Abstract

A study on the use of monovalent cation (MVC) activation/inhibition by enzymes to modulate catalysis and regulation investigated the mechanisms of MVC action on stage I of the tryptophan synthase beta-reaction. It will be shown that the MVC effect acts to selectively alter both the ground-state abilities of intermediates along the pathway and the activation energies of chemical steps in catalysis. Experimental methodology and results are discussed.
