Introduction: Neuromonitoring represents a cornerstone in the comprehensive management of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), allowing for early detection of complications such as increased intracranial pressure (ICP) [1]. This has led to a search for noninvasive modalities that are reliable and deployable at bedside. Among these, ultrasonographic optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurement is a strong contender, estimating ICP by quantifying the distension of the optic nerve at higher ICP values. Thus, this scoping review seeks to describe the existing evidence for the use of ONSD in estimating ICP in adult TBI patients as compared to gold-standard invasive methods. Materials and Methods: This review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews, with a main search of PubMed and EMBASE. The search was limited to studies of adult patients with TBI published in any language between 2012 and 2022. Sixteen studies were included for analysis, with all studies conducted in high-income countries. Results: All of the studies reviewed measured ONSD using the same probe frequency. In most studies, the marker position for ONSD measurement was initially 3 mm behind the globe, retina, or papilla. A few studies utilized additional parameters such as the ONSD/ETD (eyeball transverse diameter) ratio or ODE (optic disc elevation), which also exhibit high sensitivity and reliability. Conclusion: Overall, ONSD exhibits great test accuracy and has a strong, almost linear correlation with invasive methods. Among such non-invasive choices, transcranial Doppler (TCD) provides indirect ICP estimates through waveform analysis of cerebral hemodynamic changes. The objective of this scoping review is to describe the existing evidence for the use of TCD-derived methods in estimating ICP in adult TBI patients as compared with gold-standard invasive methods. Nevertheless, mathematical methods are associated with greater cost and complexity in their application. Formula-based methods showed promise in excluding elevated ICP, exhibiting a high negative predictive value. Savin [' $\mathcal {C}^{1}$ regularity for infinity harmonic functions in two dimensions', Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 3 (176) (2005), 351–361] proved that every planar absolutely minimizing Lipschitz (AML) function is continuously differentiable whenever the ambient space is Euclidean. More recently, Peng et al. ['Regularity of absolute minimizers for continuous convex Hamiltonians', J. Differential Equations 274 (2021), 1115–1164] proved that this property remains true for planar AML functions for certain convex Hamiltonians, using some Euclidean techniques. Their result can be applied to AML functions defined in two-dimensional normed spaces with differentiable norm. Through an inductive thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with experts, this study corroborates key findings on contextual and organisational dynamics behind profit-driven cybercrime. The findings pinpoint three contextual factors influencing individuals to participate in profit-driven cybercrime: lack of legal economic opportunities, lack of deterrents, and drifting means. The findings also highlight how experts perceive group structures of those behind profit-driven cybercrime: as organised, enterprise-like, loose networks, or communities. Experts' narratives, moreover, emphasise the presence of a workforce at the periphery of cybercrime groups. Such a workforce is not actively involved in developing criminal schemes, yet it helps their orchestration by achieving necessary tasks such as writing texts or developing software. The study results confirm key insights on crime participation related to both cyber and non-cybercrime literature while also raising new research avenues, including questions concerning to what extent those forming the peripheral workforce are willing to participate in cybercrime. A Kalman filter can be used to fill space–state reconstruction dynamics based on knowledge of a system and partial measurements. However, its performance relies on accurate modeling of the system dynamics and a proper characterization of the uncertainties, which can be hard to obtain in real-life scenarios. In this work, we explore how the values of a Kalman gain matrix can be estimated by using spiking neural networks through a combination of biologically plausible neuron models with spike-time-dependent plasticity learning algorithms. The performance of proposed neural architecture is verified with simulations of some representative nonlinear systems, which show promising results. This approach traces a path for its implementation in neuromorphic analog hardware that can learn and reconstruct partial and changing dynamics of a system without the massive power consumption that is typically needed in a Von Neumann-based computer architecture. There is limited evidence about the real‐world survival of apremilast in patients with psoriasis, especially over the long term. To evaluate the long‐term survival of apremilast and its predictive factors when used to treat psoriasis. A retrospective hospital‐based study, including data collected from 104 patients. Survival curves were estimated using the Kaplan–Meier estimator. Proportional hazard Cox regression models were used for multivariate analysis. The average duration of the treatment before discontinuation was 28.82 months (95% CI, 22.08–35.57 months) and the median was 12 months (95% CI, 2.68–21.31 months). The retention rates were 51% (1 year), and 33% (5 years). The survival study revealed statistically significant differences between patients with PASI<10 and those in the PASI≥10 group (log‐rank test, p < 0.001). The 5‐year prevalences were 64% for patients with a PASI of <10 and 5% for those with an index ≥10. In the PASI < 10‐patient group, the retention rates were 77% (1 year) and 64% (5 years). Furthermore, 66% of patients who continued apremilast treatment for more than 2 years were receiving off‐label doses (30 mg/day). The existence of enormous volumes of mine tailings (MTs) deposits around the World, and specially in Chile, has generated a growing interest about the potential economic and socio-environmental benefits of reprocessing them. The present study assesses this possibility in the world class example of Mineral Valle Central (MVC), one of the few MTs reprocessing plants that has been under operation since 1992. To do so, 20 sampling points along the mineral processing plant were selected and monitored every two months from April 2018 to January 2019, generating a total of 120 samples. The multivariate statistical analysis of detailed chemical and mineralogical information confirmed the existence of two main groups, a first one corresponding to the elements (As, Ag, Fe, Cd, Co, Ni, Pb, Sb and Zn) linked to sulphides and a second one including elements mainly hosted by silicates. As expected, the first group of elements showed a general increasing tendency in their concentration along the processing plant while the second group tended to decrease their concentrations. It was observed that during the generation of the current Cu-concentrate in MVC, Co concentrations are increased as high as ten times (~0.25 g/kg) from the original concentration in the MTs entering the reprocessing plant (~0.025 g/kg). Therefore, the design and theoretical addition of new operational units to generate pyrite concentrates was evaluated. Such a de-pyritization process unit could link economic and environmental potential benefits thanks to the recovery of the Co hosted in pyrite and to the reduction of the acid generation potential of the final MTs sent to Caren MTs deposit. This exploratory study shows important environmental benefits as well as some economic potential thanks to the recovery of Co hosted in pyrite. Notwithstanding, future comprehensive Co deportment studies and a detailed technical – economical evaluation are needed to determine the economic feasibility for the construction of the proposed de-pyritization process unit. Let X be a separable infinite dimensional (real or complex) Banach space. Hájek and Smith, in 2010, constructed a linear bounded operator T on X such that AT ≔ {x ∈ X : ||Tnx|| → ∞} is not dense and has nonempty interior, whenever X admits a symmetric basis. Augé, in 2012, extended the previous construction to each separable Banach space, introducing the notion of wild operators. This work is divided in two parts. In the first part we define and explore the notion of asymptotically separated sets on Banach spaces, giving several examples whenever the ambient space has either finite or infinite dimension. We show how these sets can be used to construct operators with non-intuitive dynamics. Specifically, operators T : X → X for which the set AT and the set of recurrent points form a partition of the space. Secondly, we investigate geometric and spectral properties of operators with wild dynamic and we provide a wild operator whose spectrum is equal to the closed unit disk. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, the early detection of which is crucial for timely intervention and enrollment in clinical trials. However, the preclinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's encounters difficulties with gold-standard methods. The current definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer's still relies on expensive instrumentation and post-mortem histological examinations. Here, we explore label-free Raman spectroscopy with machine learning as an alternative to preclinical Alzheimer's diagnosis. A special feature of this study is the inclusion of patient samples from different cohorts, sampled and measured in different years. To develop reliable classification models, partial least squares discriminant analysis in combination with variable selection methods identified discriminative molecules, including nucleic acids, amino acids, proteins, and carbohydrates such as taurine/hypotaurine and guanine, when applied to Raman spectra taken from dried samples of cerebrospinal fluid. The robustness of the model is remarkable, as the discriminative molecules could be identified in different cohorts and years. A unified model notably classifies preclinical Alzheimer's, which is particularly surprising because of Raman spectroscopy's high sensitivity regarding different measurement conditions. The presented results demonstrate the capability of Raman spectroscopy to detect preclinical Alzheimer's disease for the first time and offer invaluable opportunities for future clinical applications and diagnostic methods. The growth behavior of Cr and W surfaces using kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations based on Density-Functional Theory (DFT) is presented in this study. Three models, a growth model with random deposition and no diffusion, a growth model with restricted diffusion and a growth model with unrestricted diffusion model, were compared to understand their influence on the predicted surface roughness and layer density. The impact of deposition rate and temperature on surface growth for both metals were analyzed. For deposition rate studies, five different rates (0.01 ML/s, 0.1 ML/s, 1.0 ML/s, 10.0 ML/s, and 100 ML/s) were considered at 550 K for Cr and W respectively. The effect of temperature on roughness was also studied employing various temperatures from 300 K to 1100 K for both metals and under the two different evolution models. The results show that the unrestricted diffusion model exhibits higher roughness compared to the restricted model for both metals. The restricted model shows a stable region of roughness, whereas the unrestricted model shows a continuous increase in roughness throughout the simulation. Furthermore, layer density analysis revealed that temperature affects the filling of lower monolayers. Finally, dynamic exponents β and α for each studied model were calculated and discussed. Purpose: DLG7 (disc large homolog 7) is a microtubule-associated protein encoded by DLGAP5 (DLG associated protein 5) gene and has an important role during spindle assembly. Spindle assembly deregulation is a well-known cause of genomic instability. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of DLGAP5 expression on survival and to evaluate its potential use as a biomarker in colorectal cancer (CRC). Methods: DLGAP5 expression was measured in the primary tumor and corresponding normal mucosa samples from 109 patients with CRC and correlated to clinical and pathological data. The results were validated in a second, publically available patient cohort. Molecular effects of DLG7/DLGAP5 in CRC were analyzed via functional assays in knockdown cell lines. Results: DLGAP5 downregulation led to a significant reduction of the invasion and migration potential in CRC. In addition, DLGAP5 expression correlates with nodal status and advanced UICC stage (III–IV).Subgroup analyses revealed a correlation between DLGAP5 overexpression and poor survival in patients with non-metastatic disease (M0). Furthermore, overexpression of DLGAP5 is associated with worse overall survival in distinct molecular CRC subtypes. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest the importance of DLGAP5 in defining a more aggressive CRC phenotype. Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate whether the consumption of anticoagulants was associated with a difference in the frequency of thrombosis of any site, major bleeding and mortality, in adults with both diseases. Method: A retrospective cohort study was carried out in four high complexity centers. Patients older than 18 years with CKD on hemodialysis and non-valvular AF, with an indication for anticoagulation (CHA2DS2VASc ≥ 2), were included. The primary outcome was the occurrence of: major bleeding, thrombotic event (cerebrovascular accident, acute myocardial infarction or venous thromboembolic disease) or death. Adjustment for confounding variables was performed using logistic regression. Results: From 158 patients included, 61% (n = 97) received an anticoagulant. The main outcome was found in 84% of those who received anticoagulation and 70% of those who did not (OR: 2.12, 95%CI: 0.98-4.57; after the adjusted analysis OR: 2.13, 95%CI: 1.04-4.36). Separate outcomes were bleeding in 52% vs. 34% (OR: 2.03; 95%CI: 1.05-3.93), thrombosis in 35% vs. 34% (OR: 1.03; 95%CI: 0.52-2-01) and death in 46% vs. 41% (OR: 1.25; 95%CI: 0.65-2.38). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest an increased risk of bleeding in patients with AF and CKD on hemodialysis receiving anticoagulation, without a decrease in the risk of thrombotic events or all-cause mortality [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reviews hydrogeological studies carried out between 2016 and 2018 in the Silala River basin, a catchment shared by Chile and Bolivia. These were conducted in the context of the Case Concerning the Status and Use of the Waters of the Silala River, submitted to the International Court of Justice in 2016, and contributed to multidisciplinary science to demonstrate that this system is an international watercourse. In 2016, the hydrogeological understanding of the Silala River basin was poor. The studies reviewed here filled many knowledge gaps, providing a solid hydrogeological baseline, and establishing new monitoring infrastructure to collect relevant aquifer data. The most important hydrogeological units were identified as the fluvial deposits, alluvial deposits, and the Cabana ignimbrite. The latter is highly heterogeneous, weathered and fractured, and exhibits a high permeability. It is the most important unit in terms of productivity, and is the major regional aquifer providing spring flows to Bolivian wetlands and groundwater flow across the international border. The studies provided a preliminary understanding of the main aquifers in Chile and their properties, which underpinned the development of a robust hydrogeological conceptual model of the system, reviewed elsewhere in this special issue. Subsequent refinements are also summarized. This work confirmed that both surface water and groundwater flows from Bolivia to Chile, and thus confirms the status of the Silala River as an international watercourse and provided the basis for a basin‐scale groundwater numerical model, used to investigate the impact of wetland channelization on surface water/groundwater partitioning. This paper presents the operational cloud retrieval algorithms for the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) on board the European Space Agency Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) mission scheduled for launch in 2017. Two algorithms working in tandem are used for retrieving cloud properties: OCRA (Optical Cloud Recognition Algorithm) and ROCINN (Retrieval of Cloud Information using Neural Networks). OCRA retrieves the cloud fraction using TROPOMI measurements in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible (VIS) spectral regions, and ROCINN retrieves the cloud top height (pressure) and optical thickness (albedo) using TROPOMI measurements in and around the oxygen A-band in the near infrared (NIR). Cloud parameters from TROPOMI/S5P will be used not only for enhancing the accuracy of trace gas retrievals but also for extending the satellite data record of cloud information derived from oxygen A-band measurements, a record initiated with the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) on board the second European Remote-Sensing Satellite (ERS-2) over 20 years ago. The OCRA and ROCINN algorithms are integrated in the S5P operational processor UPAS (Universal Processor for UV/VIS/NIR Atmospheric Spectrometers), and we present here UPAS cloud results using the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and GOME-2 measurements. Sarcopenia is a disease characterized by loss of skeletal muscle. Leucine, a branched-chain amino acid, is beneficial for muscle synthesis and health, therefore incorporation of high leucine foods promotes the synthesis of muscle mass. Omics sciences, especially bioinformatics allowed in silico analysis of metabolic fluxes. To determine the leucine metabolic fluxes, we performed a bioinformatical analysis resulting in a leucine consumption model that consider the leucine intake by arterial route, exit of leucine from the cell to the vein, the cleavage of protein releasing leucine into the cell, and the release of leucine to the cell without being metabolized. • A novel data-driven approach to discover phase topology of low-voltage customers is proposed. • An up-to-date certainty about phase connection of each customer can be given thanks to Bayesian inference. • It obtains accuracies higher than 97 % in almost any case regardless of the Smart Meter penetration. • Prior knowledge of the grid improves the performance even if it contains some errors. Knowledge of customer phase connection in low-voltage distribution networks is important for Distribution System Operators (DSOs). This paper presents a novel data-driven phase identification method based on Bayesian inference, which uses load consumption profiles as inputs. This method uses a non-linear function to establish the probability of a customer being connected to a given phase, based on variations in the customer's consumption and those in the phase feeders. Owing to the Bayesian inference, the proposed method can provide up-to-date certainty about the phase connection of each customer. To improve the detection of those customers that are more difficult to identify, after obtaining the up-to-date certainty for all users, the consumption of those who have an up-to-date certainty above a certain percentile compared with the rest of the substation (those that are more likely to be correctly classified) is subtracted from the phase in which they are classified. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated using a real (non-synthetic) low-voltage distribution network. Favourable results (with accuracies higher than 97 %) were obtained in almost all cases, regardless of the percentage of Smart Meter penetration and the size of the substation. A comparison with other state-of-the-art methods showed that the proposed method outperforms (or equals) them. The proposed method does not necessarily require previously labelled data; however, it can handle them even if they contain errors. We introduce the notions of extended topological vector spaces and extended seminormed spaces, following the main ideas of extended normed spaces, which were introduced by G. Beer and J. Vanderwerff. We provide a topological study of such structures, giving a unifying theory with main applications in the study of spaces of continuous functions. The cybercrime industry is characterised by work specialisation to the point that it has become a volume industry with various “as-a-service” offerings. One well-established “as-a-service” business model is blackmarket pay-per-install (PPI) services, which outsource the spread of malicious programmes to affiliates. Such a business model represents the archetype of specialisation in the cybercrime industry: a mass of individuals, known as affiliates, specialise in spreading malware on behalf of a service. Extant literature has focused on understanding the scope of such a service and its functioning. However, despite the large number and aggregate effect of affiliates on cybercrime, little research has been done on understanding why and how affiliates participate in such models. This study depicts the motivations and challenges of affiliates spreading Android banking Trojan applications through a blackmarket PPI service. We conducted a thematic analysis of over 6,000 of their private chat messages. The findings highlight affiliates’ labour-intensive work and precarious working conditions along with their limited income, especially compared to their expectations. Affiliates’ participation in cybercrime was found to be entangled between legal and blackmarket programmes, as affiliates did not care about programmes’ legal status as long as they yielded money. In the mining industry deposits of tailings represent large volumes of the mining wastes, reflecting the mineralogy and chemistry of the ore deposit type of origin. In this paper, we report the results of a mineralogical and geochemical characterization study and geostatistical modelling of an Iron Oxide Copper Gold deposit with neutral pH, in an arid climate. Twenty-eight boreholes allowed recovery of 755 samples for analysis. Modelling by means of co-kriging spatial interpolation allowed determination of the distribution of concentrations for elements of interest in the deposit. Low water flow and near neutral-pH paste restrict the mobility of the chemical elements, limiting the development of an oxidation front and inhibiting the appearance of a secondary mineral enrichment zone and the precipitation of secondary efflorescent salts on the tailings surface. Our observations determine that the composition of the gangue material, and to a lesser extent the effect of the tailings gravitational deposition and the geometry of the deposit, control the geochemical and mineralogical associations and distributions present in this deposit of tailings. The observed low mobility along the tailings profile of some potential pollutants (e.g., As, Mn, Cr and Ni) allows to anticipate a low groundwater pollution risk as long as the current environmental conditions remain. Additionally, the depositional history of the tailings had a great influence on the vertical and horizontal distribution of pyrite. However, the grades of elements economic interest such as Fe, Cu and Co are uniformly distributed, which would facilitate the application of tailings reprocessing technologies. In addition, it would allow maximizing the number of necessary boreholes for its economic evaluation. Jacobians, i.e. partial derivatives of the radiance and transmission spectrum with respect to the atmospheric state parameters to be retrieved from remote sensing observations, are important for the iterative solution of the nonlinear inverse problem. Finite difference Jacobians are easy to implement, but computationally expensive and possibly of dubious quality; on the other hand, analytical Jacobians are accurate and efficient, but the implementation can be quite demanding. GARLIC, our “Generic Atmospheric Radiation Line-by-line Infrared Code”, utilizes algorithmic differentiation (AD) techniques to implement derivatives w.r.t. atmospheric temperature and molecular concentrations. In this paper, we describe our approach for differentiation of the high resolution infrared and microwave spectra and provide an in-depth assessment of finite difference approximations using “exact” AD Jacobians as a reference. The results indicate that the “standard” two-point finite differences with 1 K and 1% perturbation for temperature and volume mixing ratio, respectively, can exhibit substantial errors, and central differences are significantly better. However, these deviations do not transfer into the truncated singular value decomposition solution of a least squares problem. Users identification by means of their keystroke pattern is an old and known technique. Several works had analysed and solved some of the most important issues in this area, but with the advances of technology, previous techniques have quickly become obsolete. Users as well as attackers spend a lot of time typing on their computers, locally and remotely. Their keystrokes leave a trace of patterns whose dynamism can be analysed and used to verify their identity. We propose to use unsupervised clustering algorithms to group user sessions together in order to correctly identify them. Furthermore, the verification of keystroke dynamics techniques has always been difficult because of the lack of a labelled free text dataset. To overcome this issue, we capture a large dataset of labelled keystrokes of more than two and a half million digraphs. Results show that having a keystroke dynamics dataset of user sessions and knowing the number of users who participated, it is possible to group the sessions of the same user, regardless of any previous knowledge about the users. A level of accuracy of at least 78% was achieved. If the sessions with fewer digraphs are discarded, a performance that exceeds 90% can be attained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A suite of programs for high resolution infrared-microwave atmospheric radiative transfer modeling has been developed with emphasis on efficient and reliable numerical algorithms and a modular approach appropriate for simulation and/or retrieval in a variety of applications. The Generic Atmospheric Radiation Line-by-line Infrared Code — GARLIC — is suitable for arbitrary observation geometry, instrumental field-of-view, and line shape. The core of GARLIC's subroutines constitutes the basis of forward models used to implement inversion codes to retrieve atmospheric state parameters from limb and nadir sounding instruments. This paper briefly introduces the physical and mathematical basics of GARLIC and its descendants and continues with an in-depth presentation of various implementation aspects: An optimized Voigt function algorithm combined with a two-grid approach is used to accelerate the line-by-line modeling of molecular cross sections; various quadrature methods are implemented to evaluate the Schwarzschild and Beer integrals; and Jacobians, i.e. derivatives with respect to the unknowns of the atmospheric inverse problem, are implemented by means of automatic differentiation. For an assessment of GARLIC's performance, a comparison of the quadrature methods for solution of the path integral is provided. Verification and validation are demonstrated using intercomparisons with other line-by-line codes and comparisons of synthetic spectra with spectra observed on Earth and from Venus. Biological drugs have prompted a revolution in the treatment of patients with psoriasis because of their favourable efficacy/risk profile. The aims of our study are to determine whether there is any difference in the pattern of use of biological treatments for older (65+ years) and younger patients diagnosed with plaque psoriasis by the Dermatology Service of the Hospital Universitario de Asturias (HUCA), to understand the survival of these drugs, and to identify the factors that predict the discontinuation of treatments. We report a retrospective observational hospital-based study of 300 patients registered at HUCA's Dermatology Service who were receiving one of the following biological treatments for psoriasis on 30 November 2020: adalimumab, ustekinumab, secukinumab, or ixekizumab. The age groups were compared using Student's t-test for quantitative variables and the chi-squared test for qualitative variables. We used the Kaplan–Meier estimator to estimate the survival function and the log-rank test to measure differences. No statistically significant differences in the frequency of use were noted between the younger and older groups, for any of the drugs studied. Survival on a drug regime, globally and individually, was similar in the two age groups. Factors predicting lower overall survival were being female, obesity, and having undergone previous biological treatment. Abstract: Hemiparkinsonism induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) injected in left corpus striatum is a recognized model of motor deficits in rats. Some reports concerning motor deficits indicate a favorable response to steroid administration in hemiparkinsonian animals. However, there is no much information regarding progesterone administration in relation to cognitive and affective dysfunctions. Here we could confirm earlier reports regarding a mild deficit of memory and a noticeable depressive-like behavior 4weeks after injecting 6-OHDA. We also present some evidence that progesterone could be – when administered 7days after the injection of 6-OHDA – a possible neuroprotector concerning both motor deficits as well as cognitive — memory- and depression-like behaviors. The affective deficit was reverted by administering the tricyclic antidepressant imipramine. Since Parkinson''s disease is a conspicuous cause of psycho-organic decline in human beings, it would be important to be able of dealing early with non-motor indicators in order to use prospective neuroprotectors to prevent the progression of the disease. Introduction: The pathogenesis of prosthesis loosening is not well understood. The aim of our study was to sonicate components of joint prostheses removed due to aseptic loosening, culture the sonicate fluid, and to correlate these results with the degree of radiological osteolysis. Methods: From January 2008 to June 2009 all consecutive patients who underwent a revision of hip or knee prosthesis due to aseptic loosening were included in the study. Aseptic loosening was established when the patient had radiological signs of loosening without symptoms or signs of infection. The diagnosis was confirmed when histology was negative, and ≥5 out of 6 standard cultures of periprosthetic tissue were negative. Bone lysis was measured according to the Paprosky or Engh classifications without knowing the result of sonication cultures. Removed components were placed in sterile bags and immediately transported to the microbiology laboratory and sonicated. Sonicate fluid was cultured and the results were correlated with the degree of bone lysis. The proportion of components with positive sonication culture according to the bone lysis classification was compared using χ test. Results: A total of 52 patients were included and 123 components were sonicated. In 30 patients at least 1 sonicated component was positive (57.7%) and 44 out of 123 (35.8%) components were positive. The proportion of positive sonication cultures was significantly higher in the group of components with a higher degree of bone lysis of 3 (76.5%) than in those with lower degrees (33.9% for 1 and 24% for 2) (χ test, p = 0.0004). Conclusions: Sonication cultures were positive in 57% of patients who underwent revision arthroplasty for aseptic loosening. The percentage of positive sonication cultures was significantly higher in patients with severe osteolysis. Abstract: Dementia is a growing concern due to the aging process of the western societies. Non-invasive detection is therefore a high priority research endeavor. In this paper we report results of classification systems applied to the feature vectors obtained by a feature extraction method computed on structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) volumes for the detection of two neurological disorders with cognitive impairment: myotonic dystrophy of type 1 (MD1) and Alzheimer disease (AD). The feature extraction process is based on the voxel clusters detected by voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis of sMRI upon a set of patient and control subjects. This feature extraction process is specific for each kind of disease and is grounded on the findings obtained by medical experts. The 10-fold cross-validation results of several statistical and neural network based classification algorithms trained and tested on these features show high specificity and moderate sensitivity of the classifiers, suggesting that the approach is better suited for rejecting than for detecting early stages of the diseases. Identifying the etiologic microorganism is essential to guide antimicrobial therapy in prosthetic joint infection. We (1) compared the frequency of positive cultures with synovial fluid inoculated in blood culture flasks (SF) with those of periprosthetic tissues or swabs in traditional cultures from patients with acute and chronic prosthetic joint infections (PJI) and (2) determined the sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of the three methods. We retrospectively reviewed 87 patients with PJIs (54 knees, 33 hips) and 63 patients with aseptic loosening (34 knees, 29 hips). Two SF, periprosthetic tissue, and swab samples were taken for culture in all 150 patients except for 14 in whom only one SF fluid sample was obtained. Synovial fluid was inoculated in blood culture flasks and periprosthetic tissue and swab samples in standard media. Positive cultures were identified with standard biochemical procedures. SF samples were positive in 78 of 87 infected cases (90%), periprosthetic tissue samples were positive in 71 (82%), and swab samples were positive in 59 (68%). SF, periprosthetic tissue, and swab samples were positive more frequently in acute than in chronic infections (96% versus 82% for SF, 87% versus 74% for periprosthetic tissue, and 87% versus 44% for swabs). The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of SF were 91, 100, 100, and 93 for acute infections and 79, 100, 100, and 88 for chronic infections, respectively. SF samples cultured in flasks had higher sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values for diagnosis of PJI when compared with standard tissue and swab samples. Abstract: A widely accepted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) model states that the observed voxel intensity is a piecewise constant signal intensity function corresponding to the tissue spatial distribution, corrupted with multiplicative and additive noise. The multiplicative noise is assumed to be a smooth bias field, it is called intensity inhomogeneity (IIH) field. Our approach to IIH correction is based on the definition of an energy function that incorporates some smoothness constraints into the conventional classification error function of the IIH corrected image. The IIH field estimation algorithm is a gradient descent of this energy function relative to the IIH field. We call it adaptive field rule (AFR). We comment on the likeness of our approach to the self-organizing map (SOM) learning rule, on the basis of the neighboring function that controls the influence of the neighborhood on each voxel''s IIH estimation. We discuss the convergence properties of the algorithm. Experimental results show that AFR compares well with state of the art algorithms. Moreover, the mean signal intensity corresponding to each class of tissue can be estimated from the image data applying the gradient descent of the proposed energy function relative to the intensity class means. Abstract: Given an appropriate imaging resolution, a common Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) model assumes that the object under study is composed of homogeneous tissues whose imaging intensity is constant, so that MRI produces piecewise constant images. The intensity inhomogeneity (IIH) is modeled by a multiplicative inhomogeneity field. It is due to the spatial inhomogeneity in the excitatory Radio Frequency (RF) signal and other effects. It has been acknowledged as a greater source of error for automatic segmentation algorithms than additive noise. We propose a parametric IIH correction algorithm for MRI that consists of the gradient descent of an error function related to the classification error of the IIH corrected image. The inhomogeneity field is modeled as a linear combination of 3D products of Legendre polynomials. In this letter we test both the image restoration capabilities and the classification accuracy of the algorithm. In restoration processes the adaptive algorithm is used only to estimate the inhomogeneity field. Test images to be restored are IIH corrupted versions of the BrainWeb site simulations. The algorithm image restoration is evaluated by the correlation of the restored image with the known clean image. In classification processes the algorithm is used to estimate both the inhomogeneity field and the intensity class means. The algorithm classification accuracy is tested over the images from the IBSR site. The proposed algorithm is compared with Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) and Fuzzy Clustering algorithms. After countries began to deregulate electricity markets there have been indications that there might be cycles in generation capacity. This has been shown both in simulation models, experiments, and in empirical data. These cycles are caused by the combination of several different factors. The most influential of these factors are: long construction delays, long lifetime of installed capacity and the limited transparency in the industry with regards to future investments, capacity under construction, and the time it takes installed capacity to be retired. The introduction of renewable generation changes two of these factors, namely, the capacity under construction is significantly shorter although there is more uncertainty around the capacity under construction because of the often distributed nature of new generation. Using a simulation model, this paper addresses the effect of the influence of renewable generation on the formation of generation cycles. The results of the study show that there is an effect of renewables on shorter the cycles. The introduction of renewable generation has the potential to impact the formation of cycles; however, it does nothing to increase transparency with respect to capacity, which is planned, under-construction, or about to be retired. • There is evidence from simulations, experiments, and empirical data of capacity cycles in electricity markets. • This are partially caused by construction delay, long lifetimes and lack of transparency of information about investments. • We analyses the effect of renewables, with lower construction delays, in capacity cycles with simulation. • Simulations indicate that renewable generation shorter the cycles, but increases its frequency. A classical result of variational analysis, known as Attouch theorem, establishes an equivalence between epigraphical convergence of a sequence of proper convex lower semicontinuous functions and graphical convergence of the corresponding subdifferential maps up to a normalization condition which fixes the integration constant. In this work, we show that in finite dimensions and under a mild boundedness assumption, we can replace subdifferentials (sets of vectors) by slopes (scalars, corresponding to the distance of the subdifferentials to zero) and still obtain the same characterization: namely, the epigraphical convergence of functions is equivalent to the epigraphical convergence of their slopes. This surprising result goes in line with recent developments on slope determination (Boulmezaoud et al. in SIAM J Optim 28(3):2049–2066, 2018; Pérez-Aros et al. in Math Program 190(1–2):561-583, 2021) and slope sensitivity (Daniilidis and Drusvyatskiy in Proc Am Math Soc 151(11):4751-4756, 2023) for convex functions. Since the emergence of the virus that causes COVID-19 (the SARS-CoV-2) in Wuhan in December 2019, societies all around the world have had to change their normal life patterns due to the restrictions and lockdowns imposed by governments. These changes in life patterns have a direct reflection on energy consumption. Thanks to Smart Grid technologies, specifically to the Advance Metering Infrastructure at secondary distribution network, this impact can be evaluated even at the customer level. Thus, this paper analyzes the consumption behavior and the impact that this crisis has had using Smart Meter data. The proposed approach includes the selection and normalization of features, automatic clustering, the obtaining of the estimated consumption without considering the crisis (at short and mid-terms) and the impact evaluation. The proposed approach has been tested on a case with a real Smart Meter infrastructure from Manzanilla (Huelva, Spain). The results of this use case showed that residential customers have increased their consumption around 15% during full lockdown and 7.5% during the reopening period. In contrast, globally, non-residential customers have decreased their consumption 38% during full lockdown and 14.5% during the reopening period. However, referring to non-residential customers, five different consumption profiles were found with different short-term and mid-term behaviors during the COVID crisis. The different behavior found shows customers who have maintained their normal consumption during the lockdown, others who have reduced it (to a greater or lesser extent) and have not recovered it after the removal of the restrictions, and others who have reduced the consumption but then they recovered it when the restrictions were removed. The metadata of the customers in each behavior cluster found are highly correlated to the restrictions imposed to control the spread of the virus. Nowadays, the presence of renewable generation systems and mobile loads (i.e., electric vehicle) spread throughout the distribution network is increasing. The problem is that this type of system introduces an added difficulty since they present a strong dependence on the meteorology and the mobility needs of the users. This problem forces the distribution system operators to seek tools that make it possible to balance the relationship between consumption and generation. In this sense, automated demand response systems are an appropriate solution that allow the operator to request specific reductions in customers' consumption, offering a discount to the customer and avoiding network congestion. This paper analyzes the implementation and architecture of a demand response solution based on OpenADR standard and its possible integration with a building management system through a use case. As will be analyzed, a key part of the architecture is the measurement system based on smart meters acting as sensors. This is the base of the auditing system which makes it possible to verify compliance with the consumption reduction agreements. Additionally, this study is completed with a parallel auditing system which makes it possible to verify compliance with the consumption reduction agreements. All of the proposed demand response cycle is implemented as a proof of concept in a classroom in the Escuela Politécnica Superior at the University of Seville, which makes it possible to identify the advantages of this architecture in the ambit of connection between distribution network and buildings. Chloroplasts were isolated from senescent leaf segments of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. var. Mozoncillo) and assayed for protein synthesis. Protein synthesis activity of the chloroplasts greatly increased after 10-20 h of incubation of leaf segments in the dark in spite of an intense degradation of chloroplast rRNA. The rise in the activity of protein synthesis was more pronounced when kinetin was present in the incubation medium. However, as deduced from SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the products, different proteins were synthesized under the two conditions of incubation of the leaf segments. The activity of protein synthesis of the chloroplasts decreased during the first hours of incubation of the leaf segments in the light. Cutting and incubation in the dark of the leaf segments enhanced the synthesis of a few proteins also formed by chloroplasts in attached senescing leaves. Hormone and senescence treatments changed the type and the rate of the protein synthesized by chloroplasts, which suggests that hormones may control senescence through a modulation of the protein synthesized by the chloroplasts. Due to its advantages, ceramic-on-ceramic bearings have been widely used in young patients for almost 30 years. Long-term survivorship, low wear, and low biological reactivity to particles are some of its characteristics. Even though this material has had a lot of improvements, the risk of fracture is one of the concerns. There have been reports of fracture of ceramic in the acetabular liner and head but no fractures of both in the same patient. We report a case of a fracture in a sandwich type acetabular liner and the ceramic head in a patient involving ankylosing spondylitis. It occurred three years after the operation and with no history of direct trauma. We decided to change the bearing surfaces to metal polyethylene without removing the metal back. The acquisition of data in protected natural environments is subordinated to actions that do not stress the life-forms present in that environment. This is why researchers face two conflicting interests: autonomous and robust systems that minimize the physical interaction with sensors once installed, and complex enough ones to capture and process higher volumes of data. On the basis of this situation, this paper analyses the current state-of-the-art of wireless multimedia sensor networks, identifying the limitations and needs of these solutions. In this sense, in order to improve the trade-off between autonomous and computational capabilities, this paper proposes a heterogeneous multiprocessor sensor platform, consisting of an ultra-low power microcontroller and a high-performance processor, which transfers control between processors as needed. This architecture allows the shutdown of idle systems and fail-safe remote reprogramming. The sensor equipment can be adapted to the needs of the project. The deployed equipment incorporates, in addition to environmental meteorological variables, a microphone input and two cameras (visible and thermal) to capture multimedia data. In addition to the hardware description, the paper provides a brief description of how long-range (LoRa) can be used for sending large messages (such as an image or a new firmware), an economic analysis of the platform, and a study on energy consumption of the platform according to different use cases. Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer. The incidence of metastasis for cSCC is estimated to be around 1.2–5%. Ribosomal protein S6 (p-S6) and the p21 protein (p21) are two proteins that play central roles in other cancers. These proteins may be equally important in cSCC, and together, these could constitute a good candidate for metastasis risk assessment of these patients. We investigate the relationship of p-S6 and p21 expression with the impact on the prognosis of head and neck cSCC (cSCCHN). p-S6 and p21 expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry on paraffin-embedded tissue samples from 116 patients with cSCCHN and associations sought with clinical characteristics. Kaplan–Meier estimators and Cox proportional hazard regression models were also used. The expression of p-S6 was significantly inversely associated with tumor thickness, tumor size, desmoplastic growth, pathological stage, perineural invasion and tumor buds. p21 expression was significantly inversely correlated with >6 mm tumor thickness, desmoplastic growth, and perineural invasion. p-S6-negative expression significantly predicted an increased risk of nodal metastasis (HR = 2.63, 95% CI 1.51–4.54; p < 0.001). p21 expression was not found to be a significant risk factor for nodal metastasis. These findings demonstrate that p-S6-negative expression is an independent predictor of nodal metastasis. Background: Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetically determined intellectual disability. In recent decades, it has experienced an exponential increase in life expectancy, leading to a rise in age-related diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Specific health plans for the comprehensive care of the DS community are an unmet need, which is crucial for the early and accurate diagnosis of main medical comorbidities. We present the protocol of a newly created clinical and research cohort and its feasibility in real life. Methods: The Down Syndrome—Basque Alzheimer Initiative (DS-BAI) is a population-based, inclusive, multidisciplinary initiative for the clinical-assistance and clinical-biological research approach to aging in DS led by the CITA-Alzheimer Foundation (Donostia, Basque Country). It aims to achieve the following: (1) provide comprehensive care for adults with DS, (2) optimize access to rigorous and quality training for socio-family and healthcare references, and (3) create a valuable multimodal clinical-biological research platform. Results: During the first year, 114 adults with DS joined the initiative, with 36% of them showing symptoms indicative of AD. Furthermore, adherence to training programs for healthcare professionals and families has been high, and the willingness to collaborate in basic and translational research has been encouraging. We characterize compactness of T in terms of differentiability of the Lipschitz functions defined on X with values in another normed space Z. Furthermore, using a similar technique we can also characterize finite rank operators in terms of differentiability of a wider class of functions but still with Lipschitz flavour. Radiation is a key process in the atmosphere. Numerous radiative transfer codes have been developed spanning a large range of wavelengths, complexities, speeds, and accuracies. In the infrared and microwave, line-by-line codes are crucial esp. for modeling and analyzing high-resolution spectroscopic observations. Here we present Py4CAtS—PYthon scripts for Computational ATmospheric Spectroscopy, a Python re-implemen-tation of the Fortran Generic Atmospheric Radiation Line-by-line Code GARLIC, where computationally-intensive code sections use the Numeric/Scientific Python modules for highly optimized array processing. The individual steps of an infrared or microwave radiative transfer computation are implemented in separate scripts (and corresponding functions) to extract lines of relevant molecules in the spectral range of interest, to compute line-by-line cross sections for given pressure(s) and temperature(s), to combine cross sections to absorption coefficients and optical depths, and to integrate along the line-of-sight to transmission and radiance/intensity. Py4CAtS can be used in three ways: in the (Unix/Windows/Mac) console/terminal, inside the (I)Python interpreter, or Jupyter notebook. The basic design of the package, numerical and computational aspects relevant for optimization, and a sketch of the typical workflow are presented. Hypertensive lesions induce alterations at hemodynamic, peripheral, and central levels. Anandamide (N-arachidonoylethanolamine; AEA) protects neurons from inflammatory damage, but its free administration may cause central adverse effects. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of nanoformulated AEA (nf-AEA) on systolic blood pressure (SBP), behavior, and central/peripheral inflammatory, oxidative, and apoptotic state in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Male rats were used, both Wistar Kyoto (WKY) and SHR (n ​= ​10 per group), with/without treatment with nf-AEA (obtained by electrospraying) at a weekly dose of 5 ​mg/kg IP for 4 weeks. SBP was measured and behavioral tests were performed. Inflammatory/oxidative markers were quantified at the central (brain cortex) and peripheral (serum) level. SHR showed hyperactivity, low anxiety, and high concentrations of central/peripheral inflammatory/oxidative markers, also higher apoptosis of brain cortical cells compared to WKY. As opposed to this group, treatment with nf-AEA in SHR significantly reduced SBP, peripheral/central inflammatory/oxidative makers, and central apoptosis. Nf-AEA also increased neuroprotective mechanisms mediated by intracellular heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70), which were attenuated in untreated SHR. Additionally, nf-AEA reversed the abnormal behaviors observed in SHR without producing central adverse effects. Our results suggest protective properties of nf-AEA, both peripherally and centrally, through a signaling pathway that would involve the type I angiotensin II receptor, Wilms tumor transcription factor 1, Hsp70, and iNOS. Considering non-nf-AEA limitations, this nanoformulation could contribute to the development of new antihypertensive and behavioral disorder treatments associated with neuroinflammation. • Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis-interstitial lung disease is challenging. • Abatacept seems to be an effective therapy, regardless of the radiological pattern. • Early administration of abatacept may prevent progression of the disease. To compare the effectiveness of abatacept (ABA) in Rheumatoid Arthritis-associated Interstitial Lung Disease (RA-ILD) according to the radiological patterns of usual (UIP) or non-specific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP). From an observational longitudinal multicentre study of 263 RA-ILD patients treated with ABA, those with UIP or NSIP were selected. Lung function, chest high resolution computerised tomography (HRCT) and dyspnoea were recorded and compared in both groups from baseline to the end of follow-up (progression definitions: improvement or worsening >10% of FVC or DLCO, changes in HRCT extension and 1-point change in the mMRC scale, respectively). Differences between final and baseline visits were calculated as the average difference (95% CI) through mixed effects models regression. We studied 190 patients with UIP (n=106) and NSIP (n=84). General features were similar in both groups except for older age, positive rheumatoid factor, and previous sulfasalazine therapy, which were more frequent in patients with UIP. ILD duration up to ABA initiation was relatively short: median 16 [4-50] and 11 [2-36] months (p=0.36) in UIP and NSIP, respectively. Mean baseline FVC and DLCO were 82% and 63% in UIP and 89% and 65% in NSIP, respectively. Both parameters remained stable during 24 months with ABA. HRCT lesions and dyspnoea improved/stabilized in 73.1% and 90.5% and 72.9% and 94.6% of UIP and NSIP patterns, respectively. ABA seems equally effective in stabilizing dyspnoea, lung function and radiological impairment in both UIP and NSIP patterns of RA-ILD. Abstract Anti-felting processes with low environmental impacts are important for improving wool fiber attributes, especially if fiber is intended for the organic market. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of proteolytic enzymes, alone or in combination with Bacillus subtilis O9 biosurfactant (surfactin), to reduce felting of Merino wool top. Different concentrations of extracellular proteolytic extracts from Bacillus sp. G51 and Bacillus patagoniensis PATO5T were used to treat wool top. As indicated by the felt-ball test results, a significant decrease in wool felting tendency was achieved using 50 and 150 Enzyme Units (EU)/g wool of PATO5T and G51 proteases, respectively. Neither of these treatments caused a significant reduction in wool tensile strength. The addition of a pre-treatment step with biosurfactant surfactin, at a concentration above the Critical Micelle Concentration (CMC), further reduced felting tendency of wool. The combination of biosurfactant pre-treatment followed by B. patagoniensis PATO5T protease treatment rendered the significantly smallest felt-ball density (0.049 ± 0.004 g/cm3), without a significant loss in tensile strength. In PATO5T proteolytic extract, enzyme aggregates ≥100 kDa account for about 50% of the proteolytic activity. This could reduce the velocity of protease diffusion into wool fiber, promoting its action on wool surface. According to our knowledge, this is the first report that demonstrates the usefulness of a biosufactant in an environmental-friendly process aimed at reducing wool top felting. This paper outlines the matrix exponential description of radiative transfer. The eigendecomposition method which serves as a basis for computing the matrix exponential and for representing the solution in a discrete ordinate setting is considered. The mathematical equivalence of the discrete ordinate method, the matrix operator method, and the matrix Riccati equations method is proved rigorously by means of the matrix exponential formalism. For optically thin layers, approximate solution methods relying on the Padé and Taylor series approximations to the matrix exponential, as well as on the matrix Riccati equations, are presented. For optically thick layers, the asymptotic theory with higher-order corrections is derived, and parameterizations of the asymptotic functions and constants for a water-cloud model with a Gamma size distribution are obtained.
