Medium manganese steel represents a promising third-generation advanced high-strength steel. However, achieving excellent plasticity in high-yield-strength medium manganese steel remains challenging, particularly with lower alloying element contents. In this study, we employed an innovative stepwise warm rolling process on 5Mn medium manganese steel, developing a heterolamellar microstructure along the rolling direction. The resulting steel exhibited a yield strength exceeding 1.5 GPa while maintaining a uniform elongation of approximately 29%. The high yield strength is attributed to fine lamellar grains with high dislocation density, while the excellent uniform elongation is due to the synergistic effect of multiple plastic deformation mechanisms, which promoted prolonged strain hardening and delayed the onset of necking. These mechanisms include hetero-deformation induced (HDI) hardening generated during the early deformation of the heterolamellar structure, transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) effect-induced work hardening, and delamination cracking that alleviates interface strain concentration and delays material failure. Collectively, these mechanisms enabled the material to achieve an exceptionally high product of yield strength and uniform elongation of 45 GPa·%. This work provides new insights into the design of high-strength, ductile medium manganese steels, advancing the application of high-performance medium manganese steels.

Nature has long inspired technological innovations, fostering the rapidly developing field of bionics. Inspired by the microstructure of bamboo, we have developed a bamboo-like structure for steel. This novel steel achieves a tensile strength exceeding 1200 MPa and a uniform elongation nearing 68%, resulting in a product of strength and uniform elongation up to 83 GPa·%. The high strength of the steel is primarily attributed to its ultra-fine lamellar grains. Additionally, the graded occurrence of multiple deformation mechanisms collectively maintains its exceptional work-hardening capability. This study presents a new approach to enhancing the performance of medium-Mn steels.

Abstract Background Children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) are at risk of low bone mineral density (BMD) and bone fragility. This study aims to assess lumbar spine BMD measured by quantitative computed tomography (QCT) and investigate influencing factors of low BMD in children with SMA without disease-modifying treatment. Methods Demographic data, laboratory parameters, QCT data, and data on spinal radiographs were collected. A linear regression model was carried out to explore the correlations between BMD and its related factors. Results Sixty-six patients with SMA who had complete records between July 2017 and July 2023 were analyzed, with SMA with a mean age of 5.4 years (range, 2.4–9.7 years), including type 1 in 14, type 2 in 37, and type 3 in 15. 28.8% of patients (19/66) were diagnosed with low BMD (Z-scores ≤ − 2), and the mean BMD Z-scores on QCT was − 1.5 ± 1.0. In our model, BMD Z-scores was associated with age (β=-0.153, p = 0.001). SMA phenotype and serum bone metabolism markers, such as serum phosphorus (P), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and 25-Hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) levels did not independently predict low BMD. ROC analysis showed that the age ≥ 6.3 years predicts a Z-scores ≤ -2.0 with a sensitivity of 68.4% and a specificity of 68.1%. Conclusions Low BMD were highly prevalent in children with SMA without disease-modifying treatment in our centre. Regular monitoring of BMD is necessary for all types of SMA children, especially those aged ≥ 6.3 years.

Abstract It is not clear whether different radiation methods have different effects on enamel. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of single and fractionated radiation on enamel and caries susceptibility and to provide an experimental basis for further study of radiation‑related caries. Thirty-six caries-free human third molars were collected and randomly divided into three groups (n = 12). Group1 (control group) was not exposed to radiation. Group 2 received single radiation with a cumulative dose of 70 Gy. Group 3 underwent fractionated radiation, receiving 2 Gy/day for 5 days followed by a 2-day rest period, for a total of 7 weeks with a cumulative dose of 70 Gy. Changes in microhardness, roughness, surface morphology, bacterial adhesion and ability of acid resistance of each group were tested. Scanning electron microscope revealed that the enamel surface in both radiation groups exhibited unevenness and cracks. Compared with the control group, microhardness and acid resistance of enamel decreased, while roughness and bacterial adhesion increased in both the single radiation and fractionated radiation groups. Compared with the single radiation group, the enamel surface microhardness and acid resistance decreased in the fractionated radiation group, while roughness and bacterial adhesion increased. Both single radiation and fractionated radiation resulting in changes in the physical and biological properties of enamel, with these changes being more pronounced in the fractionated radiation group. Therefore, fractionated radiation is recommended as a more suitable method for constructing a radiation‑related caries model in vitro.

Abstract Background The aim of the study were as below. (1) To investigate the feasibility of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM)-based virtual magnetic resonance elastography (vMRE) to provide quantitative estimates of tissue stiffness in pulmonary neoplasms. (2) To verify the diagnostic performance of shifted apparent diffusion coefficient (sADC) and reconstructed virtual stiffness values in distinguishing neoplasm nature. Methods This study enrolled 59 patients (37 males, 22 females) with one pulmonary neoplasm who underwent computed tomography-guided percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy (PTNB) with pathological diagnosis (26 adenocarcinoma, 10 squamous cell carcinoma, 3 small cell carcinoma, 4 tuberculosis and 16 non-specific benign; mean age, 60.81 ± 9.80 years). IVIM was performed on a 3 T magnetic resonance imaging scanner before biopsy. sADC and virtual shear stiffness maps reflecting lesion stiffness were reconstructed. sADC and virtual stiffness values of neoplasm were extracted, and the diagnostic performance of vMRE in distinguishing benign and malignant and detailed pathological type were explored. Achieving exceptional ductility in ultra-high strength steels has long been a formidable challenge, particularly when the yield strength reaches 2.0 GPa. In this study, we have designed an innovative tri-phase lamellar microstructure in medium Mn steel that successfully achieves both an ultrahigh yield strength of approximately 2.0 GPa and an impressive uniform elongation ranging from 22.5 % to 24.5 %. The ultra-high yield strength of this steel is primarily due to the ultrafine lamellar grain with high-density dislocations and HDI strengthening resulting from meticulously designed tri-phase lamellae. The remarkable ductility is attributed to the synergistic action of multiple plasticity mechanisms. The inherently excellent plasticity of the lamellar ferrite, in coordination with the lamellar martensite, generates significant HDI hardening, thereby suppressing the onset of necking in the early stages of deformation. During the mid-stage of deformation, high strain activates the transformation-induced plasticity effect in the highly stable austenite, which remains stable due to substantial HDI hardening and effectively mitigates strain localization. In the later stages of deformation, delamination cracking relieves stress accumulation at the interfaces, delaying material failure. These mechanisms elevate yield strength and uniform elongation product to 47.3 GPa·%, showcasing the tri-phase lamellar structure’s potential for ultrahigh-strength, high-ductility steels.

It is estimated that up to 50 % of arable lands worldwide are acidic, and most crops are severely inhibited due to the high active aluminum (Al). Trifolium repens is an excellent legume forage with a certain acid tolerance, although it is affected by Al toxicity in acidic soil. In this study, physiological and transcriptomic responses of different white clover varieties were analyzed when exposed to a high-level of Al stress. The results revealed that Trifolium repens had a high level of Al toxicity tolerance, and accumulated nearly 70 % of Al3+ in its roots. Al toxicity significantly inhibited the root length and root activity, decreased the chlorophyll (Chl) content and photosynthetic pigments, while significantly increased the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci). The content of malondialdehyde (MDA), electrolyte leakage (EL), proline and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were significantly accumulated under Al stress. Furthermore, a total of 27,480 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified after the treatment. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis showed that most Al-responsive genes enriched to chloroplast thylakoid membrane, chloroplast stroma and photosynthesis in Haifa leaf while in MAG leaf highly enriched in response to regulation of defense response, which could induce the different tolerance of the two cultivars to Al stress. Besides, pectin methylesterase (PME), glycosyl transferases (GT1) and chalcone synthase genes associated with cell wall biosynthesis may improve the Al accumulation and enhance tolerance of Al toxicity. The results established here would help to understand the morphological structure, physiological and biochemical response, and molecular mechanism of white clover under Al tolerance.

Abstract In malaria parasites, the regulation of mRNA translation, storage and degradation during development and life-stage transitions remains largely unknown. Here, we functionally characterized the DEAD-box RNA helicase PfDOZI in P. falciparum. Disruption of pfdozi enhanced asexual proliferation but reduced sexual commitment and impaired gametocyte development. By quantitative transcriptomics, we show that PfDOZI is involved in the regulation of invasion-related genes and sexual stage-specific genes during different developmental stages. PfDOZI predominantly participates in processing body-like mRNPs in schizonts but germ cell granule-like mRNPs in gametocytes to impose opposing actions of degradation and protection on different mRNA targets. We further show the formation of stress granule-like mRNPs during nutritional deprivation, highlighting an essential role of PfDOZI-associated mRNPs in stress response. We demonstrate that PfDOZI participates in distinct mRNPs to maintain mRNA homeostasis in response to life-stage transition and environmental changes by differentially executing post-transcriptional regulation on the target mRNAs.

Shallow tunnels in urban areas are close to adjacent buildings and municipal pipelines. Ground surface settlement (GSS) due to tunnelling can cause damage to those infrastructures surrounded. Many methods have been proposed for evaluating ground settlement induced by tunnelling, including empirical, analytical, numerical and artificial intelligence methods. This paper reviews the proposed methods in detail based on published 677 articles within past ten years. The principles, assumptions and application scope of those methods are summarized and the advantages and limitations of each method are discussed. Since artificial intelligence (AI) become popular in recent few years, the application of AI in the aspect of tunnelling-induced ground deformation is introduced emphatically. Finally, the challenges of ground displacement prediction by machine learning (ML) are clarified and future research directions are suggested.

Abstract Background Orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.), a perennial forage, has the advantages of rich leaves, high yield, and good quality and is one of the most significant forage for grassland animal husbandry and ecological management in southwest China. Mitochondrial (mt) genome is one of the major genetic systems in plants. Studying the mt genome of the genus Dactylis could provide more genetic information in addition to the nuclear genome project of the genus. Results In this study, we sequenced and assembled two mitochondrial genomes of Dactylis species of D. glomerata (597, 281 bp) and D. aschersoniana (613, 769 bp), based on a combination of PacBio and Illumina. The gene content in the mitochondrial genome of D. aschersoniana is almost identical to the mitochondrial genome of D. glomerata, which contains 22–23 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 8 ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) and 30 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), while D. glomerata lacks the gene encoding the Ribosomal protein (rps1) and D. aschersoniana contains one pseudo gene (atp8). Twenty-three introns were found among eight of the 30 protein-coding genes, and introns of three genes (nad 1, nad2, and nad5) were trans-spliced in Dactylis aschersoniana. Further, our mitochondrial genome characteristics investigation of the genus Dactylis included codon usage, sequences repeats, RNA editing and selective pressure. The results showed that a large number of short repetitive sequences existed in the mitochondrial genome of D. aschersoniana, the size variation of two mitochondrial genomes is due largely to the presence of a large number of short repetitive sequences. We also identified 52–53 large fragments that were transferred from the chloroplast genome to the mitochondrial genome, and found that the similarity was more than 70%. ML and BI methods used in phylogenetic analysis revealed that the evolutionary status of the genus Dactylis. Conclusions Thus, this study reveals the significant rearrangements in the mt genomes of Pooideae species. The sequenced Dactylis mt genome can provide more genetic information and improve our evolutionary understanding of the mt genomes of gramineous plants.

Abstract In order to fulfill the complex cognitive behaviors in neuromorphic systems with reduced peripheral circuits, the reliable electronic synapses mimicked by single device that achieves diverse long‐term and short‐term plasticity are essential. Phase change random access memory (PCRAM) is of great potential for artificial synapses, which faces, however, difficulty to realize short‐term plasticity due to the long‐lasting resistance drift. This work reports the ruthenium‐doped Ge2Sb2Te5 (RuGST) based PCRAM, demonstrating a series of synaptic behaviors of short‐term potentiation, pair‐pulse facilitation, long‐term depression, and short‐term plasticity in the same single device. The optimized RuGST electronic synapse with the high transformation temperature of hexagonal phase >380°C, the outstanding endurance >108 cycles, the low resistance drift factor of 0.092, as well as the extremely high linearity with correlation coefficients of 0.999 and 0.976 in parts of potentiation and depression. Further investigations also go insight to mechanisms of Ru doping according to thorough microstructure characterization, revealing that Ru dopant is able to enter GST lattices thus changing and stabilizing atomic arrangement of GST. This leads to the short‐term plasticity realized by RuGST PCRAM. Eventually, the proposed RuGST electronic synapses performs a high accuracy of ~94.1% in a task of image recognition of CIFAR‐100 database using ResNet 101. This work promotes the development of PCRAM platforms for large‐scale neuromorphic systems.

Sea cucumber has emerged as a crucial economic species in aquaculture in China because of its remarkable nutritional and medicinal value. However, wild sea cucumber populations have experienced a decline due to overfishing and environmental factors, underscoring the urgent need for genetic resource conservation and biotechnology innovation within the sea cucumber aquaculture and breeding industry. The development of the sea cucumber industry is still impeded by challenges and difficulties. Nevertheless, significant progress has been made through the utilization of molecular markers, which have effectively addressed a number of fisheries and aquaculture issues. In recent years, diverse types of molecular markers including mitochondrial DNA, microsatellites, and SNP markers have been developed and extensively applied in various aspects of sea cucumber research. These markers play vital roles in genetic sex identification, germplasm resource evaluation, population structure assessment, as well as marker-assisted breeding in marine ranching and sea cucumber aquaculture and breeding industry. This review provides an overview of the fundamental principles, functions, and characteristics associated with various markers employed across various sea cucumber species while also discussing their applications within different aspects of the sea cucumber fisheries, aquaculture, and breeding industry.

Abstract Genetic diversity, a fundamental aspect of biodiversity, greatly influences the ecological and evolutionary characteristics of populations and species. Compiling genetic data is crucial as the initial step in comprehending and applying genetic resources; however, regional collating work is still insufficient, especially in marine ecosystems. Here, by conducting a thorough literature search and quality-control procedures, we provide a dataset of genetic diversity studies on marine species in the China Seas. The final dataset comprised a total of 746 studies (encompassing 840 data sets and 3658 populations) across 343 species from 1998 to 2022. For each data set, information including publication year, publication language, studied species, belonged taxonomic group, applied molecular markers, and sampling strategies (number of populations, total number of individuals, etc.) was collated to analyse the scope, strengths, and omissions of these works. This dataset offers a comprehensive overview of genetic diversity studies in the China Seas, which may help to adjust future research focuses, promote conservation and macrogenetics studies in this region, and also facilitate regional cooperation.

Abstract Jaw cysts commonly affect the oral and maxillofacial region, involving adjacent tooth roots. The management of these teeth, particularly regarding root canal therapy and apicoectomy, lacks consensus. This study introduces a novel treatment concept and refined surgical approach to preserve pulp viability in teeth involved in jaw cysts. The objective was to investigate the effectiveness and potential benefits of this approach over a 36-month follow-up period. A conservative management approach prioritized vitality preservation, reserving root canal treatment and apicectomy for cases with post-operative discomfort. A comprehensive follow-up of 108 involved teeth from 36 jaw cyst cases treated with the modified method was conducted. Clinical observation, X-ray imaging, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), and pulp vitality testing assessed changes in cyst size, tooth color, pulp vitality, root structure, and surrounding alveolar bone. After 36 months, our modified surgical approach successfully preserved tooth vitality in 84 involved teeth. Adverse symptoms in 19 teeth, such as redness, swelling, fistula, and pain, resolved with postoperative root canal therapy. Follow-up was lost for five teeth in two cases. No cyst recurrences were observed, and in 34 cases, the bone cavity gradually disappeared, restoring normal bone density during long-term follow-up. Our modified surgical method effectively preserves tooth vitality in jaw cysts. This innovative approach has the potential to improve the management of teeth involved in jaw cysts.

At the initial phases of tunnel design, information on rock properties is often limited. In such instances, the engineering classification of the rock is recommended as a primary assessment of its geotechnical condition. This paper reviews different rock mass classification methods in the tunnel industry. First, some important considerations for the classification of rock are discussed, such as rock quality designation (RQD), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and groundwater condition. Traditional rock classification methods are then assessed, including the rock structure rating (RSR), rock mass rating (RMR), rock mass index (RMI), geological strength index (GSI) and tunnelling quality index (Q system). As RMR and the Q system are two commonly used methods, the relationships between them are summarized and explored. Subsequently, we introduce the detailed application of artificial intelligence (AI) method on rock classification. The advantages and limitations of traditional methods and artificial intelligence (AI) methods are indicated, and their application scopes are clarified. Finally, we provide suggestions for the selection of rock classification methods and prospect the possible future research trends.

Abstract Tourette syndrome (TS) is a developmental neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by repetitive, stereotyped, involuntary tics, the neurological basis of which remains unclear. Although traditional resting-state MRI (rfMRI) studies have identified abnormal static functional connectivity (FC) in patients with TS, dynamic FC (dFC) remains relatively unexplored. The rfMRI data of 54 children with TS and 46 typically developing children (TDC) were analyzed using group independent component analysis to obtain independent components (ICs), and a sliding-window approach to generate dFC matrices. All dFC matrices were clustered into two reoccurring states, the state transition metrics were obtained. We conducted Granger causality and nodal topological analyses to further investigate the brain regions that may play the most important roles in driving whole-brain switching between different states. Abstract Background Ceramide metabolism is crucial in the progress of brain metastasis (BM). However, it remains unexplored whether targeting ceramide metabolism may arrest BM. Methods RNA sequencing was applied to screen different genes in primary and metastatic foci and whole-exome sequencing (WES) to seek crucial abnormal pathway in BM + and BM-patients. Cellular arrays were applied to analyze the permeability of blood–brain barrier (BBB) and the activation or inhibition of pathway. Database and Co-Immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) assay were adopted to verify the protein–protein interaction. Xenograft and zebrafish model were further employed to verify the cellular results. Results RNA sequencing and WES reported the involvement of RPTOR and ceramide metabolism in BM progress. RPTOR was significantly upregulated in BM foci and increased the permeability of BBB, while RPTOR deficiency attenuated the cell invasiveness and protected extracellular matrix. Exogenous RPTOR boosted the SPHK2/S1P/STAT3 cascades by binding YY1, in which YY1 bound to the regions of SPHK2 promoter (at -353 ~ -365 nt), further promoting the expression of SPHK2. The latter was rescued by YY1 RNAi. Xenograft and zebrafish model showed that RPTOR blockade suppressed BM of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and impaired the SPHK2/S1P/STAT3 pathway. Conclusion RPTOR is a key driver gene in the brain metastasis of lung cancer, which signifies that RPTOR blockade may serve as a promising therapeutic candidate for clinical application.

Background: Activation of the Hedgehog signaling pathway is linked to the initiation and development of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, its impact on clinical outcomes and the HCC microenvironment remains unclear. Methods: We performed comprehensive analyses of Hedgehog pathway genes in a large cohort of HCC patients. Specifically, we utilized univariate Cox regression analysis to identify Hedgehog genes linked to overall survival, and the LASSO algorithm was used to construct a Hedgehog-related gene pattern. We subsequently examined the correlation between the Hedgehog pattern and the HCC microenvironment employing the CIBERSORT and ssGSEA algorithms. Furthermore, Tumor Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion (TIDE) algorithm and the anti-PD-L1 treatment dataset (IMvigor210) are used to evaluate the clinical response of the Hedgehog pattern in predicting immune checkpoint inhibitors. Results: We found that the Hedgehog activation score (HHAS), a prognostic score based on 11 Hedgehog genes, was significantly associated with HCC patient survival. Patients exhibiting high HHAS experienced markedly reduced survival rates compared to those with low HHAS, and HHAS emerged as an independent prognostic factor for HCC. Functional enrichment analysis unveiled the association of the HHAS phenotype with functions related to the immune system, and further investigation demonstrated that HCC patients exhibiting low HHAS displayed elevated levels of anti-tumor immune activation in CD8+ T cells, while high HHAS were linked to immune escape phenotypes and increased infiltration of immune suppressive cells. In addition, in the Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor (ICI) cohort of IMvigor210, patients with higher HHAS had worse ICI treatment outcomes and shortened survival time, indicating that the HHAS is a useful indicator for predicting patient response to immunotherapy. Conclusions: In summary, our study offers valuable insights for advancing research on Hedgehog and its impact on tumor immunity, which provides an opportunity to optimize prognosis and immune therapy for HCC.

Abstract Asterias amurensis has attracted widespread concern because of its population outbreaks, which has impacted fisheries and aquaculture, as well as disrupting local ecosystems. A high-quality reference genome is necessary to better investigate mechanisms of outbreak and adaptive changes. Combining PacBio HiFi and Hi-C sequencing data, we generated a chromosome-level A. amurensis genome with a size of 491.53 Mb. The contig N50 and scaffold N50 were 8.05 and 23.75 Mb, respectively. The result of BUSCO analysis revealed a completeness score of 98.85%. A total of 16,531 protein-coding genes were predicted in the genome, of which 94.63% were functionally annotated. The high-quality genome assembly resulting from this study will provide a valuable genetic resource for future research on the mechanism of population outbreaks and invasion ecology.

Abstract Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. CNOT3, a subunit of the CCR4-NOT complex, has recently been suggested to be overexpressed in lung cancer and involved in tumor malignancy. However, its precise role and the underlying mechanisms still need to be fully revealed. In the present study, we found in lung cancer cells the expression of CNOT3 could be regulated by EGFR signaling pathway and c-Jun, a transcription factor downstream of EGFR, transcriptionally regulated its expression. Interestingly, CNOT3 could inversely regulate the expression of c-Jun via modulating its translation. Thus, a feedback loop existed between c-Jun and CNOT3. CNOT3 reduction post EGFR blockade facilitated the drug-induced cell death, and simultaneously inhibited cell proliferation via impacting TSC1/mTOR axis. Whereas, further up-regulation of the CNOT3 expression was observed in gefitinib-resistant cells, which dampened gefitinib sensitivity. Mechanically, the elevation of CNOT3 was induced by the bypass activation of HER2/c-Jun signaling. Depleting CNOT3 in vitro and in vivo sensitized the drug-resistant cells to gefitinib treatment and inhibited metastatic progression. These results give novel insights into the role of CNOT3 in lung cancer malignancy and provide a theoretical basis for the development of therapeutic strategies to solve acquired resistance to EGFR-TKIs.

Abstract Background UTE has been used to depict lung parenchyma. However, the insufficient discussion of its performance in pediatric pneumonia compared with conventional sequences is a gap in the existing literature. The objective of this study was to compare the diagnostic value of 3D-UTE with that of 3D T1-GRE and T2-FSE sequences in young children diagnosed with pneumonia. Methods Seventy-seven eligible pediatric patients diagnosed with pneumonia at our hospital, ranging in age from one day to thirty-five months, were enrolled in this study from March 2021 to August 2021. All patients underwent imaging using a 3 T pediatric MR scanner, which included three sequences: 3D-UTE, 3D-T1 GRE, and T2-FSE. Subjective analyses were performed by two experienced pediatric radiologists based on a 5-point scale according to six pathological findings (patchy shadows/ground-glass opacity (GGO), consolidation, nodule, bulla/cyst, linear opacity, and pleural effusion/thickening). Additionally, they assessed image quality, including the presence of artifacts, and evaluated the lung parenchyma. Interrater agreement was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Differences among the three sequences were evaluated using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results The visualization of pathologies in most parameters (patchy shadows/GGO, consolidation, nodule, and bulla/cyst) was superior with UTE compared to T2-FSE and T1 GRE. The visualization scores for linear opacity were similar between UTE and T2-FSE, and both were better than T1-GRE. In the case of pleural effusion/thickening, T2-FSE outperformed the other sequences. However, statistically significant differences between UTE and other sequences were only observed for patchy shadows/GGO and consolidation. The overall image quality was superior or at least comparable with UTE compared to T2-FSE and T1-GRE. Interobserver agreements for all visual assessments were significant and rated “substantial” or “excellent.” Conclusions In conclusion, UTE MRI is a useful and promising method for evaluating pediatric pneumonia, as it provided better or similar visualization of most imaging findings compared with T2-FSE and T1-GRE. We suggest that the UTE MRI is well-suited for pediatric population, especially in younger children with pneumonia who require longitudinal and repeated imaging for clinical care or research and are susceptible to ionizing radiation.

The hot compression tests of Fe–28Mn–11Al–1.5C–5Cr (wt.%) lightweight steel were carried out by Gleeble-3500 at temperature of 900, 1050 and 1150 °C with strain rates of 0.01 and 1 s−1. The effect of various precipitates on the hot deformation mechanism and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mechanism was studied by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). When deformed at 900 °C, the dislocations tend to cut through intragranular κ carbides to form unidirectional microbands and deformation twins. The intergranular precipitates (intergranular κ carbides, B2 (FeAl type) precipitates and (Cr,Mn)23C6 precipitates) hinder the migration of the original grain boundaries, so that the discontinuous DRX (DDRX) is suppressed at the initial stage, but with the increase of strain, the dislocations accumulate at the grain boundaries to promote the nucleation of DRX grains. Meanwhile, the nucleation of DRX grains by continuous DRX (CDRX) mechanism within grains is also activated. Therefore, bimodal distribution of DRX grains is formed at low strain rate of 0.01 s−1, while the degree of DRX is low at high strain rate of 1 s−1. When the deformation temperature is 1050 °C, the content of microbands and deformation twins decreases. There are only a few B2 precipitates at the grain boundaries, so the original grain boundaries tend to bulge to promote DDRX nucleation. When deformed at 1150 °C, large-sized κ carbides are easily formed near the dislocations due to the fast diffusion rate of atoms, which inhibits the formation of microbands and deformation twins, and only slip bands are observed. There is no precipitate on the grain boundary, and the DDRX is the dominant mechanism of DRX. Moreover, the special yield-point-like elongation phenomenon has been proved to be caused by intragranular κ carbides.

Fe–Mn–xAl–C steel ingots have been fabricated by vacuum melting with Al compositions varied from x = 0 to 3 and 5 wt.%, respectively. After properly hot-forging and hot-rolling as well as solution heat treatments, impact toughness tests were carried out at 77 K using a standard full-size of Charpy impact V-notch configuration. It was found that the addition of Al element is more conducive to enhance the cryogenic toughness. The relationship between the cryogenic toughness and the Al composition has been revealed through detailed microstructural studies by electron back scatter diffraction and transmission-electron microscopy. The stack fault energy (SFE) increases with the increase of Al content at various temperature. The plastic deformation is dominated by deformation bands which are dominated by deformation twins (DTs) and ε-martensite at x = 0 and DTs at x = 3 and 5%, respectively. The DTs near fracture the notch-tip area increased in the order of the 0Al, 3Al, and 5Al steel. The DTs with high density, together with their contented dislocations, significantly contributed to the high cryogenic toughness of the studied high manganese steel with higher Al content. Banded ε-martensite will deterioration cryogenic toughness due to its large size compared to DTs at 0Al steel.

In traditional slope stability analysis, it is assumed that some “average” or appropriately “conservative” properties operate over the entire region of interest. This kind of deterministic conservative analysis often results in higher costs, and thus, a stochastic analysis considering uncertainty and spatial variability was developed to reduce costs. In the past few decades, machine learning has been greatly developed and extensively used in stochastic slope stability analysis, particularly used as surrogate models to improve computational efficiency. To better summarize the current application of machine learning and future research, this paper reviews 159 studies of supervised learning published in the past 20 years. The achievements of machine learning methods are summarized from two aspects—safety factor prediction and slope stability classification. Four potential research challenges and suggestions are also given.

Abstract Linear biometric measurements on magnetic resonance images are important for the assessment of fetal brain development, which is expert knowledge dependent and laborious. This study aims to construct a segmentation-based method for automatic two-dimensional biometric measurements of fetal brain on magnetic resonance images that provides a fast and accurate measurement of fetal brain. A total of 268 volumes (5360 images) magnetic resonance images of normal fetuses were included. The automatic method involves two steps. First, the fetal brain was segmented into four parts with a deep segmentation network: cerebrum, cerebellum, and left and right lateral ventricles. Second, the measurement plane was determined, and the corresponding biometric parameters were calculated according to clinical guidelines, including cerebral biparietal diameter (CBPD), transverse cerebellar diameter (TCD), left and right atrial diameter (LAD/RAD). Pearson correlation coefficient and Bland–Altman plots were used to assess the correlation and agreement between computer-predicted values and manual measurements. Mean differences were used to evaluate the errors quantitatively. Analysis of fetal cerebral growth based on the automatic measurements was also displayed. The experiment results show that correlation coefficients for CBPD, TCD, LAD and RAD were as follows: 0.977, 0.990, 0.817, 0.719, mean differences were − 2.405 mm, − 0.008 mm, − 0.33 mm, − 0.213 mm, respectively. The correlation between the errors and gestational age was not statistically significant (p values were 0.2595, 0.0510, 0.1995, and 0.0609, respectively). The proposed automatic method for linear measurements on fetal brain MRI achieves excellent performance, which is expected to be applied in clinical practice and be helpful for prenatal diagnosis and clinical work efficiency improvement.

Abstract Background Immunoblockade therapy based on the PD-1 checkpoint has greatly improved the survival rate of patients with skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM). However, existing anti-PD-1 therapeutic efficacy prediction markers often exhibit a poor situation of poor reliability in identifying potential beneficiary patients in clinical applications, and an ideal biomarker for precision medicine is urgently needed. Methods 10 multicenter cohorts including 4 SKCM cohorts and 6 immunotherapy cohorts were selected. Through the analysis of WGCNA, survival analysis, consensus clustering, we screened 36 prognostic genes. Then, ten machine learning algorithms were used to construct a machine learning-derived immune signature (MLDIS). Finally, the independent data sets (GSE22153, GSE54467, GSE59455, and in-house cohort) were used as the verification set, and the ROC index standard was used to evaluate the model. Results Based on computing framework, we found that patients with high MLDIS had poor overall survival and has good prediction performance in all cohorts and in-house cohort. It is worth noting that MLDIS performs better in each data set than almost all models which from 51 prognostic signatures for SKCM. Meanwhile, high MLDIS have a positive prognostic impact on patients treated with anti-PD-1 immunotherapy by driving changes in the level of infiltration of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment. Additionally, patients suffering from SKCM with high MLDIS were more sensitive to immunotherapy. Conclusions Our study identified that MLDIS could provide new insights into the prognosis of SKCM and predict the immunotherapy response in patients with SKCM.

Carbide-free nano-bainite steel holds significant potential for applications in mining as an ultra-high strength wear-resistant steel, but the wear mechanisms are not yet fully understood. This study aims to explore the effect of austempering temperature on microstructure, mechanical properties and wear resistance of carbide-free nano-bainitic steel. The relationship between the content and mechanical stability of retained austenite (RA) and mechanical properties was investigated to elucidate the mechanisms of pin-on-disc wear and impact wear. The results show that in the range of Ms∼300 °C, the phase transformation incubation period and completion time significantly increase with decreasing austempering temperature, which is mainly related to higher phase transformation driving force resulting from a larger subcooling degree and slow growth of carbon content in RA. Optimal strength and hardness of 2099 MPa and 615 HBW, respectively, are achieved after austempering at 210 °C for 83 h. Austempering at 270 °C for 11 h yields the best balance of strength and plasticity, with a strength-plasticity product of 28.8 GPa%. The micro-cutting mechanism of pin-on-disc wear leads to serious weight loss. The RA with poor mechanical stability accelerates the stress-induced martensite transformation, while internal stress support due to volume expansion reduces the penetration depth of abrasive particles. The weight loss in impact wear is primarily caused by shedding due to fatigue failure. With the increase of RA content and mechanical stability, the persistent stress-induced martensite transformation effectively hinders micro-crack propagation, thereby enhancing impact wear resistance.

In this study, the enhanced passivation effect of Cr-modified rebar compared with carbon rebar has been explored with regard to the formation process of the passive film, which could provide a theoretical basis for the development and application of concrete materials in harsh environments. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and capacitance-potential method were used to investigate the composition, structural depth distribution, and semiconductive properties of passive films formed by Cr-modified rebar and carbon rebar in simulated concrete pore solutions with different pH. The kinetics of passive film growth and formation were analyzed by tracking tests of potentiostatic current transients and open circuit potential under natural aeration. The results show that the activation energy of Cr-modified rebar is lower at 14.59 kJ/mol, compared to carbon rebar's 25.36 kJ/mol. In the early stage, Cr-modified rebar can achieve a thinner, more stable initial film in a shorter time than carbon rebar. The rate of reduction of the initial thickening rate of the passive film on Cr-modified rebar is five times than that of carbon rebar per unit pH. The film growth rate after early stage of Cr-modified rebar decreases, whereas that of carbon steel increases, with decreasing pH. The passive film containing Cr oxide or hydroxide enhances the barrier effect of the oxide film to ion migration, and the re-dissociation of Fe oxide hinders the passivation process. This grants the thickness of the stable passive film of the two rebars changing oppositely and the Cr-modified rebar compared to carbon rebar enhance passivation with pH falling.

In recent years, the development of environmentally friendly, lead-free ferroelectric films with prominent electrostrictive effects have been a key area of focus due to their potential applications in micro-actuators, sensors, and transducers for advanced microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). This work investigated the enhanced electrostrictive effect in lead-free sodium bismuth titanate-based relaxor ferroelectric films. The films, composed of (Bi0.5Na0.5)0.8−xBaxSr0.2TiO3 (BNBST, x = 0.02, 0.06, and 0.11), with thickness around 1 μm, were prepared using a sol-gel method on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates. By varying the Ba2+ content, the crystal structure, morphology, and electrical properties, including dielectric, ferroelectric, strain, and electromechanical performance, were investigated. The films exhibited a single pseudocubic structure without preferred orientation. A remarkable strain response (S > 0.24%) was obtained in the films (x = 0.02, 0.06) with the coexistence of nonergodic and ergodic relaxor phases. Further, in the x = 0.11 thick films with an ergodic relaxor state, an ultrahigh electrostrictive coefficient Q of 0.32 m4/C2 was achieved. These findings highlight the potential of BNBST films as high-performance, environmentally friendly electrostrictive films for advanced microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and electronic devices.

Soil pollution by heavy metals is a serious environmental concern globally. Hexavalent (VI) chromium (Cr) is one of the main pollutants causing groundwater and soil heavy metal pollution. Miscanthus sinensis is a C4 perennial grass species with a high level of heavy metal tolerance. This species can effectively remove Cr from soils and maintain desirable biomass production under Cr stress. This research aimed to characterize and compare Cr accumulation in 58 genotypes of M. sinensis and to develop Expressed Sequence Tag–Simple Sequence Repeat (EST-SSR) markers associated with Cr tolerance. The results show that the pattern of translocation of Cr in plants differed among the 58 M. sinensis genotypes following treatment of 200 mg/L of Cr6+; however, in most genotypes, the Cr was primarily accumulated in roots. A total of 43,367 EST-SSRs were identified, and 88 EST-SSR primer pairs corresponding to candidate genes involved in Cr accumulation in M. sinensis were selected for validation. Subsequently, 170 polymorphic loci generated from 24 validated EST-SSRs were used for the population structure and marker–trait association analysis. Based on a general linear model (GLM), a total of 46 associations were identified (p < 0.05), with 14 EST-SSRs markers associated with target traits. Among them, four genes related to ABC transporters, wall-associated receptor kinases, as well as two high-affinity sulfate transporters (ST), were identified under Cr stress (p < 0.05). The results of this study help to accelerate the screening across M. sinensis genotypes for desirable traits under Cr stress and provide a platform for M. sinensis genetic improvement and molecular-marker-assisted breeding.

Abstract Background On the basis of visual-dependent reading method, radiological recognition and assessment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (NH) or acute bilirubin encephalopathy (ABE) on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences are challenging. Prior studies had shown that radiomics was possible to characterize ABE-induced intensity and morphological changes on MRI sequences, and it has emerged as a desirable and promising future in quantitative and objective MRI data extraction. To investigate the utility of radiomics based on T1-weighted sequences for identifying neonatal ABE in patients with hyperbilirubinemia and differentiating between those with NH and the normal controls. Methods A total of 88 patients with NH were enrolled, including 50 patients with ABE and 38 ABE-negative individuals, and 70 age-matched normal neonates were included as controls. All participants were divided into training and validation cohorts in a 7:3 ratio. Radiomics features extracted from the basal ganglia of T1-weighted sequences on magnetic resonance imaging were evaluated and selected to set up the prediction model using the K-nearest neighbour-based bagging algorithm. A receiver operating characteristic curve was plotted to assess the differentiating performance of the radiomics-based model. Results Four of 744 radiomics features were selected for the diagnostic model of ABE. The radiomics model yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.81 and 0.82 in the training and test cohorts, with accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and specificity of 0.82, 0.80, 0.91, and 0.69 and 0.78, 0.8, 0.8, and 0.75, respectively. Six radiomics features were selected in this model to distinguish those with NH from the normal controls. The AUC for the training cohort was 0.97, with an accuracy of 0.92, a precision of 0.92, a sensitivity of 0.93, and a specificity of 0.90. The performance of the radiomics model was confirmed by testing the test cohort, and the AUC, accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and specificity were 0.97, 0.92, 0.96, 0.89, and 0.95, respectively. Conclusions The proposed radiomics model based on traditional TI-weighted sequences may be used effectively for identifying ABE and even differentiating patients with NH from the normal controls, which can provide microcosmic information beyond experience-dependent vision and potentially assist in clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract Effective and safe delivery of small interfering RNA (siRNA) by nanomaterials to cancer cells is one of the main challenges in cancer treatment. In this study, we constructed the selenium nanoparticles conjugated with RGDfC (one tumor-targeted polypeptide) to prepare a biocompatible gene vector (RGDfC-SeNPs) and then loaded with siDCBLD2 to synthesize the RGDfC-Se@siDCBLD2 for colorectal cancer (CRC) therapy. As expected, RGDfC-SeNPs could enhance the cellular uptake of siDCBLD2 in human HCT-116 colon cancer cells by targeting polypeptide RGDfC on the surface of colon cancer cells. RGDfC-Se@siDCBLD2 could be effectively internalized by HCT-116 cells mainly through a clathrin-related endocytosis pathway. In addition, RGDfC-Se@siDCBLD2 exhibited high siRNA release efficiency in an acidic tumor environment. Moreover, RGDfC-Se@siDCBLD2 could inhibit the proliferation and induce apoptosis in HCT-116 cells by special silencing gene DCBLD2 expression. RGDfC-Se@siDCBLD2 could be specifically accumulated to the tumor sites and exhibited significantly anti-CRC efficacy on HCT-116 tumor-bearing mice without obvious side effects. Taken together, these results suggest that selenium nanoparticles can be used as an effective gene vector with good biocompatibility, and RGDfC-Se@siDCBLD2 provides a promising strategy for combining tumor-target and siRNA delivery in treating CRC.

Heterostructured austenitic stainless steels (ASS) are becoming a significant research area because of their outstanding mechanical properties and considerable potential for various applications. However, the thermal stability of heterogeneous microstructures, particularly the bimodal microstructure, has received limited attention and lacks systematic investigation. Additionally, there is a scarcity of reports regarding the biocompatibility of bimodal microstructures. Herein, the thermal stability and biocompatibility of the bimodal microstructure prepared by cold rolling and annealing in Cr–Mn–N series ASS (without and with Nb microalloying) are studied. The findings demonstrate that the bimodal microstructures of ASS are formed after annealing at 700 °C, 800 °C, and short-time annealing at 900 °C. Moreover, the addition of Nb significantly enhances the thermal stability of the bimodal microstructure and maintains the bimodal feature up to 1000 °C. The thermal stability of bimodal microstructures depends on the competition in coarse and fine grains growth. The good thermal stability of Nb(C, N) at high temperatures leads to consistently higher pinning force within the fine-grained zone. As a result, the growth of fine grains lags behind that of coarse grains, which leads to the persistence of bimodal microstructure at higher temperatures. The bimodal microstructure of ASS demonstrates superior biocompatibility, attributed to its ability to promote higher cell viability, exhibit stronger fibronectin intensity, and facilitate a wider fibronectin expression network in osteoblasts. These characteristics make the bimodal ASS more favorable for osteoblast attachment and proliferation compared to its coarse-grained counterpart. This study significantly enhances our understanding of the thermal stability and cellular functionality of bimodal ASS, highlighting its potential for various biomedical applications.

A flash tempering process has been demonstrated for low-carbon low-alloy lath martensite, which includes heating the sample to 750 °C (Ac1: 752 °C), dwelling at 750 °C for 2 s, and quenching directly to room temperature. The high temperature accelerated the spread of the supersaturated carbon atoms in the lath martensite, activated the dislocation migrations and thus their combining and annihilation, and promoted the mass recrystallisation. The reduced dwelling time inhibited the coarsening of the martensitic laths and suppressed the growth of the recrystallized structures. The combination of higher temperature and the shorter dwelling period, so-called flash tempering, gives rise to the same microstructure and mechanical properties as those obtained by the conventional tempering process (i.e., dwelling at 600 °C for 1 h). The high efficient flash tempering, possessing significantly reduced energy and time consumptions, may have important consequence in industrialization of tempering process.

ObjectiveThis study investigated the positive rate and related influencing factors of anxiety screening in pregnant women during the first fetal magnetic resonance examination.MethodsA total of 303 pregnant women who met the criteria for magnetic resonance pregnancy examination in a Grade III maternity hospital from December 2021 to December 2022 were included by the convenience sampling method. A cross-sectional survey was conducted before the examination using the General Situation Questionnaire and Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS).ResultsThe positive rate of anxiety was 31.02% (94/303), and the average score of anxiety was 45.71±9.84. Univariate analysis results showed that age, educational level, occupation, place of residence, per capita monthly income, and number of pregnancies were related to the anxiety status of pregnant women in the fetal magnetic resonance examination (PConclusionsThe positive rate of anxiety screening of pregnant women before the first prenatal magnetic resonance examination is high. A low education level and living in the countryside will increase the probability of anxiety in pregnant women during magnetic resonance examination. Based on the above research results, it is suggested that medical institutions pay attention to the mental health of pregnant women, improve mental health care services, and reduce the adverse psychological problems caused by prenatal examination.

ObjectiveTo meet the efficient thermal management needs of electronic devices such as ships and underwater vehicles, this study focuses on the constructal design of a tree-shaped microchannel disc heat sink with wavy walls. MethodA design prototype of the heat sink with wavy walls is first proposed. Based on constructal theory, the amplitude and wavelength of the wavy walls are designed under the constraints of fixed heat sink volume and fixed microchannel volume by maximizing the comprehensive performance evaluation criteria (PEC) while considering both heat transfer and flow pressure drop. ResultsThe results show that the wavy walls increase the heat transfer surface areas and generate vortices in their cavities, effectively reducing the maximum temperature. When the inlet Reynolds number is fixed at 700, 900 or 1100 respectively, the maximum temperature is reduced by 13.5 K by increasing the amplitude of the wavy walls, while the pressure drop increases significantly; and the maximum temperature is reduced by 4.7 K by reducing the wavelength of the wavy walls, while the pressure drop increases slightly. There are optimal amplitudes that raise the comprehensive performance evaluation criteria to extreme values for given larger wavelengths, while the comprehensive performance evaluation criteria increase monotonously as the amplitude increases for given smaller wavelengths. ConclusionWavy walls can significantly improve the thermal performance of tree-shaped microchannel disc heat sinks, and the use of constructal design can realize optimal geometric constructs with optimal comprehensive performance evaluation criteria.

Abstract COVID-19 has seriously threatened public health, and transdermal vaccination is an effective way to prevent pathogen infection. Microneedles (MNs) can damage the stratum corneum to allow passive diffusion of vaccine macromolecules, but the delivery efficiency is low, while iontophoresis can actively promote transdermal delivery but fails to transport vaccine macromolecules due to the barrier of the stratum corneum. Herein, we developed a wearable iontophoresis-driven MN patch and its iontophoresis-driven device for active and efficient transdermal vaccine macromolecule delivery. Polyacrylamide/chitosan hydrogels with good biocompatibility, excellent conductivity, high elasticity, and a large loading capacity were prepared as the key component for vaccine storage and active iontophoresis. The transdermal vaccine delivery strategy of the iontophoresis-driven MN patch is “press and poke, iontophoresis-driven delivery, and immune response”. We demonstrated that the synergistic effect of MN puncture and iontophoresis significantly promoted transdermal vaccine delivery efficiency. In vitro experiments showed that the amount of ovalbumin delivered transdermally using the iontophoresis-driven MN patch could be controlled by the iontophoresis current. In vivo immunization studies in BALB/c mice demonstrated that transdermal inoculation of ovalbumin using an iontophoresis-driven MN patch induced an effective immune response that was even stronger than that of traditional intramuscular injection. Moreover, there was little concern about the biosafety of the iontophoresis-driven MN patch. This delivery system has a low cost, is user-friendly, and displays active delivery, showing great potential for vaccine self-administration at home.

Lead-free bismuth sodium titanate (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3 (BNT) and related solid solutions are potential piezoelectric materials for such applications as actuators and transducers if their excellent strain responses and piezoelectric properties can be optimized. In this work, a large strain response of 0.61% is achieved in lead-free (0.94-x%)(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3-0.06BaTiO3-x%NaNbO3 (x = 0 –6, BNT-6BT-xNN) ceramics with the composition of x = 3.5 in a pseudo-cubic structure. Coexistence of ferroelectric (FE) and relaxor (RE) domain structures is observed in all the unpoled ceramics and the enhanced strain response is believed to be related to the evolution of the ergodic relaxor (ER) and non-ergodic (NR) states thanks to the substitution of antiferroelectric NN. BNT-6BT-3.5NN is a critical composition near the FE/NR/ER phase boundary close to room temperature (RT) and its high strain response arises from a synergistic combination of a reversible electric-field-induced phase transition and an active domain switching in the mixed NR/ER state. This work provides new insights into the dynamic interplay between mesoscopic domains and macroscopic electrical properties in the BNT-based piezoceramics.

In this study, we investigate the impact of prior ferrite on the bainite transformation kinetics and microstructure of medium-carbon steel interrupted by an intercritical annealing (IAA) process. It was found that the incubation time and completion time decreased from 687 s and 6018 s to 20 s and 4680 s, with the volume fraction of ferrite increasing from 9.5% to 28.6%, while the maximum transformation rate increased from 00271 μm/s to 0.0436 μm/s. The ferrite/austenite interface is introduced, and the nucleation sites are increased to accelerate the subsequent bainite transformation due to the formation of prior ferrite. However, there is a competitive relationship between the number and activation energy of bainite nucleation. According to the experimental results and theoretical calculations, the activation energy of the bainite transformation in the medium-carbon bainite steel decreases gradually with an increase in the volume fraction of prior ferrite.

Soil health is seriously threatened by the overuse of chemical fertilizers in agricultural management. Biogas slurry is often seen as an organic fertilizer resource that is rich in nutrients, and its use has the goal of lowering the amount of chemical fertilizers used while preserving crop yields and soil health. However, the application of continuous biogas slurry has not yet been studied for its long-term impact on soil nutrients and microbial communities in a rotation system of annual ryegrass-silage maize (Zea mays). This study aimed to investigate the impacts on the chemical properties and microbial community of farmland soils to which chemical fertilizer (NPK) (225 kg ha−1), biogas slurry (150 t ha−1), and a combination (49.5 t ha−1 biogas slurry + 150 kg ha−1 chemical fertilizer) were applied for five years. The results indicated that compared to the control group, the long-term application of biogas slurry significantly increased the SOC, TN, AP, and AK values by 45.93%, 39.52%, 174.73%, and 161.54%, respectively; it neutralized acidic soil and increased the soil pH. TN, SOC, pH, and AP are all important environmental factors that influence the structural composition of the soil’s bacterial and fungal communities. Chemical fertilizer application significantly increased the diversity of the bacterial community. Variation was observed in the composition of soil bacterial and fungal communities among the different treatments. The structure and diversity of soil microbes are affected by different methods of fertilization; the application of biogas slurry not only increases the contents of soil nutrients but also regulates the soil’s bacterial and fungal community structures. Therefore, biogas slurry can serve as a sustainable management measure and offers an alternative to the application of chemical fertilizers for sustainable intensification.

ObjectivesThis study seeks to improve the thermal management technology of electronic devices through constructal optimization design. MethodsFirst, the 3D flow and heat transfer numerical model of a hybrid microchannel heat sink is established, and the volume ratio and relative position of its single-sided internal fins are fixed. Constructal optimization is then performed, for which the height-to-width ratio h/w and spacing distribution of fins ε are taken as the design variables, and the minimization of the temperature gradient uniformity factor in the solid region of the heat sink is taken as the objective. The exhaustive method and genetic algorithm are subsequently performed. ResultsThe results show that both the exhaustive method and genetic algorithm can find the minimum value of the temperature gradient uniformity factor and corresponding optimal construct, and the temperature gradient uniformity is improved by up to 13.30% compared to that of the finless microchannel heat sink. The relative difference in the obtained minimum objective function value between the exhaustive method and ten genetic algorithm schemes is no more than 0.92%. ConclusionsThis study provides new optimization design results for the research and development of heat sinks for electronic devices.

Abstract Disinfection eliminates pathogenic microorganisms and ensures a biosafe environment for human beings. The rapid spread of COVID-19 is challenging traditional disinfection methods in terms of reducing harmful side effects and conducting faster processes. Spraying large-scale chemical disinfectants is harmful to individuals and the environment, while UV lamp and light-emitting diode (LED) disinfection still requires a long exposure time due to the low irradiance and highly divergent beam characteristics. Given that a laser maintains a high irradiance over a long distance, we studied the effectiveness of lasers as a new disinfection method, and the results show the capability for ultrafast inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 virus with a 266 nm laser. This work confirms UV lasers as a good candidate for disinfection.

Although tempering is an effective method to improve the mechanical properties of steel, its influence on corrosion behavior has been controversial. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess the effects of different tempering temperatures on the corrosion resistance of low alloy steel in wet atmosphere using an immersion test, salt spray test, electrochemical measurement, and morphology characterization and phase analysis. The results showed that defects and the highly reactive nature of high angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) of bare steels are preferentially corroded. In the initial stage of corrosion, the tempering temperature affects the distribution of low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs). The specimens tempered at low tempering temperatures corroded lightly because of low interface energy. In the later stage of corrosion, the corrosion resistance of the specimens still depends on the matrix due to the limited protection of the rust layer. Thus, the charge transfer resistance improves and the corrosion resistance becomes better with the decrease of tempering temperature.

Lead-free piezoelectric sodium bismuth titanate (([Formula: see text][Formula: see text])TiO3, BNT) thin films were epitaxially grown onto (001)-, (110)-, and (111)-oriented Nb:SrTiO3 (STO) single crystal substrates prepared by sol–gel processing. Highly oriented growth in (001), (110), and (111) BNT thin films was obtained in this work benefiting from the lattice match between the BNT film and the STO substrate. The different growth models in thin films with various orientations result in various surface morphologies dependent on the film orientation. The piezoresponse of the BNT thin films was represented exhibiting a strong orientation dependence that (110)>(001)>(111). This is contributed by the various domain switching contribution related to the crystal symmetry and polarization distribution in the three oriented thin films.

Mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) is a frequently-used tool for phylogenetic and evolutionary studies among metazoans, however, it was still poorly represented in some invertebrate groups, including holothurians. Apodida is one of the most ancient orders of Holothuroidea, with unique characteristics in lacking tube feet and the respiratory tree. Here, we sequenced six mitogenomes from the holothurian order Apodida (Synaptidae and Chiridotidae) and compared them with other available holothurian mitogenomes. The apodan mitogenomes present positive GC skews and negative AT skews, a pattern diametrically opposite to that found in the mitogenomes of other holothurians. The amino acid genetic distances of the 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs) were the highest between Apodida and other holothurians. The mitochondrial gene orders within Apodida were extensively rearranged at the species level, and also were unique from the arrangement patterns of other holothurians. Phylogenetic relationships based on two different criteria: (i) nucleotides sequences with all codon positions (PCG123) and (ii) Neutral Transitions Excluded model (NTE) confirmed the monophyly and basal position of the order Apodida with a long branch. The NTE phylogeny generated a low variation of branch length, but it did not ameliorate the long branch length of Apodida. The divergence time estimation suggested that the Apodida originated in the Middle Carboniferous, implying that they survived the extinction event that occurred in the boundary of the Permian and Triassic. The NTE dataset revealed younger age than that generated by PCG123 dataset. Apodida is accompanied by a faster evolutionary rate than other holothurians (0.0069 vs 0.0043 subs/s/my). The absence of tube feet and the respiratory tree may play an important role in the dramatic evolutionary changes of apodan mitogenomes.
