Abstract

This paper presents a complete description of Virgo, the French-Italian gravitational wave detector. The detector, built at Cascina, near Pisa (Italy), is a very large Michelson interferometer, with 3 km-long arms. In this paper, following a presentation of the physics requirements, leading to the specifications for the construction of the detector, a detailed description of all its different elements is given. These include civil engineering infrastructures, a huge ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber (about 6000 cubic metres), all of the optical components, including high quality mirrors and their seismic isolating suspensions, all of the electronics required to control the interferometer and for signal detection. The expected performances of these different elements are given, leading to an overall sensitivity curve as a function of the incoming gravitational wave frequency. This description represents the detector as built and used in the first data-taking runs. Improvements in different parts have been and continue to be performed, leading to better sensitivities. Abstract

New high-precision measurements of p( γ , π) and p( γ , γ) cross sections and beam asymmetries have been combined with other polarization ratios in a simultaneous analysis of both reactions. Compton scattering has provided two important new constraints on the photo-pion amplitude. Abstract

Compton scattering of laser light by an electron beam at large angles, in particular at 90°, produces coherent hard radiation if the density of the electron beam is high enough. In this case, the intensity of the scattered radiation is greatly enhanced in a small cone around the forward direction of propagation of the electron beam. As an example, the production of 1-KeV coherent X rays is discussed.

Abstract

The first measurement of exclusive photodisintegration of He-3 with polarized photons is reported. Cross sections and asymmetries for He-3(gamma over arrow pointing right, pn)p and He-3(gamma over arrow pointing right, pp)n at 235 less-than-or-equal-to E(gamma) less-than-or-equal-to 305 MeV are compared to a theoretical calculation which includes one-, two-, and three-nucleon photon absorption. Two-nucleon absorption dominates the pn data, but is suppressed in the pp data. The pp data require the inclusion of three-nucleon absorption to describe the cross section and beam asymmetry over all momenta.

Abstract

A feasibility study has been carried out for high-precision measurements of two-photon reactions leading to hadrons at the DAΦNE electron-positron collider. This new facility will operate at a c.m. energy of 1.02 GeV and up to a maximum of 1.5 GeV. It will have a luminosity ofL⋍5·1032 cm−2s−1, 100 times larger than the present available e+e− colliders. DAΦNE offers an excellent opportunity to study γγ reactions at low energy with high statistics, using the KLOE detector equipped with electron tagging facilities as described in this report. Among the various topics that one may address in these studies, we concentrate on the following: 1) Precision measurements of the polarizabilities of charged and neutral pions via the two-photon reactions γγ→ππ. These will allow tests of chiral theories and chiral perturbation techniques, as well as other theoretical approaches. 2) Measurements for the first time of the azimuthal correlations of the γγ→ππ and other two-photon reactions. These provide new tests of the validity of chiral and other theories. 3) Formation of theC=+1 light pseudoscalar mesons, π0, η and η′. This allows the study of the\(q\bar q\) and possibly gluonic inner structure of these mesons. For the π0 its measured radiative width will also improve the currently known lifetime. 4) The possibility to realize a double tagging at DAΦNE will allow reliable measurements of the currently little known total γγ→hadrons cross-section below 1 GeV, to be compared with several models. The physics program described abovecannot be realized without tagging the two-photon reactions to suppress the background from e+e− annihilation channels and other sources.

The first measurement of the reaction [sup 3]He([rvec [gamma]],[ital p])[ital X] using linearly polarized photons is reported. Cross sections and beam-polarization asymmetries for [theta][sub [ital p]][sup lab]=60[degree]--100[degree] and [ital E][sub [gamma]]=195--304 MeV are compared with a microscopic calculation which includes one-, two-, and three-nucleon absorption mechanisms. One- and two-nucleon absorption alone fails to describe the data at low proton momenta. The inclusion of three-nucleon absorption significantly improves the comparison with the measured cross sections. However, some features of the asymmetry distributions are not explained.

Results from three independent measurements of the {ital p}({rvec {gamma}},{pi}{sup 0}) reaction are presented for incident photon energies between 243 and 314 MeV, and for c.m. angles of 105{degree}, 122{degree}, and 150{degree}. The ratio of cross sections measured with orthogonal states of linear polarization is sensitive to the {ital E}2 excitation of the {Delta} resonace. Comparisons are made to the predictions of various models, all of which fail to reproduce these data.

Abstract

We use a single cavity in which the second harmonic is resonant to first double and then quadruple the IR input. The cavity is powered by a 15-W cw mode-locked Nd:YLF laser. We generate intermittent 263-nm average powers as high as 6.7 W for ηIR→UV = 45%. Absorption of 527-nm radiation in the β-barium borate crystal degrades the performance during continuous operation. The highest continuous average UV power produced is 2.9 W (simultaneously; 3.6 W of 527-nm light is output).

New precision angular distribution data for the D({gamma},{ital p}){ital n} reaction are presented for incident photon energies of 191 and 222 MeV. The difference of cross sections measured with orthogonal states of linear polarization is sensitive to the short-range behavior of the tensor interaction in models of the nuclear force. Comparisons with the Bonn and Paris potentials illustrate the sensitivity.

Abstract

The most general expression for the spin-averaged Compton amplitude of off-mass-shell photons is briefly discussed and the terms are individuated which, in the low-energy limit and forq 2 → 0, contribute to the electric (α) and magnetic (β) nucleon polarizabilities. These amplitudes are connected with the structure functions usually defined in the deep elastic scattering and, through dispersion relations, sum rules for the polarizabilities are deduced. The well-known forward sum rule forα +β is reobtained and, moreover, a sum rule forα, expressed in terms of the parameterR=σ L /σ T , is proposed. With the available SLAC determinations forR, this rule yields the valueα p ∼ 9.3 · 10−4 fm3, which is in substantial agreement with the valueα p=(12.4 ± 2.5) · 10−4 fm3 obtained with a fit of all the available experimental data. Similarly a backward sum rule forα −β is proposed, even though its numerical evaluation is strongly dependent on thet-channel contribution. Nevertheless, within the present experimental knowledge, this rule gives values compatible with the previous evaluations givingα p>β p.

Abstract

Coherent X rays can be produced by Compton scattering of laser light on a relativistic electron beam, whose current is periodically modulated by the same laser radiation in a suitable miniundulator. If electron and laser photon energy are properly matched, the modulated electron beam acts as a moving diffraction grating and the X rays show a high degree of coherence. A practical implementation of this scheme is shown.

Abstract

A new high-powered ultraviolet laser system is proposed. The system doubles the infrared light from a Nd-Yag laser mode-locked at 100 MHz, injects this light into a storage-ring cavity to accumulate a high power in the visible and then doubles this into the ultraviolet at 2600 A. The power levels anticipated at this wavelength are much larger than those of commercially available c.w. lasers. The new system can have a far-reaching impact in basic research and, even more so, in a great many industrial applications.

Abstract

A procedure is described for determining, for any point within the volume of a scintillating detector, the relative amount of light collected as the result of the deposition of a known amount of energy at that point. The response to muons traversing many well defined paths through the scintillator is combined with Fourier reconstruction techniques of computed tomography to produce three-dimensional images of the nonuniformities in light generation and collection. This information can be combined with a Monte Carlo simulation of energy deposition in electromagnetic showers to accurately predict the resolution for the detection of γ-rays of any energy. This has been applied to two large NaI(Tl) detectors and the calculated resolutions agree with measured spectra over the full range for which data are available, E γ = 6−45 MeV.

Abstract

The VIRGO experiment was approved in September 1993. The goal of the French-Italian collaboration is to detect gravitational waves using a 3 km arm-length Michelson interferometer. The construction of this detector, which will be installed in Pisa, is under way. The experiment is planned to take data, in a large bandwidth (10 Hz-10 kHz), at the beginning of the year 2000 with nominal sensitivity close to h = 3 X 10-‘3/&. The motivations, detection principle, main sources of noise and status of the experiment are presented.

Abstract

We report new high-precision measurements of $p(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},\ensuremath{\gamma}),$ $p(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0})$ and $p(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})$ cross section and beam asymmetry angular distributions for photon beam energies in the range from 213 MeV to 333 MeV. The cross sections for all three channels are locked together with a small common systematic scale uncertainty of 2%. A large overdetermination of kinematic parameters was used to achieve the first complete separation of the Compton scattering and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$-production channels. This has also allowed all detector efficiencies for the $p(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},\ensuremath{\gamma})$ and $p(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0})$ channels to be measured directly from the data itself without resorting to simulations. The new Compton results are approximately 30% higher than previous Bonn data near the peak of the $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ resonance, resolving a long-standing unitarity puzzle. However, our $p(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0})$ and $p(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})$ cross sections are also about 10% higher than both earlier Bonn data and recent Mainz measurements, while our $p(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})$ cross sections are in good agreement with results from Tokyo. Our polarization asymmetry data are of the highest precision yet available and have considerable impact upon multipole analyses. These new data have been combined with other polarization ratios in a simultaneous analysis of both Compton scattering and $\ensuremath{\pi}$ production, with Compton scattering providing two new constraints on the photopion amplitude. This analysis has improved the accuracy in the $E2/M1$ mixing ratio for the $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\Delta}$ transition, $EMR=\ensuremath{-}[3.07\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.26(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t}+\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.24(\mathrm{model})](%),$ and the corresponding $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\Delta}$ transverse helicity amplitudes, ${A}_{1/2}=\ensuremath{-}[135.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.3(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t}+\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3.7(\mathrm{model})]{(10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}{\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}1/2})$ and ${A}_{3/2}=\ensuremath{-}[266.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.6(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t}+\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}7.8(\mathrm{model})]{(10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}{\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}1/2}).$ From these we deduce an oblate spectroscopic deformation for the ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{+}.$ The same simultaneous analysis has been used to extract the proton dipole polarizabilities, $\overline{\ensuremath{\alpha}}\ensuremath{-}\overline{\ensuremath{\beta}}=+[10.39\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.77(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t}+\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}1.87}^{+1.02}(\mathrm{model})]{(10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}{\mathrm{fm}}^{3})$ in agreement with previous low energy measurements, and $\overline{\ensuremath{\alpha}}+\overline{\ensuremath{\beta}}=+[13.25\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.86(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t}+\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.58}^{+0.23}(\mathrm{model})]{(10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}{\mathrm{fm}}^{3})$ in agreement with recent evaluations of the Baldin sum rule. Our simultaneous analysis has also provided the first determination of the proton spin polarizabilities, ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}=\ensuremath{-}[27.23\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.27(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t}+\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}2.10}^{+2.24}(\mathrm{model})]{(10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}{\mathrm{fm}}^{4}),$ ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{0}=\ensuremath{-}[1.55$$\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t}+\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.03}^{+0.03}(\mathrm{model})]{(10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}{\mathrm{fm}}^{4}),$ ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{13}=+[3.94\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.53(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t}+\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.18}^{+0.20}(\mathrm{model})]{(10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}{\mathrm{fm}}^{4}),$ and ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{14}=\ensuremath{-}[2.20\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.27(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t}+\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.09}^{+0.05}(\mathrm{model})]{(10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}{\mathrm{fm}}^{4}).$ The extracted value of the backward spin polarizability, ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}},$ is considerably different from other analyses and this has been instrumental in bringing the value of $\overline{\ensuremath{\alpha}}\ensuremath{-}\overline{\ensuremath{\beta}}$ extracted from high energy data into agreement with low energy experiments.

Abstract

The photodisintegration of deuterium with linearly polarized light has been measured in the energy range of 110-315 MeV. The results of five independent measurements using three detector systems, two liquid target geometries, and two photon energy distribution end points are presented. These data are combined into one average data set with a systematic uncertainty of {+-}5%. The statistical precision of this combined data set, coupled with the sensitivity to the strength of the short range tensor interaction observed in the parallel-perpendicular cross section difference, makes this an attractive reaction for investigating aspects of the NN interaction. To do this reliably requires a complete, systematic description of the reaction through the {delta} region. Recent NN-N{delta} coupled-channel calculations which include fully retarded pion potentials are compared with multipole fits to the data. These calculations cannot reproduce the energy and angle dependence of the data. The character of the disagreement suggests that the remaining problems may lie with the treatment of the {delta}. The Baldin sum rule for the nucleon has been recalculated at the light of the most recent photoabsorption cross section measurements. The proton value (alpha + beta)_p =13.69 +/- 0.14 is smaller but consistent with the one usually quoted in literature. Abstract

The properties of the transition from the nucleon to the {Delta}(1232) serve as a benchmark for models of nucleon structure. To first order, N {r_arrow} {Delta} photo-excitation is dominated by a simple M1 quark spin-flip transition. At higher order, small L = 2 components in the N and {Delta} wavefunctions allow this excitation to proceed via an electric quadrupole transition. Since Nucleon models differ greatly on the mechanisms used to generate these L = 2 components,, the ratio of E2/M1 transitions (EMR) provides a sensitive test for structure models. Here, new high-precision measurements of p({rvec {gamma}}, {pi}) and p({rvec {gamma}}, {gamma}) cross sections and beam asymmetries have been combined with other polarization ratios in a simultaneous analysis of both reactions. Compton scattering has provided two important new constraints on the photo-pion amplitude. The E2/M1 mixing ratio for the N {r_arrow} {Delta} transition extracted from this analysis is EMR = {minus}3.0% {+-} 0.3 (stat+sys) {+-} 0.2 (model).

Abstract

Frozen‐spin HD polarized targets operating between 0.4 and 4K, used with cold‐transfer (4K) techniques, provide great configurational flexibility. Their long depolarization times under target usage conditions assure reasonable match between polarization production and usage times, for weakly ionizing beam fluxes, and the very long relaxation times at fields above 7T (∼1 yr.) provide an economical storage mode and ‘‘off‐the‐shelf’’ availability.

Abstract

The first measurement of exclusive photodisintegration of 3He with polarized photons is reported. Cross sections and asymmetries for 3He(γ,pn)p and 3He(γ,pp)n at 235≤Eγ≤305 MeV, and fixed proton emission angle θP1=100°, are compared to a theoretical calculation which includes one‐, two‐, and three‐nucleon photon absorption. Two‐nucleon absorption dominates the pn data, but is suppressed in the pp data. Both the pn and pp data require the inclusion of three‐nucleon absorption to describe the cross section and beam asymmetry over all momenta.

Abstract

In constituent quark models, a tensor interaction, mixing quark spins with their relative motion, is introduced to reproduce the observed baryon spectrum. This has a consequence completely analogous to the nuclear tensor force between the n and p in deuterium. A D state component is mixed into what would otherwise be a purely S-wave object. The D-wave component breaks spherical symmetry, resulting in a non-vanishing matrix element for the nucleon and a static quadrupole moment and deformation for its first excited state, the Δ resonance, at ∽325 MeV. The magnitude and sign of this D-state component are quite sensitive to the internal structure of the proton and have been of great interest in recent years [1].

Abstract

We discuss the pion polarizabilities α π , β π using a vector dominance model. We show that the vector-meson contribution accounts for almost 80% of the π 0 forward angle dispersion sum rule. By including the spin-2 resonance contribution and the recently reported calculation of the loop diagrams of order O( p 6 ), we find a very good agreement with the values of the sum rule obtained from the optical theorem, for both the π +- and π 0 .

Abstract

A feasibility study has been carried out for high precision measurements of two-photon reactions leading to hadrons at the DAPHNE electron-positron collider. This new facility will operate at a CM energy of 1.02 GeV and up to a maximum of 1.5 GeV. It will have a luminosity of L⋍5x10^32 cm^-2 s^-1, 100 times larger than the present available e^+e^- colliders. DAPHNE offers an excellent opportunity to study γγ reactions at low energy with high statistics, using the KLOE detector equipped with electron tagging facilities as described in this report. Among the various topics that one may address in these studies, we concentrate on the following: (1) Precision measurements of the polarizabilities of charged and neutral pions via the two-photon reactions γγ->ππ. These will allow tests of chiral theories and chiral perturbation techniques, as well as other theoretical approaches. (2) Measurements for the first time of the azimuthal correlations of the γγ->ππ and other two-photon reactions. This provides new tests of the validity of chiral and other theories. (3) Formation of the C = +1 light pseudoscalar mesons, π^0, η and η'. This allows the study of the qq ̅ and possibly gg inner structure of these mesons. For the π^0 its measured radiative width will also improve the currently known life-time. (4) The possibility to realize a double tagging at DAPHNE will allow reliable measurements of the total γγ-> hadrons cross section below 1 GeV, which currently is vaguely known to be compared with several models. The physics program described above cannot be realized without tagging the two-photon reactions to suppress the background from e^+e^- annihilation channels and other sources.

We describe an external resonant ring that contains two nonlinear crystals. The crystals double and then quadruple the frequency of the input radiation. The ring is driven by a commercial 15 W cw mode-locked 1.053 pm Nd:YLF laser. We generated UV output powers of 6.7 W and 2.9 W in low-duty-cycle and continuously phase-locked operation, respectively.

Abstract

The Laser Electron Gamma Source (LEGS)[1] has recently begun operations at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) of Brookhaven National Laboratory. At LEGS, laser light is Compton backscattered from the 2.5 GeV electrons circulating in the X-Ray storage ring of the NSLS. The backscattered photons have gamma ray energies, k < 320 MeV. The corresponding scattered electrons are detected in a tagging spectrometer which is incorporated into the storage ring. This tag provides a determination of the photon energy to ~ 5 MeV [2]. Since the laser light is polarized, and since the spin-flip amplitude in Compton backscattering is very small, the resulting polarization of the gamma-ray beam is very high.

Abstract

A magnetic spectrometer is described for tagging a gamma-ray beam produced by Compton backscattering laser light from the electron beam circulating in a storage ring. The spectrometer, as it is now installed, has a design energy resolution of 5.5 MeV, a dispersion of 2.8 MeV/cm, and a dynamic range of 160 MeV. The energy resolution is limited by the energy spread of the stored beam. If dispersion can be introduced into the laser-electron interaction straight section of the storage ring, the resolution can be improved to be as small as 1.5 MeV, depending on the value of this dispersion. Measured properties of the spectrometer are in substantial agreement with the design values.

Abstract

Threshold π+ electroproduction has been measured at momentum transfers ‖k2‖ of 0.45, 0.58 and 0.88 (GeV/c)2, extending the range of earlier measurements. Using PCAC and current algebra-based models we have deduced the axial vector form factor of the nucleon GA(k2), and find that the dipole parametrisation is favoured over the monopole. The value of MA in the dipole parametrisation is, in a weak PCAC model, 0.96 ± 0.03 GeV, in excellent agreement with neutrino measurements. The threshold cross section is also in excellent agreement with the predictions of a fixed-t dispersion relation model.

Abstract

We have measured at − k 2 = 0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 and W = 2.3 GeV the inclusive electroproduction cross sections for final-state neutrons and protons from a deuterium target. By comparison with previous data from a proton target, we present cross sections for inclusive nucleon production from neutrons which show great similarity to those from protons. There is evidence that ϱ 0 production is present with essentially the same strength as with a proton target.
