Abstract

A compact, quasi-4pi position sensitive silicon array, TIARA, designed to study direct reactions induced by radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is described here. The Transfer and Inelastic All-angle Reaction Array (TIARA) consists of 8 resistive charge division detectors forming an octagonal barrel around the target and a set of double-sided silicon-strip annular detectors positioned at each end of the barrel. The detector was coupled to the -ray array EXOGAM and the spectrometer VAMOS at the GANIL Laboratory to demonstrate the potential of such an apparatus with radioactive beams. The 14N(d,p)15N reaction, well known in direct kinematics, has been carried out in inverse kinematics for that purpose. The observation of the 15N ground state and excited states at 7.16 and 7.86 MeV is presented here as well as the comparison of the measured proton angular distributions with DWBA calculations. Abstract

International audience; The small ruminant (SR) value chain in Europe is a complex matrix of stakeholders with very different interests and profiles where it is not possible to establish one-size-fits-all solutions. The aim of this paper is to present the TechCarestrategies to manage animal welfare using innovative technologies, that are investigated through a multi-actor approach which takes into account the local SR production systems and involves all relevant stakeholders, from farmers totransporters, slaughterhouse, consumers and regulators. This co-design approach aims to: (1) Identify all relevant actors in SR value chain and train facilitators to engage stakeholders in continuous interaction and feedback to the rest of the project activities; (2) explore attitudes, behavioural dynamics and perceptions of stakeholders and their implications for prioritizing welfare issues and using innovative technologies to manage animal welfare at different production stages, and analyse the sustainability of the identified technologies by exploring their environmental, social, economic and cultural impacts. A series of engagements (i.e. one-on-one interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, nominal grouptechniques, concept mapping, etc.) will be set at regular stages in the project, for consultation and exchange of ideas and thus allowing co-design and co-innovation in a multi-actor approach. Among those, two national workshops peryear are planned in each of the nine partner countries to allow feedback and to effectively design business models and develop training and dissemination activities.

Abstract

International audience; Knowledge on the use of PLF technologies (Tech) at different levels of the value chain for small ruminants (SR) was updated. Their uses for addressing animal welfare (Care) were analysed with a scientific literature review (SciRev).Keywords (n=67) were identified and SciRev was launched by TechCare partners, using several engines. A total of 991 abstracts were identified. Records entailing both Tech and Care (TC papers) were retained and classifiedaccording to the Tech and targeted Care indicators, animal species, production type and farming system. The outcome was a shared database compiling details of 368 TC for which a corresponding Mendeley PDF database was builtand made available online. Preliminary analyses shows that most frequent Care issues are related to malnutrition (monitored by behavioural sensors), general or chronic fear, transport and heat stress. Image analysis (video camera)is the most quoted Tech, followed by GPS (mainly for animal geo-referencing), accelerometry, heart rate measures and ultrasonography. Many technologies are used to monitor the same Care issue. The range of Tech is narrower foradequate housing, where environmental sensors are often coupled with body thermal condition/emission. There are few Tech for detecting mastitis, lameness and endoparasites. Preliminary results suggest that early warning systemsbased on different interoperating sensors are needed to effectively monitor welfare issues such as malnutrition. Further research is required to match effectively Tech and prioritised Care issues in the context of TechCare project.

Abstract

International audience; Monitoring of small ruminants flocks could be enhanced by warnings sent by devices often frequented by animals. The OtoP-3D project aims to develop devices as self-weighing scales or 3D-body condition display. In the action 2 of the project, liveweight of lambs and ewes and ewes body condition score have been described following 3 livestock systems: indoors system, outdoors system, dairy system. Four lambs liveweight trajectories have been separated following the growth rate, the destination (lamb production vs replacement) and the early rearing system (maternal vs artificial suckling). Trajectories were based on median ±1 median absolute deviation forming an envelope wrapping the liveweight points of the group of animals. Liveweight and body condition score trajectories have also been described for ewes by testing 4 methods. Hierarchical ascending classification of similarity indices gave the best result. Those trajectories will be used to parametrize self weighing scales as WoW (walk over weighing) devices in small ruminants. Such devices will provide warnings to the breeder/farmer when a small ruminant will get its auto-weighing deviant from the trajectory it has been assigned following its previous recorded weights and its livestock system/physiological stage/destination/growth rate class.

Abstract

International audience; The GUINEVERE project is running since 2007 and is part of the EUROTRANS Integrated Project of the 6th EURATOM Framework Programme. It consists first in the construction of a lead fast ADS mock-up at SCK-CEN Mol (Belgium) for the purpose of ADS subcriticality monitoring experiments, and beyond in support to the design of a Transmutation Experimental Facility (MYRRHA/FASTEF). To do so the VENUS reactor (SCK-CEN) will be coupled with a new GENEPI neutron source under construction by CNRS (France). To accommodate this new source (a 250 keV deuteron accelerator) in a vertical coupling configuration, the VENUS building is being heightened. In parallel the reactor core is being modified to be loaded with fuel assemblies made of enriched Uranium and solid Lead moderator pins, and hold radial and axial Lead reflectors. A new safety and control rod system is also under development. The new GENEPI-3C neutron source is designed to be operated in pulsed mode but also in continuous mode to investigate the current-to-flux reactivity indicator in representative conditions of a powerful ADS. In this latter mode it will be also possible to make short beam interruptions at a fixed frequency to have access to the neutron population decrease as a function of time. The vertical beam line will have the distinctive feature to be retractile, allowing target changing or complete removal (for critical configuration for example). The accelerator will be first completely assembled at LPSC Grenoble for beam characterization before to be transferred in Mol. We will present in this paper the status of this experimental facility assembling, and foreseen experimental programmes in the framework of fast transmutation system studies.

Abstract

paper 9414; International audience; The GUINEVERE project is part of the EUROTRANS Integrated Project of the 6th EURATOM Framework Programme. It is mainly devoted to ADS on-line reactivity monitoring validation, sub-criticality determination and operational procedures (loading, start-up, shut-down, ...) as a follow-up of the MUSE experiments. The project consists in coupling a fast lead core, set-up in the VENUS reactor at SCK*CEN Mol (B), with a GENEPI neutron source under construction by CNRS. To accommodate the accelerator in a vertical coupling configuration, the VENUS building is being heightened. The fast core will be loaded with enriched Uranium and will be moderated and reflected with solid lead (zero power experiment). For the purpose of the experimental programme, the neutron source has to be operated not only in pulsed mode but also in continuous mode to investigate the current-to-flux reactivity indicator in representative conditions of a powerful ADS. In this latter mode it is also required to make short beam interruptions to have access to the neutron population decrease as a function of time: from this spectrum it will be possible to apply different analysis techniques such as "prompt decay" fitting techniques and "source jerk" techniques. Beam interruptions will be repeated at a programmable frequency to improve time spectra statistics. Different sub-criticality levels (keff=0.99, 0.97, 0.95, ...) will be investigated in order to obtain a full set of data points for the final overall validation of the methodology. This paper describes the status of the experimental facility assembling, and the foreseen experimental programme to be started.

Proc. on CD Rom log315; International audience; The GUINEVERE project is an international project in the framework of IP-EUROTRANS, the FP6 program which aims at addressing the main issues for ADS development in the framework of partitioning and transmutation for nuclear waste volume and radiotoxicity reduction. The GUINEVERE project is carried out in the context of domain 2 of IP-EUROTRANS, ECATS, devoted to specific experiments for the coupling of an accelerator, a target and a subcritical core. These experiments should provide an answer to the questions of online reactivity monitoring, sub-criticality determination and operational procedures (loading, start-up, shutdown, …) in an ADS by 2009-2010. The project has the objective to couple a fast lead core, within the VENUS building operated by the SCK•CEN, with a neutron generator able to work in three different modes: pulsed, continuous and continuous with beam interruptions at the millisecond scale. In order to achieve this goal, the VENUS facility has to be adapted and a modified GENEPI-3C accelerator has to be designed and constructed. The paper describes the main modifications to the reactor core and facility and to the accelerator, which will be executed during the years 2008 and 2009, and the experimental programme which will start in 2009.

Abstract

National audience; Les exigences grandissantes en matière de traçabilité orientent notre attention sur les systèmes de gestion d'information entre les exploitations, leurs partenaires économiques et l'administration afin de les optimiser. Sans préjuger du bien-fondé de cette approche, nous mettons ici l'accent sur les ressources à disposition des agriculteurs dans leur tâches dites administratives à travers trois éclairages : les efforts déployés entre 1950 et 1960 par l'appareil de développement autour de la gestion des papiers, le rôle de l'écrit dans la conduite des activités d'élevage, l'intérêt et les limites d'une formation à la gestion documentaire. Cet examen montre que des compétences déjà en place sont sollicitées par les exigences de traçabilté. Cependant les difficultés éprouvées par les professionnels dans la mise en oeuvre de la traçabilité nous oblige à poursuivre la réflexion sur la notion de "travail administratif" et sur le sens des évolutions en cours.

Abstract

The TRiga Accelerator Driven Experiment (TRADE) to be performed in the existing TRIGA reactor of the ENEA Casaccia centre had the objective of coupling a spallation target, a proton accelerator and a sub-critical reactor core. On the way of the transmutation of minor actinides in dedicated facilities, the TRADE experiment represents the intermediate step between the validation of each component of an Accelerator Driven System (ADS), i.e. the spallation target, the high intensity accelerator and the sub-critical core, and the final facility aiming to incinerate radioactive nuclear waste. Measurements have been performed in the TRIGA - RC1 reactor of the ENEA Casaccia centre in the second semester of 2004 to characterize the neutron flux in a critical configuration. Gold and Indium samples were introduced in the core with the help of a "fast rabbit" pneumatic device. Bare samples and samples covered with Cadmium foils were successively irradiated to estimate the thermal and epithermal fluxes. Measurements have been carried out along a traverse of the core. Samples were put inside Aluminium shuttles travelling in stainless steel tubes. Trains composed of five shuttles allowed for simultaneous measurements in five different axial positions. γ spectrometry of the radioactive nuclides has been performed with two HPGe detectors.

Abstract

The present document is the D13 deliverable report of work package 1, Target Development, from the MEGAPIE TEST project of the 5th European Framework Program. Deliverable D13 is the final summary report on the activities performed within WP 1. The manufacturer (ATEA) has indicated to deliver the target to PSI in the middle of 2005. Assuming that this date is realistic, it can be foreseen that the integral out-of beam test will be conducted during the end of the year 2005 and the beginning of the year 2006. It can be assumed that the irradiation of the MEGAPIE target will start during the second quarter of 2006. The content of the present work package 1 final summary report reflects the status of the MEGAPIE target and ancillary system development at the end of 2004.

Abstract

International audience; In a collaborative effort, the MEGAwatt Pillot Experiment is an initiative to design, build, operate and decommission an exploratory liquid lead-bismuth spallation target for 1 MW of beam power, taking advantage of the existing spallation neutron facility and accelerator complex SINQ in PSI.After a successful engineering design review in November 2001, the technical review meeting in March 2002 and the first detailed design review in April 2002, the target design is now almost completed, the manufacturing phase is launched and the construction will start in April 2003 after the second detail design review and the ready for manufacturing review in March. The present contribution is not a detailed description of the target design, but gives an overview on some selected issues of relevance before going into manufacturing.This paper is based on the presentation held at the MEGAPIE Technical Review Meeting in Paris on March 18-19, 2003. The target heat exchanger and the electromagnetic pump system are presented in separate papers of the Meeting and will not be detailed in this paper.

Abstract

A compact, quasi-4 pi position sensitive silicon array. TIARA, designed to study direct reactions induced by radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is described here. The Transfer and Inelastic All-angle Reaction Array (TIARA) consists of 8 resistive charge division detectors forming an octagonal barrel around the target and a set of double-sided silicon-strip annular detectors positioned at each end of the barrel. The detector was coupled to the gamma-ray array EXOGAM and the spectrometer VAMOS at the GANIL Laboratory to demonstrate the potential of such an apparatus with radioactive beams. The N-14(d,p)N-15 reaction, well known in direct kinematics, has been carried out in inverse kinematics for that purpose. The observation of the N-15 ground state and excited states at 7.16 and 7.86 MeV is presented here as well as the comparison of the measured proton angular distributions with DWBA calculations. Transferred l-values are in very good agreement with both theoretical calculations and previous experimental results obtained in direct kinematics.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents the over-arching latest advances of the multi-actor approach project, TechCare, which aims at developing appropriate early warning systems and business models using innovative technologies to improve welfaremanagement in EU small ruminant production systems. Small ruminants play a key socio-economic role in Europe, especially in harsh environments where innovative technology is not yet commonly adopted. Small ruminants are oftenmanaged as a flock/herd, allowing only average welfare states to be considered. Innovative technologies are a unique opportunity to improve small ruminant welfare management at the individual or flock/herd level, along the valuechain. To this aim, in each participant country, stakeholders will be involved to prioritize the most relevant welfare issues and corresponding indicators. In a second step, they will contribute to assess an array of country and productionsystem-tailored innovative technologies and early warning systems with potential for managing the prioritized welfare issues. These will then be tested on pilot farms in different conditions and validated at large-scale. The best performingtechnologies and systems which successfully pass all these steps will be evaluated for their viability in terms of business models. Whilst other consortium authors will present details of specific project activities (namely – stakeholders’engagement, welfare challenges identification and innovative technologies inventory), this paper focus on presenting preliminary activities and goals of the project to ensure awareness to a wide range of small ruminant stakeholders.

46. Review: Exploring the use of precision livestock farming for small ruminant welfare management.

Abstract

Small ruminant (sheep and goat) production of meat and milk is undertaken in diverse topographical and climatic environments and the systems range from extensive to intensive. This could lead to different types of welfare compromise, which need to be managed. Implementing Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) and other new or innovative technologies could help to manage or monitor animal welfare. This paper explores such opportunities, seeking to identify promising aspects of PLF that may allow improved management of welfare for small ruminants using literature search (two reviews), workshops in nine countries (France, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Norway, Romania, Spain, and the United Kingdom) with 254 stakeholders, and panels with 52 experts. An investigation of the main welfare challenges that may affect sheep and goats across the different management systems in Europe was undertaken, followed by a prioritisation of animal welfare issues obtained in the nine countries. This suggested that disease and health issues, feed access and undernutrition/malnutrition, maternal behaviour/offspring losses, environmental stressors and issues with agonistic behavioural interactions were important welfare concerns. These welfare issues and their indicators (37 for sheep, 25 for goats) were categorised into four broad welfare indicator categories: weight loss or change in body state (BWC), behavioural change (BC), milk yield and quality (MY), and environmental indicators (Evt). In parallel, 24 potential PLF and innovative technologies (8 for BWC; 10 for BC; 4 for MY; 6 for Evt) that could be relevant to monitor these broad welfare indicator categories and provide novel approaches to manage and monitor welfare have been identified. Some technologies had the capacity to monitor more than one broad indicator. Out of the 24 technologies, only 12 were animal-based sensors, or that could monitor the animal individually. One alternative could be to incorporate a risk management approach to welfare, using aspects of environmental stress. This could provide an early warning system for the potential risks of animal welfare compromise and alert farmers to the need to implement mitigation actions., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). 47. Measuring liveweight changes in lactating dairy ewes with an automated walk-over-weighing system.

Abstract

Monitoring liveweight (LW) is an important part of sound management practices at the individual and flock level (e.g., controlling for nutritional status based on body condition, reproduction, and health-related issues), but it is time consuming and stressful. To our knowledge, no literature has reported on the evaluation of automated weighing systems in dairy sheep as an alternative to conventional static scales. The objective of this research was to evaluate the practical feasibility of using an automated walk-over-weighing (WoW) prototype to measure daily LW changes in dairy ewes without human intervention. We used adult Lacaune dairy ewes in 2 complementary trials conducted indoors. Trial 1 aimed at evaluating the repeatability, precision, and accuracy of LW measures recorded using WoW scales compared with a static scale (the gold standard). Forty-two adult ewes (LW ± standard deviation = 71.3 ± 10.4 kg) were randomly drafted from the main flock and used in a 1-day session. The trial included 3 passages. In each passage, ewes were weighed first on a static scale; once a static position was achieved and LW recorded, they continued the circuit and immediately traversed the WoW scale for an automated LW record. Trial 2 aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of using the WoW device under real-world conditions in a dairy sheep-farming system. The WoW scale was installed in the exit race of the milking parlor and evaluated over 7 wk with adult ewes in mid lactation (n = 93; LW 78.5 ± 8.1 kg). Once the ewes were acclimated to the WoW system, 1 group of ewes (n = 48) continued to receive the same feeding regimen (controls), and the other group (n = 45) underwent a nutritional challenge [challenged; 2 wk of undernutrition and then back to control regimen (refeeding) for 1 wk]. We evaluated the ability of the WoW to detect small changes in LW. We collected LW data (2 weighings per ewe per day) from the WoW after each of the 2 milking sessions (morning and evening). We also obtained LW values by weighing the ewes using a static scale once a week. The automated WoW system showed substantial agreement with the gold standard when assessed using Lin's concordance correlation coefficient and Bland and Altman's method, largely due to high repeatability. The WoW system was adequate for detecting small daily variations in LW during undernutrition and refeeding periods. Misbehaviors resulted in spurious WoW values in trial 2, requiring us to use filtration methods to exclude outlier weights and allow meaningful assessment of small LW changes. The WoW system evaluated here is an alternative to the static scales conventionally used on dairy sheep farms. If sound filtration of raw data is applied, WoW could contribute to the close (daily) monitoring of individual LW without operator intervention (i.e., voluntary weighing) and taking animal welfare into account (i.e., no stress related to the weighing session on static scales)., (Copyright © 2021 American Dairy Science Association.
