Abstract: We present the first measurement of the angular distribution for the exclusive process p ¯ p → ψ ( 2 S ) → e + e − based on a sample of 6844 events collected by the Fermilab E835 experiment. We find that the angular distribution is well described by the expected functional form d N d cos θ ∗ ∝ 1 + λ cos 2 θ ∗ , where θ ∗ is the angle between the antiproton and the electron in the center of mass frame, with λ = 0.67 ± 0.15 ( stat ) ± 0.04 ( sys ) . The measured value for λ implies a small but non-zero ψ ( 2 S ) helicity 0 formation amplitude in p ¯ p , comparable to what is observed in J / ψ decays to baryon pairs.

Abstract: We present measurements of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurement uses a data sample of 23x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BbarB decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we find events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a CP eigenstate containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the standard model is proportional to sin2beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result is sin2beta = 0.34+/-0.20 (stat)+/-0.05 (syst).

Abstract: Fermilab experiment E835 studies the direct formation of charmonium states in proton-antiproton annihilations, obtained by intersecting the p beam of the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator with an internal hydrogen jet target. In this paper we report the preliminary results from the 1996/1997 run, in particular about η c mass and width, search for η ′ c and first observation of the χ 0 state in p p annihilations.

Abstract: Purely leptonic decays of the charged D meson have been studied using the reaction e + e − →D ∗+ D − at a center of mass energy of 4.03 GeV. A search was performed for D→μνμ recoiling against a D0 or D+ which had been reconstructed from its hadronic decay products. A single event candidate was found in the reaction e + e − →D ∗+ D − , where D ∗+ →π + D 0 with the D0→K−π+, and the recoiling D− decaying via D − →μ − ν μ . This yields a branching fraction value B(D→μνμ)=0.08−0.05−0.02+0.16+0.05%, and a corresponding value of the pseudoscalar decay constant fD=300−150−40+180+80 MeV.

Abstract: We report the background-free observation of atomic antihydrogen, produced by interactions of an antiproton beam with a hydrogen gas jet target in the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator. We measure the cross section of the reaction $\overline{p}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\overline{H}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ for $\overline{p}$ beam momenta between 5203 and 6232 MeV/ $c$ to be $1.12\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.14\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.09$ pb.

Abstract: We report the first observation of the (radiative) decay Jψ→e+e−γ. Our data are from an experiment in which Jψ is formed in antiproton-proton annihilations. The observed rate is consistent with a QED calculation based on final state radiation. Our measurement gives a branching ratio for this mode of (8.8±1.3±0.4)×10−3 for γ energy>100 MeV.

Abstract: The Beijing Spectrometer (BES) Collaboration has observed exclusive pair production of D_s mesons at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider (BEPC) at a center-of-mass energy of 4.03 GeV. The D_s mesons are detected in the φπ^+, K¯^(*0)K^+, and K¯^0K^+ decay modes; two fully reconstructed events yield the value (3.9_(-1.9-1.1)^(+5.1+1.8))% for the D_s branching fraction to φπ. This is the first direct, model-independent measurement of this quantity.

Abstract: DART is the name of the data acquisition effort for Fermilab experiments taking data in the '94-'95 time frame and beyond. Its charge is to provide a common system of hardware and software, which can be easily configured and extended to meet the wide range of data acquisition requirements of the experiments. Its strategy is to provide incrementally functional data acquisition systems to the experiments at frequent intervals to support the ongoing DA activities of the experiments. DART is a collaborative development effort between the experimenters and the Fermilab Computing Division. Experiments collaborating in DART cover a range of requirements from 400 Kbytes/sec event readout using a single DA processor, to 200 Mbytes/sec event readout involving 10 parallel readout streams, 10 VME event building planes and greater than 1000 MIPs of event filter processing. We describe the requirements, architecture, and plans for the project and report on its current status. >

Abstract: We present a measurement and comparison of the [chi][sub [ital c]1] and [chi][sub [ital c]2] production cross sections determined from interactions of 300-GeV/[ital c] [pi][sup [plus minus]] and [ital p] with a Li target. We find [chi][sub [ital c]1]/[chi][sub [ital c]2] production ratios of 0.52[sub [minus]0.27][sup +0.57] and 0.08[sub [minus]0.15][sup +0.25] from reactions induced by [pi][sup [plus minus]] and [ital p], respectively.

Abstract: We report on a study of the angular distribution in the reaction $\overline{p}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$. Using a sample of 1904 events, we find that the contribution of helicity zero in the formation process is ${B}_{0}^{2}l0.22$ (90% C.L.), and that the normalized quadrupole amplitude in the radiative decay is ${a}_{2}=\ensuremath{-}0.14\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06$. The normalized radiative decay octupole amplitude ${a}_{3}$ is found to be consistent with zero.

Abstract: Experiment 705 at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has designed, built, and operated a large acceptance, highly segmented electromagnetic shower calorimeter using SF5 lead glass, SCG1-C scintillating glass, and two types of gas-based fine-grained hodoscopes. The calorimeter was used to reconstruct photons and electrons with energies ranging from a few GeV/ c 2 to over 100 GeV/ c 2 in 300 GeV/ c pion and proton interactions on a lithium target at instantaneous interaction rates approaching several MHz. Construction details of the calorimeter are given. The readout electronics, calibration, and algorithms used to reconstruct the positions and energies of showering particles are discussed. Energy resolution, position resolution, and reconstruction efficiency are assessed using both calibration electron beams and electrons and π 0 mesons reconstructed in 300 GeV/ c interactions.

Abstract: We present measurements of the 2π0 mass spectrum in proton—antiproton annihilations. The f2 (1520) resonance is strongly produced in the 3π0 channel. Its production along with an η is observed, but strongly suppressed. Other features are seen in the data, including the f2 (1270) and structures at 2000 MeV/c2 and above.

Abstract: The E760 Collaboration has studied the reaction [ital [bar p]p][r arrow][chi][sub 2][r arrow][gamma][gamma] using a hydrogen gas jet target in the Fermilab antiproton acumulator ring. The following values are obtained for the branching ratio and partial width to two photons; [ital B]([chi][sub 2][r arrow][gamma][gamma])=(1.60[plus minus]0.45)[times]10[sup [minus]4] and [Gamma]([chi][sub 2][r arrow][gamma][gamma])=321[plus minus]95 eV.

Abstract: We report new measurements for the mass, width, and branching ratios for the [ital J]/[psi] and the [psi][prime]. These charmonium states are formed exclusively in [ital [bar p]p] annihilations at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator ring, where stochastically cooled antiprotons are brought into collision with the protons of an in- ternal hydrogen gas jet target. The antiproton energy is precisely controlled and measured allowing an accurate measurement of the resonance parameters. From the shape of the excitation curves we find that the widths of [ital J]/[psi] and [psi][prime] are [Gamma]([ital J]/[psi])=99[plus minus]12[plus minus]6 keV and [Gamma]([psi][prime])=306[plus minus]36[plus minus]16 keV, and that the mass of the [ital J]/[psi] is 3096.87[plus minus]0.03[plus minus]0.03 MeV/[ital c][sup 2]. For the [ital J]/[psi] we obtain [ital B]([ital J]/[psi][r arrow][ital [bar p]p])[ital B]([ital J]/[psi][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]]) =(1.14[sup +0.16][sub [minus]0.12][plus minus]0.10)[times]10[sup [minus]4]; for the [psi][prime] we obtain [ital B]([psi][prime][r arrow][ital [bar p]p])[[ital B]([psi][prime][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]]) +[ital B]([psi][prime][r arrow][ital J]/[psi][ital X])[ital B]([ital J]/[psi][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]])] =(1.17[sub [minus]0.12][sup +0.14][plus minus]0.08)[times]10[sup [minus]5].

Abstract: The production of the [chi][sub 1] and [chi][sub 2] states of charmonium has been observed in 300 GeV/[ital c] [pi][sup [plus minus]][ital N] and [ital pN] interactions. The fraction of the total inclusive [ital J]/[psi] production due to radiative [chi] decay has been determined to be 0.40[plus minus]0.04, 0.37[plus minus]0.03, and 0.30[plus minus]0.04 for the [pi][sup +], [pi][sup [minus]], and proton data, respectively. Total cross sections have been obtained of 131[plus minus]18[plus minus]14 and 188[plus minus]30[plus minus]21 nb/nucleon in the 300 GeV/[ital c] [pi][sup [minus]][ital N] interactions for [chi][sub 1] and [chi][sub 2] production. By measuring the contributions to the [ital J]/[psi] production due to both [psi][prime] and radiative [chi] decay, the cross sections for direct [ital J]/[psi] production have been determined to be 97[plus minus]14, 102[plus minus]14, and 89[plus minus]12 nb/nucleon for [pi][sup +], [pi][sup [minus]], and protons, respectively.

Abstract: Hadroproduction of the {ital J}/{psi} and {psi}{prime} states has been studied in 300-GeV/{ital c} proton, antiproton, and {pi}{sup {plus minus}}Li interactions. Both total and differential cross sections in {ital x}{sub {ital F}} and {ital p}{sub {ital T}} have been measured for the {ital J}/{psi} for the {pi}{sup {plus minus}}, proton, and antiproton interactions. The ratio of {psi}{prime} to {ital J}/{psi} production has been determined for the four types of beam particles.

Abstract: The design and implementation of the ambient and configuration databases of the BaBar experiment are presented. The Detector Control architecture is used as an example to describe the user interface for storing and retrieving the ambient and configuration data. To provide access to the ambient data before and after are stored in the database a CORBA server has been developed and implemented. It allows Java based browsers to display the data while they are being accumulated.

Abstract: The resonance parameters of the charmonium ground state, η c (1 1 S 0 ) , have been measured by means of the reaction p p→η c →γγ . The mass and total width are determined to be 2984.1±2.1±1.0 MeV/ c 2 and 20.4 +7.7 −6.7 ±2.0 MeV, respectively. The product of branching ratios B( p p→η c )B(η c →γγ) is determined to be 22.4 +3.8 −3.7 ±2.0 ×10 −8 , from which B(η c →γγ)= 1.87 +0.32+0.95 −0.31−0.50 ×10 −4 , and Γ ( η c → γγ )=3.8 +1.1+1.9 −1.0−1.0 keV are derived using B(η c → p p)=(12±4)×10 −4 from the literature.

Abstract: We report on a study of the angular distributions in the radiative decay of the ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c1}$ and ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c2}$ states formed in $\overline{p}p$ annihilations. These distributions depend on the dynamics of the formation process and the multipole structure of the radiative decay. Using 2090 ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c1}$ and 5908 ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c2}$ events, we have measured the fractional magnetic quadrupole amplitude to be ${a}_{2}({\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c1})\ensuremath{\simeq}M2/E1=0.002\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.032,$ and ${a}_{2}({\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c2})=\ensuremath{-}{0.093}_{\ensuremath{-}0.041}^{+0.039}.$ We have also measured the square of the helicity 0 fractional amplitude in the ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c2}$ formation process to be ${B}_{0}^{2}=0.13\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08.$

Abstract: We propose an experiment to measure the Lamb shift and fine structure (the intervals 2s{sub 1/2}{minus}2p{sub 1/2} and 2p{sub 1/2}{minus}2p{sub 3/2}) in antihydrogen. A sample of 10000 antihydrogen atoms at a momentum of 8.85GeV/c suffices to measure the Lamb shift to 5{percent} and the fine structure to 1{percent}. Atomic collisions excite antihydrogen atoms to states with n=2; field ionization in a Lorentz-transformed laboratory magnetic field then prepares a particular n=2 state, and is used again to analyze that state after it is allowed to oscillate in a region of zero field. Abstract: The mass of the \ensuremath{\tau} lepton has been measured at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider using the Beijing Spectrometer. A search near threshold for ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ was performed. Candidate events were identified by requiring that one \ensuremath{\tau} decay via \ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\nu}\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}, and the other via \ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\nu}\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}. The mass value, obtained from a fit to the energy dependence of the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ cross section, is ${\mathit{m}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}$=1776.${9}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}0.5}^{+0.4}$\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 MeV.

Abstract: The Beijing Spectrometer (BES) experiment has observed purely leptonic decays of the D_s meson in the reaction e^+e^-→D_s^+D_s^- at a c.m. energy of 4.03 GeV. Three events are observed in which one D_s decays hadronically to φπ, K̅ ^(*0)K, or K̅^0K, and the other decays leptonically to μν_μ or τν_τ. With the assumption of μ-τ universality, values of the branching fraction, B(D_s→μν_μ) = (1.5_(-0.6-0.2)^(+1.3+0.3))%, and the D_s pseudoscalar decay constant, f_D_s = (4.3_(-1.3-0.4)^(+1.5+0.4))×10^2 MeV, are obtained.

Abstract: Fermilab experiment E-760 has confirmed the f2(1520) state in the 3πo final state in antiproton-proton annihilations in-flight (~3.0 to 3.6 GeV c.m. energy), seen previously by Crystal Barrel and other groups at CERN at rest. The f2(1520) is also seen in its 2πo decay mode in the 2πoη channel and 2η decay mode in the πo2η channel. There are indications of this state in the 3η decay channel. The invariant mass spectrum is rich in states near 2 GeV, and amplitude and spin/parity analysis of the Dalitz plot is in progress in this mass region.

Abstract: E760 is a fixed target experiment dedicated to the study of charmonium spectroscopy in pp annihilations. Results on X1 and X2 resonance parameters from 1990 data taking are presented, consisting of precise measurement of mass, total width and partial width to pp. A preliminary result is presented on the first direct determination of ϱ' width from line shape analysis.

Abstract: We report on a study of the χ 1 ( 3 P 1 ) and χ 2 ( 3 P 2 ) states of charmonium formed in antiproton-proton annihilations. An energy scan through the resonances, performed with a very narrow momentum-band beam of antiprotons intersecting a hydrogen jet target, enables us to perform very precise measurements of the mass and the total width of the two resonances. From a sample of 513 χ1 and 585 χ2 events we find Mχ1 = (3510.53±0.13) MeV/c2, Mχ2 = (3556.15±0.14) MeV/c2, Γχ1 = (0.88±0.14) MeV and Γχ2 = (1.98±0.18) MeV. From our measurement of the quantity Γ( R → p p ) × BR(R → J ψ → e + e − ) , using known branching ratios, we obtain Λ(χ 1 → p p) = (69±13) eV and Λ(χ 2 → p p) = (180±31) eV .

Abstract: A fine-grain hodoscope to measure the position of showers in the outer (>52 cm) region of the E-705 electromagnetic calorimeter is described. The hodoscope is constructed with two layers of vertical conducting plastic tubes for the X position measurement of showers. Y position measurement of showers was accomplished by cathode-induced horizontal strips. A 50/50-ethane mixture bubbled through isopropyl alcohol at 0 degrees C was circulated through the tubes in parallel. The tubes were operated at +1.925 kV on the wire (below the region of saturated avalanche) in the limited proportionality mode. The hodoscope is described, and results are presented for the position resolution, shower width, and charge detected as a function of calibration electron energy. >

Abstract: A 544-channel low-noise, high-rate precision charge-amplification and ADC (analog/digital converter) system was constructed for the Fermilab Experiment 705 electromagnetic calorimeter, which uses SCG1-C scintillating glass and SF5 lead glass instrumented with photomultiplier tubes. A general discussion of the system is given, and the charge amplification, fast-trigger-pulse generation, and analog/digital conversion aspects of the system are presented in more detail. Performance is evaluated using data from Experiment 705 and from offline tests. Short- and long-term pedestal stability, baseline recovery and rate capability, linearity of response, and crosstalk between channels are discussed. >

Abstract: The design and performance of a 4.2-radiation-length, lead-sandwich, gas tube hodoscope are discussed. The device, measuring 1*2 m/sup 2/ in area and 12 cm in depth, was used in Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory experiment 705. Multiple samplings of anode wires situated within three-walled aluminum tubes were used to generate an X coordinate; similarly, capacitively coupled copper-clad strips were ganged together to yield a Y coordinate. The results reviewed of an analysis of electron calibration data taken during a recent six-month running period are reviewed. The position resolution (in millimeters) is seen to be 0.8+3.3/ square root E+31/E for the 9.92 mm-spaced wires and 0.6+3.2/ square root E+32 for the 12.5-mm strips, where E represents the electron beam energy in GeV. The correlation between energy as measured by the wires and energy as measured by the strips is fairly tight, with an asymmetry RMS (root mean square) for 30-GeV electrons of about 4%. >

Abstract: Three multiwire proportional chambers (MWPCs) with high-rate capability have been constructed for Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory experiment 705 (charmonium and direct photon production by pi /sup +or-/,p and p at 300 GeV/c). Each chamber, with a sensitive area of 308 cm/sup 2/, consists of three anode planes, wound with 12.5- mu m-diameter gold-plated tungsten/rhenium wire, facing 25- mu m graphite-coated kapton cathode planes at a distance of 3 mm. Wire spacing is 0.75 mm in two of the MWPCs and 1.00 mm in the third one. After a few weeks of running on 'magic gas' with a beam flux of up to approximately 10/sup 7/ particles/cm/sup 2/ s, severe damage occurred to the graphite coating. All cathode planes were replaced by aluminized kapton, and the chambers worked successfully for the next three months until the end of the run, when a 10% efficiency drop was observed after a total accumulated charge of approximately 1 C/cm of sense wire. After the end of the run the chambers were disassembled and inspected. A white deposit with a characteristic wire pattern etched away from the Al coating was observed in the region of the beam spot. >

Abstract: A trigger processor for the selection of events in which photons of large transverse momentum are detected by a lead and scintillating glass calorimeter was designed, constructed, and operated at interaction rates ranging from 2 kHz to 2 MHz. The system achieved suppressions of the raw interaction rate of as much as 1*10/sup -5/. Raw distributions of transverse momenta and direct photon event sensitivities are presented for data taken with 300-GeV/c pion and proton beams on a lithium target. >

Abstract: Differential cross sections for p p elastic scattering have been measured for very small momentum transfers at six different incident antiproton momenta in the range 3.7 to 6.2 GeV/c by the detection of recoil protons at scattering angles close to 90°. Forward scattering parameters σ T , b , and ϱ have been determined. For the ϱ-parameter, up to an order of magnitude higher level of precision has been achieved compared to that in earlier experiments. It is found that existing dispersion theory predictions are in disagreement with our results for the ϱ-parameter.

Abstract: The cross section for the reaction {bar p}p{r_arrow}e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} has been measured at s=8.8, 10.8, 12.4, 13.1, and 14.4 GeV{sup 2} by Fermilab experiment E835. A non-magnetic spectrometer is used to identify the e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} final states generated by the antiproton beam intersecting an internal hydrogen gas jet target. From the analysis of the 144 observed events, new high-precision measurements of the proton magnetic form factor for timelike momentum transfers are obtained. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: The E705 scintillation glass/lead glass electromagnetic calorimeter is described. The trigger used for recording high transverse momentum direct photon signals from 300 GeV/c π−, π+, $\bar{p} $, p interactions in a Li7 target is explained. Preliminary results on the response of this direct photon trigger and electromagnetic calorimeter and expected event sensitivities are presented.

Abstract: We present measurements of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurement uses a data sample of 23x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BbarB decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we find events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a CP eigenstate containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the standard model is proportional to sin2beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result is sin2beta = 0.34+/-0.20 (stat)+/-0.05 (syst).
