Three known compounds were isolated from Virgaria nigra CF-231658; 2,7-dihydroxy naphthalene (1), virgaricin B (2) and virgaricin (3). The isolated compounds was obtained from liquid-state and agar-supported fermentation using Amberlite XAD-16 solid-phase extraction during the cultivation step. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR as well as HRMS spectroscopic analyses. The isolated compounds were examined for their ability to inhibit elastase using normal human diploid fibroblasts. Compound 2 displayed the most potent activity with 76.7 ± 2.12% inhibition of the enzyme activity at 5 μM concentration.

Solid-phase extraction embedded dialysis (SPEED technology) is an innovative procedure developed to physically separate in-situ, during the cultivation, the mycelium of filament forming microorganisms, such as actinomycetes and fungi, and the XAD-16 resin used to trap the secreted specialized metabolites. SPEED consists of an external nylon cloth and an internal dialysis tube containing the XAD resin. The dialysis barrier selects the molecular weight of the trapped compounds, and prevents the aggregation of biomass or macromolecules on the XAD beads. The external nylon promotes the formation of a microbial biofilm, making SPEED a biofilm supported cultivation process. SPEED technology was applied to the marine Streptomyces albidoflavus 19-S21, isolated from a core of a submerged Kopara sampled at 20 m from the border of a saltwater pond. The chemical space of this strain was investigated effectively using a dereplication strategy based on molecular networking and in-depth chemical analysis. The results highlight the impact of culture support on the molecular profile of Streptomyces albidoflavus 19-S21 secondary metabolites.

The strain Aspergillus chevalieri TM2-S6 was isolated from the sponge Axinella and identified according to internal transcribed spacer (ITS) molecular sequence homology with Aspergillus species from the section Restricti. The strain was cultivated 9 days on potato dextrose broth (PDB), and the medium evaluated as antioxidant on primary normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF). The cultivation broth was submitted to sterile filtration, lyophilized and used without any further processing to give the Aspergillus chevalieri TM2-S6 cultivation broth ingredient named ACBB. ACCB contains two main compounds: tetrahydroauroglaucin and flavoglaucin. Under oxidative stress, ACCB showed a significant promotion of cell viability. To elucidate the mechanism of action, the impact on a panel of hundreds of genes involved in fibroblast physiology was evaluated. Thus, ACCB stimulates cell proliferation (VEGFA, TGFB3), antioxidant response (GPX1, SOD1, NRF2), and extracellular matrix organization (COL1A1, COL3A1, CD44, MMP14). ACCD also reduced aging (SIRT1, SIRT2, FOXO3). These findings indicate that Aspergillus chevalieri TM2-S6 cultivation broth exhibits significant in vitro skin protection of human fibroblasts under oxidative stress, making it a potential cosmetic ingredient.

International audience; Colletotrichum higginsianum is the causal agent of crucifer anthracnose disease, responsible for important economic losses in Brassica crops. A mutant lacking the CclA subunit of the COMPASS complex was expected to undergo chromatin decondensation and the activation of cryptic secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters. Liquid-state fermentation of the Δ cclA mutant coupled with in situ solid-phase extraction led to the production of three families of compounds, namely, colletorin and colletochlorin derivatives with two new representatives, colletorin D (1) and colletorin D acid (2), the diterpenoid α-pyrone higginsianin family with two new analogues, higginsianin C (3) and 13- epi-higginsianin C (4), and sclerosporide (5) coupling a sclerosporin moiety with dimethoxy inositol.

We report the 28-Mbp draft genome sequence of the marine fungus Cladosporium sp. strain TM138. The species was isolated from the marine invertebrate Didemnum maculosum. Its genome sequence will inform future investigations into the species’ enzymatic potential for bioremediation and its evolution in marine environments.

The bioconversion of Withania somnifera extract by the fungus Beauveria bassiana leads to cysteine and glutathione derivatives of withaferin A at the C-6 position. The compounds were purified and fully characterized by 1D-NMR, 2D-NMR, and HRMS analysis. The glutathione derivative CR-777 was evaluated as a neuroprotective agent from damage caused by different neurotoxins mimicking molecular symptoms in Parkinson&acute, s disease (PD), including 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+), 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), and &alpha, synuclein (&alpha, Syn). CR-777, at nanomolar concentrations, protected dopaminergic and cortical neurons. In 6-OHDA-treated neurons, CR-777 increased cell survival and neurite network and decreased the expression of &alpha, Syn. Using specific inhibitors of cell toxicity signaling pathways and specific staining experiments, the observed role of CR-777 seemed to involve the PI3K/mTOR pathway. CR-777 could be considered as a protective agent against a large panel of neuronal stressors and was engaged in further therapeutic development steps.

International audience; The role of histone 3 lysine 4 (H3K4) methylation is poorly understood in plant pathogenic fungi. Here, we analysed the function of CclA, a subunit of the COMPASS complex mediating H3K4 methylation, in the brassica anthracnose pathogen Colletotrichum higginsianum. We show that CclA is required for full genome-wide H3K4 trimethylation. The deletion of cclA strongly reduced mycelial growth, asexual sporulation and spore germination but did not impair the morphogenesis of specialized infection structures (appressoria and biotrophic hyphae). Virulence of the Delta cclA mutant on plants was strongly attenuated, associated with a marked reduction in appressorial penetration ability on both plants and inert cellophane membranes. The secondary metabolite profile of the Delta cclA mutant was greatly enriched compared to that of the wild type, with three different families of terpenoid compounds being overproduced by the mutant, namely the colletochlorins, higginsianins and sclerosporide. These included five novel molecules that were produced exclusively by the Delta cclA mutant: colletorin D, colletorin D acid, higginsianin C, 13-epi-higginsianin C and sclerosporide. Taken together, our findings indicate that H3K4 trimethylation plays a critical role in regulating fungal growth, development, pathogenicity and secondary metabolism in C. higginsianum.

BACKGROUND Discontinuing fingolimod (FTY) in older patients is a growing concern with little evidence supporting the decision to pursue treatment and reasonable doubt for disease reactivation after withdrawal. OBJECTIVE To estimate the incidence of recurrence of disease activity (RDA) and rebound after FTY withdrawal in patients older than 50 years. METHODS Retrospective analysis of all MS patients in our clinic who discontinued FTY after at least 6 months of treatment, according to disease activity on FTY and age at discontinuation. RDA was defined as the occurrence of either clinical and/or MRI activity in the 6 months after FTY withdrawal and rebound when the levels of disease activity surpassed pretreatment activity. RESULTS From the 128 patients who discontinued FTY since 2011, up to 35.2% of patients experienced evidence of disease activity and 12.5% had a rebound. The incidence of both RDA and rebound was not different among individuals who had persistent disease activity on FTY to those who stopped FTY for other reasons than inefficacy (RDA: 25.5% vs 20.5%, p = 0.353 rebound: 14.5% vs 11%, p = 0.596). Negative predictive factors for RDA were younger age at disease onset (p = 0.036), highly active disease at baseline (p = 0.003) and previous treatment with NTZ (p = 0.013). Older age at FTY discontinuation did not reduce the risk of RDA in patients previously stable on treatment (OR 0.972, 95% CI 0.871-1.085, p = 0.613), although the incidence of RDA/rebound was half less in the older patients (36.5% in the

The first total synthesis of (±)-EA-2801, a naturally occurring 4-hydroxycyclopent-2-en-1-one acrylate produced by the fungus Trichoderma atroviridae UB-LMA , was achieved The synthesis started from furfuryl alcohol, manufactured industrially from furfural, produced from waste biomass such as corncobs or sugar cane bagasse. (±)-EA-2801 was synthesized in 5 steps and 71% overall yield starting from 4-hydroxycyclopent-2-en-1-one. Enantio-pure ( R )- and ( S )-EA-2801 were obtained from racemic mixture by preparative chiral supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC).

Nowadays, there is a huge interest in natural products obtained from marine organisms that can promote human health.The aim of the present study is to evaluate for the first time, the in vitro effects of marine Aspergillus puulaauensis TM124-S4 extract against oxidative stress in human fibroblasts, and its potential as a cosmetic ingredient. The strain was isolated from the Mediterranean Sea star, Echinaster sepositus, and identified according to ITS molecular sequence homology as a member of Aspergillus section versicolores.To gain insight on the bioactivity underpinning the effects of TM124-S4 extract on oxidative stress, we examined a panel of a hundred genes as well as cell viability. Initially, Aspergillus puulaauensis TM124-S4 promoted cell viability.The change in gene transcripts revealed that Aspergillus puulaauensis TM124-S4 extracts exhibited skin protection properties by mediating cell proliferation (EPS8, GDF15, CASP7, VEGFA), antioxidant response (CAT, SOD1, TXN, GPX1), skin hydration (CD44, CRABP2, SERPINE) and DNA repair (PCNA, P21). The extract also modulated the expression of genes involved in skin pigmentation and aging (TYR, FOXO3).These findings indicate that Aspergillus puulaauensis TM124-S4 extract possesses significant in-vitro skin protection activity against induced oxidative stress.Furthermore, new insights are provided into the beneficial role of fungal bioactive compounds in skin related research.

Isolation of marine compounds from living invertebrates represents a major challenge for sustainable and environmentally friendly exploitation of marine bio-resources. To develop innovative technology to trap invertebrate compounds in the open sea, the proof of concept of a system combining external continuous circulation of water with XAD-amberlite solid-phase extraction was validated in an aquarium. In this work, we reported the elicitation of guanidine alkaloid production of Crambe crambe in the presence of Anemonia sulcata, both collected from the Mediterranean Sea. Besides the previously reported crambescidin 359 (1), and crambescidin acid (2), three new compounds were isolated; one carboxylated analog of 1 named crambescidin 401 (3), and two analogs of crambescin B, crambescin B 281 (4) and crambescin B 253 (5). Based on these results, a technology named Somartex® for “Self Operating MARine Trapping Extractor” was patented and built to transfer the concept from closed aquarium systems to open marine ecosystems.

The endophytic Trichoderma atroviridae UB-LMA was isolated as a symbiont of Taxus baccata and analyzed for its antimicrobial activity. By applying an original approach consisting of solid-state cultivation coupled with solid-phase extraction, a new methyl (R,E)-3-(1-hydroxy-4-oxocyclopent-2-en-1-yl)-acrylate derivative named EA-2801 (1) was isolated together with the previously reported isonitrin A and dermadin methyl ester. The chemical structure of 1 was determined by NMR and MS. Compound 1 showed antimicrobial activity against a panel of Gram-positive and -negative bacteria.

International audience; The pyrrolamides constitute a small family of secondary metabolites that are known for their ability to bind noncovalently to the DNA minor groove with some sequence specificity. To date, only a single pyrrolamide biosynthetic gene cluster has been reported, directing the synthesis of congocidine (netropsin) in Streptomyces ambofaciens. In this study, we improve our understanding of pyrrolamide biosynthesis through the identification and characterization of the gene cluster responsible for the production of distamycin in Streptomyces netropsis DSM40846. We discover that the strain produces two other pyrrolamides, the well-characterized congocidine and a congocidine/distamycin hybrid that we named disgocidine. S. netropsis DSM40846 genome analysis led to the identification of two distinct pyrrolamide-like biosynthetic gene clusters. We show here that these two clusters are reciprocally dependent for the production of the three pyrrolamide molecules. Furthermore, based on detailed functional analysis of these clusters, we propose a biosynthetic route to congocidine and distamycin and an updated model for pyrrolamide assembly. The synthesis of disgocidine, the distamycin/congocidine hybrid, appears to constitute the first example of "natural combinatorial biosynthesis" between two related biosynthetic pathways. Finally, we analyze the genomic context of the two biosynthetic gene clusters and suggest that the presently interdependent clusters result from the coevolution of two ancestral independent pyrrolamide gene clusters.

International audience; Hydrazine, hydrazone and hydrazide derivatives are nitrogen-nitrogen bond containing compounds. Such molecules are relatively scarce in nature and have been isolated from plants, marine organisms and microorganisms. These compounds exhibit remarkable structural diversity and relevant biological activities. The enzymes involved in the formation of the N-N bond are still unknown, but many lines of evidence support the involvement of N-nitrosation and N-hydroxylation activating steps. Beside the challenging N-N bond, N-acylases catalyzing the C-N bond formation contribute to the chemical diversity of N-N-containing natural products (N2NP). This review examines the state of knowledge regarding the biosynthesis of N2NP, for which only two biosynthetic gene clusters have been investigated. Biological properties and chemical synthesis of hydrazines, hydrazones and hydrazides are also reported.

WOS:000414234400035; International audience; Two sporothriolide-related compounds were obtained from an extract of the fungus Hypoxylon monticulosum CLL-205, isolated from a Sphaerocladina sponge collected from the Tahiti coast. Compound 2 is a deoxy analogue of sporothric acid (4). Compound 3 is a newly reported unusual scaffold combining sporothriolide (1) and trienylfuranol A (5) moieties, through a Diels-Alderase-type reaction. Various experimental and analytical arguments supported the biocatalytic origin of compound 3. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated using 1D and 2D NMR, HRMS, and IR data. The structure and the absolute configuration of 3 were unambiguously confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

International audience; Two novel α,β-unsaturated γ-lactono-hydrazides, geralcin A (2) and geralcin B (3), were isolated from Streptomyces sp. LMA-545. This unusual scaffold consists of the condensation of alkyl-hydrazide with an α,β-unsaturated γ-lactone, 3-(5-oxo-2H-furan-4-yl)propanoic acid (1), which was isolated from the same broth culture. Amberlite XAD-16 solid-phase extraction was used during the cultivation step, and the trapped compounds (1-3) were eluted from the resin with methanol. The structures were elucidated using (1)H, (13)C, and (15)N NMR spectroscopic analysis and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Geralcin B (3) was cytotoxic against MDA231 breast cancer cells with an IC(50) of 5 μM.

The first total synthesis of geralcin A (2), a naturally occurring α,β-unsaturated γ-lactonohydrazide produced by Streptomyces sp. LMA-545, was achieved according to the hypothetical biosynthesis we have previously published. MH-031 (1), the plausible natural precursor isolated together with geralcin A, was synthesized in 6 steps and in a 25% overall yield. Condensation of glycolic acid with key intermediate Boc-hexylhydrazine afforded the desired geralcin A in 46% overall yield. Spectroscopic data of the synthetic compound were identical to those recorded for the natural one.

International audience; Agar-supported fermentation (Ag-SF), a variant of solid-state fermentation, has recently been improved by the development of a dedicated 2 m(2) scale pilot facility, Platotex. We investigated the application of solid-phase extraction (SPE) to Ag-SF in order to increase yields and minimize the contamination of the extracts with agar constituents. The selection of the appropriate resin was conducted on liquid-state fermentation and Diaion HP-20 exhibited the highest recovery yield and selectivity for the metabolites of the model fungal strains Phomopsis sp. and Fusarium sp. SPE applied to Ag-SF resulted in a particular compartmentalization of the culture. The mycelium that requires oxygen to grow migrates to the top layer and formed a thick biofilm. The resin beads intercalate between the agar surface and the mycelium layer, and trap directly the compounds secreted by the mycelium through a "solid-solid extraction" (SSE) process. The resin/mycelium layer is easily recovered by scraping the surface and the target metabolites extracted by methanol. Ag-SF associated to SSE represents an ideal compromise for the production of bioactive secondary metabolites with limited economic and environmental impact.

Objective To investigate the impact of corticosteroids (CS) on the viral-specific T-cell response, in particular the JC virus (JCV)-specific one, in an attempt to determine the optimal timing of CS in the management of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy-immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (PML-IRIS). Methods A blood draw was performed before and 7 days after the administration of IV CS to 24 patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS). The phenotypic pattern of T cells was determined by CCR7 and CD45RA. To assess the impact of CS treatment on proliferative response of JCV-, influenza-, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-specific T cells, a thymidine incorporation proliferation assay was performed. An intracellular cytokine staining assay was performed to determine the effect of CS treatment on the production of cytokine by virus-specific T cells. JCV T-cell assays were performed only in JCV-infected patients with MS as detected by serologies (Stratify) or detection of JCV DNA in the urine by PCR. Results CS led T cells, CD4+ and CD8+, toward a less differentiated phenotype. There was a significant decrease of EBV-, influenza-, and JCV-specific T-cell proliferative response upon CS treatment. There was a significant decrease in the frequency of interferon (IFN) γ- and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) α-producing JCV-specific CD8+ T cells, but not EBV- or influenza-specific CD4+ or CD8+ T cells. Conclusions CS have a profound impact on the virus-specific T-cell response, especially on JCV, suggesting that when CS are considered, they should not be given before the onset of clinical or radiologic signs of IRIS. Studies addressing directly patients with MS with natalizumab-caused PML are warranted. Classification of evidence This study provides Class III evidence that methylprednisolone treatment decreases the frequency of JCV-specific CD8+ T cells producing IFN-γ and TNFα, impairing control of JCV, suggesting this should be used to treat but not to prevent PML-IRIS. No clinical outcomes were measured.

International audience; Eight polyketide compounds were isolated from the cultivation broth of Phomopsis sp. CMU-LMA. We have recently described LMA-P1, a bicyclic 10-membered macrolide, obtained as a bioconversion derivative of Sch-642305, the major compound isolated in this study. Benquinol is the ethyl ester derivative of the 13-dihydroxytetradeca-2,4,8-trienoic acid produced by Valsa ambiens. This compound is concomitantly produced with the 6,13-dihydroxytetradeca-2,4,8-trienoic acid (DHTTA) previously isolated from Mycosphaerellarubella. The absolute configuration of the new compound, (2R,3R,4S,5R)-3-hydroxy-2,4-dimethyl-5-[(S,Z)-3-methylpentenyl]-tetrahydro-pyranone LMA-P2 was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The δ-lactone 2,3-dihydroxytetradecan-5-olide (DHTO) was previously isolated from Seiridium unicorne. This compound may form through the cyclization of the methyl-2,3,5-trihydroxytridecanoate LMA-P3, a new linear polyketide isolated in this study. Benquoine, a new 14-membered lactone generated from the cyclization of benquinol, is proposed as the key precursor for the biosynthesis of Sch-642305. Antimicrobial activity and cancer cell viability inhibition by the new compounds were investigated. Benquoine exhibits antimicrobial activity against Gram positive bacteria, and cytotoxicity against HCT-116 cancer cell line.

The reason why EBV-specific cellular immune responses are abnormal in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients is still missing. In this exploratory pilot study, we assessed IL-1beta, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, IFN-gamma, TGF-beta1 and FOXP3 mRNA expression in EBV-stimulated highly differentiated T cells (T(HD)) of MS patients and healthy controls (HC). We found increased levels of IFN-gamma and IL-4 mRNA in CD8+ T(HD) cells of MS patients. All the other tested molecules were expressed similarly in MS patients and HC. Interestingly, increased IFN-gamma and IL-4 suggest that the control of EBV replication may be insufficient in MS patients.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been associated with multiple sclerosis (MS), however, most studies examining the relationship between the virus and the disease have been based on serologies, and if EBV is linked to MS, CD8+ T cells are likely to be involved as they are important both in MS pathogenesis and in controlling viruses. We hypothesized that valuable information on the link between MS and EBV would be ascertained from the study of frequency and activation levels of EBV-specific CD8+ T cells in different categories of MS patients and control subjects. We investigated EBV-specific cellular immune responses using proliferation and enzyme linked immunospot assays, and humoral immune responses by analysis of anti-EBV antibodies, in a cohort of 164 subjects, including 108 patients with different stages of MS, 35 with other neurological diseases and 21 healthy control subjects. Additionally, the cohort were all tested against cytomegalovirus (CMV), another neurotropic herpes virus not convincingly associated with MS, nor thought to be deleterious to the disease. We corrected all data for age using linear regression analysis over the total cohorts of EBV- and CMV-infected subjects. In the whole cohort, the rate of EBV and CMV infections were 99% and 51%, respectively. The frequency of IFN-gamma secreting EBV-specific CD8+ T cells in patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) was significantly higher than that found in patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RR-MS), secondary-progressive MS, primary-progressive MS, patients with other neurological diseases and healthy controls. The shorter the interval between MS onset and our assays, the more intense was the EBV-specific CD8+ T-cell response. Confirming the above results, we found that EBV-specific CD8+ T-cell responses decreased in 12/13 patients with CIS followed prospectively for 1.0 +/- 0.2 years. In contrast, there was no difference between categories for EBV-specific CD4+ T cell, or for CMV-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell responses. Anti-EBV-encoded nuclear antigen-1 (EBNA-1)-specific antibodies correlated with EBV-specific CD8+ T cells in patients with CIS and RR-MS. However, whereas EBV-specific CD8+ T cells were increased the most in early MS, EBNA-1-specific antibodies were increased in early as well as in progressive forms of MS. Our data show high levels of CD8+ T-cell activation against EBV--but not CMV--early in the course of MS, which support the hypothesis that EBV might be associated with the onset of this disease.

CD8+ T cells may play an important role in multiple sclerosis (MS). Whether these cells would be involved in early stages of MS is unclear. We enrolled 52 patients with suspected MS, determined the recruitment of their highly differentiated (CCR7-/CD45RA+ or -) T cells (T(HD)) in the CSF as compared to peripheral blood and followed them for 12+/-7.3 months. A ROC curve showed that a CD8+/CD4+ T(HD) cells ratio of 0.94 helped to distinguish relapsing-remitting (RR-MS) and possible MS (Po-MS) from primary-progressive MS (PP-MS) and other neurological diseases patients (OND) patients (p=0.039), risk ratio of 2.29 (95% CI: 1.13-4.66; p=0.006). The CSF enrichment in CD8+ T(HD) cells was greater than in CD4+ T(HD) cells in RR/Po-MS patients (p=0.024) and than in CD8+ T(HD) cells in PP-MS/OND patients (p=0.006). These data suggest that CD8+ T(HD) cells play a role in the early stages of RR-MS.

International audience; Ageing is commonly defined as the accumulation of diverse deleterious changes occurring in cells andtissues with advancing age that are responsible for the increased risk of pathologies such as Alzheimer’sdisease, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration or cancers. As the population of developed countriesis ageing, the prevalence of a variety of age-related diseases is increasing. In order to counteract thismajor healthcare challenge, marine natural products represent an extraordinary reservoir of structurallydiverse bioactive metabolites which may present anti-ageing properties and offer pharmaceutical, cosme-ceutical or nutraceutical applications. Taking into consideration the aforementioned issues, the H2020European project TASCMAR explores marine invertebrates and symbionts from under-investigatedmarine biodiversity hotspots and develops innovative approaches for the discovery and production ofcompounds with anti-ageing activity. The Chemistry Laboratory of Natural Substances and FoodSciences (LCSNSA, University of La R ́eunion) located at R ́eunion island is involved in this ambitiousresearch program and this communication will therefore provide an outline of its contribution to TASC-MAR. We collected a total of 112 sponges from Mayotte and Rodrigues (Indian Ocean). The crudeextracts of the samples were submitted to a biological evaluation against a wide range of differenttargets involved in ageing or age-related diseases. These targets include catalase, sirtuin 1, CDK7,proteasome, Fyn kinase, tyrosinase and elastase. Twenty nine crude extracts have shown promisingresults. The chemical investigation of these 29 extracts for the discovery of molecules with anti-ageingeffects will be discussed.

The fungi Chrysosporium lobatum TM-237-S5 was isolated from the sponge Acanthella cavernosa, collected from the mesophotic coral ecosystem of the Red Sea. The strain was cultivated on a potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium, coupling solid-state fermentation and solid-state extraction (SSF/SSE) with a neutral macroreticular polymeric adsorbent XAD Amberlite resin (AMBERLITE XAD1600N). The SSF/SSE lead to high chemodiversity and productivity compared to classical submerged cultivation. Ten phenalenone related compounds were isolated and fully characterized by one-dimensional and two-dimensional NMR and HRMS. Among them, four were found to be new compounds corresponding to isoconiolactone, (-)-peniciphenalenin F, (+)-8-hydroxyscleroderodin, and (+)-8-hydroxysclerodin. It is concluded that SSF/SSE is a powerful strategy, opening a new era for the exploitation of microbial secondary metabolites.
