Abstract

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of lithium vanadate single crystals reveals that the crystals have intrinsic oxygen ions and carbonate ions associated with the impurities in the crystal. The presence of the ions and impurities are revealed by the two peaks in the EPR spectra. The ions and impurities are associated with the trapped hole centers at 77 K.

Abstract

With construction of a thermochemical energy conversion prototype system to store solar heat, thermal dissociation of pellets of Ca[(OH).sub.2] and hydration of CaO have been investigated in some detail for its application to the system. The inorganic substance is very attractive as a material for long term heat storage, but molar density changes associated with the reaction are fairly large. Therefore, this factor has been taken into account in the kinetic equation. The importance of additives and pellet size has been discussed considering reactivity and strength of pellets. An analysis has been attempted when chemical reaction is important. The deformation of pellets was observed during hydration.

13. Monocyte activation in early onset rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a joint disease characterized by the inflammation of the joints, swelling, overgrowth of cartilage tissue, and pain. To see if a specific marker for early stages of RA can be identified, 44 RA patients and 16 normal controls were evaluated. In the RA patients, monocytes, a type of white blood cell from the peripheral circulation and synovial or joint fluids, produced greater amounts of certain factors involved in inflammation. These included prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), a biologically active fatty acid; interleukin-1-beta, a factor involved in activating processes leading to tissue damage; and leucotriene B4, an inflammatory factor. Peripheral monocytes from RA patients produced greater amounts of PGE2 than those from normal subjects when activated by lipopolysaccharides (lipid and carbohydrate compounds). The amounts of PGE2 released from peripheral monocytes were greater in RA patients than healthy subjects, regardless of disease stage or extent of joint abnormalities. The release of the enzymes superoxide and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase, which break down proteins, was similar in both normal subjects and patients. The release of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase from peripheral monocytes of RA patients was related to decreased duration of disease and was greater among patients with RA of less than one year duration. No relationship was found between type of treatment and amounts of PGE2, LTB4, IL-1-beta or N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase released by peripheral monocytes. The results suggest that in RA, monocytes produce large amounts of factors that may be involved in inflammatory processes leading to tissue damage. Abstract

In this paper, a simple computational model for isothermal phase change of phase change material (PCM) encapsulated in a single container is presented. The mathematical model was based on an enthalpy formulation with equations cast in such a form that the only unknown variable is the PCM's temperature. The theoretical model was verified with a test problem and an experiment performed in order to assess the validity of the assumptions of the mathematical model. With very good agreement between experimental and computational data, it can be concluded that conduction within the PCM in the direction of heat transfer fluid flow thermal resistance of the container's wall, and the effects of natural convection within the melt can be ignored for the conditions investigated in this study. The numerical analysis of the melting time for rectangular and cylindrical containers was then performed using the computational model presented in this paper. Results show that the rectangular container requires nearly half of the melting time as for the cylindrical container of the same volume and heat transfer area. [C] 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Abstract

We report the case of a middle-aged woman with Cotard's syndrome in whom clinical course was evaluated according to stages. Longitudinally this syndrome seems to have three stages, namely germination, blooming and chronic (depressive type/paranoid type) stages. In this patient, the chronic stage, primarily characterized by delusions, was observed without raising suspicion of affective disorder. She did not respond to any pharmacotherapies, but improved dramatically after ECT performed during the chronic stage. Although symptoms change according to the stage, most cases of Cotard's syndrome may belong to the affective spectrum and are probably best treated with ECT, as documented here. In evaluation of the mode of separation between emotion and cognition during follow-up it is important to consider stage and diagnosis.

Abstract

The ηη system produced in charge-exchange π-p interaction at a momentum of 32.5 GeV/c is studied in an experiment performed with the GAMS-4π spectrometer at the 70-GeV accelerator of the Institute for High-Energy Physics (IHEP, Protvino). A partial-wave analysis is performed in the mass range between 1.1 and 3.9 GeV for -t < 0.2 (GeV/c)2, S, D, G, and J waves being taken into account in this analysis. The S wave has a complicated structure, displaying peaks at about 1.5 and 1.7 GeV. These peaks are associated with the f0(1500) and f0(1710) mesons. One of the solutions (preferable one) involves the f0(2200) and f 2(1950) resonances. The mass region above 2.4 GeV is dominated by the G wave. A broad state of mass about 3 GeV and width 0.7 GeV is found in the J wave.
