Abstract: Abstract Indirect Drive Inertial Confinement Fusion Experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have achieved a burning plasma state with neutron yields exceeding 170 kJ, roughly 3 times the prior record and a necessary stage for igniting plasmas. The results are achieved despite multiple sources of degradations that lead to high variability in performance. Results shown here, for the first time, include an empirical correction factor for mode-2 asymmetry in the burning plasma regime in addition to previously determined corrections for radiative mix and mode-1. Analysis shows that including these three corrections alone accounts for the measured fusion performance variability in the two highest performing experimental campaigns on the NIF to within error. Here we quantify the performance sensitivity to mode-2 symmetry in the burning plasma regime and apply the results, in the form of an empirical correction to a 1D performance model. Furthermore, we find the sensitivity to mode-2 determined through a series of integrated 2D radiation hydrodynamic simulations to be consistent with the experimentally determined sensitivity only when including alpha-heating.

Abstract: Obtaining a burning plasma is a critical step towards self-sustaining fusion energy1. A burning plasma is one in which the fusion reactions themselves are the primary source of heating in the plasma, which is necessary to sustain and propagate the burn, enabling high energy gain. After decades of fusion research, here we achieve a burning-plasma state in the laboratory. These experiments were conducted at the US National Ignition Facility, a laser facility delivering up to 1.9 megajoules of energy in pulses with peak powers up to 500 terawatts. We use the lasers to generate X-rays in a radiation cavity to indirectly drive a fuel-containing capsule via the X-ray ablation pressure, which results in the implosion process compressing and heating the fuel via mechanical work. The burning-plasma state was created using a strategy to increase the spatial scale of the capsule2,3 through two different implosion concepts4–7. These experiments show fusion self-heating in excess of the mechanical work injected into the implosions, satisfying several burning-plasma metrics3,8. Additionally, we describe a subset of experiments that appear to have crossed the static self-heating boundary, where fusion heating surpasses the energy losses from radiation and conduction. These results provide an opportunity to study α-particle-dominated plasmas and burning-plasma physics in the laboratory.

Abstract: In a burning plasma state1–7, alpha particles from deuterium–tritium fusion reactions redeposit their energy and are the dominant source of heating. This state has recently been achieved at the US National Ignition Facility8 using indirect-drive inertial-confinement fusion. Our experiments use a laser-generated radiation-filled cavity (a hohlraum) to spherically implode capsules containing deuterium and tritium fuel in a central hot spot where the fusion reactions occur. We have developed more efficient hohlraums to implode larger fusion targets compared with previous experiments9,10. This delivered more energy to the hot spot, whereas other parameters were optimized to maintain the high pressures required for inertial-confinement fusion. We also report improvements in implosion symmetry control by moving energy between the laser beams11–16 and designing advanced hohlraum geometry17 that allows for these larger implosions to be driven at the present laser energy and power capability of the National Ignition Facility. These design changes resulted in fusion powers of 1.5 petawatts, greater than the input power of the laser, and 170 kJ of fusion energy18,19. Radiation hydrodynamics simulations20,21 show energy deposition by alpha particles as the dominant term in the hot-spot energy balance, indicative of a burning plasma state.

Abstract: Compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) targets are utilized at the National Ignition Facility Advanced Radiographic Capability (NIF-ARC) laser to enhance the acceleration of electrons and production of high energy photons, for laser durations of 10 ps and energies up to 2.4 kJ. A large enhancement of mean electron energy (>2 ×) and photon brightness (>10×) is found with CPC targets compared to flat targets. Using multiple diagnostic techniques at different spatial locations and scaling by gold activation spatial data, photon spectra are characterized for [Formula: see text] MeV. Beam width and pointing variations are given. The efficient production of MeV photons at [Formula: see text] W/cm2 with CPCs is observed, with doses of >10 rad in air at 1 m for [Formula: see text] MeV; these exceed those previously reported with laser-driven sources. Using this source, sub-mm resolution radiographs are generated through large areal density radiograph objects. These results are promising for the development of bright MeV x-ray and particle sources on Petawatt class laser systems.

Abstract: Cherenkov radiators deployed to measure the neutron time-of-flight spectrum have response times associated with the neutron transit across the detector and are free from long time response tails characteristic of scintillation detectors. The Cherenkov radiation results from simple physical processes which makes them amenable to high fidelity Monte Carlo simulation. Abstract: We report the first observation of diffractive $J/\psi(\to \mu^+\mu^-)$ production in $\bar pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.8 TeV. Diffractive events are identified by their rapidity gap signature. In a sample of events with two muons of transverse momentum $p_T^{\mu}>2$ GeV/$c$ within the pseudorapidity region $|\eta, Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, using RevTeX. Abstract: CMS will use silicon pixel as its innermost tracking device. Prototypes of these 150 μm square pixels bump bonded to DMILL readout chips were tested at CERN in a pion beam. A silicon telescope consisting of 8 planes of silicon strips was used to interpolate tracks to the position of the pixel detector. Data were taken with the beam at different angles of incidence relative to the pixel sensors. Position resolutions between 10 and 20 μm , depending on the hit position, were observed using charge sharing for the final configuration with unirradiated detectors. The observed resolution was as expected.

Abstract: We have measured the ratio of prompt production rates of the charmonium states {chi}{sub c1} and {chi}{sub c2} in 110 pb{sup -1} of p{ovr p} collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV. The photon from their decay into J/{psi}{gamma} is reconstructed through conversion into e{sup +}e{sup -} pairs. The energy resolution this technique provides makes the resolution of the two states possible. We find the ratio of production cross sections {sigma}{sub {chi}{sub c2}}/{sigma}{sub {chi}{sub c1}} = 0.96{+-}0.27(stat){+-}0.11(syst) for events with p{sub {tau}}(J/{psi})>4.0 GeV/c, |{eta}(J/{psi})| 1.0 GeV/c.

Abstract: We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions R equivalent to B(t --> Wb)/B(t --> Wq) from pa collisions at roots = 1.8 TeV. The data set corresponds to 109 pb(-1) of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1992-95 Tevatron run. We measure R = 0.94(-0.24)(+0.31)(stat + syst) or R > 0.61 (0.56) at 90% (95)% C.L., in agreement with the standard model predictions. This measurement yields a limit on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix element \V-tb\ under the assumption of three generations and unitarity.

Abstract: Several diodes with different multi-guard ring structures were fabricated from 10 kΩ cm p-type bulk material. Studies on the performance of such devices are presented here. They include the measurement of the leakage current, breakdown voltage and charge collection efficiency before and after 2×10 14 p/cm 2 irradiation with 63.3 MeV kinetic protons.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the W boson mass based on an integrated luminosity of 82 pb −1 from pp collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV recorded in 1994-1995 by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We identify W bosons by their decays to e∨ V and extract the mass by fitting the transverse mass spectrum from 28 323 W boson candidates. A sample of 3563 dielectron events, mostly due to Z→ee decays, constrains models of W boson production and the detector. We measure M W = 80.44±0.10(stat)±0.07(syst) GeV. By combining this measurement with our result form the 1992-1993 data set, we obtain M W = 80.43±0.11 GeV.

Abstract: We update the measurement of the t (t) over bar production cross section using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. This measurement uses t (t) over bar decays to the final states e + nu + jets and mu + nu + jets. We search for b quarks from t decays via secondary-vertex identification or the identification of semileptonic decays of the b and cascade c quarks. The background to the t (t) over bar production is determined primarily through a Monte Carlo simulation. However, we calibrate the simulation and evaluate its uncertainty using several independent data samples. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV/c(2), we measure sigma (t (t) over bar)-=5.1 +/- 1.5 pb and sigma (t (t) over bar)=9.2 +/- 4.3 pb using the secondary vertex and the lepton tagging algorithms, respectively. Finally, we combine these results with those from other t (t) over bar decay channels and obtain sigma (t (t) over bar)-= 6.5 (+1.7)(-1.4)pb.

Abstract: We have searched for first generation scalar leptoquark (LQ) pairs in the enu+jets channel using ppbar collider data (integrated luminosity= 115 pb^-1) collected by the DZero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-96. The analysis yields no candidate events. We combine the results with those from the ee+jets and nunu+jets channels to obtain 95% confidence level (CL) upper limits on the LQ pair production cross section as a function of mass and of beta, the branching fraction to a charged lepton. Comparing with the next-to-leading order theory, we set 95% CL lower limits on the LQ mass of 225, 204, and 79 GeV/c^2 for beta=1, 1/2, and 0, respectively.

Abstract: We have searched for the pair production of first generation scalar leptoquarks in the $\mathrm{eejj}$ channel using the full data set $(123{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1})$ collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992--1996. We observe no candidates with an expected background of approximately 0.4 events. Comparing the experimental 95% confidence level upper limit to theoretical calculations of the cross section with the assumption of a 100% branching fraction of $\mathrm{eq}$, we set a lower limit on the mass of a first generation scalar leptoquark of $225\mathrm{GeV}{/c}^{2}$. The results of this analysis rule out the interpretation of the excess of high ${Q}^{2}$ events at DESY HERA as leptoquarks which decay exclusively to $\mathrm{eq}$.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the ttbar production cross section in ppbar collisions at root(s) = 1.8TeV by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measurement is based on data from an integrated luminosity of approximately 125 pb^-1 accumulated during the 1992-1996 collider run. We observe 39 ttbar candidate events in the dilepton and lepton+jets decay channels with an expected background of 13.7+-2.2 events. For a top quark mass of 173.3GeV/c^2, we measure the ttbar production cross section to be 5.5+-1.8 pb.

Abstract: An amplitude analysis of the D+, Ds+ → π−π+π+ Dalitz plots is presented using data collected by the Fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687. The data are fitted to a model consisting of a sum of relativistic Breit-Wigner amplitudes for the intermediate two-body resonant decay modes plus a flat non-resonant contribution. From the fit we derive decay fractions and relative phases. We also present measurements of Γ(D + →π − π + π + ) Γ(D + →K − π + π + ) and Γ(D s + →π − π + π + ) Γ(D s + →K − K + π + ) .

Abstract: We have measured the $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ gauge boson coupling parameters using $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\gamma}+X$ ( $\ensuremath{\ell}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}e,\ensuremath{\mu}$) events at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8$ TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $92.8{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, were collected using the D\O{} detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measured cross section times branching ratio for $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}W\ensuremath{\gamma}+X$ with ${p}_{T}^{\ensuremath{\gamma}}g10$ GeV/c and ${R}_{\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\gamma}}g0.7$ is ${11.3}_{\ensuremath{-}1.5}^{+1.7}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5$ pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction. The 1 degree of freedom 95% confidence level limits on individual CP-conserving parameters are $\ensuremath{-}0.93l\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}l0.94$ and $\ensuremath{-}0.31l\ensuremath{\lambda}l0.29$. Similar limits are set on the CP-violating coupling parameters.

Abstract: Charged hadronic five-body decays of D + and D s + mesons have been studied in the E687 photoproduction experiment at Fermilab. We report the first compelling evidence of the decay mode D + , D s + → π − π − β + π + π + and the measurements of the decays D + → K − π − π + π + π + , D s + → K − K + π − π + π + and D s + → φπ − π + π + . An analysis of the D + → K − π − π + π + π + resonance structure is also presented.

Abstract: We report on the results of a search for fourteen flavor changing neutral current, lepton number violating, or lepton family number violating decays of the charmed meson D + in the large charm sample recorded by the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687. No evidence is seen for these rare and standard-model-forbidden decays, of the form D + → h ± l ∓ l + (with h = π , K and l = e , μ ); we determine 90% confidence level upper limits on their absolute branching fractions in the range (9–20) × 10 −5 .

Abstract: A search for new physics has been carried out in the channel pp→γγ+E T , as expected in various supersymmetric models. We require two photons with transverse energy E T γ >12GeV and pseudorapidity |η γ | T ) is consistent with background and no events have E T >25GeV. We set limits on production cross sections for selectron, sneutrino, and neutralino pairs, decaying into photons, which range from about 400 fb to 1 pb depending on the sparticle masses. A general limit of 185 fb (95% C.L.) is set on σ(pp→γγE T +X), where E T γ >12GeV, |η γ | T >25GeV.

Abstract: We report on the first statistically significant observation of the vector meson Cabibbo suppressed semileptonic decay D+ → ρ0μ+ν. We measure the branching ratio of the decay mode D+ → ρ0μ+ν (plus possible unobserved γ from D+ → η′μ+ν, η′ → γρ0) with respect to the decay mode D + → K ∗0 μ + ν to be BR (D + → ρ 0 μ + ν) BR (D + → K ∗0 μ + ν) = 0.079 ± 0.019 ( stat ) ± 0.013 ( syst ) . Data were collected by Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687.

Abstract: Results for the Cabibbo suppressed semileptonic decays D 0 → π − e + ν and D 0 → π − μ + ν (charge conjugates are implied) are reported by Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687. We find 45.4 ± 13.3 events in the electron mode and 45.6 ± 11.8 in the muon mode. The relative branching ratio BR (D 0 →π − l + v) BR (D 0 →K − l + v) for the combined sample is measured to be 0.101 ± 0.020 (stat.) ± 0.003 (syst.) 14 .

Abstract: We report measurements of charm particle production asymmetries from the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687. An asymmetry in the rate of production of charm versus anticharm particles is expected to arise primarily from fragmentation effects. We observe statistically significant asymmetries in the photoproduction of D+, D ∗+ and D0 mesons and find small (but statistically weak) asymmetries in the production of the Ds+ meson and the Λc+ baryon. Our inclusive photoproduction asymmetries are compared to predictions from nonperturbative models of charm quark fragmentation.

Abstract: We report on the study of charm baryons decaying to Λ c + : Λ c ★+ (2625) → Λ c + π + π − , Λ c ★+ (2593) → Λ c + π + π − , Σ c 0 → Λ c + π − and Σ c ++ → Λ c + π + . We present a confirmation of the state Λ c ∗+ (2593) and determine its mass difference to be M ( Λ c ★+ (2593)) − M ( Λ c + ) = 309.2 ± 0.7 ± 0.3 MeV/ c 2 . We determine the lower limit on the resonant branching ratio to be BR (Λ c ★+ (2593) → Σ c π ± Λ c ★+ (2593) → Λ c + π + π − ) > 0.51 (90% c.l.). We also measure the mass differences M ( Σ c 0 ) − M ( Λ c + ) = 166.6±0.5±0.6 MeV/ c 2 and M ( Σ c ++ ) − M ( Λ c + ) = 167.6±0.6±0.6 MeV/ c 2 . Finally, we measure the relative photoproduction cross sections for Λ c ★+ and Σ c with respect to the (inclusive) photoproduction cross section for Λ c + .

Abstract: Fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687 provides a high statistics sample of the decay mode D + → K ∗0 μ + ν (charge conjugates are implied). Our analysis yields a branching ratio of Γ (D + → K ∗0 μ + ν) Γ (D + → K − π + π + ) = 0.56±0.04±0.06 . The ratios of the form factors governing the decay are measured to be R ν = 1.74 ±0.27±0.28 and R 2 = 0.78±0.18±0.10, implying a polarization of Γ l Γ t = 1.20±0.13 ±0.13 for the electron decay. Finally, we report new limits on the decay modes D + → K − π + μ + ν (nonresonent) and D + → K ∗0 π 0 μ + ν .

Abstract: We report the results of a search for the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decays D+ → K+K−K+ and D+ → ΦK+, and the singly Cabibbo suppressed decays Ds+ → K+K−K+ and Ds+ → ΦK+. Our measurements are all consistent with zero branching ratio, and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the relative D+ branching ratios: BR(ΦK + ) BR(Φπ + ) , BR(K + K − K + ) BR(Φπ + ) and BR(K + K − K + ) BR(K − π + π + ) , and the relative Ds+ branching ratios: BR(ΦK + ) BR(Φπ + ) and BR(K + K − K + ) BR(Φπ + ) . The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687.

The D+ results are: Γ(D + → K + π − π + ) Γ(D + → K − π + π + ) = (7.2 ± 2.3 ± 1.7) × 10 −3 , Γ(D + → K ∗0 (892)π + ) Γ(D + → K − π + π + ) , and Γ(D + → K + ϱ 0 (770)) Γ(D + → K − π + π + ) . The Ds+ results are: Γ(D s + → K + π − π + ) Γ(D s + → Φ(1020)π + ) = 0.28 ± 0.06 ± 0.05 , Γ(D s + → K ∗0 (892)π + Γ(D s + → Φ(1020)π + ) = 0.18 ± 0.05 ± 0.04 , and Γ(D s + → K + ϱ 0 (770)) Γ(D s + → Φ(1020)π + ) .

Abstract: We present the first measurement of the lifetime of the Ω c 0 baryon. The data were collected in the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. The measured lifetime is τ = 86−20+27(stat.) ± 28(syst.) fr. Thus the Ω c 0 has one of the shorter lifetimes among the weakly decaying singly charmed baryons.

Abstract: Amplitude analyses of the D+ and Ds+ → K+K−π+ Dalitz plots are presented using data collected by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. Our data are fit to a model consisting of a sum of Breit-Wigner amplitudes for the intermediate two-body resonant decay modes. We extract decay fractions and relative phases. These results are used to infer new branching ratios for D+ → K+K−π+ inclusive as well as the Φπ+ and K ∗ (892) 0 K + channels.

We measure Γ(D + → K 0 K + ) Γ(D + → K 0 π + ) = 0.25 ± 0.04 ± 0.02 and Γ(D + → K 0 K ∗+ ) Γ(D + → K 0 π + ) = 1.1 ± 0.3 ± 0.4 .

The data were accumulated in the 1990–1991 fixed target running period of the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. Γ (D 0 → K 0 K 0 )/Γ (D 0 → K 0 π + π − is measured to be 0.039±0.013±0.013 and Γ (D 0 →K s 0 K s 0 K s 0 )/Γ (D 0 → K 0 π + π − ) is measured to be 0.035±0.012±0.006. We also measure Γ (D 0 → K 0 π + π − /Γ (D 0 → K − π + ) to be 1.61±0.10±0.15.

Abstract: We present evidence for the Ω c 0 in a new decay mode Ω c 0 → Σ + K − K − π + , for which we find 42.5 ± 8.8 events with a mass of 2699.9 ± 1.5 ± 2.5 MeV/c 2 . The data are from Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687.

Abstract: The new results on charm from E687 photoproduction experiment are presented. They follow from very high statistic measurents and cover a wide variety of physics items in the charm sector. Charm photoproduction studies, very accurate lifetime measurements, analysis of several semi-leptonic decays and hadronic decays are discussed. Particular attention has been devoted to compare E687 results with other experiments.

Abstract: We report the results of a search for [ital CP]-violating decay rate asymmetries ([ital A][sub [ital CP]]) in the charm decay modes [ital D][sup +][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][ital K][sup +][pi][sup +], [ital D][sup +][r arrow][ital [bar K]][sup *0][ital K][sup +], [ital D][sup +][r arrow][phi][pi][sup +], and [ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup +][ital K][sup [minus]]. Our measurements are all consistent with zero asymmetry: [ital A][sub [ital CP]]([ital KK][pi])=[minus]0.031[plus minus]0.068, [ital A][sub [ital CP]]([ital K][sup *][ital K])=[minus]0.12[plus minus]0.13, [ital A][sub [ital CP]]([phi][pi])=0.066[plus minus]0.086, and [ital A][sub [ital CP]]([ital KK])=0.024[plus minus]0.084. The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687.

Abstract: Measurements of the transverse momenta ([ital p][sub [ital T]]) of medium and heavy mass projectile fragments for a range of projectile nuclei ([sup 40]Ar, [sup 93]Nb, [sup 139]La, [sup 197]Au) have been carried out. It is found that the width of the transverse momentum distributions increases more rapidly with projectile and fragment mass than predicted by models based on nucleon momenta in the projectile nuclei. The distributions can be fit by including an additional transverse momentum, [ital p][sub [ital B]] (for Bounce). The extracted values of [ital p][sub [ital B]]/[ital A][sub [ital F]] increase with decreasing [ital A][sub [ital F]], and extrapolations to small [ital A][sub [ital F]] appear to be consistent with the mean values of reaction-plane-projected [ital p][sub [ital T]] per nucleon for light particle (e.g., nucleon) bounce-off.''

Abstract: Analysis of three D → Kππ Dalitz plots is presented using data collected by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. Our data are fit to a model consisting of a sum of Breit-Wigner amplitudes for the intermediate two-body resonant decay modes and a constant term for the nonresonant contribution. We extract branching fractions and relative phases and compare them to the results obtained in other experiments. Although this model qualitatively reproduces many features of our data, statistically significant discrepancies are observed in some of our fits.

Abstract: The fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687 provides a sample of approximately 90 events of the decay mode D+s→ φμ+ ν. The ratios of the form factors governing the decay are measured to be Rv=1.8±0.9±0.2 and R2= 1.1±0.8±0.1, implying a polarization of Г 1 /Г t = 1.0±0.5±0.1 for the electron decay, consistent with our measurement of the form factor for the decay D + → K ∗0 μ + ν .

Abstract: We report the first observation (103±17 events) of the decay Λ+c → Σ−π+π+ and the charge conjugate. A measurement of the relative branching ratio Г (Λ + c → Σ − π + π + )/Г (Λ + c → Σ + π + π + π − = 0.53±0.15 (stat) ± 0.07 (sys) is also presented.

Abstract: We report precise measurements of the D 0 and D + meson lifetimes by the E687 Collaboration at Fermilab. The measurements have been made using 16000 fully reconstructed decays of the D 0 into the K − π + and K − π + π − π + final states and 9000 decays of the D + into the K − π + π + final state. The lifetimes of the D 0 and D + mesons are measured to be 0.413±0.004±0.003 ps and 1.048±0.015±01011 ps respectively.

Abstract: An observation of an excited ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+\mathrm{*}}$ baryon decaying to ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, with ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{pK}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$, is presented. We reconstruct 39.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}8.7${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+\mathrm{*}}$ baryons with a mass of 340.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3 MeV/${\mathit{c}}^{2}$ above the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$ mass. The upper limit on the resonant branching ratio is B(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+\mathrm{*}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{\mathit{c}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$)/B(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+\mathrm{*}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$ ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$)36% at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the relative branching ratio of two Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes: D 0 → π − π + and D 0 → K − K + . The branching ratios of these modes relative to the Cabibbo-allowed decay D 0 → K − π + are also presented. The relative branching ratios are measured to be Γ ( D 0 → KK )/ Γ ( D 0 → ππ ) = 2.53 ± 0.46 ± 0.19, Γ ( D 0 → KK )/ Γ ( D 0 → Kπ ) = 0.109 ± 0.007 ± 0.009, and Γ ( D 0 → ππ )/ Γ ( D 0 → Kπ ) = 0.043 ± 0.007 ± 0.003.

48. Performance Improvements to the Neutron Imaging System at the National Ignition Facility

Abstract: A team headed by LANL and including many members from LLNL and NSTec LO and NSTec LAO fielded a neutron imaging system (NIS) at the National Ignition Facility at the start of 2011. The NIS consists of a pinhole array that is located 32.5 cm from the source and that creates an image of the source in a segmented scintillator 28 m from the source. The scintillator is viewed by two gated, optical imaging systems: one that is fiber coupled, and one that is lens coupled. While there are a number of other pieces to the system related to pinhole alignment, collimation, shielding and data acquisition, those pieces are discussed elsewhere and are not relevant here. The system is operational and has successfully obtained data on more that ten imaging shots. This remainder of this whitepaper is divided in five main sections. In Section II, we identify three critical areas of improvement that we believe should be pursued to improve the performance of the system for future experiments: spatial resolution, temporal response and signal-to-noise ratio. In Section III, we discuss technologies that could be used to improve these critical performance areas. In Section IV, we describe a path to evolve the current system to achieve improved performance with minimal impact on the ability of the system to operate on shots. In Section V, we discuss the abilities, scope and timescales of the current teams and the Commissariat energie atomique (CEA). In Section VI, we summarize and make specific recommendations for collaboration on improvements to the NIS.

Abstract: Summary form only given. We have installed the National Ignition Facility Neutron Imaging System. The imaging system provides information about the areal density of fuel in the various regions of the capsule implosion. A long line of sight enables imaging both the primary 14 MeV neutrons as well as the down-scattered neutrons with energies in the range of 9-12 MeV. The imager is a pinhole camera where the pinhole is located 325 mm from the target and the imaging plane is located 28 m from the target. The long absorption length of neutrons requires precise alignment of these extended imager components in order to have high detection efficiency and strong background rejection. The imaging plane is a 150 mm square scintillating fiber bundle 50 mm thick. The bundle consists of 250 μm square fibers. The fiber bundle is aligned such that the fibers point at the target. The pointing is accomplished using a retro reflection of a laser alignment device aligned to the imager line of sight. The 200 mm long pinhole is aligned to the imager line of sight using the Opposed Port Alignment System. The imager line of sight was registered to the alignment system to calculate the precise position of the pinhole. The ability of the positioning manipulator to both place and maintain the precise location of the pinhole, were monitored using the positioning imaging system as well as laser alignment device. Here we describe the various aspects of the imaging system alignment to enable the acquisition of neutron images as well as the estimated pointing errors of the first shot imaged.

Abstract: The fragmentation of 1.2 GeV per nucleon $^{139}\mathrm{La}$ nuclei has been studied. Total charge changing cross sections for H (${\mathrm{CH}}_{2}$-C), C, and Pb target nuclei, and elemental production cross sections for C and ${\mathrm{CH}}_{2}$ targets for 1\ensuremath{\le}\ensuremath{\Delta}Z\ensuremath{\le}30 have been measured. For heavy projectile fragments, the projected transverse momenta extracted are generally larger than predicted by models based on the internal momenta of nucleons in nuclei. Fits to the heavy fragment momentum distributions yield additional transverse momenta or ``bounce-off'' which range from \ensuremath{\simeq}500 to 1000 MeV/c.
