Objective: Diabetes-related care makes up approximately 24% of outpatient clinic visits. Therefore, confidence and understanding of diabetes management is necessary for family medicine residents. Methods: We developed a combined lecture and simulation lab curriculum utilizing a registered nurse and pharmacist to deliver education to 20 family medicine learners. Pre and post surveys of the educational material were completed in 2 sections including one gauging medical knowledge and a second part gauging level of comfort. Results: Of the learners who participated, fourteen completed the pre-post surveys. Most (53%) respondents improved their scores, while 20% scored the same 27% scored worse. The overall average score increased 57% to 70% and improvement was statistically significant (P <.05). All learners improved confidence by at least 1 point. Conclusion: An interprofessional team utilizing a lecture curriculum focusing on providing education on effective prescribing, medication safety profiles, and resource availability, showed improvement in confidence but mixed knowledge benefit. Aim: To communicate how the Dutch postgraduate nursing education landscape was redesigned using entrustable professional activities (EPAs). The goal of this initiative was to reduce training time, enhance transfer across nursing specialities and contribute to a better‐aligned continuum of initial education, postgraduate education and continuing professional development. Background: Nursing shortages continue to worsen worldwide. An approach to address this growing shortage is to create a more flexible postgraduate training structure, offering training in the just‐in‐time and just‐as‐needed models. EPAs can be used as building blocks for training and assessment. Experience with EPAs (i.e. units of professional practice that can be entrusted once a trainee has demonstrated the required competencies) in health professions education, including nursing, is rising rapidly. While EPAs are largely used to create training flexibility within a programme, they can also be used to create flexibility across programmes. In 2018–2022, training hospitals and education institutions in the Netherlands collaborated in the CZO Flex Level Project to redesign the postgraduate nursing education landscape using EPAs. Discussion: The implementation of a flexible postgraduate nursing education model nationwide will face several challenges. An overview of these challenges and suggestions for future research on the effects of the new structure on nursing competence, satisfaction and career development are provided. The surge in healthcare demands due to the explosion of growth in the aging adult population demands that academic institutions address enhanced education of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). This is particularly challenging amidst nurse faculty shortages in specialty areas, stemming from factors such as lack of pay competitiveness with clinical positions, and doctoral-prepared nurses seeking faculty positions. Despite efforts to address the shortages, recruitment challenges persist, necessitating innovative approaches. This article explores the interprofessional collaborative teaching between Nurse Anesthesia (NA) and Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (NP) programs, focusing on airway management, sedation techniques, chest X-ray interpretation, and ultrasound skills. To date, this collaboration between NA and NP faculty has proven effective. Both synchronous and online asynchronous teaching have received overwhelmingly positive student feedback. Ongoing communication and collaborations between NA and NP faculty facilitate teaching and educational strategies across programs, sharing faculty expertise, and mitigating reduced faculty numbers. Nurses who earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree are expected to make essential contributions to the scholarship of practice and the improvement of health care outcomes. The DNP program at Duke University School of Nursing requires that students demonstrate scholarship competence by writing a manuscript based on their DNP project and submitting it for publication. The purpose of this article is to share an evaluation of the effectiveness of this approach. The authors used a bibliometric study design. This study demonstrates that manuscripts authored by students based on the DNP projects they conduct while earning their DNP degree can be published and are cited by other scholars. Additionally, the majority of these authors continue to publish scholarly work in the nursing and broader health-focused literature after they graduate. Background: The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the effects of curricular changes made to foster graduate students' understanding of how they can be catalysts of change. For more than a decade, the concept of the citizen nurse has been woven into coursework in nursing education, thus indicating an evaluation process was needed. Method: Ten oral history interviews were completed with current students or alumni. Data were analyzed for codes, allowing the final themes to emerge. Results: Two main themes emerged. Students reported (1) having a new understanding of what it means to be a nurse and (2) feeling more prepared to take action. Background: Educators ensure that nurse practitioner (NP) students meet core competencies prior to graduation. Post-graduation, students navigate certification, licensure, resume building, and job searches. A statewide virtual conference was developed to help students during the transition to advanced nursing practice. Method: Information was presented on professional role development, resume writing, interviewing, licensure, certification, contract negotiation, and transitioning to a provider role. Results: Nearly all participants (92%) were able to describe the status of NP practice and licensure requirements. Most attendees (90%) valued the insight shared by panelists. Many students (88%) felt more prepared to negotiate a contract. Conclusion: Current educational programs lack the time to thoroughly address NP graduates' learning needs regarding transition to practice. A partnership between faculties and a state professional organization is an innovative approach to meet students' educational desires. Background: Patient safety (PS) is a core competency for registered nurses. However, there is a gap between the PS competence of nursing students and their clinical experience in PS. This study explored the effect of PS competence levels on the occurrence of adverse events (AEs) among nursing master's students in China. Methods: A sequential mixed methods design was used, with a purposive sample across seven colleges. A total of 327 graduate nursing students, aged 22 to 38, participated in the survey, and 15 participated in qualitative interviews. The Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey (H-PEPSS) assessed the students' competence levels in PS. The respondents also reported any AEs that they had been involved in over the past year. Results: A total of 78 AEs occurred in the past year, with 17.7% of the participants involved 1 to 3 AEs. The most common AEs were medication administration errors (30.77%) and improper use of medical equipment/supplies (28.20%). Students acquired more competencies from the clinical setting than from the classroom setting. Three competencies learned from classroom settings were associated with clinical AEs: low clinical safety skills [OR = 0.61], inappropriate identify, response to and disclosing AE and close calls [OR = 0.454], and low confidence in working in teams with other health professionals [OR = 2.168]. Qualitative data analysis revealed five themes: recognizing AEs, reducing harm by addressing immediate risks to patients and others involved, promoting safe medication and clinical practice, managing members' authority and team dynamics, and dealing with inter-professional conflict. Background: Postgraduate fellowship training for nurse practitioners (NP) in palliative care can ameliorate workforce shortages; however, currently there are few NP fellowships and little evidence about outcomes, such as retention in hospice and palliative nursing, job satisfaction, or professional contributions. Objective: To describe the impact of palliative care fellowship training on the careers of NP alumni. Methods: A survey was electronically distributed to all NP alumni of an interprofessional palliative care fellowship since adult and pediatric nursing cohorts were added (2009–2022). Results: Most respondents still worked in hospice and/or palliative care; a majority of them engaged in professional activities beyond clinical work and reported high career satisfaction. Alumni endorsed multiple benefits of postgraduate fellowship except for post-fellowship compensation. Conclusions: NP palliative care fellowship alumni reported multiple career benefits including job satisfaction, professional accomplishment, and ongoing employment at their training institutions. With the rise in nurse practitioner (NP) residency programs, evaluations have largely focused on retention and competency completion for residents. There is a need for expanded evaluation to ensure the sustainability of NP residency programs, to ensure timely adaptations to address resident satisfaction, and to solidify a long-term pathway of NPs well prepared for rural practice. We created a family nurse practitioner (FNP) residency program with a comprehensive evaluation framework to prepare residents for practice in rural settings. The evaluation framework was developed through collaborative engagement of an external evaluation team, program leadership, and clinical site representatives. The evaluation framework of the FNP residency program combined resident assessment and holistic program evaluation, using a rapid continuous quality improvement (QI) approach. The evaluation considered three distinct perspectives: the resident, the peer coach, and the clinical site. The rapid continuous QI approach allowed program leadership to respond swiftly to programmatic challenges, improve the residency program in response to residents' reported experiences, and emphasize sustainability for continued program impact, while assessing residents' learning and performance. The program's data-driven evaluation approach has demonstrated its success in meeting the goals of the Health Resources and Services Administration funding by increasing the number of primary care providers in rural settings. The program's expansion and continued success have further validated the efficacy of this evaluation framework in assessing, improving, and ensuring the sustainability of APRN residency programs. Background: Academic support services can improve undergraduate and graduate nursing program outcomes such as program completion and passing the NCLEX. Academic success coaching complements traditional support strategies by providing study skills and time management tools, promoting goal setting and self-efficacy, and referring students to support resources. This review examined interventions that academic success coaches use to improve student success and retention, licensing examination pass rates, and academic success. Method: A scoping literature review identified types of interventions that resulted in significant improvement in student academic and holistic success. Results: Four classes of interventions were identified as effective in supporting student success: (1) academic support; (2) social and emotional support; (3) clinical guidance; and (4) course and program design. Conclusion: Academic coaches are educated to identify student needs, provide support, and refer students to resources to improve academic outcomes. This project aimed to evaluate the DNP projects at an academic medical center, assess the sustainability of DNP final projects, and explore potential opportunities to enhance the organizational review processes. AIM The purpose of this qualitative study was twofold: 1) explore factors contributing to the shortage of academic nurse educators (ANEs) and 2) identify opportunities to address these factors from the perspectives of nursing education institutions. BACKGROUND The nurse faculty shortage is a major national concern, with inadequate recruitment and retention. Addressing the nursing faculty shortage is important to maintain a sustained nursing workforce. METHOD Using a nominal group technique (NGT), a group of 45 diverse nurse educators from across the United States formed a virtual workgroup. RESULTS Findings led to an action plan formulated to guide educational institutions with ways to decrease the ANE shortage through recruitment and retention. CONCLUSION The evidence demonstrates the need for educational institutions to concentrate efforts on recruiting and retaining ANEs to combat the nursing shortage. With rapid advancements in sciences and the expanding scope of nursing practice, faculty are challenged to connect the experiences of learners with abstract concepts of science and to cultivate clinical reasoning skills. Rationale for the adoption of the illness-wellness continuum model includes the following: (a) the relationships among illness, health, and the nursing process are relevant in many health situations, and (b) levels of wellness are steeped in holistic principles of self-care, which are consistent with educational and clinical goals. Background: The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree prepares nurses for engagement in practice scholarship to improve health outcomes at multiple system levels. Organizational leaders' and employers' perceptions and expectations of DNP-prepared nurses require further study. Objective: To explore the perception of organizational leaders regarding expectations and engagement of DNP-prepared nurses in practice scholarship activities. Methods: Guided by the Actualized DNP Model, a cross-sectional design was used to survey organizational leaders (N = 87) regarding DNP-prepared nurses' engagement in practice scholarship. Results: Findings indicate that 92% (n = 80) of participants believed practice scholarship should be an expectation of DNP-prepared nurses serving in a variety of roles. Of the 77 respondents to the scholarship engagement questions, 97.4% (n = 75) reported that DNP-prepared nurses engaged in one or more practice scholarship activities over the past year. Conclusions: Aligning DNP practice scholarship competencies, as outlined in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing 2021 Essentials, with organizational needs, expectations, and provision of sufficient time to support these scholarship activities is needed. Implications for Nursing: Opportunities exist for DNP-prepared nurses to articulate and demonstrate their value by conducting practice scholarship through innovative advanced nursing roles to realize organizational goals. Background: National nurse shortages, ongoing nurse faculty retirements, and a dearth of clinical sites make it challenging to prepare advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who are ready to transition into independent provider roles, especially in acute care settings. One of the most effective ways to address these experiential learning challenges is for academic institutions and healthcare systems to form collaborative academic–practice partnerships. However, many partnerships between schools of nursing and healthcare institutions have found numerous challenges, including time to devote to the partnership, funding of ideas, competing initiatives and needs, and sustainability. Objective: The University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) set out to expand the traditional academic–clinical partnership approach with a new collaborative model. Methods: Rather than both parties coming to the table with their own goals, the partnership focused on intentional relationship building, transparency, measurable outcomes, and sustainability. This model, further called the Sustainable Academic–Clinical Alliance (SACA), assures that both sides of the partnership benefit. The SACA model was used to create an academic–practice partnership with the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health System in order to increase APRN clinical practice sites and readiness of APRN students to provide care across the continuum in the state of Maryland. Results: Since July 2016, the SACA model has enabled over 40 clinical providers in over 20 different clinical areas to offer 329 different clinical and nonclinical experiences to APRN students from UMSON. At the end of the 5-year alliance, 150 unique UMSON APRN students completed 257 different clinical rotations. Conclusion: The SACA model effectively promotes the development and achievement of sustainable academic–practice partnerships by focusing on (a) intentional relationship building, (b) transparency in goal setting and alliance maintenance, (c) development of outcome measures, and (d) sustainability. Implications for Nursing: The components of the SACA model made sustainability more achievable, which has eluded previous academic–clinical partnerships. Aim: This study adopted the qualitative research method, aiming to explore the learning experience of nursing graduate professional curricula in China from the perspective of students and provided a basis for the continuous improvement of nursing graduate training. Design: A qualitative study. Methods: A purposive sampling method was employed to conduct semi‐structured in‐depth interviews with 14 nursing master's students enrolled in professional curricula from September 03, 2021, to December 8, 2022. The Colaizzi seven‐step analysis method was utilized for data analysis, summarization and extraction. Results: Four themes emerged from the study findings: (i) The study of professional curricula is the cornerstone of scientific research work, but it is relatively boring; (ii) The teaching methods and assessment methods of postgraduate education need to be diversified; (iii) The postgraduate education needs to increase the study time of specialized courses and highlight the specialty characteristics; (iv) the study of professional curricula can enhance the comprehensive ability of postgraduate students. Conclusion: The study of professional curricula for post‐graduate nursing students plays an important role in the development of post‐graduate research and can statistically significant improve their comprehensive ability, but there are some problems such as boring courses, single teaching assessment methods and insufficient time. In the future teaching reform, it is necessary to highlight the specialty characteristics of nursing scientific research, optimize curriculum education and improve students' scientific research knowledge and thinking. Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a public health emergency, with a shortage of providers trained to prescribe buprenorphine for OUD treatment. We conducted a systematic review to examine advanced practice RN (APRN) and medical school programs that included OUD content or Drug Addiction Treatment Act waiver training and evaluate the outcomes of those curricular modifications. APRN and medical school programs that provided OUD content or waiver training saw improvements in students' knowledge and self-efficacy for managing buprenorphine treatment and reduced stigma toward individuals with OUD. Students' perceptions of training were largely positive, and the programs' results indicated improved practice outcomes related to the use of buprenorphine. Further inclusion of OUD content and training in APRN curricula will increase the number of capable buprenorphine prescribers, which will increase access to buprenorphine for individuals with OUD. Background: There is a growing number of online nursing graduate degree programs to address the professional development needs of working nurses. Work-related antecedents of online student engagement in graduate nursing studies are under-explored in the literature. Aim: The aim of the study is to examine the relationship among demographic and work characteristics, work-life balance (WLB), and online student engagement (OSE) among registered nurses enrolled in online graduate studies. Methods: This study design is convergent-parallel mixed methods, utilizing a survey approach to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. The target population is students of an online Master of Arts in Nursing program at a university in Cabanatuan City, Philippines. Respondents were recruited via email. Google Forms were used for data collection. Non-parametric, inferential statistical tests were used to examine relationships among variables. Inductive qualitative content analysis was used to draw insights from open-ended responses. Results: A total of 173 graduate students responded to the survey. Quantitative results indicate high levels of WLB (Mdn = 4.8, IQR = 1.5) and OSE (Mdn = 3.7–4.0, IQR = 0.5–1.0). WLB was significantly lower among females (U = 3297.5, p < 0.01). Emotion OSE was significantly higher for respondents with managerial positions (U = 2987.5, p < 0.05). WLB had significant low to moderate positive correlations with the domains of OSE (r = 0.22 to 0.32, p < 0.01). Qualitative findings reveal various appraisals of online learning and factors influencing work-life-study balance, such as work, personal life, and school. Conclusion: Work-life balance facilitates better online student engagement among graduate nursing students and is influenced by time management, work (i.e. job environment and stressors), personal (i.e. home life and leisure activities), and university factors (i.e. curriculum, modality, and professors). Impact statement: Empirical evidence on the link between WLB and OSE can inform graduate nursing academics in developing initiatives to ensure the timely completion of the degree program. Aim: To describe the expectations, acceptability, and challenges identified by nurses and key healthcare stakeholders regarding the implementation of advanced practice nursing in Gabon. Background: Advanced practice nursing presents an opportunity to address the epidemiological transition and the shortage of healthcare professionals in Africa. In anticipation of establishing a master's degree program in advanced practice nursing and its subsequent implementation, it is important to understand Gabon's specific needs and characteristics. Design: This study used a multicenter cross‐sectional mixed‐method design. Methods: From April to May 2022, a total of 187 healthcare professionals were included from two hospitals and two universities in Gabon. Data were collected through questionnaires and complemented by focus group discussions, guided by the existing literature, the PEPPA framework, and Hamric's model. Results: The implementation of advanced practice nursing was generally well accepted. Factors influencing acceptability included being female, awareness of advanced practice nursing, and supporting the role of advanced practice nurses in diagnosing chronic diseases. Barriers to implementation included the absence of a legal framework for the profession and a lack of recognition of nursing skills by both nurses and doctors. Facilitators included the establishment of a master's degree program, formalization of a legal framework, raising awareness, providing training to medical doctors and other healthcare professionals about advanced practice nursing, and the development of nursing leadership. Implications for nursing: Advanced practice nursing can play a crucial role in addressing healthcare resource shortages and the dual burden of chronic and infectious diseases in Gabon, as well as in other African countries. Aim: To explore factors associated with academic performance in the Master of Nursing programme. Background: Advanced practice nursing preparatory education generally involves completion of the Master of Nursing programme. While prior clinical experiences and on‐the‐job training are believed to underpin the preparation for such education, studies have suggested only weak or no associations between nurses' academic success in graduate schools and their clinical experiences. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in the nursing department of a university in Singapore. Academic and demographic data were extracted in February 2020 from a shared repository of anonymised teaching and learning data. R was used to select and merge data tables into a usable format for subsequent analysis. Students enrolled between 2010 and 2017 were included for the analysis (n = 246). Results: Age was statistically significantly associated with overall cumulative academic performance (p < 0.001). Younger students on average academically outperformed older students. Unmarried students were associated with better cumulative academic performance in the Clinical Practicum 2 module (p = 0.018). Conclusion: Younger students have historically outperformed their older counterparts in the Master of Nursing programme. There is a need to reassess the requirement of five years of clinical experience as an admission criterion for the Master of Nursing programme in Singapore. Implications for nursing policy: There is a need to re‐evaluate the admission criteria to better engage and retain younger nurses interested in advanced nursing practice. Postgraduate nursing education serves as a crucial connection between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice, playing an important role in enhancing the competencies of nurses in specialised fields, such as perioperative nursing. The delivery of higher education has undergone a transformation, focussing on online and blended learning, making higher education more accessible and more flexible to adult learners than traditional face-to-face education programs. However, acquiring hands-on surgical skills poses a potential challenge for online education. The expanding need for surgical service delivery from Perioperative Nurse Surgical Assistants (PNSAs) is increasing the demand for novice practitioners to acquire surgical skills. Simulation-based learning is an effective way to enhance skills in learners, and cost-effective solutions using innovative methodologies, that are explored in this discussion, pave the way for immersive learning experiences that enhance proficiency in surgical skills and ensure patient safety. Purpose: This study aimed to identify changes in the regional distribution of nurses from 2011 to 2020 and to measure the degree of geographic inequality in the distribution of nurses. Methods: National statistics from 2011 to 2020 were used to analyze the distribution of practicing nurses and nursing graduates by region. The degree of geographic inequality in these distributions was measured using the Gini coefficient. Results: Between 2011 and 2020, the number of nursing graduates increased significantly in the non-capital regions and medically underserved areas. However, non-capital regions observed a smaller increase in the number of practicing nurses than in the number of nursing graduates produced, while capital regions experienced a larger increase in the number of practicing nurses than in the number of nursing graduates produced. Furthermore, the degree of geographic inequality in the distribution of practicing nurses worsened between 2011 and 2020. Background: Learning in placement is essential to postgraduate critical care nursing students' education. Assessment of students' competence in placement is important to ensure highly qualified postgraduate critical care nurses. The placement model applied in Norway involves students being assessed by a preceptor in practice and a teacher from the university. The teacher has a more distant role in placement, and the aim of this study was to explore how the teachers experience the assessment of postgraduate critical care nursing students' competence in placement. Additionally, to explore the content of assessment documents used for postgraduate critical care nursing placement education in Norway. Methods: This study has a qualitative design with main data collection from individual interviews with 10 teachers from eight universities and colleges in Norway. Additionally, we performed a document analysis of assessment documents from all 10 universities and colleges providing postgraduate critical care nursing education in Norway. We followed the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research. Results: The teachers experienced the assessment of postgraduate critical care nursing students' competence in placement as important but complex, and some found it difficult to determine what critical care nursing competence is at advanced level. A thematic analysis resulted in one main theme: "Teacher facilitates the bridging between education and practice." Furthermore, three themes were identified: "Assessment based on trust and shared responsibility"; "The teacher's dual role as judge and supervisor"; and "A need for common, clear and relevant assessment criteria". Conclusions: Teachers have a key role in placement as they contribute to the bridging between education and practice by providing valuable pedagogical and academic input to the assessment process. We suggest that more teachers should be employed in joint university and clinical positions to enhance the collaboration between practice and education. Clear and relevant assessment criteria are essential for providing assessment support for both students and educators. Education and practice should collaborate on developing assessment criteria. Background: A first clinical placement for nursing students is a challenging period involving translation of theoretical knowledge and development of an identity within the healthcare setting; it is often a time of emotional vulnerability. It can be a pivotal moment for ambivalent nursing students to decide whether to continue their professional training. To date, student expectations prior to their first clinical placement have been explored in advance of the experience or gathered following the placement experience. However, there is a significant gap in understanding how nursing students' perspectives about their first clinical placement might change or remain consistent following their placement experiences. Thus, the study aimed to explore first-year nursing students' emotional responses towards and perceptions of their preparedness for their first clinical placement and to examine whether initial perceptions remain consistent or change during the placement experience. Methods: The research utilised a pre-post qualitative descriptive design. Six focus groups were undertaken before the first clinical placement (with up to four participants in each group) and follow-up individual interviews (n = 10) were undertaken towards the end of the first clinical placement with first-year entry-to-practice postgraduate nursing students. Data were analysed thematically. Results: Three main themes emerged: (1) adjusting and managing a raft of feelings, encapsulating participants' feelings about learning in a new environment and progressing from academia to clinical practice; (2) sinking or swimming, comprising students' expectations before their first clinical placement and how these perceptions are altered through their clinical placement experience; and (3) navigating placement, describing relationships between healthcare staff, patients, and peers. Conclusions: This unique study of first-year postgraduate entry-to-practice nursing students' perspectives of their first clinical placement adds to the extant knowledge. By examining student experience prior to and during their first clinical placement experience, it is possible to explore the consistency and change in students' narratives over the course of an impactful experience. Researching the narratives of nursing students embarking on their first clinical placement provides tertiary education institutions with insights into preparing students for this critical experience. Background: The health care systems in the Nordic countries and worldwide are under pressure due to increased longevity and a shortage of nurses. Providing nurses with a high level of education, such as advanced practice nursing, is of great importance to ensure effective, safe and high-quality care. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate self-reported competence using the Nurse Professional Competence Scale Short-Form for the first time among master's students of advanced practice nursing in the Nordic countries and to relate the findings to age, work obligations, child-rearing responsibilities, level of education and clinical nursing experience. Methods: A multicentre, cross-sectional design was used in this study conducted at five universities in Denmark, Finland and Norway. The Nurse Professional Competence Scale Short-Form consisting of six competence areas was used with a maximum score of 7 per item for the analysis of single items and a transformed scale from 14.3 to 100 for analysing the competence areas (higher score equals higher self-reported competence). Descriptive and comparative statistics were used to analyse the data. Results: The highest mean score was found for the competence area 'Value-based nursing care'. Students living with home-dwelling children (≤ 18 years) reported significantly higher competence in 'Nursing care', while students ≥33 years reported significantly higher competence in 'Nursing care' and 'Value-based nursing care'. No significant differences were found between students working and those not working alongside their studies, between students with and without further nursing-related education, or between students with long and short experience as nurses. Conclusions: The findings from this study might help to further develop curricula in advanced practice nursing master's programmes to ensure high-quality nursing and sustainable health care in the future. Future high-quality master's programmes might benefit from systematic collaboration between Nordic higher education institutions as also Sweden is planning master's programme. AIMThis study analyzed psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) students' reflections following a virtual simulated encounter with a patient who identified as transgender or gender expansive (TGE). BACKGROUND To reduce mental health disparities, PMHNP students must be prepared to deliver affirming care. Engaging in and reflecting on simulated encounters with standardized patients can improve PMHNP students' affirming care competency. METHOD A thematic analysis process was used to analyze student reflections during simulation debriefings. RESULTS Five themes emerged: application of affirming care principles, recognizing minority stressors, treating all patients the same, desire to learn more, and valuing authentic practice. CONCLUSION PMHNP students' reflections on the experience of providing care to a standardized patient who identified as TGE support the use of virtual simulations to prepare future providers to deliver affirming, person-centered care. In graduate nursing education, transitioning and expanding one's professional identity requires role evolution. Nurses transitioning into the advanced professional nursing role shifts their thinking to a new level. The Conceptual Model of Professional Identity in Nursing constitutes how values and ethics, knowledge, nurse as a leader, and professional comportment are intertwined. Competency-based education requires curricular redesign. The Essentials Tool Kit aligns The Essentials with learning activities to support competency-based curriculum and assessment. The Douglass and Stager Toolkit intertwines these resources for graduate nursing educators to inform professional identity in nursing for curriculum revisions. Background: Little is known about hybrid PhD nursing students' experiences. Method: The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the experiences of PhD nursing students in a hybrid program using a convergent mixed methods design. Recent nursing PhD alumni (n = 18), and current PhD students (n = 4) were recruited at a research-intensive university in the southwestern United States. Results: Four metainferences were identified: (1) the facilitator of faculty as both advisors and mentors; (2) the facilitator of peers as support, motivation, and a source of advice that preceded advisors; (3) the barrier of receiving conflicting feedback from advisory and dissertation committees; and (4) the barrier of not understanding the PhD student process. Conclusion: Peer support is fundamental for hybrid PhD nursing student success; conflicting feedback and not understanding the process are significant barriers. Background: Immersive technologies such as smart glasses can benefit nursing training and clinical practice. In this paper, we explore the views of nursing graduate students about their experience with smart glasses. Methods: Nursing graduate students (n = 13) were recruited using purposeful sampling. First, a virtual reality intervention for hyperglycemia in nursing care was shown. This was an attempt to introduce people to the technology and start discussions about how it might be used in nursing care. After that, participants underwent online interviews. Thematic analysis was used to examine the data. Results: The study findings indicated that the use of smart glasses as an enjoyable learning experience and immersive games positively affects nursing students. In addition, it was determined that they had negative experiences such as costs, lack of infrastructure, and smart glass side effects. Nurses have moral obligations incurred by membership in the profession to participate knowingly in health policy advocacy. Many barriers have historically hindered nurses from realizing their potential to advance health policy. The contemporary political context sets additional challenges to policy work due to polarization and conflict. Nursing education can help nurses recognize their role in advancing health through political advocacy in a manner that is consistent with disciplinary knowledge and ethical responsibilities. In this paper, the authors describe an exemplar of Elizabeth Barrett's "Power as Knowing Participation in Change" theory as a disciplinary lens within a doctoral nursing health policy course. Barrett (radically) emphasizes "power as freedom" instead of "power as control." This approach is congruent with nursing disciplinary values and enhances awareness of personal freedom and building collaborative relationships in the policy process. The theory was used in concert with other traditional policy content and frameworks from nursing and other disciplines. We discuss the role of nursing ethics viewed as professional responsibility for policy action, an overview of Barrett's theory, and the design of the course. Four student reflections on how the course influenced their thinking about policy advocacy are included. While not specific to policymaking, Barrett's theory provides a disciplinary grounding to increase students' awareness of freedom and choices in political advocacy participation. The prevalence of mental health disorders in primary care is high and challenges related to the COVID pandemic warrant further training of the family nurse practitioner. A telehealth simulation learning experience that included common primary care diagnoses in mental health—general anxiety, depression, and substance use disorder—was incorporated into a non-clinical behavioral health course. Formative evaluation provided by licensed nurse practitioners confirmed the need for improving interviewing techniques, engaging clients, and promoting safety among this population. Students' confidence during the encounter was measured using the Simulation Effectiveness Tool. Background: As the nursing organization environment evolves into one in which several generations work together, there are concerns about generational differences leading to conflicts. Purpose: A synthesis of qualitative studies was used to gain insight into the experiences and perceptions of new nurses working in South Korean hospitals and identify generational differences between nurses of Generations X and Y. Methods: Eight databases were searched systematically for qualitative studies published up to June 2020. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme Checklist for Qualitative Research was used to evaluate the quality of the retrieved studies, and the data were synthesized thematically using the Thomas and Harden method. Results: Of the 2,482 studies retrieved, 19 were included in this meta-synthesis. The experience of new nurses were presented in the three analytical themes of work experience, interpersonal relationships, and adaptation, from which eight descriptive themes were derived: (a) dissatisfied with own work performance, (b) negative feedback on work outcomes, (c) irregular daily life, (d) colleagues who help adapt to work life or make work life harder, (e) feelings of sympathy toward peers, (f) disrespectful patients or caregivers, (g) effective reactions, and (h) ineffective reactions. Although the new nurses from Generations X and Y reported similar experiences during their first year of nursing, differences were found in their values and tendencies regarding work and interpersonal relationships. Compared with new Generation X nurses, new Generation Y nurses placed more value on the meaning of individual work contributions, intimacy with colleagues, and appropriate feedback. Conclusions/Implications for Practice: The findings of this study support nursing administrators implementing strategies that both acknowledge and reduce the impact of generational category on nursing teams. Background: Nurses improve themselves with various trainings according to the developing era and patient needs. Determining the effects of postgraduate education in the clinical field opens new horizons for improving the quality of patient care. Aim: To determine the opinions of the participants about the effects of postgraduate education in nursing and the reflection of these effects on the clinic field and patient care by the nurse specialist. Methods: This is a phenomenological descriptive qualitative study which was data gathered through in-depth interviews with nurses, physicians, and patients. For content analysis, the data were subjected to thematic analysis. Results: The data obtained from the views of the participants about the effects of postgraduate education in nursing and its reflections on the clinic were combined under 4 main themes and 20 sub-codes. Conclusions: It was concluded that postgraduate education has effects on nursing roles, individual development, other professional development, increasing its professional value and scientific power, and these effects are reflected positively in clinical field. BackgroundOpioid misuse is a major public health concern in the United States. Opioid agonist medications are evidence-based treatments for opioid use disorders (OUD) that can be prescribed by advance practice registered nurses (APRNs) with prescriptive authority and appropriate training.PurposeArticle examines factors influencing preparation to provide medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in APRN education.MethodsData from semi-structured interviews addressing the role of education in preparing APRNs to provide MOUD were grouped into key themes using thematic analysis. Data were collected in a mixed methods study in four states with high opioid overdose deaths whose main findings were previously published.FindingsTwo overarching themes emerged: "addressing attitudes" and "curriculum change." Sub-themes include affective barriers to providing OUD treatment; motivation to respond to the OUD crisis; and attitude change through experience with MOUD.Discussion and conclusionAPRNs can play a key role in reducing the harms caused by OUD. Attention to attitudinal issues, such as stigma, toward people using opioids is important in educating APRNs about providing MOUD.

The rigors of graduate nursing education create significant stress for nurse anesthesia students. The taxing background of an intensive care nurse, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, compounds the inherent pressures of doctoral study. Students often experience symptoms of burnout, complicating their ability to learn and retain critical information. We created the Thrive initiative to encourage the development of emotional wellness. Thrive’s success is attributed to the blend of relevant information including emotional intelligence skills and racial sensitivity support, engaged student participation, and the desire to help the next generation of graduate nurses develop sustainable emotional health. Graduate students are faced with many stressors, including school, work, and home roles. They may not have the self-care skills and support to manage the increased stress from school. Self-care goal setting check-ins were implemented in a graduate course to support students’ stress management. Student resilience levels, wellness, and burnout were moderate. Students indicated the check-ins were helpful, yet still found challenges in completing self-care. They also stated less assignments and integrating more wellness into the curriculum would be helpful in supporting their self-care goals. As the field of nursing moves toward competency-based education, faculty need to adapt teaching and learning strategies to meet standards for assessing core behaviors of graduate psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner students. This article reviews a psychotherapy skills-based learning assignment at Frontier Nursing University that was adapted to meet developing competency-based learning standards. The assignment utilizes prerecorded video scenarios to provide students with opportunities to reinforce psychotherapy skills during didactic coursework. Doctor of nursing practice (DNP) projects with impactful health system outcomes can be a challenge for graduate students and graduate program faculty to develop. Rigorous DNP projects address patient and health system needs, meet programmatic requirements, and result in a portfolio of sustainable scholarship for DNP graduates. A strong academic-practice partnership may result in a greater likelihood of successful and impactful DNP projects. Our academic-practice partnership leaders developed a strategic approach to align health system priorities with DNP student project needs. AIM This study aimed to identify if a correlation exists among trait emotional intelligence (EI), leadership styles, and conflict management styles used by nurse education administrators. BACKGROUND Nursing is fraught with incivility, bullying, and increasing physical aggression. Conflict surrounds nurses at every level. EI and leadership styles in nursing have been addressed. Few studies were found that addressed conflict management by nurse education administrators. METHOD A quantitative nonexperimental correlational design using discriminant analysis was used in this study. RESULTS Trait EI factors of emotionality and sociability correlated with conflict management styles. Leadership styles and conflict management styles were situational; management styles of integrating and compromising were underused in conflict situations. CONCLUSION Nurse education administrators are in a position to become disruptive innovators in changing the nursing culture. Objective: Explore the impact of transition program policy directives grounded in foundational elements of transition theory. Background: Within fast-track health service environments nurse leaders remain committed to improving transition programs that support wellbeing and retain new graduate nurses. Duchscher's Stages of Transition Theory and Transition Shock model was the framework chosen by the health service nurse leaders to implement in the clinical environment, however, implementing elements can be problematic without sufficient support and clear policy directives. Study design and methods: Descriptive study using multiple methods in one major national health service that incorporates a number of private (eight) and public (four) hospitals across Australia. Online surveys were distributed to new graduate nurses at one, five and eleven months into the initial transition year. The survey tool was a synthesised adaptation of the Professional Role Transition Risk Assessment Instrument and Professional and Graduate Capability Framework. At the end of the transition year telephone interviews were conducted with the Nurse Managers who were responsible for implementing transition programs policies and processes. Resulting data were summarised using descriptive statistics for quantitative data and a thematic analysis for qualitative data. Results: 158 new graduate nurses returned the online survey and eight Nurse Managers participated in the telephone interviews. As a whole the new graduate registered nurses described feeling accepted during their transition and expressed feeling comfortable when approaching senior staff. They managed challenges of shift work and took time for self-care. The clear majority (88%) of participants reported no plans to leave the profession. Nurse Managers were able, in most clinical areas, to apply transition program policy and directives and enable the implementation of Duchscher's Stages of Transition as the framework for the transition support initiatives. Retention of new graduates on their wards at the end of the program was determined to be a positive outcome for Nurse Managers. Discussion: A carefully structured Graduate Nurse Transition Program founded on sound theoretically grounded ideology alongside integrated policy directives guided the Nurse Managers implementation of Duchscher's Stages of Transition Theory and Transition Shock model into practice. Additionally, a dedicated Graduate Nurse Coordinator role with a manageable ratio of graduate nurses was an important component included in the transition program at each participating hospital as it facilitated support of both graduates and Nurse Managers. These positions should be costed into any Graduate Nurse Transition Program. An interesting finding was the consistency in smaller units that were unable to provide or mobilise preceptors for the required allocated mirrored shifts and it was felt this workload management issue impacted the success of graduate transition nurse programs on those units. Conclusions: Implementing policy directives grounded in foundational elements of Duchscher's Stages of Transition theory and Transition Shock model delivered consistent experiences for new graduate nurses across one major health service that incorporates a number of hospitals across Australia. Data suggested some practical challenges to program implementation for Nurse Managers, including unit/ward size, staffing, and varying levels of understanding of preceptor roles. Implications for research, policy, practice: Introducing formal policy directives that are grounded in strong theoretical frameworks of professional role transition, agreed to and funded by health service nurse leaders are important in guiding a consistent approach across health services in the implementation of evidence-based Graduate Nurse Transition Programs. The setting for this project was a large academic institution. This study aimed to evaluate a multimodal approach to educating nurse practitioner students on culturally appropriate care. A three-phase intervention was used to explore the impact of the multimodal approach. Surveys were used to explore the impact of each modality on the student's knowledge and confidence in delivering culturally appropriate care. Background: Developing rigorous doctor of nursing practice (DNP) projects continues to challenge faculty and doctoral students. To address project rigor, expert content validity methods have been applied to clinical projects. Students implement expert content validity processes to literature-based project components. Objectives: The objectives of this study are to describe some of the developmental phases of DNP projects during the courses of one DNP program and to explore one strategy for increasing the rigor of DNP projects, review details on expert-type content validity methods, and examine literature for projects implementing an alternate application of expert-type content validity and scoring approaches to components of DNP projects. Methods: Expert content validity methods are described for DNP projects, such as guidelines, teaching plans, support groups, and algorithms. They are used to judge components generated from initial content analysis strategies. Types of expert panelists and descriptions of scoring ranks on project components are presented to represent different expert content validity strategies. Results The steps are presented to support expert content validity processes. Conclusions: DNP projects challenge faculty and students to create systematically constructed quality improvement projects on important and interesting clinical problems. The expert context validity process is one approach of enhancing project rigor. Implications for Nursing: An outline offers steps to establish expert content validity for translational DNP projects. Leadership acumen, interprofessional relationships, and knowledge of healthcare operations are essential proficiencies for nurses to navigate the dynamic and complex healthcare landscape. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) re-envisioned the academic nursing standards, The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education (Essentials), to guide curricular development in preparing nurses with the aptitude to meet these challenges. The purpose of this project was to develop an innovative Master of Science nursing program to address the challenges facing the RN workforce. A relationship-based framework and the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation (ADDIE) model were used to guide the development of the program using the Essentials to inform curricular design. A Nursing and Interprofessional Leadership Master of Science program was designed comprising seven core courses with two tracks, Bachelor of Nursing and Post Graduate Option. The program was created during the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have influenced the data used for the program's design. Healthcare complexities are requiring nursing education to evaluate curricula for advanced knowledge and skills.
