Transit through the carbon liquid phase has significant consequences for the subsequent formation of solid nanocarbon detonation products. We report dynamic measurements of liquid carbon condensation and solidification into nano-onions over ∽200 ns by analysis of time-resolved, small-angle X-ray scattering data acquired during detonation of a hydrogen-free explosive, DNTF (3,4-bis(3-nitrofurazan-4-yl)furoxan). Further, thermochemical modeling predicts a direct liquid to solid graphite phase transition for DNTF products ~200 ns post-detonation. Solid detonation products were collected and characterized by high-resolution electron microscopy to confirm the abundance of carbon nano-onions with an average diameter of ∽10 nm, matching the dynamic measurements. We analyze other carbon-rich explosives by similar methods to systematically explore different regions of the carbon phase diagram traversed during detonation. Our results suggest a potential pathway to the efficient production of carbon nano-onions, while offering insight into the phase transformation kinetics of liquid carbon under extreme pressures and temperatures.

OBJECTIVES: This pilot study evaluates the effectiveness of a community based childhood injury prevention program on the reduction of home hazards. METHODS: High risk pregnant women, who were enrolled in a home visiting program that augments existing health and human services, received initial home safety assessments. Clients received education about injury prevention practices, in addition to receiving selected home safety supplies. Fourteen questions from the initial assessment tool were repeated upon discharge from the program. Matched analyses were conducted to evaluate differences from initial assessment to discharge. RESULTS: A significantly larger proportion of homes were assessed as safe at discharge, compared with the initial assessment, for the following hazards: children riding unbuckled in all auto travel, Massachusetts Poison Center sticker on the telephone, outlet plugs in all unused electrical outlets, safety latches on cabinets and drawers, and syrup of ipecac in the home. CONCLUSIONS: A community based childhood injury prevention program providing education and safety supplies to clients significantly reduced four home hazards for which safety supplies were provided. Education and promotion of the proper use of child restraint systems in automobiles significantly reduced a fifth hazard, children riding unbuckled in auto travel. Evolution of nitrogen under shock compression up to 100 GPa is revisited via molecular dynamics simulations using a machine-learned interatomic potential. The model is shown to be capable of recovering the structure, dynamics, speciation, and kinetics in hot compressed liquid nitrogen predicted by first-principles molecular dynamics, as well as the measured principal shock Hugoniot and double shock experimental data, albeit without shock cooling. Our results indicate that a purely molecular dissociation description of nitrogen chemistry under shock compression provides an incomplete picture and that short oligomers form in non-negligible quantities. This suggests that classical models representing the shock dissociation of nitrogen as a transition to an atomic fluid need to be revised to include reversible polymerization effects., (© 2023 Author(s). Semi-empirical quantum models such as Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTB) are attractive methods for obtaining quantum simulation data at longer time and length scales than possible with standard approaches. However, application of these models can require lengthy effort due to the lack of a systematic approach for their development. In this work, we discuss the use of the Chebyshev Interaction Model for Efficient Simulation (ChIMES) to create rapidly parameterized DFTB models, which exhibit strong transferability due to the inclusion of many-body interactions that might otherwise be inaccurate. We apply our modeling approach to silicon polymorphs and review previous work on titanium hydride. We also review the creation of a general purpose DFTB/ChIMES model for organic molecules and compounds that approaches hybrid functional and coupled cluster accuracy with two orders of magnitude fewer parameters than similar neural network approaches. In all cases, DFTB/ChIMES yields similar accuracy to the underlying quantum method with orders of magnitude improvement in computational cost. Our developments provide a way to create computationally efficient and highly accurate simulations over varying extreme thermodynamic conditions, where physical and chemical properties can be difficult to interrogate directly, and there is historically a significant reliance on theoretical approaches for interpretation and validation of experimental results.

A great need exists for computationally efficient quantum simulation approaches that can achieve an accuracy similar to high-level theories at a fraction of the computational cost. In this regard, we have leveraged a machine-learned interaction potential based on Chebyshev polynomials to improve density functional tight binding (DFTB) models for organic materials. The benefit of our approach is two-fold: (1) many-body interactions can be corrected for in a systematic and rapidly tunable process, and (2) high-level quantum accuracy for a broad range of compounds can be achieved with ∼0.3% of data required for one advanced deep learning potential. Our model exhibits both transferability and extensibility through comparison to quantum chemical results for organic clusters, solid carbon phases, and molecular crystal phase stability rankings. Our efforts thus allow for high-throughput physical and chemical predictions with up to coupled-cluster accuracy for systems that are computationally intractable with standard approaches.

There is significant interest in establishing a capability for tailored synthesis of next-generation carbon-based nanomaterials due to their broad range of applications and high degree of tunability. High pressure (e.g., shockwave-driven) synthesis holds promise as an effective discovery method, but experimental challenges preclude elucidating the processes governing nanocarbon production from carbon-rich precursors that could otherwise guide efforts through the prohibitively expansive design space. Here we report findings from large scale atomistically-resolved simulations of carbon condensation from C/O mixtures subjected to extreme pressures and temperatures, made possible by machine-learned reactive interatomic potentials. We find that liquid nanocarbon formation follows classical growth kinetics driven by Ostwald ripening (i.e., growth of large clusters at the expense of shrinking small ones) and obeys dynamical scaling in a process mediated by carbon chemistry in the surrounding reactive fluid. The results provide direct insight into carbon condensation in a representative system and pave the way for its exploration in higher complexity organic materials. Density functional tight binding (DFTB) is an attractive method for accelerated quantum simulations of condensed matter due to its enhanced computational efficiency over standard density functional theory (DFT) approaches. However, DFTB models can be challenging to determine for individual systems of interest, especially for metallic and interfacial systems where different bonding arrangements can lead to significant changes in electronic states. In this regard, we have created a rapid-screening approach for determining systematically improvable DFTB interaction potentials that can yield transferable models for a variety of conditions. Our method leverages a recent reactive molecular dynamics force field where many-body interactions are represented by linear combinations of Chebyshev polynomials. This allows for the efficient creation of multi-center representations with relative ease, requiring only a small investment in initial DFT calculations. We have focused our workflow on TiH 2 as a model system and show that a relatively small training set based on unit-cell-sized calculations yields a model accurate for both bulk and surface properties. Our approach is easy to implement and can yield reliable DFTB models over a broad range of thermodynamic conditions, where physical and chemical properties can be difficult to interrogate directly and there is historically a significant reliance on theoretical approaches for interpretation and validation of experimental results.

Objective: Improvement in epilepsy care requires standardized methods to assess disease severity. We report the results of implementing common data elements (CDEs) to document epilepsy history data in the electronic medical record (EMR) after 12 months of clinical use in outpatient encounters., Methods: Data regarding seizure frequency were collected during routine clinical encounters using a CDE-based form within our EMR. We extracted CDE data from the EMR and developed measurements for seizure severity and seizure improvement scores. Seizure burden and improvement was evaluated by patient demographic and encounter variables for in-person and telemedicine encounters., Results: We assessed a total of 1696 encounters in 1038 individuals with childhood epilepsies between September 6, 2019 and September 11, 2020 contributed by 32 distinct providers. Childhood absence epilepsy (n = 121), Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (n = 86), and Dravet syndrome (n = 42) were the most common epilepsy syndromes. Overall, 43% (737/1696) of individuals had at least monthly seizures, 17% (296/1696) had a least daily seizures, and 18% (311/1696) were seizure-free for >12 months. Quantification of absolute seizure burden and changes in seizure burden over time differed between epilepsy syndromes, including high and persistent seizure burden in patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Individuals seen via telemedicine or in-person encounters had comparable seizure frequencies. Individuals identifying as Hispanic/Latino, particularly from postal codes with lower median household incomes, were more likely to have ongoing seizures that worsened over time., Significance: Standardized documentation of clinical data in childhood epilepsies through CDE can be implemented in routine clinical care at scale and enables assessment of disease burden, including characterization of seizure burden over time. Our data provide insights into heterogeneous patterns of seizure control in common pediatric epilepsy syndromes and will inform future initiatives focusing on patient-centered outcomes in childhood epilepsies, including the impact of telemedicine and health care disparities., (© 2021 International League Against Epilepsy.)

Detonation nanodiamond (DND) is known to form aggregates that significantly reduce their unique nanoscale properties and require postprocessing to separate. How and when DND aggregates is an important question that has not been answered experimentally and could provide the foundation for approaches to limit aggregation. To answer this question, time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering was performed during the detonation of high-explosives that are expected to condense particulates in the diamond, graphite, and liquid regions of the carbon phase diagram. DND aggregation into low fractal dimension structures could be observed as early as 0.1 μs, along with a separate scattering population also observed from an explosive that produces primarily graphitic products. A counterexample is the case of a high-explosive that produces nano-onions, where no hierarchical scattering was observed for at least 10 μs behind the detonation front. These results suggest that DND aggregation occurs on time scales comparable to particle formation.

We describe a machine learning approach to rapidly tune density functional tight binding models for the description of detonation chemistry in organic molecular materials. Resulting models enable simulations on the several 10s of ps scales characteristic to these processes, with "quantum-accuracy." We use this approach to investigate early shock chemistry in 3,4-bis(3-nitrofurazan-4-yl)furoxan, a hydrogen-free energetic material known to form onion-like nanocarbon particulates following detonation. We find that the ensuing chemistry is significantly characterized by the formation of large C x N y O z species, which are likely precursors to the experimentally observed carbon condensates. Beyond utility as a means of investigating detonation chemistry, the present approach can be used to generate quantum-based reference data for the development of full machine-learned interatomic potentials capable of simulation on even greater time and length scales, i.e., for applications where characteristic time scales exceed the reach of methods including Kohn-Sham density functional theory, which are commonly used for reference data generation.

HN 3 is a unique liquid energetic material that exhibits ultrafast detonation chemistry and a transition to metallic states during detonation. We combine the Chebyshev interaction model for efficient simulation (ChIMES) many-body reactive force field and the extended-Lagrangian multiscale shock technique molecular dynamics method to calculate the detonation properties of HN 3 with the accuracy of Kohn-Sham density-functional theory. ChIMES is based on a Chebyshev polynomial expansion and can accurately reproduce density-functional theory molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) simulations for a wide range of unreactive and decomposition conditions of liquid HN 3 . We show that addition of random displacement configurations and the energies of gas-phase equilibrium products in the training set allows ChIMES to efficiently explore the complex potential energy surface. Schemes for selecting force field parameters and the inclusion of stress tensor and energy data in the training set are examined. Structural and dynamical properties and chemistry predictions for the resulting models are benchmarked against DFT-MD. We demonstrate that the inclusion of explicit four-body energy terms is necessary to capture the potential energy surface across a wide range of conditions. Our results generally retain the accuracy of DFT-MD while yielding a high degree of computational efficiency, allowing simulations to approach orders of magnitude larger time and spatial scales. The techniques and recipes for MD model creation we present allow for direct simulation of nanosecond shock compression experiments and calculation of the detonation properties of materials with the accuracy of Kohn-Sham density-functional theory.

Machine learned reactive force fields based on polynomial expansions have been shown to be highly effective for describing simulations involving reactive materials. Nevertheless, the highly flexible nature of these models can give rise to a large number of candidate parameters for complicated systems. In these cases, reliable parameterization requires a well-formed training set, which can be difficult to achieve through standard iterative fitting methods. Here, we present an active learning approach based on cluster analysis and inspired by Shannon information theory to enable semi-automated generation of informative training sets and robust machine learned force fields. The use of this tool is demonstrated for development of a model based on linear combinations of Chebyshev polynomials explicitly describing up to four-body interactions, for a chemically and structurally diverse system of C/O under extreme conditions. We show that this flexible training database management approach enables development of models exhibiting excellent agreement with Kohn-Sham density functional theory in terms of structure, dynamics, and speciation.

We describe the development of a reactive force field for C/O systems under extreme temperatures and pressures, based on the many-body Chebyshev Interaction Model for Efficient Simulation (ChIMES). The resulting model, which targets carbon condensation under thermodynamic conditions of 6500 K and 2.5 g cm -3 , affords a balance between model accuracy, complexity, and training set generation expense. We show that the model recovers much of the accuracy of density functional theory for the prediction of structure, dynamics, and chemistry when applied to dissociative condensed phase systems at 1:1 and 1:2 C:O ratios, as well as molten carbon. Our C/O modeling approach exhibits a 10 4 increase in efficiency for the same system size (i.e., 128 atoms) and a linear system size scalability over standard quantum molecular dynamics methods, allowing the simulation of significantly larger systems than previously possible. We find that the model captures the condensed-phase reaction-coupled formation of carbon clusters implied by recent experiments, and that this process is susceptible to strong finite size effects. Overall, we find the present ChIMES model to be well suited for studying chemical processes and cluster formation at pressures and temperatures typical of shock waves. We expect that the present C/O modeling paradigm can serve as a template for the development of a broader high pressure-high temperature force-field for condensed phase chemistry in organic materials.

Shock initiation and detonation of high explosives is considered to be controlled through hot spots, which are local regions of elevated temperature that accelerate chemical reactions. Using classical molecular dynamics, we predict the formation of nanoscale shear bands through plastic failure in shocked 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene high explosive crystal. By scale bridging with quantum-based molecular dynamics, we show that shear bands exhibit lower reaction barriers. While shear bands quickly cool, they remain chemically activated and support increased reaction rates without the local heating typically evoked by the hot spot paradigm. We describe this phenomenon as chemical activation through shear banding.

Carbon nanoallotropes are important nanomaterials with unusual properties and promising applications. High pressure synthesis has the potential to open new avenues for controlling and designing their physical and chemical characteristics for a broad range of uses but it remains little understood due to persistent conceptual and experimental challenges, in addition to fundamental physics and chemistry questions that are still unresolved after many decades. Here we demonstrate sub-nanosecond nanocarbon synthesis through the application of laser-induced shock-waves to a prototypical organic carbon-rich liquid precursor-liquid carbon monoxide. Overlapping large-scale molecular dynamics simulations capture the atomistic details of the nanoparticles' formation and evolution in a reactive environment and identify classical evaporation-condensation as the mechanism governing their growth on these time scales.

We demonstrate development of the Chebyshev Interaction Model for Efficient Simulation (ChIMES) for molecular systems through application to water under ambient conditions (298 K, 1 g/cm 3 ). These models, which are comprised of linear combinations of Chebyshev polynomials explicitly describing two- and three-body interactions, are largely fit by force matching to Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory (DFT). Protocols for selecting user-specified parameters and inclusion of stress tensor data are investigated, and structural and dynamical property prediction for resulting models is benchmarked against DFT. We show that the present ChIMES force fields yield excellent agreement with DFT without the need for additional terms such as those for Coulomb interactions. Overall, we show that tractable parametrization and subsequent accuracy of the present models make ChIMES an ideal candidate for extension of DFT dynamics to larger system sizes and longer time scales.

We detail the creation of a multicenter density functional tight binding (DFTB) model for hydrogen on δ-plutonium, using a framework of new Slater-Koster interaction parameters and a repulsive energy based on the Chebyshev Interaction Model for Efficient Simulation (ChIMES), where two- and three-center atomic interactions are represented by linear combinations of Chebyshev polynomials. We find that our DFTB/ChIMES model yields a total electron density of states for bulk δ-Pu that compares well to that from Density Functional Theory, as well as to a grid of energy calculations representing approximate H 2 dissociation paths on the δ-Pu (100) surface. We then perform molecular dynamics simulations and minimum energy pathway calculations to determine the energetics of surface dissociation and subsurface diffusion on the (100) and (111) surfaces. Our approach allows for the efficient creation of multicenter repulsive energies with a relatively small investment in initial DFT calculations. Our efforts are particularly pertinent to studies that rely on quantum calculations for interpretation and validation, such as experimental determination of chemical reactivity both on surfaces and in condensed phases.

We present a new force field and development scheme for atomistic simulations of materials under extreme conditions. These models, which explicitly include two- and three-body interactions, are generated by fitting linear combinations of Chebyshev polynomials through force matching to trajectories from Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT). We apply our method to liquid carbon near the diamond/graphite/liquid triple point and at higher densities and temperatures, where metallization and many-body effects may be substantial. We show that explicit inclusion of three-body interaction terms allows our model to yield improved descriptions of both dynamic and structural properties over previous empirical potential efforts, while exhibiting transferability to nearby state points. The simplicity of our functional form and subsequent efficiency of parameter determination allow for extension of DFT to experimental time and length scales while retaining most of its accuracy.

We present a method for the creation of classical force fields for water under dissociative thermodynamic conditions by force matching to molecular dynamics trajectories from Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT). We apply our method to liquid water under dissociative conditions, where molecular lifetimes are less than 1 ps, and superionic water, where hydrogen ions diffuse at liquid-like rates through an oxygen lattice. We find that, in general, our new models are capable of accurately reproducing the structural and dynamic properties computed from DFT, as well as the molecular concentrations and lifetimes. Overall, our force-matching approach presents a relatively simple way to create classical reactive force fields for a single thermodynamic state point that largely retains the accuracy of DFT while having the potential to access experimental time and length scales.

We show that force matching can be used to determine accurate empirical repulsive energies for the density functional tight binding method (DFTB) for chemical reactivity in condensed phases. Our approach yields improved results over previous parametrizations for molten liquid carbon and a phenolic polymer under combustion conditions. The method we present here allows for predictions of chemical properties over longer time periods than accessible via Kohn-Sham density functional theory while retaining its accuracy.

Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects almost 2.4 million US children. Because American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines for ADHD recommend use of standardized diagnostic instruments, regular follow-up and the chronic care model, this pilot project sought to implement and assess an electronic registry of patients with ADHD combined with care coordination by a planned care team., Methods: This quality improvement project was structured with 2 intervention and 2 control clinics to facilitate evaluation of the use of a planned care system for management of ADHD. Care teams included a pediatrician, nurse, medical assistant, and care coordinator and tracked patients using an electronic registry with data drawn from the EMR. Clinical work flows were pilot tested to facilitate use of the Vanderbilt scales and their incorporation into the EMR at intervention sites. Outcome measures included 2 recommended clinical follow-ups based on HEDIS measures as well as use of the Vanderbilt rating scales. Initiation phase measure was for follow-up after initiating medication, while the continuation phase measure was for subsequent follow-up during the first year of treatment. Measures were monitored during the project year and then also in the ensuing period of spread of the intervention to other sites., Results: Although the modified HEDIS initiation phase measure for patients newly on medication remained static at approximately 50% throughout the project period, the continuation phase measure showed improvement from 35% at baseline to 45% at the end of the project assessment year, a 29% increase. Follow-up for patients stable on medications also remained unchanged during the project period, but during subsequent spreading of the intervention to nonproject sites, follow-up of these patients improved to over 90%. In adjusted analyses, patients with ADHD at intervention sites were over 2 times more likely than patients at control sites to have had a Vanderbilt score documented in their records., Conclusions: The project achieved modest improvements in the diagnostic and treatment process for patients with ADHD. We report dispersion-corrected density functional theoretical calculations of the unreacted equation of state (EOS) of crystal 2,6-diamino-3, 5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105) under hydrostatic compression of up to 45 GPa. Convergence tests for k-points sampling in the Brillouin zone show that a 3 × 1 × 2 mesh is required to reproduce the X-ray crystal structure at ambient conditions, and we confirm our finding with a separate supercell calculation. Our high-pressure EOS yields a bulk modulus of 19.2 GPa, and indicates a tendency towards anisotropic compression along the b lattice vector due to molecular orientations within the lattice. We find that the electronic energy band gap decreases from a semiconductor type of 1.3 eV at 0 GPa to quasi-metallic type of 0.6 eV at 45 GPa. The extensive intermolecular hydrogen bonds involving the oxide (-NO) and dioxide (-NO2) interactions with the amine (-NH2) group showed enhanced interactions with increasing pressure that should be discernible in the mid IR spectral region. We do not find evidence for structural phase transitions or chemically induced transformations within the pressure range of our study. The gas phase heat of formation is calculated at the G4 level of theory to be 22.48 kcal/mol, while we obtain 25.92 kcal/mol using the ccCA-PS3 method. Density functional theory calculations of the crystal and the gas phases provided an estimate for the heat of sublimation of 32.4 kcal/mol. We thus determine the room-temperature solid heat of formation of LLM-105 to be -9.9 or -6.5 kcal/mol based on the G4 or ccCA-PS3 methods, respectively.

We report the adiabatic sound speeds for supercritical fluid carbon monoxide along two isotherms, from 0.17 to 2.13 GPa at 297 K and from 0.31 to 3.2 GPa at 600 K. The carbon monoxide was confined in a resistively heated diamond-anvil cell, and the sound speed measurements were conducted in situ using a recently reported variant of the photoacoustic light scattering effect. The measured sound speeds were then used to parametrize a single site dipolar exponential-6 intermolecular potential for carbon monoxide. PρT thermodynamic states, sound speeds, and shock Hugoniots were calculated using the newly parametrized intermolecular potential and compared to previously reported experimental results. Additionally, we generated an analytical equation of state for carbon monoxide by fitting to a grid of calculated PρT states over a range of 0.1-10 GPa and 150-2000 K. A 2% mean variation was found between computed high-pressure solid-phase densities and measured data-a surprising result for a spherical interaction potential. We further computed a rotationally dependent fluid to β-solid phase boundary; results signal the relative magnitude of short-range rotational disorder under conditions that span existing phase boundary measurements.

The purpose of the study is to assess the relationship between timing of adolescent development and risk factors for suicide. Nationally representative data from the Add Health survey were used. The relationship of sociodemographic characteristics, known risk factors, and physical developmental timing and cognitive developmental style to suicide attempt was assessed. Depression was a risk factor for suicide attempts in both 9th and 11th grade. Other risk factors differed. Use of illegal drugs, homosexual orientation, using public assistance, and physical development were the important risk factors for ninth graders. For 11th graders, sexual abuse, being in counseling, and being of "other" race or ethnicity (mainly Asian or Native American) were risk factors. The cognitive development variable of using a systematic problem-solving method was protective for 11th graders. Recognizing that risk factors for adolescent suicide attempts change over time and with developmental timing of puberty is an important factor for suicide prevention strategies.

The fastest self-sustained chemical reactions in nature occur during detonation of energetic materials where reactions are thought to occur on nanosecond or longer time scales in carbon-containing materials. Here we perform the first atomistic simulation of an azide energetic material, HN3, from the beginning to the end of the chemical evolution and find that the time scale for complete decomposition is a mere 10 ps, orders of magnitude shorter than that of secondary explosives and approaching the fundamental limiting time scale for chemistry; i.e., vibrational time scale. We study several consequences of the short time scale including a state of vibrational disequilibrium induced by the fast transformations.

With the aim to understand the relatively high solubility of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB), an important energetic material with a high degree of inter- and intra-molecular hydrogen bonding, in fluoride anion containing ionic liquids (ILs), first principles molecular dynamics simulations in the isobaric-isothermal ensemble were carried out for a system using hydrous tetramethylammonium fluoride as the prototypical solvent. Simulations initiated from both molecular TATB and its Meisenheimer complex (i.e., a σ-complex of the fluoride and the electrophilic ring of TATB) yield a Zundel-type complex where a proton is shared between an amino group and an F(-) ion, whereas the Meisenheimer complex is found to be only transiently stable. An analysis of the electronic structure probing the Wannier function centers supports the finding of a proton-sharing complex with a three-center four-electron like bond. The Zundel-type complex also yields an electronic absorption spectrum consistent with the experimentally observed color change. This study provides evidence that the remarkable solubility of otherwise hard-to-dissolve molecular crystals in ILs can be aided by chemical modification of the solute.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder has been linked to women's ill health, including headaches. Intimate partner violence, which may result in posttraumatic stress disorder, is often reported by women with headaches. Prior studies of intimate partner violence and headache have estimated lifetime but not 12-month prevalence. The researchers in this study examined the relationship between headache and posttraumatic stress disorder in a novel population, and estimated 12-month and lifetime prevalence rates of intimate partner violence., Methods: Patients were recruited from a women's headache center (n = 92) during 2006-07 and completed the Migraine Disability Assessment measure of headache severity. Posttraumatic stress disorder was measured using a modified Breslau scale. Twelve-month and lifetime physical intimate partner violence were measured with the Partner Violence Screen and the STaT ("slapped, threatened and throw") measure. Multivariable regression determined factors independently associated with headache severity., Results: Among all participants, 28.3% screened positive for posttraumatic stress disorder; 9.8% and 36.9% of women endorsed recent and lifetime intimate partner violence. Posttraumatic stress disorder was strongly associated with headache severity (β = 34.12, p = 0.01). Patients reporting lifetime intimate partner violence exhibited a trend of nine additional days of disability due to headache over 90 days., Conclusions: Posttraumatic stress disorder and intimate partner violence occur among a sizable proportion of women referred for headache. The authors' findings reaffirm that clinicians treating women with headaches must be aware of the possibility of posttraumatic stress disorder and intimate partner violence in such patients.

There are inconsistent findings about depression in Asians. This study examined risk factors for depression in Asian and Caucasian adolescents. Stratified bivariate secondary analyses of risk indicators and depressed mood were performed in this cross-sectional study of high school survey data (9th to 12th grades) from 2,542 students (198 Asian). Asians had a higher prevalence of depressed symptoms, but similar risk factors as Caucasians. Smoking and injury at work were major risk factors for depressed mood among Asians. Asian-specific risk factors for depression were being foreign-born and having a work-related injury. Asian and Caucasian teens have similar risk factors for depressed mood, though being foreign born and having a work-related injury are risk factors specific to Asian youth, possibly related to social-economic status. Providers of care in school, such as school nurses, can be important primary screeners of depression for Asian students in particular.

Alterations in mitochondrial structure and function are a hallmark of cancer cells compared to normal cells and thus targeting mitochondria has emerged as an novel approach to cancer therapy. The mitochondrial thioredoxin 2 (Trx2) system is critical for cell viability, but its role in cancer biology is not well understood. Recently some cationic triphenylmethanes such as brilliant green (BG) and gentian violet were shown to have antitumor and antiangiogenic activity with unknown mechanisms. Here we demonstrate that BG killed cells at nanomolar concentrations and targeted mitochondrial Trx2, which was oxidized and degraded. HeLa cells were more sensitive to BG than fibroblasts. In HeLa cells, Trx2 down-regulation by siRNA resulted in increased sensitivity to BG, whereas for fibroblasts, the same treatments had no effect. BG was observed to accumulate in mitochondria and cause a rapid and dramatic decrease in mitochondrial Trx2 protein. With a redox Western blot method, we found that treatment with BG caused oxidation of both Trx1 and Trx2, followed by release of cytochrome c and apoptosis-inducing factor from the mitochondria into the cytosol. Moreover, this treatment resulted in an elevation of the mRNA level of Lon protease, a protein quality control enzyme in the mitochondrial matrix, suggesting that the oxidized Trx2 may be degraded by Lon protease., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Delivery of prebiotic compounds to early Earth from an impacting comet is thought to be an unlikely mechanism for the origins of life because of unfavourable chemical conditions on the planet and the high heat from impact. In contrast, we find that impact-induced shock compression of cometary ices followed by expansion to ambient conditions can produce complexes that resemble the amino acid glycine. Our ab initio molecular dynamics simulations show that shock waves drive the synthesis of transient C-N bonded oligomers at extreme pressures and temperatures. On post impact quenching to lower pressures, the oligomers break apart to form a metastable glycine-containing complex. We show that impact from cometary ice could possibly yield amino acids by a synthetic route independent of the pre-existing atmospheric conditions and materials on the planet.

We have performed molecular-dynamics simulations of dynamic compression waves propagating through amorphous carbon using the Tersoff potential and find that a variety of dynamic compression features appear for two different initial densities. These features include steady elastic shocks, steady chemically reactive shocks, unsteady elastic waves, and unsteady chemically reactive waves. We show how these features can be distinguished by analyzing time-dependent propagation speeds, time-dependent sound speeds, and comparison to multiscale shock technique (MSST) simulations. Understanding such features is a key challenge in quasi-isentropic experiments involving phase transformations. In addition to direct simulations of dynamic compression, we employ the MSST and find agreement with the direct method for this system for the shocks observed. We show how the MSST can be extended to include explicit material viscosity and demonstrate on an amorphous Lennard-Jones system.

We present a straightforward method for the inclusion of quantum nuclear vibrational effects in molecular dynamics calculations of shock Hugoniot temperatures. Using a Gruneisen equation of state and a quasiharmonic approximation to the vibrational energies, we derive a simple, postprocessing method for calculation of the quantum corrected Hugoniot temperatures. We have used our novel technique on ab initio simulations of shock compressed water and methane. Our results indicate significantly closer agreement with all available experimental temperature data for these two systems. Our formalism can be easily applied to a number of different shock compressed molecular liquids or solids, and has the potential to decrease the large uncertainties inherent in many experimental Hugoniot temperature measurements of these systems.

Hemangiomas are the most common type of tumor in infants. As they are endothelial cell-derived neoplasias, their growth can be regulated by the autocrine-acting Tie2 ligand angiopoietin 2 (Ang2). Using an experimental model of human hemangiomas, in which polyoma middle T-transformed brain endothelial (bEnd) cells are grafted subcutaneously into nude mice, we compared hemangioma growth originating from bEnd cells derived from wild-type, Ang2+/-, and Ang2-/- mice. Surprisingly, Ang2-deficient bEnd cells formed endothelial tumors that grew rapidly and were devoid of the typical cavernous architecture of slow-growing Ang2-expressing hemangiomas, while Ang2+/- cells were greatly impaired in their in vivo growth. Gene array analysis identified a strong downregulation of NADPH oxidase 4 (Nox4) in Ang2+/- cells. Correspondingly, lentiviral silencing of Nox4 in an Ang2-sufficient bEnd cell line decreased Ang2 mRNA levels and greatly impaired hemangioma growth in vivo. Using a structure-based approach, we identified fulvenes as what we believe to be a novel class of Nox inhibitors. We therefore produced and began the initial characterization of fulvenes as potential Nox inhibitors, finding that fulvene-5 efficiently inhibited Nox activity in vitro and potently inhibited hemangioma growth in vivo. In conclusion, the present study establishes Nox4 as a critical regulator of hemangioma growth and identifies fulvenes as a potential class of candidate inhibitor to therapeutically interfere with Nox function.

The time scale and/or products of photoinduced decomposition of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) were investigated at ambient pressure and compared with products formed at 8 GPa. Ultrafast time-resolved infrared and steady-state Fourier transform IR (FTIR) spectroscopies were used to probe TATB and its products after photoexcitation with a 5 ns pulse of 532 nm light. At ambient pressure, transient spectra of TATB indicate that the molecule has significantly decomposed within 60 ns; transient spectra also indicate that formation of CO(2), an observed decomposition product, is complete within 30-40 mus. Proof of principle time-resolved experiments at elevated pressures were performed and are discussed briefly. Comparison of steady-state FTIR spectra obtained at ambient and elevated pressure (ca. 8 GPa) indicate that the decomposition products vary with pressure. We find evidence for water as a decomposition product only at elevated pressure.

Honokiol is a small-molecule polyphenol isolated from the genus Magnolia. It is accompanied by other related polyphenols, including magnolol, with which it shares certain biologic properties. Recently, honokiol has been found to have antiangiogenic, antiinflammatory, and antitumor properties in preclinical models, without appreciable toxicity. These findings have increased interest in bringing honokiol to the clinic as a novel chemotherapeutic agent. In addition, mechanistic studies have tried to find the mechanism(s) of action of honokiol, for two major reasons. First, knowledge of the mechanisms of action may assist development of novel synthetic analogues. Second, mechanistic actions of honokiol may lead to rational combinations with conventional chemotherapy or radiation for enhanced response to systemic cancers. In this review, we describe the findings that honokiol has two major mechanisms of action. First, it blocks signaling in tumors with defective p53 function and activated ras by directly blocking the activation of phospholipase D by activated ras. Second, honokiol induces cyclophilin D, thus potentiating the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, and causing death in cells with wild-type p53. Knowledge of the dual activities of honokiol can assist with the development of honokiol derivatives and the design of clinical trials that will maximize the potential benefit of honokiol in the patient setting.

We report the first quantum-based multiscale simulations to study the reactivity of shocked perfect crystals of the insensitive energetic material triaminotrinitrobenzene (TATB). Tracking chemical transformations of TATB experiencing overdriven shock speeds of 9 km/s for up to 0.43 ns and 10 km/s for up to 0.2 ns reveal high concentrations of nitrogen-rich heterocyclic clusters. Further reactivity of TATB toward the final decomposition products of fluid N(2) and solid carbon is inhibited due to the formation of these heterocycles. Our results thus suggest a new mechanism for carbon-rich explosive materials that precedes the slow diffusion-limited process of forming the bulk solid from carbon clusters and provide fundamental insight at the atomistic level into the long reaction zone of shocked TATB.

Water is known to exhibit fascinating physical properties at high pressure and temperature. Its remarkable structural and phase complexities suggest the possibility of exotic chemical reactivity under extreme conditions, although this remains largely unstudied. Detonations of high explosives containing oxygen and hydrogen produce water at thousands of kelvin and tens of gigapascals, similar to conditions in the interiors of giant planets. These systems thus provide a unique means of elucidating the chemistry of 'extreme water'. Here, we show that water has an unexpected role in catalysing complex explosive reactions--contrary to the current view that it is simply a stable detonation product. Using first-principles atomistic simulations of the detonation of the high explosive pentaerythritol tetranitrate, we discovered that H(2)O (source), H (reducer) and OH (oxidizer) act as a dynamic team that transports oxygen between reaction centres. Our finding suggests that water may catalyse reactions in other explosives and in planetary interiors.

We have used x-ray diffraction to determine the structure factor of water along its melting line to a static pressure of 57 GPa (570 kbar) and a temperature of more than 1500 K, conditions which correspond to the lower mantle of the Earth, and the interiors of Neptune and Uranus up to a depth of 7000 km. We have also performed corresponding first principles and classical molecular dynamics simulations. Above a pressure of 4 GPa the O-O structure factor is found to be very close to that of a simple soft sphere liquid, thus permitting us to determine the density of liquid water near the melting line. By comparing these results with the density of ice, also determined in this study, we find that the enthalpy of fusion (DeltaH(f)) increases enormously along the melting line, reaching approximately 120 kJ/mole at 40 GPa (compared to 6 kJ/mole at 0 GPa), thus revealing significant molecular dissociation of water upon melting. We speculate that an extended two-phase region could occur in planetary processes involving the adiabatic compression of water.

We report herein first principles simulations of water under shock loading and the chemical reactivity under these hot, compressed conditions. Using a recently developed simulation technique for shock compression, we observe that water achieves chemical equilibrium in less than 2 ps for all shock conditions studied. We make comparison to the experimental results for the Hugoniot pressure and density final states. Our simulations show that decomposition occurs through the reversible reaction H(2)O <--> H(+) + OH(-), in agreement with experiment. Near the approximate intersection of the Hugoniot and the Neptune isentrope, we observe high concentrations of charged species that contribute electronic states near the band gap.

The transferable potentials for phase equilibria (TraPPE) force field was extended to nitro and amino substituents for aromatic rings via parametrization to the vapor-liquid coexistence curves of nitrobenzene and aniline, respectively. These groups were then transferred to model 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB). Without any further parametrization to solid state data, the TraPPE force field is able to predict TATB's unit cell lengths and angles at 295 K with mean unsigned percentage errors of 0.3% and 1.8% and the specific density within 0.5%. These predictions are comparable in accuracy to the GRBF model [Gee et al., J. Chem. Phys. 120, 7059 (2004)] that was parametrized directly to TATB's solid state properties. Both force fields are able to reproduce the pressure dependence of TATB's unit cell volume, but they underestimate its thermal expansion. Due to its energetic nature and unusually large cohesive energy, TATB is not chemically stable at temperature in its liquid range. Gibbs ensemble simulations allow one to determine TATB's vapor-liquid coexistence curve at elevated temperatures and the predicted critical temperature and density for the TraPPE and GRBF model are 937+/-8 and 1034+/-8 K, and 0.52+/-0.02 and 0.50+/-0.02 gcm(3), respectively.

In order to assess the relationship between lifetime and during pregnancy experience of violence and low birth weight (LBW) and preterm birth outcomes, we designed a prospective cohort study in which the birth outcomes of women who experienced violence before their pregnancy or who experienced violence during pregnancy were compared to women who reported no lifetime experience of violence. We found that the risk of having a low birth weight or preterm baby was higher for women who did not experience violence. The proportion of women who had LBW babies was 7.1% for women who experienced violence during pregnancy, 7.8% for women who experienced violence before the current pregnancy, and 9.1% for nonexposed women. The proportion of preterm births was 3.5% for women exposed to violence during pregnancy, 8.5% for women exposed before the current pregnancy, and 9.7% for nonexposed women. However, married women who experienced violence had a higher proportion of LBW and preterm infants compared to the reference group of nonvictims of violence. Overall, women who experienced violence during pregnancy and before their current pregnancy did not have a greater proportion of LBW babies or preterm births. The findings suggest that married women in certain populations may experience more frequent or more severe experience of violence than unmarried women.

Materials with a high-degree of inter- and intra-molecular hydrogen bonding generally have limited solubility in conventional organic solvents. This presents a problem for the dissolution, manipulation and purification of these materials. Using a state-of-the-art density-functional-theory based quantum chemical solvation model we systematically evaluated solvents for a known hydrogen-bonded molecular crystal. This, coupled with direct solubility measurements, uncovered a class of ionic liquids involving fluoride anions that possess more than two orders of magnitude higher solvation power as compared with the best conventional solvents. The crystal structure of one such ionic liquid, determined by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, indicates that F- ions are stabilized through H-bonded chains with water. The presence of coordinating water in such ionic liquids seems to facilitate the dissolution process by keeping the chemical activity of the F- ions in check.

We report herein ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of graphite under shock compression in conjunction with the multiscale shock technique. Our simulations reveal that a novel short-lived layered diamond intermediate is formed within a few hundred of femtoseconds upon shock loading at a shock velocity of 12 kms (longitudinal stress>130 GPa), followed by formation of cubic diamond. The layered diamond state differs from the experimentally observed hexagonal diamond intermediate found at lower pressures and previous hydrostatic calculations in that a rapid buckling of the graphitic planes produces a mixture of hexagonal and cubic diamond (layered diamond). Direct calculation of the x-ray absorption spectra in our simulations reveals that the electronic structure of the final state closely resembles that of compressed cubic diamond.

We introduce a simple polar fluid model for the thermodynamics of dense supercritical water based on a Buckingham (exp-6) core and point dipole representation of the water molecule. The proposed exp6-polar thermodynamics, which is based on ideas originally applied to dipolar hard spheres, performs very well when tested against molecular dynamics simulations. Comparisons of the model predictions with experimental data available for supercritical water yield excellent agreement for the shock Hugoniot, isotherms, and sound speeds, and are also quite good for the self-diffusion constant and relative dielectric constant.

Recently, we demonstrated via large-scale molecular dynamics simulations a "coexistence period" in polymer melt ordering before crystallization, where nucleation and growth mechanisms coexist with a phase-separation mechanism [Gee et al., Nat. Mater. 5, 39 (2006)]. Here, we present an extension of this work, where we analyze the directional displacements as a measure of the mobility of monomers as they order during crystallization over more than 100 ns of simulation time. It is found that the polymer melt, after quenching, rapidly separates into many ordered hexagonal domains separated by amorphous regions, where surprisingly, the magnitude of the monomer's displacement in the ordered state, parallel to the domain axial direction, is similar to its magnitude in the melt. The monomer displacements in the domain's lateral direction are found to decrease during the time of the simulation. The ordered hexagonal domains do not align into uniform lamellar structures during the timescales of our simulations.

Objective: Patients with psychiatric conditions are known to experience poor and often disparate health outcomes. To investigate one potential mechanism for this phenomenon, we examined whether patients who screen positive for psychiatric comorbidity are lost to follow-up from primary care at higher rates than screen-negative controls., Method: Patients in a public hospital system were followed prospectively for an 18-month period after an initial routine behavioral health screening in neighborhood health centers. Screening data were linked to electronic medical record visit data, and loss to follow-up was ascertained using Cox proportional hazards modeling., Results: A public hospital health program screened 2686 patients from March 1998 to December 2000, and their visits were counted prospectively for 18 months. Nearly one third (N = 772, 29%) screened positive for a psychiatric condition. The screen-positive group had lower rates of censoring and a shorter time-to-event than the controls, indicating a higher continuing visit rate in primary care. This relationship persisted after adjustment for demographic variables, insurance type, substance abuse, and violence exposure., Conclusion: Patients who screen positive for psychiatric comorbidity are not lost to follow-up at higher rates than screen-negative controls. This finding suggests that disparate outcomes for mentally ill patients in a public hospital system may not be based on reduced access to or lack of contact with primary care providers. Further study of systems or provider-related factors is needed to ascertain the pathways toward poor health for this population.

We have calculated the coherent x-ray scattering intensity of several phases of water under high pressure using the ab initio density functional theory (DFT). Our calculations span the molecular liquid, ice VII, and superionic solid phases, including the recently predicted symmetrically hydrogen bonded region. We compute simulated spectra for ice VII and superionic water. We provide new atomic scattering form factors for water at extreme conditions, which take into account frequently neglected changes in ionic charge and electron delocalization. We show that our modified atomic form factors allow for a nearly exact comparison with the total x-ray scattering intensities calculated from DFT. Finally, we analyze the effect of their new form factors have on the determination of the oxygen-oxygen radial distribution function from experiment.
