrate bone accumulations, such as bonebeds, have changed little in recent decades, and are largely limited to two dimensions, are non-georeferenced, and produce static maps. Here, we present a novel test case in the mapping of two ceratopsid (Dinosauria: Ornithischia) monodominant bonebeds (mass death assemblages) that are documented digitally, fully georeferenced, and in three dimensions, using a combination of high-resolution (at centimetre-scale) global positioning system, photogrammetry, and geographic information systems. Importantly, accompanying spatial data (i.e., size and orientation) are collected in the field in the traditional manner and directly compared with values calculated from the digital map. Parameters describing bone length and orientation exported from the digital map are largely reflective of measured field data, with both size and orientation distributions being statistically indistinguishable, but with disproportionate error for elements smaller than 10 cm. Protocols and methods tested here will hopefully add to the discussion about the future of fossil bonebed mapping, specifically incorporating digital, three-dimensional, and fully georeferenced data into a powerful analytical tool. Les methodes utilisees pour cartographier et documenter certains sites de fossiles de vertebres, tels que des empreintes de pas, ont considerablement evolue ces dernieres annees, l'integration de techniques comme la photogrammetrie, le balayage laser et les systemes d'information geographique, qui fournit des donnees numeriques tridimensionnelles georeferencees pour analyse, etant devenue normalisee. Nous presentons un nouveau cas d'essai consistant en la cartographie de deux lits d'ossements (assemblages de mortalite de masse) monodominants de ceratopsides (dinosaures : ornithischiens) documentes numeriquement, entierement georeferences et en trois dimensions, qui fait appel a une combinaison de systeme mondial de positionnement de haute resolution (echelle centimetrique), de photogrammetrie et de systemes d'information geographique. Des donnees spatiales associees (c.-a-d., taille, orientation) sont recueillies sur le terrain de maniere traditionnelle et comparees directement aux valeurs calculees a partir de la carte numerique. Suitability maps for managed aquifer recharge (MAR) sites hold a strong potential for integration into sustainable groundwater management plans. An uprising method to identify sites suitable for MAR implementation is geographic information system (GIS)-based multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). There are no guidelines or a common understanding on how suitability mapping should be conducted, and there is considerable variability as to what factors are assessed and how they are weighted. To increase knowledge on GIS-MCDA, a database has been built based on 63 studies applying GIS-MCDA in the context of MAR site selection. Information on the criteria, assigned weights, and methodologies has been retrieved from the documents. Statistical analysis of the database depicts the current state of art for suitability mapping methodologies as well as specific information for the different recharge methods. We further incorporated the compiled information into a web-based query tool that makes the information easily accessible and the utilization of the database more user friendly. This review as well as the created web-tool will help planners of MAR sites to engage in the MCDA in a more structured way by referring to previously conducted studies and by finding information suitable for their specific project. The application potential of suitability maps is discussed along with the shortcomings of this methodology. Using geographic information system (GIS) tools for dendrochronological purposes offers an excellent opportunity to develop better growth ring analyses, especially when dealing with tropical forests where growth ring analysis technics are seemingly complex and time-consuming. In this study, two different approaches for ring width measurements were compared using the GIS application ArcMap for increment core and wood stick sampling simulations. Results based on two tropical tree species (Milicia excelsa (Welw.) C.C. Berg and Pericopsis elata (Harms) Meeuwen) showed no statistical differences between the two approaches tested. Nevertheless, series of measures obtained with both approaches do not totally correspond at a 0.05 mm threshold with Bland-Altman's graphic technics. Overall, statistical analyses of chronologies from the different series favor implementation of the increment core approach while using a mosaic of digital images of the whole radial section of the wood disk. Based on the methods and approaches used here, it would be worth developing diametric and areal growth estimation technics for disk type samples. Customer-oriented production as a sawmill strategy requires up-to-date information on the available raw material resources. Bucking is a process in which the tree stem is divided into products based on the roundwood user's needs regarding products and their quality and dimensions. Optimization methods are employed in bucking to recover the highest value of the stem for a given product price matrix and requested length-diameter distribution. A method is presented here for assessing the value of harvestable timber stands based on their product yield. Airborne laser scanning, multispectral imagery, and field plots were used to produce timber statistics for a grid covering the target area. The statistics for the plots were generated from this grid. The value of the estimated tree list was assessed using a bucking-to-value simulator together with a stem quality database. Different product yield simulations in terms of volumes, timber assortment recoveries, wood paying capabilities (WPC) and value estimations based on the presented method, and extensive field measurements were compared. As a conclusion, this method can estimate WPC for pulpwood and sawlogs with root mean squared errors of 32.7% and 38.5%, respectively, relative to extensive field measurements. Le tronconnage est un processus qui consiste a diviser la tige en plusieurs produits en fonction des besoins de la clientele en bois rond selon la qualite et les dimensions des produits demandes. Des approches d'optimisation sont utilisees pour le tronconnage afin de recuperer la plus grande valeur des tiges pour une matrice donnee de prix et de produits et pour une distribution de longueurs et de diametres demandee. La methode qui est presentee ici permet d'evaluer la valeur des bois sur pied recoltables sur la base du rendement en produits. Le balayage laser aeroporte, l'imagerie multispectrale et les parcelles de terrain ont ete utilises pour produire des statistiques au sujet du bois pour une grille couvrant la zone d'etude. Les statistiques pour les parcelles ont ete generees a partir de la grille. La valeur de la liste estimee des arbres a ete evaluee grace a un simulateur de valeur du tronconnage ainsi qu'a partir d'une base de donnees de la qualite des tiges. Differentes simulations de rendement des produits ont ete comparees en termes de volumes, de recuperations des categories de bois usines, de capacite a payer le bois (CPB) et d'estimations de la valeur sur la base de la methode presentee et des mesures detaillees effectuees sur le terrain. En guise de conclusion, cette methode permet d'estimer la CPB pour le bois a pate et le bois de sciage avec une erreur quadratique moyenne respective de 32,7 et 38,5 % selon les mesures detaillees prises sur le terrain. Boreal felt lichen [Erioderma pedicellatum (Hue) P.M. Jorg. (1972)] occurs on mainland Nova Scotia as well as Cape Breton, growing almost entirely on balsam fir [Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.] in wet coastal forests. A Geographical Information System (GIS) based predictive model for E. pedicellatum habitat in Nova Scotia has facilitated surveys and guided conservation. We used this model to examine the relationship between presence of E. pedicellatum and forest structure (tree DBH, height, age, and crown closure, inter-tree distance, basal area of live and dead trees, and percent cover of shrubs, herbs, Sphagnum spp., and other mosses), and site conditions (topographic position, slope, aspect, and drainage) as well as the presence of lichen indicator species. Erioderma pedicellatum sites had significantly older trees, higher density of live trees, lower crown closure, lower basal area of live Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton, Sterns & Poggenb., lower basal area of live trees, higher basal area of dead trees, higher Sphagnum spp. cover, and lower shrub cover than unoccupied habitat. Erioderma pedicellatum sites were significantly less well drained and occurred on steeper slopes with a north or east aspect. Four macrolichens (Coccocarpia palmicola, Platismatia norvegica, Lobaria scrobiculata, and Sphaerophorus globosus) occurred at a significantly higher frequency at E. pedicellatum sites. Availability of all information in a single platform like geographic information system (GIS) has the ability to significantly improve the efficiency and accuracy of developing the execution plan. In the present study, a GIS-based location-based planning methodology is proposed for highway construction projects in hilly terrain. To demonstrate the capabilities of GIS, a location-based plan was developed for a highway project being constructed in hilly terrain. The study concludes that GIS can be utilized as a standalone system for developing a comprehensive location-based plan for highway construction projects in hilly terrain. Dans cette etude, une methodologie de planification fondee sur l'emplacement utilisant un SIG est proposee pour des projets de construction de route situee dans un relief vallonne. Road traffic safety is a social issue of widespread concern. It is important for traffic managers to understand the distribution patterns of road traffic accidents. To this end, this study examines the spatial and temporal patterns of road traffic accidents from both accident frequency and accident severity perspectives. Road traffic accident data from 2016 to 2018 in Harbin, China, were used for the analysis. First, the spatial localization of accidents was completed using geocoding, and the localized accident data were classified by season. Then, density analysis was performed both with and without considering road network density. The results of the density analysis showed that when road network density was considered, accidents were mainly distributed in urban centers, while accidents were more dispersed when road network density was not considered. Third, a cluster analysis considering accident severity found that low-severity accident clusters occurred mostly in urban centers. High-severity accident clusters were mostly present in suburban areas. Finally, the results of these two methods are shown by using the comap technique. Areas of the city with a high frequency and severity of crashes in each season were identified. We revisit the practice of combining revealed (RP) and stated preference (SP) data (i.e., the data enrichment, DE, paradigm) in discrete choice models using secondary data obtained from emerging sources; these facilitate access to massive information about travel choices and can be used to improve transport models. Even though the benefits of the DE paradigm have been known for years, there is a large gap between the state of practice and the state of the art, particularly in Global South countries (but also in many industrialized nations). We use a SP dataset considering two new transport alternatives (train and metro) and a RP dataset based on a large mobility survey in Bogotá, Colombia, complemented with fairly precise level-of-service data obtained using GIS utilities and the Distance Matrix API by Google.
