Purpose: To assess the accuracy of the intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation based on three methods using artificial intelligence (AI) and one formula using no AI. Methods: During cataract surgery on 114 eyes, one type of IOL was implanted, calculated with the Hill-RBF 2.0 method. The theoretical postoperative refractions were calculated using the Kane and the Pearl-DGS methods and a vergence based formula (Barrett Universal II, BUII). The differences between the manifest and objective postoperative refractions and the predicted refractions were calculated. The percentage of eyes within ±0.5 D and ±1.0 D prediction error (PE), the mean, and the median absolute errors (MAE and MedAE) were also determined. Results: The mean age of the patients was 69.48 years; the axial length was between 21.19 and 25.39 mm. The number of eyes within ±0.5/±1.0 D PE was 96/108 (84.21%/94.73%) using the Hill-RBF 2.0 method, 92/107 (80.70%/93.85%) with the Kane method, 91/107 (79.82%/93.85%) with the Pearl-DGS method, and 91/106 (79.82%/92.98%) with the BUII formula, using subjective refraction. With objective refractometric data, PEs were within ±0.5 D in 88 (77.19%), 83 (72.80%), 82 (71.92%), and 80 (70.17%) cases (Hill-RBF, Kane, Pearl-DGS, BUII, respectively). MAE and MedAE were also best with the Hill-RBF 2.0 method (0.3 D; 0.18 D). Conclusion: Better accuracy of PE might be obtained by the Hill-RBF 2.0 method compared with BUII. The Kane and Pearl-DGS methods showed similar accuracy when compared with BUII.

The scale-up of a chiral bicyclic homopiperazine of pharmaceutical interest was investigated. The outcome and safety profile of a key batch ring-expansion step via Schmidt rearrangement was improved using continuous-flow chemistry. The selectivity of nitrogen insertion for the ring expansion was improved via an alternative photochemical oxaziridine rearrangement under mild conditions, which when converted to continuous-flow in a simple and efficient flow reactor allowed the first photochemical scale-up of a homopiperazine.

Purpose: The aim was to assess the postoperative results of a biometric method using artificial intelligence (Hill–radial basis function 2.0), and data from a modern formula (Barrett Universal II) and the Sanders–Retzlaff–Kraft/Theoretical formula. Methods: Phacoemulsification and biconvex intraocular lens implantation were performed in 186 cataractous eyes. The diopters of intraocular lens were established with the Hill–radial basis function method, based on biometric data obtained using the Aladdin device. The required diopters of the intraocular lens were also calculated by the Barrett Universal II formula and with the Sanders–Retzlaff–Kraft/Theoretical formula. The differences between the manifest postoperative refractive errors and the planned refractive errors were calculated, as well as the percentage of eyes within ±0.5 D of the prediction error. The mean- and the median absolute refractive errors were also determined. Results: The mean age of the patients was 70.13 years (SD = 10.67 years), and the mean axial length was 23.47 mm (range = 20.72–28.78 mm). The percentage of eyes within a prediction error of ±0.5 D was 83.62% using the Hill–radial basis function method, 79.66% with the Barrett Universal II formula, and 74.01% in the case of the Sanders–Retzlaff–Kraft/Theoretical formula. The mean- and the median absolute refractive errors were not statistically different. Conclusion: Clinical success was the highest when using the biometric method, based on pattern recognition. The results obtained using Barrett Universal II came a close second. Both methods performed better compared to a traditionally used formula.

Concepts such as Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet of Things aim for a digital transformation of manufacturing companies. One aspect that is to be transformed is the shop floor, where the interconnection of machines and sensor devices plays a major role. 5G positions itself to be a key technology to enable this transformation by providing reliable, low latency, and high bandwidth communication which is required by industrial use cases. However, so far it is still unclear which role 5G will play in industrial networks and how it can be integrated into existing factory ecosystems. Therefore, this paper presents three different data flow architectures that illustrate how 5G can be integrated into the production IT and how it can coexist with a factory cloud system. Furthermore, we describe a use case that reflects typical industrial communication requirements and will be used in the future to evaluate the different architectures. We conclude by presenting a validation plan and an outlook on future work.

Purpose: To evaluate corneal parameters in patients with polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM) and compare them with those of healthy controls.Methods: A total of 43 PM and 32 DM patients and 93 controls were enrolled in this cross-sectional, observational, case-control study. Corneal parameters were evaluated by Pentacam. Objective clinical tests of dry eye disease (DED) were also performed.Results: All pachymetric measurements and corneal volumes (CVs) proved to be significantly lower both in PM and DM patients. The values of DM patients were closer to control values than those of the PM patients. For tear break-up time and Schirmer-I test values significant differences were observed between patients and controls, with values decreased both in PM and DM patients.Conclusions: PM patients rather than DM patients tend to develop thinner and low-volume corneas as compared to controls. Additionally, a high prevalence of DED among both PM and DM patients was also detected.

Background and purpose TRPM4 is a calcium-activated non-selective cation channel expressed in many tissues and implicated in several diseases, and has not yet been validated as a therapeutic target due to the lack of potent and selective inhibitors. We sought to discover a novel series of small-molecule inhibitors by combining in silico methods and cell-based screening assay, with sub-micromolar potency and improved selectivity from previously reported TRPM4 inhibitors. Experimental approach Here, we developed a high throughput screening compatible assay to record TRPM4-mediated Na+ influx in cells using a Na+ -sensitive dye and used this assay to screen a small set of compounds selected by ligand-based virtual screening using previously known weakly active and non-selective TRPM4 inhibitors as seed molecules. Conventional electrophysiological methods were used to validate the potency and selectivity of the hit compounds in HEK293 cells overexpressing TRPM4 and in endogenously expressing prostate cancer cell line LNCaP. Chemical chaperone property of compound 5 was studied using Western blots and electrophysiology experiments. Key results A series of halogenated anthranilic amides were identified with TRPM4 inhibitory properties with sub-micromolar potency and adequate selectivity. We also showed for the first time that a naturally occurring variant of TRPM4, which displays loss-of-expression and function, is rescued by the most promising compound 5 identified in this study. Conclusions and implications The discovery of compound 5, a potent and selective inhibitor of TRPM4 with an additional chemical chaperone feature, revealed new opportunities for studying the role of TRPM4 in human diseases and developing clinical drug candidates.

Our aim was to compare densitometry data between keratoconus and normal corneas and to assess the long-term changes in corneal backscattered light values after corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) treatment.Retrospective analysis was performed on 26 eyes of normal patients (age: 32.71 ± 12.68 years) and 39 eyes of keratoconus patients (28.93 ± 7.59 years) using the Pentacam HR corneal densitometry module before CXL and during the postoperative period, which lasted a mean of 2.53 years (range: 1-4 years). Corneal backscattered light values in grey scale unit (GSU) were recorded for the anterior 120 µm, the center layer, and the posterior 60 µm of the cornea in four concentric, central rings. An additional calculation was performed with converting GSU values to GSU/cubic millimeters (mmStatistically significant differences were observed between normal and keratoconus group densitometry values (in GSU/mmDensitometry measurements can reflect the changes of optical quality of the cornea. These measurements may play a valuable role in assessing keratoconus and optical changes of the corneas after CXL treatment.

Regenerative medicine using human or porcine β‐cells or islets has an excellent potential to become a clinically relevant method for the treatment of type‐1 diabetes. High‐resolution imaging of the function and faith of transplanted porcine pancreatic islets and human stem cell–derived beta cells in large animals and patients for testing advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) is a currently unmet need for pre‐clinical/clinical trials. The iNanoBIT EU H2020 project is developing novel highly sensitive nanotechnology‐based imaging approaches allowing for monitoring of survival, engraftment, proliferation, function and whole‐body distribution of the cellular transplants in a porcine diabetes model with excellent translational potential to humans. We develop and validate the application of single‐photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and optoacoustic imaging technologies in a transgenic insulin‐deficient pig model to observe transplanted porcine xeno‐islets and in vitro differentiated human beta cells. We are progressing in generating new transgenic reporter pigs and human‐induced pluripotent cell (iPSC) lines for optoacoustic imaging and testing them in transplantable bioartificial islet devices. Novel multifunctional nanoparticles have been generated and are being tested for nuclear imaging of islets and beta cells using a new, high‐resolution SPECT imaging device. Overall, the combined multidisciplinary expertise of the project partners allows progress towards creating much needed technological toolboxes for the xenotransplantation and ATMP field, and thus reinforces the European healthcare supply chain for regenerative medicinal products.

Aging is a major risk factor for vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID). Recent studies demonstrate that cerebromicrovascular dysfunction plays a causal role in the development of age-related cognitive impairment, in part via disruption of neurovascular coupling (NVC) responses. NVC (functional hyperemia) is responsible for adjusting cerebral blood flow to the increased energetic demands of activated neurons, and in preclinical animal models of aging, pharmacological restoration of NVC is associated with improved cognitive performance. To translate these findings, there is an increasing need to develop novel and sensitive tools to assess cerebromicrovascular function and NVC to assess risk for VCID and evaluate treatment efficacy. Due to shared developmental origins, anatomical features, and physiology, assessment of retinal vessel function may serve as an important surrogate outcome measure to study neurovascular dysfunction. The present study was designed to compare NVC responses in young ( 65 years of age; n = 11) healthy human subjects by assessing flicker light-induced changes in the diameter of retinal arterioles using a dynamic vessel analyzer (DVA)-based approach. We found that NVC responses in retinal arterioles were significantly decreased in older adults as compared with younger subjects. We propose that the DVA-based approach can be used to assess NVC, as a surrogate cerebromicrovascular outcome measure, to evaluate the effects of therapeutic interventions in older individuals.

PurposeTo analyze the effect of the accommodation on the anterior segment data (corneal and anterior chamber parameters) induced by short-time reading in a healthy, nonpresbyopic adult patient group.MethodsImages of both eyes of nonpresbyopic volunteers were captured with a Scheimpflug device (Pentacam HR) in a nonaccommodative state. Fifteen minutes of reading followed and through fixation of the built-in target of Pentacam HR further accommodation was achieved and new images were captured by the device. Anterior segment parameters were observed and the differences were analyzed.ResultsFifty-two healthy eyes of 26 subjects (range 20.04-28.58 years) were analyzed. No significant differences were observed in the keratometric values before and after the accommodative task (p = 0.35). A statistically significant difference was measured in the 5.0-mm-diameter and the 7.0-mm-diameter corneal volume (p = 0.01 and p = 0.03) between accommodation states. Corneal aberrometric data did not change significantly during short-term accommodation. Significant differences were observed between nonaccommodative and accommodative states of the eyes for all measured anterior chamber parameters.ConclusionsAmong the parameters of the cornea, only corneal volume changed during the short-term accommodation process, showing some fine changes with accommodation of the cornea in young, emmetropic patients. The position of the pupil and the anterior chamber parameters were observed to change with accommodation as captured by a Scheimpflug device.

To assess the repeatability of a swept-source biometer in phakic and pseudophakic patients, including astigmatism analysis, and to compare measurement data with those obtained by an optical low-coherence interferometry method.Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Central Hospital and University Teaching Hospital, Miskolc, Hungary.Evaluation of diagnostic technologies.One eye of each patient was examined with the Argos and Aladdin devices. With the Argos, three repeated measurements were performed. Biometric parameters and cross-cylinder power vector components of astigmatism were assessed. Descriptive and repeatability data of the Argos were observed, and Bland-Altman plots were created.The study comprised 96 eyes (50 phakic and 46 pseudophakic) of 96 patients (mean age 69.22 years and 71.14 years, respectively). The two devices showed a significant difference regarding astigmatism and corneal diameter in the phakic group (measured larger by Argos, P .05). In the pseudophakic group, only the corneal diameter data were significantly different (measured larger by Argos, P = .02). No other statistically significant differences were observed in either group. An excellent intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was reported on the Argos device in the case of all measured parameters except for the diopter values of astigmatism and the vector values of the astigmatism in the phakic group. In the pseudophakic group, the ICC was moderate in the case of anterior chamber depth (ACD) and good in the case of astigmatism and vectorial data.The repeatability data regarding the Argos biometer were excellent for all parameters except astigmatism data in both groups and ACD readings in the pseudophakic group. However, only a limited agreement was observed between these devices in both groups.

PURPOSE: To analyze the repeatability of keratometric and white-to-white (WTW) distance measurements with the VERION Measurement Module (Alcon Laboratories, Inc., Fort Worth, TX) and to compare the measured data to the results of the IOLMaster (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany). METHODS: Three images were captured with the VERION and the flattest and steepest keratometric data, the astigmatism axis, and the WTW distance were recorded. Subsequently, the axial length, the keratometric data with axis, and the WTW distance were measured with an IOLMaster. The repeatability data of the keratometric value of the VERION System, converted to cross cylinder J 0 and J 45 vector components, were analyzed. The agreement data for keratometry obtained by the VERION System and the differences regarding keratometric data and WTW distance compared to IOLMaster were calculated. RESULTS: The measurements were conducted in 50 eyes of 50 healthy volunteers (median age: 50.32 years, range: 19.34 to 85.3 years). The flattest and the steepest keratometric data, the diopter of astigmatism, the J 0 and J 45 vector components, and WTW distance did not differ significantly between devices ( P > .05). Intraclass correlation coefficients (range: 0.863 to 0.994) and Cronbach’s alpha values (range: 0.950 to 0.998) were high for all parameters measured by the VERION System. CONCLUSIONS: The VERION System has high repeatability and agreement with the IOLMaster, making it suitable as an alternative tool in clinical practice. [ J Refract Surg. 2015;31(5):333–337.]

AIM: To evaluate the anterior and posterior corneal surfaces using scanning-slit topography and to determine the diagnostic ability of the measured corneal parameters in keratoconus. METHODS: Orbscan II measurements were taken in 39 keratoconic corneas previously diagnosed by corneal topography and in 39 healthy eyes. The central minimum, maximum, and astigmatic simulated keratometry (K) and anterior axial power values were determined. Spherical and cylindrical mean power diopters were obtained at the central and at the steepest point of the cornea both on anterior and on posterior mean power maps. Pachymetry evaluations were taken at the center and paracentrally in the 3 mm zone from the center at a location of every 45 degrees. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to determine the best cut-off values and to evaluate the utility of the measured parameters in identifying patients with keratoconus. RESULTS: The minimum, maximum and astigmatic simulated K readings were 44.80±3.06 D, 47.17±3.67 D and 2.42±1.84 D respectively in keratoconus patients and these values differed significantly (P

PURPOSE Our aim was to assess the corneal power, axis, and age dependence of the anterior and posterior corneal surfaces with Scheimpflug imaging. METHODS Patients older than 10 years without a history of ocular surgery, corneal diseases, contact lens wearing, or severe dry eye were enrolled. Data regarding the anterior and posterior cornea were analyzed by means of Scheimpflug imaging (Pentacam HR). RESULTS The median age was 46.8 years (range: 10.0-90.3), and involved 827 eyes of 827 patients. Posterior corneal astigmatism was a median of -0.30 diopters (D) and exceeded 0.50 D in 12.56%. The ratio of the anterior-to-posterior corneal radius was a median of 1.217 (range: 1.021-1.402). The correlation between this ratio and age was significant (r = -0.219; P < 0.001). The correlation between anterior and posterior corneal astigmatism and age was significant. At the anterior surface, the ratio of with-the-rule astigmatism was 80.0% for the age range 10 to 20, decreasing to 36.0% for those aged over 81 years, whereas the ratio of against-the-rule astigmatism increased from 7.1% to 44.0%. At the posterior surface, the ratio of with-the-rule astigmatism was 94.3% for the age range 10 to 20 years, decreasing to 84.0% for those aged over 81 years, whereas the ratio of against-the-rule astigmatism increased from 1.4% to 8.0%. CONCLUSIONS The posterior cornea significantly influences corneal astigmatism. Its power value and orientation are much more stable with advancing age compared with anterior surface values.

Purpose To analyze the early results of a new device measuring ocular biomechanics after corneal refractive surgery. Patients and methods Thirty nine refractive surgery patients were enrolled in the study (age: 32.6 ± 9.9 years). Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) was performed on 52 eyes of 26 patients and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) was done on 26 eyes of 13 patients. Ten device-specific biomechanical parameters, intraocular pressure (IOP) and pachymetry were measured preoperatively and at day 1, week 1 and month 1 after the surgeries with a new technology based on Scheimpflug imaging (CorVis ST, Oculus). Results In case of LASIK, the day after the procedure, radius values showed significant differences compared to preoperative data. One month after surgery, radius values, velocity of the second applanation and pachymetry showed significant differences compared to preoperative data. In case of PRK, the day after the procedure, significant differences in IOP, maximum amplitude at the apex, A1 time, A2 velocity and highest concavity time were measured. After 1 month of PRK, there were no differences in the parameters compared to preoperative data except pachymetry. Conclusions We observed that some specific biomechanical parameters changed measured with CorVis ST after LASIK and PRK, in the early postoperative time. However, most of these parameters remain unchanged after one month of LASIK and PRK compared to preoperative data.

PURPOSE To assess intraoperative and postoperative changes in corneal thickness subsequent to riboflavin-UVA (collagen crosslinking [CXL]) treatment. METHODS Forty-one eyes of 41 patients (mean age 27.97 ± 6.97 years) were treated with CXL technique. During treatment, isotonic riboflavin was instilled and corneal thickness measurements were obtained at the cornea apex, the thinnest point, and the pupil center at 15 and 30 minutes, then 3 days, 1 week, and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery using Pentacam HR and an ultrasound pachymeter. To analyze the magnitude, orientation, and age-related changes of corneal astigmatism and its correlation with biometric parameters in healthy eyes. Patients over 15 years of age were enrolled in our study. Exclusion criteria were previous ocular surgery, corneal disease, or contact lens wear. Axial length (AL), keratometric readings, and anterior chamber depth (ACD) were assessed using IOLMaster. In our study, 1092 eyes were examined. The mean age was 69.64 ± 15.25 years (range 15-100 years). The AL was 23.32 ± 1.49 mm and ACD was 3.17 ± 2.03 mm. Higher AL and ACD values were observed in male patients. The overall astigmatism was 0.89 ± 0.72 D. The magnitude of astigmatism was =0.5 D in 73.53% of the cases, =1.0 D in 32.78%, =1.5 D in 13.55%, and =2.0 D in 6.86%. In our population, 582 eyes (53.3%) showed with-the-rule astigmatism, 309 (28.3%) against-the-rule, and 201 (18.4%) oblique astigmatism, regardless of sex. Significant against-the-rule astigmatic shift was verified with aging. Significant correlation was found between age and ACD (r =0.39, p0.001), age and AL (r =0.15, p0.001), and AL and flat (r =0.54, p0.001) and steep keratometric readings (r =0.49, p0.001). In order to obtain adequate refraction results, at the time of cataract surgery distinct attention should be drawn to ophthalmologic biometric parameters, which are continuously changing even in adulthood, and to astigmatism above 1.0 D, present in32% of the population.

PURPOSE: To analyze the repeatability of a new device measuring ocular biomechanical properties, central corneal thickness (CCT), and intraocular pressure (IOP) and to investigate these parameters and their correlations in healthy eyes. METHODS: Three consecutive measurements were performed on each eye using the CorVis ST device (Oculus Optikgeräte, Inc., Wetzler, Germany). Ten specific parameters, CCT, and IOP were measured. Biometric data were recorded with IOLMaster (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany). RESULTS: This study comprised 75 eyes of 75 healthy volunteers (mean age: 61.24 ± 15.72 years). Mean IOP was 15.02 ± 2.90 mm Hg and mean CCT was 556.33 ± 33.13 μ m. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was 0.865 for IOP and 0.970 for CCT, and coefficient of variation was 0.069 for IOP and 0.008 for CCT. ICC was 0.758 for maximum amplitude at highest concavity and 0.784 for first applanation time, and less than 0.6 for all other parameters. The device-specific data showed no significant relationship with age and axial length. Flattest and steepest keratometric values and IOP showed a significant correlation with the 10 device-specific parameters. CONCLUSIONS: The CorVis ST showed high repeatability for only IOP and pachymetric values. Single measurements are not reliable for the 10 device-specific parameters. The device allows for conducting clinical examinations and screening for surgeries altering ocular biomechanical properties with some form of averaging of multiple measurements. To study the reliability and repeatability of anterior segment measurements in patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty with swept light source Fourier domain anterior segment optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) in comparison with a high-resolution Scheimpflug camera.Keratometry (K) and elevation data of the anterior and posterior corneal surfaces, central corneal thickness, and anterior chamber depth were determined in 56 postkeratoplasty eyes (mean age: 59.6 ± 16.5 yrs) with SS-OCT (CASIA SS-1000; Tomey) followed by Scheimpflug photography (Pentacam High Resolution; Oculus). Examinations were also performed on 48 right eyes of 48 age-matched healthy subjects (mean age: 66.3 ± 7.0 yrs).A statistically significant difference was detected between both tomographers in anterior flat K [1.7 ± 4.92 diopters (D)], posterior astigmatism (1.32 ± 5.7 D) and elevation (6.65 ± 14.07 μm), and central corneal thickness (27.39 ± 90.81 μm) and anterior chamber depth values (0.14 ± 0.66 mm) in patients who had undergone corneal transplantation (P0.05). In the postkeratoplasty group, repeatability of SS-OCT was higher for every anterior segment parameter in comparison with the Pentacam. In corneal grafts, the variability between 3 consecutive measurements on the same subject was remarkably lower for every parameter while using SS-OCT.In patients who had undergone corneal transplantation, SS-OCT provided more reliable and repeatable anterior segment evaluations when compared with the rotating Scheimpflug system. Our findings suggested that the tested high-resolution swept-source OCT system is a comprehensive and precise diagnostic tool for postoperative follow-up of patients who have undergone penetrating keratoplasty.

AIM To analyze the correlations between ocular biomechanical and biometric data of the eye, measured by Scheimpflug-based devices on healthy subjects. METHODS Three consecutive measurements were carried out using the corneal visualization Scheimpflug technology (CorVis ST) device on healthy eyes and the 10 device-specific parameters were recorded. Pentacam HR-derived parameters (corneal curvature radii on the anterior and posterior surfaces; apical pachymetry; corneal volume; corneal aberration data; depth, volume and angle of the anterior chamber) and axial length (AL) from IOLMaster were correlated with the 10 specific CorVis ST parameters. RESULTS Measurements were conducted in 43 eyes of 43 volunteers (age 61.24±15.72y). The 10 specific CorVis ST data showed significant relationships with corneal curvature radii both on the anterior and posterior surface, pachymetric data, root mean square (RMS) data of lower-order aberrations, and posterior RMS of higher-order aberrations and spherical aberration of the posterior cornea. Anterior chamber depth showed a significant relationship, but there were no significant correlations between corneal volume, anterior chamber volume, mean chamber angle or AL and the 10 specific CorVis ST parameters. CONCLUSIONS CorVis ST-generated parameters are influenced by corneal curvature radii, some corneal RMS data, but corneal volume, anterior chamber volume, chamber angle and AL have no correlation with the biomechanical parameters. The parameters measured by CorVis ST seem to refer mostly to corneal properties of the eye.

Purpose. Ophthalmic parameters can be measured with different techniques and devices. Our aim was to measure anterior segment parameters using 2 optical devices and to compare the data to ultrasonic technique. Methods. Axial length (AL) was measured with IOLMaster; anterior chamber depth (ACD) was determined using IOLMaster, Visante® optical coherence tomography (OCT), and Pentacam® HR; and central corneal thickness (CCT) were measured with Pentacam® HR and with ultrasound. Results. In 45 eyes of 45 patients (age 62.73±15.31), the AL was 23.35±1.49 mm. The CCT was 541.7±39.9 μm with Visante OCT, 549.7±39.2 μm with Pentacam® HR, and 534.3±41.3 μm with ultrasonic device. The ACD was 3.0±0.42 mm with IOLMaster, 3.26±0.95 mm with Visante OCT, and 3.06±0.41 mm with Pentacam® HR. In case of CCT measurements, data obtained with Pentacam HR correlated with the results of ultrasonic measurements (r=0.89; pConclusions. Comparison of postoperative refraction results using ultrasound biometry with closed immersion shell and optical biometry. Three hundred and sixty-four eyes of 306 patients (age: 70.6 ± 12.8 years) underwent cataract surgery where intraocular lenses calculated by SRK/T formula were implanted. In 159 cases immersion ultrasonic biometry, in 205 eyes optical biometry was used. Differences between predicted and actual postoperative refractions were calculated both prior to and after optimization with the SRK/T formula, after which we analysed the similar data in the case of Holladay, Haigis, and Hoffer-Q formulas. Mean absolute error (MAE) and the percentage rate of patients within ±0.5 and ±1.0 D difference in the predicted error were calculated with these four formulas. MAE was 0.5–0.7 D in cases of both methods with SRK/T, Holladay, and Hoffer-Q formula, but higher with Haigis formula. With no optimization, 60–65 % of the patients were under 0.5 D error in the immersion group (except for Haigis formula). Using the optical method, this value was slightly higher (62-67 %), however, in this case, Haigis formula also did not perform so well (45 %). Refraction results significantly improved with Holladay, Hoffer-Q, and Haigis formulas in both groups. The rate of patients under 0.5 D error increased to 65 % by the immersion technique, and up to 80 % by the optical one. According to our results, optical biometry offers only slightly better outcomes compared to those of immersion shell with no optimized formulas. However, in case of new generation formulas with both methods, the optimization of IOL-constants give significantly better results.

To obtain the central corneal thickness (CCT) of healthy eyes using the rotating Scheimpflug imaging system and compare these results with conventional ultrasound pachymetry values. Interoperator reliability and repeatability of the different techniques were also determined.CCT was measured on the right eye of 46 healthy subjects with the Pentacam HR (Pentacam High Resolution; Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany) and contact ultrasound pachymetry (AL-2000; Tomey, Tennenlohe, Germany) by 2 independent investigators.Both observers obtained significantly higher CCT readings with the Pentacam HR imaging system (572 ± 33 and 575 ± 31 μm) than with the ultrasound device (546 ± 27 and 548 ± 28 μm) (P0.0001, paired Student t test). Strong and significant correlation was found between the 2 pachymetry techniques regardless of the investigator (r = 0.845 and 0.831, Spearman correlation coefficient) (P0.0001). For the Pentacam HR values, statistically significant difference was detected between the observers (P = 0.033). For both pachymetry methods, the degree of agreement between the investigators was reflected by the high interoperator intraclass correlation coefficient value (ICC = 0.96). No significant difference was disclosed between the 3 consecutive readings of either instrument (P0.05, analysis of variance).Significant difference in CCT values between the high-resolution Pentacam imaging system and the ultrasound pachymeter suggests that the 2 techniques cannot be used interchangeably in clinical practice.

Background and Objective: Anterior chamber depth (ACD) is an important anterior segment parameter. This study compared ACD measurements conducted with two optical devices in phakic, emmetropic eyes. Patients and Methods: Eighty-three phakic eyes of 44 patients with a mean axial length of 23.06 ± 0.94 mm were enrolled in the study. ACD was measured three times with the Scheimpflug-based Pentacam HR (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany), then three times with IOLMaster (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA), and data were statistically analyzed. Results: The measurements resulted in a mean ACD of 3.01 ± 0.34 mm with Pentacam HR and 2.95 ± 0.32 mm with IOLMaster. Distribution of data was normal, and no significant difference in ACD values was detected ( P = .29) between the two devices. Correlation between ACD measurements was highly significant ( r = 0.85; P < .0001). Conclusion: In phakic eyes, ACD measured with Pentacam HR and with IOLMaster showed similar values, and high correlation was observed between these two devices.
