The fluvial system can be characterized from the application of geomorphological indicators. These allow understanding the dynamics of the system as well as carrying out a status diagnosis for good management. The aim of this work was to apply a group of geoindicators to diagnose and monitor the environmental status of the Oro basin (38° 4' 56.9"S 61°56' 24.17"W), Argentina. The geoindicators were grouped according to the application objective (diagnosis and monitoring) and the time scale (long, medium and short term). The field work was carried out during the period 2019 - 2021, which was the main input of information. The application of geoindicators in the medium and long term allowed the environmental characterization of the basin and recognition of the most important characteristics in terms of its fluvial dynamics, highlighting the variability of rainfall, which when it occurs in an extreme way, due to the morphometric characteristics of the basin, favors the occurrence of stream flooding events. In the short term, they allowed the identification of those indicators to be monitored to ensure optimal hydrogeomorphological quality, mainly in the riparian areas, which resulted in the highest degree of transformation. This study delved into the evolution of fungal population during the fermentation of Spanish-style green table olives (Manzanilla cultivar), determining the influence of different factors such as fermentation matrix (brine or fruit) or the use of a lactic acid bacteria inoculum, on its distribution. The samples (n = 24) were directly obtained from industrial fermentation vessels with approximately 10.000 kg of fruits and 6.000 L of brines. Our findings showcased a synchronized uptick in lactic acid bacteria counts alongside fungi proliferation. Metataxonomic analysis of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region unearthed noteworthy disparities across different fermentation time points (0, 24, and 83 days). Statistical analysis pinpointed two Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASV), Candida and Aureobasidium, as accountable for the observed variances among the different fermentation time samples. Notably, Candida exhibited a marked increase during 83 days of fermentation, opposite to Aureobasidium , which demonstrated a decline. Fungal biodiversity was slightly higher in brines than in fruits, whilst no effect of inoculation was noticed. At the onset of fermentation, prominently detected genera were also Mycosphaerella (19.82 %) and Apohysomyces (16.31 %), hitherto unreported in the context of table olive processing. However, their prevalence dwindled to nearly negligible levels from 24th day fermentation onwards (<2 %). On the contrary, they were replaced by the fermentative yeasts Saccharomyces and Isstachenkia. The main objective of this study was to analyze what writing measures, or combination of measures, would be most appropriate for early detection of students at risk of presenting future difficulties in learning to write in Spanish, in terms of tasks, scoring indices (dependent, independent and accurate-precision) and duration. A sample of 231 first graders was scored through IPAE (Indicadores de Progreso de Aprendizaje en Escritura [Indicators of Basic Early Writing Skills]), a curriculum-based assessment, in fall, winter, and spring. The students were classified as at-risk or not at risk based on a standard instrument (EGWA, Early Grade Writing Assessment) administered to them in spring. The predictive usefulness of the IPAE measures and their diagnostic accuracy were analyzed using the ROC Curve and binary logistic regression. The results suggest that dictated arbitrary spelling, dictated rule-based spelling, and dictated nonsense words could be an effective single measure to be used as a universal screening in the first stage of a two-stage gated screening procedure. In this work, a total of 72 samples of non-thermally treated commercial table olives were obtained from different markets of the world. Then, prokaryotic diversity in olive biofilms was investigated by metataxonomic analysis. A total of 660 different OTUs were obtained, belonging to Archaea (2.12%) and Bacteria domains (97.88%). From these, 41 OTUs with a proportion of sequences ≥ 0.01% were studied by compositional data analysis. Only two genera were found in all samples, Lactobacillus, which was the predominant bacteria in the biofilm consortium (median 54.99%), and Pediococcus (26.09%). Celerinatantimonas, Leuconostoc, Alkalibacterium, Pseudomonas, Marinilactibacillus, Weissella, and the family Enterobacteriaceae were also present in at least 80% of samples. Regarding foodborne pathogens, only Enterobacteriaceae, Vibrio, and Staphylococcus were detected in at least 91.66%, 75.00%, and 54.10% of samples, respectively, but their median values were always below 0.15%. Compositional data analysis allowed discriminating between lye treated and natural olive samples, as well as between olives packaged in glass, PET and plastic bags. Leuconostoc, Celerinatantimonas, and Alkalibacterium were the bacteria genera with a higher discriminant power among samples. These results expand our knowledge of the bacteria diversity in olive biofilms, providing information about the sanitary and hygienic status of this ready-to-eat fermented vegetable. In this work, we have used a metataxonomic analysis to study the bacterial biodiversity in three types of commercial dressing and ingredients habitually used in table olive packaging. The bioinformatics analysis showed that salt samples (marine and spring) had the highest biodiversity indexes, followed by the aromatic herbs (thyme, oregano, and fennel) and finally by fermented dressing samples (garlic, pepper, and pepper paste). In salt samples, a significant high presence of Cytophagia , Sphingobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria and Halobacteria classes was observed. On the contrary, the presence of Bacilli class in fermented dressing samples was significantly higher compared to the other samples. Finally, the abundance of Gammaproteobacteria was statistically higher in the samples of herbs. At genus or family taxonomic level, Pseudomonas and diverse non-assigned genus of the Enterobacteriaceae family predominated in many samples of herbs. In fermented dressing samples, a diverse genus belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family appeared in a high relative abundance in pepper paste and garlic, and the presence of Vibrio sp. was detected in pepper. However, Lactobacillus, Weisella, and Pediococcus were the predominant genera found in many of these fermented samples. Salinibacter was the most representative genus in both types of salt samples. Multivariate analysis (PCA) of the metataxonomic data sets discriminated well the samples belonging to the three different groups, showing a high proportion of sequences shared by samples-group. This work aims to evaluate the water regulation ecosystem service in a peri-urban sector of Bahía Blanca, an intermediate city of Argentina. Variations in the level of provision are analyzed within the framework of an urbanization scenario. For this purpose, we used the tool 'Retention of excess precipitation by vegetation cover', included in the ECOSER protocol, which is based on the Curve Number method.Future urbanization in Bahía Blanca peri-urban area would decrease the level of provision of the water regulation ecosystem service between 0.5 and 2.5%. The best response in rainfall retention was observed for the shrubland land cover. Likewise, the provision level of the ecosystem service decreases regarding the Antecedent Runoff Conditions and the amount of rainfall. This study contributes to generating knowledge to understand the dynamics of a particularly important ecosystem service in cities, given its direct relationship with stormwater management. Introduction: Reticular hybrid meshes represent an alternative material for intraperitoneal repair of abdominal hernias. These consist of a reticular mesh coated or interwoven/knitted with inert materials. This study assesses the performance of two reticular polypropylene-containing hybrid meshes, TiMESH (coated with titanium) and DynaMesh (interwoven with polyvinylidene fluoride), in vitro, as well as their efficiency in adhesion prevention and tissue incorporation in an intraperitoneal model. Methods: The mesothelialization capacity of TiMESH and DynaMesh was evaluated in vitro and compared to that of Surgipro (reticular bare polypropylene) and Preclude (laminar expanded polytetrafluoroethylene). Mesh fragments were placed on the intact parietal peritoneum of New Zealand white rabbits (n = 24), and laparoscopy performed 7 days post-surgery. Fourteen days post-implantation, adhesions were evaluated and host tissue incorporation, macrophage response, collagen expression (immunohistochemistry/RT-PCR) and neoperitoneum formation assessed. Adhesions and omental tissue were also examined. Results: Mesh pores in reticular meshes were devoid of cells in the in vitro study. TiMESH, DynaMesh and Surgipro showed similar adhesion rates at 7/14 days and optimal tissue integration, with significant differences in comparison to Preclude. The greatest presence of macrophages was observed for TiMESH and was significant versus that for Preclude. Hybrid meshes revealed significantly higher collagen 1 mRNA expression in implants, with no differences in the levels of collagen 3. Omental samples from animals with a reticular mesh showed significantly greater collagen 1 mRNA levels. Conclusions: The reticular structure of a mesh limits the formation of a continuous mesothelial monolayer in vitro, regardless of its composition. The presence of titanium as a coating or polyvinylidene fluoride interwoven with polypropylene in a reticular structure did not prevent adhesions. The contribution of historical hydrogeomorphology in areas lacking hydrographic information or reliable geomorphological studies represents an interesting complementary tool to delimit potentially floodable spaces. This work aims at determining floodable areas through the historical hydrogeomorphological approach. The unit of analysis taken is the San Bernardo stream basin which is located in the mountain range system of Ventania, Buenos Aires (Argentina). The methodology used is based on different methods and techniques (hydrographic, geomorphologic, biogeographic) which, by complementing one another, allow for the zoning of the flood plain. The flooding events occurring in this area are linked to torrential rainfall events. The consequences range from material damage, to loss of infrastructure and even fatalities, in some cases. Background: Cancer-secreted exovesicles are important for cell-to-cell communication by altering cancer-related signalling pathways. Exovesicles-derived miRNAs (exomiRNAs)-target genes can be useful for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. Methods: ExomiRNA from prostate cancer (PCa) cells (PC-3 and LNCaP) were quantified by qRT-PCR and compared to the healthy cell line RWPE-1 by using miRNome PCR 752 miRNAs Panel. MiRNet database was used to predict exomiRNA-target genes. ExomiRNA-target genes pathway functional enrichment was performed by using Reactome database and Enrichr platform. Protein–protein interaction analysis was carried out by using the STRING database. RNA target-gene sequencing data from The Cancer Genome Atlas Prostate Adenocarcinoma (TCGA-PRAD) database was screened out in 465 PCa patients for candidate gene expression in prostate tumour (PT) tissue and non-pathologic prostate (N-PP) tissue. Signature gene candidates were statistically analysed for diagnosis and prognosis usefulness. Results: A total of 36 exomiRNAs were found downregulated when comparing PCa cells vs a healthy cell line; and when comparing PC-3 vs LNCaP, 14 miRNAs were found downregulated and 52 upregulated. Reactome pathway database revealed altered pathways and genes related to miRNA biosynthesis, miRNA-mediated gene silencing (TNRC6B and AGO1), and cell proliferation (CDK6), among others. Results showed that TNRC6B gene expression was up-regulated in PT tissue compared to N-PP (n = 52 paired samples) and could be useful for diagnostic purposes. Likewise, gene expression levels of CDK6, TNRC6B, and AGO1 were down-regulated in high-risk PT (n = 293) compared to low-risk PCa tissue counterparts (n = 172). When gene expression levels of CDK6, TNRC6B, and AGO1 were tested as a prognostic panel, the results showed that these improve the prognostic power of classical biomarkers. The urban growth of Bahía Blanca city has intervened the northern periurban area with the consequent modification of the natural landscape, in particular the drainage network. Geo-morphological maps are instruments that make possible a temporal analysis and facilitate the visualization of processes and forms of the surface. The GIS software facilitates the analysis of the changes produced in the natural environment due to urban development. The aim of this work is to study the mutual implications between the geo-morphological dynamics and the urbanization process in the northern periurban area of Bahía Blanca city. The identification of geoforms and processes was carried out on the basis of geological documents of the area, visual analysis of high resolution satellite images (2009 and 2015) and field control. A geographic database was implemented using Arc- GIS 10® that enables temporal analysis and the development of thematic cartography. Natural areas modified by urbanization and new periurban areas affected by hydro-geo-morphological dynamics were identified from a quantitative and qualitative cartographic analysis. This work reports the survival (challenge tests) of foodborne pathogen species ( Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella enterica ) in Aloreña de Málaga table olive brines. The inhibitions were fit using a log-linear model with tail implemented in GInaFIT excel software. The olive brine had a considerable inhibitory effect on the pathogens. The residual (final) populations ( Fp ) after 24 h was below detection limit (<1.30 log 10 cfu/mL) for all species assayed. The maximum death rate ( k max ) was 9.98, 51.37, 38.35 and 53.01 h −1 , while the time for 4 log 10 reductions ( 4D r ) was 0.96, 0.36, 0.36 and 0.24 h for E. coli, S. aureus, L. monocytogenes and S. enterica, respectively. Brine dilutions increased Fp and 4Dr , while decreased k max . A cluster analysis showed that E. coli had an overall quite different behaviour being the most resistant species, but the others bacteria behaved similarly, especially S. aureus and S. enterica . Partial Least Squares regression showed that the most influential phenols on microbial survival were EDA (dialdehydic form of decarboxymethyl elenolic acid), HyEDA (EDA linked to hydroxytyrosol), hydroxytyrosol 4-glucoside, tyrosol, and oleoside 11-methyl ester. In the present study, a dose-response model was used to investigate the susceptibility (NIC) and resistance (MIC) of the lactic acid bacteria and yeast populations with respect to five chemical preservatives (fumaric and pyruvic acids, cinnamaldehyde, sodium metabisulphite and natamycin) with potential application in table olives. Results were compared with respect to potassium sorbate, a well-known preservative habitually used in olive packaging. Sodium metabisulphite was the most efficient preservative to control lactic acid bacteria growth (MIC, 50 ppm), followed by cinnamaldehyde (1060 ppm) while pyruvic acid required higher concentrations (3211 ppm). Natamycin (25 ppm) was highly efficient against yeasts, followed by cinnamaldehyde (125 ppm), potassium sorbate (553 ppm), sodium metabisulphite (772 ppm) and pyruvic acid (3038 ppm). Fumaric acid, in the range assayed (0–2000 ppm), did not show any inhibitory effect against these two microbial groups. This survey presents for the first time a comparative study of the efficiency of potential preservatives to control the growth of table olive related microorganisms. This work focuses on the persistence of the putative probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus pentosus TOMC- LAB2 on green Spanish-style Manzanilla olives according to different packaging conditions and storage temperatures. The lactic acid bacteria population decreased with time but the highest survival counts (and lowest yeasts) at the end of storage (8 months) were observed in plastic pouches under nitrogen atmosphere and glass jars with brine stored at 20°C. Molecular techniques showed a 100% presence of the putative probiotic bacteria in biofilms adhered to olive epidermis, while it was absent in PPB (plastic pouches with brine) and in olives stored at 7°C. No changes in NaCl, pH or combined acidity were observed during the storage except for a slight increase in titratable acidity at 20°C. The use of agrochemicals as pure enantiomers avoids the presence of non-active pesticide compounds in the environment. The quality control of these agrochemicals requires the development of new chiral methodologies. In this work, the performance of the monolithic column named poly(O-9-[2-(methacryloyloxy)-ethylcarbamoyl]-10,11-dihydroquinidine-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) (poly(MQD- co -HEMA- co -EDMA)) was assessed as stationary phase for the enantiomeric separation of seven phenoxy acid herbicides (dichlorprop, 2-(4-chlorophenoxy)propionic acid, 2-(3-chlorophenoxy)propionic acid, mecoprop, fenoprop, 2-phenoxypropionic acid, and fenoxaprop) in a nano-liquid chromatography (nano-LC) system. Under optimized conditions (60/40 ( v/v ) ACN/0.1 M ammonium acetate (pH 6.0) at a flow rate of 20 μL/min), it was possible to obtain baseline separation for most of the studied compounds. The analysis of an enantiomerically pure mecoprop commercial herbicide sample which also contained three achiral phenoxy acid herbicides (MCPA, 2,4-D and dicamba) commonly present in these kinds of formulations showed that the use of a 80/20 ( v/v ) ACN/0.1 M ammonium acetate (pH 5.3) enabled the simultaneous separation of these compounds and mecoprop enantiomers in less than 8 min. The analytical characteristics of the methodology were evaluated in terms of selectivity, linearity, precision, accuracy, LOD, and LOQ. Results demonstrated that determined amounts of R-mecoprop in commercial formulations were in agreement with the labeled content and the enantiomeric impurity was below the LOQ. The poly(MQD- co -HEMA- co -EDMA) capillary monolithic column exhibits great potential as a useful and environmental-friendly tool for the quality control of agrochemicals by nano-LC. Abstract: Background: Adhesions commonly appear in patients after abdominal surgery, with considerable individual variation in adhesion composition and severity of the repair process. Here, we address the influence of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β3 and betaglycan in this response, in relation to TGF-β1, in an adhesiogenic rabbit model. Materials and methods: Omental adhesions were recovered 3, 7, 14, and 90 d after the implantation of a polypropylene mesh on the parietal peritoneum in New Zealand White rabbits. Omentum from nonoperated animals served as control. Tissue specimens were examined for TGF-β3 and TGF-β1 (Western blotting, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction), and TGF-β1:TGF-β3 messenger RNA and protein expression ratios were analyzed. Immunohistochemical detection of TGF-β3 and betaglycan was performed. Results: Injury to the omentum led to mobilization of TGF-β3 and betaglycan-expressing cells from milky spots. Fibrous zones in adhesions were simultaneous to the presence of TGF-β1 and the membrane-bound form of betaglycan (7-d adhesions), whereas soluble betaglycan appeared in TGF-β1–positive areas showing limited fibrosis (3-d adhesions). The elevated expression of TGF-β3 concurrent with the presence of membrane-bound form of betaglycan was observed in zones of adipose regeneration (14-d adhesions), whereas zones of fibrous consistency were negative for TGF-β3. Conclusions: Milky spots on the omentum contain inflammatory/immune cells positive for TGF-β3, TGF-β1, and betaglycan, playing a role in the damaged omentum repair. Our observations support the contribution of TGF-β3 to tissue repair through adipose tissue regeneration and the profibrotic role of TGF-β1 and suggest that these effects on the local wound repair response could be driven by the expression of betaglycan in its soluble or membrane-bound form. The wind is one of the elements of the weather that most affect the population in Bahia Blanca city, predominating most part of the year. Due to its high temporal and spatial variability is essential to know their maximum speeds, directions and predominant distribution. The aim of this paper is to analyze winds behavior in its two dimensions, speed and direction, in suburban north part of Bahia Blanca city. Recorded data were analyzed by two weather stations installed in the study area for the period March 2011-September 2011. Although it has been established that postoperative adhesions in the peritoneal cavity are the consequence of injury to the peritoneum, there is much controversy over the nature of the cells giving rise to this neotissue. Here, we establish a novel adhesiogenic model in the rabbit to analyze the phenotype and proliferation in vitro of cells comprising adhesion tissue seven days postsurgery. Adhesion-free omentum tissue was used as control. Cells derived from adhesions and from the control omentum were subcultured and characterized through immunofluorescence and Western blotting procedures to determine markers of cell differentiation and pluripotential, and viability and proliferation assays. Our findings indicate the existence of a mesenchymal population in the omentum revealed by markers of pluripotent cells with high angiogenic capacity. This population seems to be responsible for the adhesions formed in response to mesothelial damage. Depending on the local environment, mesenchymal cells are capable of in vivo differentiation towards at least two different cell phenotypes rendering two types of adhesions with clearly differentiated characteristics. One type of adhesion shows a highly vascularized adipose morphology containing cells differentiating into a vascular lineage. The study area corresponds to the basin of "El Belisario" stream, a small valley among mountains with a surface of 26 km², located in the Ventania System. The location determines the presence of social and physical elements which constitute a high environmental vulnerability facing different kinds of threats such as massive fires and avenue phenomena of a cyclic character and marked seasonal concentration. The aim of this work is to establish links between the occurrence of avenue processes and the variation of water availability in "El Belisario" basin. Newspaper articles were gathered, annual and interannual water balances were made and environmental characteristics, which favour the occurrence of these events, were analyzed. It should be mentioned that the frequency of these phenomena is low; however, its magnitude has highly harmful consequences for the population. Important economical losses are generated, owing to the negative impact on resources-risking human lives and facilities. That is why understanding the dynamics of occurrence of these phenomena is necessary for improved local development and management of resources as well as for the watering process. Biomaterials and their applications are perhaps among the most dynamic areas of research within the field of biomedicine. Any advance in this topic translates to an improved quality of life for recipient patients. One application of a biomaterial is the repair of an abdominal wall defect whether congenital or acquired. In the great majority of cases requiring surgery, the defect takes the form of a hernia. Over the past few years, biomaterials designed with this purpose in mind have been gradually evolving in parallel with new developments in the different surgical techniques. In consequence, the classic polymer prosthetic materials have been the starting point for structural modifications or new prototypes that have always strived to accommodate patients' needs. This evolving process has pursued both improvements in the wound repair process depending on the implant interface in the host and in the material's mechanical properties at the repair site. This last factor is important considering that this site—the abdominal wall—is a dynamic structure subjected to considerable mechanical demands. This review aims to provide a narrative overview of the different biomaterials that have been gradually introduced over the years, along with their modifications as new surgical techniques have unfolded. Simple Summary: While the importance of transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) in cancer development and progression has long been recognized, a successful therapy targeting this cytokine has not been developed yet. The difficulty in blocking the tumor-promoting activity of this factor while maintaining the tumor suppressor effects can compromise the expected outcomes. This systematic review summarizes and discusses the different strategies being tested to regulate TGFβ expression in cancer treatment, as well as their associated side effects. Transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) is a pleiotropic cytokine that participates in a wide range of biological functions. The alterations in the expression levels of this factor, or the deregulation of its signaling cascade, can lead to different pathologies, including cancer. A great variety of therapeutic strategies targeting TGFβ, or the members included in its signaling pathway, are currently being researched in cancer treatment. However, the dual role of TGFβ, as a tumor suppressor or a tumor-promoter, together with its crosstalk with other signaling pathways, has hampered the development of safe and effective treatments aimed at halting the cancer progression. This systematic literature review aims to provide insight into the different approaches available to regulate TGFβ and/or the molecules involved in its synthesis, activation, or signaling, as a cancer treatment. The therapeutic strategies most commonly investigated include antisense oligonucleotides, which prevent TGFβ synthesis, to molecules that block the interaction between TGFβ and its signaling receptors, together with inhibitors of the TGFβ signaling cascade-effectors. Introduction. About 80-95% of patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) develop skin manifestations, which are markers of the patients' immune status. Objective. To describe the dermatologic manifestations and the clinical and sociodemographic factors of hospitalized patients diagnosed with HIV and their correlation with CD4 T-lymphocyte count. Materials and methods. We conducted an observational, cross-sectional, and retrospective study of the medical records of 227 adult patients with HIV diagnosis evaluated by dermatology in a hospital in Medellín, Colombia. Results. We included 227 patient records with 433 dermatologic manifestations, 64.4% of them infectious. The most frequent manifestations were oral candidiasis, condylomata acuminata, and drug reactions. Moreover, a statistically significant relationship was found between disseminated herpes zoster virus and secondary syphilis with a CD4 count between 200-499 cells/mm3 (p=0.04 and 0.028, respectively). There was also a statistically significant relationship between oral candidiasis and a CD4 count of less than 100 cells/mm3 (p=0.008). Conclusions. The relationship between disseminated herpes zoster with CD4 between 200-499 cells/mm3 suggests that, despite having high CD4 counts, severe forms of the disease may occur due to possible T-cell dysfunction and depletion of the immune system. Additionally, the relationship between oral candidiasis and CD4 less than 100 cells/mm3 indicates the potential role of oral candidiasis as an essential marker of weakened immune status in HIV patients. Diabetes mellitus causes severe impairment in the cutaneous wound healing process, which has led to extensive research striving to establish new treatments. In this work, we describe the effects of chitosan hydrogels functionalized with either unfractionated heparin or bemiparin (a low molecular weight heparin, LMWH) as topical treatments in an experimental diabetic wound healing model. Although wound morphometry showed similar values at the end of the study, microscopic analyses revealed impaired healing in diabetic animals in terms of inflammation and tissue formation. However, both types of loaded hydrogels accelerated inflammation resolution and improved the epithelialization process, while showing a neodermal thickness similar to that of nondiabetic animals. Immunohistochemistry analyses revealed an intermediate response in macrophage evolution between diabetic and nondiabetic controls in the treated groups, as well as enhanced collagenization and myofibroblast progression patterns. However, these changes were not accompanied by differences among groups in collagen I, III and TGF-β1 gene expression. Functionalized hydrogels improved diabetes-associated impaired wound healing, thus promoting the progression of the process and inducing the formation of high-quality cicatricial tissue. Although the beneficial healing effect observed after topical treatment with chitosan hydrogels loaded with bemiparin or unfractionated heparin was similar, the chitosan hydrogel loaded with bemiparin is the preferred choice as it exhibited high-quality tissue in the neoformed dermal tissue. Building risk spaces differ according to the history of the urban development and the environmental context of each city. The aim of this work is to analyze historical-territorial periods that generated the construction of flood risk areas in the city of San Carlos de Bariloche, Río Negro, Argentina. The Dagwood Sandwich methodology was applied to analyze the urbanization and its transformations over time and the role played by the environment and the impacts caused by society. Correlations were observed within six historical-territorial crosscutting moments at different scales (local, provincial, national and international) and the development of exposed spaces to different dangers. This methodology allows identifying and acknowledging the current and historical environmental situation, in order to forecast possible trends of urban expansion and the generation of new flood-risk territories. The aim of this study was to analyze whether children with and without difficulties in handwriting, spelling, or both differed in alphabet writing when using a keyboard. The total sample consisted of 1,333 children from Grades 1 through 3. Scores on the spelling and handwriting factors from the Early Grade Writing Assessment (Jiménez, in press) were used to assign the participants to one of four groups with different ability patterns: poor handwriters, poor spellers, a mixed group, and typically achieving students. Groups were equalized by a matching strategy, resulting in a final sample of 352 children. A MANOVA was executed to analyze effects of group and grade on orthographic motor integration (fluency of alphabet writing) and the number of omissions when writing the alphabet (accuracy of alphabet writing) by keyboard writing mode. The results indicated that poor handwriters did not differ from typically achieving children in both variables, whereas the poor spellers did perform below the typical achievers and the poor handwriters. The difficulties of poor handwriters seem to be alleviated by the use of the keyboard; however, children with spelling difficulties might need extra instruction to become fluent keyboard writers. In this work, a total of 72 commercial table olive packages obtained from different international markets were analysed to determine their fungal biodiversity. Viable fungal counts ranged from the detection threshold (<1.6 log 10 CFU/g in 25% of cases) to a maximum of 5.86 log 10 CFU/g. Assignation of fungal taxonomy was carried out through a metataxonomic analysis of the ITS region, which revealed that almost half of the total sequences obtained from all packages corresponded to the Pichia genus (44.08%), followed by Citeromyces (14.45%), Candida (8.07%), and Wickerhamomyces (6.95%). In lower proportions were also detected other genera such as Starmerella (3.60%), Saccharomyces (2.24%), Debaryomyces (2.08%), and Dekkera (2.05%). The statistical analysis allowed to link certain taxa to specific types of elaboration (lye treated, green, and black natural olives), presentation (pitted, whole, or sliced samples), and packaging material/system (glass, PET, plastic bags, and vacuum). Likewise, Zygotorulaspora genus was especially sensitive to the presence of potassium sorbate, while other genera such as Sporobolomyces , Moniliella , and Gibellulopsis were more abundant in packages treated with this preservative. Lastly, potential pathogenic fungal genera such as Alternaria, Kodamaea, Lodderomyces, Malasessia, or Aspergillus were detected in low proportions (<0.3%), although with higher representation in some individual samples. After moisture, fat is the major constituent of table olives. However, scarce studies have been carried out to determine the influence of microorganisms and type of processing on the modification of their quality indexes. The present survey studies the influence of lipolytic ( Candida boidinii TOMC Y5 and Wickerhamomyces anomalus TOMC Y10) and nonlipolytic ( Debaryomyces etchellsii TOMC Y9 and Pichia galeiformis TOMC Y27) yeasts on the oil quality indexes of Manzanilla and Hojiblanca green fruits processed as directly brined and lye-treated table olives. Overall, the inocula scarcely used available sugars, except the lipolytic C. boidinii strain in lye-treated olives. Acetic acid production was limited in all conditions, except for the D. etchellsii strain in directly brined Manzanilla fruits. Ethanol formation was also reduced, although the W. anomalus (in both types of elaboration) and the C. boidinii (in lye-treated olives) strains produced significantly higher proportions. Apparently, changes in the oil quality indexes of processed olives were not related to the presence of yeasts, and hence, could have been caused by the endogenous activity of the fruits. A principal component analysis using the microbiological, physicochemical, and oil quality data supported this hypothesis, grouping treatments according to olive variety and type of elaboration, while segregation due to yeast inocula was not observed. This work applies metataxonomic, standard statistics, and compositional data (CoDa) techniques to study the bacterial diversity of spoiled and normal Spanish-style table olive fermentations, analysing a total of 10-tons of industrial fermentation containers from two processing yards. Forty percent were affected by butyric, sulfidic, or putrid spoilage, while 60% followed the ordinary fermentation course. The samples were obtained at 30 days of fermentation, determining their 16S rRNA gene Amplicon Sequence Variant compositions (ASVs). The butyric containers showed a bacterial profile strongly associated with the genera Enterococcus , Leuconostoc , and Atlantibacter , but also with Lactiplantibacillus and Melissococcus , and less confident to Raoultella , Enterobacter , Serratia , and Celerinatantimonas. The sulfidic fermentation was linked to Alkalibacterium and, to a lesser extent, Marinilactibacillus and the absence of Lactiplantibacillus. Putrid spoilage was mainly related to Halolactibacillus and Alkalibacterium. Sulfidic/putrid (together) differed from butyric spoilage by the presence of Alkalibacterium / Marinilactibacillus as well as by Halomonas / Halanaerobium. Lactiplantibacillus dominated normal fermentations, but Vibrio was also frequently found (0–46%), apparently not causing any alteration. These results contribute to a better microbial characterisation of non-zapatera spoiled table olive fermentations. Table olives are the most important fermented vegetable in the Mediterranean countries. In a continuous effort to improve the quality of this food, this work applies an experimental design with four variables to study the use of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, 2.85 µL/L) in combination with a light heat shock (65 °C, 5 min) and dimethyl dicarbonate (DMDC, 83 mg/L), during the processing of Spanish style and natural table olives. Fruits processed in the Spanish style exhibited higher moisture levels, luminance, and combined acidity. On the contrary, natural olives contained more sugars, had a firmer texture, and displayed a greener colour. Our results show that applying 1-MCP, heat shock, and DMDC can positively impact the processing of Spanish style and natural table olives and influence their physicochemical characteristics. Adding DMDC to the initial brine caused colour degradation but lowered the pH. Using 1-MCP with a light heat shock improved the sugar content and luminance of olives and increased the titratable acidity in the brine. Applying 1-MCP to the Spanish style enhanced the luminosity (brightness) and, when combined with DMDC, led to the lowest pH levels. Further research at an industrial scale is necessary to validate these results and study their influence on microorganisms. Background: When repairing an abdominal wall defect, sometimes a prosthetic mesh needs to be placed directly on the parietal peritoneum. Although the standard mesh for this purpose is the laminar implant expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), it is gradually being replaced by the laminar collagen-based meshes. This study was designed to assess the intraperitoneal behavior of three of these biomeshes, mainly in terms of their susceptibility to adhesion formation. Methods: Two 3-cm × 3-cm fragments of prosthetic material were placed on the parietal peritoneum in male New Zealand White rabbits in the following combinations: PTFE and CollaMend, PTFE and Permacol, or PTFE and Surgisis. The meshes were fixed at the four corners with individual 4/0 polypropylene sutures. Adhesion formation was quantified by sequential laparoscopy and image analysis performed at 3, 7, 14, and 90 days postimplant. All animals were killed at 90 days and the mesh specimens were subjected to microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Results: Intensely vascularized adhesions to all the implants were observed, although Surgisis showed the lowest percentage of adhesions at each follow-up time. Adhesions had stabilized by 7-14 days. The PTFE meshes were enveloped by a layer of macrophages and connective tissue, bounded by a monolayer of mesothelial cells. Permacol and CollaMend showed similar histological behavior, including cell ingrowth through their fenestrations with no signs of degradation detected at 90 days. In contrast, the Surgisis mesh at 90 days was practically replaced with neoformed tissue. Conclusions: No difference in susceptibility to adhesion formation was noted in the crosslinked collagen meshes compared to PTFE meshes. The noncrosslinked collagen mesh Surgisis showed the best behavior in that it induced fewer adhesions. Background Prior studies suggest impaired collagen metabolism involving the whole abdominal wall including the skin in patients with abdominal hernia. We compared expression patterns of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and its modulators membrane type-1-matrix metalloproteinase (MT-1 MMP) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) in the skin of patients with and without primary inguinal hernia. Materials and methods Skin biopsy specimens from abdominal wall incisions were obtained during surgery from patients with direct inguinal hernia, indirect inguinal hernia or without hernia (controls). MMP-2, MT-1 MMP and TIMP-2 expression were determined using immunocytochemistry and immunoblotting in intact tissue and in cultured fibroblasts isolated from the biopsies. The degradation activity of MMP-2 was semiquantitatively determined using zymography. Results Significantly greater active MMP-2 expression was observed in skin fibroblasts obtained from patients with direct hernia compared with controls. MT1-MMP expression was directly correlated with MMP-2 expression with most intense staining produced in patients with direct or indirect inguinal hernia. TIMP-2, was maximally expressed in the control group, with significantly diminished expression levels recorded in the hernia groups. Conclusions Our findings indicate active MMP-2 upregulation in the abdominal skin of patients with direct inguinal hernia. This metalloproteinase plays a role in matrix degradation, weakening the abdominal wall. Skin disorders and previously described transversalis fascia defects in these patients could point to a systemic collagen metabolism abnormality as a risk factor for direct hernia. The relationship between climate and tourism has implications at all spatial scales. Yet the climatic sensitivity of tourism varies according to place-specific tourism types in which it takes place and activity type. Therefore, from comfort approach, the climatic features of destination are an important resource for planning. This paper evaluates the climate comfort of Argentina as an intangible resource for tourism. The analysis builds on spatial modelling of the Tourism Climate Index (TCI), calculated for 69 weather stations uniformly distributed throughout the country. The mean annual TCI in Argentina is 73, indicating "very good" climatic-tourist comfort conditions for tourism. However, the spatial distribution of the index exhibits a maximum diagonal band and two mirror regions defined by decreasing scores towards NE and SW. This is attributed to the spatial distribution of the sub-indices conforming the TCI. Daily thermal comfort and wind speed negatively influence Patagonia, while in Litoral, they counterbalance the high amounts of precipitation. The main purpose of this study was to validate the curriculum-based measure Indicadores de Progreso de Aprendizaje en Matemáticas (IPAM [Indicators of Basic Early Math Skills]) in a local, Spanish-speaking context. This tool has been designed to identify first-grade students at risk for mathematics learning disabilities. The IPAM includes five measures (i.e., quantity discrimination, multi-digit computation, missing number, single-digit computation, and place value), which were analyzed as single measures and as part of a composite measure. In this study, 176 first graders were administered the curriculum-based measurement IPAM at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. The results showed that the composite measure of the IPAM was the best indicator of risk status. Reliability and concurrent and predictive validity results were adequate. Furthermore, receiver operating curve analysis and hierarchical linear model supported the capacity of the IPAM to correctly identify students' risk status and growth rate during first grade. The continuous interaction between human activities and environment leads to adopting a broad approach for studying watershed systems. Undoubtedly, designing an efficient but also sustainable river-basin management plan requires considering the ecosystem, the economic and social aspects related to the use of natural resources. Given the practical and theoretical relevance that stakeholders' participation has achieved in the frame of new approaches for watershed management, this paper aims to identify the possibility of implementing a collaborative strategy in the particular case of the Sauce Grande River Basin (SGRB), Argentina. Such implementation requires the fulfilment of some key conditions that heighten or hinder their execution. Our results indicate that, although the complexity of the basin makes necessary the implementation of a collaborative plan, it is not plausible in the short term. Some issues, such as the engagement of all stakeholders (inside and outside the basin), and the simplification and coordination of the norms and levels of decision making, should be taken into account for implementing a collaborative management in the basin. Otherwise, the implementation could have a non-expected result on the socio-ecological system, generating an immediate reject to more participative strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Lightweight (LW) polypropylene (PP) meshes better adapt to host tissue, causing less fibrosis and inflammatory responses than high-density meshes. Mesh fixation using tissue adhesives (TA) that replace conventional sutures may improve the process of hernia repair and tissue trauma. This preclinical study compares the behavior of different cyanoacrylate-based adhesives in the fixation of LW-PP meshes for hernia repair. Methods: Partial abdominal wall defects were repaired using LW-PP Optilene meshes in New Zealand rabbits. The following groups were established according to the mesh fixation method: Suture (control), Glubran 2 (n-butyl), Ifabond (n-hexyl), SafetySeal (n-butyl) and Evobond (n-octyl). At 14, 90 and 180 days after surgery, the recovered implants were examined to assess the host tissue integration, the macrophage response and the biomechanical strength. Results: All the groups showed optimal host tissue incorporation regardless of the fixation procedure. Significantly increased levels of collagen 1 and collagen 3 gene expression (p<0.001) were observed at 14 days compared to the medium- and long-term durations, where the Suture and Glubran groups showed the highest expression of collagen 1. All the adhesives increased the macrophage reaction (p<0.001) compared to sutures at all implant times. Maximal macrophage response was observed in the short-term Glubran group (p<0.01) compared to the rest of the groups. Although SafetySeal and Evobond did not reach the biomechanical resistance of sutures at 14 days, all the adhesives did reach this level in the medium- to long-term periods, providing significantly higher resistance (p<0.05). Conclusions: All the cyanoacrylates, despite inducing a significantly increased macrophage response versus sutures, showed optimal host tissue integration and long-term mechanical behavior; thus, they might be good choices for LW-PP mesh hernia repairs. Nowadays, our knowledge of the fungal biodiversity in fermented vegetables is limited although these microorganisms could have a great influence on the quality and safety of this kind of food. This work uses a metagenetic approach to obtain basic knowledge of the fungal community ecology during the course of fermentation of natural Aloreña de Málaga table olives, from reception of raw material to edible fruits. For this purpose, samples of brines and fruits were collected from two industries in Guadalhorce Valley (Málaga, Spain) at different moments of fermentation (0, 7, 30 and 120 days). The physicochemical and microbial counts performed during fermentation showed the typical evolution of this type of processes, mainly dominated by yeasts in apparent absence of Enterobacteriaceae and Lactobacillaceae. High-throughput barcoded pyrosequencing analysis of ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region showed a low biodiversity of the fungal community, with the presence at 97% identity of 29 different fungal genera included in 105 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). The most important genera in the raw material at the moment of reception in the industry were Penicillium, Cladosporium, Malassezia, and Candida, whilst after 4 months of fermentation in brines Zygotorulaspora and Pichia were predominant, whereas in fruits were Candida, Penicillium, Debaryomyces and Saccharomyces. The fungal genera Penicillium, Pichia, and Zygotorulaspora were shared among the three types of substrates during all the course of fermentation, representing the core fungal population for this table olive specialty. A phylogenetic analysis of the ITS sequences allowed a more accurate assignment of diverse OTUs to Pichia manshurica, Candida parapsilosis/C. tropicalis, Candida diddensiae, and Citeromyces nyonensis clades. This study highlights the existence of a complex fungal consortium in olive fermentations including phytopathogenic, saprofitic, spoilage and fermentative genera. Insights into the ecology, identification and quantification of fungi species in olive fermentation will facilitate the design of new strategies to improve the quality and safety of this fermented vegetable. In this work, metataxonomic-compositional data analysis was applied to study the influence of inoculation, type of ecosystem (brine or fruit), and time of fermentation (0, 24, and 83 days) on the bacterial composition dynamic during industrial Manzanilla Spanish-style green table olive fermentations. Differences in the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics between inoculated and spontaneous fermentations were scarce, except for the high lactic acid bacteria population (>10 million CFU/g) in the inoculated olive biofilms. The metataxonomic analysis showed eight relevant taxa (Lactiplantibacillus, Vibrio, Halolactibacillus, Aerococcus, Catenococcus, Salinivibrio, Alkalibacterium, and Marinilactibacillus) and absence of pathogens, but the microbiota composition markedly changed throughout fermentation. At the process onset, the main genera were Vibrio, Halolactibacillus, Marinilactibacillus, and Alkalibacterium, while Lactiplantibacillus was almost absent. Regardless of inoculation, Lactiplantibacillus became the predominant genus as the fermentation progressed, albeit Vibrio, Marinilactibacillus, Alkalibacterium, and Halolactibacillus also persisted until the end of the process (but did not cause spoilage). Ferrimonas genus was detected for the first time in table olives, being found in 71% of the samples. Besides, there was more bacterial biodiversity in the brine ecosystem than olive biofilms. Overall, inoculation led to more homogenous and equilibrated bacterial populations at the end of the process. Materials and Methods. 7 × 5 cm defects were created in the anterior abdominal wall of New Zealand White rabbits and repaired by securing different prostheses to the edges of the defect with a running 4/0 polypropylene suture. The lightweight biomaterials compared were two nonabsorbable meshes: Parietene® and Optilene elastic® , and two partially absorbable prostheses: Vypro II® and Ultrapro®. At 14 and 90 days postimplant, tissue/prosthesis specimens were subjected to histological, immunohistochemical, shrinkage, and biomechanical analyses. Results. Adhesion formation on the peritoneum-facing surface of the meshes was significantly less extensive in the meshes with absorbable components at 90 days postimplant. The newly formed tissue around the prosthetic filaments was comprised of collagen fibers, fibroblasts, blood vessels, and macrophages. The partially absorbable meshes showed higher macrophage proportions (due to remnants of absorbable material and their structure) than the nonabsorbable meshes at 90 days, although differences were not significant. At 90 days postimplant, similar tensile strengths were recorded for all the implants. Conclusions. All the prosthetic materials induced good host tissue ingrowth, with no significant differences in tensile strength observed. Our findings suggest that partially absorbable lightweight prostheses could offer advantages over nonabsorbable lightweight meshes since less foreign material persists in the recipient, improving abdominal wall compliance. Prosthetic mesh infection is a devastating complication of abdominal hernia repair which impairs natural healing in the implant area, leading to increased rates of patient morbidity, mortality, and prolonged hospitalization. This preclinical study was designed to assess the effects on abdominal wall tissue repair of coating meshes with a chlorhexidine or rifampicin-carboxymethylcellulose biopolymer gel in a Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infection model. Partial abdominal wall defects were created in New Zealand white rabbits (n = 20). Four study groups were established according to whether the meshes were coated or not with each of the antibacterial gels. Three groups were inoculated with S. aureus and finally repaired with lightweight polypropylene mesh. Fourteen days after surgery, implanted meshes were recovered for analysis of the gene and protein expression of collagens, macrophage phenotypes, and mRNA expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Compared to uncoated meshes, those coated with either biopolymer gel showed higher collagen 1/3 messenger RNA and collagen I protein expression, relatively increased VEGF mRNA expression, a significantly reduced macrophage response, and lower relative amounts of MMPs mRNAs. Background: The prosthetic materials currently used to repair abdominal wall defects sometimes have to be placed in contact with the visceral peritoneum. This interface is often a site of complications such as intestinal obstruction or fistulas due to adhesions. The aim of this study was to follow the process of adhesion formation in several prosthetic materials by sequential laparoscopy. Material and Methods: Defects (7 × 5 cm) were created in the abdominal wall of 30 New Zealand White rabbits and repaired using Surgipro polypropylene mesh (PP), Ultrapro monocryl-prolene mesh (UP), Dual Mesh expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), Composix (PP-ePTFE), Parietex Composite (polyester with collagen-polyethylene glycol-glycerol coating [PO-gl]), or PL-PU99 (PP-polyurethane) patches fixed to the edges of the defect by running polypropylene suture. Adhesions to the implants were laparoscopically determined at 3, 7, and 14 days after surgery. Results: Percentage adhesion scores were significantly lower for ePTFE, PP-ePTFE, PO-gl, and PP-PU, compared to PP or UP. No differences were observed in adhesion scores recorded at 3, 7, and 14 days postimplant. Reticular prostheses were infiltrated by disorganized scar tissue with fibers concentric to the mesh filaments. In contrast, ePTFE implants were encapsulated by organized tissue, with fibers running parallel to the surface of biomaterial. All three composites achieved good recipient tissue integration and a homogeneous, organized, and well-vascularized neoperitoneum. Conclusion: At 14 days postimplant, laminar prostheses and composites showed similar results in terms of adhesion formation and integration within host tissue. Stem cells derived from adult tissues may serve as cell therapy to enhance the healing process in skin wounds. This study was designed to evaluate the use of autologous muscle-derived stem cells in an experimental skin wound model in terms of their efficiency at promoting tissue repair/regeneration. Muscle-derived cells obtained from the dorsal muscle of New Zealand rabbits were cultured in vitro for 2 weeks. The cell population was identified using the satellite markers CD34, m-cadherin and Myf5, and the proliferative capacity of the adult stem cells was determined. The population was then fluorescently labeled with PKH26 and seeded onto a circular 2 cm diameter defect created on the dorsal side of the ear of the rabbit from which the cells had been harvested. Similar defects on the contra lateral ears were left untreated to form the control group. Fourteen days later, specimens were taken for light, transmission, and scanning electron microscopy, as well as for immunolabeling with antibodies against vimentin, α-actin, desmin, myosin, fibronectin, and cytokeratin 14. Areas of wound contraction and reepithelialization were determined by image analysis. Wound contraction was significantly greater in the control than the treatment group ( p<0.05); control specimens also showed more myosin expression. Reepithelialized areas were significantly greater in the treatment group ( p<0.05). Control wounds showed nonepithelialized areas and inflammatory granulation tissue. Reepithelialization occurred as epidermal tongues of fusiform cells. Background: Biological approaches to intervertebral disc (IVD) restoration and/or regeneration have become of increasing interest. However, the IVD comprises a viscoelastic system whose biological replacement remains challenging. The present study sought to design load-sharing two-component model systems of circular, nested, concentric elements reflecting the nucleus pulposus and annulus fibrosus. Specifically, we wanted to investigate the effect of architectural design variations on (1) model system failure loads when testing the individual materials either separately or homogeneously mixed, and (2) also evaluate the potential of modulating other mechanical properties of the model systems. Methods: Two sets of softer and harder biomaterials, 0.5% and 5% agarose vs. 0.5% agarose and gelatin, were used for fabrication. Architectural design variations were realized by varying ring geometries and amounts while keeping the material composition across designs comparable. Results: Variations in the architectural design, such as lamellar width, number, and order, combined with choosing specific biomaterial properties, strongly influenced the biomechanical performance of IVD constructs. Biomechanical characterization revealed that the single most important parameter, in which the model systems vastly exceeded those of the individual materials, was failure load. The model system failure loads were 32.21- and 84.11-fold higher than those of the agarose materials and 55.03- and 2.14-fold higher than those of the agarose and gelatin materials used for system fabrication. The compressive strength, dynamic stiffness, and viscoelasticity of the model systems were always in the range of the individual materials. Conclusions: Relevant architecture-promoted biomechanical performance-tuning of tissue-engineered constructs for biological IVD replacement can be realized by slight modifications in the design of constructs while preserving the materials' compositions. Minimal variations in the architectural design can be used to precisely control structure–function relations for IVD constructs rather than choosing different materials. These fundamental findings have important implications for efficient tissue-engineering of IVDs and other load-bearing tissues, as potential implants need to withstand high in situ loads.
